Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, it's the awkward time of the year where we
have got the finish of the summer sports season and
the beginning of the winter one. But let's go to
christ Church Metro Cricket the end of the club season
and welcome the ad general manager Mike Carvey back to
the air waves.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Good morning, Good morning, Leslie, and good morning to all
the listeners.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
And where are we at now? You must have a
very good idea of how are the clubs and where
they've finished for twenty twenty four to twenty five.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, in most cases we have, Leslie. But there's still
a couple of big games today, probably the biggest one
of the Premier Women's Final, so that's between Sydenham and
Old Boys Collegians. So this is the fifty over final
and they started early in October and have been progressing
right through the season. So a big game for both
of those teams today and extra special because it's going

(00:46):
to be played on Hagley Oval. So a great opportunity
for our local women's club season to finish on a
high with that final, and especially being played on Hagley
OVAL's a great thrill for all the players.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Sure is now overall? How do you see the season
panning out in.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
The Premium men's grade, that's sort of still go down
to the wire as well. Burnside West well in front
of this is the two day competition, it's finishing today
and the only team that can catch them now is
Lancaster Park. So Lancaster Park would need to have a
really good day and hope Burnside don't go so well
today to catch them, So that'll be intriguing. Burnside West

(01:24):
have won the two day competition for the last two
years in a row, so they're going for a three
peak and they would be favorites going into the last day,
but Lancaster Park not out of the running yet, but
would take something special for them to catch them.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
And what about some of the lower grades. What's the
health like of club cricket here?

Speaker 2 (01:42):
There's been some really good play and we've sort of
have the final series throughout March for the lower grades,
so from Division three down to Division seven we have
finals today, so they play around robin series and then
sort of split in the pools. So a lot of
enthusiasm for those games, so that keeps them going to

(02:02):
the end of the season. One or two defaults with
winter codes sort of kicking in as you mentioned, but
generally things are in good heart and a lot of
clubs wrapping up the season this week with awards nights
and prize givings, so a good way to finish the
season and people can put their cricket gear away for
another year.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
There has been a five week module for secondary school
girls heading into the New Zealand Secondary School I guess
you called it a geographical playoff to make the finals.
How has that panned out?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
That's been really successful and a lot of the listeners
would know of the Willows Cricket Club out in North
Canterbury and they've been a great supporter of the Thursday
Night Girls Cricket. We've had twelve teams down there at
the Polo Grounds and the Willows have helped with providing
the cricket balls for the teams. We had the White
Ferns down there one night supporting the players and finished

(02:53):
that with a barbecue about ten days ago, so that
was some real positive stuff and great to see about
one hundred girls down there on a Thursday night. And
then as you said, that sort of flowed into the
first eleven Girls Cup qualifiers this week where we had
seventeen teams from around Canterbury down at Hagley Park fighting
it out and the top team this year was Margaret's

(03:14):
College and they'll go through to represent Canterbury in the
National finals. And that's the first time I think the
competition started around nineteen ninety four that some Margarets have
done it. So congratulations to Amanda Hardy who has put
a huge amount of work and that's some Margaret's cricket
to get the team across the line and they beat
a very very good Craighead team from South Canterbury in

(03:34):
the finals. So it was a great three days of
cricket and seventeen teams down there, so great for the
girls to have those numbers. It's about twenty percent of
adult and youth cricketers are females, not New Zealand Cricket
to a census, but that seems to be more than
we've had four Normally it's around that ten percent mark
of our total playing bats of females, but seems to
be a bit more than that this year, which is good.

(03:56):
Our youth season finishing this weekend as well, so first
Eleven's they have a two day competition this season Crochitch
Bores High have got that wrapped up with a round
to go, so well done to them. But certainly throughout
the lower grades has been some hard for cricket, and
the likes of Northwest Sydenham Shirley Boys they're going to
be looking to come up to the top tier in

(04:17):
the fourth term to take on some of the larger schools,
so it's been some competitive cricket. There's been a lot
of interschool matches for the youth as well, so it's
been very busy and I'm sure that some of the teachers,
coaches and volunteers will enjoy a few months off before
they get back into.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
