The Men’s Interprovincial tees off at the Manawatu Golf Club, Palmerston North, in early December. Canterbury last claimed the title in 2020 (and before that in 2000), so it’s been a lean run—but hopes are high for 2025.

Matt McLean, Canterbury Golf’s Participation Co-Ordinator, Men’s Selector, and Assistant Manager of the Men’s Interprovincial Team joined Lesley Murdoch for a chat ahead of the tournament.

In association with the Elmwood Trading Company.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
News Talks EV twenty five away from nine o'clock. Time
to talk golf as we're always grateful to that Homeward
Trading Company. To Matt McLain, Matt, good morning, good morning,
how are you very good? Thanks? Now you're not only
the Canterbury Golf Participation coordinator at Canterbury Golf, but you're
also a Canterby men's selector as well as assistant manager
of the men's inter provincial team. Now the inter Provincials

(00:23):
are just over a week away and they will be
played up at the Munu Or two Golf Club in Palmerston,
North I think December second. They start, well, you've got
a big job ahead of you to get on that.
Whether it's a shield or a cup, I'm not sure,
but get that Cannibury name engraved on it.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, definitely a very exciting week coming up for us. Yeah,
I'm definitely a bit of a last minute ringing in
terms of the manager's role. Unfortunately Jake Roberts, who's the
normal assistant manager, had to pull out last minute. So yeah,
being a sick during me being so close to team,
it was quite easy for me to.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Jump in and go and support the team.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
But yeah, it'd definitely nice to go and get a
name on the trophy game. It's been a few years
since we last won it.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Well, I'm sure they'll be trying hard, but so tell
us about the makeup of the team, the strengths, the
experienced special qualities.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah, so we've got a six man team going up there,
so five play each round and then his win one
is the reserve. So and number one this year is
Cooper Moore. So we've all know Cooper's qualities. He's just
been fantastic over the last two years, just getting better
and better, so we're very grateful to have him.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Available with his bity schedule.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
And then we've got Yuki Meyer at number two. Yuki,
he's been he's been playing phenomenal this year. He actually
finished second on the Charles to A rankings in New
Zealand and he had his first win Epigasus in October,
so his form's really good.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
At three, we've got Sam McGill.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Sam's probably, in my opinion, the best part time goalf
for in New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Sam won the matchplay for the second year in a
row recently at Herewood and he he lives for these moments.
He loves playing, loves loves representing Canary, and he's just
a really good guy to have around the team. At
number four, we've got Ethan Lamb who's actually making his
debut for.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Canary this year.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
So Ethan's been part of our talent development program here
in christ Rich for the last three years, I believe,
and he was also part of the boys team that
won the Junior individual this year, so he's had a
really strong year and he's pretty excited to make his debut.
At number five, we've got Cameron Grant. So Cam he's
been around the interrovidential scene for probably thirteen fourteen years,

(02:43):
so he's got plenty of experience at that level. I
actually remember our first when I was a junior playing
for Aeringhe I cadied for Cam in twenty twelve at
the individuals and that was probably his third or fourth
Individentials at that point, so he's got plenty of experience there.
And then reserve this year is Scott many Wethers. So Scott,

(03:04):
this is Scott's second Indivinials. His first time he played
for them was eleven years ago in twenty fourteen, so
Scott's had a really strong year this year. He was
part of the Harewood team that won wi Wood Cup
for the first time in thirty seven years this year
and he's had a pretty strong record, so I know
he's pretty excited to be going away again this year.
And then we've got Mike Taylor as our manager. He's

(03:26):
been the manager for six seven years now. He loves
this week, he loves.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Canbury. It's kind of a highlight of his year really.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
But yeah, we've got a pretty experienced team and a
lot of guys who know how to win, which is
pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
I was looking and listening to you saying, and it's
a really good team. I mean, who's going to be
your big opposition? Do you think gosh to match up
to that?

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, every year it seems to be Auckland. Auckland are
always strong Bay of Plenty as well. Last year we
unfortunately lost to them in the semi final at home
and it was yeah, we played well all week and
just when it came to that moment it's semi final, Yeah,
we kind of slipped up against them. So yeah, Awkin
and Bay of Plenty of kind of our ones we
always give an eye on.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
But yeah, at these events, anyone can really do it.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Yeah, well, the Mane or two Golf Club. What do
you know about it?

Speaker 2 (04:15):
It's layout, Yeah, so every year they have a chance
for event there in March April. So I played it
personally probably four or five times, so I know it
quite well. But it's basically an old school New Zealand
golf course with quite tree lined, long ruff and quick greens.
It has the opportunity to head on to other feaways
and you can get away with things like that. But

(04:37):
I'm sure they'll do a really good job there and
make it quite challenging being be a very cool match
play course. There's plenty of driverabill holes, plenty of decisions
you can make out there, so yeah, plenty of different
ways to play the course.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
When do you travel?

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Are we fly up Sunday next week?

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Okay, Sunday and you start month.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Tuesday, So yeah, Sunday we'll walk the course, then Monday
practice around and then straight into it on Tuesday.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
All right, Okay, you don't have to be too far
away accommodation wise.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
No, I don't. Personally.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
I think we're just staying in Palmerston, North Yeah, I
don't quite know. I kind of got a last minute
call up to the assistant managers. But I'm sure it's
all organized that we were staying.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, I'm sure it is. So what's the draw? Who
do you play first?

Speaker 2 (05:22):
We play we first, that we actually had the buy first, right,
and we play Poverty Bay. I'm just trying to think
of I think, and then I think we play one
or two long and which is the home team Taranaki, Waikato,
Auckland and Northland?

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Right?

Speaker 2 (05:38):
And then yeah, so then they changed the format a
little bit this year, so after those six matches, the
top two teams with the best record will go into
the final one Friday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Okay, so Paul will be watching with great interest. Scott,
I keep thinking about the teammate. This is just going
to be such a good team and a good year
I think for you guys five. So all we can
do is wish you all the very best and have
fun up there at man or two, because you've still
got to have fun even though you're playing for high stakes.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Yeah, this thing, we have a really good group.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
We all get on really well, and yeah, there was
plenty of fun off the golf course, but when it
comes to time on the course, well, yeah, we're definitely
going up there to try and when it and bring
Kroky back home.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
And just before I let you go, Matt McClain, your
role at Canterby Golf Golf Participation Coordination, you'll be pretty
happy with where things are at.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Yeah, yeah, where Yeah, we've got so much going on.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
We've actually got a Junior Open this Sunday at Bottle
At Golf Club and we've got ninety kids playing, which
is highest ever. Yeah, it's just crazy the amount of
numbers that are out there playing golf at the moment.
And yeah, everyone just seems to love the game, which
is awesome.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
No, it is really good. Well, I I'm here how
much passions in your voice as well, So very best
of luck in your new role and we'll be keeping
tabs on you. Thanks very much, Matt McClain.
