Nel luglio del 1853 quattro navi statunitensi calarono le ancore nella baia di Tokyo. La loro sola presenza costituiva una minaccia all’isolamento in cui il Giappone si era chiuso da duecentocinquant’anni. Il periodo successivo, conosciuto come Bakumatsu, vide la crisi e quindi il crollo dello shogunato che aveva retto il paese dagli inizi del Seicento. Ne seguì una sanguinosa guerra civile, terminata con la vittoria della fazione imperiale, la dissoluzione della casta dei samurai e l’avvio della definitiva occidentalizzazione del paese. Quegli ultimi anni dello shogunato, sospesi tra abissi di passato e ineluttabilità del futuro, ebbero due testimoni d’eccezione, entrambi italiani, Felice Beato e Enrico Hillyer Giglioli. È la figura di quest’ultimo e il suo sguardo sul Giappone, riportato nel volume Viaggio intorno al globo della pirocorvetta italiana Magenta, che questa puntata del podcast ci racconta.
