Ce ar fi dacă Uniunea Europeană ar trebui să se aprovizioneze singură cu materii prime critice? Folosite în tehnologii de vârf, pământurile rare și metalele rare sunt acele elemente care, la nivelul scoarței terestre, se găsesc în concentrații mai mici de 1%.
Uniunea Europeană este dependentă de importuri din China, Turcia și Africa de Sud, deoarece unele materii prime critice fie nu există, fie nu mai sunt extrase pe bătrânul continent. În 2023, executivul comunitar a prezentat Actul European privind materiile prime critice, după care Parlamentul și Consiliul au convenit asupra unei acord informal pentru ca mai multe materii prime rare să fie extrase, procesate și reciclate în Uniunea Europeană.
Ștefan Baciu, jurnalist la Radio România Internațional, a discutat despre extracția, prelucrarea și materiilor prime critice cu europarlamentarul Nicu Ștefănuță, vicepreședinte al Parlamentului European și membru al Comisiei pentru Industrie, Cercetare și Energie și cu Dumitru Turbăceanu, primarul comunei Baia de Fier, unde se află cel mai mare sit de grafit din Europa.
