just finish your lifting program Shoulder day for you today,
so so our how are things?
Speaker 3 (11:00):
How are you doing? R J?
Speaker 4 (11:02):
I'm doing awesome, man, you.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
I'm doing great and even better now that we have
you here with us because you are coming coming from
your coming out. You're probably your best game, you know,
in the NFL, And I want to ask you, how
does it feel to have that first interception in your career.
Probably at the moment, you don't you're not even thinking
(11:26):
about it, you know, because you just want to win
the game, you want to make a play. But after
when you are in the sideline and you kind of
reflect in the moment, how.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Did it feel?
Speaker 4 (11:36):
I mean, I completely like blacked out after I got it.
I was like, there's no way, like you know, So
it was definitely one of the best moments of my life.
It's something I'll remember forever, you know. My first interception
in the NFL, it was it was crazy, like I
feel so much, you know, just looking back at all
that I went through to get here. It was such
(11:57):
a full circle moment to finally be can plays and
and you know, just playing alongside great players. You know,
it's just awesome.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Now, if I'm not mistaken, your ten you have tend
to go to catch catching up to Pops who has eleven,
you know, in his twenty year career in the in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
So there is some work to do. But listen, I mean,
here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I mean, to get to the NFL, it's incredibly hard
to stay in the NFL as a sixth rounder. I
can't even imagine, you know, how the odds are pile
up against you. And then you get your first interception
in one of you know, most meaningful games of the season,
when you really got your snubs, you know, in this
(12:43):
game against the Vikings. So going back to the full
circle moment, I mean, have you had time to reflect
in the journey that led.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
You to be where you are today?
Speaker 4 (12:55):
Yes, yes, and just so many people just all I
can think about was everyone that's helped me along the way,
and really afterwards, after the game is over, you know,
the next day, you know, we woke up and it
was Friday, and it was you know, we got you know,
we got the Titans. So it's really just all about
good or bad success, you know, good you know, success
(13:16):
or failure, just flushing it and moving on because you know,
I also had a really bad play, my first ever play,
you know in the NFL. You know, so it was
just being able to move on from that and focus
on the next thing, which I think will help me
moving forward, just going on without the rest of the season.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
R JA.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Talking about the people that has been important in your life.
Getting ready for this interview with you, I went back
to the day you got the phone call from Joe
Ortiz and the Chargers brass you know, and all those
people that we're there with you. I assume that every
single one of them, you know, was there for a reason.
You know, how are they doing, How are they enjoying
(13:59):
the journey that you have embarked on with the Los
Angeles Chargers.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Yes, it's it's just super special to just see the
joy that I'm able to bring to other people, like
my family members, you know, like like my dad, you know,
he's living vicariously through me, and so are all my
cousins and my siblings, you know. So I feel like
it's just it's just such an incredible opportunity to be
such an inspiration to the people you care about, and
(14:26):
to be carrying the torch now, you know, from my dad,
just him him being able to you know, look out
there and see his last name and be proud. You know,
it's something that I dream of doing as a father
as well. So I just know that he's happy, and
he's told me how proud he is to me, and
that just means the world to me. And seeing my mom,
you know after the game, you know how happy she was.
It was just so special.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Or Jay, when did you believe that you could actually
make it to the NFL Because there are so many
cases of dad's you know, fathers have played in the
league the and the kids just couldn't make it, which
is real, the vast majority of it. So when did
you realize, you know what, I actually really have a
(15:09):
shot of fulfilling this dream.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Yeah, it was crazy because it was just like it's
always been getting over the next hurdle, you know, whatever
hurdle that is achieving the next goal. So just starting off,
you know, in middle school, I was like, you know,
next year, I got to make varsity. My freshman year,
I finally made varsity. And then you know, after I
got on varsity, I was like, I got to get
an offer. I finally got an offer, and then you know,
going to my dream school. You know, I went to
(15:32):
Clemson and I was like, finally got to Clemson. At
Clemson was I was on scout team and I was like,
I got to start at Clemson. Then I started at Clemson,
and then I started making plays. And then by my
junior year at Clemson, I was like making enough plays
to where I was like, you know this, you know,
this is my opportunity to make it to like the
next level, and it became very realistic. Then I'd say
(15:54):
my junior year of college and I was like, you know,
this is the next step, and you know, just still
always having a goal to change, Like now my next
step is being you know, a pro bowler and and
you know, just win a super Bowl. So there's just
so there's just always some more there. But I'd say
I it finally became real my junior year of college.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
It never ends, I understand that.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
And the life of a professional competitive athlete it's full
of challenges. I mean, it never ends. Literally, it's day
after day. And I'm sure coach Harbor is one of
the things that he preaches. You know, you can never
you know, follow in your you know, oh you play
so well, you had your first interception, blah blah. Now
we're onto the Titans this week, you know, and we'll
(16:36):
talk about the Titans in a little In a little bit.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
I wanted to ask you about your your pups, your dad.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
What would you say is maybe one of one or
two of the best advices that he gave you from
somebody who played two decades in the league, you know,
how to get ready for this, you know, for this
just so incredibly competitive and difficult to stay in the league.
So what what would you say were two of those
(17:02):
most important, you know, pieces of advice.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
He gave you.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Yeah, I'd say the first one is just having competitive stamina.
And it's really something that you know, I heard a
lot in college and my dad always you know ingram
me with that competitive stamina, and you know, all that
really means is just uh, you know, the thrill is
in is not in winning or making a play, It's
in can you do it again? And can you do
(17:26):
it consistently? You know, having the stamina. It's not about winning,
it's just can you win again? You know, it's can
you do it continually and continually and do it again?
So that's something that he really ingrained in me. And
then like the next thing that I've really taken, you know,
and I'll die with this is just next play mentality.
And that's just something that I tell myself in life.
(17:47):
You know, good things happen, bad things happen in life,
not even on the football field, but off the football
field as well. Next play mentality. So I just try
to always, you know, live by that next play mentality,
the windshield mentality. You know, it's you know greatness and
like the best is always yet to come. You know,
there's always something better out there for you in life,
and just keep on, you know, chasing bigger things.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Oh Jay, Uh, why do you think you play so well?
That's a team entire, the entire three, you know, face
up of the team plays so well against the Vikings.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
I just feel like it's a testament to the people
in the locker room and the coaches, you know, just
just everyone, and then the front office just everyone, you know,
the front office picking the right people, and then the
guys in the locker room buying into the coaches, and
the coaches putting in full you know hours, you know,
they're up here all day and all night putting in
hours preparing, and then guys in the locker room having
(18:43):
to go out there and execute and buy in, and
you know, take time away from their families. And even
when they're home, you know, they're not really home. They're
they're grinding study and still so like you know, even
though myself, you know, I get home, I'm watching films.
So it's just like it's it's so many, so many
sacrifices that go into just the sixty minutes of the game.
You know, on the field, there's just so many sacrifices.
(19:05):
So I'm just thankful that everyone that's on the field,
no matter what their role is.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
Is just bout in.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
What about the veteran leadership you have in this team
in your room, for example, having somebody like Derwin James Junior,
you know, to be able to learn to pick his brain,
you know, to have somebody like Tony Jefferson, who's obviously
a veteran in this league, Khalil Mack that came back
and made such a huge impact on the defensive side side.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
Of the ball.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
How has it been And do you have to pinch
yourself sometimes, you know, when you're there and you're sharing
longer room and you see these guys future Hall of Famers,
you know, walking by you.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's wild just you know, growing
up watching Khalil Mack, you know, you know, watching Derwin James,
knowing him all the way since high school, college, you know,
and now I'm here, you know, being able to share
the field with him and learn from him and sit
beside him a meeting. You know, it's just awesome because
those guys are just super unselfish, like they're you know,
they're they're really open, you know, really willing to help
(20:04):
and I can go to them for anything, and they've
they've just poured so much ento me, especially Derwin, especially Tony.
You know, those guys have just poured so much ento
me and not being selfish. There's no hostility, there's no
you know, it's it's competitive, but everyone is trying to
help each other win. You know, everyone wants to win
and everyone wants to help each other be better. So
I think that's really special. R.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Jay talking about the Titans now, and I obviously I
never play in the NFL, and this is something that
I'm sure you will never think of, otherwise you wouldn't
be in the league.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
But on paper, you know, the weapons.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
That the Titans have are not as powerful as the
weapons that the Vikings had, especially on this you know,
if you talk about the secondary and the kind of
players that you had to defend, talking about you know,
Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. Obviously that's not the way
you guys are approaching neither thinking about the titles, because
(21:00):
even though they are one and seven, He's an NFL
team full of professionals, and it is so keep you know,
keep winning.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
So how are you approaching this game in Tennessee?
Speaker 4 (21:12):
Uh? You know, for me, I just you know, take
it as a nameless, faceless opponent. You know, I'm really
just covering a receiver. I don't really I try not
to think about who it is or you know, obviously
everyone has tendencies, good good and bad tendencies. So really
just really just trying to take the you know, the
person out of it. And really, you know, everyone's talented.
(21:34):
You know, all the receivers are fast, all all the
receivers can cut, they can all run routes. But you know,
for me as a safety, it's it's really conceptual and cerebral.
So you know, athletically, I fly, I can match up
with anybody, and really just understanding what they do as
an offense, you know, in their scheme is really what's
what's like, really what it's gonna come down to. And
(21:56):
they have great playmakers. I mean, they're they're they're they've
been in some really close games and they've had some
really good games and the players have made like some
spectacular plays, and they have you know, really good quarterback,
running backs, really good you know, they got you know,
they got really good receivers that are fast and can
take the top off. So they have a really good team.
And we just got to you know, just play together
(22:17):
and you know, treat it like you know, it's just
the next game for us. So we just got to
take that mentality into it.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
I love two concepts that you have dropped, you know,
for me here, one is the competitive stamina and the
Faceless Opponent.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
I love I love those two.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
This week, this extra sort of many many bye week.
I assume you did the Wonders. Yeah, for the body,
for the mind.
Speaker 4 (22:39):
Oh yeah, definitely, definitely. It was nice to be able
to spend the time with like my family was here
and uh, you know, my girl was here. Was able
to spend time with them and and just settle down
and get off my feet for a little bit. But
you know, it's back to work.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
How seldom California treated you, by the way, rj.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
Oh, It's beautiful. It's beautiful. You know it's I lived
in Texas and I lived in So Carolina, and you know,
the weather out here is unbeatable. It's pretty. It's sunny
every day. You know, it's you know, perfect weather. And
the people are nice. You know it's it's it's beautiful,
palm trees, the oceans right there. I stay right next
to the ocean, so you know, it's beautiful. I love
(23:16):
coming to work every day.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Excellent, excellent answer.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Before I let you go, this is something that I
always I am curious about, you know, to us about
to a player of your caliber.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
You come from Clemson.
Speaker 2 (23:28):
Few programs in in you know, college football are going
to get you more ready for the NFL than Clemson.
What has been the biggest difference for you from the
university level to the pro level really.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
Just it's in college. It was a job for me,
especially my fifth year because I did five years of college.
So my fifth year, you know, I was making money.
I didn't really have too many classes, and it's kind
of translated, well, it's made the transition a little bit easier,
you know, just having prior knowledge of finances and and
you know, my dad playing in the NFL also helped.
(24:04):
And then really just the schedule, knowing that it's I
don't have any classes, it's it's full time football. It's
it's it's a you know, and it's good because this
is a really structured program. You know, we kind of
run it really really well, and you know, it's like
it's it's very structured and it's it's similar to Clemson
in some ways. So it's it's it's been awesome for
me just to be a part of this, and I
(24:26):
feel like I've you know, transitioned very well into it.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
Did you did you play against Tennessee while you were
in Clemson?
Speaker 4 (24:32):
R J played against Michigan or Tennessee, Tennessee.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
Like h yes, yes, yes, I did play yeah one time,
twenty three something.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
Yeah, like yeah, okay Orange Bowl okay, okay, coming back
to Tennessee now to play, to play the Titans.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
That's what. That was an excellent answer you gave me.
I love it. And you know what's great, r J.
The structure that you have around you. It sounds pretty solid, man.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
It sounds pretty like you you have a really nice
tight circle they are, and having your pups obviously playing
in the NFL, that that helps a lot. Before I
