Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following He's a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
This He's Cowboys Storyline with Nick Eatman.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
What's up everyone, Welcome to Cowboys Storyline. I am Nick Eatman,
and let's talk some Cowboys football here in the off season.
But it's never the off season. There's always news, there's
always stuff happening here, especially this week. And we knew
something would materialize with the head coaching position, and it did,
Mike McCarthy moving on as head coach. And it sounds
(00:45):
like it was as close to a mutual decision as
it ever can be. And you know, you always hear
that it was mutual.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Is it ever? Is it ever really mutual?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
And in this case, it did seem like this These
were this is what the Jerry stance was.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
This is kind of what Mike wanted.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
And the end of the day, they just they didn't
see eye to eye on it. And I'm sure money
is a huge factor in it, like it isn't everything
in life. So Mike McCarthy out as head coach and
now we'll we'll talk about it.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Who's next.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
That's that's what everyone wants to know. And not only that,
but who are they bringing with them and who's staying
and all that good stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
So we'll talk.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
About it here on Cowboys storyline eight eight eight eight
five five two two ninety sevens the number to call.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
It's the off season.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
We only do the one show a week, really, so
let's uh, let's get to it. Let's don't waste any
more time. Let's get to the phone line. Anthony and
Miami calls a lot.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
Anthony, You're first, make the quick just like Nest Monday.
What's up, my guy?
Speaker 4 (01:46):
How are you?
Speaker 5 (01:47):
I'm pretty good. I'm gonna I'm gonna make my statement
and get up out of there.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Man.
Speaker 5 (01:52):
Last last time, it was about what we needed to
do in that field at red zone, with that money zone.
I'm trying to fix the Cowboys so somebody else can
fix the coach. I got two players I need back
on the Cowboys, and they prove their worth. They won't
cost that much. I don't think I need brought Cofflan
back on the Cowboys and Rico' dad back on the Cowboys.
Rico Donalds will passed everything you asked of him. He
(02:12):
stayed healthy, he ran behind the line, and a lot
of people say nobody could really run up and run behind.
It was negligent. He did what he had to do.
He wasn't the greatest added, but he tried and I
think he can get better with work. The same with
Brock Kaufman played a couple of positions for you when
other guys went down, didn't cry about it. Got to
bring the nastiness to him. I need those guys back
(02:34):
on the team, sign them as free agents, and then
add whatever yolks you at, and that's all.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
I got to hit Anthony.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Hold up, I'm going to ask you a question here.
I know they say quick, but I'm gonna ask you
Hoffmann and Rico. I would think Hoffman's going to play
guard in your mind because maybe he's the center, and
Rico obviously the running back. So if the best pick
on the board at number twelve is at Ashton Genty
at running back, or it's a guard, it's a guard
(03:01):
that that we can come right in and play right guard,
is Hoffmann and Rico good enough for you to say
now I don't need that position.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
No, not not at running back and guard and guard.
I'll replace them. I'll get the best guard and let
him compete, but Rico just needs to make he needs
to stay on the team. Genty, you don't pass them
up because you need that. You don't have any running backs.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Number one.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
That's number one, you don't have any Number two. He
earned the right to be there and compete. Just sign
up for four five million dollars. Then let genty or
somebody like that come in. No, you don't pass up
that guy.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
All right, good enough? Good? I mean that's that. Thank you.
I mean that that's one of those things.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
And that's the decisions these guys are you know, the
front offices have to make. Is you know it's yes,
this guy is good. Do we want him back? But
are we Are we saying we're good? I mean, if
it's a top wide receiver, you know you do need
two receivers, so I could see that happening.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
But you know, you you.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Feel good about the position you need some help at
for CD. But I'm just saying there are certain positions
where you look at and you're like, all right, yeah,
this is great to have them back. But if we
have a chance to take a difference maker over him
in the draft, would we do it? So that's kind
of the questions I think that always need to be asked.
All right, let's keep it going. I'm a from a Napa, California.
I'm a what's up?
Speaker 6 (04:19):
Hey? What's up? Nick? Well, I'm confused, but I'm probably
no different than a lot of other Cowboys fans. Yeah, yeah,
it's what are we doing? Man? What are we doing?
We didn't know what? We didn't know if we wanted
Mike McCarthy a week ago, two weeks ago. More than that,
(04:42):
I just hoped that Cowboys just draft the best player available.
I think all positions are open, no matter what. I know.
I'm trying to put the cart before the horse or whatnot.
Were talking about the draft before we even have a coach.
But I just think that they've always did best. When
when Will McClay has free reign to just pick the
(05:03):
best player, it seems like that's what's always worked out best.
You know, I think it's free. We see we start
with you know, our own players, but you know we
we have to go with the best player. All all
positions are open except for kicker, even quarterback with Dak
you know what I mean? Like, I just think all
positions are open. Hopefully we we do. Maybe what Troy
(05:27):
was saying, and just go with you know, get somebody
like Dan Campbell, just like you know, he's a proto shape.
Bill Parcels. Let that person come in and do what
they do, you know, let them Dan Campbell, Bill Furselves,
whoever it is. Man. But my question, my question is this,
what are we doing? Nick? You're in the building, you
(05:48):
know well, I mean.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Thanks for everything, Thank you appreciate it. I don't know
exactly what's what's going on. I mean, and that's that's
the thing. There's a lot of people in this building
that kind of shake their heads and they don't No.
Let me let me say this to out of all
due respect to Dan Campbell, but but Dan Campbell and
Bill Parcells don't deserve to be in the same sentence
(06:11):
at all.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
I mean, I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
As far as coaches and stuff like that, I mean,
you kind of are you talking.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
About grit or you know, yelling or or.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
What toughness because you say, you know, like a Parcels
and a Campbell. I mean, Dan Campbell's closer to Jason
Whitton than than you know, than any of them are
to Parcels. And I say that just when Parcels got
here he had had, you know, two Super Bowls and
so much more, skins on the wall, and and and
Dan Campbell. You know, he's one of those guys that
(06:41):
you know, he's a younger coach, but but you know,
he hasn't been a coordinator for very long. He's a
walk around coach. He's got great assistance, great coordinators, and
those coordinators are are gonna be up for jobs as well.
Both of them kind of linked uh to to this
job as well. So all right, let's go to Irene,
False Church, Virginia, Irene.
Speaker 7 (07:03):
Hey, good afternoon, so crazy time, but uh, I guess
I just want to give my of course I want
Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn, those are my ones. I
feel like we'll end up with Kellen Moore or maybe
Jason Witten just because of the money. My hope is
that with people like uh Aikman and Cassie us chiming
(07:23):
in and taking shots about, you know, not a coveted job,
that maybe Jerry's ego will kick in and he'll do
something a little bit more than what I think he
will do.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Are you talking about.
Speaker 8 (07:37):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (07:37):
I am, yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
He just he just did a little tweet again again. No, offense.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
But that's almost like part of Sales and Campbell as
coaches Tony at Aikman. Little a little different there. That's fine,
even Troy Troy Trey can say what he wants about. Yeah,
it's not as coveted. Yeah, and a lot of it
is money. I mean, it comes down to money. But
go ahead, Irene, go ahead.
Speaker 9 (07:59):
Yep.
Speaker 7 (08:00):
No, that's so. You know those are my wants. You know,
there's there's a positive with Winton in the building. I
just I hope he's not jumping to head coach, all.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
Right, all right, appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
And I don't I don't foresee that happening. I don't
I tell Jason Whitten being the head coach of the Cowboys,
the next head coach of the Cowboy I definitelyn't see
that happening. Do I see him a coach on the staff?
I could see that. I think a lot of people
think that they could see that as well. All Right,
real quick here, we're going to take a break here
on Cowboys storyline. We've got a lot of show left,

The Cowboys Storyline.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Back here on Cowboys Storyline, I'm Nick Eatman. We've got
more calls to take. I want to hear from you guys.
Been some big news this week, going to be even
bigger news, I would imagine here in the next few days,
maybe weeks, We'll see how this coaching staff gets put together.
Let's start with this segment with Rob in Vegas. Rob,
what's up?
Speaker 4 (10:37):
Man?
Speaker 13 (10:39):
I got to give Jerry credit for, you know, making
a change. I know he don't like to make change.
And I got to give Mike credit for betting on himself.
Speaker 11 (10:50):
Yeah, I'm sure.
Speaker 13 (10:51):
I'm sure that deal that was offered was you know,
lowbold and money, lowbold and time years right, and and
he didn't take it. And I'm I'm excited. I just
want him to do a good thorough search. I don't
I knowing Jerry. He's got guys lined up. I have
a feeling like a John Gruden uh and and that's fine.
(11:14):
I don't I I don't see if uh uh no
experience head coach coming in here. It's tough to learn
on the job with this team, and and the team
I think is too good for that. You know, Ben Johnson,
I do like Aaron Glenn. He I could see maybe
him for the cowboy ties, but I I could definitely
(11:35):
see it John Gruden, I think you know Jerry, I'm
sure he has had some so and Dion. You know,
Deon's a long shot. He does bring the cachet and
Deon's old school, but his son's not going to be
in and he would have to know that because they're
not waiting till the draft. Yeah, but it's exciting now.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Yeah, yeah, it is. It is, Rob, Thanks for the call.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
As always, we will have shows every Wednesday. We'll have
a show every Wednesday morning, so and make sure everybody,
all the regulars uh to call if we got about
an hour and a half show every Wednesday morning, and
Rob will be able to call then as well. A
little bit more long winded than that, but that's okay.
I appreciate that. And I knew you'd be excited because
I mean, you know, you've been critical of of Mike
(12:23):
and you know there's there's things to be critical of
for sure, and you're right, that's a good way to
say it. He bet on himself, I mean, because you know,
I mean, he had to have a good idea that
that so he can maybe get one of these jobs
because he gets squeezed out this year. I don't know
if you'll I don't know if you'll get another job,
you know, I mean after this, but we'll see what
(12:45):
happens with Mike. But yeah, as far as other coaches,
like in the Dion stuff, like the stuff you're hearing. Okay,
you gotta remember everything has an agenda. Everybody has one,
and every time anyone says anything, there's something behind it.
So if you're if you're watching those TV shows, the
ones that are there every day on ESPN.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Steven A.
Speaker 3 (13:07):
Smith and all them, and you're hearing them tell you
why Dion's a good idea, just remember that they will
benefit from that. I mean, that would be the greatest
thing to ever happen to those talkshops because right now
they have to talk about the Cowboys and Mike McCarthy
all the time, and they probably don't want to. It's
probably boring to them, but they talk about the Cowboys
(13:29):
everything that happens. Mike doesn't ever really give them anything
to say. But imagine what Dion would say. They that
would be a dream come true for all of these
talk shows and things like that. So they're going to
tell you it's a good idea when it isn't. In
my opinion, it's not. You want someone with experience, I mean,
you're gonna have to pay a lot of money.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
They didn't want to.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Jerry didn't pay a lot of money for a head
coach who's won a Super Bowl and is a play caller.
He called the play, So what's dion going to cost
a lot more than that? And you don't have a
coordinator either side of the ball, You don't have any
experience there. So yes, he played defense. Is he a
defensive guy? You got to get it. You got to
(14:13):
get some top notch coordinators in there. So it would
be a very very very expensive walk around coach. In
my opinion, I think it would be fun for people
that love the circus. But I don't know if it's
the right idea. All right, Uh, let's keep it going here.
We got another call on the line. Let's see here,
we got Davian in Illinois.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
I know.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
How are you? I know how you are. I know
you're excited, so I can I don't even have to ask.
Speaker 6 (14:44):
You.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Well, I mean this is like you're just like your
sixth call ever and they've all been McCarthy needs to
go or whatever.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
So anyways, so what do you think? What's what's the
next move here?
Speaker 5 (14:58):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Priment team. I think it's gonna be then more. I
would love Ben Johnson. Maybe they bring Flues back as
a d C or solidh the d C.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
Uh if I had the button. That's what I would hit.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Yeah, I agree, Mike and say Zimmer too, say it again,
but I mean Mike and Mike and say Zimmer if
you bring more into uh, Zim around for another year,
if he wants to, he wants to come back and coach,
Uh yeah, that would be nice and dark or I mean,
I think they're gonna probably have Jason on the Jason
(15:36):
Widding on the staff. I don't think it'll be the
head coach. I think he can probably be tight ends
coach or something that'd be cool. But uh yeah, yeah,
pretty much it because I never got to be quick
to do.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Well, I appreciate David, Yes, thank thank you for being
in and out here. But you know, and you he's
been one that's been vocal about about wanting to to
uh see something different, kind of stale play calling, offense
all that, and so you know, I I think that
the you know, you need you need to get a
good defensive coordinator for you're not gonna bring Zimmer back,
(16:07):
but you know the commitment that they made into Dak
and c d uh, you better get an offense in
here that can that can maximize what you're paying. You
know what you're paying for for them. And so whether
that's out of your head coach, or make sure you're
getting the top notch offensive coordinator, but one way or another,
you know, I I definitely think that you have to
cater to that side of the ball for sure. Now
(16:30):
you're gonna you can make the same argument because you're
gonna pay, you know, at some point I would think
they're gonna they're gonna pay with Micah. And and that's
another thing. This coordinator has got to have a mindset
for Micah. They've got to figure out how to to
you know, get him involved and and to the point
where he is the playmaker every single game. He can
(16:54):
wreck games all the time because we know he can
rutch the passer, but you've got to figure out ways
to kind of you know, one up offense. And so
they don't know exactly where he's coming from. I thought
they Zimmer and them did a nice job as as
it kind of went on later on in the in
the season there. But you know, the lines are open
here on Cowboys storyline here eight A eight eight five
(17:14):
five two two nine seven is the number to call.
We're going to take a We're going to take a
break here real quick on storyline and we'll be right
back after this with some.

There is no eye in Dallas. There is no eye
in heart, either eye in blue star or a lone
star for that matter, and there's no eye in how
about them Cowboys smear enough?
Speaker 1 (18:06):
Nos, There's no eye in football.
Speaker 10 (18:08):

Speaker 1 (18:29):
It's the Cowboys story Hine.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
All right back here on Cowboys storyline. The lines are open.
We got a full show here, or at least we're
hoping to have a full show. Need to need to
get some feedback from you guys. Want to hear what
you think eight eight eight eight five five two two
ninety seven. Even if you've already called today callback, we'll
hear from you again. Uh for sure, had Pete in
(18:56):
Connecticut called three times in one show. That's a you
know called three Pete. Uh called it one show. So
if you can call back, H nothing against that, but yeah,
I think, you know, let's let's continue to talk about
obviously the coaching search, coach coaching news and things like that.
I think that you know, yesterday we did a emergency podcast,
(19:21):
I think is what we called it. Mussel, Patrick Walker,
Tommy Aarsh, Kyle Yellmans. We talked about you know who
we thought and could could be in play here. And
I mentioned it several times that that Kellen Moore I
think is a guy that that I think he's a
front runner if I if I had to say, I
(19:41):
think he's the front runner right now. That makes sense
for what Jerry typically likes out of these coaches. Now,
he does want a guy that that that can win,
that has won.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
But if you're gonna go.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
With a with an unproven coach, it's somebody that's in
his mind proven to him. Jason Garrett made sense for
him there.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
And I think.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
Kellen would be another one, another situation there. So you
know you're talking about about guys like like Kellen Moore.
Here's what I think he would bring to the table.
He's got a great relationship with Dak and that he
had success. I mean Dak had a lot of success
through thirty seven touchdown passes with him as the offensive
(20:23):
coordinator just a few seasons ago. So it's not like,
you know, only McCarthy was able to take Dak to
another level. I mean he had he had success in there.
I think the offense kind of it flows better now.
All coordinators are going to have plays, you know, play
caller calls that you that you want to take back.
I mean what sarkt at Texas. I mean he's a
(20:46):
great play caller and he has been all season long.
And then you get down to the end of the
season and you know that there's a couple of plays
there and down by the goal line, and there lost
to Ohio State that a lot of the fans were saying,
why did they do this? That's every game, that's every game,
that's every loss like that happens, so so they they're therefore.
But I still think from an offensive mind, from a
(21:09):
relationship with Dak and with some of the other players
that are that have been here, the success that he's
having at Philly, taking him away from Philly probably from
a you know, a money standpoint I'm sure would work.
And and also in this this has to be reiterated.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
You gotta you gotta.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
Understand this, this everything, This ain't for everyone. Being the
head coach of the Cowboys is not for everyone. There's
a lot of things that happen here, a lot of circumstances.
Speaker 10 (21:40):
You know.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
Jason Garrett had one of the best lines of all time.
We joke about some of the sayings he would say
because they they'd never changed, kind of like his hair
and his and his and his attire every day never changed,
but his mindset. And he also said, you know, all
the time, be your best, regardless of circumstance. Be your best.
And I'll tell you what circumstances happen around here all
(22:02):
the time, so you got to be your best. I
thought Yerett was really good at that, and you know,
not great in other areas, you know some and that's
why it didn't last forever nine years. But still he
was good at that, and you have to kind of
get that. And that's another thing Kellen Moore sort of
would have on his side there. All right, let's go
back to the phone line. We got Rick in Massachusetts.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
Rick, what's up?
Speaker 8 (22:24):
Hey? How you doing that good?
Speaker 4 (22:26):
How are you?
Speaker 8 (22:27):
I'm all right, yeah, I just uh but you know,
trying to get tired of the you know, some people
are like, uh it was it Kyle and uh Patrick
this morning, Tompkins Cowboys that most of the you know,
they would I agree on most of the hype I'm
(22:48):
about Dion is just type of drama on clicks and
stuff like that. Don't really pay no engine to it,
you know. But yeah, I think Glenn, we probably won't
get the interview him and tis the Super Bowl, but
Glenn or sala or Flora is out of Minnesota, you
should be available.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Now are you talking about sala as the head coach
or sala as the coordinator?
Speaker 8 (23:16):
One?
Speaker 3 (23:17):
Yeah, yeah, I didn't think he got a fair shake
of the Jets, be honest with you. A lot of
changes going on there, but maybe he did. I mean
I don't know exactly how how long he was there,
but yeah, who else?
Speaker 4 (23:34):
Who else? You thinking?
Speaker 8 (23:36):
Wow? Those are three main thing. But I think Jason
Wenton will be on the team. And some sort of fashion,
you know, not a head coach, but some sort of
fashion on the coaching staff would be cool.
Speaker 6 (23:48):
You know.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
The only other people that I would think in mind
for me a person realistically, I bet you know a
thing would be outside would be a I don't want it,
but tell him more. Or John Bruden but playing Flores
or Salah.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
All right, all right, Rick, appreciate it, Thanks for the call.
You know, the one name I haven't heard from fans
really hear from media. I mean the names out there,
I haven't heard fans saying they would like Pete Carroll
that that that would be one that you know. He's older,
(24:27):
he's of seventy four. Doesn't really look at it or acted,
but you know it's still you know he's but he
usually you know he's he's He builds teams, good coaching
staff usually around him, and has a nice coaching Tree,
I believe, so that would that would be that would
definitely be an interesting move there. Uh Salah, I'm hearing
(24:50):
More's defensive coordinator type guy. And again I like Eberflus
there also depends on who your coach is. Depends on
who your head coach is, because you know, you get
a young you get a Kellen Moore in here, who's
never never coached as a head coach before.
Speaker 4 (25:08):
I would love to.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
Have Mike Zimmer as the defensive coordinator back for that.
Mike Zimmers coached eight years in the league as a
head coach for the Vikings, So in need guys like that.
You know, he's never he's he hasn't had a lot
of clock management and all that. That's the thing about
offensive coordinators that haven't done it, you know before. Like
it's third and three. They're calling up a play on
(25:32):
third and three to get it. This is my best
play on third and three. I'm gonna pass it here
and do this. Okay, yeah, but it's a minute thirty
two seconds. They don't have a time out. I understand
you want to get the first down and running it
up the middle is probably not going to get it,
but it does take forty seconds off the clock.
Speaker 4 (25:45):
We can punt it.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
We have a great punter going to get it down
to the ten yard line. Let him go, you know,
ninety yards and forty five seconds. It's probably the smart
play here. Sometimes offensive coordinators sitting there to going you
just told me to get the first down and you know,
so you have to do a little bit of both.
So I think having a guy you can that can
help manage that with you would be important there. So
it's like everything starts the top. Who's your head coach?
Speaker 4 (26:08):
And then what do you need?
Speaker 3 (26:09):
What what? What would be lacking here? If it's Kellen
Moore or if it's a defensive minded coach or whatever
it is, then you can kind of figure out from there,
like like you should. No I have we have seen
it here where the coordinator is hired first and then
always creates a weird, you know, dynamic. But I do
think in this case, head coach figure out what's needed
(26:32):
and then go to the coordinators from there. All right,
if we still have Josh on the line, Josh in Chicago.
Speaker 15 (26:37):
Hey, Nick, how you doing good man?
Speaker 11 (26:39):
How are you not bad?
Speaker 15 (26:40):
Tuning in kind of late today and missed the start
of the show. So I hope I'm not being repetitive.
Speaker 4 (26:44):
Oh you're good, this is the im to be repet
that's right.
Speaker 15 (26:49):
What else can we talk about now? You know, it's
just speculation about where we're going.
Speaker 13 (26:54):
I know that there's been.
Speaker 15 (26:54):
Some fans out there talking about John Gruden, so I
just want to say, like, I really hope that they
don't go with Grud And I know he's been doing
a lot of video breakdown stuff, but it's I think
it's really easy to sit up there and break down videos.
It's different to actually be a coach and have the
locker room on your side. I'm not mad about losing
Mike McCarthy. I'm not necessarily happy about it either. It
just kind of is what it is. He got five
(27:15):
years and I think, you know, time to move on
isn't a bad thing. But I really hope when they
do this coaching search, I really hope that we don't
just cop to Dion or Jason Winton, because I think
it's hard to get away from a coach who's got
so much history, like Jason Garrett was with the team
right Like, I think it took a long time to
(27:35):
get away from him because of the history he had
with the organization, and I want somebody who's maybe an
outside voice who doesn't have all that history. That's just
me personally. I don't have names, to be honest with you,
I don't. I do kind of wonder though, if you've
heard anything about Will McClay because I think that that's
a domino that needs to be decided and allowing him
to help with the coaching search or you know, finding
(27:57):
out who's going to be the replacement for Will McLay.
I think really important now to see what's going to happen,
and I'll take that off the air.
Speaker 6 (28:03):
They thick.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Yeah, well, Josh, that's one of the most important aspects
of this whole thing that has probably been talked about
the least. And it's not like it's been ignored. It's
just hasn't been talked about it as much as it
should be. Will McClay dynamic because you know, some people
(28:26):
wanted Mike back, some people didn't, some people kind of
like you, were a little bit indifferent. I don't know
anybody that has said they didn't want Will McClay back,
and I don't know people that are even indifferent about it.
So you got to remember this was a big year
for him. I had a conversation with him last year
(28:47):
almost about this time when it was determined he was
going to come back, he was not going to take
the GM jobs. He told me he said, hey, my
son is eighteen years old, doesn't live with him. He
lives nearby, but his son is here. Could couldn't move
with them, is what I'm trying to say. And so
he made a commitment to him till he was eighteen
and graduated high school, which is this year, so in
(29:09):
his last year of his contract. That's kind of the
way it worked out. So everybody kind of knew this
could be the time that Will McClay was moving on
and if he wanted to. And I remember him saying
to me, we'll see what happens with all this situation.
I'm not saying there's huge beef or anything like that.
I just think, you know, it's different for a coach.
(29:29):
I mean, it's different for a scouting director to kind
of see, you don't really want to change coaches all
the time, but you know, if you're going to do it,
how much change are you really making? And and then
what kind of say does he have in the process
a lot. Like you said, that contract hasn't been worked out,
but his contract goes until the end of the draft,
so they don't have to do that right away. But
(29:50):
I do think, you know, timing of all this matters,
and I do think that that, you know, whoever is
hired as head coach, I I think Will's going to
have a say in it, and I think he should.
He's earned that, and so it's a big part of it.
I don't even know if I'm if you're picking up
what I'm putting down here, but but I think it's
important for Will McLay to be here, and I think
(30:12):
they know that. Everybody knows that, and that that that
goes into some of the decisions that have been made.
All right, let's go to Travis in San Antonio.
Speaker 11 (30:20):
Nick, what's going on?
Speaker 4 (30:21):
How are you?
Speaker 11 (30:22):
I'm good, Uh, just absorbing the news yesterday. I kind
of figured, uh, we were talking about it in the
space a couple of days ago and figured it was
you know, we always it's the cliche deadlines to make deals,
but in this case, or break deals. So I kind
of figured it was coming sooner than later. So it
wasn't totally shocked by the timing I do want to
throw out there because I know, you know, we live
in a I'm not telling you anything you don't know,
(30:44):
in a super reactionary world nowadays, and I know Jason
wins Nay has been thrown out there. I'm actually not
as against it. I know I heard that, I just
heard the last call, but I'm actually I want to
throw at you like this. I'm actually not as against
it as some people might.
Speaker 6 (31:01):
Like.
Speaker 11 (31:01):
I would rather go honestly, Nick, I'm not gonna give
it because there's names I prefer like obviously the Ben Johnson's,
Aaron Glenn's like cool. But if they're going to go
a totally alternate direction, which has been sort of mentioned
as you know, it's possibly they could go that way
where they go with a Witting I'm not totally dismissing
it because you mentioned the name that I think he's
linked to, Like if you tell me the coordinators are,
(31:22):
if it's Witting, right, Like, that's the main thing, because
if you bring in like an eber flu swas a
relationship with him. If you bring in I'm gonna throw
out a name for you, Josh McCown, who did a
heck of a job with Sam Darnold this year as
a quarterback coach, and could be you know, he's kind
of a budding name. Is like an OC type of guy.
So I'm just I guess what I'm saying is I'm
trying to be open in this in this search and
(31:43):
not just completely dismiss it, because I do think the
one thing you can say about Jason we know as
far as you know, Rob has mentioned this about being
a good walk around coach. I think he would be
a good walk around guy. I think he would. He's
a very high Q guy. He's a detail oriented guy.
So I do think from a preparationist sandpoint, which was
an issue, I do think he checks some boxes. Now
obviously he doesn't check the experience one. But I mean,
(32:05):
if we're going to go off the cuff and go
a different direction, I don't think it's as easy to
just be I would rather go this route than go
into Dean route personally. Yeah, so let's just see what
you think.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Yeah, here's here's another thing that I'll take off the air,
but which would be interested to get anyone's response to this.
But Jason Witten, he's a cowboy. Of course, he did
play one year for the Raiders. Pretty sure Gruden was
(32:35):
the coach. So if if Witton was the head coach
and needed an experienced offensive coordinator who maybe has been
really good in the league and at times, but he's
now out of the league for other reasons and needs
to get back in it, how about that? As you Rosie,
I don't know if I love any of this. I'm
(32:56):
just saying I'm just talking to talk here, you know,
but this the time we can throw all of it
out there. I like the Josh McCown move again. It's
weird because it's it's like you don't you don't know
what you need. It's like cooking a meal and you're like,
all right, what are the sides going to be? You know,
(33:17):
look what are the sides? And you're like, well, are
we doing fries?
Speaker 6 (33:20):
Here?
Speaker 4 (33:20):
Are we doing mashed potato?
Speaker 3 (33:21):
I mean?
Speaker 4 (33:21):
What are we doing?
Speaker 3 (33:22):
What's what's what are we making? Are we making burgers?
Are we're making steak?
Speaker 6 (33:26):
I mean?
Speaker 4 (33:26):
Or what I mean?
Speaker 3 (33:27):
So that's what's weird, is like I don't know what
side it is because I don't know what the main
course is going to be just yet, and then I
don't know what else we need.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
To go and go around it.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
So let's figure that part out and the head coach
is the main course. But there's a lot of names.
Here's another one to throw out, especially if Kellen Morris
in play. How about Doug Nussmeyer. You know he's the
quarterbacks coach. I believe in Philly it could be your
offensive coordinator and worked with Dak. Worked well with Dak.
So again another names one way or an. I think
(34:00):
you're going to see some familiar faces on the coaching staff,
whether it be guys that have played here or coached here.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
We're both all right, let's go to Joe and Stanford.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Joe, what's how are you doing?
Speaker 15 (34:14):
Pretty good?
Speaker 6 (34:15):
Man?
Speaker 16 (34:15):
Have much stuff.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
It's like old.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
Times, man, remember when you and I were just running
this thing. You were you were the one starting us
off every day. Now you've got had to go get
a job or get another job and work different hours
and all this.
Speaker 4 (34:27):
Bye bye.
Speaker 5 (34:28):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 16 (34:29):
Well there for a while it was me and like
two or three other callers for about the first five
or six ship.
Speaker 4 (34:34):
Yeah yeah, but we were wondering, like is this a
good idea?
Speaker 3 (34:37):
Like you know, like no, now, it's gonna be great
to be fine now now it's hard to get in,
which is great?
Speaker 4 (34:43):
Is that credit?
Speaker 3 (34:44):
But hey, you were one of the pioneers, and I
appreciate that. I always always appreciate that.
Speaker 16 (34:49):
Right on, Well you're doing a good thing, brother, So
thank you. I love like as your call call is
breaking into me when I was about to get on,
you were talking about the wit and greeny thing. I
love that. I absolutely love that idea. Yeah, I love
I love Written as a leader. I think he's a
great leader. I mean, you know him better than a
(35:10):
lot of us would know him, so, I mean, you
know what kind of duty is. But I think he's
an amazing person. So I mean getting getting now, why
you can't? I think it would not shock me at all.
In fact, I am going to bet money on the
line for him to be the coach because right now
(35:30):
there's good money to be made on that.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
Yeah, so I think I would.
Speaker 16 (35:35):
I like Grittin too, so I would be okay with
Gruden being there too.
Speaker 5 (35:39):
But you know, like you say, man.
Speaker 15 (35:41):
It's such a crapshoot right now.
Speaker 16 (35:43):
Who knows what the Joneses are even thinking?
Speaker 4 (35:45):
No, no, but it's going to be.
Speaker 3 (35:49):
You know, it'll be a splash, I would, Well, I
say that I don't think Kellen Moore would be something
that that would would excite the fan base.
Speaker 16 (35:59):
No, not at all. You know, it's not I don't
anything against I think. I mean, he's obviously a good
coach and a good offensive mine. I just don't know,
he doesn't inspire me. I just I think about all
them men in that locker room. He seems like a
little kid, and I know he's not obviously, but I
don't know, there's something about him that just doesn't as
(36:21):
a head coach in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
Well, what it is is the fact that he looks
like he's in the ninth grade.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
I mean, that's what it is. That's what it is.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
I mean, but you know, I was It's interesting, though,
there's a couple other coaches in the league that are
having some success. One of them is in Minnesota O'Connell.
The other one is is it Zach Taylor from the
from the Bengals. I mean, they all look like they
could just go to high school and just ride to
school together like all of that. So it's not like,
I mean, and that happens. I mean, I was looking
(36:50):
at O'Connor last night thinking. Really, it's so much difference
than you know, than than Kellen Moore here.
Speaker 4 (36:55):
It's just it's just the look. It's just the look of.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
Like, you know, he's like he's never he's never shaved
because he has never had to and never needed to.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
You know, That's what it looks like, you know, from
Kellen Moore.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
But more than anything, it's not it's not about look,
it's about do you have what it takes to stand
in front of grown men and get them to play
for you at every single snap, every single play, when
you're not when you're hurt?
Speaker 4 (37:19):
Do you do.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
You have what it takes? And the Dan Campbell's you
know that like that raw ross stuff like that, it goes,
it goes a little bit. I don't know if it
goes a long way, but it it. There's something to
be said for that. You know, he said this is
what he was gonna do. They were gonna bite kneecaps,
and that's what they are. That's what they that's what
they're doing. But you wonder, you know, with some of
(37:42):
these coaches, what you know, how are they going to
be able to motivate you know?
Speaker 16 (37:46):
Yeah, well, I think witness from that school and that's
why he's my number one choice.
Speaker 3 (37:50):
Yeah, well, I agree, all right, Joe, you got anything
else you good?
Speaker 16 (37:55):
No, No, thanks for having me on, brother.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
All right, appreciate that, all right, I take care. All right,
all right, let's do a let's go to break here
one more time. I'm gonna go to break and we'll
come back and close the show out with one more call.
Speaker 14 (38:11):

Speaker 10 (38:42):
There is no eye in Dallas. There is no eye
in heart, either no eye in blue star or a
loan star for that matter. And there's no eye in
how about them Cowboys? Smeerenough knows there's no eye in football.
Football is a wee thing and experience that is best
enjoyed together with good drinks and good folks. Homer, we
rally together, we cry together, and we always rally cry
(39:04):
together because there's definitely no eye in Cowboys fans, Samir enough.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
We do game days.
Speaker 10 (39:10):
Please drink responsibly.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
It's a Cowboys storyline.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
All right, back here on Cowboys storyline. Let's get one
more call in before we finished this show today. Let's
go to Dylan in Northport, Florida. Dylan, what's up man?
Speaker 17 (39:32):
Hey, mix a real quick here. I know you're up
against the clock. So I'm glad that it didn't work
out for Mike because it sounds like Jerry wanted to
put him on a two year deal and I just
feel like if he was going to be extended, it
need to be for the length of the X contract extension.
Otherwise you're just wasting years off of his extension. You know,
you fired Matt year three out of Dax four years.
It's like, Okay, well, I guess that was a waste
of time for Dak. So I'm glad that didn't work out.
(39:56):
But some of the next guy, I want a badass
coach that just puts an end to all the buddy,
but stuff like, obviously I want a guy that knows
what he's doing. But like, from an attitude perspective, let's
stop with like cauling coach unk and like your best
friend and like all that stuff. But that's just gets
somebody who's an authority figure who puts a little bit
of fear in guys. Not have to be a jerk,
but it's a little bit of respect and authority goes
(40:17):
a long way, I think, And we've been missing that
for quite some time.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
Yeah, yeah, And I mean, and that's the thing. Who
among this group of coaches, and it could be someone
we don't even know about, but who among this group
do you think has that?
Speaker 17 (40:31):
The only guy I can think of that's an actual
legitimate possibility I think is probably Jon Gruden, and I
don't I'm not in love with it, but I think
personality wise he fits obviously Witt and fits that. But
Witton doesn't have a ton of experience, so I just
want to bring him as a positional coach that you
can do that. But an attitude like Gruden I think
would would help shape up the organization. The only issue
(40:53):
was the is he too old school with his new
wave of players would be not only concerned.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
Yeah, and well there's some other issues too, it seems like,
I mean, I don't I don't know how it would
go with the league right now. I know there's some
again I haven't even looked at the investigation stuff like that.
I know that there's been some things going on from
the league. He's just been out of it. So uh again,
I don't know how how that would they have to
(41:17):
navigate that to get him back again. These are things
I had I don't really know about, But yeah, you're right.
From a personality standpoint like that, he would be someone
like that.
Speaker 13 (41:27):
You know.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
I think Aaron Glenn would as well. If you can
get there, if you can get to him and interview him,
then that would be that would be interesting too.
Speaker 17 (41:38):
Yeah, and you know, I prefer an offensive guy personally,
like like, obviously Ben Jonson's the biggest name out there.
I don't think that's really anybody in play here. I
don't think Ben Johnson. He's still picky with his teams.
I'm not sure he's gonna want to come to Dallas anyways.
Speaker 15 (41:51):
But I like that.
Speaker 17 (41:52):
I like Aaron. If you're going to go a defensive
mind Yeah, I think that's the name I keep hearing too,
Aaron Glenn, Yeah, good choice.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
Well, you know it's thanks Dylan for the call. I
appreciate it. You know that there's another element to this too,
is that if you wait, you might have the shot.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
Like you know, a lot of.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
People think, well Ben Johnson, he can go anywhere and
all this stuff, Well if you can't interview him till
they're done playing, I don't know how many coaches want
to wait? You know, are the Bears gonna wait? And
the Raiders and whoever else is open Jacksonville? I mean,
is everyone waiting, you know, just just going for it?
Because if that's the case, you know, it's kind of
(42:31):
like it's kind of like what they say in the
shark tank. You know, if you if you're the last,
if you're the last shark, then the price goes down
a little bit. So again, I just wonder who who's
gonna sit here and wait for it?
Speaker 4 (42:43):
You know. But again, lots to.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
Talk about, a lot of good stuff, and I'm glad
we will do this every Wednesday throughout the off season
nine thirty Central. We go for about an hour and
fifteen minutes, hour and twenty minutes to the next podcast.
Speaker 4 (42:59):
So we'll be doing and that.
Speaker 3 (43:00):
Every day, even tomorrow as well. Wednesday. Wednesday morning, nine thirty,
we'll talk more about it. And that's the beauty of
this whole thing. You know, it could change a lot
every day, you know, like you wake up one morning.
I mean even from yesterday to today. It's it was,
you know, you didn't even know how serious things were
(43:23):
with Dion, and now you know they're like, oh okay,
now they talked.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
They had they talked.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
And and Dion was quoted, you know by saying saying
very intrigued. Uh believes in Jerry and and and believes
in what they're doing, but also loves Boulder and and
that that also could mean but the money wasn't exactly
what I thought, you know, you say the right things
and that stuff. So again, it's always changing, it always
(43:49):
you know, we'll talk more about it tomorrow for Chris Bean,
I'm Nick Eatman. We'll see you next time. On Cowboys Storyline.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
Speaker 10 (44:02):
Cowboy
