Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, I guess when you make these decisions, they're not
easy ones to make. Like, you know, you're really excited
about where you're going, but obviously realizing you are saying
goodbye to it chapter as well, So mixed emotions. But
I think the last five years leading up to this,
when with the Tactics sort of you know it's been
(00:20):
a lot of work and finally getting to that point
and getting what you've been after for so long, you
do want to leave it on a high note. And
I guess you'll see that with most of teams as well,
Like once there is you know that when there's quite
a lot of players that move on to their next chapter.
So obviously have built so much memories and relationships within
(00:45):
the tactics and the chrish it Cannebry environment. It's definitely
sad leaving it behind, but you know every endings a
new beginning as well, so really looking forward to the
next chapter.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
So, Karen, your new team is the Sunshine Coast Lightning
as part of this Australia Super Netball competition. Can you
tell us the reasons why they're the team you've perked.
What is it about them that proved such an attractive
proposition for you.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, I think when well, when I was going through
the reasons for trying making this decision for me personally,
it was around developing my game and playing with and
amongst players that I'd come across in the international area,
and that just meant, you know that that happens to
be in the SECN competition, and I think having the
(01:34):
eligibility open and so many other players having this opportunity
as well, I think it'll be really good to have
some kind of familiarity and have some faces around that
that I'm used to, and I think it'll be quite
fun when we do come up against each other in
that scense. But the deciding on where I was going,
I wanted to go somewhere where I'll be immersed with
(01:57):
that mentality of wanting to play a game and with
players I've not been with before, and I think that
was sort of my driving factor. So good today that
I'll definitely be learning heaps and I'll be a new
b in that environment, but then coming up against other teams,
I'll see some familiar faces, which will will be quite nice.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah, just on there, I was gonna ask, what do
you think it's going to be like playing against the
Jane Watson or you know, marking a supplier so ilby Rickett.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah, I mean, she's just they're all like, what Mad's
color and keeps it. It's just one an hour and
a half away or a couple hours away, so you know,
if we do feel like we miss a little bit
of the key we sent a humor and want to
link up, I'm sure it's only a quick drive away.
So I'm really excited to be able to see what
(02:51):
all of us can do with our talent in our
school and learning so much new things and coming up
against other amazing athletes, and you know, being able to
bring that talent then in the learnings back home into
our competition eventually and showing the young ones here and
giving the young ones the opportunity. Actually, I think we
(03:13):
were so worried about those who are leaving, we're not
actually considering all the opportunities we are giving to the
young ones coming through. And yes, there is that little
bit of concern around whether those players are ready, but
you're never going to know unless you give them the opportunity.
So it's going to be a bit of a learning
curve for the first year or two. But you know,
I'm pretty sure there's lots of young ones that are
(03:36):
raring to go and they just want that opportunity and
I think they'll grab it and do wonderful things.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
I want to touch on your time with the Tactics.
Car in five seasons with the Mainland Tactics and of
course finally this year you get the A and Z
Premiership title. You've been close, but to finally do it
this year, I know I was super special. What does
this team mean to you?
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yeah, I guess My netball started back in Wellington and
I was there for about four years before I made
this move to christ Church, and it's been so long
ago that, you know, I only really remember lots of
this stuff in the Canterbury region and it feels like
it's been only just the other day that I went
down there, but actually it's been five years. On the
(04:23):
other hand, I feel like I've been there for ages,
and I think over that long time, you definitely do
build really good relationships and connections, and it starts feeling
like home, being able to have been in a group
where majority of the players have stayed the same with
the same desire to take that cup, especially for the
(04:46):
region that haven't had it for what twenty eight years.
I think that was very special to finally be able
to hold up that cup with the same group of
people were a big, large group of people that I
started it with. It's been a massive journey for us,
lots of ups and lots of downs, and I think
that's a really fitting way to close that chapter for
(05:08):
so many of us who have now decided to move
on to that next chapter. And we're really excited for
each other as well and what that looks like and
really supportive of each other to make a success of it.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
And one thing that's always struck me Ka, and this
is gonna be said for the other players too, but
you've always got so much time for the fans. I
see at the season ending awards a couple of weeks ago,
your fans Player of the Year. Maybe again, what message
do you have for the fans here and the tactics
so as you say, have rowed the highs and lows
(05:42):
with you.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah, I mean, look, we and I know it sounds
really cliche that we say we can't do what we
do without them, but that is really true. They support
us day in, day out and allow for us to
be at this level and play at this level and
consistently do it this way. You know, I love connecting
with those and giving back in a sense. I know
(06:04):
they feel like they're giving us a lot, but that
we're giving them a lot, but they actually do us
a lot. And I guess that's just the least I
can do to show my appreciation for allowing me to
be on this platform through what they do. So always
happy to have a chat and have a young and
just go back where I can.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
And just lastly, Karen, now look, I really appreciate your
time here on the Canabory All Sports Breakfast. There will
be a lot of fans there going. Goodness me, it's
going to be so different in twenty twenty six. For
the Tactics, you're leaving, Jane's leaving seven players total, Ali
Bird to Pius Selby, Rickett, Paris Locker too, Charlie Fiddler,
(06:44):
Martina Salmon, most recently announcing she won't return. What is
your message to the fans of this team given all
of that change, what would you say to them?
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Look at I think with any thing, you're going to
have your ups and downs. The amazing thing for especially
our Canterbury region has been that regardless of the ups
and downs, we've had major support from our fan base.
And obviously it's going to look very different. There's going
to be lots of new faces. But I would just,
(07:18):
I guess asked to not write it off just yet.
All of us who are where we are now and
I just have decided to leave, had to start somewhere,
and so there's just a group of young ones who
will eventually a few years time be the likes of
us who are now deciding to move on to other chapters.
(07:39):
And I think it's giving them the time and day
and supporting them for that as well. You know, they've
been working really hard in the background. You know, our
in and L group won their league as well, and
we've had players in and out of our training environment
and they're really eager. So I would just, you know,
don't write them off just yet. I think there'll be
(07:59):
a little bit of uncertainty and maybe a bit of
teething process, but you've got to stay positive about it.
And you know, we've got, like I mentioned, the fan
base have been amazing, so just to keep that up
would be amazing.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Well, Karen again, thank you so much for taking the
time out of your busy schedule. I know you've been
in silver Ferns camp this week up in Auckland. All
the best for Watts to come. We will have you
down here a little bit later in the year when
the silver Ferns play Australia here in christ Here. It's
very much looking forward to that. But go really well
over there at the Sunshine Coast Lightning. You will be
missed here in Tactics Country. Thank you for everything you've
(08:35):
done for our region and again just wishing you all
the very best. Thanks again for your time.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Awesome. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
