Speaker 1 (00:00):
To the cricket all. I guess he's had a bit
of a break. I'm talking about Matt Boyle. What an
innings yesterday for Canterbury. Not only that did he score
one hundred and fifty six not out coming in at
number six, he also scored seventy in the first innings
as well, so I think that makes it look something
like two hundred and twenty six for the match. Matt,
Good morning, congratulations.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Morning Lizzie, thank you very much, thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
How are you going? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Really good? Hey, what an interesting game though, So Northern
Districts they batted first made two hundred and thirty seven
and then Canterriby batted two hundred and forty eight, so
eleven run win and then Northern District's three eighty and
then Canterby at one stage were I think fifty one
for four chasing that three seventy to win. I think
(00:44):
you came in, was that when you came to the
wicket when it was about fifty four for four or
fifty four for five.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yep, yeah, sure was yeah yesterday morning. So you came
to a came to the crease with a very calm
and relaxed Chad Bowers.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
You though, so we were you? Was he relaxed?
Speaker 2 (01:04):
He was calm and relaxed.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
I was a little bit anty, but yeah he made
it seem very very relaxing, which was good.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Yeah, well he got a very good ton, didn't he
to set off that chase and fairness I'd appreciate.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
He definitely broke the back of it and he made
it look very easy out there as well.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
So yeah, he was the previous.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Today, so mainland oval out Europe? Was it? Did it?
Was it a little bit sort of slow to start with,
given when you look at those first inning scores?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
It's it's always quite a bizarre sort of micro climbing
out there.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
I suppose it's.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
It's never really when you when you when the toss,
you don't really look down at the watcht You sort
of look up at the sky and see if it's
going to do you know, anything with the condition, so
you can sort of have what seems like, you know,
three three different wickets and across the space of four days.
So I definitely approved for a good result work it.
(02:00):
But yes, it's always quite a hard one to pack
well for.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
You though, getting the seventy you'd seen a good look
at it in that first inning. So coming out joining
Chad Bows, knowing that you were chasing significant runs for
the rest of the day, how did you go about
settling down and just getting you know, nutting it out.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
I think, you know, like I said, with Chad being
so calm and relaxing, that was that was definitely reassuring.
I think you know, when you're chasing a big total
like that and you come and reason the earlier in
the day and you know essentially how long you've got,
you can just sort of go out there and back
and we sort of talked about not really worrying about
(02:46):
what was actually on the scoreboard, you know, for the
first couple of sisions, and we can sort of come
back to it, as Chad said, five pm that night,
and to see whether or not we I suppose if
we're in a good enough phosition to chase the chase
to the rest of the total.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
So yeah, I suppose you just sort of go out there.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
With a hopefully we have a free mind and nice
and relaxed and you just go out there and bath.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
So and then Ched went out and Mitch Hay came in.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yes, and Mitch was. He was brilliant.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
You know, it's not easy to start it there. I
think it's just as a nature of it being quite slow.
It's quite hard to get the pace of the wicket initially.
And the ND bowlers there they're superb and got a
number of different plans and variety and stuff like that.
So Ye matured a really good job to come in
there and ic ic the.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Chase in the end.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
So what time of the evening did you finish? Because
I was trying to keep an eye on it online
as well as sit back and watch the ashes to
be fair, But what time of the day was it finished.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
I must have been around half five or just before that.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
I think, yeah, long day.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah, yeah, no, it was nice. It's it's definitely one
of the more rewarding you know, playing at Shield ones
when you when you win it in the last session
of day fourth.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
So for you when you think about the whole family connection.
In the other match, of course, your older brother Jack
had scored one hundred and fifty six for a targo,
which was remarkable that match against Wellington they had three centurions,
but he started the way, so you know, when you
look back to the way that you two have been
brought up, and of course Lucy in the middle, did
(04:20):
you play much backyard cricket, because there's a bit of
an age get between the two of you, isn't there.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Yeah, there is a bit of an age. Yeah, you know,
people don't really see it nowadays. We're pretty you know,
when we were together, we're sort of attached that that happened.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
We're about the.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Same height and at the same size nose, and we
looked very similar. So but yeah, there was definitely some
backyard cricket, probably up until he was about maybe.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Sixteen or a bit around that.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Sort of age where you sort of grow out of
us and I was still differentely teen to you know,
to keep playing. But yeah, so there was definitely some
grown up but probably not as much as you might expect.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
No, exactly, Well, right hand bet and you're a left
hand bet.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yes, I must have just one day stood on the
wrong side of it. So and yeah, that's suppose how
it's happened.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Quite interesting, isn't it. So you must have been watching
his progress for a tigo, Yes.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
I was, Actually, yeah, I was.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
I find it quite hard to keep up with the
with the other games during our own ones, but I
was definitely definitely keeping an air out and an eye
out for Jack's total. I actually had Brian Butler also
known as Ringy, out of the boundary yelling out to
me saying that Jacks had got the hundred, which was
which is a really cool feeling because I was it
(05:35):
wasn't easy out on the field, so it was a
nice little booster, you know, to get me through to the
rest of the session.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Oh my goodness, what would we do without people like
Brian Butler? Honestly is he? Yeah? That's great, isn't it?
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Brilliant?
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yeah, oh gosh, what a wonderful milestone. And you know,
not just for yourself, for Cannbury as well, but also
for Jack. And it's just I mean, would you call
yourself really good close brothers or adversary and competitive against
each other? How do you see your relationship?
Speaker 3 (06:04):
We're yeah, super supportive of almost too much, too much
so when we're playing against each other as well, So
you know, I get a bit of stake for us
around when we play Jeff, but no, it's I you know,
I really enjoy seeing Jack success and you know, it's
a super hard work of the game and Yeah, for
him to have that that start of the Plucket shields,
(06:26):
you know, after making them move down to to daned,
and it's yeah, super exciting.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
I'm really stoked for him, So it's it's awesome to see.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Well, he'll clearly be stoked for you as well. And
you know, look, when you think about the game itself
and how it's transpired, do you think that you should
be betting any higher than six?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Well, I was actually supposed to about five that we.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Had a night watchmen.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Of course, yes, yes.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
So I think I'm pretty happy at five.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
I think you know that it only gets harder the
further rupby guy, I suppose with Red Walo cricket. So
I'm pretty happy, you know, coming off the field in
and then taking my shoes and socks off and parking
up in my training kit for for a while and
watch the proper betters do it at the top. So no,
I'm pretty happy at five for now. But I'll just
I'll just get very on push and do whatever I
(07:17):
can for the team.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
I suppose it sounds good. You sound as though you
had to get your pads on quite quickly anyway, But
I am putting it all down to those morning dips
with Kyle Jamison down at Scarborough.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I was wondering if you won't mention that. Yeah, I
think there's definitely an element of helping from there.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
So yeah, yeah, it's been pretty cold but through there.
But I can happily tell you now the temperature sitting
nearly sixteen.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Yeah, it's farvina now, which is nice. I think I'll
be out there this morning, so it'll be nice.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Oh you deserve it, Matt Boyle, thanks so much for
coming to the phone again. Congratulations. It's mighty concentration to
be able to get to one hundred and fifty six,
not only that the seventy you've got in the first innings,
but it's got a great future ahead of you. Well done.
