(00:00):
Hi.
Welcome to
Helping Families
go beyond the podcast
by Beyond the Spectrum.
I'm your host, Loryn Carpenter,
and I'm excited to be here today.
Our organization has wanted
to start this podcast
to share essential information
with families
as we've always served their students.
And we'd now like to be
a stronger resource
for the entire family.
This subject is important to me

(00:21):
personally
because my brother Scotty has autism
and he was actually
the first be on the spectrum student
when our doors opened.
He's now 26 and it's amazing
to see how he has flourished
during his time here.
I believe people would benefit
from knowing more
about how to accommodate our individuals
and their unique interests and abilities.
So our goal for
this podcast

(00:41):
will be to spread awareness
on these important topics,
to give you a little more information
about Beyond the Spectrum.
We're a nonprofit private school
and therapy center
serving students five through 22,
located in Manatee and Sarasota County.
We were founded in 2007
by Catherine and Chris Peabody,
who have a son of their own with autism.

(01:02):
So this has always been
an important mission for them.
At Beyond the Spectrum,
we provide specialized academic
and therapeutic services
for students with Autism, Down
syndrome,
and other intellectual
or developmental disabilities.
We currently have two ABA
therapy clinics.
We have one on site
and one recently established
in Port Charlotte,

(01:22):
which is very exciting news.
And we have the newly launched
job and life skills program
for young adults
called Helping Individuals
through Vocation and Enrichment
or H.I.V.E.
Some of the main goals
of Helping Families
Go Beyond will be to explain
the various interventions
that we provide for our individuals.
We'll be having important conversations
with some of our service providers,

(01:43):
like our teachers and our speech music,
mental health, ABA
and occupational therapists.
We've got a pretty busy place
around here,
and we will also be discussing
the important processes for caregivers,
such as applying for med
waiver guardianship,
state scholarship
funding, advocacy and financial planning,

(02:03):
which will all be important chapters
for individuals as they get older.
We'll be having conversations
with parents, siblings,
caregivers and individuals
about their journeys
in welcoming their knowledge here
at helping families go beyond.
And we'll also be sharing
additional community resources
by featuring other nonprofit
groups with similar missions.
We're excited to get this started

(02:24):
and to share more information
with their families.
And we look forward to you all tuning in.
Thank you.
