Speaker 1 (00:10):
So much you're listening to Amma Mia podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Mamma Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and waters
that this podcast is recorded on.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Hi everyone, Tam Holland Here with the Oscars madness in
full swing, Mamma MIA's entertainment podcast, The Spill is covering
it all, from celeb highlights to what went down behind
closed doors. But of course everyone's favorite part of the Oscars,
or maybe just my favorite part, is always the fashion.
I caught up with the Spill team to dish about
the standout looks from the Red carpet. So to give
(00:40):
you guys more of the good stuff, I thought you'd
enjoy the inside scoop. Here it is from Mamma Mia.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Welcome to The Spill, your daily pop culture fix. I'm
Laura Brodney.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
And I'm em Burnham and coming up on the show.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Today, it is the moment we have been waiting a
whole year for. Is our Oscars Red Carpet Special. We're
going to be talking the best, worst, and most significant
looks from the Red carpet today, along with a few
people who just try really hard and didn't get there.
We also need to talk about some scandals that happened
on the Red carpet, one that was over twenty years
in the making, and some couples that didn't walk the
(01:20):
Red carpet together but had some sneaky behavior once insides.
We're going to get into all of that, but first
we know you guys sometimes get tired of this joke,
but we're not a fashion podcast. Emily and I don't
have any fashion knowledge between us, and so we have
brought in a special guest and expert.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Hello everyone, Hello, My name is Tamara Holland. I am
a fashion editor and commentator and I've been talking about
celebrity fashion and red carpet style for about fifteen years,
even when nobody's listening. So people are listening, listening. I'm
here for it. I'm excited.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
So Tam is a guest host on Nothing to Wear,
our fashion podcast, also a fashion contributor to Mama Mia.
And in the years we've worked together, Tam on red
carpet days when I've looked at some of the red
carpet looks and just need to know, like who made that,
what's the significance of it? Is this a trend we
have to be watching. You're the first person always go
to whether in tein office or your Instagram. So we
had to get you in to do the proper fashion
(02:14):
commentary because you have a few standout looks you want
to share with us.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I do, I do. Look, I'm gonna be honest. For me,
this year's Red Carpet was missing a little bit of
star power for me. I'm just going to put it
out there. It did feel a little bit flat. I
think it had a bit more of a somber tone
in the wake of the fires, and the celebs seemed
to be playing it quite safe this year. So we
did still have some beautiful looks with really intriguing details
that I want to extract, but not as much drama.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
As I was hoping someone would break the mold and
just do a standout dress. But everyone did a safer
version of the look they've been doing all the waters. Yeah,
so everyone wore the same dress.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Now I'm kidding, But we did get a lot of
like sparkling silver column dresses. I'm going to talk about
some of the significant looks for me that really stood
out for better or for worse. So I'm going to
start with my strongest look of the night.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Drum roll. So that's really annoying.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
One contribution, not cliche, all drum roll Ariana Grand Day
in SCAPAREI ought Couture by Daniel Rosebrey. I had this
gown on my Oscars wish list since the Coture shows
in January and waiting for it to come out. We
hadn't seen it yet this award season. I knew that
meant that it was probably reserved for an A lister.
While being interviewed, Ariana Grande said on the Red Carpet
(03:26):
that this was one of her favorite dress, if not
her favorite dress she's ever worn. And you can see why.
It has a strapless, sculptural, pale pink bodice with this
exaggerated peplem and this tull skirt featuring one hundred and
ninety thousand crystal sequins and rhyanstones, that is a lot
of sequence. It's definitely nodding to Glinda to Wicked Bit
in a really high fashioned way, and that's kind of
(03:48):
what I was hoping she would deliver on this red carpet.
This was so striking from every single angle, and you
could see she felt beautiful in it. And what I
love about this gown for her is that she wasn't
shrinking away. Sometimes I feel like she kind of she's
in a statement gown, but she's shrinking. And for this
I just felt she grew and she looked one hundred
feet tall.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Oh my god, you explain. That's so when I first
saw that dress, I was like, I wonder what she's
hiding under there?
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Oh, yes, I know. It's really nice.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
She can lean her arms on it as well. It's
like a good arm rest.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Yeah, Like how do you sit down in this dress?
A question that comes up for me.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Yeah, especially because she and Cinthia Arrivo have been dressing
in their wicked color since before the movie came out,
so they've done nearly two years of wearing pink and
green on the red carpet. So when it came to
the Oscars, I thought, like, what is left for her?
Every pink look?
Speaker 1 (04:39):
But that did feel fresh, Yes, And this was custom
made by an American designer, Daniel Roseberry, who's a fun fact.
He's one of the only I believe, American designers at
a French or cature house, so it's a big coupe
for him. Everyone does want to wear Scaparelli now, and
I think Ariana was maybe the only one on the
night who did so. I just thought effortless stunning. She
nailed it for me. Ok Onto the next the divine
(05:02):
Lupeita Neongo wore custom Chanel. She's an ambassador for the house.
She wore a white pleated dress with silver embellished bodice
and straps made of pearls twenty two, four hundred and
ten of them to be precise. The dress was inspired
by an archival Chanel couture look from nineteen seventy four,
but it brought to mind for me a more infamous
(05:24):
dress that the actress wore exactly ten years ago to
the Oscars. It was a pearl embellish gown by Calvin Klein.
Do you remember why this is significant? Yes?
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Wait, I don't remember this.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
It comes with a hell of a story. So the
dress was actually stolen from her hotel room. The thief
returned it because the valuation for the gown Calvin Klein
provided was one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. But famously
the thief returned it because he had the pearls valued
and they were fake, so he was like, nah, I
don't want it. I'll just dropped that by the hotel.
(05:55):
I gave it instructions for website, and so I wonder
if Chanell's pearls were real. I think a caveat for
lou Piter on this one was the pearls must be real.
They must be on the poor thing.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
She got her dress dolen and like I went out
there that the.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Pearls weren't even real.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
She's hotel safe tonight, I know, but just flawless from Lupitza.
She's the perfect marriage with this house. I think she
now sometimes she now can get a little bit tired
and boring on the red carpet, let's just say it.
And I think sometimes the ambassadors don't necessarily feel like
they matched the brand. And for me, Lupita just she
wears gowns. She wears fashion so well, and this is
(06:32):
yet another perfect execution of that. All Right, I'm going
to bring you one of my absolute highlights of the night,
and no doubt a lot of other people's as well,
Selena Gomez in custom Ralph Lorenz. You know, a glittering
column gown is nothing new at the Oscars. We certainly
saw a lot of them this year, from Demi Moore
to Halle Berry Mindy Kayling and Emma Stone all wore
(06:53):
a version of like a silver or metallic column gown.
But I feel Selena's look really stood out because it felt.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
So right for her.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
She looked so comfortable and so radiant in this gown.
So she wore an off the shoulder Ralph Lurenz dress
embellished with thousands of tear drop crystals in this lattice effect,
which pulled into a liquid train at her feet. There
was a lot of craftsmanship to this gown. Her stylist,
Aaron Walsh was inspired by Sophia Lauren, which really comes
through in the look and the styling, and Sophia's Taylor
(07:25):
actually worked on this gown wow, among twelve other artisans
that worked on it. So yeah, that's a dress that's
had many hands touch it, and I really feel you
can see that. I've been so impressed with Selena this
Awards run. I thought that the Prada blue gown she
water the Golden Globes was like her high point, but
for me.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
This is just, yeah, she's really bringing it this year
more than any other year.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
I feel like, which I love for her because the
last couple of years she has been on a few
worst stress lists, people saying that she was too frumpy,
dressing older than she should. She also had a mishat
with her dress not sitting properly at an award show
a few years ago. So I feel like she takes
a beating, and this year everyone's kind of celebrating her style,
which is nice.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
We're on her side. I mean, everyone's always on Selena's side.
She's so charming and seems like such a lovely person,
and it's nice to see her receive the credit that
she deserves for her art but also for her style,
and this partnership with her stylist is really working for her.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Did you see Benny Blanco's.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Oh my God, I think I was too busy looking
at Selena Cape?
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Was that what it was like?
Speaker 1 (08:26):
I don't even know.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
I'm really bad explaining outfits, but evidently it's like he
kind of looked like Elvis Presley. Oh kind of, but
you're gonna look at the photo and be like, that's what.
And he wore like black ballet flats.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Yeah he did, but at least he was comfortable. He
doesn't look like Elvis. He looks like the Elvis impersonator
that's outside the Las Vegas strips and not even the
fancy yeah, like the knock off one who's handing out pamphlets.
But still he looked very comfortable and happy. Yeah, well
that's you know, that's half the game, right, comforting me.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
I'm glad she did that. Count Elvis.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Okay, cool, cool, Moving on, so let's talk about timoth Ay.
He's the Men's Web.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Nice they heard.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Oh, but I'm proud of him. Why you wear some color?
That boy took a risk, don't you think.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Every girl we've ever known?
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Oh my god, a yellow suit? I love that. Okay,
it's the look I've pulled out for discussion because yes,
he wore the photo and can't even look at the picture.
It's a leather suit. It's quite a leather Oh.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Yeah, EM's now grabbed the picture for those people listening
in horror and she just grabbed it from.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
But you can tell sweaty. Yeah, it'd be sweaty. And
the pants are quite tight as well. The pants are cut.
Let me just break it down. It's a butter yellow
leather suit. It's actually the first customs Javancy designed by
their new designer, Sarah Burton, which is quite cool. That
Timmy scored this for the Red Carpet. It's quite like
a casual vibe for the Oscars. I feel I think
(09:59):
he has like the riz to pull it off. But
what do you guys think? Didn't land for you?
Speaker 3 (10:04):
He does look like a little Telly Tubby in his outfit.
But when I say I'm proud of him.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Imagine always he's watching and he's sitting down.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Oh, that's why he hasn't moved all night. I've noticed
he didn't stand up as much as the other people's
because he can't. No, I was just proud of him
in like a weird way because normally when people theme
dressed through all their Oscars campaign, they dropped the ball
the actual Oscars and get too scared to catch. So
it's like Margot Robbie doing all her crazy, over the
top pink Barbie looks and then just wearing a very
like laid back classic black dress to the actual Wars.
(10:34):
That's usually what we see. But the fact that he
just stuck to his core and was like, I'm going
to look crazy at the Oscars.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Quite he doesn't be like not Bob Dylan.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
He's like he's too method. I would wear that.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
She has no.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
I looked it up yellow. I don't know if it's yellow.
I think historically Dylan has worn a bit of yellow
through his time, and maybe that was the not or
maybe he I think he did a song, the Joni
Mitchell song, Big Yellow Taxi. Perhaps that is the subtle Yeah, not.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Because he's not really nodding to Bob Dylan, and then
previously he's just being Bobby.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
He's actually so maybe now he's finally got it.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah, he wasn't doing the copy and paste Bob Dylan looks.
I actually think he looks more like Willy Wonka, an
underrated role for which he would not receive it right now.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
Look, he's eccentric. He wants to be great guys, he
wants to be memorable. We get it. But I have
to admit I kind of miss the longer hair and
the sexiest sleep dark looks he was wearing in his
previous red carpet era. I feel like it's gone this
far now we need to pull it back. I want
like the sexy raw like, yeah, okay, that's just that's
(11:41):
just and just got the ech over here. Finally, I
want to talk about Zoe Saldana. She won the Oscar
for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Amelia Perez.
She's wearing custom San Laurent by Anthony Vacarello. Because I
think we're going to have some feelings about this look.
San Laurent produced the film, so Zoe's been wearing the
(12:04):
brand throughout her awards run, notably only in black, so
people really wanted to see something else from her. Fine,
we got something different. Her gown had a netted bodice
with little jewels on the top and a teared bubble
hem in burgundy.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Satin.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Bubble hems are not an easy cell for anyone in
any context. I think we can all agree. But Zoe
is a fashion forward star, so I really didn't expect
her to do anything predictable. This look, I feel, will
be controversial because it doesn't necessarily look like the dress
that you get your Oscar in.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
Yeah, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
And then when we saw her on camera and the
crop of the shot where she was getting her Oscar,
you kind of just saw the top of the dress
and the top of the glove and it was giving
a bit like eighties vibes and I don't north and.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
Landed for me. Yeah, I didn't really like this dress?
Did you like it?
Speaker 2 (12:51):
No?
Speaker 3 (12:52):
I was a bit underwhelmed when I first saw it
in photos. So then I went to the videos because
I just think so many dresses they only look good
when you can see the movement of the person walking
down the red carpet. So I thought maybe I'd missed it.
But then I watched the videos and it still wasn't
landing for me, and I thought, maybe it's just too
high fashion for me. I'm a bit of a basic
girl sometimes, but I think the letdown was that Zoe
Sardana has been one of my favorite red carpet dresses
(13:14):
for like the last decade, and she's worn so much
better looks to the oscars. So I'm just I think
my favorite of all time is the dress you were
in twenty ten. It was Javann She it was similar.
It had a sparkly top and then it went down
to this big skirt of pomp poms, and people thought
it was so, you know, just.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Talking about directional steal a bit more appealing, so high fashion.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
That's I'm just like, oh, I know, obviously you can't
recycle address, but I was like, that's what you should
have won. Your Oscar.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
You can't recycle it all. Maybe not for your Oscar's moment,
but the reason why.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Or just stopping along those kind of lines when you've
seen her like so many times. She's been my best
dressed at award ceremonies for like the last ten years
at the least. I know she's been around longer than that,
and so it just felt a little underwhelming that when
she finally won her Oscar, it's not a good look.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Can I make one more point though? And I haven't
seen this anywhere. I don't know if it's a hot taker,
if it's just flat out wrong, I might be reaching here.
To me, it feels ever so slightly reminiscent of Halle
Berry's dress she won for her Best Actress Oscar. It
also had a netted bodice and it had swathes of
bird Saturday for the hem line. I wonder if this
was an intentional nod. I don't know. Again, I might
(14:18):
be reaching, but I just want to. I want to
be the first to say it in case it comes.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
I mean they're both trail breezers because Zoe is the
first person of a Dominican American domic yes to win
an Oscar and Halle Berry was the first African American
woman and so they both like have run on a
campaign of like being the first and kind of being trailblazers.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
So I mean, potentially it could be a subtle nod,
in which case I kind of.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
She's also just stunning and convince. I mean, she just.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Also her Oscar speed and I will talk about it tomorrow,
but yes, sent me over the edge. So even though
it's not the best, like my favorite dress, she still
looks beautiful.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Yeah, yeah, look, she is gorgeous. So those are my faves.
I've got so much more I could talk about out
of time.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
I thought that was so good.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
I learned so much. I'm assuming you'll be posting more
on your Instagram. I am absolutely will.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
I always do recaps for the audience, and we all
know the best go down at the Vanity Fair viewing
party and then the after party, So be sure that
I'll be recapping those two because I want to see
some real fashion come through. You know, no more of
this playing. It's safe, There's gonna be some looks.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
So yeah, we'll put a link to TAM's instagram in
our show notes. Make sure you go check out and
also join her broadcast channels because that's literally where I
got all my information.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Oh bless you, I see you lingering in there. Thank you, guys,
