Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Kyle Bailey Show powered by
Victory Chevy Charlotte, where just nineteen dollars down could put
you in a brand new Chevrolet.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Today our number two Sports Radio ninety two to seven
(00:28):
wfn Z, home of a Charlotte sports fan.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
The show brought to you by Victory Chevrolet. Go to
Victory Chevrolet dot com. See what my boy Brandon Gandy
has in stock. He's got Silverado's, Tahoes, Blazers, Suburbans, equinoxes, traverses,
all sorts of good stuff. Go to Victory Chevrolet dot com.
Just nineteen dollars down could put you in a brand
new Chevrolet. Will Polotchik is back in twenty three minutes. Apparently,
(00:51):
the Commissioner of Major League Soccer, Don Garber, is set
to hold a press conference at four point thirty, and
it sounds like that means, at least according to the
scuttle butt around Major League Soccer, that they're going to
do this thing and no longer play from what I guess,
spring through fall, but instead fall through the winner into
the spring. You know, start the season in the fall.
(01:13):
I guess, have some sort of December January break and
then finish the season in the spring, which would put
them head to head in the fall against the NFL,
which I know is a big part of this conversation.
But it sounds like there's a Don Garbert press conference
coming in twenty seven minutes and they may do this.
So we'll get to all that with Willie P. We'll
talk about a disappointing exit to the playoffs from the
playoffs for Charlotte FC this past weekend, and we'll talk
(01:35):
a little Panthers and Hornets as well. De Orlando Ledbetter,
Atlanta Journal Constitution, longtime award winning Falcons beat reporter De
Orlando Ledbetter back at five twenty five here this afternoon,
seven oh four, five, seven oh ninety six to ten.
Hit us up on the FanDuel text line right now though,
we go back to the phone, lones GM.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Joe is back. It's been a minute, Joe, how you been? Man?
Speaker 5 (01:56):
Good kby the later first.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Day, Thank you sir. What's on your mind?
Speaker 6 (02:00):
A couple of hornings things. I went out for the
first home game. I wanted to see the team, but
I wanted to see the new renovations and I was
in line to check out this new chicken and waffle meal.
And the person in front of me in line said
that looks pretty good, and so I said, will it
(02:21):
p and he said yes, yes.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
I didn't tell him I was GM Joe, but I
did tell him I do listen to the station a lot,
and he seemed to like that. But that voice you
can hear, you can you can tell his voice anywhere.
But more importantly, last night, I'm a season ticket holder.
They invited the season ticket holders to sit over in
(02:50):
the practice facility and ask questions.
Speaker 6 (02:53):
They had Grant Williams, a player, and they had Jeff Peterson,
and then they had the president of business officer. So
I got a chance to ask a question. And I
hope and Harness fans will like the question I asked.
I told them, I said, look, I'm in the season
ticket holders says nineteen eighty eight up until twenty sixteen,
(03:13):
when Jordan made this comment that he was not going
to spend the money to go into the luxury tax
unless they make the playoff. And so I asked Jeff Peterson,
the new owners, will they give you permission to go
into the luxury tax? I said, you've accumulated all these assets,
all these traff picks and if you've got a good
(03:36):
trade or a free agent, it's going to take you
into the luxury attacks. Will the new owners allow you
to do that?
Speaker 4 (03:42):
And he said yeah, hey.
Speaker 6 (03:45):
He said yes, Wow.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
Had to hear that.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
And then later on after what I talked to them
also and I said, I said, remember not Danny Age
accumulated all these d asked us in Boston and wouldn't
use them. And then he you know, he left and
then Brass Stevers had to come in and use them
and they won a championship. He said, yeah, he said,
we're gonna make smart moves. You make smart moves, and
(04:11):
you make it at the right time. But we were
dedicated to making the plass. We want to make the
playoffs every year. We don't want to to play.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
It's a nine year drought. And so I like what
I heard from Jeff Peaston. I'm just wanted to pass
that on to any Hornets fans out there.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Well, I'm glad you could share that with us. Joe,
Thank you very much man for the phone call last
night on the pregame show. You know, Sam Farber radio
voice and the Hornets couldn't join us for his usual
spot because he was hosting the town hall that you're
referencing there, so I didn't know what was said I
was on the air, So that's really interesting to know
that I hadn't seen reports of that.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
I'm also not shocked about it.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
The salary cap this year, I believe, is about one
hundred and fifty five million dollars. The luxury tax is
about one eighty seven point nine. And then you know
with the new NBA salary apron system, the first apron
is set for like one hundred and ninety six million dollars,
the second is it two seven, and so you know,
as you progress into that kind of spending, you know,
it starts to become more punitive. You get you know more,
(05:06):
you become more penalized for things to try to keep
you know, some sense of parody in the league. But
it has changed roster construction, right. We've talked about that
quite a bit, So it's encouraging to hear that, and
I think the organization's in a much better place. You're
not doing that anytime really soon, but maybe in the
next couple of years, once you think you have a
team that can compete, maybe for a championship. Seven oh four, five, seven,
(05:27):
oh ninety six ten, hit us up on the FanDuel
text line. Phone lines open as well. So mind yours?
QC said, no luxury tax caller, No, no, no, not now,
but into the future. I mean if in two years
this core has come together and you know, I don't know,
you know, in two years, who of Miles, bri of
LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller and company will still be here?
Speaker 4 (05:48):
It's the NBA.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
But you know, you're willing to go into the tax
for a team that can win a title because you're
still turning a big profit on a title team. It's
why Golden State was willing to do it, albeit under
different you know, salary cap structure and circumstances. You know,
they were so willing to do that because the windfall
from competing at the levels that they did deep into
the playoffs, winning championships still extremely extremely lucrative.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
All right, let's go to smoke with the best audio
in sports. What did you say?
Speaker 7 (06:16):
You?
Speaker 4 (06:16):
What?
Speaker 8 (06:17):
What did you say?
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Wait a minute?
Speaker 9 (06:20):
So may right, what.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
I mean by that is.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Well bunting, Bunting greater than Belichick who gave him that name,
says Will LaMelo and Brandon ever be healthy.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
That might have been me because he was more onto
John Bunting. Oh is that what that was you? Okay?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Oh, I get it. Yeah, more John Bunting is better
than Belichick.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
I haven't seen any updates for tomorrow night. I think
the injury report probably comes out in a little bit.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Five o'clock around that time yet. Yeah, yeah, and we'll.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Find out more maybe LaMelo tomorrow night, but I'm not
sure about that. I hope I was more hopeful two
days ago. All right, what you got over there?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
All right, well we start.
Speaker 10 (06:54):
We have to Charlotte Hornets as last night was a
very big night for one Ryan called prinder to rookie
from Brighton had a perfect game from the field, and
oh you know, he just became a dad forty eight
hours ago, twenty four hours before the game, and he
talked last night afterwards about how hectic the last couple
of days have been for the rookie.
Speaker 8 (07:14):
I mean, obviously, first poring child, you don't know what
you're getting yourself into it. So I was just taking
it minute by minute, and I wasn't even the one
doing any of the work. So my wife did a
great job I'm glad I was able to be there
and support her. And you know, she loves watching games,
so she kind of was like, and I think you
should play tonight and give me a good distraction to
watch the game. So yeah, it's been a crazy twenty
(07:38):
four or thirty hours whatever it's been, but definitely the
best couple of days of my life. Welcome and my
little girl.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Twenty three years old.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Twenty three years old Ryan Kalchprinter Like, we talk about
him as being this, you know, older rookie, and he
is right, four time Big East Defensive Player of the Year,
comes in as a grown man, but he's still twenty
three and so like, on the one hand, we talk
about these guys being young, they're rookies, they're learning in
the NBA, they're kind of babies in the NBA world,
But he's also just welcomed a baby into the world,
(08:09):
so you know what an interesting place for him to be. Also,
last night was proof that daddy muscles are a real thing.
They are you laugh, you smile, but it's true. Daddy
mussels are a very real thing. And Ryan Kalchbrener learned
that last night. There's a great line and I don't
have it memorized from you know, Matthew McConaughey's Green Lights
autobiography that I read a couple of years ago, but
it talks about how becoming a dad, you know, what
(08:32):
it does to you as a man, right and how
it ignites this drive in you to provide, to be
a role model, to protect, to be successful. Especially, was
kind of the core of what he was talking about.
And I think that's what we saw from Ryan Kckprinner
last night. It was really cool. I love watching that stuff.
You know, it's always cool to watch guys. We hear
they're welcoming their first child into the world as pro athletes,
(08:52):
and then they go out and give some great performance
almost dedicated to their newborn, in his case, a daughter.
I just thought that was so cool last night. I
love one that stuff. But daddy muscles very real thing.
You get stronger when the kids shows up.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Hopefully that day will come for me. All right, there
we go, All right, what else you got? All right? Well?
Moving over to the Carolina Panthers ear.
Speaker 10 (09:12):
Speaking of rookies, Nick Gorton caused a lot of headway
when he was talking about how the team wasn't prepared
for the game against New Orleans and how they fell flat.
And yesterday Dave Canalis was asked about Nick Gorton's comments
on Monday.
Speaker 11 (09:25):
Just about the comments and all that stuff. I think
it's a it's an opportunity, it's a learning opportunity to say, okay,
you know, for us, for our guys, like you know,
speak for your own performance if you want to make
a general comment, you know about hey, when we lose,
we're upset, we're disappointed, you know, But the specific part
of it, like that we can do a better job
of just keeping those things within us, you know, and
the stuff that we talk about after the game on
(09:47):
Monday and all those things.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah, I mean, I don't I don't have a ton
left to add about this one. To me, it was
all pretty simple, honestly. Like I just told you, I
knew that the Vets wouldn't like that, they wouldn't want
the speaking out. A couple of you know, veteran guys
already had. And I think it was the part about
his I don't know exactly what he said, but it
was like, guys forgot what it's like to be in
the NFL. And then he very quickly caught himself and
(10:12):
it was like, I haven't been here very long. It's like, yeah,
but you said it, and you've only been here for
ten games. And that's that's the point that they're gonna
make to you, is that you might be right, but
you did just get here and so who were you
to talk that way? But it's again, it's funny because
the listeners were getting a lot of well what did
he say that was wrong? Everything he said was true?
(10:33):
Well I hate that mentality, and it's like, yeah, but
that's kind of how things work. Like if you if
you worked in a simple or if you worked in
a successful business and you've been at it for twenty
years and you you're in your late thirties early forties,
and you're in a leadership position and some hot, some
hot shot twenty two year old, twenty three year old
fresh out of college. You know, he might be talented
and might be a great hire, but you don't want
(10:54):
that guy speaking on your behalf in public.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Not yet.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
You haven't been around long enough to know what you're
talking about. You can step in it, you can make
people look bad. So that's what it boiled down to.
Even if what he was saying was the truth. They
didn't want him to be the messenger. What else you got?
Speaker 4 (11:05):
All Right?
Speaker 10 (11:06):
Well, in New York it's been to theenth of week
already for the Giants with the firing of Brian day
Ball and deconcussion of Jackson Darts and they're not going
back to Russell Wilson at quarterback.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
So that means it's Jamis time.
Speaker 10 (11:20):
And let's just say Jamis is extremely excited to be
back playing quarterback in the NFL.
Speaker 7 (11:26):
He wants fans to know about I want fans to
know that I'm gonna do my best.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
You know.
Speaker 7 (11:31):
Obviously I'm gonna have fun, but I'm gonna execute, have.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
A surgical execution and just and just play ball, man, Like.
Speaker 7 (11:39):
This is something I've been doing since I've been four
years old, and I just get to do it in
the greatest city in the world. I'm gonna be saying
to what, my son, it's the greatest city in the world. Yeah,
that's a Hamilton reference. If y'all I don't know a
ten year reunion.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
Yeah, I love him. I love him, and you you
brought up to me.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
You're still on the jail trained, You're still trying to
get him to Carolina or as a backup?
Speaker 12 (12:03):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Is it because you think he can help the team
or because you just want to be able to play
his soundbites every day?
Speaker 4 (12:08):
Yes?
Speaker 10 (12:10):
Well honestly yeah, because look, he won a couple of
games in Cleveland last year as a backup.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
He's on a two year contract in New York. Damn it.
He's signed a two year, eight million dollar contract.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Why he just did like five of it was guaranteed,
and I don't know, I don't know what his cap
hit would be next year. You could, in theory, trade
for him if you really wanted veteran competition for Bryce Jowan.
But do you like what do you think he's got
left to give? He's not an old man, So I'm
not trying to be not trying to act like Jamis
is over the hill. His days is a full time
(12:39):
starter and expecting like he The problem was is he's.
Speaker 10 (12:42):
Thirty one, by the way, thirty one years old. The
problem was in Tampa. You know, he had a lot
of great performances, but he also had those performances and
he could never be consistent enough to get the Buccaneers
at I.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Watched him hand the Panthers a game in London. I
was gonna say which game did he hand the Panthers
because there's multiple.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Yeah, but would he throw three interceptions in that game? Yeah?
Like the first play I think was a pick six
to Luke Keigley.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, So I mean I watched him
hand the Panthers that game in London at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium.
He's thirty one, so like he's in theory, got some
good football left in him? Is there's still time for
the kind of Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones situation
for Jameis Winston.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
What do we think?
Speaker 10 (13:19):
Probably not? No, At best, you're getting a Gino Smith.
But right now, Raiders fans hate Geno Smith and they
think he's a war criminal.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
They Yeah, I think they're more mad at Pete Carroll
for that, which I don't think we've talked much about that.
How long is that Pete Carroll deal last in Vegas?
Speaker 10 (13:38):
Well, he's older than Bill, so that's not good. But uh,
I don't know. This honestly kind of feels like a
Tom Flores in Seattle situation.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Yes, yes, like they're two and seven and they're not
good at anything. They're not good, and they're not discernibly
good at any part of football except for Brock Powers
doing whatever. Oh that guy is unbelievable. I mean, yeah, unbelievable.
So I you know, I just wondered, like, Jamis still
has a strong arm, right, yes, no, no doubt, He's
(14:08):
still pretty athletic.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
So what's stopping James? Okay?
Speaker 3 (14:12):
But what's stopping Jamis from being I don't know the
best version of himself at thirty one, or he just
is who he is in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
He is who he is.
Speaker 10 (14:20):
That's he's his own strength and his own worst enemy
at the same time, don't I don't disagree with you.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
I just wanted to know if you thought there was
some chance for him to have some you know, late
bloomer breakout. I'm going to be a franchise guy for
three or four years at the end of my career.
Speaker 10 (14:33):
But watch the Giants beat the Packers this weekend. Just
because James is starting seven.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Oh four numbers said he thought Bruce arians was black?
Is that a real thing? Did I forget something? Did
I memory hold that? If it is true, Jamim m
Kango had and I could see how you could get
to get confused. I mean, Bruce arians is a pretty
soulful guy. Did he really think that wouldn't be shocked
becuse I wouldn't have the fact that I'm asking if
it's true indicates that it's very possible.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
Jamis said that or that? What else you got? All right?
Speaker 10 (15:01):
Well we end with a legend here in this area.
Ward Burton Ward Burn for those who don't know, is
a former NASCAR driver, former winner of the Southern five
hundred and d Daytona five hundred. But now he has
his own podcast with his son talking about wilderness because
that's what he does. And he listened to some comments
from a comedian, Travis Stevenson, talking about how Ward helped
(15:24):
him get through life.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
There was this guy who.
Speaker 13 (15:26):
Used to do radio commercials in our town and he
couldn't say his ours. And as a kid who couldn't
say his ours, I love that.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
I looked up to that man.
Speaker 11 (15:34):
He was like my role model.
Speaker 6 (15:35):
I really got behind him.
Speaker 13 (15:36):
Dude, his name was Ward Burton.
Speaker 4 (15:41):
That's a problem. Got a lot of the letters he
can't say. Just write his name.
Speaker 12 (15:46):
You know.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Life would have been easier if.
Speaker 13 (15:48):
His parents just called him Steve, like hi, I'm Steve
Smith and today I'll be in the Pepsi five call. See,
he got all the way through the sins before we
realized there was a problem.
Speaker 6 (15:59):
Not all ward.
Speaker 13 (16:00):
He lets you know he's stump straight out to the game.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
I wo, he wont off a caterpillar? You drive au.
Speaker 7 (16:09):
Making a catch?
Speaker 13 (16:13):
Isn't that neat? You couldn't say his rs, but they
still forced him to do ad reads.
Speaker 9 (16:21):
Still getting for now?
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Do you wack wed wofing.
Speaker 6 (16:27):
Way?
Speaker 4 (16:27):
Do you try a woody Tuesday? Bud him cheese? Burger's
Wi away? Inquedible?
Speaker 13 (16:34):
Do you apologize if if somebody.
Speaker 4 (16:36):
Else here you never heard that?
Speaker 9 (16:37):
No, I've never heard that, but it's true. I mean
it's true. So uh when they do the hearing uh
conders test, I can't hear some rs, and I can't
hear some other.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
Vowels, particularly high pitch.
Speaker 9 (16:55):
And most of it was from shooting shotguns compatibly with
my grandagro going up and be around race card.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
But he'd exactly right.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Everything about it was hilarious, and Smoke showed me this
before the show. And then you get to the end
right there and I lost it, and he's like, it's
mostly because of all the shotguns I shot with my
grandpa being around race cars at what age was this?
First of all, I just imagine him standing next to
Grandpa while he's firing off multiple twelve Gays rounds and
it's just you know, blowing little Wood's ears off. And
then like, at what point in his life was he
(17:30):
standing around race cars with no headgear on? I just
I love Ward Burton. I always have smoke knows this.
He's one of my favorite people alive. If you don't
follow him on social media, you really should because half
his videos are him just walking around random places flipping
over rocks looking for snakes.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
I mean that's what he does. He carries like this
is a safe snike, this is a safe fire, It's
a non venomous snake. See what it does is day
some days and days.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Half of that man's content is literally just walking through
fields and in the woods, flipping stuff over and grabbing
snakes by the back of the neck and looking into
the camera and telling.
Speaker 4 (18:04):
Us whether or not they'll kill you, And you know,
the thing is up.
Speaker 10 (18:06):
Until he had a TV career, I didn't realize how
much how southern Jeff Burton sounded until he was away
from Ward and then you're like, oh, yeah, Jeff Burton
actually grew up in Virginia too. Yeah, the same house
down in South Boston. But like as he used to say,
he grew up in the south side of the house.
Ward dead is and Jeff Burton grew up in the
north side of the in both the country in their
own way. All right, that's what did you say? The
(18:27):
best audio in the world of sports. When we return,
Willie PE's back, we'll talk about big, big soccer news
on the end of Charlotte FC season. Unfortunately, we'll talk
some Panthers and Hornets as well. Sports Radio ninety two
to seven wfn Z ninety two seven wfn Z KB
(19:02):
and Smoke having a real good time on a Thursday.
We've got the Orlando led Beetter Award winning beat reporter
covering the Atlanta Falcons for the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He's
back in just under an hour at five twenty five.
He's a whole bundle of energy and a lot of fun,
So stick around for that. A lot of good stuff
on the FanDuel text line. Willie p coming up in
just a moment. We are waiting for him to connect
(19:22):
from his home studio, and once he does, we'll bring
him on. But let me squeeze in Matt from Greensboro
while we wait. Matt, what's going on, buddy?
Speaker 4 (19:29):
How are you?
Speaker 12 (19:30):
Hey?
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Guys?
Speaker 12 (19:31):
And happy birthday, k B.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
Welcome to the forty Thanks Buddy.
Speaker 12 (19:37):
The Hornets. I'm loving these rookies. I think the guys
in the second round Cock Printer see I have really
been surprising, especially talk printer more. He's actually looks like
we have a legitimate center rotation with what he's doing.
I know, I hate to say if that's always the
if of the injuries and the help of the team,
(20:00):
but optimistically, give these injuries get out in the way
and they're mostly healthy, say we get you know, fifty
games together from Flamelo had to Brandon. Does that change
your outlooks for what the possibility of the scene could
be first where where they can finish given what this
(20:21):
Brookie class is like, Because I mean, if we get
those guys back, get Grant back, gets you screams, I mean,
we might have the best second.
Speaker 6 (20:29):
Unit in the week.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
So you're talking maybe like uh, because I don't expect
Brandon back before Thanksgiving.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
Personally, that could change.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I don't know, but you're thinking along the lines of
what you get them both back around Thanksgiving together and
they largely stay healthy the rest of the year. I
don't know. I mean, the over under with them was
twenty six and a half wins. I always thought of
healthy they could win thirty thirty four to thirty five
somewhere in there. But I don't know that I could
go much beyond that right now. But right now, I'm
(20:57):
just really heartened by the fact that they brought in
some rookies that are already making a real impact, and
it looks like this organization can evaluate talent.
Speaker 12 (21:05):
Yeah, that's for sure. It looks great for the future,
even if they figure out a way to move on
from front from the Mellow, which I'm kind of done with.
But yeah, I'm almost just hoping he gets healthy enough
that they can trade him.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Okay, all right, I hear you, Thank you, Matt. I
appreciate the phone call. I mean, that's possible. I've seen
a lot of people since he missed the first couple
of games. I think by game three there were some
people saying, just play him and sell him, play him
and trade him, you know, play him and you know,
move him. Well, I don't think it's that simple. I
don't personally, and I understand people saying, well, you got
to move on because there's only going to be diminishing
value moving forward and if you can't stay healthy. That's
(21:39):
that's technically true, but it's got to be hard in
the front office to think about that because of you've
already extended him, and with the money that he's making,
somebody will take a chance on him if you do
get to the point where you want to move him.
But you're still looking at you know what, eighty cents
on the dollar, five cents on the dollar at best
(22:01):
if he stays in and out of the lineup.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
We'll come back to it. This might come up right now.
We got to welcome in and welcome back Willie p
will Pologic, Voice of Charlotte FC wfn Z host reporter.
He's back with us for a Thursday conversation. Will Pologic,
How are.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
You nothing going on at all? KB? It's going on muchow.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Well, you and I have been texting, so let's get
right into it. I saw the Tom Bogert tweet that
you sent me. We had Tom on last week Major
League Soccer owners have voted and passed a schedule change.
The league will now run from late summer months through May,
and it's due to start in the summer of twenty
twenty seven. MLS will take the winter break in January
(22:39):
and February. So this I think we talked about this
about a year ago, seemed possible, then didn't happen. Now
it's happening, and I would just love big picture of
your perspective on why they're doing this and what this
means from Major League Soccer.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
The complicated first off, KB, they went about two years
into this kind of discovery process to try and figure
out what's the best way to elevate this product and
elevate this league because there are a lot of people
who are wanted to make sure that Lionel Messi's entrance
(23:15):
into this league does not go without at least benefiting
other teams not named Inter Miami. And what they've come
to find is that when it comes to the way
the by windows are structured, the most lucrative by window
and sell window for worldwide soccer happens in the summer,
usually when the European leagues are in their off season
(23:39):
and aligning that off season with MLS was always going
to be a priority for MLS ownership in order to
try to align that, because trying to get top quality
players to come in the middle of an MLS season
was always a harder sell on talent than it was
doing so in a normal fashion, So that part of
(24:02):
it was kind of the paramount part. The second wrinkle
is MLS does not like the fact that it's major
playoff and MLS Cup games go immediately opposite the NFL
and the very big brunt of the college football schedule.
The MLS Cup right now takes place on College Football
Championship weekend. For example, if Charlotte UGHC one of the
(24:23):
host MLS Cup, they'd have a real hard time kicking
the ACC Championship out of Bank of America Stadium in
order to do that, so they'd be in a situation
where they'd have to basically play it at an alternate site,
which nobody wants. So from that perspective, that takes away
that very big, big possibility of happening, and at least
that very very big conflict. It takes those games and
(24:44):
puts them in an area where the sports calendar is
not as cluttered with something as j gynormos as football.
There is still going to be some overlap with the
NFL in college football, but with the way the schedule
shift happens, it's going to start in mid July go
until nov. So it really is kind of the same,
the same footprint and overlay, so to speak, as it
(25:05):
is now. But then they will shift it obviously into
the spring for the real run up to the playoffs.
It'll be a better run up for the playoffs than
they have currently. And I think also they're going to
try everything they possibly can to avoid the northern teams
from having to play games with punitive weather conditions. They
had something in the MLS release that said they will
(25:26):
not play more than three games away from home at
a time, so there might again be a long road
trip for like the Minnesota's and the New Englands of
the world. In terms of that, maybe in February, maybe
we play a little bit more in those northern markets,
say at mid July and August, but at the same
point in time, aligning the buy windows, getting the playoffs
away from football, and another thing too that I think
(25:48):
annoys a lot of people who come to this league
from outside of America is a lot of times they've
had to play during international windows. Having the international windows
lined up now will allow them to take off during
those times so that you're not having to play games
with a less than full roster. It's a win win
win for everybody in MLS. I know people are very
(26:10):
resistant to change, but I think it's something that will
elevate the league and also the most important part of it,
get a higher level of player to this league, which
of course increases exposure increases quality.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Yeah, listen, I think all the reasons you just listed
make perfect sense. I'm no expert here, I'm certainly no authority,
but I think it all makes sense. I told you earlier.
I'm very interested in the logistics of it. We brought
this up yesterday. So just when the time comes, all right,
they're gonna play the twenty twenty sixth season status quo
before they make the switch in twenty twenty seven, how
do they handle that?
Speaker 1 (26:41):
Like?
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Are you rolling in from one full season into the
next full season? Like how do you make that transition?
Speaker 1 (26:48):
So I'm glad you asked, and that answer was not
clear to me until we just got the release from NLS.
What they're gonna do is they're gonna play what's called
position season in the spring of twenty twenty seven. It'll
be fourteen game season. They're gonna have playoffs, they're gonna
have basically the whole bit of it. It's gonna again
probably be a season kind of like with an asterisk
(27:08):
around it, kind of like what we had during the
COVID times. MLS did something kind of similar with this
MLS's back tournament during the COVID year of twenty twenty,
so it might kind of have a fugazy element to it,
but it's better than just taking the whole four or
five months off and losing momentum. So I think they'll
try to do something that's a makeshift season during that
(27:31):
period of time that leads up until May, just to
kind of get everything aligned, and then they'll play the
true twenty seven to twenty eight MLS season beginning in
mid July of twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Okay, all right, now, there was more big news today,
and we can feel free to bring us back to
this if there's something that you feel needs to be
added in. But also news today from paulton Orio that
Major League Soccer will come out from behind the separate
MLS season pass subscription beginning next season, and that all
games will be available on the Apple TV streaming service.
You know, I've had a really, I don't know, call
(28:04):
it a peculiar situation. Every time I've turned you on
on Apple TV, which has been many times, it just
plays and I don't pay for the subscription, so I
don't know why I'm getting you every single time. I
always thought it was maybe a questionable idea to put
that behind a separate paywall. I'm glad to hear they're
coming out from behind it. Why are they doing this now.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Well, I think part of the reason is Apple has
just acquired more properties. F one obviously had a very
very celebrated move to Apple here at the end of
the F one season. They obviously have gotten the big
baseball package as well, and one of the things that
they came to find was that the separate subscription was
limiting their viewership. And I think it's something that I've
(28:45):
said was my biggest gripe with the service. If I'm
allowed to have a gripe and leave me, I've voiced
it publicly and privately over the course of the last
couple of years. Is that I think if you just
if you subscribe to Apple TV, like if you can
watch Ted Lasso in the morning show, you should be
able to watch MLS. Not too dissimilar to the way
that if you subscribe to Peacock for the office in
parks and rec you can watch.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
The Premier League.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
I also find that I also find it very interesting
KB and I found this out literally just today, that
there's actually an Apple and Peacock bundle that combines the
two services for I think fourteen nine nine a month,
So you can get your Premier League Soccer, you can
get your MLS soccer, you can get your F one,
you can get your Michael Scott on, your Leslie Nophon
(29:29):
and Ted Lasso on all in one subscription and you
only got to pay one piper. So again, this move
makes a ton of sense for MLS. I know the
people whoill come to me and say, why is it
not on regular TV? And I understand that that's always
going to be a gripe. I can just tell you
that in the year of our Lord twenty twenty five,
(29:49):
streaming is the future. This is kind of the way
that a lot of these leagues are trying to at
least develop themselves. I think the one thing that I
keep saying to people, because we didn't really.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
Have a long.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
A long wave when we were basically had one season
of basically the old way, I can tell you that
the old way was not good for a lot of
people because it had the same problems that people have
when it comes to things like Fandel, Sports Network, Ballely,
things of that nature. You know, we had similar carriage
issues and disputes when it comes to people who are
trying to get it either over the top or not
(30:22):
have cable and things of that nature. This is at
least a way that says, Okay, these are in one place.
There's no blackouts, there's no separate subscription. It's a very
very simple thing. Subscribe to Apple, you get MLS, and
you get everything else that Apple offers.
Speaker 4 (30:37):
It's a win win for the league.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
I totally agreed. All Right, we haven't talked about this
since it happened, but five days ago the season ended,
the series ended.
Speaker 4 (30:45):
I was watching.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
I guess it was six days ago, but I was
watching and saw the extra time goal, and I could
hear the pain in your voice. And my son even
picked up on he Sai Daddy, he sounds sad, and
I said, he is sad because it's you know, it's
been a fun season and it's over, not the way
that they wanted to go out, that you wanted to
go out. What are your thoughts now, kind of you know,
after it's all done, how do you feel about the year?
Speaker 1 (31:06):
We know the weirdest thing KB is that it felt
different and I heard Ashley West would even say it
when he spoke on Wednesday, that it felt different than
last year because it felt like they had maybe turned
a corner, particularly with the way that they'd looked during
the regular season. But it was a season that honestly
had a lot of peaks and valleys.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
It was a roller coaster.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
You had, you know, the great start that they had,
they got in the first place, and then you hit
May and June and they have the swoon that they had.
You get back, you get a nine game win streak,
you have a little bit of a wonky lead up
to the finish, and then the playoff series that was
incredibly uneven. It just seemed like consistency was definitely a
moving target for this squad, and I think a lot
of that had to do with injuries, but A lot
(31:45):
of it also had to do with the fact that
I just think that they did not have enough consistent
quality when it came to the roster, and it's something
that zarn Karnetta and Dean Smith will have to address
her in the off season. Obviously, the biggest thing is
Dilson Molanda's departure. Who ends up stepping into that place
this is an outside solution or somebody internally. And also
I thought it it was very very telling that Dean Smith,
(32:06):
in a game that Charlotte needed to have in Game
two of the postseason, only went to one player off
his bench, which tells me that he needs to have
more players on his roster that he trusts. I think
he loves the guys he has in the starting eleven
when it's fully healthy, with pet bl wilfrid Zaha, Dan Teklamani, etc.
But I think there needs to be more quality creativity
(32:27):
off the bench. It's a hard thing to do in
this league because of the salary restrictions and things of
that nature. But making the right interleague moves, making the
right homegrown type moves and things of that nature, and
try to elevate and create some more workable depth those
are what separates the teams that have nice regular seasons
and the teams that win MLS Cup.
Speaker 3 (32:48):
Breaking news real quickily, I got to hit a break.
I know, you know how these things work, but I'm
seeing breaking news that Charlotte FC has recently appointed former
Reading and Leeds manager Brian McDermott as club consultant, announced
his new So what does that entail?
Speaker 4 (33:01):
How important is that.
Speaker 1 (33:02):
It's a guy who wnestly brings a lot of experience
European wise. I actually was talking about this with my
old Kyle league Jessica Charman, because, as you know, Reading
is the squad that she used to support. He's an
incredible manager and resource. I kind of got into this
a little bit a couple of weeks ago when I
heard Zarknetta kind of first bringing this up. He's just
(33:24):
another voice in the room to kind of give them more.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
Of that bridge between Europe to Charlotte.
Speaker 1 (33:31):
See, one of the things that people don't understand, at
least worldwide, is that Charlotte's not a recognizable city for
the Europeans necessarily. But putting somebody attached to this brand,
attached to this group, we'll bring some additional credibility. Dean
Smith obviously brought a lot of that. Zaha Furthered a
lot of that, as did Ashley Westwood. This is just
another name to kind of attach to the brand that says, oh,
(33:53):
if he's there, it must mean something that's good. So
it's a It's another name that at least allows Charlotte
of C to recruit fashion.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Further legitimizes the club. I get it, all right, buddy, listen,
I appreciate you. We could go all day, but we'll
do it again very soon. Thank you for the time, man.
Speaker 4 (34:08):
Thank you. Pal. There you go.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Willie Pete will polochiic voice of Charlotte FC our Willie

seven ninety six to ten. Hit us up on the
FanDuel text line. Right now we go to smoke on
the headlines.
Speaker 10 (34:22):
All right, this is now time for a Neogenics college
football injury report, brought to you by Neogenics, where all
you have to lose, Kyle is the pain.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
Thank it.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
I just got a DM from a listener on Instagram
asking about Neogenics. I won't say this person's name, but
I literally just had a listener message me about neogenics.
Speaker 4 (34:40):
How cool is that? Go ahead?
Speaker 10 (34:41):
Well, no matter what happens at the end of the year,
I think Chandler Morris needs to go to neogenics because
he's been battling.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
A lot of pain.
Speaker 10 (34:46):
But according to Jerry Ratcliffe a couple of other names,
While it's not been made official yet, signs are pointing
to the star quarterback four to who's playing on Saturday
named Big ACC game against Duke Wallace Wade Stadium. While
not made official, he has been practicing. According to offensive
coordinator Desk Kitchings and star linebacker Cam Robinson also hinted
(35:09):
that Morris would be ready to go for Saturday's game
against the Blue Devils.
Speaker 4 (35:13):
Who do you have? I mean you're gonna I don't.
I'm not gonna ask you that you're well. I'll be
honest with you.
Speaker 10 (35:17):
I don't know what to expect because every time Dukes
have been in a game like this, I know they
shoot themselves in the foot, even though they outplayed Georgia Tech.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
But at the same time, it feels like Virginia's like
literally limping down the stretch like they've run out of
you know, run out of good luck, I.
Speaker 10 (35:31):
Mean shoulder injury, yeah for Morris and into concussion.
Speaker 4 (35:35):
So yeah, it just doesn't I don't know.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
Maybe they got some more magic left, but it just
feels like they're limping to the finish. All right, we'll
come back, we'll tell you who balled out again? Stick

Speaker 4 (36:45):
Smoke would you bring for the people?
Speaker 10 (36:46):
Well, I gotta go to Southendo, Indiana, where history was
made last night with Notre Dame fighting Irish women's basketball
player Hannah Hildalgo forty four points.
Speaker 4 (36:55):
That's that's that's a Notre Dame.
Speaker 10 (36:57):
Record that's pretty impressive considering people like Skylar Diggins has
played in South End.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
But that's not the most incredible part.
Speaker 10 (37:05):
She had an NCAA record sixteen steals in one game
Kyle as Notre Dame was able to win eighty five
to fifty eight.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
How do you collect six I mean, I've seen the highlights,
but sixteen steals in a game. I've been around basketball
for a long time. I've never seen that.
Speaker 10 (37:25):
Getting like five or six steals in a game is
considered elite.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Yeah, sixteen, Like that's what happens when you're playing, Like,
I don't know people three four years younger than you
as a kid.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
How does that even happen in a basketball game? Well,
he definitely zipped up. Akron Wow.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
I saw her interview on Sports Center this morning too.
By the way, very cool. I gotta go Ryan Kalkbrenner.
This one's easy. The rookie who became a dad yesterday.
His wife delivered their newborn baby girl into the world,
and mama told him go play some basketball. It'd be
a nice distraction. So he did, and he did it well.
Eight for eight from the field, seventeen points, nine rebounds,
(38:01):
and not just scoring controlling the paint. He gave Charlotte
the kind of size and presence that that they've been
missing for years.
Speaker 4 (38:08):
And I got to tell you, you know.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
For all this talk about and I was one of
them going into the year saying, you know, I really
want to be excited about this Hornets team. And this
was pre injuries of course to LaMelo and to Brandon Miller.
But I don't know, man, it's the five spot with
this team, Like do they have enough? Are they going
to be able to so on and so forth? And listen,
they're only four and seven, but between Ryan Kalchbrenner and
Mussa dia Bat, I think they've got what they need
(38:33):
at five for the here and now. And it's been really,
really fun to watch Ryan Kalchbrenner bawling out seven oh four, five,
seven oh ninety six ten. I'm trying to find a smoke.
What was the stat about his all time field goal percentage.
We've had some doozies in the last couple of days
in terms of like all time stats, but Ryan Kochbrenner,
I want to say, like eighty three and a half
percent from the field to start his careers out right.
Speaker 4 (38:55):
Yeah, here it is right here, Kyle.
Speaker 10 (38:56):
So through eleven games, just according to Richie Randall, that's
why it to you.
Speaker 4 (39:00):
There you go.
Speaker 10 (39:01):
Ryan Kauprener has made eighty three point three percent of
his shots among rookies since nineteen seventy five, so that's
fifty years. This ranks number one all time minimum fifty
field goals attempted. He uh topped Derek Lively, who was
forty three to fifty nine through his first ten games
in twenty twenty three, and yal Ming, who was forty
(39:23):
three and sixty one in his first two games. The
differences both of those two guys were lottery picks.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
Cak was a second round pick.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Dang, that's pretty good. I mean he's just he is
exceeded by expectations. Obviously, Ryan, or rather kan Ka Nipple
has two. But you know, Ryan Kalchbrenner, I mean exceeding
expectations to start the year. And again, I love his
answer to the question last night. You know, somebody asked
him about imposing his will on that game, and he
was like, I don't know if I imposed my will,
I just I take easy shots. I would call them
(39:54):
high percentage. But yeah, yeah, that's pretty accurate. Now, a
couple things I want to get to here. Some text
a lot of texts that came in during the Willie
p conversation. There was somebody who said, why didn't you
bring up Coach Joe's call about the chicken and the waffles. Well,
I don't know how that would have fell and fit
into the conversation, but I did want to note Smoke
that I think chicken and waffles has to be on
(40:15):
the mount rushmore of food offerings that sound better than
they are. Have you ever had great chicken and waffles?
Have you ever experienced truly great chicken and waffles? Because
I have not, Like it's one of those things that
sounds phenomenal, but then you go eat it and it
seems to me it's always underwhelming. Now I say that,
(40:36):
and I've never been to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles out
in LA like me, and I think me and West
talked about it last time we were out there last summer.
Never actually did it. But if I was creating a
mount rushmore of the most disappointing foods that are like
notable or that people talk about, like Matt chicken and waffles,
I'm like, man, that sounds amazing, but everywhere I get
chicken and waffles, it's never really all that good.
Speaker 4 (40:56):
It's just meh.
Speaker 10 (40:57):
Well, it's funny you mentioned that because big news this
week Chick fil A. Oh so, they're testing a new
chicken and waffle sandwich in select locations.
Speaker 3 (41:05):
Unfortunately, with chicken and waffle fries, they're known for waffle fries.
Speaker 4 (41:08):
No, no, we're talking chicken and waffle sandwich.
Speaker 3 (41:10):
Hold on, now, we're talking about a Chick fil A
like chicken patty sandwich between two waffles.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
So yes.
Speaker 10 (41:17):
The sandwich features a crispy Chicken fil A with maple
waffles and is available in original or spicy, with a
breakfast sized version in San Antonio and both breakfast and
lunch and dinner versions in Baltimore.
Speaker 4 (41:30):
Those are two cities.
Speaker 10 (41:31):
Yeah, so the two cities that are getting it is Baltimore,
Maryland and San Antonio, Texas. And a lot of people
were pointing out all the big old women of San
Antonio is gonna be loving this.
Speaker 3 (41:40):
Yeah yeah, yeah, eight oh three number telling me preach
this truth. Chicken and waffles is so overrated. Dre from
VA told me that Roscoe's is overrated. I'm just telling
if I were to create a mount rushmore of the
most overrated foods, I don't even know. Like I think
we've had this conversation around regional foods, like you know
the cheese steak goor what's that nasty slop they make
(42:02):
in Cincinnati Skyline Chili? Skyline Chili, Like we've had it
in those terms and prophetic Jay's like KB chicken.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
And waffles is fire. But where are you eating it? Man?
Speaker 3 (42:12):
Again, I've tried it a handful of places. It's just
one of those things. I love chicken, I love waffles.
I like maple syrup. But anytime anybody makes it for
me at a restaurant, it's just the chicken's too tough.
Speaker 4 (42:24):
I don't know if the balance is off.
Speaker 3 (42:25):
I have never in my life and I have never
sat down and had chicken and waffles and thought, man,
that was phenomenal.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
It's always over right.
Speaker 10 (42:32):
So one of those things were like two or three
good things doesn't make a good thing when you put
it together right. So, like I'll say this in the
spirit of the movie Elf. Always wanted to have spaghetti
with maple syrup. I did that as a kid.
Speaker 4 (42:46):
That you tried as a kid. I mean that honestly
sounds gross.
Speaker 10 (42:49):
But actually wasn't half bad. Can't have the meatballs in it,
but you can have it just with syrup.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
Okay. I wouldn't recommend it to have it like every
single day or.
Speaker 10 (42:57):
But like if you have it one time, it's like, eh,
that's okay, it's pretty nice.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Man.
Speaker 10 (43:01):
Yeah, but you think that sounds great, but then when
you combine them together, it just doesn't have the right
concoction of taste that hits your butt taste buds.
Speaker 3 (43:08):
Yeah, I mean seven or four numbers, says, just give
me a couple of three biscuits.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
KB. I just I feel the same way. I'll eat.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
I love chicken, I love waffles, but whenever you put
them together, they're just massively, massively overrated. Now, I do
have a few people inviting me to their mama's house
to come try theirs a couple of cookout invitations. Dra
from VA says he nails it. Usually the chicken is
really good or the waffle, and then he says, maybe
once we're both were hitting, that's it. Like that, they're never,
in my experience, both good at the same time. Chicken
(43:35):
and waffles to me, has been the most overrated attempt
to try something that sounds phenomenal. It's like the Philly
cheese steak for me too. Like I go to Philly,
I get a cheese steak, and I'm like, this is fine.
It's not special, It's just fine. That's what it is.
I'm open to somebody else who'se Mama makes great chicken
and waffles. I've just never seen it done really well.
All right, our number three. Next, we'll take some phone calls.
I want to get back to Panthers and Falcons on Sunday,
(43:56):
and we do that with the Orlando Ledbetter of the
Atlanta Journal. Cost tuition in twenty seven minutes. Stick Around
Sports Radio ninety two seven wf Z
