Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Tennis Mini. We're at the business end
of the US Open. Coming up, King of the Court,
Carlos Beats a legend, Sablenka's Arena, the women semis go
the distance and first a hat thief, now a bag snatcher,
stocks up, stocks down, Coming up with me, Bret Thomas
and mill Or Wheez.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Welcome the players for our next match.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Fromaly.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Lorenzo, Lorenzo Mazzetti, thank you for having me. Welcome to
the Tennis Mini aka Anthony Moribito. I love the leather
jacket looking great. And how good of these intros been
in New York.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, they've been great. Actually, I suppose we haven't talked
about these earlier. Yeah, just like a hype, like a
boxing match, a wrestling match. But yeah, the only problem
is is once they come out, they've got eight minutes
of sort of warm up and then straight into it.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah, I mean, look, hats off two or headbands off
to Lorenzo Mazzetti for leaning into it. The leather jacket.
What a vibe that is. It's got a bit of
Saturday night fever about it. John Travolta, and you do
as well.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
Oh, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Brett yeah, a bit like Mike Tyson or maybe Rocky Balboa.
Some fun walkouts that you can think.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Of, Yeah, I mean just boxing and wrestling known for
their walkouts, and the UFC as well.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Yep. Yeah, good to see tennis taking a leaf from
some other sports.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
And building up the personalities. All right, let's get stuck
into it semi finals. As we mentioned down to the
business end, what is one of the four semi finals
that you want to pick out and talk about?

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yeah, probably the pick of the four for me was
the Amanda Anisamova Numia Saka match. So two hours and
fifty six minutes, Yeah, one am in the morning, we
finally got our winner and it was Anisimova. Yeah, it
was just a great match. Both girls played so well.
It was really sad that it had to be a loser.

(01:57):
BAKSPAC Finals over. And if someone told you that the
start of the probably wouldn't have believed them.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah, you wouldn't have believed. Seven weeks ago when she
lost six love six love, dished up a double bagel
that she'd be back so soon. That says a lot
about her mental strength exactly.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
I mean, if there's a way she can have trained
her mental fortitude. Looks like she might have done something
because there were some points in that match where the
pressure was really up to eleven and yeah, she just
managed to break through.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah, she lost the first set in a tiebreak, and
it seemed like the match was going to be decided
off her racket. She's such a pure ball striker, so
much power but unforced there is flying off her racket
and at one point her coach looked at her and said,
stop complaining. And you would have thought going back to
wimble and she might have been rattled, but she wasn't.
And this was no easy opponent in Osaka either.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
No, Sarka's played great this tournament and he has had
some pretty good form actually leading up to the US
Open as well. So yeah, great to see her make
it this far. But yeah, Anisimova, Yeah, six' five in
the second, Set nami's serving for the, match she finds
a way to break back and force it to the tie.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Break, yeah incredible effort and look hats off as well
To Naomi. OSAKA i think a big storyline In New
york has been her resurgence and her return To Grand slam.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Contentionent definitely looking good For, yeah HOPEFULLY ao next year
she might be able to win where she's won again.
Previously but, yeah she's really had to work hard to
sort of get back up in the. Rankings she's sort
of been out of that sort of top ten, level top,
ten top, twenty and then having finally actually making to

(03:34):
THE Us open SEEDED i really helped that sort of
set up her, tournament and then she was able to
sort of get through further with having those sort of
easier matches at the start and then getting on right
into the.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Tournament, yeah she had an amazing stat, though in terms
of making the last aid of a slam that's now.
Over she hadn't lost in the, quarterfinals but, yeah unfortunately
she ran into a pretty talented young player who were
going to be seeing a lot of at the pointy
end of.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
Tournaments, yeah, Definitely, yeah great effort By.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Anisimova, yeah even just making mimbohem final was a bit
of a shock to everyone as. Well but, yeah she's
a pretty good CHANCE i think Against, sabolenka which will
cover us towards the end of the, show but, YEAH
i think it'll be a pretty even.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Match.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Yeah the other absolutely and look to be, honest both
Women semis could could have been matched a round the
way that The Sabolenka pagoula match played. Out but let's
go for the one that just wrapped up before we started.
Recording That's Yannick Sinner Felix Augia elia sim four, sets
just over three. Hours in the, end The italian did
what he has done for the past few, years and

(04:41):
that's win a big.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
Match, yeah it was a great effort By.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Sinner remembers just watching this game six won the first
at The sydney, thought, oh we all know how this game's.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Going to play.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Out but, yeah To felix's, credit taking a second set
was a pretty decent. Effort and Then sinner calling for
the trainer at the end of the second, set AND
i was, thinking, oh this might actually open up here For.
Felix but To sinner's, credit he fought back whatever injury he,
had possibly an abdominal. INJURY i think we'll find out

(05:12):
a bit more.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
As the coming. Days in the coming, days.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
But, yeah just great effort By sinner just to really
just dig deep and fight and get the.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Result, yeah he said there was nothing to, see nothing
to worry, about and he came out after that medical
time out and served really, well so perhaps that's a good.
Sign but you, know after he cools down because he
still had a lot of adrenaline going from the, match
that will be when potentially any issues arise For Yannick.
Sinner but let's hope, not because we'll prove you the
final later. On but we want both of their full

(05:43):
powers because it's become you, Know, Federer, Djokovic, nadal this
rivalry Between King carlos And Yannix sinner as.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Well, yeah the Third Grand sam final in a row
between these, two and, yeah it's amazing and that's probably
what the fans wanted to. See but, yeah it sort
of really says a bit for the rest of men's,
tennis where it's like these two at the moment and
it doesn't really look like anyone's going to challenge.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Them, yeah, look and they're creating their own.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
History.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Now he's the youngest man in The open era to
make Every slam final in a calendar, year Joining Rod, Laver,
federer And. Djokovic so some handy company. There fifth Straight
Grand slam. Final Only, Novak nadal And federer have done.
That and he is just so. Clinical the way he,
plays he almost seems a little Un, italian maybe More
german in that, respect compared To, mazzei who he beat

(06:33):
in the quarter. Finals but he is just a brick
wall that gives very little. Away As yadick, Sinner.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah he's locked in and he's yeah all this. Year
really he's the guy to. Beat we know he had
a bit of a break after the austral And, open
so maybe they'll hold him in good stead for the
final and the rest of the calendar.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Year, yeah we'll preview the final a little bit later,
on but let's get into our favorite, segment stocks, up stocks,
down who's, rising who's?

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Four you're a former Accountant Wall.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Street of course you're a positive guy as, well so
let's start with stocks up, There aunt and, look of
course we could have talked about every semi. Final let's
talk about the ones that we left. Out And Arena
saberlenka into ANOTHER Us open.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Decider, yeah she hasn't won A Grand slam this, year
but she still had an amazing season and she's so
far ahead in the ranking. Points, YEAH i guess she
kind of needs to win A Grand slam this year
just to sort of give that stamp of what a
great season she's actually. Had, yeah for her not to

(07:38):
win A Grand slame this, season it would almostly be quite.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
UNFAIR i would feel she's paid well.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
For so many years now and she's like really cemented
herself as like the world number one women's. Player, yeah
but in, tennis anything could happen on the, day and,
yeah we know With anisimova that just she'll have the
whole around behind. Her tabilinka one last, year so she's
got that going for. Her and, yeah beating An american

(08:06):
last year as. WELL i just really think there's a
really like show that she is the.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
World number one. Player it would be good for her
to have That Grand. Slam.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Yeah she was on the ropes Against Jessica, bogula who
she beat in last year is THE Us. Open lost
the first, set then took a medical time, out and
that sort to change the momentum of the, match changed
her outfit and changed her, game started mixing it up
a little bit Through jessica bugle off and she got
through in three. Sets stocks up for me and Is
anasamova's backhand the fastest on, tour would you, believe faster

(08:38):
than any Man Or woman at seventy seven miles per.
Hour that's about one hundred and twenty three, k's which
is faster Than Yannick. Cinner that is absolutely incredible and
it means that matches are often decided off her.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Racket, YEAH i couldn't believe that's that when you told
me that coming in this.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Morning that's.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Amazing it must be like she wouldn't be the strongest
player on the, tour but it must be timing for
her to hit the ball so. Well and, yeah just
when that ball sort of gets up in that. Zone
she was really putting balls, away especially in that third
set against The, saka just any ball where she had
a bit of time to set herself far, up straight

(09:15):
through and just hitting the. Lines and, yeah she was
making some great shots in that semi.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Final of, course not just singles happening In New, york
but doubles as. Well stocks up for. Me Gabriella dobrowski
And Aaron, routelift The canadian and The New, zealander won
their SECOND Us open twenty twenty. Three they won their,
first and after that both of them had some. Issues
routlift broke a, rib so Did dobrowski and then she
revealed she was diagnosed with breast, cancer delayed treatment so

(09:42):
she could compete At wimbledon this. Year they made the,
final she's conquered that and now she's conquered the courts
Of Flushing meadows as. Well so that's a great story
for those. Two you could see the emotion when they
won that final overnight as.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
Well, yeah that's a great that's a great.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Effort, yeah come back from when we talk about, adversity you,
know maybe with mental, game but cancer is like another level.
Again so, yeah for her to get back to win
A Grand, slam that is a remarkable.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
Effort, yeah good on.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Her and beating the world number one women's doubles tennis
Player Taylor, townsend who we've spoken a lot about on the. Pod,
yeah she's said in her postmatch interview that she's had
a great couple of, weeks which he has and probably the. Most,
yeah she's definitely been talked about in her career and
there let's hope she can continue it into twenty twenty.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Six And Carlos, alcarez we've touched on him a couple of,
times sixteen years younger Than, Novak. Djokovic he won in
straight sets, today reaches his eighth final in a, row
and winners were just flying off his, racket and, yeah
you could see the generation, gap the generation coming through
and you Know Novak djokovic of, course still no. Slatch
we'll get to him. Next but, yeah this was a

(10:54):
brilliant performance From.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
Carlos, Yeah carlos is, great he's, young he's.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Fun it's really good for the who Are, YEAH i
Guess i've said it, before BUT i think the fans
wanted to see That alcarez in a final and they're
going to get it for the third time in a. Row,
yeah he's great for the. GAME i saw in his
postmatch celebration he did a golf swing yah to his
Mate Sergio. Garcia, yep who that's the NAME i have

(11:20):
not heard, of not thought about in a, while but,
yeah one of my favorite golfers actually.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
Yeah WHEN i was.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Younger, Yep spaniard as.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Well, yeah, no just, great just great to, See, yeah
him doing so, well AND i think he's really great
for the.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Sport, Yeah rory McElroy was, there so he's got all
of golfing royalty coming out to his. Matches let's get
to stocks down and writing off what some people believe
is to go In Novak DJOKOVIC i. Want this is
part of an article about he's lost To Carlos, alcarez
the first time since twenty seventeen that he's failed to
reach a major final and the latest sign that his

(11:56):
best days are behind.

Speaker 4 (11:57):
Him you're kidding.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
Me any other player outside Of sinner And alcarez would
love to have made the semi final and Every slam
Which novak did this.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Year are they writing him off too?

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Soon AND i agree it's Probably, sinner Al, karaz Then,
djokovic and then the rest of the. Draw DJOKOVIC i
feel like knows his limitations now because he is getting,
older and, yeah with, that having that break from wimbled
and straight into THE Us, OPEN i think he just
really was psyching himself up just to be able to
get through to these later stages of THE Us, open

(12:28):
which he did. Do but these Two sinner and Al,
KARAZ i feel like they're going to.

Speaker 4 (12:34):
Be the next the next big.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Players, well don't feel like they are the next big,
players and it's up to the rest of the drawer
to sort of catch, up all.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Right, well let's hear From novak now his thoughts on
whether he can actually Beat Carlos alcarez Or Janick sinner
at the pointy end Of Grand.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
Slams you, KNOW i lost three out of Four slams
and semis against these, guys so they're they're just too,
good you, know playing on a really high. Level, FORTUNATELY
i ran out of gas after the second. SET i
THINK i had enough energy to battle him and to
keep up with his rhythm for two. Sets after, THAT

(13:14):
i was just guessed, out and you, know he kept
he kept. Going so that's kind of WHAT i felt
this year also With. Yannik, yeah best of five makes
it very very difficult for me to play, them particularly
if it's like the end stages of The Grand. Slam
so that.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
Was novak there and seems kind of realistic about if
everyone's fully, fit it's going to be difficult to knock
Off carlos And yannick best of, five but anything could,
happen AND i feel like he has a bit more
to say at the aoon next, year where he has
dominated the courts Of Melbourne.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
PARK i do feel if he's going to hit that
twenty Fifth Grand, slam it would be at The Australian.
Open it's very close this. Year but, yeah he just
really needs a lot to go right for. Him, maybe,
yeah a draw opening up for him to get straight
to a, final then you, know anything can.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Happen, well let's talk about the men's draw and everyone
outside of the three that we've talked, About, Sinner alcarez And.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
Djokovic that's, Right, yeah that's my stocks.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
DOWN i Guess felix has made the, semifinal but he
didn't have to go Through sinner or Al. Karaz so
it seems to be that in the in the men's,
draw there will Be, Djokovic, siner Al, karaz and then
there's one other spot that they're kind of all fighting
for to make a semi. Final i'm sure it will change,

(14:33):
eventually but, yeah it's just sort of the same three
getting to this sort of stage in the, tournament and
then there's just sort of who was the best of the,
rest just sort of making up the, numbers you could,
say to get that final semifinal.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Spot, yeah what.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Do you think do you think there are any players
that can actually come through and get break through to
this sort.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
Of, WELL i guess a bit Like novak because at
one point we thought it was fatter than The dar
and no one. Else and Then novak didn't come out
of nowhere because he'd showed a lot of promising signs
one Early Australian. Open then took a few years before
he was consistently Winning. Slam so hopefully from An australian,
perspective That's Alex, dimenor but perhaps doesn't quite have the
power to match the big.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
Two in.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
Tennis bag, THIEFS i want to talk about. That in
Stocks down we had the hat, Thief Camille meerchek handing
his hat to a young fan taken by A polish.
Millionaire now there's a bag thief As Yarnick sinner had
Beaten Sasha public in the fourth. Round he's signing, autographs
had his bag over his, shoulder and we might bring
up the image, here the brazenness of this fan trying

(15:38):
to get Into Janick sinner's bag and maybe take a
souvenir like a racquet or a wallet or. Something BUT
i don't know how he thought he was going to
get away from that with that. Ant, yeah when fans
are going to learn, That, yeah their cameras at THE Us.
Open it's security. Guards security. Guards, yet well there's one right.
There it's not a challenger. Tournament it's pretty well. COVERED

(15:59):
i don't, know maybe he was trying to zip up
his bag get. Something i'm not, sure maybe something was
going to fall. Out but, yeah it's not a good
look and it probably won't surprise me that this probably
went with the last time we'll see something like.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
This.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
Yeah, well and, amazingly THE usta decided not to punish the.
Fan they didn't kick him, out which is incredible considering
he was caught red handed right. There you'd think that
fans would have learned after The POLISH ceo hat. Thief
and maybe he said that he was zipping up his.
Bag perhaps let's zip up that. Segment we'll change ends
here and and come back with a preview of the.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
Finals welcome back to The Tennis.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
Mini we've gone through the talking points of The semis
and now we get to the. Finals, brett what match
are you most looking forward? To, WELL i think we
should start with the women's.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
Final this promises to be beauty because if The semis
or anything to go, by this one is definitely going
to go the. Distance Arena sablenka against a man To Anna,
Samova so someone who of course has tasted A Grand
slam success against the player who we spoke, about and
this will will really see now the demons of wimbled
and whether they. Resurface she got through some tough quarters

(17:12):
and Semis Amanda Anna. Samova but what do you think
is going to happen with her on the big stage
In New york in front of her home.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Fans, YEAH i think she definitely want to get that
first game on the board as quickly as she, can
Say sablenca serves first and holds her serve and then
say said la brain breaks the next. GAME i think
pressure will just build right, up so hopefully she can serve.
First IF i was, Her i'd probably serve first and
just win that first. Game and that was sort of
just sort of take that pressure off that six, love six,

(17:39):
love which seems to be following, her following her. Around but,
YEAH i think she can overcome her. Nerves she's shown
she's got the shots to match it with anyone in
the women's. Game and, Yeah, sebilenka she's got number. One
she's a good. Player BUT i DON'T i don't think

(18:01):
Anism over can match. It just with the experience she's
got In Grand slam, finals she'd be really hungry to
win one for this year as.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
Well, Yeah i'm Picking. Sablenka what's your, Pick? Bret all, Right,
Well i'll go For Amanda. Addisimova looking at their head
to head record AND i know this is A Grand
slam final In Grand, slam so she leads six to,
three three two In grand, slams two to one on hard.
Court she's from the same hometown As Bruce, springsteen The

(18:32):
boss who you're dressed a little bit Like, Freehold New.
Jersey i'm gonna say she's gonna boss her home court
At Flushing Meadows Arthur Rash stadium and get the win
in three. Sets will it go the distance or do
you Think arena in straight?

Speaker 4 (18:44):
Sets? NO i think it can go the.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
DISTANCE i did say a stat the other day, though
That sablanca has never or AND i think like one
hundred or something, games she's never lost The Grand slam
match in straight.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
Sets, wow that's incredible. Stat, Yeah, okay she's got some,
resolve and we saw that she'll pull out all the
tricks like she did With bagula and take a time
out if she needs. To so you're Going, Sabolenka, Yes
i'm going at A. Samova, okay this is the final
that a lot probably expected WHAT i think the fans.
Wanted Janick, Sinner Carlos. Alcarraz who do you think the

(19:17):
crowd will be? Supporting that is a good. QUESTION i
reckon it would be pretty much fifty to. Fifty there
are a lot Of italian fans In New. York, yeah
That carlos has great CHARISMA i, think and creativity with
his shot.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
PLAY i. DON'T i reckon it would be fifty to.
Fifty sorry to stay on the fence.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
With that, one BUT i think it'll Be, ALKARAZ i
think clearly Because, Sinner, YEAH i mean contrasting, personalities contrasting.
Games we did See sinner with it between the leg
shot Against Felix Augia elia sim But ALCAREZ i think
might be the people's favorite in this.

Speaker 4 (19:51):
Game.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
Yeah he does have The Corona boys though as, well
so he brings a cheer squad with.

Speaker 4 (19:56):
Him they come.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Down, YEAH i would probably lean To, yeah the crowd
probably would be maybe On alcoraz's, side but, yeah just
with that That felix, match that taking that medical time
outs kind of got me a bit. Spooked we haven't
got no. Reports we've pretty much gone straight to where
after the match. Finished we've got don't know what he

(20:18):
said in the press conference or anything yet about his potential.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Injury he just said on court that there was nothing
to worry, about but he was pretty, vague so who.
Knows as we, said when he cools, down it might be.
Different but, yeah we want to see this one go
to five, Sets so you want to see go to five.
Sets but who are you? Tipping then sounds like you're
going with The.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Spaniard.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yeah if it is definitely nothing to worry about With sinner's,
Injury i'd Go. Sinner but if he's got if he
has to get treatment in the next couple of, DAYS
i reckon they're so, close they're so even THAT i.

Speaker 4 (20:49):
Would tip the scales In alcaraz's.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
Favor this is the same men's pairing facing off in
Three slam finals in a calendar year that doesn't. Happened
there's nineteen sixty Four ms And Fred, stoley a couple Of.
Australians you'd think With, Novak federer And nadhal that we
would have had three in a calendar, year but we,
haven't so this is going to be. Huge it's five
to nine in favor of Elca. Az they Split wimbledon

(21:14):
and The. FRENCH i am going to go With alcarez,
THOUGH i think as, well so go with the same.
Pick i'm going to say in four, sets, okay, yeah
but it should be an absolute.

Speaker 4 (21:22):
Cracker, yeah definitely an absolute. CRACKER i WISH i had
a ticket to this.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
Match, yeah oh for. Sure imagine what they're. Worth alcros
has dropped a.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
Set we saw A yannick dropper set Against Felix augia
elism so can't wait for. That, well thank you and
Aka Lorenzo mazzetti for dressing up today the great intro
and helping us preview the.

Speaker 2 (21:43):

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
