Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Today our number two emanating live from the Chandler Volta Studios,
the Carolina's Personal Injury Lawyers.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
One call that's all go to Cvinjurylaw dot Com. That's
Cvinjurylaw dot com. Hearty, thank you goes out to Pip
Chatterstone aka Chippatterson of CBS Sports dot Com The Cover
three Podcast, Our good friend. He and I have been
doing radio together for a decade and a half. It's
hard to believe. And he's awesome every single time. And
we got some texts coming in on the FanDuel text

(00:47):
line Sammy Sam Sam at somebody's real name on the
text line Sammy Sam Sam and not Sam Farber. He's
busy in Milwaukee right now. He says, Hey, guys, hope
y'all are doing well. I'm sure I missed it, but
is LaMelo playing tonight?

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Well?

Speaker 3 (00:59):
He better be after showing up to Sherry Canipple's house
last night and eating all of her food because apparently
last night the Canipple family hosted the entire Hornets team
at their home up in Wisconsin, where they played tonight
against the Bucks.

Speaker 5 (01:12):
Well, I tell you what, man.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
First of all, yes, LaMelo is listed as probable unless
something catastrophic happened between this morning when he woke up
and tip off tonight, which, knock on all the wood
doesn't happen.

Speaker 5 (01:24):
He should be playing tonight. But it's also notable.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Smoke was showing me a clip of Ryan Rosillo earlier
today on his podcast.

Speaker 5 (01:31):
Which we're about to get to here.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Oh, I mean, just a slobyrin over con Canipple. And
that's a weird sentence to say out loud.

Speaker 5 (01:37):
I heard that.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Wow, Yeah, just a slobrin over Canipple. That'szing sounds really wrong.
Just I mean, I think it's still PG thirteen or less,
but man, that sounds bad. Yeah, I mean, just the
league is taking notice of what a great young player
this appears to be and just how right the Hornets
appeared to have gotten the fourth overall pick in the draft.

Speaker 6 (01:54):
Wow, Scherry Carnipple just revealed how much food she had
last night. How much were we talking? How much food?
So J Man, who does a lot of work for
Duke basketball. Covering Duke basketball, he asked, how much food
do you have in the house? She said, twenty five
pounds of chicken fajitas. Good lord, I gotta think so
fourteen players because Ryan Colbrinder is still here understandably, so

(02:15):
I think he's kind of getting adjusted.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
Say is that enough?

Speaker 6 (02:19):
Well, you gotta think two the kids that she has,
she has about four or five, and probably the husband.

Speaker 5 (02:23):
I don't know. You couldn't have closed.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
So I'm saying, like, is that enough chicken veitas for
that many dudes? But No, it's just it's so wholesome,
Like it just takes you back to being fourteen years
old and playing on an AAU team or your JV
team and you go to somebody's mom's house and they
cook dinner and you get burgers and dogs, and apparently
still at the NBA level, we see that kind of,
you know, a wholesome get together. The Canipples hosting the
entire Hornets team last night at their their home in.

Speaker 6 (02:46):
Milwaukee, and I'm looking at all the other Caniple kids,
I'm like, we're gonna be looking at this photo like
eight years from now, Like there's that Canipple he's now
with the San Antonio Spurs. That Canipples with the Denver Nuggets,
and that Canipple is with the New York Knicks.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Ye give us all the Canipples in the NBA. And
wasn't it on Draft night? Didn't con say about one
of his brothers?

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Yet?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
He needs to work harder? And Cat did? Didn't he
say something like that? He ain't do nothing yet, He's
got to work harder and catch up. So, I mean
his dad plays. I think his dad was the all
time leading scorer at his college up until a couple
of years ago. Cherry was a fantastic Player's going to.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
Say Cherry was an all time great at her university.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Yeah, she was awesome too. So I mean, he just
he came by it naturally, honestly. And he's such a
savvy player to be such a youngster.

Speaker 6 (03:27):
When people say they want to win the genetic lottery,
this is what they mean.

Speaker 5 (03:30):
Well, you know what?

Speaker 3 (03:31):
You know that that thing that chad Ocho Cinko talked
about a couple of years ago where he when he
takes women out on dates, they don't go to the
movies or dinner. He takes him to do athletic things
so he can check out their ankles for procreation purposes.

Speaker 5 (03:44):
It makes me think of what Hugh Freeze would look
at cankles.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah, that's why I tell people all the time. I
married my wife in part because she was a figure skater.
She's athletic, so you know, there's not a lot of
height on her side of the family, so I got
to carry that gene. But you know, my kids should
be relatively athletic. So he's you know, Ocho Cinko's make
being sure he's not pro creating with cankles. And apparently
the nipples figured that out too, all right seven oh
four five, seven oh ninety six ten hit us up

(04:07):
on the fan duel text line. Jake from Steele Creek
says great shoulders too, ask mac uh. Yeah, I'm going
to leave that one alone.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
Say.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
The bagel guy says there's nothing better than a home
cooked meal, which is absolutely true. There's not much better
than a home cooked meal.

Speaker 5 (04:21):
All right.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Do we have no giveaways today, right, just encouraging people
to go see the hornets soon maybe tomorrow night.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
I guess the Oclahmba City thunder.

Speaker 6 (04:28):
Yeah, as you said, the Summer League champs taking on
the NBA Champs.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
Yeah, all right, let's go to smoke with the best
audio in sports. What did you say? You what? What
did you say?

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Hold up?

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Wait a minute, send me right. What I mean by
that is all right? What you got over there? All right?

Speaker 6 (04:46):
Well, we'll start out with the Carolina Panthers, specifically what
they're gonna do with offensive line this There's been a
lot of changes due to the injuries on the front lines,
and there's gonna be another change today. According to Dave Canals.
He said it's not gonna be Austin, but starting at
right guard.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
Yes, we do.

Speaker 7 (05:03):
Chandler will play. Chandler will start this game. And when
I look at these opportunities, I see these things as
competitions that happen. You know, where your focus can't be
you're competing against your teammate. But it is about opportunity
and who can make the most out of it. And
so I'm excited for Chandler to get in there and
see what he can bring us, you know, in the
run game, in the past.

Speaker 6 (05:20):
Game, and you'll have Austin available as needed.

Speaker 7 (05:24):
Yes, absolutely, he's invaluable to what we're doing. Gives us
flexibility inside. You know, if somebody does have to come
out for whatever reason, you know, he's got a lot
of flexibility along the inside of the line.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
So so zavolagists won the job.

Speaker 6 (05:40):
Huh, I've ever edited trying to see.

Speaker 5 (05:43):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (05:43):
I thought it was going to be Corbett until what
I'm saying the potential robber hunt return.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
So is the youngster just better? Are they going with
the youth movement? It's not expecting Corbett to be here
next year.

Speaker 6 (05:57):
He's last year in his deal, Like, I mean, that's
it interesting, right, And to be fair to Savola, last
year when he was in there, he played better.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
The problem is, oh, he's been fine this year when
he's healthy. That's a problem though.

Speaker 6 (06:07):
He's not been healthy enough right because he got hurt
early on in the Patriots game, and it didn't even
take one drive for him to get hurt in the
Packers game. Where is the There was also the something
like a sidebar note here, but I heard Mac talking
about it this morning. I haven't heard the Corbett audio
where he said this, but I think he gave an
interview yesterday in the locker room where he was I

(06:28):
think Korbes might be a wf and Z listener. I
gotta be honest, I think he might be a WFNZ listener.
More people than you realize the WFZ listen.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
No, that's true too. I like to believe so anyway.
But he basically was addressing the fan base where he
was like, guys, calm down, you can't be so emotional
week to week. And I'll raise my hand. I'm guilty
of that sometimes, right, we don't have to do what
they do. We're not the men in the arena in
this case.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
They are.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
We get to be the pundits, the talking heads, the
fans out there. But he was saying, you know, we're improving,
it's getting better. We're five and five, and I know
it feels bad, and you know last week looked bad,
but you can't think that way, right. We still have
a chance at the playoffs, we still have everything out
in front of us. We can't live that way. And
he basically said that's a very emotional way to live.

(07:11):
And I don't know how people can do that. And
I'm like, you know, some people more than others coorbs Ow.
But I thought it was a, you know, a useful
reminder that inside the locker room, they're not freaking out
and that they are viewing this as we're five and
five with everything.

Speaker 5 (07:28):
In front of us.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
We don't like the way that we played on Sunday either,
but stick with us. We're going to try to go
out there and play better Sunday in Atlanta.

Speaker 6 (07:35):
Look, and some people might viewed at his lip service,
I actually don't because of where Austin Corbett.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
It has been the type of style he is.

Speaker 6 (07:42):
This is a guy that entered into the league when
he was it was still Hugh Jackson in Cleveland, and
then he was in Cleveland with Freddie Kitchens as a
head coach. He knows what a mess is and he
knows what overreactions are. But he's also one of the
only guys in that locker room that has legit playoff experience.

Speaker 5 (07:57):
He's Wonder Bowl. Yeah, he's won a Super Bowl, so
he knows what it's like.

Speaker 6 (08:00):
So if he's saying that, I'm like, all right, I
got to take some weight on to that because he's
not just bs no.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
And I never thought he was bs ing.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
I just thought that, you know, he stepped up at
a time where they players and coaches often pretend. And
for some it's true right that they don't listen to anything,
you know, it doesn't permeate as much, but most guys do.
Even if they're not actively listening to WFNZ or sports
talk radio. They see the comments sections, they see the
responses and the mentions on Twitter. They know what the

(08:30):
Beat reporters are generally saying. They get the gist of
it from the questions that they're asked in press conferences
or you know, locker room media availability.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
So they get it.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
And so for him to come out and say, guys,
just stick with us, relax, this is getting better. We're improving,
We're better than we were, We're moving in the right direction.
He didn't say this, but you know, all progress isn't linear,
was the point that he was trying to make. And so, yeah,
last Sunday felt like a major setback. But if you
can go beat the Falcons on Sunday, get to six
and five, firmly, stay in the hunt, everything's people are

(09:01):
gonna just feel better on Monday.

Speaker 5 (09:02):
They just will.

Speaker 6 (09:03):
What else you got, well, And speaking of the Carolina Panthers,
a lot of people have been talking about the comments
that Nick Scorton made on Monday, and of course the
the former players have come on here saying someone needs
to shut him up real quick, Al Walls being the
most notable of those guys. But I also want to
point out he's been playing pretty damn well as of late,
and yesterday as Zero Rivera wanted to give Nick Scortzon

(09:24):
some credit for how he's been more consistent on the
field lately.

Speaker 8 (09:28):
This guy is h He's unbelievable. I mean, since the
day he walked in here, phenomenal work habits, great in
the classroom, he sat next to Pat Jones from day
one and just trying to absorb as much as he
could from He's very very coachable, He's very very smart.
He I don't know if I've ever seen a player,

(09:50):
especially at such a young age, play so hard. I mean,
every practice rep, every game rep he had running and
running and running, jumping onto the ball, doing all the
little things and so but anyways, my point is that
he when you work and prepare the way he does
in the classroom, in the training room, on in a
weight room, on the practice field, obviously you're going to

(10:13):
get better and that's what you're seeing. And so he
was drafted in that position for a reason, and with
his habits, he's going to continue to improve, and so
that's what he's done well.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
First of all, I too love Nick Scurton and have
loved Nick Gorton since the first time I saw him
with the preseason, chasing shade or Sanders all over the field,
and it's got everything to do with his motor and
the way he approaches the game. I remember being a
little bit concerned about him dropping from two eighty down
to two fifty five or whatever it is, and wondering

(10:44):
how he would play at that weight in the NFL.
I no longer worry about that. It's not a concern
that I have. He is relentless, He does work hard.
We have texters on the text line back to back. Interestingly,
eight h three numbers says Nick told the truth in
those comments about the players not being prepared. Last week,
Grant from Fort Mill just said, I respect Al Wallace

(11:05):
as a former player, but of course he would say
that about scoreton Al is always grumpy and glass half empty.
Now I don't get grumpy and glass half empty from Al.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Do you?

Speaker 5 (11:14):
No? I get blunt?

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Oh yeah, no, I'm telling you. I sit with the
FNZ guys in the Panthers press box every Sunday for
home games. To my right is Al Wallace. So I
talked to Al a lot on game day in the
press box. I don't think Al's grumpy. I think he's
just very pragmatic. Played in the NFL, played football his
entire life, knows what it's supposed to look like, calls
it as he sees it.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
That's it.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
And I don't think that Al thought that Nick was wrong.
In fact, he said as much. It's just that there's
a chain of command, there's a hierarchy, and the best
thing that it can do, quite frankly, is just continue
to be Nick. Because if you're outworking the veterans in practice,
that is going to speak for itself. Right, If you're
out there displaying that type of leadership as a young
guy just by leading by example, well that's all the

(11:56):
leading that you need to do as a rookie. But
it will speak volumes to your teammates inside the locker room.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
What else you got?

Speaker 2 (12:02):
All?

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Right?

Speaker 6 (12:03):
Big weekend in college football, a lot of big games
in the ACC, Virginia taking on Duke. But there is
a potential trap game element. A lot of people were
thinking of with the game in South Beach between n
C State and Miami in C State's coming off of
bye week and the last time they were on a
football field they beat Georgia Tech, and Aaron Taylor Notre
Dame legend talked about Miami potentially being on upset alert.

Speaker 9 (12:25):
If you're Miami and you're a fan of the Hurricanes,
you got to be nervous because n C State is
the type of team that can beat you if they
sense that you're not playing confident. They seem vulnerable weeks one,
in Weeks two when they were whooping Notre Dame, everybody's like,
this is the year from homy I proclaimed it in
this very studio, this is the year that the Hurricane's
been waiting for.

Speaker 10 (12:46):
Pumped the breaks that.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Didn't live so with inflicted Wollams though so many penalties,
no question, many interceptions, one hundred percent rick.

Speaker 10 (12:53):
They're the most talented team in the ACC. There's no
question about that the individual players. But they don't play
like that as a team, and they beat themselves way
too many penalties, way too undisciplined, jumping off sides and
key moments and games, and they beat themselves If NC
State can go out and execute, they're going to be good.
They didn't just beat Georgia Tech. They whipped man very

(13:14):
good offensive lineup front of Joe Moore Awards semi FINALI
is one of the best ten offensive lines in college football.
Georgia Tech got wally mopped at the line of scrimmage.
N C State, playing at their best can give Miami
all they want. The Canes better be careful.

Speaker 5 (13:29):
Did he just hit us with a Wally MOPPT? Yes,
he did, didn't he?

Speaker 10 (13:32):
Well?

Speaker 5 (13:32):
I mean he is an alignment, So what are you
talking about?

Speaker 3 (13:35):
No, no, molliwopped, not wally mopped. Oh, waliwopp There you
said it right, he hit us with a Wally mopt.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
I guess it's different up north. Is that what you
think that is?

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:47):
I don't know about all that. So I mean, lookten
State beat Georgia Tech. That speaks for itself. So we
know State possesses the ability to compete. We've known that,
but they remind this of that in a big way
against Georgia Tech. But they're in Miami. I don't know
if they can look the same on the road. But
here's the catch. As Chip Patterson brought up a little

(14:09):
while ago.

Speaker 5 (14:13):
CJ. Bailey a little.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
Bit of a homecoming right played at shamanad Madonna High
School down in Hollywood, Florida. He's gonna have a lot
of people there watching him, much like Kanka Nipple and
Milwaukee Tonight. Gonna be a lot of CJ. Bailey people
at hard Rock Stadium this weekend. Also, I have to
believe that Mario Christobaul is looking at CJ. Bailey, not
just in terms of tomorrow's game plan, but also for
twenty twenty six.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
Don't you think, Oh my god.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Yeah, I mean you got to find a quarterback for
twenty twenty six.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
He's a perfect guy too, He's.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
From your backyard. You assume that Miami's willing to outspend
NC State for him. They've been linked to Lenora's sellers too,
so they're gonna be They're in the quarterback market for
twenty twenty six.

Speaker 5 (14:54):
I don't know, CJ. Bailey.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
You can go win the game, but also maybe audition
for your next job.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Also, defense needs to get a stopper two in six seven, CJ. Bailey, Sorry,
what else you got?

Speaker 6 (15:06):
Well, we end with a guy who has the number
seven in the NBA. We've talked about him just within
the last few minutes hosting the entire Hornets team for
supper con Kinipple. If you don't know, Bill Simmons is
already a massive fan of him before the season even started.
He said he expects Conkiniple to be on the twenty
twenty eight Olympic team.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
That actually might be a pretty good take.

Speaker 6 (15:27):
And well, his former podcast mate Ryan Rossillo is also
a massive fan of Conkinipple.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
Conkinipple ten games in he's perfect. Look his family, so
I guess his mom was the all time leading score
at her college. The dad was the all time leading
scorer at his college up until like a few years ago.
I've got a couple uncles, one that played overseas. He
was built in a basketball lap. Watching Conkinipple play basketball
in him understanding the game like this already. Yeah, sure,

(15:55):
it's it's seventeen six and three, forty five and forty
shooting splits. That's I didn't even care about that.

Speaker 5 (16:01):
I watched that.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Full Lakers game the other night, and it's just the
way he sees the game. And we saw some of
this that duke, even though there were so many guys
with the ball in his hand that you know, like
we had Shyer on. It was like, yeah, you know,
there's probably more that he could have done, but the
team was stacked. And now he's a rookie on not
a great team and he doesn't force anything, I mean,

(16:22):
just really simple things. Rebound wants to get the ball
to court. Had another play where he was like beyond
the three point line on the right side, kind of
near the break, gets the ball, probably could have put
it on the floor, decided to like, you know, hey,
I'm cooking here a little bit.

Speaker 5 (16:36):
Let me see what I got.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
He saw a trail teammate coming down and he was like,
you know what, let me get this guy a look.
He threw it back to him, sets like a little
brush screen. So he's giving the ball handler now a
couple different options. Even though he had a shot. He
had another player where he went coast to coast and
he could see the play developing in front of him,
where normally he would want to get the ball up quicker,
but he was like, defense is kind of slacking here

(16:57):
a little bit. I think I'm going to have a seal,
like right at the restricted area if my teammate like
stays on that side of the defender. Then I'm gonna
have a wide open laneup. I want to go to
the Canipple family camp if they start one.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
I just love the way he started that audio cut.
Conka Nipple is perfect. I mean perfect might be a
little bit of a stretch, but laying it out the
way that he didn't. We've talked about it that way too.
He comes from a great basketball lineage. I mean mom, dad,
all time leading scorers at their college programs respectively, uncles

(17:32):
that played overseas. He just was immersed in it growing up.
And he's so good. And sometimes I do think we've
forgotten about how basketball players used to look and the
way the game used to look, and he does have
a very real throwback quality to his game. That because
he wasn't as springy as a couple of other guys,
because he wasn't Cooper Flag on his own team, that

(17:52):
it's like, well, yeah, I guess you're getting the leftovers
from that Duke team.

Speaker 6 (17:56):
Now.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
I'm not ready to say the Hornet's got the best
player off that Duke team, but I do think we're
entering a conversation where it's at least up for debate.
Over the next couple of years as to who got
the better player off that duke team, the Dallas Mavericks
or the Charlotte Hornets. And I did not think we'd
be having that conversation.

Speaker 5 (18:12):
No, I did not. It's Phil shocking Cole it is.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
That's what did you say? The best audio in the
world of sports? When we return? Eric Spanberg, Charlotte Business Journal,
A lot going on in the world of Charlotte sports
and business. Eric Spanberg joins US next Sports Radio ninety
two to seven wfn Z.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
Conkin Nipple, He's perfect.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
Sports Radio ninety two to seven wfen Z. Queen said
he hope everybody out there has a wonderful weekend. Don't
forget Hornets Bucks tonight eight o'clock from the five Serve
Forum up n Milwaukee, Wisconsin, seven o'clock pre game right here,
myself and Travis T. Bone Handcock got you Tomorrow night,
I get to work with the p Man. I get
Willy Palachi on Hornet's pre game tomorrow night. The bone

(19:10):
man's taking a night off. I think he's headed to
the Duke game tomorrow, So join me and Willy p
tomorrow for pregame. And he's got post. He's pulling double
duty tomorrow night. I used to do that back before
I had kids. And then Sunday morning countdown to kick
off the only Panthers pregame coverage you'll ever need.

Speaker 5 (19:26):
Myself.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Chris McClain, eleven am from Twin Peaks in Fort Mill,
right next door to Carowins. You can watch the roller
coasters go up and down while you get ready for
the football game on Sunday morning.

Speaker 5 (19:34):
Why'd you look at me like that?

Speaker 3 (19:36):
Are they still operating to roller coasters right now? I
don't know, are they? What did they shut those down?

Speaker 6 (19:40):
I thought they shut down right after Oh gosh, what
they call the Halloween thing?

Speaker 3 (19:45):
Oh scarewins? Yeah, yeah, I'm looking forward to Winterfest or
whatever they call that thing. What's the what's the Christmas
with all the lights in the Christmas stuff? What do
they call that thing?

Speaker 5 (19:53):
I don't know. Usually go to Shelton Motor Speedway for that. Well, no,
I mean you can go.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
You can go to multiple places, you know that, right, Smoke,
You don't have to go just one place year.

Speaker 6 (20:00):
I'm joking. Okay, When I think of the big ones
around his Herriat, that's what I think of okay, I
like that one.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
The Whitewater Center does a cool thing for Christmas too,
But anyway, well come you know what. It actually kind
of ties right in with this next conversation. Eric Spanberg,
Charlotte Business Journal. I bothered him yesterday, like two hours
before the show, and he was like, leave me alone.
I'll come on tomorrow. And so he's following through on that.
Eric Spanberg is back with us on a Friday. What's
going on, brother, how you.

Speaker 4 (20:22):
Been Well, yes, I will go ahead and confess you
were speaking of roller coasters. In the last forty eight hours.
I have declined the head football coaching jobs at my
alma mater, LSU. You're alma mater Virginia Tech, Arkansas and others.
So that's why I was busy. But I'm available today.
So let's get to it.

Speaker 5 (20:42):
Two things. This is why I love you.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
It's also why I missed you because I had already
prepared for my first question to be about LSU football,
and you beat me to the punch because I had
to ask as much of an asset as you are
to this city with the Charlotte Business Journal, and I
mean that and as much as I know you love
living here. Is there any part of you that jealous
that you don't get to cover this LSU coaching search
and all of the insanity that goes along with it.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
Are you kidding me? This is the ultimate Louisiana dumpster
fire gumbo political corruption fest. I am really feeling homesick
watching this one play out. Good Lord, we have outdone ourselves.

Speaker 3 (21:20):
Can you explain to the folks that might not because
I don't even know that I fully understand it. I
didn't grow up in Louisiana politics, But like, can you
explain why the governor's even involved? Because it truly is
a very uniquely Southern thing about college football and the
way this is happening, But it's also a uniquely Louisiana thing.
Why does Jeff Landry have anything to do with this?

Speaker 4 (21:38):
Yes, it is. It is Southern. And then some as
you've probably seen or maybe you haven't, this goes back
to Huey Long in the twenties and thirties, who was
essentially a dictator governor and became one of the most
powerful politicians in twentieth century America, And he was involved

(21:59):
from head to toe with the LSU program from the
band and their uniforms and the field and pep talks
and telling the coaches what place to call it. It
is just ingrained in the culture of Louisiana. Really, they're
only other than food. The only things we talk about
are LSU football and politics, and so it's inevitable that

(22:20):
the two would be mixed together.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
Yeah, it is. You're right, and it's just fascinating and
I love it. And I know you knew you were
jealous not to be able to cover that. All right now,
speaking of big sports stories, I did see a minute
ago as I was scrolling your timeline, because really, our
interviews are easy because I just follow your reporting and
then ask you about it when you come on the air.
Eight hundred eleven million dollars gambled in North Carolina in October, Eric,

(22:45):
I mean, that number.

Speaker 5 (22:46):
Just keeps going up.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
And I'm kind of hesitant to go over the top
on this because you know, we got sports embroiled and
gambling scandals right now, so it's not all great. But
like nearly a billion dollars gambled in North Carolina in October.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
Yeah, that really shocked me. And you're right, and I
you know, I mentioned in my story as I think
all of us are right now, we knew, or I
think most of us, an anybody who's kind of level
headed new that this comes with a lot of risk,
this intermingling of gambling and sports. We're seeing it play out.
It feels like there's a new scandal every day. And

(23:20):
yet at the same time, when you look at North
Carolina and how this has gone, the thing that surprises
me the most, Kyle, is that you knew it would
be active at the beginning. I really thought after I
don't know, six nine months, not that it would go
away by any stretches, but I didn't feel as though
it would be sustained or you know, keep growing. But

(23:43):
that is by far, I think, by some I don't know,
two hundred million dollars. That is by far the biggest
month that North Carolina has had since it legalized online
sports betting in March of twenty twenty four. So yeah,
that shows you the allure of this and the power
of pro and college football.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Well again, just the number itself, staggering, eight hundred and
eleven million dollars. Do you have any thoughts on the
I mean, the sweeping federal indictments, the FBI probe it's
not just the NBA. Now, we got a couple of
baseball pitchers I'd swept up in this as well. Like,
I think we're all wondering how deep does it go?

Speaker 4 (24:16):
Yeah, I think you know the obvious is how deep
does it go? By the way, there was another story
this week about unnamed college athletes being involved in some
kind of gambling ring. We don't have a lot of
details about that. I would say a couple things about it. First,
to go back where we were earlier. It's inevitable when
you have this close up a relationship between gambling and

(24:39):
professional and college sports. The other thing is, I think
all of us want to know what is the line
before people begin to say I don't trust this, and
what I mean I shouldn't use the word line right,
terrible gambling plant. But what I mean by that is
are these legitimate competitions. We all know that if you

(25:01):
lose that aspect of sports, there's really no reason to watch.
If it's staged, a lot of the allure goes away.
I guess maybe you would say, well, look at professional wrestling,
but this is a different thing. Major League Baseball, in
the NFL and the NBA, those are not predicated on
that type of entertainment. The most attractive aspect of this

(25:24):
is that you have great athletes and you have no
idea what's going to happen. So if you begin to
chip away at that, there will be a point where
you're going to start to see some erosion of fan interest.
And the question is how much does it take to
make that happen.

Speaker 5 (25:37):
Well, apparently we're not close.

Speaker 3 (25:38):
If people are gambling eight hundred eleven million dollars in
the state of North Carolina in a single month, that's
just wild. Eric Spanberg, Charlotte Business Journal, hanging out with
us here on a Friday. Go back to the news
from weeks ago. Teper Sports and Entertainment partnering with Live
Nation to build I believe a forty four hundred seat
indoor amphitheater concert venue. No public money attached to this.

(25:59):
I know that was one of the lead story or
parts of the story when it first came out, but
I haven't heard much about it since then. What should
folks know about this and how did it come to be?

Speaker 4 (26:07):
Yeah, so this is something that David Tepper has been
hinting at for a long time that he wanted some
kind of music venue to be at the stadium or
near the stadium, beyond doing stadium concerts because obviously they
are only a handful of acts that can play a
stadium and fill it up when you go to forty
four hundred people. That gives you many, many more options.

(26:31):
Partnering with Live Nation gives you access to the best tours.
The thing that is interesting to me, one of the
things that's interesting to me about this, Kyle, is almost
every sports team now is looking for a way to
get into concerts or to add more concerts from Spectrum
Center obviously, to be of a stadium. You've heard talk

(26:53):
of UNC Charlotte perhaps hosting concerts out there, any venue
anywhere in the country. The answer is always, well, we'll
bring in concerts, and people love live music, obviously. But
I do wonder kind of what is the breaking point here,
because you also have P and C Music Pavilion, you
have theaters here, you have the ad Exchange Music Factory.

(27:16):
What I will say in the case of this venue
is between having an alliance with an NFL owner and
Live Nation, they're going to get their shows now. I
don't know who they're taking their shows from, but they're
going to get their shows.

Speaker 3 (27:30):
See that's what I was wondering too. You know, who
does this pull from and who does this hurt the most?
But now listen options are good for the consumer. But
somebody's going to be hurt by that, and I'm sure
there's some folks not happy that it's going down that way.
Eric Spanberg, Charlotte Business Journal, hanging out with us here
on a Friday, Just going back through some of your
recent reporting and stories. You know, the Savannah Bananas are
a big deal everywhere they go. They sold out Bank

(27:51):
of America Stadium back to back nights, one hundred and
fifty thousand tickets sold. But you reported but I think
about a month ago that there are new teams coming
to truest Fee this coming year, that Banana Ball is expanding.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
What should we know?

Speaker 4 (28:04):
Yeah, so one of the teams is the Party Animals,
who have typically played They've been to Washington Generals, if
you will, to the Bananas, but they also go off
and do their own thing from time to time. And
the Bananas are now adding a couple of more teams.
And Jesse Cole, the guy who created this with his wife,

(28:24):
is trying to create a whole League of Banana Ball,
and I think this is going to be really interesting, Kyle, because,
as you mentioned, the bananas have been such an overwhelming
success story, so popular. But as you know, when things
get bigger and bigger and bigger, it's harder and harder
to do quality control to keep from being oversaturated. So

(28:48):
I'm really curious to see how this does. Now. Obviously
there's a big difference between feeling via a stadium and
feeling truest field, but you do wonder kind of how
much of an appetite is there for banana ball. We're
about to get a good idea.

Speaker 5 (29:05):
Now, a couple of big things. We'll let you go.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
Charlotte FC bowed out of the postseason last week. They're
done for a while. Also news on the restructuring or
the changing of the schedule that came down yesterday from
Commissioner Don Garber. I also saw that you had reported
they saw an eight percent dropping attendance year over year,
but still ranked third in MLS attendance. Thoughts on maybe

(29:27):
why we saw attendance drop by eight percent this year,
but also any thoughts on the changing of the schedule
to align with the European and global soccer schedules.

Speaker 4 (29:37):
Yeah, a couple things there. First of all, let's knock
out the schedule real fast. I think that's a good idea.
I think being aligned with what the rest of the
sport does, particularly the highest echelons of the sport is doing,
is a good idea. Secondly, I'm going to throw in
one for you. The restructuring of the Apple deal tells
me that MLS knows they don't have a very good

(29:58):
media deal because they're shortening. And then, thirdly, on attendance,
I was a little bit surprised by that. I know
there is, you know, more competition than ever for an
entertainment dollar, but particularly because Charlotte f C had such
a good season, I would have thought that they would
have at least held the line. I think the thing

(30:19):
to watch here with attendance for Charlotte f C is
they made a pretty significant shift this past season away
from doing the full stadium capacity. You remember, they would
open the upper bowl a lot and you'd have tickets
for fifteen dollars. I think that by limiting the capacity,
you probably create more value for your season ticket holders,

(30:40):
and you also maybe create a little bit more of
a sense of urgency going forward, so that might help
them start to get that number going back up.

Speaker 3 (30:48):
Last thing, the Dicky v Invitational that was here, just
I think what two weeks ago?

Speaker 5 (30:52):
Is that right?

Speaker 3 (30:53):
Two weeks ago? I think last week? I'm sorry, bed
time flies. So twelve thousand, four thirty five showed up
for that event. I loved it, Like I love the
fact that they had it at all. Charlotte's become really
a depth. The Charlotte Sports Foundation doing a great job
with all these things too. But like that twelve thousand
and four to thirty five, is that a good number?
Does that guarantee staying power? Will you think?

Speaker 4 (31:16):
I think it will be back. I think it's an
okay number. Look at the nineteen thousand capacity building. They
had a good matchup. I think they were hurt by
the late tip off. I believe it was an eight
forty five tip on a school night. I wonder whether
they will look at maybe a Friday night, a Thursday

(31:36):
night something like that next year. But I suspect that
this will continue. For the most obvious reason. The ratings
on ESPN were really good, and ESPN is one of
the lead organizers with a sports foundation, and we know
the appetite for college basketball is here, so I think
they can build on this.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
Eric, you're the best man. Thank you for the time.
Great catching up and hope to see again soon.

Speaker 4 (31:59):
Sounds good.

Speaker 5 (32:00):
Good weekend YouTube man.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
Eric Spanberg, Charlotte Business Journal, Little Sports Business Talk on
a Friday, really appreciate his time. Eight oh three numbers
said KB. I don't know about the new music venue
being good for consumers. The concert ticket prices are so
ridiculous that I'm out of that market.

Speaker 5 (32:15):
Yeah, but how old are you? That's my question? How
old are you?

Speaker 8 (32:19):
Like?

Speaker 3 (32:19):
What phase of what season of life are you in?
And I think that matters. It does because it affects
your perspective and how you look at that.

Speaker 5 (32:26):
Now, you're right.

Speaker 3 (32:27):
I mean, I'm not a big fan of asking government
to do much of anything for me, but you know,
regulating the fees and the secondary pro mean, consumers have
been ripped off. Wasn't there a a ticket Master lawsuit
over this not that long ago? I mean, just raking
consumers over the coals with these things. So I'm not
as well versed. I'm not well versed enough to go

(32:49):
rant about it. But I ask you that because, like
I got little kids. I'm not going to concerts right now.
A lot of people in my age range, you know,
thirties forties with kids, we don't get out to.

Speaker 5 (32:58):
Concerts very much.

Speaker 6 (32:59):
It's like you get from the teens to twenties, Yeah,
and then your's a gap until you get to your fifties.

Speaker 3 (33:06):
Like you know, kids get older, and then you know,
you and the missus hit the town again. Like it's
I don't know, Like I will pay to go see
certain acts.

Speaker 5 (33:14):
I just will. Like there, I'll pay a hundred bucks
to go see a favorite. I'll do it.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
Like if Sturgel goes in does a concert at that Am,
I'll go see Sturgel. I'll pay to go see that.
And this is just me. I'll go see Turnpike Troubadours,
and I'll go see Chris Stapleton, the guys. Like I'll go,
I'll pay for that. So I think it matters what
season of life you're in. Like my parents now they're older,
but they love live music. We're out of the house.

(33:38):
They can come to Charlotte, see the grand kids, go
watch the Eagles reunion, you know stuff like that.

Speaker 6 (33:43):
I mean, well, no, I saw it because my parents
they did a couple of fundraisers for the high school.
They did Bob Sieger and a Silver Bullet band as
you know, doing beer beer concessions at the Amphitheater. Yeah,
and they're like, holy crafty amount of people that are
like you could tell the money that is something round
with those people. And there were a lot of older
people too, you know, even at Zach Brown band concert. Yeah,

(34:05):
they saw a lot too. So it just depends on
what type of a ranger in. And I remember as
a kid I wanted to go see Toby Keith, but
my mom and dad were like, all right, you go
see Toby Keith, or you go to this NASCAR race.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Dude, I've been on a Toby Keith bender lately. Oh
I've been listening to so much Toby Keith. I missed
that guy.

Speaker 5 (34:22):
Well, who's that man that just running my life?

Speaker 3 (34:25):
I underestimated how much of how much of my like
teens in twenties he was the soundtrack too.

Speaker 6 (34:31):
Well, it makes sense because his prime was like from
ninety four to ninety five to two thousand and five,
two thousand and six. Do you I saw a video
the other night and we have to hit a break.
I saw a video the other night. I believe he
played I should have been a Cowboy. I think the
first time he played it publicly, And I could be
wrong about this, but that's the way it seemed. I
think he played it for the first time for Troy

(34:53):
Aikman on camera and he looks at him and he's like,
you like this part I should Have been a Cowboy?

Speaker 5 (34:58):
And it was like, Oh, that's all. That's incredible. All right,
Let's go to smoke on the headlights. All right, Kyle.

Speaker 6 (35:07):
This is a college football injury report brought to you
by Neogenics, where all you have to lose is the pain.
We start with tonight's game between Louisville and Clemson. It's
looking like Isaac Brown, running back, is still out for
the Cardinals. That's going to be pretty big in NC
State's game. Here's a pretty big one. Justin Jolly is

(35:31):
questionable for that game. That would be big for NC
State to get him in time for a massive game
down in South Beach. Chandler Morris is still questionable, but
a lot more people like Pete Pammel, are reporting that
it looks like he could be a go for tomorrow's
game if they have him.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
That will be massive.

Speaker 6 (35:47):
And oh my gosh, I just looked at Boston College's
injury report. Jesus wise, it's about twenty five people in total.
Sorry Fattius Dixon for North Carolina, Trevor sorry, go ahead.
Patty's Dixon is questionable for North Carolina, while Chris Barnes
is questionable for Wake Forest. They have a pretty long list,

(36:07):
but it's not like Boston College just lists. Oh dear God,
God bless them. I mean, good Lord. It must be
tough being a Boston College fan or alumni at this point,
because not only is the football team struggling this year,
your basketball team just lost to Central Connecticut.

Speaker 3 (36:21):
A directional Connecticut school. Yeah, I don't know what Boston
College brings to the ACC nothing. All right, we'll come back.
We'll tell you who balled Out. Sports Radio ninety two
to seven w f and Z.

Speaker 9 (36:39):
City get on your beat.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Hello, look protect charge of the years.

Speaker 5 (36:50):
Let me can you come to the buck. He's got
good coming on. It can't say back to us running
into the area. It'll pass towards the fields.

Speaker 6 (37:01):
Bright.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
It's time for who balled Out? Powered by high performance
real estate advisors and the Biggest Dad gumballer of them all,
Thomas L. Rodd go to High Performance real Estate dot
Com and they'll see you at the closing table. Smoke
what you bring for the people.

Speaker 6 (37:25):
I gotta go with the old Dominion rushing attack because
Devin Roche, Trey Kwan Jones in quarterback Culton Joseph combined
for a massive performance. In total, the ODU rushing attack
had forty seven carries for three hundred and fifty one
yards and three touchdowns as ODU blank Troy thirty three
to nothing. Ohdu quietly having a good year at seven

(37:47):
and three. They also had this guy, James frank Dude
stole my thunder.

Speaker 3 (37:51):
I was that that wasn't the biggest news of the
night in Norfolk last night. No, that wasn't the biggest
news of the night. The biggest news of the night
is that James Franklin was wandering around the sideline in
the hottest recruiting bed, most fertile recruiting bed in the
Commonwealth of Virginia, so the seven five seven, and of
course it led to more speculation that yeah, he was

(38:12):
there to see his old assistant coach Ricky on the
ODU sidelines. He's done a very good job. But it
was also that James Franklin was there in the Commonwealth
to get a head start on, you know, shaking babies
and kissing hands for his next recruiting venture in the Commonwealth.
Because the rumors persist of James Franklin to Virginia Tech.
But they persist at the same time though nothing's happened.

(38:35):
Absolutely nothing's happened, and people keep asking me about this
on the text line every single day on the show.
They got NDA signed in Blacksburg. Nobody's talking, like nobody's talking.
And this was the point I told you that when
the news came out weeks ago that they had signed NDA's,
the Coaching Search Committee, everybody involved had been forced to
sign non disclosure agreements, you know that way there's actual

(38:57):
penalties for leaking to the press. Nobody's talking, So the
Franklin stuff won't go away. But he hasn't signed anything yet.
And of course last night just flared up all the speculation.

Speaker 5 (39:07):
Oh oh, look at him.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
He's in Virginia where he'd be doing most of his recruiting.
That's so interesting that he's out there right now.

Speaker 6 (39:14):
It was so big that David Hall actually tweeted an emoji,
the eyeball emoji. Right when David Hell is tweeting emoji
or not David Hall, David Teal's at tweeting emojis.

Speaker 3 (39:23):
Well, David Teal straight up ast him. Did you see that?
David Teal walked up to James Franklin was like, Hey,
what about these rumors?

Speaker 5 (39:28):
And he said.

Speaker 3 (39:29):
Franklin was very polite and then just kind of walked away.

Speaker 5 (39:32):
He didn't answer question. It's either Virginia Tech money or
Walton money.

Speaker 3 (39:37):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, well we could talk about that.
I'll go with Drake May, who last night went twenty
five of thirty four for two to eighty one and
a touchdown as the Patriots beat the Jets on Thursday
Night Football twenty seven to fourteen. Traveon Henderson also a
couple of touchdowns nineteen carries sixty two yards. Not the
biggest night, but two touchdowns. I'm sure Fantasy the owners

(40:00):
love that. Drake May and the Patriots balling out seven
oh four, five, seven oh ninety six ten hit us
up on the FanDuel text line. Oh, look at the
text line right now, natean mccaddinville said, because he's waiting
for the Florida State job to open. You think that's
what it is. He's waiting for the Florida State job
to open.

Speaker 5 (40:17):
What money?

Speaker 3 (40:18):
I just that's been one of the more interesting things
about this new era of college football is we're finding
out who really has money and who doesn't.

Speaker 5 (40:25):
Right? What else? The whole thing with Jimbo leaving Florida
State too, right.

Speaker 3 (40:28):
Florida State's not poor, but they're not among the richest
universities or programs in the country. They had a great brand,
and they still have a great brand. Like you know,
it's hard to ignore that. I should say Florida State's
brand is still strong. And I was wrong, by the
way about Trevon Henderson. He had three total touchdowns. I'm
sorry about that because I'm getting called out on the
text line. Two rushing, one receiving.

Speaker 5 (40:50):
My bad. I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (40:52):
But like you know, Alabama's not as rich as you
thought they were. Alabama's not out spending everybody in nil
payments and paying for the They're not out spending everybody
in college. I think people just assumed it goes back
to that hole the rich are just gonna get richer.

Speaker 5 (41:07):
Alabama's not out spending a lot of teams.

Speaker 6 (41:09):
I mean, and now we've seen Texas Tech and Indiana
entered the chat over the last two to three years. Now,
Indiana large part of that has to do with the
fact that they got hit on the right coach. Also,
big ten money, right, big ten money is a real thing.
But I think people didn't realize how much Lubbock has
inside their bank account and aka, how much nothing goes
on around Lubbock. What do you hear about Lubbock all

(41:32):
these years, Kyle, It's just Texas Tech.

Speaker 5 (41:35):
It's basically Texas Tech and nothing else.

Speaker 6 (41:37):
Well, danil Era has proven that Lubbock only is Texas
Tech and that's all they care about. And they're gonna
put every single dollar that they have into that program.

Speaker 5 (41:47):
And it's working out.

Speaker 6 (41:48):
And it also helps that they have a good coach
and Joey Maguire, you know, that does help.

Speaker 3 (41:52):
But I think Cody Campbell is what they have. Yeah,
they have all man Cody Campbell who also played football
Texas Tech.

Speaker 5 (42:00):
But I mean he is he's funding everything. I mean,
I'm not.

Speaker 3 (42:04):
Like, not like single handedly, but his boosterism, you know,
his his his pockets have allowed Texas Tech to do
what they're doing. I mean, think about how much of
a consistent college basketball power they've become in the last
several years, multiple coach, through what three four different coaches,
and they're still annually in the Elite eight.

Speaker 5 (42:24):
Are better?

Speaker 6 (42:24):
I mean, people thought when they let Chris Beard go,
and understandably so, or was that no, that was when
he went with Texas. But people thought when Chris Beard
left Texas Tech for Texas that would be enough. Then
the coach that they had had an incident, It's like, oh,
that's not going to be good. Then the new coach
came in and like, oh, they're back in the Elite eight.
Almost making final fours gave Florida arguably its toughest test
in the whole entire NCAA tournament. And I mean they

(42:46):
just lost their best player in basketball who's now at
NC State and Darien Williams. Yet they're probably gonna find
a way to make it to the second weekend yet again.

Speaker 5 (42:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (42:53):
Yeah, that's how much pockets money they have in their pockets,
all right.

Speaker 3 (42:57):

Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
