Speaker 1 (00:00):
About sports. Canterbury's Have All Sport Breakfast with Leslie Murdock
and might a ten mega supporting local friendly key we
owned and operator New's talks.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
He'd be talks, he'd be. It's twenty away from nine
o'clock and a big apology to Terry Waghorn, who is
the golf operations manager out at Pegas's Golf Club. He's
probably got duties today and we've made them late.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Good morning Terry, Good morning Leslie. How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Oh really good? Sorry about that. There's so much to
get in. We just need to fit it all in,
don't we do we do?

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Indeed?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Well, you are a legend out at the Pigas' Golf Club.
How many years have you been there, Terry?

Speaker 1 (00:33):
I started, I was, and I'll remember of the golf club.
Are joined in January twenty ten and I've been working
there for the last eight and a half years.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Amongst your other duties, North Canterbary Golf Club Subcommittee, lots
of other things that you do. You must love your golf.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Yeah. I had seven years as the chairman of the
North Canterbury Subcommittee, which I enjoy and I stalled the
club representative on the committee and it's all about making
golfers possible for as many people as possible.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Well, I'll tell you what, it never ends for you
because I think you currently manage one of the longest
running tournaments in Canterbury. We're talking about the Pegass Mid
Week Tournament. How long has this been running?

Speaker 1 (01:14):
This has been going? I started that eight years ago.
When I first started at Pegasus, we had Wednesdays, which
trustingly but quiet for us, unlike a lot of other
golf clubs because of the demographic of our members that
they sort of work during the week. So we wanted
to come up with for an idea to generate some
traffic through the place, and we've helped the idea of

(01:34):
him in the Middleweek tournament and it's just gone from
strength to strength over the years. Now we newly have
about sort of ninety to one hundred players every month
generally that's pretty full and I think it's one of
those tournaments it's just gathered its own momentums go it
goes really well. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Look, one of the things we keep saying during this
segment is that since COVID Golf has really been the
benefactors of not only the casual golfer, but for club
people to get into a golf club as well. I
mean the numbers have gone up so much.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yes, they have, you find it, and a lot of
younger players to get into the game too. You generally
find we're traditionally used to find that. Like me, I
started golf when I was twelve. I played for about
ten years and then had about a twenty year hiatus
where didn't play a lot of golf because the family
and career comes into it. So that's sort of the
golf was sort of from twenty five to forty five

(02:30):
is used to be a rare beast, but we've seen
more and more of them now coming out to play
with different work weeks, et cetera. So there was a
change of demographical if you like, I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
I've been pleased to see. And I don't catch the
bus that often, but I have in the last month
caught the bus a couple of times. And young guys
and I'm talking probably twelve thirteen year old, whether it
was the holidays, getting on with the bags of golf
clubs and hopping off at the golf course. I mean,
it's just such an easy way to get around. You're right,
not only that age group, but younger ones.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Yes, it's good to see the younger ones getting out
and doing something in the free shiere, getting away from
their screens. We have quite a few keen junior members
and your carriage as much as we can to to
come out and play and to play with the senior
members as well, so that they're just not playing in
their own group, but they're getting a bit of a
grounding going forward.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Well, it's such a big area now that you are
involved without at Pegasus. I mean, it's just growing exponentially,
isn't it.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
With people It is with biggus this down there, it's
pretty much full. And we've got Ravens with across the
road and a new development planned next to Raymonds With
in the next four to five years. So the North
and A area is going to grow and we are
seeing a lot more traffic, especially on the Driving Range.
A lot of people come to the Driving Range, hits
some golf balls and start getting into it that.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Way, and you're only twenty minutes away from the center
of the city.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Yeah. Back when I first started, We'll live in North
Canterbury and played golf at Pegasus people sort of think
it was Uscar Cup lunch in the water bowls, yet
get out there to play. It used to be destination,
but now it's twenty minutes from the northern side of
town and we're getting a lot of players from out
that way, and we're also getting a lot of members
starting to join us from christ Church, so they realize

(04:14):
that there's only twenty minutes now and during the weekend particularly,
it's a nice easy commute.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
So apart from the Pegasus midweek tournament, what else have
you got coming up?

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Okay, we've got on satur Days at Demblus sixth we've
got the our Piguss Open, which is open to everybody.
It's limited to field of one hundred first one hundred
paid entries, so I think we're about to sixty one
or left work on Thursday there was sixty confirmed entries.
You can acquire about that at the pro shop. And
we're also pleased to have an October return of a

(04:46):
child Store event to Pegasus. It's the Club Car Club
Car Basic and Association with Power Turf and us Inn
in Golf, and that's the week of October seventh, which
is a program, and then the eighth ninth and tenth
other fifty four whole child to event that conjuncts with
New Zealand Golf.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Very god So, Terry, you have to tell me what
do you are you playing a lot these days? What's
your handicap?

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Ah, I've had a few help issues, man, it gets
playing it to a thirteen. I talk fine place or
three times a week kidding out the ten o'clock tea
time today that's been put back a bit by the frost.
But yeah, not trying to play three times a week
as much as I can. And any holes in one, No,
I've never had a hole in one, Leslie. I'm not
one of those lucky people.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Isn't it amazing? And the major tournaments that you can
still get golfers get holes in one like roll Fox recently.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Yep, that's it's all about playing the perfect shop. I've
witnessed a few, but I've never had the good fortune
to have one myself.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Well, well, I'm hoping that it will happen quickly for you.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
I hope so too.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Well, thank you so much for coming to the phone
on a frosty morning and enjoy the work. I know
that you're doing a great job out there, they're lucky
to have you and yeah, just keep up the fantastic
work out pigases.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Thanks Leslie, appreciate your call.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Thank you, Terry Waghorn. Always great to talk to these
golf people around the city and on the outer parts
of our lovely province.
