Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's all about sports, Canterbury's of All Sport Breakfast.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
With Leslie Murdock and might have ten mega supporting local
friendly key we owned and Operator News Talks.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
EDB, News talks'd B. It is ten minutes past eight
and a frantic interview we had before the Crusaders fly
back to christ Church in fact, so I bring you
the interview with Crusader's assistant coach Dan Perrin as they
(00:32):
prepare to get to Hamilton Airport. Dan Peren, I guess
there'll be a few Crusader fans asking a few questions
about that second half, but forty eight minutes into the game,
you were still in it.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Here, we're asking a few questions ourselves. So, yeah, we
come out out of the block after halftime in a
good ten minute period, and yeah, those trials at the
fifty and fifty third minute it took one out of
our sales and it was pretty disappointing from there on in.
So a couple of crucial moments potentially that lead to that.
(01:09):
But yeah, we weren't good enough the back end of
that second half there for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, I guess that's what people want to see as
a fight back. I mean you did score a late try,
but how do you coach for those moments to keep
a team in it? I mean, clearly the Chiefs were
at a different level at that stage. They had the
momentum and the passes were sticking lots of crudous to them.
But how do you coach that resilience?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, you're right. I think it's around understanding pretor cycles
and trying to win back moments and having plans for those.
And we spoke about it during the week with our leaders.
You know, whether you're on via running red hot like
the Chiefs were, or you're on the back end of
it and just okay, you sort of go about wrestling
that momentum back in a couple of plays you could use,
but simple soft skill set errors and soft penalties just
(02:00):
them to roll on top of us. And once they
got going, they were pretty impressive and we just couldn't
hold that momentum. So we'll be having a good hard
look at there in our review, and yeah, there will
definitely be some questions being asked this morning and Monday morning.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Oh absolutely, Now, tell us talk to us a little
bit about that situation with Fletcher Newell, because we know
clearly that there was a yellow card around the injury
that he got, but then he was pulled and it
did seem to affect hugely your forward pack.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah, I guess you know, it was pretty tough on
Fletch just before halftime clear shouldered the head. What we
heard through the referees Mike was was mitigating factors because
he was another tackler involved in the tackle. But yeah,
I currently commentate too much on the referee decision and
the yellow potentially been upgraded to a red. But we
(02:51):
were gutted from Flecky. He went sixty minutes for US
against the Hurricanes, and that was the plan again this week.
And you just tested a little bit of depth with
a couple of front row injuries at the moment as well.
And yeah, a couple of young front rowers that got
out there just didn't quite nail their nail their job.
So frustrated to re flect you, but yeah, tip it out
(03:13):
of that control that one.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yeah, absolutely, Look, you know tough too because you're playing
what clearly is the form team of the competition and
you've seen the young rookies in and jeez, there's only
one way to learn.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Yeah, that's learning on the job right. But those guys
are better than that, and they showed in a couple
of scrums they did get it right. So yeah, a
little bit frustrating for those boys, but we'll get around
them and make sure they get better for it.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
So yeah, So when you do your review, is it
this thumping staff or is it you know, how do
you go about addressing some of the frailties that we
saw in that match.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah. I think for the most part, we hung tough
into the very strong breeze and that first half and
we were pretty confident at halftime. We still weren't playing
our best footy. You know, they got a couple of
soft tries again with a quick tap and not keeping
our eyes on the ball with Nadawa, and we felt
as if we just hadn't had enough ball in the
(04:12):
right areas of the field. We scored some nice tries
in that first half and turning around with a little
bit of breeze and the second word, we came out
of the blox, you know, that first ten minutes was
that's exactly what we wanted to carry on. So there's
a couple of moments and a couple of those pressure
cycles and just how we hope that momentum I think
will be be a big one and regaining that momentum back,
(04:35):
so there'll be some some good discussions. There was no
fist pumping or shouting and reviews anymore. It's a cleverat
of approach and you will make sure we get around
the boys and get some good game understanding learning from
that as it should.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Be like that. Yeah, some positives again, the growth of
Antonio Shelfoon. You wanna Monanu.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, yeah, Stoke for Stoke for those boys are playing
really well. Antonio has got a huge engine and Johannis
who's core skills of thrown and scrummaging anything very impressive.
I think the lineout operated at about ninety percent last night.
And Antonio with his lineout defense skill set, I think
we've got three or four not straights off them just
(05:17):
from Antonio's good work and line out defense and he
has worked around the field is immense too. So spoke
for those two boys.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Damn hearing anything else that you can take from a positive.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, there's a couple of little parts in our shape
that James Marshall's been installing with us that look good
when we get it right. But we're just not consistent
enough with some of that yet, so it's a favorite
to work on their still, and a lot of it
comes down to that game management and playing the rods
of the field and control and position in territory and
(05:53):
thinks and just.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Quickly the bye week so you've got plenty of time
to reflect.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
It's going to be a tough teen days and that
so you don't even want to go into a bi
week after that corner performance. But we'll liver bit between
our teeth sets for sure, and we're aim to be
better when we come back to face around.
