Speaker 1 (00:00):
All about Sports, Canterbury's of all Sports Breakfast with Leslie
Murdock and might have ten mega supporting, local, proudly que
owned and operator news talks. It'd be just very it
bes for you. So listening close here I dods and
every norm news talks, he'd be It is fourteen minutes
pasted out. We're running a little bit late, so we

(00:20):
do apologize to Cole mconkie, He joins us from Dunedin. Cole,
good morning, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Good morning, Leslie. How are you this morning?

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Well, I presume you're down there?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Are you not quite later later this morning?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yeah? I've wondered about that because you would have caught
that other match, the elimination final match us today though
a bit of seeing it on the TV.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, a little bit. It was I felt like if
I if I put it on, I would have been watched,
sat down and watching and so now I keep kept
in churn with it. And obviously Auckland had a really
good result down there, So looking forward to lucking horns
with him again tomorrow. It's always always a great game
Canary or Aukland, and I'm sure one that the boys
will be up for.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Well, you are playing good cricket. Your team is certainly
playing good cricket, but it's not Hagley, it's down underneath.
And what kind of a difference will that be for you?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, quite a big difference in a way, I think. Yeah,
in New Zealand cricket, with the predetermined final locations, Dunedin
was the one for the Ford Trophy. So I think now, Hagley,
you know the big size boundaries and the pace and
the wicket, you know, we've really become accustomed to. But
Dunedin's obviously a fast, smaller ground and often can be

(01:35):
a little bit of a slower wicket, So a little
bit of adjustment there. But you know, we've got guys
in our team we've played played there plenty over the
last few years and as always it's just about adjusting
to conditions and playing what's in front of you.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
So yeah, a couple of trainings this week to prepare.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, we had had a couple of trainings this week.
The last couple of weeks have been pretty pretty hectic
in terms of games coming thick and fast. A little
bit of time to reach out, a couple of couple
of trainings, but yeah, the boys will be hopping on
that flight today, raring to go and we'll have a
bit of a run round this afternoon just to blow
out a couple of cobwebs.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Look, I know that there was a cool fat swirling
around this week. Three one run wins by Cannarbury and
fifty over cricket history, two of them this year. Small margins, right.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, small margins. It was. Yeah, we had a we
actually had a great one down a down in Andeeding
against Otago. I think we got three twenty odd and
they fell one run short. And then the last game
of the round robin against Auckland on Sunday at Ranguura
it was rain shortened, but yeah, one run victory and
you know that's just you know, wins like that can

(02:45):
make a season in terms of you know, winning those
close games and we know how close the competition is.
So it's great to have been in those pressure moments
already this season and even better to come out on top.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
You still love the fifty over format.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, I still love it. I think the ability to
get yourself back in a match if you have a
bit of a slow start or if the opposition have
a bit of a hot start, and you know wrestle
things back, and I think it's a really great format
and one I certainly really enjoy playing well.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Talking of people in hot form, Jimmy Nichsham yesterday, what
one hundred odd eighty two balls? Eventually I think Bev
and Jacobs and the runs again. How do you bowl
to somebody who's in the form of their life.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah, yeah, Niche is obviously, you know, a really really
clean ball striker, and on a small ground like that,
it can be tough to tough to defend someone like
that when they get going. So you know, it's just
about I suppose, staying to our plans, but keep trying
to be aggressive with the ball. I think often you can,
you can fall into the trap on smaller grounds in

(03:48):
New Zealand that you need to defend. But if someone
gets themselves in and with a bit of power, they
can be really tough to stop. So I think, especially
when the new batter comes in, it's about, you know,
having that attacking mindset, getting your catches in and trying
to keep taking wickets throughout that fifty overs. But you know,
Niche is one part of the puzzle. They've obviously got

(04:10):
a few dangerous batters you know finell and up the
top and Cam Fletcher that we're familiar with and dev
and Jacobs. So yeah, you know it should be a
great match. We've got some guys and some outstanding form.
So yeah, really looking forward to the fixture tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
So is it all about the toss? Winning the toss
and batting first?

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Not necessarily. I would have thought that Dunedan historically has
been a good chasing ground, you know, on a small ground,
knowing what you need to chase. Obviously Auckland did the
opposite way yesterday, so you know with the Halliburden Shield
Final there today, Otago Sparks and Auckland Hearts. So it

(04:51):
will be the third third day that we play on
it tomorrow, so that might factor into things in the toss.
But we'll just get down there and see what the
wickets looking like. Yeah, go from there.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Yeah, and I was going to ask you what track
you'd be on? So what about the playing eleven four?
Henry is Henry Nichols back after his calf injury? I know,
there'll we know Henry Shipley, he's picked up an injury,
hasn't he.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah, unfortunately Chippo He's had a bit of a tough
run with some injuries and yeah, he's picked up a
he's picked up a niggle. So yeah, but it's really
exciting for Henry Nichols he comes back into the squad.
So we're taking thirteen down and you know, to see
Henry go about his work over the last couple of
months and that's been hugely frustrating for him in terms

(05:38):
of trying to get back on the park, but he's
been incredibly, incredibly diligent with it, you know, his process,
and there was a couple of times when he was
close to making it back for a set smash game
but then just would have a minor set back with
that calf of his. But he's raring to go, and
you know, probably the beauty of a calf injury, he's
been able to bat for most of the period and

(05:59):
he's striking beautifully at the moment. It's just that running,
running load that he needed to get up. So he's
had plenty abouting under the belt. And yeah, he's looking
in great form heading into tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Oh fantastic. Well, I tell you what is a captain.
You are doing a fantastic job as always, and you've
just seemed to know when to change the bowl as
the field placings. All of that just such an important
part of the game. Have you heard from the black
Caps who are in Dubai at the moment, by.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Chance, Yeah, I've had I had a bit of a
chat with Maddy Henry and Tom Latham and they're obviously
going great guns over there. I think it's tough not
to be with the cricket that they're playing, but they
seem to have really enjoyed this tournament so far, and yeah,
they're going along Gray So I think they had a
couple of days off and Dubai and they enjoyed a

(06:47):
couple of the nice golf courses over there. But yeah,
they're really looking forward to the match against India. And
are they playing some great cricket at the moment.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yeah, indeed, as you are. As we said right at
the beginning, Cole, thank you so much coming to the phone.
I know how busy you are, but travel well and
all of your best for.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
That final cheers. Thank you very much, Leaslie appreciate it
and you have a great day.
