Speaker 2 (00:11):
This is Cowboys Storyline with Nick Eatman.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
What is up? Welcome to Cowboys Storyline. I am Nick Eatman,
and it is our first off season show of twenty
twenty five. First time that we've been able to talk
about the season that was or wasn't I guess in
this case Cowboys seven and ten and then's already on
the clock. Looks like they're gonna pick twelfth. We know
(00:44):
the opponents for the twenty twenty five season. We don't
know the schedule. Obviously, the schedule will come out probably
May after the draft. I don't know a lot of
a lot of things at this point, including coaching situation.
All the coaches will be free agents. We know we've
here rumors and speculations and things like that, and we
can talk about some of that, but I want to
(01:04):
hear from you guys. Aight, aight a eight five five
two two ninety seven. Gonna be a little bit of
a different show this time around, so kind of bear
with us. Well, we'll take some breaks a little bit
at different times, but still gonna have some fun gonna
talk about Cowboys football and what they need to do
moving forward. So let's get right to the phone lines.
Let's start us off. Anthony and Miami. What's up? Man?
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Make the quick? Have a year in my god?
Speaker 5 (01:28):
Have you new year?
Speaker 1 (01:28):
How you doing? Let's be Anthony the Quick? How about that?
Speaker 6 (01:31):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (01:32):
I love it, baby, I love it. I'm gonna be
quick and simple. I found the problem in these two weeks.
I took off. I follwed a major issue. And Cole,
I'm gonna give Lester a shout out, and let's play
the offensive defense all at the same time until the Cowboys,
whether whoever is the coach, whether the coach might stage,
or whoever comes in. You have to fix the red
zone issues. Even when we were scoring a lot of
(01:54):
points the last couple of years, we couldn't score in
the red zone. And look how dangerus we would have been.
You can't have a weapon like Brandy All but kicking
field goals from the twenty two yard line, twenty eight
yard line. He's a weapon. He needs to be kicking
forties and fifties. So you have to score. And it
was hurting us, killing us. So we have to do
that and that's my number one issue with the Cowboys
going to this new season. That's all I have to say.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Nick, all right, man, appreciate it, Thank you for the call.
You know, I don't disagree. I've always I've always thought
that you know, when you can run the football, when
they know you're going to run, or when it gets
when it gets down there tight inside the ten yard line,
twelve yard line. Uh, that's where you've got to be
able to get three, four or five yards running the football.
(02:36):
And and and it's it's bad enough when you you
don't think you can even do it where you're just
passing the ball all around. You got to get creative
in the play calling. That's something that I think has
to get better too. It's not just about not having
the big guys up front to push people back. You
got to get creative and getting guys open and figuring
out ways do that. And then you also have to
have playmakers that can just go win one on one.
(02:58):
You know, you it's me versus is you. I'm gonna
go up and catch the ball. You know you saw
McLaurin do it to win the game. Brandon Cooks has
to do that at times, you know, you got to
do that CD. You got to win those ferguson you
gotta come down with that ball. So it's not just
play calling, it's not just old line. The playmakers have
to be have to do what that is and make plays.
All right, it's going to Chuck D. Bridge City, Texas,
(03:21):
Chuck D.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Chuck.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
What's up man?
Speaker 4 (03:25):
How you doing good?
Speaker 7 (03:27):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (03:28):
It's all I got, man.
Speaker 9 (03:29):
What is your gut feeling?
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Is Mike staying or going?
Speaker 5 (03:32):
I'm thinking he's gonna stay and let's see what you
got on that.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
All right? Well, uh, I'll tell you what. This has
gone back and forth. I I have a feeling he'll
probably stay. I I think I think that that he'll
That's that's what my gut feeling. I just don't see
a change being made.
Speaker 6 (03:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
From that standpoint, I think they'll make some other changes.
I think the coaching staff will look different whether he's
here or not. But but I I just I think
that that Jerry has said enough things that that he
just respects what Mike has done. And and there's other
factors involved too, you know. I think he believes you
(04:17):
gotta look at contracts, gotta look at coaches contracts. I
know a lot of people don't think about that because
there's no salary cap to it, but it matters. And
look at what coaches get paid. Find out what what
McCarthy's getting paid, and then you'll get a better understanding
of kind of what's happening here. So I think I
(04:38):
think Mike will come back, but I think it's it's
close right now. I don't know. I want to say
it's fifty to fifty, but I think there's some there's
some other options on the table, but I think at
the end of the day, I would be really surprised
if he's not back. I don't know if I talking
in circles there, but if so, that's kind of what
I do. All right, let's take one more call before
(04:59):
going to break tracks. I have us in San Antonio.
Speaker 9 (05:01):
What's up, Good afternoon.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
How are you guys doing good? How are you doing good?
Speaker 9 (05:06):
I'm gonna hit this quick for you, real quick. I'm
with you. I think it's fifty to fifty.
Speaker 6 (05:11):
Nick.
Speaker 9 (05:11):
I go back and forth. Every time I see a
tweet from a report, it's I go, he's gone, he's back.
He's gone, He's back. So it's fifty fifty to me.
I do hope if they do move on, I've been saying,
I hope they cast a wide net, talk to a
bunch of different coaches and get all the different ideas
you can on this team, what they would do, who
they would bring in. And then lastly, as we get
into the draft stuff, I know it's been kicked around.
(05:33):
Do you take a guy early or late as far
as running back goes, And I'm going to say I'm
on the minority of IF gents there at twelve. I'm
not going away from that guy. I need an incident
impact guy, and I need to do the same thing
in the second round this year. They can't afford to
do the hurt guy or not available guy this year.
So let you go and have a great week.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Thank you so much, Travis. I appreciate that, and I
agree that second round pick. You know, if you're not
changing up what you do in free agent, see if
you're if you're not going to go that route and
do anything different, then you can't afford to have a
second round pick that that maybe he's gonna hit, maybe
he doesn't. I mean, you got to have a good, solid,
(06:12):
a player that's ready, ready to contribute, and other than
tray Von Diggs. They really haven't had that that guy
that They've kind of taken flyers on different players for
whatever the reason. I'm with you about the running back though,
I I went and did little research on that. I
was playing on writing a story on Dallas Cowboys dot
Com on that.
Speaker 10 (06:32):
But you know the.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
History the last few years. I went back and looked
at the last six years of Pro Bowl running backs.
There's forty different selections of Pro Bowls. Not forty guys
because someone guy's gone more than once, but in the
last forty Pro Bowl selections, your your first and second
round picks make up thirty two of those forty forty
Pro Bowl selections first and most of them in the
(06:56):
second round. And then there's there's four of them are
third round, So thirty six out of forty guys you got.
You got a couple fourth rounders, one was Pollard, you
got a fifth rounder undrafted guy, but for the most part,
it's first second round. So yeah, you can you can
get a running back in any round. But if you
want somebody special to really making a difference, you know
(07:17):
that hasn't changed over the years. Their first second round.
So yeah, if it's not genty in the first round,
then then definitely I'd be looking at somebody in the
second for sure. All right, let's take our first break
here on Cowboys storyline. We'll be right back after this.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
All right, welcome back to Cowboys storyline here as we
talk about the twenty twenty five off season. Nick Eatman
joined by you guys on the phone. We're going to
start it off with start this segment off in Kansas City,
Brian and Kansas City. What's up? Man?
Speaker 10 (09:25):
Well, first, I just want to apologize for sending the
storm your way.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
That's okay, that's all right, We'll be ready.
Speaker 10 (09:32):
Yes, sir, hey, I got My first thought is actually
I think it starts with making a decision on Will
McLay even before McCarthy, just my personal opinion, that's just
what I would like to see. And then for me,
my focus would be on fixing the trenches in player personnel.
(09:53):
What do you think is your focus? Would you want
it to be the focus of the Cowboys in player personnel?
What would your first choice? B And I'll hang up
and listen. Man, have a good one.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Thank you. Well, it's funny how you say that you
talk about Will McClay and then also player personnel, which
is he's the vice president of that. But yeah, I
agree with that Will McClay. I mean, I do what
I need to do to get him locked up and
to return to the Cowboys next season and years you
(10:24):
know beyond that, and you know if he wants a
long term deal, I think he's earned that. And I
think that you know that's what you need. You want continuity.
You sometimes players have to change, the coaches a lot
of them change. But if you know your continuity of
of what of what you're looking for here with the
Jones family and and and a guy like Will McClay,
which you know, I think he knows how to adapt
well to the different styles that we're seeing in the game.
(10:47):
So I think he would be great there. As far
as I mean he has been great, I think it'd
be great to keep him moving forward. Player personnel wise,
you know, I'm I think there's just so many needs.
I just think you need catalytic players. You just you
need guys that are gonna be difference makers and and
and that's if that's state in the obvious, then that's
state in the obvious. But I don't I don't have
(11:10):
to go into this going I gotta have an offensive lineman,
I gotta have a guard. If I don't have Zach Martin,
I gotta have a guard. Or I need the running back,
or I need that path rusher. I mean, I just
think when you're sitting there at twelve, who's there that
you're like, Wow, this guy's still around, you know, Ceedee
Lamb was there at seventeen. They didn't ever think that,
(11:30):
and they didn't need that. They didn't think, but they're like,
we gotta take this guy. You know, Michah Parsons was there.
They were thinking about other other spots, but Michah Parson's there,
and Michael Parsons can make a difference. So at twelve,
there is gonna be someone there. And it's in every
quarterback that jumps into this going oh he could go
top ten, do it, Get up there, get in there
(11:51):
and push people back, push push good players back. That's
what happens. So I could if it's a pass rusher
next to Micah, bring it. If it's an offensive tackle, okay, guard, yes, linebacker, well,
he's gonna to be a bad asset at linebacker at
twelve to do that. But either way, I just think
you have so many needs it didn't have to be
one thing. But but you know, somebody's going to stop
(12:14):
the run on defense, so that's going to have to
happen in the draft or definitely in free agency as well.
All right, let's go to Irene Falls Church, Virginia.
Speaker 15 (12:24):
Hey, hey, good afternoon.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Are you so late?
Speaker 8 (12:27):
So weird?
Speaker 15 (12:27):
So late? I'm good, I'm good. So it's over, the
season is over. We can we can send this one
to the moon on a rocket ship because I cannot
say it was fun.
Speaker 11 (12:37):
But you know what, this.
Speaker 15 (12:38):
Show and the friendships we developed over the last year
and a half made it certainly more tolerable to deal with.
So that's cool. And usually, if you remember last season,
I needed like a long break after the way that season.
Speaker 13 (12:50):
Ended, right.
Speaker 15 (12:51):
I don't know if there was just that this one
was sort of signs were there that it was over
pretty early on or just the friendships again on this
sh show. But I don't need to break here, I am.
So that's that's kind of cool. I wanted to bring
up something, so I brought this up last offseason. I'm
a little bit frustrated to hear it again coming up
this offseason. But there was a survey that the players
(13:15):
do and two things that came up were training staff
and weight room. And I know Jane Slater came out
with the U and I wouldn't call it a report,
but a little a sound bite yesterday that a player
mentioned getting more people in the weight room and in
the training room to help with injuries. I'm glad that
(13:37):
they respect the guys that are there, Brown and you know,
but I don't understand why this is still a problem
in a multi billion dollar team. But I want that
to be fixed. That's my number one, like easy fixed.
And then I heard I heard what you said about
you know, leaning towards Mike coming back. So if that's
(13:58):
going to be the case, then then I need a
new play caller. And if i'm Jerry, that's like my
one non negotiable.
Speaker 13 (14:04):
Yeah, all right, that's just for me. I'm sure I'll
talk to.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Thanks, Irene. You know that that might be the sticking
point in these conversations of we're gonna have to do
some changes here. We're gonna have to make changes in
the play calling. And if and if that's something that
that you know, is something something that Mike won't budge on,
then maybe that that will be Again I say this,
(14:28):
maybe I mean I agree with you, Irene. I don't
know if if that's if that's what Jerry has to have,
you know, has to have happened here, but they've they've
got to do something different. And in the offense, the
play calling, and you red zone all that. I mean,
I think that the way the analytics are now in
the NFL is that teams know what you're, what you do,
(14:51):
what you like to do. So you've got to figure
out a way to do things different all the time,
and and and have a mixed bag of stuff. And
you can't just say, well, this is what works for me.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
It's not high school where where you could just run
over people and they can't stop it. Now they can
stop things here. You've got to figure out how to adapt.
And I think that's something that just has to happen there.
So but but you know, I agree with you when
it comes to when it comes to Mike on the
play call them, I think that there has to be
some kind of changes there. All right, let's go to
(15:21):
Zach in Atlanta.
Speaker 16 (15:23):
Nick, how are you, buddy good?
Speaker 1 (15:24):
How are you doing?
Speaker 16 (15:26):
I'm good man. Hey, I just want to say thank
you ten times over to you, to Beam everybody for
doing this show. Really means a lot. Sad to see
the season go, but the off season is beginning. But
just a question and I'll get out of here. For you,
what are one or two moments you're going to carry
(15:48):
with you from this season, and then where does this
season rank for you as far as what you've covered,
you know, over the years. So so I got man,
thank you.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
Thanks well. I think this will be remembered as the
season where fill in the blank happened. It's just there's
just weird things that happened this year. And so when
you think about, you know, the time that Trayvon Diggs
comes out of the locker room and you're starting to,
(16:20):
you know, argue with a reporter, or the time Jerry
tried to fire people on the fan, you know in
the middle of the season, or the time that there
was falling debris from the from the roof at the stadium,
or that there was a fire at training camp, or
or you know, I mean the whole Zeke situation, all
the injuries that happened there, all all your Pro Bowl
guys getting hurt, putting on ir doc included as hamstring
(16:43):
comes off the bone on the days having his best
rushing performance. I mean, you name it. You know, from
the sun the sun at at and T Stadium to
the sun here at the Star, I mean, can't get
away from it. It was it was comical at times
because it wasn't I mean, if you didn't if you
didn't laugh, you'd cry. So it was that type of season.
(17:04):
I'll just remember from all the unique things that happened there,
and you know, in some some cool moments, some cool plays.
You know, I've been here twenty six seasons now. That
Turpin touchdown against Washington is going to be a top
ten forever. I mean, it's just not going to be beaten.
There would he Danceler Turpin? Those two, right, there were
(17:25):
two of the best plays that I've ever seen covering
this team. All Right, we have time for Mike Leskoto,
Michael and Bowling Green Kentucky.
Speaker 17 (17:34):
All right, so you can get to the break. I
just got two quick questions for you, Okay, all right.
The first one, You've known Jerry a long time, and
I'm sure you see him here and there. He was
on Landman Sunday, and I really liked what he is. Well,
you know, he played himself, but what he said about family,
(17:55):
his family and everything is that Jerry is that pretty Jerry.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Jerry wasn't acting at all. And I love the show.
By the way I watched, I've seen every episode. I
didn't know he was going to be on it. It
made me even more excited to go watch it that
night Sunday. But but yeah, I love the show and
he's perfect for it, you know, because that's Texas. It's
it's oil, it's all that. But what he was saying
(18:24):
is exactly what he would tell a group of sponsors
that came up here to talk about, you know, working
for the Cowboys. He would be emotional like that, he
would talk about working for his family. And so I
thought it was it was outstanding, and I thought he
did a great job.
Speaker 17 (18:41):
So the other quick one, what is there any chance
of Tarik Heal? I'm sure you've already been asked, but
I hadn't heard anything about it.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
Any chance, all right, Well, thanks Michael for the call.
Appreciate that I can answer that question. I don't think so.
I don't think there's a chance there. I think, you know,
it's tough enough to pay one of the top receivers
in the league in Cdee Lamb, to take on a
contract like that for Tyreek Hill. I just don't see
that being the case. You know, it's bad enough with
(19:13):
quarterback and the receiver and then having to pay Micah.
You add him in there. That just doesn't really make
sense for what they're looking to do. So all right,
let's go to break here on Cowboys storyline. We'll be
right back after this.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
The Cowboys storyline.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
All right back here on Cowboys storyline. It's been a
little bit of a different show today.
Speaker 10 (20:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
We've talked about in the past, what we tape a
TV show out of this as well that airs here
locally in the Dallas Fort Worth and area. So able
to kind of do that, having to be change up
the format a little bit where we took a couple
of breaks, but and remember, we'll be back on every Wednesday.
Went Tomorrow will be our next show, and that will
(21:02):
kind of really be our time slot there nine thirty
Wednesday morning, we'll go for about our fifteen minutes hour
twenty something like that leading up to Cowboys Break. So
we'll be able to do that every Wednesday, and that
starts tomorrow as well. But still we're talking football, talking
Cowboys here right now. Robbie and Coco Beach, Florida is next,
(21:23):
so we'll go to Robbie.
Speaker 6 (21:23):
What's up, hey, Nick?
Speaker 19 (21:25):
How are you today?
Speaker 1 (21:26):
Good? How are you?
Speaker 19 (21:28):
I'm awesome, man. It was a great season because I
enjoyed watching every single game my Cowboys played, and it
was a roller coaster and I got to bent when
it was bad to you. And it's going to be
a great season next year, I hope. My comment is,
I hope we spend a little bit more. I don't
know about money, but how about be more aggressive and
(21:50):
free agency with the needs that we need decide just
our own players. I know sometimes I'll actually I'll just
let you talk about that.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Yeah, I think you're right, Robbie. I appreciate that, and
I appreciate you calling you know you you you called
as much as anybody really top three or four this year.
Thank you so much, uh for that, and not only
not only the consistency and the calls, consistency in the approach,
the mindset, the outlook. Uh never wavered.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
It's not an easy show when the fans are restless,
and I know that you want them to win, but
you also came about it the right way. Thank you
so much. I appreciate that. And always asking about always
asking about my my family, my kids. That's it's genuine
and I appreciate it so uh. Thank you for the call, Robbie.
Speaker 4 (22:39):
Thank you all right.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
You know, free agent wise, I I hear what they
what the Cowboys say they don't have the money, they
don't have the money to do all that, Well, I
think they can get creative. And by getting creative, I
I would be okay sacrificing you know, all of the
players that they're trying to resign where let's say that
(23:04):
they've got to get. You know, they got twenty two
free agents, so they're gonna sign thirteen or fourteen. Some
of them are gonna be re signed. I'm okay with
making it ten and one or two of them are
are a little bit high priced from another team. I
just I just think that's what this team needs. I
(23:26):
think the fans need it. I think the other stars
in the locker room need that too. And yes, you
know you want to resign some of your own players,
but nobody really looks at free agency is signing your
own No one thinks about that. You know, I've done
this analogy before you. Everybody that's got kids will understand this.
(23:48):
When you say, hey, you're gonna get a toy, they're
thinking new toy. They're not thinking about the one. Oh
you get to keep the twenty seven you have up here.
They're like, well that doesn't count. I want this one.
So that's what fans think about free agency too. They're like,
I want this guy. So if you tell them all
of the guys you're going to resigns like, yeah, that's good.
And there's some guys that you want to bring back.
(24:09):
But I think this team needs some new toys and
and and that's that's what needs to happen. And they
need to figure out a way to even if it's
one guy, figure out a way to make a splash,
a splash free agent move because I think I think
this fan base needs it. I think this team needs
that as well. Let's go to Davian and Illinois. Davian,
what's up, Davion? What's up?
Speaker 4 (24:34):
I'm going on?
Speaker 8 (24:35):
Nick? How you guy?
Speaker 1 (24:36):
How you doing?
Speaker 3 (24:38):
Not much?
Speaker 8 (24:38):
Man?
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Just joined the snowy weather. We got up here, all right,
trying to stay warm.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
What's on your mind?
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Well, you know, I guess a burning question I would have,
and uh, I know, I just wish someone would ask
Jerry this. I'm just I'm really curious of the answer. Uh,
why does it take so long big decisions to make
a decision? When you allude to the Hayes in the barn,
but we still kind of just chilling well, how do
(25:12):
you know he's chilling?
Speaker 1 (25:13):
I mean, because he hasn't made a decision.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Well, yeah, I mean one way or the other. I mean,
I mean, I meet Away, I told you I'm I'm
I'm true blue, so I like you Away, but I'm
just it's kind of wow.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Yeah, And you know that. That's what makes me think
there's other factors here, you know. And uh, the longer
it goes on, the less that i'm you know that,
I think, well, I'm leaning towards McCarthy coming back. But
the longer this goes out, this goes on, makes me
(25:48):
think there's other there's other things in play here, other
other coaches maybe that he's looking at or or or
you know, not not necessarily meeting with, inquire about or whatever.
So to seeing who's out there, because that's what you're
always trying to do. You're always trying to see what
are my chances here of I mean, am I bringing
(26:10):
McCarthy back versus who who's available? So I think some
of that's going on as well. I don't think anyone's
chilling around doing nothing. I think that there's some there's
still some decision to be made. When he said, hey,
in the barn He he clarified of nothing McCarthy could
really do as far as changing his mind worth a game,
(26:32):
you know, whether they beat Washington or lose in the
final two seconds or whatever.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Yeah, that game, That game was interesting, I would say.
I mean, of course I had our ridicted or loss anyway,
but it was actually impressive from trades respective, which I mean,
like I said, I think he should he should give
a chance to come back to be the backup. But
I just the way they used him was just kind
of weird. Like in the red zone, why not use
(26:59):
it leg more instead of trying to do fade routes
to a five to nine receiver agreed and a touch fast?
Like what are we what are we doing there? I
don't understand, but something to hear there. And that's kind
of the reason why I've been I've been moved on
from from Mac as a coach. I just, uh, it
was just curious to see that that we have, We
had opportunity maybe to win that game with Trey LANs
(27:22):
at quarterback, and it.
Speaker 8 (27:23):
Just was kind of just yeah, well, just not really done.
Speaker 10 (27:27):
Well.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
I hear you, I hear you there. Thank you, Davian,
Thanks again for the call. Appreciate that. Good to hear
from you. And you know, I didn't like to play
calling it, and to the point where I was kind
of wondering, is there more to this? I mean, are
they are they trying to just see him throw the
ball into the end zone or I mean, is this
is this more than than saying we want to, you know,
(27:50):
win this game here. And I mean, because you know,
if you're not gonna if you're going to just have
him pass the ball in, then probably kick the field
goal right before the half, go up nine to three,
knowing you're going to get the ball back, you know,
to start the third. And they went down and got
a field goal, and they did make it nine to three.
So you know that that might have been a little
bit different if if you play it that way. But
(28:13):
it felt like, Okay, we know we could run it,
and we know you know that Trey could run it,
but what we don't know is this. It felt like
preseason type approach with the way way that went down,
And so I don't know. I mean, I know they
were trying to win the game, but I felt like
they were trying to evaluate just as much. So that's
why it was just weird to kind of look at
it from that perspective. All right, let's go to Sebastian
(28:35):
and Savannah Georgia.
Speaker 20 (28:36):
Sebastian, Hey there that good afternoon, mister, even how we
doing good?
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Good? Thank you appreciate it.
Speaker 20 (28:44):
Hey, I'm doing well myself. I am a If what
you're saying is true, why not do it the game
before that as well? Then you know and that that
gets directly into my point. There was some managerial and
some coaching malpractice going on this season as far as
the hand handling of a lot of players. Bringing back
Ezekiel Elliott, it goes all the way back to training
camp and stashing him like you were going to have
(29:07):
be a big part of the season. There was a
lot of weird things happening this year. And one of
our biggest issues with management is the one year deal
system that they use a lot of the times. Is
often going to come back to buy them, because I
feel like that's something that you do when you're in
the running for a Super Bowl or this year is
our year. We just need a couple of pieces. We'll
get one year deals, see how it works out. They
(29:28):
can help the team out. We move on. We get
to the playoffs. But this particular year, we knew that
a lot of this was going to come back to
by this in the butt, we had a lot of
free agents, so we know that now we're not going
to be big free agent players, especially in the first
days like we always like we usually are. So when
you're talking about the draft and meeting the draft picks,
probably more of this upcoming season than ever. Why are
(29:51):
you trying to win once you're mathematically eliminated, is my question.
I'm not saying tank the game, but you know that's
when you play Trey Lance instead of having Cooper Rush
played three quarters. You see what you have in Trey Lance.
You see what you have, dudees fine, and then you
go and you cut Ezekiel Elliott the following week. A
lot of what they did this year didn't make a
lot of sense. So if you can just shine some
might on that. And the one thing that I think
(30:12):
that they really need to focus on and maybe switch
up is a type of receiver that they go after.
We seem like we go after a lot of the
Noah Brown types. We need some speed. You know, I
was looking at my hometown team in Detroit. Those boys
are fast, and if we're going to compete with Philly
and Detroit and Minnesota, we need so much more speed
on both defense and offense. But you guys, have a
great day. Thanks for taking my call, all.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Right, all right, appreciate it. I think I think the
last few games of the season got caught caught up
in different people's agendas, and fans included, you know, because
you gotta remember, and I've said this before, if you're
a diehard fan and you're calling this show that, then
you are. You're going to be the fan of the
(30:54):
Cowboys in twenty twenty five, you know that, And you're
going to be a fan of the Cowboys in twenty
twenty six, twenty seven. And all that diehard fans that
call this show aren't going anywhere, even the ones that
threatened to do so, they're not. Okay, this just doesn't
happen that way. And we know that. That being said,
it's easy to look at, well, why not do this?
(31:16):
Do that, But you're asking players and coaches that don't
have that same luxury. These coaches, these thirty coaches on
the staff, none of them have a contract for next year.
They need to win, They need their guys to perform
well in the games. They need to do that. So
you know, if and if Jerry stepped in and said no, no,
(31:38):
he's playing, he's playing, and that that got out, y'all
would be the first one up in arms about jer See.
That's the problem with Jerry. He does this, He needles
in all this kind of stuff. So so I think
from a coaching standpoint, there was a different agenda, you
know what I mean. If they're not gonna tell Mike
(31:58):
McCarthy he's back and get him a contract, then why
should he be coaching for next year when he doesn't
know he's gonna be here for next year. Go win
the game, Go beat Philly, Go beat don't don't have
a losing record, go win, Go with two games, finish
nine and eight and and with a win against Philly.
And as bad as that game looked on the scoreboard
at the end, if you watch that game and you
(32:19):
saw how it was being played, there was a chance
to to for that game to be completely different. They
turned the ball over than one team that had a
lot more playmakers started making plays and it went snowballed
from there. But you know, it's just it's it's hard
to come back now and say why are they doing this?
Why are they doing that? These coaches, these players, they
don't have a contract next year. They got to go
(32:39):
out and win and do the best that they can
to put themselves on tape one way or another for
whether it be this team or another team. All right,
it's going to Ali and Florida.
Speaker 13 (32:49):
METSA good afternoon.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
How are you?
Speaker 8 (32:52):
But you're good. I'll make it quick.
Speaker 13 (32:53):
I know you were short Listen. If these couple of
weeks is going to be too much as stress for
you bringing Jake up on a family to Florida, you
go to Dzebo. I know plenty of nice pizza places
for Jacob.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
I know he loved pizza.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Oh yeah, yeah, he'd be okay.
Speaker 13 (33:10):
I just called him, say I love you, thank.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
You, all right, appreciate that. Ali, appreciate that. Love you too.
Speaker 8 (33:17):
Man.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
That's it. That's all. It's all you call for, say,
come to Florida and eat pizza. Like all right, Well,
I know Jacob would be like done. If I can
get out of school, he'd be in. He went back
to school today and he was, he was. He was
already already asking about snow days. Is it possible to
have snow days. Been out twenty two days now, he's
already You're not even at school yet. We'll get another
(33:41):
snow day. Probably gonna happen the way it looks like.
All right, well, I don't have anything for that. I'll
le just thanks again for all the support and all
the you know, just when you call, always have great attitude. Uh,
speaking of great attitudes, kidding, let's go to Robin Vegas.
Speaker 8 (33:57):
Roy, what is man?
Speaker 1 (33:59):
How are you you?
Speaker 5 (34:01):
I'm good, I'm good.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
I'm glad you called.
Speaker 5 (34:04):
You know, we're talking about you know, Jerry needs to
make a splash in free agency, and for the fans, no,
you need to make a move in free agency to win,
to win a championship. That is the only way you
win the championship. In today's NFL. The difference between Philadelphia
(34:26):
and Dallas is their aggressive in trades in the draft,
trading up and free agency. It's not their quarterback, it's
not their coaching. It's look at the difference makers of Philadelphia,
their free agents, AJ Brown, Saquon Barkley, uh and and Jerry.
(34:47):
I don't know what happened to Jerry over the years,
but when did Jerry get comfortable.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
With just making the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (34:54):
Remember, Jerry used to always talk about the super Bowl
in every offseason going back I don't know how when,
and he catched flack and as a Cowboy fan, you know,
even to this day, my friend will always say, you
guys always think you're gonna win the super Bowl. You
know you notice you don't hear that no more.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
Now it's now.
Speaker 5 (35:10):
The Dallas Cowboys now are like the Cleveland Brown Cleveland
should be happy to make the playoffs. You know, Detroit,
before they got really good, would be happy to make
the playoffs with the Dallas Cowboys with some of the
best players. And Jerry now talks like making a playoffs. Yeah,
(35:31):
I'm good with that. No, hell no, if you're not
winning a super Bowl, you're not winning. You think you
think you think Detroit, let's go, let's go back what
five years they were? They were awful. You think if
Detroit doesn't win the super Bowl this year they considered
this a good year, Absolutely not, it'd be disappointing. And unfortunately,
(35:55):
Jerry's gotten comfortable. I don't know if that's age, I
don't know if that's eleven billion dollars, don't know what
it is, but he doesn't talk the same. He doesn't mean.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
Let me ask you this though, if if he lets
Mike McCarthy go okay, I hope so okay. But if
then how can you make the argument that he's okay
with making the playoffs? If if like, if he's okay.
Speaker 5 (36:21):
If he's only okay with making it to the playoffs,
he doesn't care if this team doesn't advance two.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
WHOA, then why would you let go a coach that
that that can, that has the record that he has
and has has had When this quarterbacks healthy, they're twelve
and five. That's three years in a row. So keep
your quarterback healthy. Figure out a way to do that.
So if he moves on from that, he's not. He's
not telling you he's fine with the playoffs. He fired
chan Gaily two years after when he made the playoffs
(36:53):
two years so I think he's ever been a coach
that's been just okay with the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (36:58):
I well, I honestly think last year and this year
are the first two years since he's on this team
that the heat is on him. We always overlooked to Jerry.
We looked at the players, we looked at the coaches.
We looked at whoever, But now we're looking at him,
(37:19):
you know, because he's the constant. That front office is
the constant. Now, yeah, I agree that he wants to win.
He just doesn't want to do what it takes to win.
He's not stupid. He knows I could free up money.
I could go for it. I should go for it.
(37:40):
What is holding Jerry back?
Speaker 4 (37:43):
In your opinion?
Speaker 5 (37:46):
Why do the Cowboys? Okay, we talked about one hundred million,
so let's say eighty mone. We know they could free
up the money. I don't care what happens in twenty
twenty nine. I may not be here. What is holding
him back from saying I could. I could build around
Dak Micah and CD. I could go for it this year.
(38:07):
I could go get me a Mike Rabel. Yeah, I
could throw I could throw fifteen million up, Ben Johnson whatever,
and I could go for it and I got four
year with a wise What is holding Jerry and Steven
back from doing that? In your work?
Speaker 1 (38:24):
You know, Robi, I can't. I can't tell you that
because here, here's why I don't. Here's this is what's
baffling to me. He won't pay fifteen million for a coach.
Speaker 20 (38:33):
He won't.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
I know there's no tax I don't get I don't
and I don't understand that based off of the way
the Cowboys do things here, bigger, better and all that.
You know you don't.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
I'm gonna tell Nick. I'm going to give you my
reason and I get off. I'll tell you why he
still thinks this is nineteen ninety two, ninety three and
that it's a privilege to coach and play for the
Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 6 (38:59):
That is over.
Speaker 5 (39:00):
The Dallas Cowboys are no better than any other team
on the field. It's not a privilege anymore. Ben Johnson
doesn't need to go coach for Dallas. Dallas isn't such
a prime place anymore because of Jerry and Steven, and
they're not willing to spend in free agency. That's I
(39:21):
think the biggest deal. I think coaches could put up
with a medaling owner if they're giving them the tools.
But these coaches look around and said, this dude won't
spend in free agency. If he's not going to spend
a free agency, I can't win. I can't win a championship.
So that's the only reason why I think he won't
drop the dime like you said, and pay the money
(39:43):
to these big coaches.
Speaker 1 (39:44):
Yeah, and that's why. And thanks for the call, Rob,
appreciate that. Remember we're coming back tomorrow back to sort
of our normal time slot, nine thirty two, about almost eleven.
We'll get to go about hour and fifteen, hour and
twenty minutes. Thanks for that. You know, it's it's getting
into the mind of Jerry Jones has not been easy.
Speaker 11 (40:04):
Now.
Speaker 1 (40:04):
You did say you think the last couple of years
is when the heat's been on him. I don't know
about that. I think the heat was on him ever
since he fired Tom Landry in nineteen eighty nine, and
it's stayed on him. It's been warm forever.
Speaker 19 (40:15):
Now.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
It's not not a hot seat because you can't fire himself.
But I'm just saying the heat has stayed on Jerry Jones.
I'll differ there. But you know, if Mike McCarthy comes back,
you know, I looked at this. I looked at the
salaries and I said this earlier. Just google that. Just
google top top twenty salaries of head coaches. There's an
(40:38):
article it'll be right there. Look at that and look
where McCarthy is on that list, and look at where
the guys ten eleven, twelve million that haven't ever been
to the playoffs. Look at that and then and I'll
tell you why when Jerry says, I'd like, I think,
you know, who better can I get than Mike McCarthy,
(40:59):
they should say for that price? So you got a
super Bowl winning coach that that that has won a
super Bowl and he's had a lot of success, and
he's and he's at that level. Again, I don't necessarily
understand it because there's no cap, but that's that's kind
of the way it is. And so if Mike McCarthy
comes back, I think money is going to be a
(41:20):
big factor into that. All right, let's go to Randy
and Texas Cana. Randy, what's up?
Speaker 8 (41:24):
Other? Mom? Where have you been?
Speaker 1 (41:29):
I've been here. I've been here. I've been here. Where
where you've been?
Speaker 8 (41:33):
I've been right here? Dude, I missed the show. I
just my word is killing me. I can every time
I try to call, I look up and the show's
over and I'm like, I'm missing.
Speaker 1 (41:44):
Appreciate well, I appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (41:47):
I know.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
I know you guys work hard, and I know you
know when we moved the time slots around, and you
guys being able to figure it in, figure it out
and call us. I appreciate you. Can't do the show
without you, guys, can right, So what's up? Man?
Speaker 8 (41:59):
I'm not lied. I just wanted to also call in
and say how much I love you guys. I'll leave
it off of man. Every time I hear that dude
even speak, I just smile. And I just wanted to
say I appreciate him. Everybody always throwing my name out there,
even though I hadn't caught in in a while. I'm
still with you guys, just hanging there with me. It's
(42:19):
hard for me to get through. But the only football
thing I was wanting to say is I haven't. Of course,
I've been busy, so I hadn't got to hear all
the subjects. But and if y'all've already talked about this,
cut me off. But there's a certain fellow that looks
like the incredible Halt up north, and since he's attached
to a team, will say, his name is Smiles Merit
(42:43):
and he's from Texas. If I were you Nick, the
next time you robin elbows with Steven, I would plant
a little bug in his ear and saying, hey, you
know we don't always hit with that first pick. Won't
you send one up north and send that fella to
our teams? That could you imagine him and Parsons on
(43:06):
each end of our line. I could play defensive tackle
and they it would be just fine. That would be ridiculous.
And he said, oh loud, he wants to have a
star in his him, so that'll be pretel. I know
you can't say nothing, no, no, I'm doing all the time.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
I can, I can. I can speak to that. I
can speak to a hypothetical situation where you have a
freak of nature that might be pushing thirty years old
or whatever. I but, but, but, but freak of nature's
can you know? They they can they can do that
(43:43):
for a while and play for a while. Yeah, at
a high level. I I don't.
Speaker 8 (43:49):
I would would do it for three years. I would
take three years of him over six years.
Speaker 4 (43:55):
Of a maybe.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
Yeah, I tell you what I would do. And and
I don't think I would take the twelfth pick. What
you know, because you can get a Michael Parsons. I mean,
I don't know if I would take the twelfth pick,
but I would I would see what my forty four
could get, the best player my forty four could get,
I would I would look at that. And and you
(44:16):
think about now second round picks. You're trading a second
round pick, relatively high second round pick. That's that's where
I would go. And I would be fine doing that,
And and knowing you have to go through the draft,
but but you could get you could you can get
a really good player.
Speaker 8 (44:35):
Really you think you could get him for that though
I kind of think he's like higher parsons to them.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
You know, yeah, well, and I'm not talking about any
specific hymns, but what I'm saying is, okay, and you
you can't. But I'm saying, okay, that's probably rich. That
player you're talking about in Cleveland, you're gonna probably get
a first round pick, if not more than that. What
I'm saying is, I would look at the type of
other player. There's other players that don't look like that
(45:03):
and that that that aren't that accomplished, that are set,
that could be you could get for a second round pick,
and and and that would be like your free agency
right there. Now. You still got to take their salary
and replace it with the second round salary that that
you're you know that that you're not paying because you
know that that's a factor too, like you need you know,
(45:24):
that's the thing you got to hit on the draft
because you got to get these guys at cheap. But yeah,
I hear what you're saying. I don't hate the idea.
I would probably go down a little bit, but I'm
looking at my I would be entertaining the second round pick.
You could get a you can get a really good
football player. You think about what's been traded around for third,
fourth fifths. You can get a good player for a
(45:44):
second round, a pretty high second round pick. That's probably
as high as I would go about trading my pick.
Speaker 8 (45:50):
All right, yeah, all right, and uh, all right, guys,
I love y'all and I try to.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
And alrighty no, I hadn't go anywhere, but all right, guys,
sounds good. Have a good one, see you later. Good stuff.
All right, let's uh, let's go to another Rob. This
is Rob in Sydney, Australia.
Speaker 7 (46:09):
Rob, misterman, how are you doing?
Speaker 1 (46:13):
First time caller?
Speaker 7 (46:14):
Very well? How are you? Yes? First time caller? All right,
it is lovely.
Speaker 1 (46:20):
I have to ask because I don't know. I mean,
what time is it.
Speaker 7 (46:25):
It's a it's about a quarter to eight in the
morning here on Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (46:29):
Wednesday. Nice.
Speaker 7 (46:31):
Yeah, so usually when you guys are on it till
like about two or three in the morning.
Speaker 1 (46:36):
So nice. So it's January the eighth.
Speaker 7 (46:39):
There you go on White Ahead, you are.
Speaker 1 (46:42):
I don't know if we've ever had that. I don't
know if anyone's ever called in on a different day.
This is awesome. Well what's what's You've.
Speaker 7 (46:48):
Had one person from Melbourne, Australia.
Speaker 1 (46:50):
That's right, we did. You're right, we did have one
from there, all right. Not from Sydney though, Rob. What's
on your mind? What do you got?
Speaker 7 (46:59):
Well, I'll keep this short. I don't often get to
get through, but I just wanted to express to you
and all the other podcasts, they're just how important these
shows are to the people here. We often get the
games on delay on a Sunday or a Monday here,
and we're quite often at work when the games are
being played, So I usually listen to all the podcasts
(47:22):
in the lead up to the game while the game's
actually on, and then come home and watch it on delay.
But having followed the team for forty years and going
back to the dark old ages where I used to
have to wait a month for magazines to get delivered
for information. You guys just make a world of difference
to following this great team here in Australia.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
Well, thank you for saying that. I appreciate that. And
it sounds like you're the one doing a lot of
the hard work there and having to get the podcast
and stay up late and early and all that kind
of stuff to see what's going on and cas up
on all the news, and appreciate that. I know what
I do.
Speaker 7 (48:02):
The wealth of information you guys provide is just great.
And you know, being on the Storyliners group this year
has added just another dimension to things. Being able to
converse with other fans and get information from such knowledgeable
people there like Dylan. It's it's it's been great, a
real a real game changer for for followers here compared
(48:26):
to the eighties and nineties, when you know you could
barely even watch a game, let alone get information like
we do now.
Speaker 1 (48:33):
Sure for sure, Well that that's it's so awesome man
that I'll ask you this, what do you think this team?
What what would be the number one priority this team
has to do to get better next year.
Speaker 7 (48:48):
Oh my goodness, that is a large question. There's obviously
way more than just one priority. Sure, I think play
call on the offense is probably the first thing that
needs to get fixed, and from there you can start
to address personnel. But obviously a massive draft coming up,
(49:12):
because it's unlikely we're going to be hugely active in
free agency, just going on history and what we can
actually do the reality of it. But I think the
biggest thing we need to change is the offensive play calling.
I don't mind Mike McCarthy as a head coach. I
think he's obviously got a great relationship with players, but
(49:36):
the play calling might have just been lacking in creativity,
and I think that's something we need to address first.
Speaker 1 (49:43):
Well, I don't disagree there, and I think if you're
bringing back, even if you bring back McCarthy, I think
that needs to be addressed one way or the other.
That may be an awkward conversation, but it has to happen.
Speaker 7 (49:55):
Yeah, it might be, but you know there's lots of
those in business.
Speaker 1 (49:58):
Now, there you go. He certainly is, well, you got
anything else?
Speaker 6 (50:03):
No, No, that's it.
Speaker 7 (50:04):
I just really wanted to get across my appreciation for
everything you guys in the other podcast. It's been great
Chris especially obviously across all of them.
Speaker 1 (50:11):
Without a doubt, he's the common denominator to all of them,
so he does a great job. And thank you so
much for calling. And it's good to hear from you
from sitting in the Australia on a Wednesday. And as
Chris pointed out, we'll be back Thursday for you. It'll
be Wednesday's show as well. But let's go one more
caller before we take a last break.
Speaker 6 (50:29):
Champ.
Speaker 1 (50:29):
He's in Nebraska, Nebraska. How are you.
Speaker 6 (50:34):
I'm wonderful man. Well, actually I'm a little under the
weather for the last couple of days, but I'm on
the up and up. I think that's good. That's good. Hey,
quick question. I've been listening to the show and listening
to people talk about potential other players. I don't want
to get into any of the tampering issues that I
know that you guys could get in trouble with, but
the talks you've had about two different players listening to
(50:57):
one on five point three of the Fan this morning, Bobby,
but I was talking about how they could make the
Tyreek Hill thing work, you know, a second round pick,
and the I think the salary he said we'd have
to spend or pay. I believe if I'm not a
the contract you will understand all the cap stuff. But
(51:18):
for basically about three to four million dollars is what
we would owe him for one year. Of course, he'd
probably want to restructure his deal or sign for a
long term or something. And my question is would you
rather have Tyreek or Miles Garrett if we could get
him for a second round pick? With that, I'll let
you go answer and look to talk listening tomorrow, maybe
talk to you. I have a good one.
Speaker 1 (51:39):
All right, thank you, thanks for the call. I appreciate
that you're you're pairing in both those scenarios. You're pairing
a great player with another one, and two great wide receivers.
UH could be dangerous. Uh if you don't win in
(52:00):
the game, it's not gonna be fun too. Two great
wide receivers that have a history of chirping after they
don't get the football. And it's hard to make that
that happy. I mean hard to make them happy. Now,
winning the games helps, but it's tougher to do that
because they don't meet at the football. You don't throw
the football. Two receivers meet at the football. See where
(52:22):
I'm going with this. You get two pass rushers on
the other side. Let's see who can get to the
quarterback first. They can be that could be dangerous. So
if you're asking me one or the other, I would
I would say the pass rusher because because if, if,
if that guy gets two sacks in the first half,
(52:42):
and Micah Parson's probably a little pissed off, that that's
good for for the Cowboys. A pissed off Michah Parsons
is never a bad thing, you know, pissed off lions.
So both would be nice. But two great pass rushers
that would be pretty awesome. There, All right, one more
break here on Cowboys storyline. Will be right back to
(53:02):
wrap it.

Speaker 2 (54:08):
The Cowboys storyline.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
All right back here on Cowboys storyline. It's been a
fun show being with you guys. Been a fun season
all season long. We're not we're not done obviously off season.
We just transition to the off season. But certainly the
daily grind of everything, it's been. It's been fun to
to share it with you guys. Against our second year
of Cowboys storyline has been certainly a lot of fun.
The season didn't go like like we had hoped it
(54:36):
would you know, a lot of ups and downs, a
lot of crazy moments that that happened here. Some some
some fun games, some some good wins, some just just
unique things that that happened all all year long.
Speaker 4 (54:48):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (54:49):
But you know, like with everything in football, there's a
cycle and you just just say, hey, it didn't go
this year, get right back on the horse. We'll do
it again next year and so and then that's what's
kind of fun about the off season. We to see
we know the opponents, the twenty twenty five opponents where
the Cowboys are going to be, got some trips to
to you know, Chicago and Detroit, Denver, Vegas. You know
(55:10):
the Carolina go to New York twice with the Jets.
So you know it'll be tough. It'll be a challenging
schedule for sure. But you know, we'll see what happens
here in free agency first, then the draft. I just
think that that I've said it before, they need catalytic
difference making players. Those kind of guys will help this
(55:30):
football team. And that it could really be at any position.
There's only a couple of positions that you probably wouldn't
even entertain through free agency or the draft. That being said,
if it's an affordable price, go go get a go
make a splash for the player. You know, I think
it is good for the fans. I think it's good
for this team if you can get some some difference makers.
Good for the other players in the locker room to say, hey,
(55:51):
we're committed here, we're bringing these guys in. Good for
the coaches obviously to have some some difference makers, because
you know, you can have two solid players or one
different and maker that makes that average player into solid.
You know, great players make other players great as well.
So I think they need to maybe shift a little
bit of philosophy on what they do in free agency
(56:12):
and maybe make a splash move or two, because I
certainly think that would help this team moving forward. Again.
You know, if it's a running back, I said it.
I think the Cowboys need to go first or second
round with running back. History is showing that those guys
are good making the Pro Bowl. Defensive tackle, defensive line,
pass rush, offensive line. You really can't go wrong with
(56:32):
getting some guys in here. So that's kind of what
I think the offense, I mean, the plan should be
moving forward here. All right, It's been a fun show
we will see you next time. I remember every Wednesday
morning on Cowboys storyline for Chris Bam. I'm NICKI even
see you.
Speaker 11 (56:45):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
