Een AI-gestuurde drone die menselijke kampioenen verslaat: dat is precies wat er gebeurde tijdens de A2RLxDCL Drone Championship Grand Challenge, het officieuze wereldkampioenschap autonome droneraces. Dat viel zelfs Elon Musk op. En onze gast, Christophe de Wagter, onderzoeker aan de TU Delft, was aanvoerder van dat team. Het winnende team uit Delft zette een deep neural network in dat de motoren van de drone rechtstreeks aanstuurt. Daarmee wist de drone haar menselijke tegenstanders voor te blijven in een parcours waar snelheid, precisie en reactievermogen cruciaal zijn. Opmerkelijk is dat dit de eerste keer is dat een AI-systeem sneller vloog dan menselijke piloten in een officiële wedstrijd.Teams van over de hele wereld deden mee aan het toernooi.
De drone zelf ‘ziet’ via een camera en interpreteert beelden met behulp van onboard compute. Training gebeurt voornamelijk in virtuele omgevingen, waar duizenden vlieguren in dagen kunnen worden gesimuleerd. Daarna wordt het model gevalideerd in de echte wereld, waarbij er tijdens de wedstrijd nog kleine aanpassingen kunnen worden gedaan.
De doorslaggevende factor in deze technologie ligt steeds vaker aan de digitale kant: de kwaliteit van de algoritmes, niet per se de rotors of accu. Toch is er veel ruimte voor verbetering, bijvoorbeeld in efficiënt energiegebruik of compactere rekenkracht.
Toepassingen in de echte wereld liggen voor de hand: bij hulpverlening, inspecties of in de logistiek. Op het slagveld is de technologie al bijna realiteit: in Oekraïne worden AI-drones ingezet bij operaties waarbij ze deels autonoom doelen aanvallen. Door jamming en latency zijn verbindingen met de cloud onmogelijk, dus moet de AI lokaal draaien. Lokale verwerking is niet alleen efficiënter, maar ook veiliger in een oorlogssituatie.
