Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to talk golf and we welcome back to our
EU Wave's good friend of the show, Blair Minton. Pleare
good morning morning, are you oh very good? Thanks? Well,
there'll be a few excited golfers this weekend, weren't there.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Yes. Absolutely. We've got our May twenty five clam and
Hayward Kennery stroke playing, which is our premiere stroke playing
at the end of the year, so really excited for
that one.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
So what's it looking like and tell our listeners what
the structure of the weekend is.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yep, so it's looking good. We've played at the Templton
Golf Clubs this year and it rotates round sprint clubs
each year. We've got a full field in with one
hundred and eight players taking part, so it's a city
four our whole event, so three rounds, two rounds played
on a Saturday morning and afternoon and then reseeded for
the final round on the Sunday morning at Templeton. So
(00:48):
we've got Open men's, Open women's divisions. But with then
that we also recognize their best performing Masters men's and
Masters Women's players as well as an under nineteen always
as well. Plenty to play for. There's a there's a
way but each run the line. This year as well,
we've got it's also doubled as a Seth Island stroke
play event. It's got World Amateur Golf Ranking points associated
(01:14):
with it as well for those players that are in
that space. And it's also a last chance qualify for
New Zealand Open Final qualifying event at Cromwell, So there's
there's three spots up for grabsive players a dead as well,
so plenty of play for.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
So presumably those who are gunning for the top awards,
they are wanting to get that qualification.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yes, and in some cases they've already got that qualification
spot wid the performances performances at other strip play events
or qualifying events, so yeah, some of those top ones
are event which gives actually some of the other players
in the field a lot to play for as well
because they just finish a little bit lower than the
table teaching paid by spots up as well. So yeah,
brilliant temper.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Who do you remember who've won that last year?
Speaker 2 (01:59):
The main means of women's Yes, so Robbie Turnbull from
Auckland won the title last year and believes close so
from autand also won the WARN's event last year as well,
but actually both of those players aren't returning, so there's
an opportunity for a new player who wrote their name
on the trophy or plaid. That's a really wondered in
the past as well. So yeah, it's wide open.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Who are you putting your money and who are you
going to stick your neck out on the line and
promote a couple of winners.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
I've loved it. Promote gives him back as some of
our local players in the men's field, the lots of
Crooper Moore has got a user chance there in some
pretty hot form, coming off a couple of top tens
in Australian amateur events and runner up in Otago last weekend,
so he's always a hot prospect. He hasn't won the
Stroke Player yet, he's won a lot of other things,
(02:49):
so it'd be nice to get his name on there.
Another player, another Canbury player, with Sam McGill as a
big hope as well. He spoke to him recently last
year and here not the strong year he was having.
He's continued it on and he's one of a few
club open events in the last couple of weeks, so
he'll be gunning for any to a former Teamlton player
as well, so he'll he'll know that course very well.
(03:12):
And then beyond that, it's a few other names there,
the Dukie, Moore, Yuki My sorry and Tom Tom Lee. Yeah,
we're looking on the toll there. There's a few out
of towns there, diferent teams as well, but I think
that's the local copes.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Well, there's a lot to play for, as you say,
and I guess you know we talked about the veterans
because you have a lot of age great players in
that particular age group, don't you, the likes of John Radermakers.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Yep. Yeah, it's a pretty strong master's field. Again, I'm
not sure if Dutchy's put his name for it there,
but there's a defending champ being called for. He's after
the chests and region. He's coming back down. He threw
one in twenty twenty two, so he's a big name there.
Got the likes of there In Forsyth and David Rectory
and the defending champion actually was was kier and Sharp
(03:59):
and who headstelli Ye last year, won by at six
shots from his fellow Master's players and finished ninth overall,
so you know he'll be looking to come back, and
they have a trong with going as well. And yeah,
these masters players, well for they're competing for their own titles.
Given the formattles of the ink, they can they can
place anywhere, intervents and they recommands word as well. So yeah,
the old boys all know their way around the course well.
(04:21):
And I'm sure we'll be pushing these young.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Guys now in terms of other happenings and canby Golf
House it looking at the moment, I mean, it just
seems to be operating like you know, oil, just so smoothly.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yes, it's a pretty exciting space at the moment. Obviously
we're in a period now where it's kind of a
lot of the one off events, a lot of the
clubs are running there their major opens, means and women's,
so it's pretty exciting in the moment for those players
that are participating. And that's and obviously it's a big
peak time for golf and funeral for all the eastra
day light hours and people wanted to get out and play,
So yeah, there's treny of opportunities. Obviously, doing our best
(04:57):
to promote all those opportunities. And the club's doing job
as well, so yeah, hopefully.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah, that's one of the things that real pleasures that
we have on the Your Sport Breakfast is getting out
to the clubs and talking to various people who do
all the volunteer work. It's just simply amazing, isn't it
what they do do. Hey, I've just had another little
squisite the weather forecast for that weekend for your candibly
Stroke Play Championships. It looks pretty good for Saturday. Maybe
(05:23):
the odd shower, maybe that won't happen, but they are
predicting the odd chants but maybe not much on the Sunday.
We just wish all the golfers all the best.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah, I think it's crossed it. It's going to improve
forecast from a few days ago, so you know, we'll
take that. Hopefully the two rounds on Saturday completely keep
very and dry and then get business need on Sunday.
I'm sure we're going a few shares when it stop
these players from producing the best and lying for the titles.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
