Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is time. Well the game day dubs for the
Panthers and the Falcons, week number eleven in the National
Football League, Panthers at five and five playing a Falcon
team that is three and six. Panthers won the initial
contest thirty to nothing, and Panthers looking for a sweep
(00:25):
of the Falcons for the first time in about a
dozen years. The Who, What, When, Where and why with
the game day Dubs on a Friday found Dez what's
first up?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
All right, we'll start with the who willie who will
need to step up the most on this team?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Who is not named Bryce Young?
Speaker 1 (00:45):
So this has to be an offensive player. I'm not
gonna say Rico Dowell because I don't think the problems
that took place last week were anything necessarily having to.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Do with him.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Xavier League is my answer, because I think for the
most part this season, we've had a lot of questions
about Xavier League get and I think it's incredibly evident
to me that there isn't a wide receiver on this
team that Bryce Young trusts the level of Teteroa McMillan.
I know that Cocher has had a little bit of
(01:21):
a come up lately, but xavierly Get this season has
thirty eight targets and twenty catches for two touchdowns. That
is a shockingly, shockingly low number for a guy who
was your leading receiver last year and for somebody who
had somebody come in at his position.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
It needs to be better from him.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
And I know a lot of people will sit here
and say, well, you know, is Bryce not getting in
the football? The touchdown catch that wasn't last week I
think was incredibly glaring from an error standpoint. I thought
you need to make that catch, thought the game up
on the route too early, and I think it's a
(02:07):
crisis of confidence for Xavier league Get. I'm not calling
him Johnny Bingo, I'm not calling him Terrist Marshall junior.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
But you need to look like the guy that we drafted.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Is basically the way I feel, and if the Panthers
passing game is going to work, he needs to have
another outlet outside of t Mac. He needs to have
another outlet outside of Jail and Cocher, maybe even the
tight ends too.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Like Got.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
When Bryce is doing well, he's spreading the football to
multipard receivers. This is not a great fantasy wide receiver group.
But if zaber leaguet can do something to stretch the
passing game, get the coverage away from Tedroll McMillan, maybe
that helps out Bryce a little bit, particularly early.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
I agree with you. I like that.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
I think he definitely needs to be the guy that
steps up. I mean, look at this passing game and
you just need somebody that's gonna be able to do
something downfield, win downfield.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
He's supposed to be the guy that can do that.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Maybe you'd point to tedor Roa McMillan and expect him
to start doing that a little bit more. But I
definitely think it starts and ends with Xavier Leguat. You
can't have three catches in three weeks. That just can't
happen for a starting wide receiver that is being counted
on to play as many snaps as he is.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Stanford Pe brings up a good one. Mike Jack.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
He's somebody who certainly will definitely command a lot of attention,
particularly if they try to keep Drake London away from J. C. Horn.
Kyle Pitts as well might end up getting some attention
from Mike Jack.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
This is a big week for Mike Jack.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, because he played well in the first matchup between
these two sides.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Now, part of that was because the Panthers were getting.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
A lot of pressure, but I think that that's far
from a guarantee with this group. You need him to
be really solid in this game, especially actually because Drake
London's playing some really good football right now.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Max said, uh, they're not using him right crossers, flanks,
get it in his hands differently, Here's the thing. I
don't know if he's I don't know if he's the
wide receiver screen guy, like he needs to be the
stretch the field guy. Yes, he needs he needs to
be the guy who you say, to heck with it.
I'm going deep kind of what what what Schuck did
(04:25):
last week where they just said, you know what, we
know you can't stop us deep. We're gonna throw it
and try and stretch the field. Now, granted, the paints
have to be able to block for it, prices to
be able to get it over the line. There's a
lot of other factors outside of that, but they're.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Not even taking those shots. What zavierly get? What's next?
All right?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
The what what did last week tell us about how
Dave can Alice views his quarterback?
Speaker 1 (04:45):
He hed told us that he has wavering faith in
Bryce Show and he can redeem himself and eschew that
belief with a more diverse game plan for the Atlanta Falcons.
This is the team that over the course of his career,
(05:07):
Bryce Young has done the best against. The Week eighteen
matchup was probably his best game of his NFL career.
We talked about it earlier in the program. I think
it was a quarterback rating of one twenty four point
nine against the against the Falcons of the twenty four
Oh sorry, what's my three point five? The earlier game
(05:29):
last year against the Falcons, he did not play. That
was a game that Andy played. But in twenty four
he was very very good in that game. And in
twenty twenty three. While the first one it was a loss,
the second one he ended up getting a victory. He's
done very very well against the Falcons. I think this
(05:50):
needs to be a game where you see that kind
of Week eighteen type contest from Bryce Young. And I
also think you need to see Dave Knalis be more creative.
Scheme guys, like, what was the one thing we heard
about from Dave Canalis when it comes to what he
was We told we were heard it was a quarterback
whisper and a dude who can scheme guys open. I'm
(06:11):
not seeing that. I'm seeing a lot of out routes.
I'm seeing a lot of comebacks. I'm seeing a lot
of things that, quite frankly, aren't putting the quarterback in
a position where he's trying to elevate the rest of
the team.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
I mean, yeah, I get it to a certain extent, yes,
but remember that we were only a few weeks removed
from Louke Keigley saying that he was a guy he
really respected what Dave Canalis was doing because Dave Canallis
was keeping him on his toes, he didn't even know
what was coming. So I do think that there are
moments like that that we see from Canallis. Maybe he
(06:44):
did become a little more conservative last week because he
thought that with the conservative game plan they would be
able to win. But also, man, these guys just have
to be able to create separation. Sure, like you've got
to be able to get open. And Jalen Coker, I
don't know what's going on with Jalen Coker. I don't know,
you know. Poker says that he sees him open a lot.
I don't necessarily see the same thing, but I think
(07:06):
that's a guy that's really got to get back to
play in the way that he played at the end
of last year, because if you get that version of
Jalen Cooker, that's going to help your quarterback out and
then you really have no excuses for Bryce.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Do you think Bryce is gun shy?
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Maybe maybe maybe that is part of it, And I
hope that's not the case because I'm.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Hoping eleven touchdown send interception season.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
This is the thing that people need to understand. I
want Bryce Young to be the guy because that's the
easiest solution for the Panthers.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
It's just that he turns out to be the guy.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
And I think if you're if you're a Panther fan
and don't believe the same, then I don't think you're
really a Panther fan.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
I think you're an anti Bryce person. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
I think if you're a Panther fan and aren't rooting
for Bryce showing to beat a solution, I think that's
foolhardy because there is there is no easier solution to
the in air quotes quarterback question.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
That way, all right, The when when the Panthers run it,
will the Falcons have an answer?
Speaker 4 (08:06):
I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
I think this is one of the worst run defenses
the Panthers have seen all year, and you saw it
in the earlier part of the season. I mean, this
was part of why the Panthers just completely ran it
all over the Falcons earlier this year. When it comes
(08:28):
to the Atlanta defense thirty first in the league in
percentage of opposing run plays, which means they're behind a
lot and teams run it well against them, they give
up four point nine yards a rush one hundred and
forty six per game. Those are both bottom five in
the league. There are a lot better amans the pass.
(08:52):
And again, this might seem empathetical to what I was
talking about earlier, because while I think you need to
have Bryce gains some confidence in this game, the path
to victory here is you need to be able to
run the football against the Atlanta fountains, just period stop.
And I know that after what we saw last week,
it might feel like you're reving your head against the wall.
(09:14):
But this team just came up. I think it was
one hundred and seventy eight yards of Jonathan Taylor. They
were very bad in Berlin, and quite frankly, they tried
to hand Indianapolis that game under multiple auspices and occasions,
and the Colts did not take it until late fourth
quarter and overtime.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
It's because the Colts are overrated, That's what I think.
But yeah, no, it's a good point. It's a good point.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
I mean, they had multiple times where they could have
stopped this Colts offense and Jonathan Taylor just goes wild.
Now here's the thing. Do I think that Rico Daudle
is Jonathan Taylor. No, Jonathan Taylor should be this league's MVP.
He is playing at that type of level.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
But so the Colts are overrated, but Jonathan Taylor is
the MVP.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
I think that is true.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
I think as of right now, with the numbers that
he's putting up, Yes, But I do think that when
they get to the playoffs ultimately Daniel Jones will probably
come up short in one of those games, turn the
ball over a little bit too much and they will lose.
But back to the Panther side of it, I mean
with Rico, I think he's going to be able to
do enough in this game. You go back to that
(10:21):
first game, that was one of the most successful games
that Chuba Hubbard had this season, and so I think
that they are going to be able to use Rico
pretty decent amount. I get it, You've got to manage
that quad injury, so you'll probably see Chube in there.
And sometimes you should be able to run on this team.
And you're right, even though you want to see it
from Bryce. The way to do that is not to
(10:43):
force him to have to throw the ball all the time.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
That doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
You lean on your strengths, lean into the strengths of
your offense, and see if he can assimilate to the
offense himself. So I think hopefully this is a game
where they do come out with that plan to run
the football heavy until the Falcons show that they can
stop it and really open up the passing game off
of it, because I think that was part of the
(11:08):
reason why the passing game was.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
So bad a week ago.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
What's next? All right?
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Hold on, I went off my screen for a second.
Where where do the Falcons scare you?
Speaker 4 (11:20):
So?
Speaker 1 (11:21):
I don't know if I believe that the Falcons pass
defense is just so good because they're run defense is
so bad and you're dealing with more limited opportunities, but
they are sixth in the league.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
And takeaways per contest.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
They are first in the league of allowing the least
amount of passing yards per contest, and they're also second
second in the league in passes per game and also
second in sack percentage. So from that perspective, that gives
you at least a little bit of a fear factor
in if the Panthers cannot contain the pressure and Bryce
(11:58):
has no time to throw when he has to, it
could mean a very, very low scoring game on a
long day for the Panther offense, particularly if they cannot
run it vis a vis what happened last week. Also,
Jean Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitts, those are always going
to scare me when I know what they're going up against.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Kyle Pitts really scares you.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Because I just don't know if they have somebody who
I trust was going to match up with it, because.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
They've been better against tight ends recently, so I'm not
necessarily as worried.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Juwan Johnson had a big play in the game this
past week, but Kyle Pitts, there's It's not the point
of being scared of.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
It's not about Kyle necessarily, It's more about the Panthers
versus the title.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Does Drake London not scare you more?
Speaker 1 (12:45):
I said Drake London, I said, I said, Drake London.
I gave I gave you, I gave you the list,
I said, Bejeon, Drake and Kyle Pitts.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Oh, my bad, my bad, I said all three of them.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
But I would say I'm scared of all three of them.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Now here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
You're not to the quarterback that's getting them the football though,
so that could certainly help you in this game.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Now much so are they going to be able to.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Get them off as off schedule as they were in
the first game of the season here, that's a question.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
But I do think you're right.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
You do worry about this offensive line holding up against
that front, which is really starting to get after that point.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
And I also think that they rattled Pennix with the
pick six early and I think if if he's allowed
to get some confident throws early, that doesn't poor tend
well for the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
All Right, the why why are people making this a
make or break game for Bryce?
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Because it is because this is the last best opportunity.
We talked about it earlier in the show. This is
the last best opportunity with the schedule being the way
it is, for him to get confidence. I don't know
if it happens against the San Francisco forty nine ers,
I don't know if it happens on the road at
New Orleans. Maybe it can, but we showed when I
(14:01):
basically everything was in front of you and you played
a very bad New Orleans team and you laid nag
at home. You can't project that you're going to go
out on the road and do it there. Don't think
it happens in either Buccaneer game. I don't think it
happens against the Seattle Seahawks, despite them having to come
west to east. This is the last best opportunity for
Bryce Young to get confidence toward a very I would
(14:25):
say I wouldn't say difficult, but it's a it's a
calculated final six games. You don't have a sure win
on the schedule. In the final six games, You've got
to toss up two other divisional games and games that
you probably would be either projected to lose or another
toss up with Seattle, So there's not and not to
(14:45):
say that this is a sure win, but this is
probably the one game that at least tilts the most
towards you outside of the New Orleans game remaining on
your schedule, and if it does not happen here, it's
very hard to project that it happens anywhere else.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Well, because the other thing is is if you go
into the game against New Orleans and let's say he
has a great performance in that game, You're just going
to say to yourself, well, New Orleans is a horrible
football team. This team, I don't think they're horrible. I
think that they have lost a lot of close games.
They are a team that I don't think has the
greatest quarterback play. But still this defense is going to
(15:21):
test him. So if Bryce Young comes out puts up
a great performance, then we can sit back and finally say, ah,
that's what we needed. We needed that moment of relief.
So well we'll see.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
Man.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
I think this is kind of just knowing Bryce, We've
been through this roller coaster the last few years. I
think this will be a game where he will come
out and perform well. Things will swing back in the
other direction and people will say, well, look man, he's
winning these close games.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
You know this is something that we got to value.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
And later on in the year he'll have another game
that'll leave you scratch in your head and we'll be
right back to the same spot.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
That's what you're gonna deal with with Bryce.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
He can't completely Men in Black style mind scramble the
bad parts of his past from me with a good
game on Sunday, but he can at least give me
the first fruits of Hey, this is me turning it
around with a good game on Sunday.
