(00:00):
Okay.
and welcome to In Your Element withKathleen Keneally, licensed Acupuncturist
and healer This is my very firstpodcast and, we're here today to
talk about, a little bit of Chinesemedicine, a little bit of a thought
for the day, a little inspiration, and pretty much whatever comes up,
(00:22):
So, I'm Kathleen Kenneally withKenneally Acupuncture and, we are going
to be talking today a little bit aboutthis transition that we're , moving
into spring and in Chinese medicinethere are five elements, actually.
Wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
And we are leaving the water elementof winter And we are about a week
away from the beginning of, the springseason, the spring Equinox or Equinox.
(00:46):
And.
That is when we have equal amounts oflight and dark , and there's another
time that it happens, and that's in fall.
But here we are coming intospring and all the fresh starts.
Spring energy is about waking up, andwe have been in hibernation, or we were
supposed to be in hibernation during thewinter time, and I'm sure many of you
are rolling your eyes at me now thinking, yeah, hibernation, what's that all about?
(01:08):
but in nature, that's what happens.
Everything slows down.
Everything pulls inward But.
Ideally, that's what this energy ofwinter is about, is about restoring
and recharging and taking time out togo within to figure out what our plans
are as we leap into the spring seasonand now we're coming out of that.
(01:28):
We're waking up.
and really technically interms of Chinese medicine and
other cultures, if you will.
The spring season is really the new year.
It's the beginning of the life cycle.
It's the beginningof, all the fresh starts.
This is when the seeds are planting, thisis when the babies are born . This is when
all this wonderful stuff is coming alive.
And so all those New Year'sresolutions that you and put
(01:52):
in in January, guess what?
This is the time now that you're supposedto actually put them into action.
because as we move into spring, thatenergy supports us in realizing the
things that we wish to put into action.
And so this is just a reallypotent, exciting time, and frankly,
it's my favorite time of year.
I love spring.
(02:13):
So
in Chinese medicine.
the season of spring is connected to theelement of wood and, Our liver, which
is the organ, liver, and gallbladder, the organs that are associated with
this time of year with this woodelement begins to get a little sluggish.
And so.
When the energy surges through usfrom the spring, then the liver's
(02:34):
like, oh, I better jump into actionnow and I'm gonna start detoxing.
Well, it's hasn't been doing thatvery well, and so it obviously,
it needs a little bit of helpand support during this time.
And so that's what's happening.
So you might feel a little cranky.
You might feel a little irritable becauseyour body is working a little bit harder.
So again, it's the wood element.
(02:54):
the color green.
We've got, the liver and the gallbladder.
And interestingly enough, each, of these, elements also
have an active period of time.
And this is kind of an interesting sidenote, is that the time of the day that's
connected to the liver and gallbladderis from 11:00 PM until 3:00 AM And
so what I find in my practice, whichis always fascinating, but it gives
(03:18):
me information, is that when peoplehave sleep issues, when they're having
trouble sleeping or they have insomnia, more often than not people are waking
up between 1:00 AM and AM this isthe time and this is the liver time.
So what does that tell me?
As a practitioner, it tells me thatthat person's got a lot of stress,
(03:38):
that their system is stressed out.
Now if I ask 'em about it, they maynot acknowledge that, or they're
like, no, I'm not stressed... Becauseon some level, we as a society
and as individuals have completelynormalized being totally maxed out.
Like this is our normal way ofbeing is that we are stressed out.
(03:58):
And so we've normalized it.
So we're not even noticing the signalsthat our body is trying to tell us.
It says, Hey, help stop.
Slow down, take a nap, drink some water.
and so it's just really fascinatingto be able to kind of see the signs.
it could be just your liverletting you know that it is.
working harder now to help your bodydetox and detoxify, So some of the things
(04:24):
that are really beneficial to kind ofhelp that help the liver along with
all of this is that, for example, youknow, when you wake up in the morning
and you're feeling , you know, groggy, Imean, how do you feel when you wake up?
Groggy, tired, hard to get up.
And again, some of that could be partof the winter energy and now that we're
in spring, we're getting a little moresunlight and a lot of people will get up
(04:44):
and the first thing they do is they getup and they make that cup of coffee and
they get that caffeine to start their day.
So what I'm gonna gonna suggest toyou is that instead of jumping up and
getting your cup of coffee, I'm gonnasuggest that you first have a nice
glass of room temperature water, andthen follow that with another glass.
It doesn't have to be a hugeglass, maybe eight ounces.
(05:07):
another glass of room, temperaturewater with a squeeze of half a lemon.
Half a lemon in the water.
Drink that on an empty stomach firstthing in the morning, and what that does
is it's gonna help your liver detox!
It's gonna help your liver detox.
And so that's really the way.
Now if you choose, do you still wanna, and, and part of that sluggishness
is also your, your system's justtrying to wake up and it's sluggish.
(05:30):
And so the lemon water helps yourliver do what it needs to do.
Now if you still decideto have your coffee.
So be it.
But what I'm suggesting, you know now, beginning now is have a half a lemon
or a whole lemon in a glass of roomtemperature water to start your day
before you start having your caffeine.
'cause here's the deal withcaffeine, and I know again, eyes
(05:52):
are rolling, is that caffeine?
Um.
let's just back up a little bit.
most people that I encounter inmy practice and in our society
are, maxed out one way or another.
They are working too much.
They've, they're stay at home moms.
They've got, they're running ahousehold from people that have
businesses, single moms, the, the gamut.
(06:14):
Most people, and we just havenormalized this level of stress.
We've normalized it.
This is kind of just how it goes.
And so what happens is.
Is when we are feeling fatigued, oftentimes people drop... two things:
they go to sugar and they go to caffeine.
And, what both of those things dois they beat up our adrenal glands.
(06:36):
Now why is that a big deal?
Because our adrenal glands are actuallypart of our system that where we draw some
energy and they're really designed forus to escape from, you know, the dinosaur
that's trying to eat us, basically.
And so what's happening, becauseeverybody's so maxed out, is
that our adrenal glands are pumppumping adrenaline all the time.
And so when you take a hit ofcaffeine to wake up, when you take
(07:00):
some sugar in the afternoon to wakeup, basically you're, you're beating
up your adrenal glands and they'realready working really, really hard.
So.
Again, that's for a greater explanationon another time, but I kind of wanted
to bring that into the conversationbecause all of this is now in play.
You're stressed out, you're coming,your body's trying to detox.
(07:21):
We're throwing more stuff in there toartificially get it to have energy.
And so my goal is to give you tipsso that you can find other ways to
actually balance out your energydetoxify in a natural and gentle way,
and to overall have better energy.
You know something else I wantedto talk about, little bit.
(07:42):
We were talking a lot about the liver, and I have mentioned the liver and the
gallbladder, because in Chinese medicinethey're both part of the wood element
and they're actually paired organs.
I kind of like to thinkof them as brothers, but.
The thing about the gallbladder is that, the gallbladder is actually the planner.
The gallbladder is the one thatmakes the decisions and says,
okay, we're gonna go here.
(08:03):
We're gonna do this.
They're the one thatactually blocks out the plan.
And then the liver has the energy andthe drive to see the plan through.
And so you can see that boththese parts are so essential, to
actually getting anything done andaccomplishing anything in our lives.
And, and so it's important to recognizethat this, if one side of it is not,
(08:26):
so, for example, again, how that mightshow up in my practice, I'm talking to
somebody and I have an extensive, intakewhere I get a lot of information that
you wouldn't normally see at a regularor traditional doctor's office, and so.
One of the questions is, youknow, are, are you indecisive?
And so that's a key thing because whenpeople have problems making decisions,
(08:50):
and you know, and I, you probably knowsomebody, maybe somebody listening
knows this about themselves, thatthey have the hardest time making a
decision, making a choice, that thatis an imbalance within the gallbladder.
And so again, these are just littlethings, little, There's so much
more to it, but this is just to kindof give you an idea and a, taste
(09:10):
of little ways to kind of go, wow.
Yeah, I'm way indecisive and Wow.
Okay.
That tells me that mygallbladder needs some support.
Um, of course, on the physical level, gallbladder issues are digestive issues,
Gallbladder releases bile, which actslike a detergent that breaks down the
fat, the fats that we eat and consume.
So when people have a hard timedigesting fats, again, that could be
(09:33):
some gallbladder... Gallbladder needssome support 'cause it's not able
to properly produce this detergent,if you will, to break the fats down.
So again, I just wanted to bringup and talk a little bit about the
gallbladder energy and how it works in.
And hand in hand with the liver.
And they're both really, reallyimportant for us to, feel productive
and feel on, track and moving forward.
(09:55):
And so moving into spring, thisis the beginning of this next,
season and this next chapter in,the Healing Journey of the year.
So with that, I'm gonna take a break andwe'll be back minute So I don't know
if any of you out there have heard ofseasonal acupuncture, but this is a type
of treatment that I have been doing forover 22 years here in my practice actually
(10:19):
here in Santa Clarita four times a year.
And And the seasonal acupunctureis a. Pretty awesome treatment.
It's simple.
It's powerful and it'svery straightforward.
And what it basically is designed todo is to plug you into the energy of
the season that we're moving into.
So for example, we areleaving the winter season.
and we are moving into the spring.
(10:41):
And so what I do with these treatments, ifyou come to my spring seasonal acupuncture
event, if you will, or you get a springseasonal treatment, is I'm activating the.
Wood element points within your bodyso that you're energetically just
already plugged into the, the spring.
And so why do we wanna do that?
Is because already we aremaking that transition.
(11:04):
Some of you might be feeling thedifference now that suddenly you're
like, oh, I'm waking up, that youwe're feeling the change already.
and also what happens is that.
People's allergies flare up, people startpicking up, bugs and flu and, getting
colds, during this time of transition.
And, see it a lot, you know, oftentimesright around now about a week before
(11:25):
the season turns and I see a lot ofpeople starting to get colds or their
allergies are flaring up and so on.
So.
Essentially these treatments are designedto make that transition a lot easier.
The body doesn't have to work so hardand it's improves people's allergies.
It improves them feeling more balancedand harmonious and really able to
activate the energy of the season.
(11:45):
So I really, highly recommendand invite everybody who's
listening to come and experiencea seasonal acupuncture treatment.
And I do these treatments, I'm doingthese treatments coming up from March
16th through the 23rd, so that is theweek that I'm doing the, the treatments.
And on the 16th is a Sunday, andthat's the day that I'm treating.
(12:09):
I treat 50 plus people.
I put two to four people in a spaceto get their treatments together
so you can come with your friends.
I have families that comeand get a group treatment.
And then I also have vendors.
I have, um, all kinds offun things going on as well.
Vendors, we have crystals.
We have, oh gosh, what do we have jewelry.
(12:29):
We have someone doing readings.
Um, it's just a really, really wonderfuland fun thing to come and experience.
So that goes from 9:00 AM to aboutthree 4:00 PM in the afternoon.
so yeah, I invite you all to comeand join us and come hang out and
have a wonderful, wonderful day.
And it's at Kenneally Acupuncture,it's at my office for more information,
(12:50):
call 6 6 1 2 5 2 4100 or you can lookon my website to get more information.
It's keneally acupuncture.com.
Okay, so we're back from our break and Ithought I would just take a few minutes
and talk a little bit about Chinesemedicine since that is my medicine and in
relation to the wood element and the liverif you think of the energy of wood, right?
(13:13):
You think of trees, uprightstanding, you know, bold, and when
the wood energy is out of balance.
What that looks like and what that showsup in terms of human beings is that you
think of a tree being really, reallystrong and standing tall, but if it's
out of balance, then it's rigid thatit won't bend if the wind is blowing,
(13:34):
it's so rigid and structured and stuck.
I mean, it's another way of beingstuck if we're not able to move,
as things come into our lives.
And so when someone finds themselfbeing very rigid and very stuck and
very You know, almost from a standpointof almost being angry, like there's
an energy of like, I'm right andthis is the only way and and so on.
(13:56):
That's a really immovable thing.
So that's a tree that's, boy, you geta big enough wind, it's gonna break.
And so again, ideally we want a balancedwood energy, and a balanced wood energy
looks like that... there... it goes, the wind comes up and it bends and
it flows and it's flexible and 'causewood in its most balanced state is like
that's when your wood is like, you're able to make a plan.
(14:18):
You're able to, um, it's like the general,if you think about a general in the
army, and he's like, all right, let's go.
Here's the plan and here we're gonna go.
And they execute that plan brilliantly.
So when our, we need our wood, weneed that wood energy be balanced
so that we can get stuff done.
And it's really, really important.
And so again, if it's outof balance, then we have no
(14:41):
motivation, we have no inspiration.
We're not feeling like doing anything.
And so it's, it's really, you can see the difference.
It's like if your wood is strugglingright now, that energy within you.
Then again, you're gonna have not asmuch motivation to get things done
to take care of business to, again,go with the flow and see what the,
be flexible with whatever shows up.
(15:03):
So those are some of the things.
Now, on a physical level, like.
For example, the wood element isconnected to the tendons in the body.
And so if people come in and theyhave tendonitis, um, or they have that
kind of inflammation, that again, as apractitioner we'll say, I'll think, Hmm,
okay, let me check other, other signs tosee what's going on with the wood energy.
(15:28):
So again, springtime is where these typesof things might show up, for example.
You might feel more irritable.
Again, we've already talkedabout that a little bit.
You might notice that your tendonsare a little tight or that you're not
feeling as flexible as you'd like to be.
it's also, about how motivatedyou are to get things done.
(15:50):
Where's your drive your interest?
Where is your clarity to kindof see how to move forward, and
execute whatever's in front of you.
So.
These are the kind of things that, again, as a practitioner, and I'm
talking to somebody and I'm listeningto them, and I listen a lot.
I know it sounds like I talk a lot becausethat's what I'm doing right now, but I
listen a lot and I'm listening, and if Ihear in somebody's, again, the tone, the
(16:11):
sound of someone's voice, someone comesin and, they sound like they're shouting.
I kid you not, they could be talking ina normal tone but their voice, if you're
listening, it sounds like shouting.
And that also is a sign to me that, something's going on with that
liver/ wood energy in their body.
So these are the kind of things thatI'm looking for as a practitioner
when I'm working with people.
(16:32):
And fortunately, I do have solutionswhether it's herbal, meditation, and
just being able to talk things throughand kind of identify where are the
things that are, where you're feelingblocked and how can we release those
blocks to open up the qi or the energy.
So.
there's some things for youto think about today and, I do
(16:53):
have more to say on all of this.
And so join me, next week, sametime, same place, this is in your
element with Kathleen Keneally.
Thanks for joining me today.
