(00:00):
Oh, yes.
(00:01):
The violin.
The witch laughing.
It's that time again, Courtney.
The Witch Movie Project.
Here we are.
For a bonus episode.
are.
It's a bonus episode, though, becauseWe just had our amazing episode with the
anime classics, Kiki, gotta love Kiki,
Kiki's Delivery Service and Howl's Moving
(00:23):
and now Moving Castle, and
Away.
I
here
for all the people who are into anime, these are the of everyone's favorites.
Like, they're literally stillprinting t shirts with this.
they are, and this is how big it is,this is how big it is, and this is why
we're having this bonus episode, isbecause I ran into Ryan Bartley, she's
(00:46):
a voice actress, she's an anime queen,she's in, she's, she's been in over a
hundred and seventy anime or video games.
There's a
172, 173.
It's 174.
She's getting jobs rightnow as we speak, I think.
Ryan,
working.
Ryan.
We
(01:06):
I caught up with her
worthy.
in Salt Lake City and this is whywe're having this bonus because the
conversation took a turn when you'llsee this when she brings up Miyazaki.
She brought up Miyazaki and I pounced.
(01:26):
Let's get to, yes, bow down to me as I.
Let's see what me and Ryan talked about.
We're here with Ryan Bartley.
Now, if You don't know who sheis, you have played You know what?
How many roles have you been in?
I
don't even know.
I actually do not know.
(01:48):
It's honestly incredible.
Like, I've seen your list of movies, and it's like every anime made in
the last, what, three, four years?
Thank you.
You're so sweet.
Thank you.
But you're very good at what you do.
You play a lot of these characters.
Did you really enjoy anime?
I, I do.
I love anime.
I, I didn't grow up watching a ton of it.
But I was always a big Pokemon fan.
(02:10):
And, uh, I was, I was a massiveHello Kitty fan growing up.
That's not really anime.
And yeah, now I get to workon both of those properties.
It's a dream come true.
Um, but yeah, I'm just super grateful.
And I was always a bigfan of Miyazaki movies.
Miyazaki, now I, like PrincessMononoke, um, that's Miyazaki, right?
(02:30):
Yeah, yeah.
One of my favorite, well, okay,so I think as a kid my favorite
was Kiki's Delivery Service.
But, I don't know, itmight be spirited away now.
And you're part of it.
Are you part of Kiki's?
Oh, that's a different Kiki.
That's it.
You're in a Kiki's something, butthat's not the same Kiki from.
Oh, you know what?
That's a different thing.
That's a different Kiki's.
Yeah.
Yeah, but you are.
Good, good memory.
Good, yeah.
But, but you gotta alsomention Howl's Moving Castle.
(02:53):
That movie's incredible.
There's a, I've actually, I'm workingon a project right now, The Witch Movie
Project, and we actually break down Howl'sMoving Castle, I got a local witch, and
me and her are doing a podcast on that.
So when you bring it up, I'm like,oh my gosh, I know this stuff.
That's very cool.
No,
that's awesome.
But we were in the same boat.
It was like, we didn't grow up with anime.
It's polarizing.
(03:13):
It's either you hate it or love it.
I'm like, why?
I love it now.
I do too, and I think it got a badrap for so long that people didn't
like it, and it's like, oh, well Idon't like it either, but you never
watched it.
Well there's also like, you know, when I was a kid it was harder
to find, now it's everywhere.
You know, we have so many differentways to watch anime and you can
find, even Disney Plus, likeHulu, Netflix, every platform has.
(03:35):
Crunchyroll.
Crunchyroll.
Crunchyroll, of course.
You know, but back then, like,it was either Sailor Moon,
or Pokemon, or that's it.
Or you had to find a VHS tape that wasa bootleg version of a bootleg version.
That's
what I heard.
Yeah, that was like, maybe even before my time.
But like, that's what I've, I've heardabout the one episode per, per episode.
VHS tape era.
Yeah.
(03:55):
Now, how did you get into this?
Like, is this something you dreamed of?
Did you want to be a kid?
You know what?
I actually have been interestedin voiceover since I was a kid.
Um, I actually started as a, as a tween.
I was working for Radio Disney.
Um, cause they use realkids to do their voiceover.
Their, their promos and theircommercial spots, you know, so
that's kind of how I started.
Um, but I always really wantedto do cartoons and I was, I
(04:18):
loved cartoons growing up.
I was into Rugrats and Rocko's ModernLife, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, like,
That kind of classic Nickelodeon stuff.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I loved those things.
So I, I just always dreamed of like doingcartoons and I studied really hard and
started taking classes on how to, how to,how to do cartoon voiceover, um, which
(04:40):
is very different from other kinds, butyeah, that's kind of how it started.
I
wanted to touch that because a lotof people think Oh, I could do that.
I could be a voice actor, butthere's a lot that goes into
it.
Yeah, there is.
I mean, I started doing, um, stage work.
So, I was doing musicaltheater and plays all as a kid.
And then, um, and dance classesand all that kind of thing.
And so, you know, I mean, voice actors are actors.
(05:02):
Like, that really has tocome first and foremost.
So, I always tell people, like, if youcan do plays at school, Or any kind of,
um, theater at all is great trainingto get your feet wet in that world.
And it is, it's just, it's acting.
So take an acting class, take an improv class.
Like, that's a great wayto get into voiceover.
Now let me ask you somethingserious because acting does take
a toll on the actor themselves.
(05:24):
How do you deal with anything likethat that might have got you down?
Maybe there's a messageI hope that you can have.
For somebody else out therelistening, what would it be?
You know, it's um, actingis a lot of rejection.
I tell everybody, uh, thatcomes up to me and says, Oh my
gosh, you have so many roles.
And I say, you know, you'relooking at the tip of the iceberg.
This is, all this is this.
(05:46):
And this is what I auditionedfor that I don't book.
You know what I mean?
So, It is a lot of rejection.
It is mentally pretty hard sometimes.
But the thing is, I think whatkeeps me going is, you know,
Every job is hard nowadays.
It's hard to get any sort of job.
So you might as well picksomething that you love.
(06:07):
You only live once.
You know, life is very precious.
We only have one life.
Such a tiny amount of time on this earth.
So I I always tell people chase yourdreams You're never too old to start.
First of all, I get people fromall ages asking me am I you
know Could I be a voice actor?
Do you think how do Ibreak in like am I too old?
Am I too young and I always tellpeople no, you're never too old too
(06:30):
young I like I said, I started when Iwas a little kid I have a friend who
was in the military and his, he's nowa massively successful voice actor.
He does cons all the time.
He directed me on a video game recently,um, and he was in the military.
This is his second career.
So he's, he books all those Call ofDuty, all those kind of, all those kind
(06:50):
of video games because he has the realexperience and he really does sound like
he's in that world, you know, when hegets those auditions, he kills it, you
know, but, but this is his second career.
So I always tell people you're never tooold, you're never too young, you know.
If you have any sort of interest inthis, passion you want to explore, like,
I love what I do, and I want everyoneto be as happy as I am, you know?
(07:11):
But yes, it is a lot of rejection, but I don't know, you just, you, if
it's worth it to you, you tune thatout and you pick yourself back up.
It's hard though.
It's definitely hard.
You lean on your friends.
I do a lot of meditation.
Um, I'm a Peloton girl.
So, you know, working out can help.
Meditating can help.
One of my coaches, uh, Tony Oliver.
(07:33):
He's, uh, people might knowhim as Lupon the Third.
He was also one of my voiceoverteachers and directs me.
He directed the Hunter Hunter dub.
He directs a bunch of stuff.
He tells people, you know, if you'rereligious, prayer can help, you know.
There's so many different thingsthat people can turn to to
help them in those dark times.
But you know, you find what worksfor you and you just keep, you just
(07:56):
keep fighting and you never give up.
You
know, r realize there's tomorrow,there's always a tomorrow.
There is, there is.
The sun is always gonna come back out.
The world's gonna keep spinning, youknow, and it's a hard time to do anything.
It's a hard world to live inright now, and it's stressful and
there's just so much going on.
But, um, you know, the, the conventionworld is, is a safe spot, is a safe place.
(08:17):
We're all family here.
You,
you know, I wanna get into thatbecause a lot of people here.
These are the outcasts.
These are the nerds, whichused to be a derogatory term.
Not anymore.
I'll say I'm a nerd.
I'll fight anybody that wants to
go against me.
Nerds are cool.
They are.
No, but we're such a family here.
Like, we don't laugh at anyone.
This is an inclusive community.
We're here to have fun.
(08:37):
We're all got our, our strangeness, youknow, but, but it's nothing but love here.
And I want people to come toa place where they feel like
this is, uh, where you belong.
Yeah, it's a safe place where you can feellike everyone is just as, as odd as you.
And that's a good thing.
It's
almost like there's a competitionto see who can be the oddest.
You know, it happens.
It happens.
(08:58):
But we're all littleweirdos in our own ways.
And you know, you just embrace that.
And, um, I just love, I loveto see everyone bring that.
Bring them, their uniqueselves to, to the table.
Have you ever seen the movie The Craft?
Oh yeah!
Do you?
Yes!
Do you remember when they get off abus and the guy tells them, look out
for these weirdos, and she looks at himand says, we are the weirdos, mister.
(09:20):
Yeah!
What?
That's very relevant right here, right?
We are the weirdos.
And we're proud of it.
That's true.
Let me ask y'all, let meget out on a happy note.
What do you have coming out now?
You got a video game,you got a, what's big?
What are you looking forward to?
What can I talk about?
What can I talk about?
That's the
first question.
What can you actually talkabout without getting in
trouble?
I know, I have to shuffle throughmy brain, like what is out?
(09:41):
What's been announced?
I know I have to be careful.
I will say, I um, I play the, a lotof people don't know this, I play the
uh, little, the little Ghostbusters.
Oh,
and the Frozen Empire?
Frozen
empire.
They're these little guys.
You remember the littlemin, the little mini puffs?
Little they're called?
They're called Mini Puffs.
Minis.
That's their official name.
(10:01):
Yeah.
That was you.
Yeah.
I, well, there's, it's not just me.
There's a bunch of us that did it.
For this movie a group of us did it,but I'm one of them and that this
is now streaming I think on Netflix.
Yeah, and it's also on blu ray as ofpretty recently So I'll give a shout
out to Ghostbusters Frozen Empire.
I love
that We actually talked toErnie Hudson and he said he had
so much fun making that movie.
(10:22):
He hopes there's another one
That's great to hear.
Would you be
a part of another one?
Oh my gosh, yes, in a heartbeat.
It was so fun.
No, I love the little mini puffs.
They're so cute.
No, it was, we had ablast working on that.
Call her for the next one.
And I want my agent fee.
Thank you so much.
No,
thank you guys.
Thank you
Ryan, I mean, really, thank you so muchfor having that conversation with me.
(10:45):
I went in there not really expecting that.
Really, I was with Promise to Live.
Promise to Live.
org is your suicide prevention, suicide awareness organization.
I went into FanX being a part ofthat, being a part of Ride the Wave.
And we were looking for messages of hope.
That's why she gave usa message of hope there.
(11:05):
But the Miyazaki conversationleading into the anime convo and all
that, I mean, that was incredible.
Like, she's, she,
kismet.
All at the right place at the right timeand the right conversation was happening.
it really was.
And she, she's incredible.
She really is an anime queen.
Like, I wasn't kidding about herbeing on 170 plus different voice,
(11:28):
uh, actor, actor roles in KikiVerse, Hello Kitty, Demon Slayer.
She even talked aboutthat in the interview.
She's like, I, I, have been apart of my childhood fantasies.
Like this is,
What a career.
I mean, man, I, I would love to be doingvoiceover work or something like that.
(11:49):
I always thought when I was a kid,I was going to grow up and be an
actress and I was going to do this.
thought it'd be on SNL.
Honestly, I wanted to be the nextKristen Wiig before Kristen Wiig.
Right?
it's not too late, Courtney.
You still got, you
maybe that's in my future, but, uh,
still got a chance.
Listen,
she's had.
it is, and I don't think I did iton air, but I actually, off air,
(12:11):
I did invite Ryan to the event.
October 26th, Novel Daybreak byCreighton Communities presents the Witch
Movie Project live podcast taping andmovie screening and costume contest.
wouldn't that be amazing?
Oh, man, I invited her.
I said, Hey, come on out.
(12:31):
So, I mean, she probably,
amazing if she came.
And talk about a message for Hope.
I mean, when we talk aboutthese two movies that we did,
yeah,
movies, two movies, three movies, and,and a lot of those movies that she did
voices for, a lot of hopeful messageswhen you talk about messages of hope.
And I hope people get like that.
from watching those movies is that
(12:54):
yeah,
loved feeling
absolutely.
And if anybody out there, ifyou're going through something
out there, go to promise to live.
org, that's promise, the number two live.
org.
You can make the promise today.
It only takes a couple of seconds.
Uh, Really, if you're going throughsomething out there, remember you're
not alone and just ask for some help.
