Als große Industriestadt sind Duisburg und seine Verbraucher heute noch insbesondere auf fossile Energieträger auch im Wärmebereich angewiesen. Die Stadtwerke Duisburg setzen aber bereits heute innovative Wärmewendeprojekte um und haben das ambitionierte Ziel die Fernwärmeversorgung bereits 2035 gänzlich klimaneutral umgebaut zu haben.
