Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good afternoon, Queen City. Good afternoon, Charlotte Hornets fans. It's
a winning Thursday in the Queen City. How about that
dub last night? We got to talk about it seven
oh four five, seven ninety six ten. Hit us up
on the FanDuel text line same number if you want
to give us a call and chat the old fashioned
way on x formerly Twitter at Kyle Bailey Club. It's

(00:43):
at Kyle Bailey Club. He's at Smoke Ludwig. We are
emanating live from the Chandler Voulta Studios, the Carolinas Personal
Injury Lawyers. One call, that's all go to Cvinjurylaw dot Com.
Busy Show Willie Peas Back in the four o'clock hour,
we'll talk about the season in for Charlotte DEPC. But
I am fascinated by this vote to as Smoke and

(01:04):
I discussed yesterday shift the MLS schedule and season to
align with the rest of global soccer and how that
might work. Oh and by the way, Apple TV is
no longer going to make you pay to watch MLS games.
All you need is just the Apple TV app. And
I don't know what that's a sign of, but I
do think it's a very good thing for fans. So
we'll get to all that with Willie Pe. We'll talk
some Panthers, some Hornets with him as well. D Orlando

(01:27):
Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, my guy, I called
him earlier today. He's excited to come on at five
twenty five to talk about Panthers and Falcons on Sunday.
The award winning beat reporter covering the Atlanta Falcons d
Orlando Ledbetter back in the five o'clock hour, but again
winning Thursday. Here on wfn Z. Last night inside Spectrum Center,

(01:48):
your Charlotte Hornets snapping a three game losing streak and
handling the Milwaukee Bucks one eleven to one hundred and Yeah,
Jannis Set he didn't play, But let's be honest, that's
not the story today.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
The story is what we might.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Be watching to start happen right in front of our eyes.
A young Hornets team, undermanned and shorthanded. No lamellow ball,
no Brandon Miller outworked and out toffed the Milwaukee Bucks,
which was cool. They out rebounded him by sixteen. They
hit twenty three of twenty seven from the free throw line.
They did it with poise and some chemistry and most importantly,

(02:22):
what appeared to be a real, live basketball plan. And
shout out to our guy, Walker Mayle, who was walking
down the hall out of the building after slaving away
behind a hot microphone for a couple of hours. Our
guy looked good last night in the all black suits.
So did a great job filling in for Terrence Oglesby.
But this young Hornets team, they got it done. And
I'll tell you what, for the first time in maybe
a while, looks like the Hornets might know what they're doing.

(02:44):
I'm trying not to get ahead of myself here, but
let's start with the game itself. Miles Bridges led the
way with twenty points. Steady veteran Knight attacked the rim,
got to the line. But how about Ryan Kalchbrenner, the
rookie center who's a proud new dad right life changing,
just got off to a great start in that game
and goes eight for eight from the field, seventeen points.

(03:05):
Nine boards and not just scoring but controlling the paint.
And he gave Charlotte the kind of size and presents
that we haven't seen there in years. And then there's
Konka Nipple sixteen points, another smooth night shooting. The jumper
hit big shots when the Bucks tried to rally, like
you can see the confidence in this kid. That's not
a new development. You can see why this front office

(03:26):
loved him before they drafted him. Colin Sexton, the young Bull,
sixteen points, eight assists, steady at the controls in the
absence of LaMelo ball. We haven't always had that around here,
certainly not in the five plus years of LaMelo ball,
but just in general, not a ton of point guard
depth and the kind of point guard depth like Colin
Sexton where he can step out on the floor in

(03:48):
the absence of your all star point guard and run
the show. Now, it hasn't always been perfect since Colin
got here, but it's also a smaller sample size of
eleven games. Last night was good. It's what they paid
him for, what they traded for. Rather Musad crashing the
glass like a man possessed thirteen rebounds eight offensive was
part of the scouting report, by the way, because he

(04:09):
had ten offensive rebounds against the Bucks last year. With
Doc Rivers coaching that team, they knew about it. Doc
warned them about it, told us about it after the game,
and he still did it to him anyway, So Mussa
got it done last night, and every time Milwaukee thought
about a comeback, Diabate or Kalkbrenner got a hand on
a miss. And let's not forget Miles Turner, the forever

(04:32):
evergreen trade Partners, you know, trade candidate for the Hornets,
dropped twenty one. Ryan Rollins had twenty five. But you know,
Charlotte never trailed again after taking the lead late in
the first quarter. They controlled this thing up nine at
the half, built the lead to nearly twenty in the
third quarter, and slammed the door in the fourth like
it was a grown man win from a team that's
barely old enough to runt a car. Right, So then

(04:55):
we got a zoom out some because the bigger story here,
I think is that there's a pattern or leon starting
to form. Like we're a month into the season. Basically,
these rookies can nipple and Kalkbrenner and seeon James and
even Leam McNeely. They're not just getting minutes. They are
producing when they're out there. They're playing meaningful and high
IQ basketball. They move the ball, they rebound, they defend,

(05:17):
they fit, They're unselfish, and I don't think that happens
by accident, and I don't think you do either. That's
I think Charles Lee system starting to take hold. I
hope it is. I hope that's what we're watching. I've
been wrong before. I've watched things in the past, be
it the Hornets of the Panthers and thought good things
are happening, we can see them, and then they turned

(05:37):
out to be fools gold So, but I think that's
what we're watching, is that the Charles Lee system is
starting to take hold with the players that they're getting
in here, that they, you know, really believe in. Disciplined, unselfish,
built on player development. Right, That's what Charles Lee wants
to be. It's what a lot of coaches and organizations say.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
They want to be.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
But you know, I think it's Charles Lee system starting
to take hold. It looks like Jeff pa Peterson's fingerprints
on this roster, finding four rookies who look like they
belong in the National Basketball Association, and it might be
ownership to like fingers crossed, you hope that it's ownership
to Rick Snall, Gabe Plotkin bringing in adults to run
a grown up basketball operation. That is what we were promised,

(06:18):
by the way when these new guys were brought here,
not just a grown up basketball operation, but the best
grown up basketball operation in the NBA at some point,
not right away, but at some point. So the vibe
is different. The decision seemed to make some sense, a
lot of sense in certain cases. The players compliment each other.
It feels coherent to me. That's not something we've said

(06:42):
often around here. Now look, look, because I know somebody's
going to accuse us or me, probably in particular, of
getting too carried away with what's going on here. All right,
nobody's planning a parade over a November win when Jannis
didn't play, all right, But the way that Charlotte handle business,
that's what you look for when you're trying to figure

(07:03):
out if something real is growing. The Hornets dominated the glass.
They were physical, they attacked, they made their free throws.
They didn't fold. When the Bucks made a mini run
or two, they responded, that was cool, that was fun
to watch. That looks like the beginning of culture. That
looks like the production of habits, that looks like coaching,
and that looks like a front office that seems to

(07:25):
finally be aligned from top to bottom. And again, we've
seen a lot of false starts over the years, new
general managers, new coaches, new eras another new coach, it
was the same coach that never quite took hold. But
this one could be different. I hope it's different. Felt
different last night. Like you can see Charles Lee, I
think building something a system that doesn't just rely on

(07:47):
LaMelo ball, highlights or anything like that. It's structure, it's toughness,
it's accountability. And you can see Jeff Peterson drafting players
that seemed to fit the vision, high motor, high character,
high IQ team first guys like you can feel that
this might be a real rebuild. So I would say
Hornets fans enjoy it, like I didn't think that, you know,

(08:08):
I didn't think that they would win the game last night.
To be honest with you, I thought they'd compete, but
I wasn't really sure they'd win the game. So I'd say,
enjoy it. Three game losing streak snapped. The rookie class
is looking more polished all the time. And uh front
office and a coaching staff that you know, if you
need to whisper it, go ahead, I'd actually know what
they're doing. Maybe, I hope, So, I hope. So your

(08:29):
thoughts seven oh four or five, seven oh ninety six
to ten hit us up on the FanDuel text line,
and the rematch, by the way, smoke Friday night tomorrow
night in Milwaukee, and Giannis is expected back. So that'll
be the real test. And it's always a test for everybody.
But last night, wrote to me, wasn't really about who
wasn't on the floor. It was about who was Kalkbrenner,
Ca Nipplesyon, James Leam McNeely. You know this new generation

(08:49):
of Hornets that might be able to lead them into
something more fun and more successful.

Speaker 4 (08:52):
Well that and it wasn't the most efficient shooting night
for iver team for the most part, Like it wasn't
a hot shooting night.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
And the fact that you these young guys.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
That were able to grime this one out and just
get it through the muck and win the game at
home when there was multiple occasions like late in that
first half. I remember Eric Collins pointing out that, like,
they're in the same exact situation essentially against the Lakers
on Monday, and Luka Doncic just tore all over them
late in the first half. You know, could have had

(09:21):
a similar situation with Miles Serger or some of the
other Bucks players to do that to you.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
They didn't allow that to happen. Now, part of it.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Has to do with one of the best ec calls
of the year, if not the best.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
Chicken salad with some curry sauce.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
Thankfully a trade man hit that shot, and I think
that really gave a boost to the Hornets. But I
think looking at this they didn't win into prettiest fashion,
and I like that.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
It's like, hey, we can win this way.

Speaker 4 (09:46):
How many times have we been able to say over
the last ten years, Yeah, the Hornets can win this
way in an ugly type of fashion, maybe not the
most pretty efficient night.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
I think that's pretty big too.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
You look at ESPN dot com, they have their rookie
rankings for the first ten games.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Hornets are into top ten.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Three Hornets into top ten, and the rookie rankings and
the one that really just made me flabbergasted. Yesterday was
when they I think it was Walker mel On the
broadcast said they have not been out rebounded this year.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
That's we talked about that yesterday. Who do we talk
about that with? Somebody else brought that up? You might
have mentioned an a Hornets pregames.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
I think I might have.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
But either way, they're very high up in some very
key stats which are indicators that what Charles is teaching
is taking hold, what Charles is demanding is taking hold.
So yeah, that's a good point to make there as well.
I did want to throw out there. You know, my
kids said to me this morning, what everybody got up early?

(10:41):
Their little kids, they get up early. Dad wanted to
turn on Sports Center, and when I turned their little
kids they don't understand. So I turned on Sports Center
and there's Jameis Winston right practicing with the Giants. Now
that excites me to see that, And then I got
to see him joke about the Hamilton thing in the
press conference yesterday. We will, I'm sure, but my kids
were deeply disappointed. They Saidaddy, we don't want to watch football.

(11:02):
I said, well, it's sports, and then I just I'm
not gonna explain what Sports Center is. I said, what
do you want to watch? And my oldest daughter said,
I want to watch the Hornets. I love the Hornets.
And I thought, oh, that would make Smoke cry if
you heard that coming from a four year old, Daddy,
I want to there's.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Gonna be a torture, tew, but we love you.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
It's like, you know, Matty girl, that's a good morning
to say I love the Hornets. She was very upset
to see Jameis Winston on the TV. She wanted to
see the Hornets because she loves the Hornets. And my
first thought was that would bring a tear to Smoke's
eye if you heard my four year old daughter say
after last night's whin, Daddy, I love the Hornets.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
I want to watch the Hornets some more. Well, and
if you love the Hornets, Kyle, you have a chance
to see him this Saturday. Oh look at that segue.
Yes exactly, because we're giving away a family four pack
to this Saturday's game when they take on the Oklahoma
City funder, who, by the way, blew out the Lakers
last night.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
Oh my gosh, yep.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
All you have to do is text the word Champschamps
Champs two to fandul text line, and you'll enter yourself
a chance to win a family four pac to see
the Hornets hopefully, LaMelo Ball and Con Kinnippill take on
the defending NBA champions led by Shay Gildas Alexander.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
So we're giving away Hornets tickets and the keyword is champs.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Well, you're taking on the defending champs. Okay, okay, I
like it, and who knows to beat a man, you
gotta beat the man.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
I didn't know if we were doing that or if
we were still playing office. The reason I asked is
are we still playing off the Summer League champs too?
I didn't know if that was the thing that we
were still doing.

Speaker 4 (12:25):
To go either way, like we used to see back
in the old Greensboro Coliseum, Day's Champion versus Champion, The
world television champion takes on the NWA's World Heavyweight Champion.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
You know what that also made me think of, did
you have any Did you ever really spend any time
in Champs sporting goods in the mall?

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Yes you did.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
Did you like Champs? Okay, it's a dumb question. If
you were a kid that liked sports. You like Champs,
But was that the goat of all mall sporting goods stores?

Speaker 4 (12:51):
It was up there. I mean, there was nothing that
made me go like, oh my gosh. Plus my fam
my dad was more. He went to Dick Sporting Goods
a lot more. That would be our place that we'd
shop at un or was it really a Champs near
near our house? So we just usually went to Dick
Sporting Goods.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yeah, but you're also twelve years younger than me or roughly,
and I feel like Dick Sporting Goods didn't really come
onto the scene for me until I was like a
late teenager. Maybe that was literally two thousands, is that right,
that's early two thousands, So exactly there were no Dick
Sporting Goods growing up. This might not be a question
that's appropriate for your age range or for you you
gen xers on this, because like, Champs was the It

(13:29):
was a big deal when I was a kid growing up. Like,
if you wanted to go get cool sports gear at
the mall, Champs was kind of it.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Now, what was the place that sold the Maulberry shoes?

Speaker 5 (13:38):
The mall?

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Bey oh Marbury? Like Stephan Barberry? Okay, I was thinking
malls and I thought you said Maulberry.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
Walmart.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
No, it was like some it had an exclusive deal
to where you could get the Maulberry and they were
like fifteen dollars. Really yeah, And it was a place
and gas. It was a place in Gastoni we went
to all the time because it was very cheap and
very stephen Berry's.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
Yes, stephen Berry's that's the one. Yeah, stephen Berry's. Did
they go out of business, Yeah, unfortunately they did. Okay,
that was a great place though. Man oo, somebody said
Sports Authority was the goat too.

Speaker 6 (14:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Yeah, yeah, that's a good one. That's a really foot
locker though.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
See.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
That's the thing is that foot locker House of Hoops
that was from seven oh four, just a second ago.
Foot locker House of Hoops. Foot locker was a really
big deal. Foot What was the other one? Not foot
act was a foot room shoes, No, not rack room.
We're talking about cool mall sports where you went to
go buy your Jordan's at the mall.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
Man, there's these hat places. I used to go to
a lot too, and that the Hickory mall finish line.
That's what I I couldn't think of It finish line.
And I know I should have known that because I
bought a pair of Jordan's there just like eight months ago.
But like foot Locker Finish Line Champs, am I missing
one of the all time goat mall sporting goods stores.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
I feel like I'm missing one. Somebody said Modell's. I
feel like that's an Upper Midwest thing, though, isn't it.
I don't recall ever having a Modell's south of the
Mason Dixon line. I never saw him growing up. Foot
Locker Finish Line, Champs sport Goods, those are good. And
then somebody confirmed for me on the text line what
I thought a second ago. Somebody said, yeah, Dick Sporting
Goods just got hot like ten years ago. That's maybe

(15:09):
a little longer than ten years.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
I'm just gonna say, because we went to the Dick
Sporting Goods in Hickory so many times, it.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
Can't be longer than fifteen years. Like Dix didn't really
blow up blow up until the last fifteen years.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
I think you're wrong. I think it was twenty five
years ago.

Speaker 4 (15:23):
You sure, yeah, because we went When we went to
the Dick Sporting Goods in Hickory, it was like two
thousand and three, two thousand and four.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
So that's twenty two years ago, okay.

Speaker 4 (15:31):
And then when Moresville built the Target which was about
to the Target shopping Center, which was about twenty years ago, Dix.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
Was my Target shopping center. Yes, cool, I was built
like twenty years ago, by the way. Okay, to let
you know, Oh, Hibbins Sports, Oh yes, that's the one. Yes,
I knew I was forgetting one. People are texting it
Hibbitt Sports, whoever you are, thank you for sending that in.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
Are they still round?

Speaker 2 (15:52):
I don't know, but hibben Sports was the one that
I could not think of. That was our like, that
was my og that in chance for the og mall
sporting goods stores that we always went to grown ups.
Hibbit Sports is the one that I could not think of.
Thank you to all of you who texted in Hibbitt Sports.
You just the relief off my shoulders is enormous, all right,
seven four five, seven ninety six ten hit us up

(16:13):
on the FanDuel text line. Somehow we got onto the
mount Rushmore of sporting good stores. I don't regret a thing.
We'll come back. We'll keep talking about it all Sports
Radio ninety two seven, wfn Z Sports Radio ninety two

(16:36):
seven w f n Z KB and smoke with you
here on a Thursday afternoon wide open three o'clock hour.
Willie P's back at four twenty five, and I did
chuckle right there. Who does the best willip at the station?
Who does the best impression? I think it might be Flounder.
I think I think Flounder's got the best willip in
the building.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
The thing is, we all have a willipe.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Everybody's got a willip, just like everybody used to have
a hitman. Shout out of Jacamo. Everybody, come on, shout
out to it man.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
Yeah, I was gonna say, we all have I Mac
has one max to probably the roughest because he can't
reach the high notes so his voice cracks. Yeah, I
honestly think it's either Flounder or Fiddy that has the
best one.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
I think it's flound I think like flound has produced
some of those broadcasts. I know you have too, but
I feel like, as they're both Mets fans, they always
argue about I just feel like flound is always enough
in the proximity of Willie P. That he has honed
the Willie p impersonation. I think Flownd's got the best
at the station.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
And by the way, we're gonna be talking about the
Bret Bronnaco deal.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
Baby yeah, thick Dog said, I always have to Willy P.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
That's good.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
I don't know has anybody made that joke before? I know,
has anybody made that joke? And he follows up with
get it, Willie really pe, I don't think anybody, David
not a Duke fan. I have to Willie P. Now,
all of us, where has that joke been this entire time?
How was that? I must have missed it. There's no
way that no one's made that joke before. That's the

(18:13):
first time that I'm saying it ever. On the text line,
I got to be honest. Close as we got was
with Jonathan.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
Whenever he would fill in for you, Jonathan would immediately
text in a great Willy PP's in today?

Speaker 2 (18:23):
Oh god, Yeah, they do like they do have a
pretty ugly rivalry. Gonna not gonna lie on that. Seven
O four five seven ninety six ten hit us up
on the FanDuel text line, the jokes keep coming. I
do feel good about the Hornets win last night. I
don't want to get carried away and overboard, because as
I was talking about what we saw last night, Richie

(18:45):
hitting me on the FanDuel text line and was like, hey, KB,
didn't we feel the same way or didn't you say
some of this some of these same things about the
Panthers after the Green Bay win, And I was like, yeah,
kind of. But I was also more playing off of
Dave Canallis's postgame locker room speech, telling the guys like,
just dream with me a little bit.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
Just dream with me.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
We can walk out of this iconic venue with a
massive win over one of the most well known organizations
and teams in all of the world, and then we
can go take a hot, steaming dump on our own
field seven days from now against one of the worst
teams in the end. I'm kidding Dave, but that's what
they did. But no, I was more playing off of,
you know, Dave, just dream with me a little bit.
I don't think the dream entailed losing to the one

(19:24):
and eight Saints at home, but that's what happened. And
so yes, I'm very hesitant, probably not as much as
those who've been watching this for thirty years, but you know,
pretty close at this point to understanding that you can't
get too high or too low. You can get too
low sometimes, but you can't get too high on the
hornets because you know they're probably going to bring you
back down to earth at some point. But I do

(19:45):
like this particular foundation. I think that they've laid out
in front of us. kN K Nipple looks awesome. Ryan Kalchbrenner.
I had some doubts, but I liked him. I didn't
know if he could ever be a starting center in
the NBA, but now I think he can. On I
think there's still room for him to grow. He's a
smart player. He defends the rim well, he takes smart shots.

(20:06):
I loved his response, by the way, last night when
somebody asked him about himposing his will on the game,
and he was like, I don't know if impose my will,
but I just.

Speaker 3 (20:13):
Take easy shots.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
It's like, ye, yes, yes, but you also made them
all and you get those easy shots because you're a
smart basketball player, so no, your strengths and he knows
the streams right now, Yes, because I think he did
cheot a little bit, if I remember correctly, from Grayton
behind the arc, he's only had one shot, and I
was against a shot clock from behind the arc. It's like,
right now, he's like, dude, I just I'm close to basket.

(20:34):
I get you some put back dunks, get you some
lay ins, gets you some hook shots. If I'm around
a basket, I feel pretty comfortable right now. And I
think that's a good mindset to have if you're Ryan Kackprinner.
But then again, he's like a twenty three year old rookie,
so I think he kind of gets it. Yeah, No,
I do too. I mean Seon James carries himself like
a grown man like athletically, professionally, he's been a better
player than I think most people thought he'd be already.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
So that's great.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Leam mcneely's gotten fewer minutes, but he shot the ball
pretty well. I got to revisit the numbers, but shot
the ball better as of late. So there's some good
stuff out there. There's some fun stuff out there to watch.
But as it relates to the Panthers, Fund zero Expectations said,
so we should only play teams from Wisconsin.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
It feels that way today, But this Atlanta game on Sunday,
I do want to pivot to that for a second,
feels like we're putting a lot on this game, and
I really want to fight the urge to do that.
Don't get me wrong, they're all big. It's because they're
all big. This is the very nature of the NFL
that makes us and keeps us talking this way about

(21:34):
these games. God, it's just such a massive game for
Bryce's future with the pay, such a massive game. I mean,
if we fall back to under five hundred, I'd imagine
the Sun's probably going to explode and we're all gonna
melt and die on Sunday. Right, It's kind of that
feeling from some people, like, man, if they don't win
this game, civil war will break out across America and

(21:56):
all of our homes will combust into flames, and our
dog will run away from our families and we'll never
see them again. So I joke, but it is big,
Like they're all big, and I do think for out
of all the people we talk about, it is the
biggest for Bryce Young, Like, you can't go out there
and suck on Sunday the way that you suck this

(22:17):
past Sunday against the Saints.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
Simply can't do it.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Now, he might be in a you know, a prime
spot relative to other quarterbacks, and that there's really nobody
behind him that they want to see for the future.
They don't want to see Andy Dalton for the future.
They don't want to see Mike White for the future.
So Bryce, in theory, should get all seven games to
leave no doubt one way or the other. But I
don't know, Smoke, how do you feel? Because I'm listening

(22:40):
to Mack and Bone this morning, and like they're talking
about what a mess, and they're not wrong to talk
about it in those terms, but like, I really want
to fight the urge to put everything in all the
things on one game in Atlanta on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (22:52):
Yeah, I get that, And you don't want to put
all the eggs in one basket, just like you maybe
shouldn't have put as much credence into the Packers game.
And now look at the Packers right now after they
lost to the Eagles. There's serious conversations about Matt Lafleor's
you know in Green Bay fraud. He never was a
good play caller handed a quarterback and just organization and

(23:14):
all that stuff. Yeah, you know, failing dimension that they
fail Dimension miss make the playoffs. The two years prior
that he got there. I think part of it has
to do with the fact that this team is so
up and down. It's a true roller coaster team right now,
right and it's been seven years since this team has
really been truly competitives.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
Eight years.

Speaker 4 (23:34):
Honestly, I think that's part of why we're saying almost
every single game is a must win and this is
an indictment on Bryce Young in his future and indic
middle and you know, Dave Canalis and what does this show.
I do think, though we can't put as much, do
I think this game is big?

Speaker 3 (23:49):
Absolutely?

Speaker 4 (23:50):
Yeah, because if you win this game, you get back
up to above five hundred year three and one, and
you respond well to a loss, and then you look
at the rest of the schedule. You got a game
against San fran on Monday night on the road, saying
Fran even though they had been injured a hell and back,
had been really good. You have the Rams after that.
Rams have been one of the best teams in the NFC.
And then coming off the buy, you know, you just

(24:12):
lost to the Saints and now you have to play
him inside the super Dome, and then you end the
season with two games against the Bucks, who have been
the Krim to La Crim in the NFC south Over
in this decade, and the Seattle Seahawks, who have arguably
been one of the best teams in the NFL too.
So the schedule is not any easier. You're going through
the hardest stretch. You have one of the hardest schedules
remaining in the NFL. So I think that's where it's coming.

(24:32):
That's where that I agree with. I agree with that,
I do.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
But like at five and five with seven games to go, like,
could they lose all seven?

Speaker 3 (24:43):
Yeah? Yeah, I mean we see happen.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
So I'm saying, like, yeah, so could they lose all seven, Yes,
yes they could. Could they win all seven? Probably not,
that's probably not gonna happen. Could they go four and three? Yeah,
I think they could. I think they could go four
and three. I think they could go two and five.
Like I, we all understand. There are plenty of things,
plenty of ways that this could go their final seven games.

(25:07):
So I don't want to put too much on Atlanta,
but I'll go with you on that. Niners on the
road Monday night the following week, and then the Rams
come to town. And so if the team's left on
their schedule Falcons, Niners, Rams, Saints, Bucks, Seahawks, Bucks. The
only team I don't think they can beat is the Rams.

(25:29):
And even that, I mean it's the NFL, so technically
everything's possible. But the only team that I don't think
they can beat is the Rams, even at home, because
I think the Rams are the best team in the
NFL right now. Not bad for a team that filter
quarterback was dead literally right considering he wasn't practicing. Uh yeah,
And I'll honestly, Kyle, I'm kind of thinking I'm not

(25:49):
fully convinced on Sunday's game just because it's the Falcons.

Speaker 3 (25:53):
They've not been well on the road and this Falcons
team is chuckling.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
Hide And like I said earlier, this game is going
to be a real life face off game because you
don't know which one's John Tavolton, you don't know which
one's Nicholas Cage.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Tell me what I'm telling lies. I love the fact
that you make face off references. It's a great movie,
John Wu.

Speaker 4 (26:09):
Shout out to John Wu anyway, But I honestly think
Carolina wins the next two games.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
I'm sorry, what almost choked in my coffee.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
You think they're winning two in a row, yep, I
think they beat it Landa. Do you think they're winning
on a Monday night in San Francisco. I'm a super
Perty's gonna be back for that one.

Speaker 4 (26:29):
We think, yeah, they're injured, to hell them back. Some
of these games are gonna get to him. Okay, And
I also think too, I don't really fear no winning.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
Back to back road games.

Speaker 4 (26:41):
Yes, I'm plus. Look at Carolina's record against San Fran
Elder Road. Carolina has notoriously done well no matter who's
in there, to beat San Fran. Nineteen ninety six, no
one gave them a nineteen ninety five, they were an
expansion team going against the defending Super Bowl champs. Even
though they didn't have Steve Young, they should have beat him.
Elvis Kurbach Tim mcchaire had a ninety five yard pick

(27:03):
six to win that game. Nineteen ninety six, no one
gave them a shot, even though they already beat San
Fran earlier in the year, because it was in San
fraan battle for the NFC West. They went in a
shootout with Carrie Collins. You don't usually win shootouts with
carry Collins. Okay, in nineteen ninety nine, George Seaford was
two to one against the Niners in San Francisco the
last time they lost in Candlestick Park. Who was it

(27:25):
against Carolina in a game just like that game against Green.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
Bay two weeks ago.

Speaker 4 (27:31):
Wow, So you tell me that they have a winning
record against San fran on the road in Candlestick and
Levi Stadium combined.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
When do you combine them?

Speaker 2 (27:40):
Call me crazy, different Carolinas, different general managers, different.

Speaker 4 (27:43):
Generations, but yet it keeps on happening. It's an evergreen statement. Okay,
Carolina does well against San Fran.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
Bro Charisma, the Supreme said, I agree with Smoke seven
oh four. Tyler said, just because Smoke said it, I'm
betting on them.

Speaker 3 (27:58):
Don't do that.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
But like, oh, you're not confide it now. Well, I'm
not a betting get expert. Okay, okay, all right, So,
but I'm just saying it usually happens. It's cyclical, man.
Time is a flat circle.

Speaker 3 (28:08):
That's true. Time is a flat sir. Things are gonna
happen that usually happened.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
Carolina, for for whatever reason, always does well, usually when
they play in San Francisco.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
Wes Bryan's gonna box your ears. Let's see Texters blowing
us up here. Seven oz foot number has offered to
buy you a steak if they win to in a row.
Jack just said, smoke, chill, bro, chill, bro. Angry Panthers
fan thinks you're smoking the devil's lettuce. Weather Man Mark
says you're smoking something good.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
He's not. I will attest to that. I don't smoke.
That's the most part about my nickname.

Speaker 2 (28:42):
Two seven six numbers saying getting that worked up over
an awful Carolina Panthers team. Lol two games in a row,
l ol ololol.

Speaker 4 (28:50):
Well, I mean it's not the most worked up, a
bit of a bad football team. How many times over
the years have I complained about Western Carolina football?

Speaker 3 (28:55):
Cow plenty? Yeah, that they're actually good. They need to
win out to but let's be fair.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
Two seven to six from the Mountains of VA, I
know that area code. What makes you think, like, why
is Carolina awful? Because right now they're middle of a
pack and despite that embarrassing loss, they're still on the
end the hunt of the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (29:13):
Graphics we saw him yesterday. Yeah, so I.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
Don't think we can call them awful. I think we
can call them awful the last time we saw them,
But you can't call a five and five team awful
for ten weeks and you can do whatever you want
to do.

Speaker 3 (29:25):
It's a free country. But I think you're wrong about that. Look,
I get it.

Speaker 4 (29:27):
Last time they lost that they played in San Fran
they got their butts kicked with Kyle Owen on National
tight End Day. That's I think when we had Sam
Rose and thinking the flag was a hot dog rapper
or it was Dick Stock and one of the two.
But before that, you know, the last time Carolina lost
in San Fran two thousand and one. Oh wow, Yeah, okay,
Carolina does well against San Fran. Man even in twenty ten,

(29:50):
what was one of their two wins against San Fran.
I was at that game, Matt Moore, you know, put
it up there for David Guennis, And.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
If you think about it, san Fran was the game
and they got Matt Ruhle fired and we can count
that as a win.

Speaker 3 (30:02):
Yeah. So I'm just saying, look, Carolina does well against
san Fran historically. Let smoke cook.

Speaker 2 (30:09):
I love I love how you went back to the
ninety five season to make your point when you were
negative four years old, negative two I'm sorry, negative two
years old.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
You were negative too well.

Speaker 4 (30:20):
I mean that Tim mkaire records stood until twenty twenty three.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
How many Panthers sickos would sign up to watch the
entire nineteen ninety five season with Smoke at the WFNZ Doghouse.

Speaker 3 (30:30):
I have eight games I need to itierate.

Speaker 4 (30:32):
Let's see, I need the Falcons game at Clemson, which
was a shoot out between Carrie Collins and Jeff George
hold On.

Speaker 2 (30:38):
I don't need the rundown, right, I need to first win, man,
I need first win. Take it up with Hoggard, our
director of research. But I would love to know.

Speaker 4 (30:45):
I'm taking it up with Bank of America Stadium because
I know they have those games somewhere.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
Because I was just talking to our boss, you know, Marsha,
a couple of minutes ago, and we got some things
playing for twenty twenty six at the doghouse, and now
I'm thinking we should do like a weekly blast from
the past, come watch a game, you know, an old
season with smoke starting with nineteen ninety five, and we'd
have to do it at the doghouse. How many of
the Panthers sickos would sign up for that Once a week,

(31:10):
come drink some beers with smoke and watch a game
from the nineteen ninety five season, and then we'll just
get We'll just keep rolling every week. Drink you know,
we'll get you an oduels man. We'll get you a
non alcoholic beer. Seven oh four five, seven oh ninety
six ten. Hit us up on the FanDuel text line
right now, we go to smoke on the headlines.

Speaker 3 (31:27):
Who is smoke? Where is smoke? Where there's smoke, there's fire.
Let's go. We got people signing up on the text line,
so they'll come.

Speaker 6 (31:36):
All right.

Speaker 4 (31:36):

report is officially out for today's practice. The best news

(31:59):
Derek Brown full participant. Just like Dave Canalis was expecting yesterday.
You're just trying to be careful, he's a little nicked up.
Rico Daldle with his quad was a limited participant. Bryceon
Tremaine with his hit full participant. Unfortunately, Trevin Wallace shoulder
did not participate in practice, but Chandler Zavalla was a
full participant. The only other guy that didn't practice today

(32:20):
was Lafe and Ransom with a hand injury.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
He had surgery too, didn't he. Yes, I at least
small procedure. I know they were hopefully could play on Sunday,
but that sounds like fifty to fifty at best.

Speaker 4 (32:29):
All right, And since you were talking about Matt Rule earlier,
I want to mention one of the old schools he
was coaching at. They got another scandal, Baby Baylor scandal. Yes,
new allegations surfacing this week regarding Baylor ad mac Rhodes
are related to a violation of the faith based university's
policies and practices. According to Ross Daling Gervraw Yahoo Sports,

(32:50):
Baylor is declining comment as this involves a quote unquote
personal matter in an ongoing investigation. So Baylor's good for
these at least once a decade hopefully.

Speaker 2 (33:01):
Yeah, but hold on head to head, who's got the
most all time programmer university scandals, Baylor or Michigan State.

Speaker 4 (33:09):
Speaking of that, Michigan State just vacated alder wins from
twenty twenty two to twenty twenty four for three ineligible players.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Holy crap, I'd forgotten about that when I asked, And
that means Jonathan Smith now has zero Big ten wins.
Good Lord, we'll come back. Hold on, hold that thought.
We can't keep going. We got to hit a break.
We'll come back. We'll take more of your thoughts. By God,
I walked straight into it. Sports Radio ninety two to

KB and Smoke on a Thursday, wide open, three o'clock hour.

Speaker 3 (33:55):
This is fun to do.

Speaker 2 (33:55):
Sometimes we often have a three forty five guest, but
this is me and Smoke hang it out today on
a Thursday. We do have the best audio in sports though.
Here in about fifteen minutes, Willie P. Will Pelociic, voice
of Charlotte FC, WFNZ postgame host for the Panthers and Hornets.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
He's back at for twenty five.

Speaker 2 (34:12):
He's not often on the show or the rather the
station twice in one day, but I wanted to get
him in. He had to kind of throw his week
into a different schedule because of exit interviews and the
unfortunate into their season, so wanted to get him back
on this afternoon and talk a bit about that. But
also the larger soccer news MLS news with the schedule
and the season changing potentially and Apple TV no longer

(34:34):
forcing fans to pay an extra subscription fee to watch
their product. Now you can just pay the regular ten
dollars a month or whatever it is for Apple TV,
and you get the soccer games. How about that. I
think that's probably a wise decision from Major League Soccer.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
Yeah, it's better late than never, and honestly should have
never been thought of, but it's good to have that. Plus,
you know, I don't have Apple TV, but I know
we're able to watch and listen to Willy pl on
the broadcast. But Apple TV has a lot of stuff
going forward from what I've heard.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
Oh, I love that TV, dude.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
I think their original shows are phenomenal, like the best
original shows out there from any streaming service. Yeah, I've
been a big They're not all bangers, but like they've produced,
I'd say they were at about a sixty or seventy
percent hit rate based on what I've seen so far.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Are you take that ten times out of tennis?

Speaker 6 (35:21):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (35:21):
Yeah, them in Paramount, I think have leaped to the
top of like original content programming, I mean, And maybe
Paramount's not for everybody. Like I'm pretty much your typical dude,
you know, I like action movies and beautiful women and
don't tell my wife I said that. But I'm just
a guy, you know what I mean? And like I
like the Taylor Sheridan universe. I like all the Yellowstones

(35:41):
and the you know, eighteen eighty threes and things like that,
but also the Jeremy Renter know, Mayor of Kingstown and
mob Land like that. Paramount just crushes it with the
con like for dudes, especially, Paramount Content's phenomenal, just fantastic.
All right, phones, ringing texts are coming in seven oh
four or five, seven ninety six to ten Hit us up.
We talked about the Hornets big win last night. Talked

(36:02):
about how much pressure is on Carolina Sunday at Atlanta
to not only beat them for a second time, but
you know, play better offensively than they did this past
weekend against the Saints. And we're taking your phone calls.
Let's go to Panther Bow who's chiming in from the
Great State of Texas.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
Bo, what's going on, Buddy Gray?

Speaker 6 (36:21):
KB doing well?

Speaker 2 (36:22):
Hope you are, Yes, sir, So, I was driving down
the road earlier and saw on Indiana Hoosier's license plate
and thought of you. Yes, I know, I know what
I said there. I know what I said there that
I still thought of you.

Speaker 6 (36:35):
Well, hey, I you know, I don't want to be
mister Gotti gripe with the Hoosiers. I mean it's I
was talking to my dad. We were saying, you know what,
it's good to see some of these teams and never win.
It's good to see them have a nice little moment,
humble some of these other fan bases out there, so
good for who's your Bobby where? You know? Well, we'll
see how this all shakes out. That doesn't mean that
Mendoz has wrapped up the heisman. I think that he

(36:55):
was kind of a little shaky there until he started
to have a nice drive at the end.

Speaker 3 (36:58):
But this is this is the Indiana content. Is my fault.
What did you actually call in for?

Speaker 6 (37:03):
I apologize, Well, I just wanted to, you know, reiterate
with everyone else, like say, and I am out on
Bridon and I just I thought the season was over
and no I'm not. And and by the way, for
all like whatever happens, just enjoying the ride and just
it's like everybody acts like they're getting paid to give
their takes, you know what I mean, like I can
understand what the take Like Mac like, hey, you know, what,

(37:25):
what do you think of Conkin nipple. It's like, yeah,
I don't think he's gonna be that good or I
don't think he's gonna be like comes back to bite
him really bad here. But it's like he's getting paid,
you know, had that and it's okay, but for our
entire fan base not to just be like it's like
the season continues and everyone's just oh, he's got a
small arm, he's got small hands, he's got smallness. And
it's like over five and five and games, Vegas only

(37:46):
said what they're gonna win six and a half games?
I mean, I just don't get it sometimes where it's
like people grow up in a household where you know
their their parents or the priest or whatever was like,
now shall make a prediction and THO shall try to
be right and blame the neighbors when they think they're wrong,
and it's all about being right. I just don't get it.
I don't get any of it.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
I actually agree with a lot of what you just
said there, Like I get paid to espouse opinions every day,
but if you go back and listen to me on
Sunday or Monday show, I was very upset with the
way that Bryce played. I said a million times that
he sucked and that it was hard to defend that.
I said a lot of things, but I also didn't
say that I was out and quit on the season,
because what choice. You're right, there's seven games left to go.
We don't know what they're gonna do. Like we know

(38:28):
how we after we after they lost to Buffalo, Like
there were people tweeting at me. One guy in particular was.

Speaker 3 (38:34):
Like, you're a liar.

Speaker 2 (38:34):
You lied to your audience, you made them believe they
could win this game. You're the lyingest liar whoever lived.
And then they turn around and beat the Packers on
the road, and just week to week, we don't know
what this team's gonna do.

Speaker 3 (38:44):
They're better than last year. I know that.

Speaker 6 (38:47):
There is developmental football team. They're young. I mean, DJ
Janson's the old guy besides that. But yeah, man, we'll
see what happens. I enjoy it. It's a bumpy ride,
it's a roller coaster, but it's so fun. I'll still
be lock time.

Speaker 2 (38:57):
I'm with you, buddy. I'm not gonna thank you for
the phone call. I'm not gonna high for football season
all week, all year long. Uh when during the offseason,
then get to five and five through ten weeks and
be like, it's not worth it to do this anymore.
What's Life's not even worth living. Let's just pull the
plug on the radio station and burn down Bank of
America Stadium. I mean, I know it's maybe turn the
Panthers into a competitive cheerleading squad. I mean, it's probably

(39:18):
not going to work out for you this year in
the end. But prime example, look at your Hokies.

Speaker 4 (39:22):
They could have easily got well, no, they could have
easily given up and just road to season out when
they fired Brent Pry. But there's still an outside shot
they get stop it.

Speaker 3 (39:33):
There's only one thing that matters, beating Virginia, that's it.

Speaker 4 (39:36):
But still, you guys have won what three or four
games since then, You've been around five hundred. You could
easily just given up at this point. His team didn't
give up. Yeah, I think that deserves no guts.

Speaker 3 (39:47):
You're not wrong.

Speaker 2 (39:47):
I know where you're going with this, but like you,
of all the motivational examples you could, Hey, look at
your Hokies who were still sub five hundred and just
waiting out the end of the Montgomery era to hire
a new coach. It's so inspiring. I'm tearing up when
one for the Montgomery come on, just doesn't have the
same beat, Virginia. Let's go to NASCAR.

Speaker 3 (40:07):
Brad. Next on the phones, Brad, what's going on?

Speaker 5 (40:10):
Hey, what's going on?

Speaker 7 (40:10):
Guys?

Speaker 5 (40:11):
How you doing?

Speaker 3 (40:11):
Good man? What's what's on your mind?

Speaker 5 (40:13):
Appreciate taking my call. My Sunday is kind of boring
this time of year.

Speaker 7 (40:17):
I'm sure Smoke can relate without NASCAR.

Speaker 5 (40:19):
But that's okay. I am not out on Bryce as
far as that goes. I was actually at.

Speaker 7 (40:25):
The game Sunday, and the only thing I don't I
don't understand why they didn't run with Tuba a little more.

Speaker 5 (40:32):
I mean, it clearly wasn't working. I don't know if that.

Speaker 7 (40:34):
Would have made a difference or not. Obviously, I mean
maybe not, But I mean, what do.

Speaker 5 (40:38):
You get three carries?

Speaker 7 (40:40):
I mean, I just don't understand why they don't even.

Speaker 5 (40:42):
It out a little more with those two guys.

Speaker 7 (40:43):
I know Rico's the better back right now, but it
wasn't working with him Sunday.

Speaker 5 (40:48):
So why didn't they you know what I mean? They
could have at least tried.

Speaker 7 (40:50):
I don't think it would I don't think they didn't
give it to Tuba more.

Speaker 3 (40:53):
Because I don't think it. I think it. I don't
think it would have mattered.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
Now, I understand your point, but you could look out
there and at some point you see, oh the Saints
are going to do everything they can to stay whoever
we're running, and forced Bryce to throw the football, you
know what I mean, Like understand where you're coming from.
But the Saint said, no, it doesn't matter. We're going
to make Bryce be this with his arm and he
didn't do it.

Speaker 5 (41:10):
Yeah that's true. Yeah, one more quick thing, guys. I
am actually I don't know if you guys feel this way,
but I'm starting to get a little nervous. Do you
guys think that the acc.

Speaker 7 (41:20):
Could be completely left out of the playoff. I mean
there is a scenario for that, right, Oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (41:25):
Yeah, there's a scenario.

Speaker 2 (41:27):
I mean it's that is it's the five highest ranked
conference champions, not just every conference champion gets out.

Speaker 7 (41:32):
I think they're starting to get nervous because I mean,
if Duke, you know, if Duke, apparently they somehow still
control their own destiny. So I mean, I don't think
they're getting in if they somehow win the ACC and
I think that's a doom today scenario.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
Yeah, you're right about that. I appreciate the phone call, Brad,
thank you. I got to hit a break real quick.
But you're right. There was actually some talk today earlier
about the minute chance that Duke could be the champion
and doesn't make it, but that Miami could still get
in that large which would be objectively funny. All right,
how we're number two. Next, we'll keep taking your phone calls.

I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
