We take supplements every day to gethealthy,
but what if the very one that is meant tohelp actually harms?
I am Dr Kiat.
Let's go heart to heart.
We're going to talk about vitamin B6today.
An amazing essential nutrient but in highdoses will cause real damage.

(00:27):
Vitamin B6 or pyridoxin is an essentialvitamin.
Your body cannot make it so you have toget it from food.
The active form of vitamin B6,pyridoxal 5-phosphate acts as a coenzyme
in over 140 vital chemical reactions inour body.

(00:47):
From making energy and brain chemicals tosupporting your immune system.
It is small but very critical for oursurvival.
It is found in plenty of everyday foods, think chicken, tuna, bananas, potatoes,
sweet potatoes,chickpeas and whole grains.

(01:10):
You only need around 1.3 milligram a day.
For perspective,a drop of water is 50 milligram.
Tiny dose, vital for survival.
Most of us eating a decent diet getenough vitamin B6.

(01:31):
But guess what?
According to data from the NIH,around one in three people also take
vitamin B6 as a supplement.
People take vitamin B6 supplement in theform of multivitamin pills,
B complex supplements and as a standalone B6 supplement.

(01:55):
Surprising?
Maybe. Common?
Absolutely.
Recently in Australia, some people develop nerve problems after
taking common supplements.
They develop numbness, burning and pain in feet and legs,
sometimes on the hands, even difficulty walking.

(02:20):
These are classic symptoms of peripheralneuropathy caused by too much vitamin B6.
Here's the strange part. These supplements came with no warning in
Australia.
They didn't need to list the risks unlessthe vitamin B6 dose was over 50 milligram

(02:44):
per tablet.
If your total vitamin B6 adds up to morethan 10 milligram per day and you're
taking it long term, make damn sure you have a good medical
reason for it.
This isn't about fear,it's about making smart choices for your

(03:07):
health.
So here's a takeaway.
If you're going to take supplements, treat them as medicine.
Be intentional,Know why you're taking them,
what results you expect, track the effects,

(03:29):
and bring your doctor into the loop.
I don't take supplements just in case,I take them for a specific purpose.
I monitor the results and stop if itdoesn't help,
and I'm here to help you with that kindof clarity and care every step of the way.
