This Sunday sees the Finals of the Men’s Premier Interclub Competition, the Woodward Cup, hosted at Avondale Golf Club.

Christchurch claimed the round robin win, and is set to play 4th place Clearwater in the first semifinal. The other semifinal match is between Templeton and Russley, who claimed the 2nd and 3rd ranks.

Christchurch and Templeton have dominated over the past few years, but 2024 looks the closest competition with an ‘all on the day’ feeling about the match ups.

Long time Canterbury Selector and Manager and Woodward Cup team manager Kerry Chuck spoke with Lesley about which club he thinks will come through, with thanks to the Elmwood Trading Company.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, this Sunday is the final of the men's premier
golf inter club competition, the wood Would Cup, and the
venue is Avondale Golf Club. So let's go to the
best of the best. Longtime Canterbury selector and manager Woodward
Cup team manager Carrie Chuck and he joined us.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Good morning, How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Oh, very good? So you'll be very excited, Yes i am.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
I'm very excited for a number of reasons. I think
nearly four teams that have made the finals are deserve
to be there. There's a number of representative players playing,
five of the six Canterbury senior players three masses, and
there's some tagment representatives as well. So looking forward to
a big day indeed.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
So which clubs are there?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
So we've got Templeton, Rossy and clear Water right okay,
so we've got krash Church playing Clearworder in one semi
final and Temperon and Rossi in the other.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Avondale golf course. How is it looking these days?

Speaker 2 (00:58):
And always well presented. You know, from a players perspective,
they know it's shorter than a lot of courses, it's
a lot tighter. The greens will be very fast. I
expect so it's going to come down to a lot
of good course management, accuracy and all these guys are
very very good players, good ball strikers, and I expect

(01:21):
it to come down to who chips and puts the
best on the day.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
So the shorter course, the players, as you mentioned, just
going to have to adjust their game.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
A little bit, a bit of risk rewardinately some You know,
if you're a very accurate driver, you might try and
take advantage of the shorter holes for the there's not
many shorter as these days in the game at that level.
But if if you're a little more accurate, you might
be laying up to a distance that suits your approach shops.
So it'll be interesting to see how each player adjusts

(01:53):
to the course.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
So who are you picking which individuals are going to
stand out? I mean, that's a bit of a hard
question to be fair, but you know there are plenty
of golfers in Canary who have got really good form
at the moment.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, for sure. You know, there's what I call the
X fact that there's a lot of players with that
looking forward to seeing if young Cooper can carry on
whose tremendous form at the moment. It was so good
to see him win the New Zealand Amateur last weekend,
Sam McGill winning the Canary Match Play the weekend before,

(02:24):
and you know, we've just got we've just got talent
across the board. It's a very very difficult to pick
who's going to win this weekend.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
And the rivalry, clearly there is heaps between all the clubs.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
I think the rivalries might be a little bit of
a myth if you ask me. The clubs have got
their very proud traditions. Crish Urch and Russey have dominated
Canobary golf for a long long time and good ones
come on, they won the competition a couple of years

(03:00):
in a row. So it's a it's a respect between
each club these days and those those guys they love
beating each other and it's just fun to watch.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
Well, no surprise is about respect, because I mean that's
one thing that golf, you know, the high standards that
golf has, especially when you're on course.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
For sure, and like I said, if you've played sport
for a lot, you know the one thing you don't
want to do is move to your mate, and that's
very evident when these guys get together on the course.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
So who do you think is going to take it?
Who is going to be the twenty twenty four Woodward
Cup Champion.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Okay, well, I've been through all the results and through
the round robin matches, and I don't think we can
put too much stared on what's what those results are.
It's how the players are performing right now at the
top of the order. It's going to be very close,
and there could be some tactics that come into play
as to team orders, and you know, they might they

(03:59):
might players around where they think they'll have a better
opportunity for for a win. But at the end of
the day, I'm picking chrish Huts and Temperate to go
through to the final, and I expect, well I'm picking
krish Urts to top Temperate in a very very close contest.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
So it's tough when you put your neck on the line,
isn't it.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
I know, Yeah, yeah, my credibility. I'm going to get
a lot of a lot of trouble from other players.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Yeah I know. Well, well, hopefully they're warming up and
they're not listening.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
So yeah, that's true.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
So let's just talk before we finish about Avon Dala's
the venue because their Blank Cup team should be playing
a promotion relegation match.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
So the team that finishes last and Woodward Cup they
will play the winner of the Blank Cup competition and
whoever woulden's their promotion relegation game. Either y Myra, who
unfortunately last and the Woodward Cup will stay or if
if am O wins the Blank Cup and beats Why
Murray in the promotion relegation, then they will get reinstated

(05:03):
into the Woodwood Cup for next year. The club's like
Bottle Lake are coming on. Whedon's accounted for themselves very
well this year at Woodward Cup. So you know, the
country teams or the lesser teams, I don't like to
say that lightly, but they are proven to be a
great chance for the better known teams. So the Woodward
Cup competition is becoming stronger and stronger every year.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Well that's what you want, that is absolutely what you want. Well, Kerry,
you have done the good business. You have put your
neck on the line. You've given us a winner and
all we can do is wait for it to play
out now and see actually who does on the day.
And we are talking about the Woodward Cup. It is
the final men's premiere inter club and we've been chatting
with Kerry Chuck who knows everything about the club game.

(05:49):
Thank you very much and enjoy the watch.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Thank you very much. Due take care the best wishes
the Canary teams as they head into the Interprovincials. The
Masses is the first team her head down to the
cargo next week straight after the finals this weekend, watching
them all the best. And then of course we have
the Seniors Men's and Senior Ladies in christ Use the

(06:12):
first week of December and hopefully we can get a
lot of support out of the Herewood and Russell golf
clubs to watch that competition.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Yeah, we're looking forward to that. The inter Provincials absolutely
are well. Carry go well in your packs and just
enjoy the watch.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Thank you very much.
