‘Un bel dì, vedremo…’ In haar ontroerende aria verlangt de Japanse Cio-Cio-San, die liefkozend Butterfly genoemd wordt, naar de mooie dag waarop ze haar Amerikaanse echtgenoot Pinkerton weer zal zien. Haar liefdevolle toewijding is echter niet wederzijds. Pinkerton keert na enkele jaren terug naar Japan, maar heeft nu een Amerikaanse vrouw aan zijn zijde. Bovendien werd Butterfly vanwege haar interculturele huwelijk verstoten door haar traditionele familie. De eervolle Butterfly ziet haar droom van een ander leven veranderen in een nachtmerrie, die enkel tragisch kan aflopen.
Aan het einde van de 19e eeuw ontstond een ware hype rond de Japanse cultuur in het Westen. Giacomo Puccini liet zich inspireren door het land van de rijzende zon zoals het in Europa gepercipieerd werd en gebruikte zelfs Japanse klanken en instrumenten in zijn meeslepende en emotionele muziekdrama. De Argentijnse regisseur Mariano Pensotti laat alle folklore in Puccini's meesterwerk achter zich en reflecteert over de constructie van een eigen identiteit door de ogen van de ander.
