Speaker 1 (00:00):
Newstalk Seed Think it's twenty two minutes passed eight. Well
Tomorrow twelve thirty five at Apollo Projects it is Mutter
two up against the Hurricanes Power and joining us on
the program as head coach Whitney Hanson, good morning, good morning.
Well last week what a great win well against the
chiefs Man And when I was speaking to people up
(00:21):
in the North Island, I have to say Whitney that
most people were not picking the Mutter two to win,
but what a great game.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah, we definitely didn't go in as favorites on the TV,
but you know, we knew what we wanted to do
and you know, in the first half I think saw
it coming together and then the second half managed to
put it together.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Great tries and great teamwork.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, Erica because exciting and I think it then the
skill set of the fifteen and twenty three that those
that come on off the bench as well. So it's
exciting to see it.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
For the match tomorrow against her Cane's Power, who didn't
have a great first up match though, what are you expecting?
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, like I said a few times this season, in
last season as well, you know, the competitions in a
space where no team can be taken lightly and last
week's result is just that. So you know, for us,
we celebrated the win after the weekend and then became
focused on what we're doing this week, and we know
that they would have gone away from there and you
(01:26):
know been I guess inspired to look a little deeper
in search the harder and that will be pretty formidable
this weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
So if you break down parts of your game that
you were thrilled with, you'd have to be very happy
with your pack.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah, Like, I think there's some things here where we
can still look. Consistency in that space that can be somewhere.
We put real pressure on teams and we did that sometimes,
but we probably we probably weren't super consistent in that.
I think that, you know, our defense really stood up,
which is awesome. There's a physicality there which we just
(02:03):
see prize every year, and the ability to work for
each other was really evident last.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Week when I was watching the game. It was evident
to me when you think we're not only the or
picky competition itself, but previously far Apartmercup in the quality
of women's rugby, I mean, the speed, especially the consistency
of players throughout the four franchises and the speed in
(02:29):
which you're playing the game. You've always been able to
catch and pass superbly well, but just everything it has
taken up a few notches. And I guess when you
look at the international game, we have to take it up.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yeah, we've been probably a little bit behind that aporn
chasing that professionalism, and you know, you look at the
country like England, they're away bit ahead of us on that.
So there does need to be a need to chase it.
But the exciting thing is that we are seeing that
in the skills it and I think too there's a
(03:01):
piece around the depth and position in numbers of girls
playing the game, because even beyond FBC, you know, you
go down to under eighteen tournaments and a large number
of those players that are coming through, even Azill is
under sixteenth. So the future definitely brought for the ones game.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yeah, and even the kicking, like and I'm talking about
kicking at goal, the power that the women are getting.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Yeah, Like, we rewind back to the last World Cup
and you know, there was a bit of a chat
and an amongst the coaching group, and one of some
of these things was, you know, We're not able to
change distance on kicking. We're not going to change what
we've gotten in the group that we've got. So how
do we play a different game and maybe don't utilize
a kicking game. When you look to those playing now,
(03:49):
you know a young Kynepia has got an amazing boot
on her. Hannah King, Mike Joseph, I think actually kickstrack
could be something that becomes a massive out of New
Zealand's game.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah. Absolutely, And it just looked to me the athleticism
that's apparent across the fore franchises. It's just increasing every
time there is a game on TV.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Yeah. I think it used to be a little bit
of as a point of difference, whereas now it's just
becoming the standard that sets. And that's just professionalism, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Yeah? Absolutely, So you talked about the word professionalism, So
in terms of England being ahead of us, what is it?
Is it the mental professional approach or is it physical training.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
I think they've had opportunities to train for longer than
we have in that professional space, and that does make
a difference when you get to come into a weekend
and be fully professional and actually have time to do
the things like meal prep and recovery, like all those
things make a massive difference lead alone, just the actual
(04:52):
leader train. So we are there and we continue to
grow that. And the longer and that and more people
we give opportunity to do that, the more you can
create that depth in that space.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Absolutely, But one of the good things about tomorrow's match
for you is that you're able to use pretty much
an unchanged lineup from last week, three sets of sisters
on the playing field, one set off with yourself and
Jesse in the hierarchy in the three playing sets of sisters.
It's a pretty cool thing.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Yeah, it's very special. I hope that bond that you
have with your sister in particularly for the groups that
we have in our team are you know, super close
and to be able to go out and do what
you love with one of your best snaps is pretty special.
So we'll all enjoy that moment and the moments we
get desirable privilege.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Absolutely, And just in terms of International Women's Day, doing
anything special.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah, we're actually going to wear a purple Juicy and
so we only comes out on special occasions and we
thought this was a really special one to acknowledge not
only the amazing woman who get to wear it and
those in the group that have supported them to be
there that week, but also all the women that have
(06:08):
come before and paved the way. You know, it's fat
quote around standing on the shoulders of giants and we
wouldn't be where we are today without them, so so
a nod to them and an acknowledgment of everything that's
gone before.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Well, fantastic Whitney Hanson, thanks for joining us this morning.
We wish you all the best, can't wait for the
match tomorrow and go really well.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Thanks very much for more from used talks that'd be
listen live on air or online, and
