to knock off the Bucks for the second straight time.
Although there's a little slight twist of this one, Giannis
is actually gonna play it looks like so. The good
news is LaMelo will too. So can they cancel one
(00:46):
another out? We shall see. Can con Ka Nipple stay
on a tear to start his NBA career. Eight o'clock
tip from the five Serve Forum. Pregame here at seven,
Join me in, Travis t Bone Hancock. It's night one

host the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow night at the Spectrum Center.
Panthers Falcons on Sunday, a whole lot of college football
(01:07):
and we have the continuation of the high school football
playoffs tonight here in the state of North Carolina, and
we welcome in and Welcome back Nate Wemberley of WBTV
Sports Director, Sports anchor. He's back for his Friday appearance.
What's going on, brother? How are you yo?
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Yo?
Speaker 2 (01:20):
What's going on? What's going on?
Speaker 4 (01:21):
Before we get started, I want to give a shout
out to the JOSU State Smith Golden Bulls. They will
be playing in Durham tomorrow to SEEAA Championship game. Their
first appearance in the championship game since nineteen seventy two.
They won it in sixty nine, so it's been fifty
three years since they played for title. So congratulations Tomorrow's
flowers and the guys, and a lot of those guys
(01:41):
they recruit within ninety minutes of the city, so a
lot of the guys on our team played and showed up.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
On Friday nights, on football Friday Night.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
So it was just good to see them doing well
and playing for a championship tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
No doubt about it. I do need to point out
we have a guy on the text line called Sports
Guys Shows. I'm pretty sure that Shakid right. He doesn't
think that Nate should be in studio this week, and
he's texted me this throughout the course of the show
like a thousand times. He's like, you had a Falcons
guest on yesterday, Do you have to bring Nate in today?
(02:13):
All right, Shaqed just again, I see you, all right,
But I bring that up because also the very next
text from Bag of Donut says, tell Nate that his
segment last week was spot on exactly. His real concern
about how the Panthers would show up against the Saints
ended up being the reality they were rising high from
a win they should have never had, and they weren't
too far away from playing really bad football the previous
(02:34):
two weeks. Now, I don't know if you said it
exactly like that.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
He's give me a little bit more credit, But I
told you how it could possibly play out.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
I say it.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
I love the position that this team was in because
teams were going to start to take Rico out the game,
and this franchise and this fan base needs to see
Bryce be able to throw this team to victories last
week that didn't show up, and you're gonna see if
it's a copycat lead. Everybody's going to try and take
Rico out in the game. Now, I don't think the
Falcons gonna be able to do it. Because their rush
defense is just got awful. But everybody else is gonna
(03:04):
try and take Rico out the game, and Bryce has
to show that he can do it.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
He's got seven more games to do it. Will he
do it? Who knows.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
We're about to find out, though, because nobody the teams
are not just gonna let and especially the teams like
the Rams, the Niners, the Seahawks, but they're not gonna
let Rico just come in and just run through them.
They're gonna make Bryce beat them. And we're gonna We're
gonna see now in these last seven games, can he
do it? And we'll have an answer then to whether
he's gonna get an extension or a big contract or
(03:33):
they gonna get his fifth year.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
What are they gonna do? We'll find out. Give me
this replacement? Absolutely, there's so people and I totally get it,
all right. It's been up and down I know for
me coming into this year. I said, and I know
there are some people out there who do not like
it when we reference the last ten games of last
year or whatever. It's like now I get that, like
it's only what have you done for me lately? It's that, hey, okay,
(03:56):
we saw that you can do it for me, it
was going into twenty twenty five. Can you do it consistently?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Can you do it? For seventeen games thus far, the
answer has been no, it's been no. And so if
I'm looking for the answer to my own personal question
coming into the year right now, the answers no. And
I don't like that. I hate it because I'm so
tired of this team looking for quarterbacks. Not that we've
had to do it really recently. He's been now here
for two and a half years, but I'm so over
the desperate search for a quarterback. I would like for
(04:21):
him to prove that he can be the guy consistently,
at least for a while. And Buddy, I mean, you
got to do it this weekend. I know the Falcons
are motivated and they've got it on the wall that
you beat him thirty to nothing here weeks ago, and
that's gonna Dres's gonna fuel them, And that's all well
and good, but you better have your own fuel after
laying an egg in front of your own fans against
the one and eight football team.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
Yeah, yeah, Bryce should have his fuel now, this panther.
I mean, if there's one thing that the Falcons can do.
They can play defense, and most specifically, they can get
out to the quarterback twenty nine sacks, fifth best in
the NFL. They're gonna get after Bryce Young, but you
know he's going to have his chances and his opportunity
to go out there and prove and throw this team
to a victory because you know, I think Rico's gonna
(05:01):
get his I mean, like the Factors just gave up
two hundred and forty something yards that you got to
Taylor last week. They're not gonna stop them completely from running,
but they're gonna sell out to try and stop to run.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
And Bryce is gonna have to throw.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
He's gonna have to have some some meaningful completions this
Sunday for this team to win, period.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
I agree. I want you to react to some audio,
by the way, that we played earlier in the show.
I think this was from yesterday, uh six point eighty
the fan down in Atlanta, I know you know the station.
I need too, got a lot of friends down there.
John Michaels, who's a long time friend of ours, has
spent some time up here. Listen to what he said
about this game. The last two.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Coaches we've had have both been fired after losses to
the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
We've already been boat.
Speaker 5 (05:37):
Raced by and watch if you get swept by the
Panthers this year, Do you just pull the plug on Monday?
Speaker 2 (05:42):
I don't think so.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
I mean, cause you'd be three and seven, you're seeing
I mean, the season's over anyway, You're really gonna be seasoned,
and then you're gonna be swept by Carolina, who changed
coaches the exact same day you did.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
We're not the same day, but the same offseason.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
They hired Dave Canalis when you did, and hired Raheem Moore.
But I don't want to go down this path. I
got a text from Big Travis Stroud. He said he
feels bad for Bjon Robinson. We're wasting a generational talent.
How many times does a generational talent walk.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Through your doors?
Speaker 5 (06:13):
How you can think about for the Falcons over the
last twenty five years, who are the generational talents that
have walked through here?
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Michael Vick, Matt Ryan.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
Jones, Julio Jones, Bjon Robinson could throw Roddy.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Roddy was really close. I give a lot of credit
to Roddy what but that's it?
Speaker 5 (06:28):
Are you gonna waste Bjon Robinson another year? Do we
magically think this is going to be fixed next year
if things aren't changed.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Before I get your reaction. The only real issue I
took with that was I have a problem calling Bijon generational. Okay,
And it's because I reserve that for the greatest of
the great and I think he's very, very, very very good.
But generational feels a little bit strong for a guy
who's just into his third year in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Look, I think this season I went wrong for the
Falcons when Rahee Morris called him the best player in
the lead right before they played the Panthers. They haven't
been the same since then. I mean, they don't know
how to use him right now. Zach Robinson is just
terrible as Oh see, they don't know what they're doing
off running the ball at all. But you know, I
don't even if they lose on Sunday, They're not pulling
(07:14):
the plug on Rahee Morris. You know, Arthur Blank loves
Rahee Morris. He knows Robert he Morris. He rehired Raye Morris.
He's not gonna fire him unless they really go out
there and get blown out thirty to nothing. Again, they're
not doing that. The rest of the year will be
Royie Morris. After this year, we'll talk about it, but
I think that's what it is. But you know, look,
the Panthers offense, I mean, the Falcons offense is just horrible,
(07:35):
especially on third downs. The last two weeks. They are
one for eighteen on third down. They didn't even convert
a third down last week. So as a defense that
struggle last week for the Carolina Panthers, this is a
get right game for this Panthers defense. They can get
their mojo back by just going out there and just
smacking the Falcons around if they want to, because it's
it's there because right now they don't know how to
use the weapons that they got. And I do feel
(07:57):
bad for Pennis because the coaches are felling him right now.
They're not coaching him up at all, and he's just
out there like a chicken.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
What does he come off?
Speaker 4 (08:04):
So, you know, this is a get right game for
the if the Carolina Panthers lose this game, But we're
gonna have some real conversations come Monday. You guys will
be having some real conversations come this money. There's no
reason why the Panthers should lose.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
If you lose a well played, you know, great football
game on the road. Okay, maybe we're having a slightly
different conversation if you know show if you play poorly
against a team that is horrible against the run, it's
worst defensive the worst defensive team on third down in
the league. Right now, you got have some splaining to
do come Monday. There's no doubt about that. All right,
(08:34):
let's pivot quickly to high school football. Really big night
in the playoffs. Let's just get the if you have
a question for Nate on the high school front, seven
oh four or five, seven ninety six to ten, or
a game you wanted to touch on. It's not a
typical Friday with the regular season, not as many games obviously,
but some big games. Where do you start tonight?
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Yeah, look, I'm gonna just hit it and just say
like this. We had thirty teams that had buys last
week from my area. They played tonight. Beware because they
are taking on some teams that are our own role
and playing well, like Charlotte Catholic. They're taking on ac Renolds,
AC Reynolds has won five of their last six games.
You know, on the opposite the end of that, Ao
Brown eight and two, at eight, they're eight and three.
(09:12):
They're at eight and two. Reagan up in the Greensboro area.
Al Brown's won five straight. They're on the roll that
they they're rolling while Reagan is trying to figure some
things out. You know, Lake Norman is hosting East for
Scythe Lake Norman lost a heartbreaking game to More as
well a couple of years, a couple of weeks ago.
Now they're trying to have to get this thing going
against the East for SYFE team that is balancing them
(09:35):
has won four five games, and I think that's the
thing that you got to watch out for tonight. Those
teams that had buys, but they're taking on teams that
played last week and they're playing well. They figured something
out and they're rolling at the right time. There's gonna
be three or four upsets tonight. I'm just gonna go
ahead and call my shop because those teams that just
kind of sat last week, and we've seen it in
the past. It's happened in the past, were higher seated
teams really higher seeded teams have lost the teams that
(09:58):
didn't have a buy and played that last week, and
I think we're gonna have three or four pretty big
upst tonight.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
All right. Well, okay, so a lot of questions coming
in Olympic and Sun Valley tonight. It's pretty popular on
the text line. I'll say. Olympics head coach Brandon Johnson
got a chance to chat with him early in the
season before the Ortho kickoff, really impressed by him. Wasn't
sure what kind of team he had to start the year,
but look at him now nine and two.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
Look, they're playing right they're playing well at the right time.
Chance kateal the quarterback came back after the injury, yep,
and they are rolling right now. But this Sun Valley team,
and both teams started zero to two this year, and
they're rolling right now. Sun Valley has an outstanding defense.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Boyday.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
I saw him play against Charlotte Cathley and and shut
them out. And they're just rolling right now with that
defense and noelh Linberry. Uh, that's gonna be a pretty
good game right there between them. Two in the six
A bracket.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
All right, let's see a few more of these seven
oh four, five seven ninety six ten. We have Texters,
Independence and Page tonight. I think you hit on that one,
But what about this game in particular.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
Yeah, Page, they're they're they're eight and three. They're playing well,
but man, Independence is four to oh since they lost
the Wishart thirty one seven, and the defense has stepped
up in a big way. They're only giving up four
points per game during this winning streak. The Office is
averaging thirty eight points during this winning streak. I expect
Independence to roll tonight, even though both teams have the
same record. And you know that whole deal of Page
(11:14):
played last week and Independence was off, Well, I'm just
gonna throw that out because I think Independence is on
a mission right now. Everybody's talking about all these other
teams in the area, but Independence is out to say, hey,
you know, we're ready to compete in the seven eight playoffs.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Stuart Kramer bandies tonight. We had a text seven or
four numbers that asked Nate about to turn around from
Stuart Kramer.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
They thoughts on the new head coach, first year head coach.
There they're playing well, but look beware once again Bandy's
they took High Brighton to overtime in the regular season
finale a couple of weeks ago. They scored seventy one
points last week. You know Kramer's playing well, but look,
don't let that six and five record for Bandy's fool you.
(11:54):
That's a good football team. So you know it's been
a great season for Kramer, but they better watch out tonight.
Speaker 6 (11:59):
Well, and this show to Kyle Bailey show, we always
root and leics. You're playing North Lincoln for one Jason
Barnes at Baties High School, we do yes, and it's
always a great day to be a RAM.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
We didn't talk about this in the pre show meeting. Hey, hey,
JB's cool. I never signed up for any of that.
JB's cool. He's badass. All right. My Lake Norman Wildcats
are in the playoffs. I ain't rooting for anybody else
but my Lake Norman Wildcats and the damn playoffs tonight.
So when I know, I'm not jumping on anybody else's bandwagon,
No go Bandies, baby go Trojans, now whatever? All right?
So a Texter here asked about the West Cabaris Grimsley
(12:33):
game tonight. I do some high school football throughout the season,
mostly in the beginning of the year. We looked up
a couple of weeks ago. I had no clue. Brandon
Faison had not played since Week one. In that game
against West Charlotte and there's still ten.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
To zero inreed hand. They had a freshman step in
and they won every game. They won nine straight with
a freshman quarterback. He tells you how good the other
parts on the machine are working, and they're working well,
and now you get fase on Brandon back. Grimsly's going
to be a handful of folks, you know, Wittington and Independence,
they're gonna have something to say about it. But as
(13:05):
far as tonight, it's been a good season for coach Jenkins.
I believe it's his first year there at West Comparison.
This year they've been they've been playing well. But it's
a different level. Yeah, Grimsley's a different.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Level, all right. If you have another one, send us
in seven oh four or five seven of ninety six ten?
Did you hit Morriswell Butler? Did you usually talk about.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Those Morriswell Butler Butler? I was at the Butler game
last week. They had a great game between them and
Hope Well where Butler kind of they got their legs
under them twenty one to seven in the fourth quarter
to run away with it, but it was tied at
twenty one going into the fourth. Butler's just you know,
they've had some problems with their quarterback at the quarterback
position with injuries and throwing the ball.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
They threw it pretty well last week.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
But they're they're depending on the Mary and Thomas right
to run the ball. Morriswell is rolling right now. Macombs
at running back quarterbacks playing well. I do believe morris
Well is gonna get this one tonight. But you know
it'll be close. I think at the half, but the
second half I think more as will turn.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
On a game. And I have to say, between Morrisville
and Lake Norman, I mean, I think that town needs
to steal the Moniker from rock Hill for Football City USA.
I'm just throwing that out there. I'm just gonna put
that out there as a possibility. That's what they might
have to put. They got to have put a lot
of players. Okay, fine, I'm stretching the I'm exaggerating a
little bit, but very good football out there, and yes
it is though it is. Did you hit Mallard Creek
(14:22):
West Forsyth. I'm sorry I didn't.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
That's another that's another pretty good one where you know,
Mala Creek was off, but West played last week.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
They're on a six game winning streak.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
With more with with malay Creek, it's always about the quarterback.
We know the defense is gonna be good. How well
is the quarterback gonna play tonight again? So westrosd sife
team that is rolling once again. They played last week,
Mala Creek didn't. They got to figure some things out.
But uh, that's gonna be a tight game. That's that's
the one in the city that where I'm like the
home team might be the big trump. You know that
(14:51):
that's gonna be a tight game, depending on how the
quarterback plays for Mala Creek.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
All right, with what time we have left, let's talk
a little basketball for a second. Hornets are four and seven,
all right, they get the Bucks for a second straight
night tonight, not well second straight game tonight, NBA Cup
Group stage, fancy courts, you know across the NBA. Then
we get those those creamstickle orange mint City edition uniforms
tomorrow night against Oklahoma City. Feel free to weigh in
(15:16):
on that, but you know, conk Nipple looks like the
real deal. And Ryan Kockprinter that guy went off Daddy
Mussels showing up a couple of nights ago, and they
get LaMelo back tonight. So the vibes are good right now.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
I think before the season you played a clip for
me about who said it.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
He was.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Yeah, maybe Bill was onto something because playing the Ryan
or Scillo sill because they're buddies, right, they do a
lot of NBA podcasting together. Listen to it, Ryan Rosillo
this morning. Smoke's gonna grab it on his podcast. The
opening line of this alone is enough to make you
smile and chuckle. Smoke was the one that brought it
to me. He's trying to cue it up right now.
But like the sudden and overwhelming love for Conk Nipple
(15:55):
across the NBA media, Escape has been just incredible to
watch the last couple of days. People are taking notice.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
It's unbelievable. You know, one hundred and fifty points thirty
three pointers in his first ten games of his career.
No one else, no one else in NBA history has
done that, folks. Conk Nipple, I mean that makes me spread.
No Jordan, no Lebron put any person you want first
ten games, one hundred and fifty points and thirty may
three pointers.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
None of them you're ready to go smoke. Here we go.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
This is just a bit of it. This is Ryan Rossello,
Conk Nipple, ten games in he's perfect. Look his family,
so I guess his mom was the all time leading
score at her college. The dad was the all time
leading scorer at his college up until like a few
years ago. I've guesst a couple uncles, one that played overseas.
He was built in a basketball lab. Watching Conk Nipple
play basketball and him understanding the game like this already. Yeah, sure,
(16:46):
it's it's seventeen six and three, forty five and forty
shooting splits.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
That's I didn't even care about that. I watched that.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Full Lakers game the other night, and it's just the
way he sees the game. And we saw some of
this at Duke, even though there were so many guys
with the ball in his hand and that you like,
we had shyer on. It was like, yeah, you know,
there's probably more that he could have done, but the
team was stacked. And now he's a rookie on not
a great team and he doesn't, he doesn't force anything.
(17:13):
I mean, just there, you go, just stop it there,
just raving about confident.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
It's spot on though. I mean, like you know, I mean,
a Cooper Flags on your team, what are you gonna do.
You're gonna, you know, hand it off to Cooper Flag
and let him do things. You know, LaMelo Ball and
Brandon Miller out here, you go, what can you do
with it? And so far he's showing up and showing
out and I think I'm trying not to be frustrated
or angry about this, but it would be so great
(17:38):
and you get LaMelo back now to see the full
complement of this scene. What is the potential of this
team now? I do believe some of his some of
these numbers are gonna take a tick down because you've
got Miller and LaMelo Ball out there. But maybe his
percentages go up because he's gonna get some more open shots.
He's getting open shots now, He's gonna get more open shots.
So the frustrating thing for me now is not that
(17:59):
this team is hurting their losing. I want to see
this team be healthy and play together. And what does
this basketball look like? Because I think it's going to
be winning basketball.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
And our biggest concern about this team coming in was
the five spot. Right, No, how the five spot does
not look like a liability. Absolutely, kan Ko Nupp was
doing this thing.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
Most of Diabat is just coming in and and and
and being a force on that second unit. Man, I'm
telling you, if they could just get healthy, and I
know we continue to say that they say this, but
if they could just stay healthy's those two LaMelo Ball
Brandon Miller can stay on the floor with these rookies
and the other complimentary pieces. But I don't think this
team is shown the best of what they can be
(18:34):
just quite yet. I don't think Trey Mann has showed
the best that he could be. Yeah, there's just so
much potential for this team if those guys could get
on the court and just stay healthy and just let
this thing just kind of grow. But it's just depending
on them being healthy. I mean, it looks good now,
These rookies look good now. I want to see them
mesh and play with those veterans. I'm with you, and
(18:55):
I think it's just gonna be something special if they
could ever get healthy.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Yeah, Jack says, it's mellow playing tonight he's listed as probable,
so unless something catastrophic has happened in the last eight hours,
I'm hoping Sherry Canipple kept him overnight at her house
and you know, he slept in in a sleeping bag
and they just let him relax all day. But it's
looking like he's going to play tonight. I just don't
know how that Duke team didn't win the national championship.
But we will come, we'll talk about it. We'll talk
(19:19):
about that a different day. Nate, it was great to
see you, buddy, Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
Eleven tonight football Friday Night on WBTV.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
Watch him, Nate, Wimberley and studio will come back. We'll
take your phone calls. Sports Radio ninety two to seven
w fn Z, Conkin Nipple, he's perfect. Sports Radio ninety
(20:02):
two to seven w f n Z, cruising toward the
end on a Friday, but just a quick break for me.
Then back at seven o'clock tonight for Hornets pre game.
Eight o'clock tip from the five Serve Forum in Milwaukee.
Sam Farber on the call as always here on the
Hornets Radio Network on the flagship, and of course the
great Eric Collins and Del Curry over at the Fan
Duel Sports Network and looking forward to watching that tonight
(20:24):
seven four five, seven ninety six ten. Hit us up
on the Fan Duel text line, would love to hear
what you think Smoke reacted poorly when I just mentioned
how did Duke lose the National Championship game with that
that cast of characters Hooper, Flag, Conka, Nipple, you know,
common Mola, Watch, and.
Speaker 6 (20:42):
I just well out watch didn't get what only one
rebound or something like that. Yeah, no, you're right, didn't
see On James sitting in bounds a pass late.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
Malik Murphy, you know, Cooper missed a free throw.
Speaker 6 (20:54):
Con actually wasn't one of the guys that stuck up
in the last few minutes of that game.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
No, no, he wasn't. And then, of course Hugh then
can't even finish the job after they get past Duke
in the final four, which made things far worse for
folks like you.
Speaker 6 (21:05):
That was my generation's version of the Yukon Natty loss
for Duke.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Ah.
Speaker 6 (21:10):
Yeah, I like, yeah, that's true. That's that's tough when
you look at it that way. Yeah, And that's why
I get PTSD whenever CC I now in bounding and pass.
Now when I saw them, I saw him it was
the last game or something like you know, no, no, no, no, yeah,
just get it, get it, get it before five seconds?
Speaker 3 (21:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Have you have you been like surfing channels at any
point since then and caught that game replay on and
like accidentally looked or have you even looked at it?
Speaker 7 (21:33):
No?
Speaker 2 (21:33):
I haven't looked at it. I've gone. I'm assuming you
never will again if you can help it. Uh.
Speaker 6 (21:37):
I think I could get to that point just because heck,
they're playing in Indianapolis this year in the final four,
and given Duke's history of winning national titles, they've only
done it in two cities. So if they win a
Natty this year, yeah, I can go back and watch
that game just fine. Like, there are certain games and
I now have a I showed you my top ten
list that I created over Saturday after the Western Carolina loss.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Okay, there are certain games that I'll I'll never.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
Watch until my team A wins a nattier Super Bowl
in an NBA title. The games that I won't watch, uh,
twenty sixteen Week one Panthers Broncos to head hunting game.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Oh y'all, he made a complete top ten list with
like five honorable mentions. This is a real list that
he's typed up on his phone. So just to set
the scene here, this is the These are the worst
losses of your life as a fan. Yes, honorable mentions.
Speaker 6 (22:22):
First, Coke six hundred and two thousand and eight, Tony
took two tires, was going to win the Coke six hundred.
Tire went flat on the other side, so that cost
him his closest chance of winning the Coke six hundred.
The Christmas Eve game against the Cowboys, Julius Pepper Pepper's
block that kick that was not rough through kicker.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Super Bowl thirty eight made the honorable mentions.
Speaker 6 (22:41):
The Final four game against Yukon and four for Duke
K's last home game, Reddick's last home game, and almost
every Hornets loss to the Heat all made honorable mentions.
My top ten are as follows ten to two thousand
and eight to eight. On the five hundred one Ryan
Neuwim passed Tony on the last lap, nine, the Duke
Houston Final four eight, the playoff game against the Heat,
(23:02):
Game six, Purple Shirt Guy Sure seven, Super Bowl fifty six,
Week one, the head hunting game against the Bronco Can
you stop right there and explain that how the super
Bowl loss in Super Bowl fifty is worse than the
ensuing Week one game against the Broncos in twenty sixteen.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
I mean you had a way around or did I
say it backwards? I'm saying you did explain.
Speaker 6 (23:19):
That though, because you felt like Carolina was going to
get their get back. The NFL purposely did this for
a Super Bowl rematch to being Week one to where
they are showing their Super Bowl Trophy presentation and they
haven't done it for anyone before or since. For a
Super Bowl champion, usually they played another opponent. They don't
play the teams that they played in the Super Bowl.
Prime example to next year, the Falcons didn't play the
(23:40):
Patriots in Foxborough in Week one, just wanted to no
dead out. And then you had the head hunting where
they didn't call penalties on von Miller or any of
that defense or would be off setting, which made no
sense considering they were trying to give this man a
concussion in CTE at the same time.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
All right, we'll keep going.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
Five to twenty twelve Draft Lottery Anthony Davis, Yes, four
QUQ and C final four free shot Caleb Love, Yeah,
thanks for reminding me. Three Mercer Western Carolina brutal. Yeah,
that was a brutal loss. Two to two thousand and
seven day on the five hundred. Tony had won the
damn but shoot out and the gatory duel, had the
best car and then wrecked with forty three laps to
(24:16):
go with Kurt Busch when he had the lead and
number one. The two thousand and eight NFC Divisional playoff
game between the Arizona Cardinals when Jake his career basically
ended five interceptions Bible, Yes, that that is still worse
than any Super Bowl loss.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
That is the worst loss.
Speaker 6 (24:33):
And it started so well because they ran down the field,
the Anselo gets a touchdown or it was Jase tue
biv Way seven to nothing in the seven minute drive,
It's like, yeah, we're doing it to him again.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Remind me, remind me again the clip where Jake tells
that story and he's in the kitchen and his mom's
who'd she blame it on? Byron Bell? Who he blamed
it on? No? No, no, who's she blame it on?
John Casey? Casey. That's right, I'm sorry that John Casey
missed a kick and then he was kicking.
Speaker 8 (24:56):
He was at refrigerators, like mom, I threw five interceptions, Mama,
do five interceptions and did To make it worse, the
he gets a forty three million dollar contract extension into
next game against the Eagles to start the season.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
He has four turnovers. That's a good list. It's a
terrible list for you. That's it's a good list. That's
a stroll down memory pain.
Speaker 6 (25:16):
I am not watching Super Bowl fifty any of those
Panther games until they win a super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Okay, take a breath. I'm gonna take a phone call.
Who's your Bobby's here to spread some joy? Who's your Bobby?
What's up?
Speaker 9 (25:26):
Happy Friday?
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Guys, Thanks buddy, what's on your mind?
Speaker 9 (25:28):
Hey, Hey, Smokey, I'm surprised that your dookiees losing my
Hoosiers in the met eight when you guys were the
overall number one seed didn't make the top ten.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
That was pretty bad, but I've had a lot worse. Yeah.
Speaker 9 (25:42):
Okay, okay, Kyle, we all know as husbands we need
to listen to our wives. Correct, correct, Okay, Well, your
blue Choo had earlier this afternoon. Do the blue too,
and you can score a touchdown in her end zone. Bro,
you already told you you're out of pocket. That one
(26:02):
really pushes the roundary.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
Well, you know, Mamma complaining with the checks cash, So
I don't want to hear a word about it.
Speaker 9 (26:10):
Right, Just two things real quick, the Hornets and smoke.
You've probably got the best recall. This might be the
best draft class in totality in how long. I mean,
I'm really excited about.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
It for the Hornets. Yeah, oh yeah, at least since
the team came back, it's looking really good.
Speaker 9 (26:29):
I mean, I'm I'm as excited about Hornets basketball in
the longest time, and probably maybe more optimistic than the
Panthers at this point. The last thing, XL has got
to ball out this weekend. I don't know why we're
not throwing fifty fifty balls to him. That's his thing.
If he can't get the job done this weekend, he's
(26:52):
just gonna be trash. What do you guys think?
Speaker 2 (26:54):
I appreciate the phone call, brother, have a great weekend.
I'm not even it's not the fifty to fifty balls.
Where's the slant? Can we get him on some more
slants and screens to get him an open space with
the ball in his hands. That's where I think he
can be the most effective in middle of the field.
Speaker 6 (27:07):
When you look at some of the biggest plays he's
had this year, I think of that big pass he
had in Green Bay where he got the win knocked
out of him. He had another one against the Jets
that was to extend to drive and essentially iced a game.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
It's been in the middle of the field.
Speaker 6 (27:20):
I honestly thank him and Jalen Cocher need to switch
spots on the lineup because I think Coker will be better
on the outside and I think maybe have Ted or
Aura on the inside at times or excel and he
here's to think out. XL has one hundred and ninety
two receiving yards this year or one hundred and eighty eight,
like ninety two of them came in that Jets game alone.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
And you probably know the answer to this, How many yak,
how many yards after catch does he have this year?
What probably ten thirty seven and ten games three point
seven per Well, okay, so he missed what two games,
two games, eight games eight? But still yeah, that's still
not good. It comes out to what four and a
half yards of yak per game? That's a brutal four
(27:58):
and a half. Yet, how do four half yack per
game yards after catch or yards? I know, I'm trying
to just say it, you know, in a way that
makes it what the acrona would like, like, would you
appropriately use RBI right, look at me, RBI as he
has that's not plural, it's leave me. The RBI has
runs batt in, not runs bad. It ends. I think
you just go yack. I think I got it right though,
(28:19):
like four and a half yacks per game. No, that's
not right. Four and a half yack per game? There
you go?
Speaker 3 (28:25):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Anyway, seven oh four five, seven ninety six ten. Speaking
of that, I mean, there's got to be another receiver
step up this week because clearly in the second half
of these games, and really just in total, with these
defensive game plans that they're facing, teams have seen that
Tetoro McMillan is the only guy that seems to be
a really dangerous Pats catching target right now. And Brad Igzay,
Panthers offensive coordinator, was asked how he can counter teams
(28:48):
taking away Tartaro McMillan.
Speaker 10 (28:50):
As you go, you continue to move guys around. You
try to highlight the wins and wares of Hey, we
think that tilt the coverage is gonna tilt this way.
That gives other guys opportunities. If you go back in
the in the last game and there's some great looks
at you know, a target might go Temax way. Other
receivers are also doing a good job of making sure
(29:10):
that they're they're winning their their roles. But it's all
connected protection to I discipline from the quarterback and receiver,
you know, positions, and then for us as coaches, making
sure that we mix a match where you find those
guys uh in the formations and in the concepts.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Yeah, you got to move him around. Obviously you need
other guys to step up, but you got to move
him around. We had Cornelius Robb say that Xcel has
zero field awareness. We have to throw him the ball
in the middle of the field on the move. Early
in the year, Remember when I told you after all
the hubbub was like but I saw him at FanFest
and when Bryce hit him on that quick slant and
he just outran the defense to the end zone.
Speaker 6 (29:48):
Like That's that's it. That's the thing, isn't it what
he did really well at South Carolina too?
Speaker 2 (29:52):
If I'm not mistaken. Yes, yeah, So you got to
get him in those situations, get the ball in his
hands early. Yes, you want to be able to get
him in more to pull locations across the field. But
get him the ball as quickly as you can in
space over the middle of the field. He's pretty good
with the ball in his hands once he gets it.
So I hope we see some more of that on Sunday.
Quick phone call. Wes is up next to Wes. What's
(30:14):
going on, partner?
Speaker 9 (30:17):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Man, Uh, I just think you know, we need to
push the ball down the field.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
Agreed.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Uh. I think that trust between Canalist and Bryce it
needs to improve because I mean that's I think that's
what makes right better is pushing the ball down the field.
And you're going to make mistakes like you're a quarterback,
you know.
Speaker 7 (30:36):
And like you said, I think he made a good
point with Excel.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
You know, give him get him some quick outs, you know,
some quickouts or some quick flants, you know, get him going.
That's that's where he's the best day. You know, they
can up play down the field, get some artists after,
got some yacks if you will, and yeah, make him
make some plays. You know, we saw it in college.
Like you said, Uh yeah, that's pretty much it.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
Thank you. Wes. Appreciate the phone call man. They got
to open up the pass game occasion. Andy just said, well,
it's because bust Young. Bust Young cannot push the ball
down the field. The dbs can sit on shorter routes
and it makes wide receivers look bad. I disagree that
he can't. I think he isn't, and that's got to
change this weekend, if for no other reason, to prove
(31:21):
to us to your point that he can't. If you
think he can't, that's fine. You're allowed to think that way.
They got to let it rip. You cannot. I know
defenses are sitting back in cover two shell cover. I
mean forcing offenses like the Panthers to dink and dunk
down the field, force ten to eleven twelve play drives
bank on you making a mistake. We're seeing a lot
(31:41):
of that across the NFL this year. So if you
run the ball effectively, which they should be able to
do this weekend against the Falcons, force another body up
into the box and run support. Then it's the quarterback's
job to win and the wide receiver's jobs to win.
You got to be able to win in those situations.
Bryce has to prove it. These receivers have to prove
it against Atlanta. This run defense is awful, so I
(32:03):
expect Rico's gonna have you. They might sell out, and
I expect that they will. But this is one of,
if not the worst run defenses in the NFL. They
are the worst defense on third down in the NFL.
This offense has to make plays on Sunday. They just
have to. Let's go to smoke on the headlines, all right, Cale.

Game dot NC dot gov. An interesting weekend of college
football around here. First off, starting tonight, Louisville takes on Clemson.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
The game is in Louisville.
Speaker 6 (32:47):
Clemson coming off a win against Florida State, looking pretty
confident they are four and five Louisville coming off of
that ot loss to cal In other games this weekend,
we have North Carolina and Wake Forest at wake Forest.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Wake Forest is officially Bowl eligible.
Speaker 6 (33:01):
In North Carolina, the next three games against rivals have
to win two of the three to be Bowl eligible.
Mentioned it earlier in C State takes on Miami. Virginia
takes on Duke in what is a very highly contested
game in acc terms and over Indie American.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Do want to point this out. Charlotte takes on Utsa.
Speaker 6 (33:20):
You can hear that game right here on sports Radio
wf and Z tomorrow. But Kyle, the biggest game Indie
American probably could be between Memphis and East Carolina. Memphis,
coming off of loss last week against believe it no,
not South Florida, but I forget who it was, but
it was Tulane that they lost to. East Carolina technically
has a shot, Kyle at the playoffs. It's not much
(33:42):
of a shot, but it's point six and considering the
last twelve years, the fact that they still have a
shot of being in the playoffs at this point in
the season is massive for this team. Well, it completely
validates the decision to hold on to Blake Carroll and
make him the coach. I also think John David Baker
has done it incredible job as their offensive coordinator. You
absolutely we have to think he's getting head coaching looks
(34:04):
with all the openings that we're about to watch, right,
you would think with some of the smaller Power five
or Group of five schools, you'd think he would get up.
But then again, man, if you were able to keep
him for a year three, that would be massive for
the Pirates.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
He's a pretty young guy right still in his mid thirties.
I think I believe that is correct. You might be
able to hang on to him for another year. Maybe
what else you got.
Speaker 6 (34:22):
Also, do want to mention a big game tomorrow for
app State as they're taking on JMU who is currently
one of the group of five teams thatatus competing for
a playoffs.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
But it's basically between them and South Florida right now.
I just I'm marvel at all of the great head
coaches that James Madison continues to produce. It's a damn factory, man.
I mean, you go back to Mickey Matthews, who won
a national championship there back in two thousand and four.
Mike Houston did a great job, Kurtzignetty did a great job.
Bob Chasney's doing a great job. I mean JMU has
(34:53):
turned into a great job at the Group of five level.
Speaker 6 (34:56):
And the fact that they've done this in the midst
of moving up to FBS without a hit into plan, Yeah,
absolutely amazing.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
It is. We'll come back and wrap up the show.
Sports Radio ninety two to seven wf and Z Sports
(35:27):
Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z, KB and Smoke
wrapping up the show, Mark and Morganton. I just want
to give you some assurance that your texts are in
fact coming through. He had sent me a text about
XL saying he catches with his chest across the middle man.
I hope he can have a good game this week.
I read that because sometimes you know there are many
of you who will text in. Am I blocked? Are
(35:49):
my text coming through? I just I try to get
to as many of them as I can throughout the
course of the show. Some days we get a lot,
some days it's just a little, but we do our
best so you are not blocked. I assure you of that.
And I appreciate all your texts and contributions into the
show today again hornetson Bucks tonight from the five Serf
Forum in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tip off at eight pregame
at seven, So we got a break coming up in
(36:10):
here about ten minutes. We as in us at instant
replay coming up top of the hour, the best of
the day here on wfn Z, and then back at
seven live with t Bone for Tonight's Hornets pregame show.
You will hear from Musa Diabate, our friend Camille Williams
who covers the Bucks for the Lockdown Network, Sam Farbara
of course, and hornetshead coach Charles Lee. So make sure
to hang out with us. But for right now, we
(36:31):
have to catch you up on what you've missed. It's
time for the rewind and we go back to our
number one, Chip Patterson cbssports dot Com, CBS Sports Network
and the Cover three podcast with another big college football
weekend ahead of us, in particular here on the State
of North Carolina, Carolina and Wake Forest from Winston Salem
(36:54):
Tomorrow at four point thirty on the CW our very
own West Bryant will be prowling the sidelines. Here's Chip
Patterson on what he's expecting from Wake and Carolina.
Speaker 7 (37:03):
For North Carolina and Bill Belichick obviously.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
Wake Duke in State.
Speaker 7 (37:08):
You're talking about three games that mean a lot to
Carolina fans, the Carolina Boosters, to Carolina Lomny like, these
are the results that really you end up carrying into
the winner in the holiday season with your family, with
your friends, so on and so forth.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
So they're big ones, right.
Speaker 7 (37:22):
Wake Forest does not have Darien Mensa. Wake Forest does
not have CJ.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Bailey.
Speaker 7 (37:26):
North Carolina's strength is its defense, you know, the special teams,
field position. I play the kind of game to hope
that the other team makes a mistake and then take
advantage of it. They do not have an offense right
now that can march eighty five yards down the field
time and time again. NC State does.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Duke does.
Speaker 7 (37:44):
They've got dynamic quarterbacks. I don't think Wake Forest does.
So I think wake Forest is. Yeah, wake Forest might
be the sort of hotter team playing with Thompson, but
it is a game that I think will be lower scoring.
Speaker 3 (37:55):
And then yes, North Carolina will have a chance.
Speaker 7 (37:57):
I think against Duke, I think against State, there's a
number that those two offenses can hit right. I just
think that North Carolina fundamentally would really struggle to.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Keep off Smoke. Who do you have in that game? Wake?
But I feel like it's going to be a low
scoring affair. Wake is favored by six and a half,
well higher than I thought it would be. Yeah, considering
how close they played a lot of people too. Yeah,
it's a little higher than I thought it would be.
I too like Wake at Home, But we'll see later
in the show. Nate Wimberley WBTV Sports Director Sports anchor
(38:27):
back in studio for his Friday conversation. Here's Nate saying
the Panthers Falcons game better be a get right game
for Carolina.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
The Falcons offense is just horrible, especially on third downs.
The last two weeks. They're one for eighteen on third down.
They didn't even convert a third down last week. So,
as a defense that struggle last week for the Carolina Panthers,
this is a get right game for this Panthers defense.
They can get their mojo back by just going out
there and just smacking the Falcons around if they want to,
because it's it's there. Because right now they don't know
(38:54):
how to use the weapons that they got. And I
do feel bad for Penis because the coaches are filling
him right now, they're not coaching him up at all,
and he's just out there like a like a chick.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
What does he to cut off?
Speaker 4 (39:05):
So you know, this is a get right game for
the if the Carolina Panthers lose this game, but we're
gonna have some real conversations. Come money, well you you
guys will be having some real conversations come this money.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
Yeah, not we us. We take the brount of it
here at wfn Z. And that's okay, that's what we
signed up for. That's the rewind to look back into
