Speaker 1 (00:00):
De be Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's good morning, Leslie.
Speaker 1 (00:03):
Lovely to chat with you again, and a lot to
look forward to in the Pollock Cup.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Yes, yeah, we have an exciting season coming up and
really looking forward to that, both with Pollock and the
REP year at REP season.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
So good number of teams in Pollock.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Cup, well, we're sticking. It's sick and it seems to
be the sixth largest clubs mostly participating and I can't
seem to entice get anyone else to make up a
team to participate. So six it is at the moment,
(00:40):
and it would be good if I could get another
couple of clubs to come on board. But I know
they're a bit short of low market players, which is
probably prohibitive of them wanting to put their name forward.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yeah, lot, we know lots of people are playing the game.
But you're absolutely right. It's the top end, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yes, yes, it is.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
So who do you think looks strong? I know you're
putting unique on the line.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Here, Okay, Well, looking at the makeup of the teams
this year, pretty much roughly again on paper, they're looking
hard to challenge, although christ Church also are really in
that mix. Both have three current REP squad members and
(01:27):
christ Church have four past, very fine past players in
their team. However, in saying that, as I said, there
are the teams are looking strong. It won through four
in their players of six. So again, on the day
it could have, it could go anyway. So I'll stick
(01:48):
my head out and say Russie Christ's Church. I know
roughly one last year, why Mighty Beach the year before,
christ Church the year before, So you know we've all
had turns, might be clear Water and Herewood and why
did Garry's turn?
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Well, it's made to go around, isn't it. That's the
beauty of it, I think so, yeah, absolutely so. And
what of the representative program? What does that bring?
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Well? Pollock Cup, as everyone knows, kicks off our representative season.
It is a really good indicator for selectors to look
at the up and coming players, players whom we might
have come into the district we might not have seen.
(02:34):
And once we get through our Pollock Club Cup excuse me,
which is a match play event off the stick, then
we can play against we can move into the REP season,
which has fixtures through September, October, November and December.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Who are the players that you are looking to get
into that rep Tim Will it change much from last year?
I guess it's dependent on form, of course, but you
must have a core group of players that you're looking at.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yes, we do have a squad of about ten and
realistically we've only lost Alisha Wren to study overseas. She's
moved out and moved away and she was a very
fine player for Canterbury and winning many events. We have
(03:26):
got a pool of really young up and coming players
have been worked really hard over this last season on
their golf and you know, we've got a number who
are now scratch or they're abouts golfers, have put the
work in and so you know, fortunately it's probably going
(03:48):
to be a bit of a head scratcher to decide
who to leave out of our six person team, which
is the prize at the end of the year being
the New Zealand, and.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
To provo who are some of those players?
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Well, the players in the squad. We've got two more
senior players, olive a Tapu and she's here for her
tenth representative year. Chontalia William came from Wellington, I believe,
and is down here playing now for Waiter Carey. We've
got a group Vanessa Lim, Lexi Thompson Hall, Juni Chang,
(04:26):
a the Yin Zaria born, Alice Frye, Lani Innui and
Subin Bay, all of them playing some pretty fine golf.
And I'd probably say in there that Juni Chang, who
played in the team last year, won six of her
seven games she played at the New Zealand and Provincials,
(04:47):
so you know, looking to her, that's the caliber that
we're looking at. And I really I'm really excited about
having to select a team from that group because they're
all good golfers.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Goodness, I wish you all the luck trying to do that,
and let's hope they have an absolutely bouting Pollock Cup.
So it makes it as hard as it can be
for you.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Yes, Well, the good thing is that in most cases
they're in separate teams, so they'll be playing against each other,
which is always a good idea for us to really
look at them with a critical eye and see how
they manage that.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
So when do we hear about the timing of the
first squad announcement.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Well, we've got the first We've got that squad now
that has already been Those girls have indicated that they
are wanting to be in the mix. Then the first
fixture will be on the fourteenth and September against Arangi.
This is a fixture that has played annually and ash Burton,
(05:49):
so it's on the course that the New Zealand Enterprise
is going to be played at this year. So September
is the first one. And then there's the New Zealand
Girls into provincial at the end of September and into October.
That's a biggie too because that's a week it's a
very tough week of match playing. All those young ones
will be playing in that and then that's followed into
(06:10):
the women's South of the South Island into provincials and
that happens in mid October.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Right, so I've diary those, so that's really important. We'll
probably come back to you after the fourteenth and just
to the fat on show what it looks like TB.
Scott and you do a magnificent job there for the
women and golf here in this province.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Thank you very much, Leslie.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
And keep warm today oh you too, yes, oh well
it is winter, it is winter. Yeah, magnificent. Thank you
