President Trump is weighing in on the years of delays in building a new “Air Force One.” Why has Boeing been so slow to build the airplane, and what makes it better than the 747s that have been in service since 1987? National Correspondent RORY O’NEILL is here with the story.

Our National Your Morning Show, Corspondert Roory O'Neil is here.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
You know, I don't know the president.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Why the president wants to take over the Post office?
Any wants now a new Boeing plane. Have you watched
the Boeing documentary? I would think he'd be stopping it.
But all right, so what's up with the new Air
Force one and where does it stand?

Speaker 4 (00:24):
Well, you'll remember that Donald Trump negotiated a better deal
for the new Air Force one back in his first term,
got a billion dollars taking off the price. But the
planes are late. It's actually two planes. They were supposed
to be delivered last year. But COVID really hit the
airline industry hard when it comes to manufacturing these things.

(00:45):
The supply chain disruptions. Boeing has been playing ketchup with
everybody airlines around the world, from Southwest and United to
some of the Emirates, airlines in the like, because the
manufacturing delays are just so long. Then add to that,
this is Air Force one. It's a little bit more
complicated than your typical London to New York plane.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
This would be a fun field trip for you and
I to take together. I didn't know the old Air
Force ones. They're all in Dayton, Ohio. Did you know that?
I didn't, and you have not all of them. But
I mean you can walk through Kennedy's. But no current
one is from what circa eighty seven? So how different
are these new ones? In like thirty seconds or less? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Well, the last one was ordered by Ronald Reagan and
got delivered to George H. W. Bush. These are the
seven forty seven eight series. Boeing doesn't even make seven
forty sevens anymore, so again, this is part of the complication.
Elon Musk has been brought in to try to see
if they can streamline things, but it's getting the tech
on board that's proven to be the big challenge.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
No etam when this will be done. Nobody's even paying a.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Rough Maybe one will be ready by twenty seven or
twenty eight, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
This is maybe JD's plane, not Trump's.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
All right, appreciate it, royan Neille, have a great weekend.
