Speaker 1 (00:00):
A healthy serving of sports Canterbury's All Sports Breakfast with
Leslie Murdock and Mina tim Mega, supporting local Froendly q
we owned and operated News Talks MB.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
The News Talks EB. It's twenty four away from nine
o'clock and it is a warm welcome to Jason Murray,
who is the vice captain at the Emberly Golf Club.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Good morning Jason, Good morning legally, thanks for having me on.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Well, i'll tell you what. You've got a massive tournament today,
haven't you. One of the biggest ones of the summer.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Yes, yet, know, we draw a large crowd to this
tournament's always well received and we are always are looking
at the weather to make sure that Ryan turns up.
But we've turned it on today, so that's great.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
What is it like outed Embly because it's always a
little bit of a microclimate compared to christ juts I reckon.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Indeed, yeah, no, say, at the moment we're actually blue
skyes at here and I think any forecast of rain
is not supposed to happen to late this evening. So yeah,
it's great that a very very different climate than carst Ships.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Indeed, yes, well thanks for that weather update. That is
very good and nice to hear that you've got those
blue skies. So over one hundred and forty members and
guests will be starting out there today. So what's involved
in the setup So.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Set upstart is probably about September October last year, just
getting together with a couple of individuals and namely just
sort of you know, highlighting the regular sponsors, businesses, et
cetera that like to support this tournament because we do
rely hugely on these local businesses and for donating prizes,

(01:42):
and that the more that they can put together for us,
the less that the club has to sort of spend
them and you know, put towards the tournaments. It's good
profit for the club.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Who winters, Where do they come from, how.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
They come from? Far White, I believe we've got some
people from Hoka Ticker here today. We've got some from Blenham,
Central Otago. And then we have the regulars. We have
a group a large group from Herewood Golf Club, the
Hereward Hackers and they play against their ambly ambassadors. And
then we also have a significant group that comes over
from Rangura Golf Club to play another trophy event against

(02:16):
a group of our Ambly members as well.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
So what's for what is the program? When does it finish?

Speaker 3 (02:22):
So it started at eight o'clock this morning and we're
teeing off every six minutes and through to about twelve
thirty today. And it's a stableford tournament, so everyone gets
a handicap and you gain points for your score on
each hole. Today's tournament is a best Stableford competition, so
the winners of the best Stableford for men and women.

(02:43):
When the Ken and Heyman Trophy, So Kevin Heyman was
a gentleman that pretty much started this competition back in
the early nineties and it was initially run to sort
of help fund the early stages of the irrigation to
the course. And unfortunately Kevin died a couple of years
later and tragedy tragically in Australia. So the Kevin Hyman

(03:05):
Trophy has been donated by a family and played for
ever since.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Fantastic, So obviously very popular with people out just slightly
out of the Amberly geographical area. But in terms of
who have won us in the past, I mean, who's
some big names.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
Oh see, it's very you know, this is such a
hidden gem of a course. You know, we haven't really
had too many big named people here to be there.
You know, it's nice that we see the locals, the
regulars that come to hold up the trophy once or twice,
and then you have people that had obviously they've come
here for many years, that has been going for thirty
five years and may not have lifted the trophy at all.

(03:44):
So no, it is, like I say, always well received
and never short of trying to get people to eat it.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Now, that's brilliant. Any holes in one during.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
This time, off the top of my head. Nothing last
couple of years. No, hopefully we've got one today. We
have got sponsorship for a hole in one, and various
other businesses come to the party. We have other re
events after pickers rounds of golf like a pudding competition,
and then throughout the around the golf has closest to
the tyms, game, ball holes, barbecue and whatnot, so all

(04:15):
in the name of good fun.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Oh you're fantastic. Do you play yourself, Jason?

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I do?

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yes? What do you playoff?

Speaker 3 (04:21):
I'm on eighth at the moment so that I can
hid a ball a right, Yes. Luckily I'm the father
of a young boy of twelve years old, who's also
evidly keen, and so it gets to I get to
play down here a little bit more than I normally would.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Oh, that's fantastic. What's his name, Hudson Murray? All right,
well there we go. Was a couple of names to
watch out for. Jason Murray had.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Some Murray Yes, no, he's coming along as well. And
this Yeah, absolutely loves the game. So it's great to
be able to spend time together on the course and
again game of golf four ages. It's brilliant.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Yeah, no, you did write about that. And I think
the influx of people playing golf, and we've talked about
it quite a lot, specially post COVID has been phenomenal,
hasn't it.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Yeah, totally. Yeah. I think like in most sports, you know,
the membership fluctuates, but what we're seeing now is a
lot of people that are maybe not able to join
a club full time. So we call these people green
fears and they just come along. They play early Sunday morning,
Saturday mornings. You know, they've had a hard week at
work and you know, golfer can be a great stress leef.

(05:24):
It can actually be very stressful if you're not hitting
it too well, but you know the number of people
getting out and about and playing the game. Yeah, it
is actually really incredible. And like you say, since COVID,
we've seen massive numbers coming out this especially to our
course here. Yeah, to enjoy the great surroundings and our facility.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Okay, that's fantastic. So are you actually in today's event.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
No, I'm sort of just sort of director of tournament.
They all seeding go well, had a fleepless night last
night making sure that the things have been tacked off
in my head that were to organize them and make
sure that today is a success.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Has hadson playing? Is is there an intrig for him?

Speaker 3 (06:07):
He would have went to the New Zealand Breakers battle
game last night. So we were late home, and late
nights and early starts don't really make for good golf,
especially when golf's are probably ninety percent mental and ten
percent about your golf swing. Clyde, kids, some might play

(06:27):
good golf that we're just parked up. He's actually going
to be here soon helping me out doing some different
jobs around.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Of course he'll learn a lot that way anyway, that's
for sure. Well, that's brilliant We hope you have a
fantastic day. It sounds like you've got everything sussed out
there at the Mberley Golf Club. Jason Murray and thanks
so much for joining us.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Leslie, Thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Love your work.
