BASKETBALL - History - Rules and Popularity of the Game - Episode 65
The Sports Guyz take a look at one of the great sports in the world and the only sport that is 100% American in its origin - the game of Basketball! Basketball was invented in 1991 by Canadian-American gym teacher James Naismith at the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith aimed to create a less injury-prone indoor sport for the winter months, as football and other outdoor games were popular during the warmer months. The game was initially called "basket ball" and quickly gained popularity, spreading through YMCA networks and into colleges.
Professional leagues also sprung up in the late 1800's and early 1900's, but the game caught fire when it was included in the 1936 Olympics and even more after the end of World War 2. We take a look at the rules of the game as they were changed over time, and the popularity of the game as it grew in the USA and globally. We also look at the great players through each era of college and NBA basketball, and we show some great clips of great plays in NBA from the past.
