Speaker 1 (00:04):
Us Tox. He'd be it's seventeen minutes past seven. All
right to the Premier Hockey League. We have loved following
this and the quality of hockey that's come from it.
It is the first year, so let's go to one
of New Zealand's best and I would say he's absolutely
(00:24):
world class striker can of his own, Sam Lane.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Good morning, Good morning, Leslie.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
How are you going? Oh? Good? More importantly, how are
you How are you enjoying this new Premier Hockey League
with the four teams?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah? I mean it's been a really exciting product. It's
been something that the players within the high performance setup
have been asking for for a long time. It's been great,
think some great hockey and you can see the development
of some players coming through really shine. I've really enjoyed it.
It's been really cool to play with the target boys
and the cannery guys all together and I think we're
paying some really exciting hockey.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Oh you certainly are. Because the Alpiners, which is the
only South Island two out of the four men's teams
have already qualified. You've got a match on Sunday here
in christ Church, but you were already through to the final,
which is going to be up at North Harbor the
following weekend. What would you normally be doing at this
time of the year. Would you be back in New
Zealand or would you be playing hockey in Europe.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
This time last year. I mean it's quite different. I'm
currently working full time, but in previous years, yeah, finishing
off the European season and then you start to get
into some Black Specks trainings and there's usually been a
tour in January or February that has been an important
part of our program. Sometimes when that happens, you do
start to narrow and on eighteen to twenty guys, whereas
(01:39):
having the Premier Hockey League has been really great to
being able to focus on eighty two one hundred players
and having an important competition.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
You just mentioned you're working full time. Is that a
career choice or is it just where you're at with
your hockey at the moment that you need to.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Do this or yeah, it's an interesting one. I chose
to after the Olympics to stay to set into some
full time work. Whether that's going to be my long
term goal, I'm not sure, but yeah, I'm loving being
here at full sized Bar. I decided that with hockey,
you know, there's going to be a retirement date and
I want to make sure that, you know, my thirties,
(02:14):
that I'm not starting from scratch. So there was an
active choice to do that. And I know, yeah, I've
got this Premier Hockey League which has been great, and
also the India League in January and February, so there's
a lot There's still a lot of hockey that I
can access now, and the hockey calendar is constantly changing. Yeah,
I actively chose this decision for now, and you know,
(02:35):
I'm loving it.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Because you're still only twenty seven, aren't you.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yes, twenty seven, yep, yep. So sometimes I think that's
old and some days I think it's a bit young.
So it's not old, No, no, it's not. But when
you are overseas sometimes you do really appreciate your time
in New Zealand and that's what I'm actually really enjoying
at the moment, and also trying my craft and something
(03:01):
new and it's been really good for me. But of course,
you know, hockey is still a major priority in my life.
And being able to constantly train and be available for
New Zealand and the Alpiners and then also my Indian
League team is Yeah, there's a lot of hockey in
the calendar as it is, so I don't feel like
I'm going to be too short on that for now.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
No, I no, totally agree. And you have an ingredient
in your hockey skilled toolbox that most people in New
Zealand don't have, and that's the ability to score goals.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah. No, it was a good weekend. Yes, scored four
on the on the Saturn and in for another four
on the Sunday. So if you look at our team,
we attacked from so many different ways and so for me,
I've just got to finish it off and that is
probably my strength. Gosh, if I could do some of
the things that our midfielders and our defenders do and
some of other strikers to set someone like myself up,
(03:54):
you know, I'd love to take what they's got as well.
So I'm just a little pieces of the Big Alpine's part.
It's been really fun to be playing like how we
are that.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Has incredibly models. I mean that's eight goals on a weekend.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah yeah, I mean I probably wasn't accepting that. Don't
really have too much to say on it, but yeah,
as a striker, it is your job. There's number one,
and so to be able to do your job pretty
well is always exciting. But there's been It's a I've
ritually really enjoyed other parts of my game that I've
been focusing on during the matches and the goals, yeah,
(04:29):
they've been coming at the right time.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Well long may that continue. But how have the Alpine
as men been able to gel so quickly and easily?
And is it because you've got more black sticks players
than other franchise teams or what.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, I think there's multiple elements to it, and I think, yeah,
that's probably one of them. And I know people will
preferably other teams that get a little bit antsy about that.
But if we did this Premier league when I first
joined the team the Black sixteen and twenty sixteen, you
wouldn't be saying that the Alpine with the top of
the league then. But it's a real credit to Tago
and Canterbury. Within the last three years we've been winning
(05:07):
the NHC and we've had a lot of young talent
comes through. Obviously talents there and there's a lot in
our younger and our younger players coming through now, which
is which is really exciting. And then yeah, you got
some experience players up top, but like I'm living in
Auckland at the moment and we now to come down
and no, I've got to spend the weekend with these
guys That are really excites me. We've just got twenty
(05:29):
really good guys who just want to get on and
just play really good hockey together. And there's a lot
of logistics going on in the first year, which are
a little bit problematic for every team, but I feel
like our team has just just gets on the lids
the job and we've got a performance to do and
we're all fighting for our spots to pay the next week.
So it's a really awesome culture and you feel like
(05:51):
we're just all really good mates and just want to
do well for each other.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Well, that comes through loud and clear. And the performances,
that's for sure, and their enjoyment and the fun which
is a really important part, isn't it when you get
to high performance sport.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah it is, It genuinely is. But we know we
do have to perform and people we've got a bit
of a target on our back with some of the
talent with God and some of the attitude that Dave
Ross and Aaron Ford put through us in the pre
match meetings and what we're trying to do. We're actually
just focusing on ourselves and just trying to be the
(06:24):
best we can be. And it's pretty clear we're just
trying to. We're trying to. We don't know where our
feeling is at, so we're just constantly trying to figure out,
you know, how good can we actually be? And when
you're just focusing on yourself, some special things can happen
and it's really fun to be a part of.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Oh yeah, and I guess the challenge then, once you
understand it or reach that is to then transfer that
into the Black Sticks environment right at international level.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah, and you know that does come and it is
a different it is a different environment, and that's what
we're trying to instill within this Premier Hockey League is
especially we've only got control in the Alpina's environment, but
we want to see these young guys become black Sticks
and become really good ones. There's been a few guys
(07:10):
on the fringe for a couple of years, and you know,
if they can take one or two things from what
we're experiencing in this league that can make them better players.
And I'd say they're having a pretty successful time and
what we're trying to create within our franchise is really positive.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
In order for our listeners to understand, the games are
at Napunauai on Sunday and the Old Piners women are
basically playing for a position to challenge that finals position,
so they've got a tough match. You guys are already through.
You are finals bound, Sam Lane. It's been an absolute
treat to check to you, and it's been wonderful actually
(07:49):
watching your career evolve over the years and long may
that continue. As I mentioned earlier.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
On Amazing No, I think very much, Lezie and yeah,
we just we want to see as many people on
Sunday supporting us. Then yes, Spishy the Woman to make
sure they get to the final as well.
