Speaker 1 (00:05):
The NFL never sleeps. The roster is ever evolving, and
it's all about finding the edge. This is the Last Word,
the off season home of the Indianapolis Colts. Now here's
Jeffrey Gorman and Matt Taylor.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Welcome into the Last Word. We're coming to you from
the Indiana Union Construction Industry Radio studio every Friday evening
all throughout the winter and spring. We're gonna be coming
at you live. I'm Jeffrey Gorman, Matt Taylor, voice of
the Colts, is with me. Now. May tay a lot
to go over, but how you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
I'm doing good. Jeffrey wish the off season wasn't here,
but it is here. A lot to talk about, a
lot to break down here on the show.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Earlier today, Chris Ballard met with the media talking the
end of season press conference and I got a lot
of that and some of the keywords that I got
were fix it. That was from Jim Mersey, the Colts owner,
on his message to Chris Ballard. But Colt's finishing up
the season at eight and nine, suffering their second losing
season in the last three not good enough around here.
They've also missed the playoffs for the fourth rate season. Listen, guys,

(01:08):
it's the longest strout rather in playoff in over thirty
years for not making them unbelievable. And that's just not thought.
The standard is set around here by Jim Mersay and
what he's done. So Chris Pallard had to go up
and talk to the media today over some things, and mayta,
I want to just get to the meat and potatoes
of this thing right now here is what he was
talking about when he said if he went too far

(01:28):
with evaluating this team from last season and all the
continuity that he brought back for the twenty twenty four roster.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
Yep, I did. The hardest thing to do is evaluate
your own team. I think this is across the board
in the NFL. And look, I'm emotional and I care
about our players, and I think sometimes I've let that
bleed into how I built the team. Coming off a
year last year when we were nine and eight, I
thought the era. I thought we were playing really good

(01:56):
football at the end of the season, lost a tough
game at the end of Houston could have gone either way,
and I'm thinking, Okay, we're trending up instead of really
creating competition. Throughout and throwing new blood into the locker room,
new players into the locker room, and say, you know what,
we're going to run it back. That was a mistake.

(02:16):
I think Buckner said it. Buckner had some comments that
I thought were just excellent about complacency, about ego. He's right.
Buck's right man enough to say it one, which I love.
And two his assessment was right, and that falls on me.
It does. I bet on that we could bring players

(02:39):
back and they would be hunt they would be as
upset about what happened at the end of the season
last year that they'd want to rectify it. At the
end of the day, we were not able to. And
I didn't do a good enough job creating enough competition
throughout the roster and keep everybody on edge. Look nothing,

(02:59):
no thing's better. Look at the end of the day,
what we do, we do it in the public eye.
There's a lot of money that people make in this profession.
Bill Parcells always talks about achievement, and at the end
of the day, it's about competition and achievement. That's essentially
what it boils down to. I didn't create enough competition
on the roster for it to want to achieve in

(03:22):
the way it needed to achieve. There's got to be
some stress. There has to be. There has to be
real stress within that locker room, and an uncomfortability that
if I don't play well enough, my ass will not
be on the field playing. That directly falls on my shoulders.
It's a crappy lesson that I've learned. I do a

(03:43):
pretty good job self evaluating. Now. I'm hard headed, and
I will talk myself way back into you know, I
was right, but no, this occurrent. I was wrong. I
was wrong.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Don't get too comfortable, don't get too complacent. That's what
I'm hearing right there, mate.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, I mean, obviously a lots to unpack there. That
was at the beginning of the press conference. I mean,
that topic was consistently brought up throughout the course of
the presser. And you know, Jeffrey, we talked about this
all last summer.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
I mean that was twenty two starters, right, yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
I mean from from twenty twenty three to twenty twenty four,
the Colts returned seventy nine percent of the roster, and
they brought back almost all of their in house free agents.
Last spring, they returned eighty seven percent of the offensive
starters or offensive starts, I should say, and ninety five
percent of their defensive starts. That's the numbers, that's the continuity.

(04:33):
And according to Chris, it didn't work. There wasn't enough competition,
There wasn't enough accountability because guys didn't have to quote
unquote earn jobs. There were too much egos. According to
Chris and DeForest Buckner from last week, everybody wasn't on
edge enough. If you will. Chris said that stress and
competition can be a good thing. There just wasn't enough

(04:54):
of it last year. And we'll talk about this more
throughout the course of the show, but it was evident
the locker room this year wasn't together. There was a
lot of discord, there were some public comments, and the
results showed.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
No ill tell you what him's falling on the sword
like he did, saying hey, this is on me. I'm
gonna tip my hat to Chris Ballard on that. Because
everybody in the NFL world and media saying make changes here,
make changes there. This guy got up in front of
the microphone, started right out of the gate and said, hey,
I was wrong. I need to be better. Here's Chris
Ballard on his evaluation of Anthony Richardson through two seasons,

(05:25):
obviously knowing that the arrow needs to go up.

Speaker 4 (05:27):
I don't think we can completely stamp it. We've seen
some good things. I mean we knew. Look, I like Anthony,
and Anthony's done some really good things. There's been some
potholes too. I think the number one thing. Let me
track back a little bit here. We knew when we
took him it was gonna be a roller coaster. I
don't think I did a very good job. I think
I explained that it's going to take some time. But look,

(05:49):
I got excited too about the talent and the wild plays.
But now we need to consistency down after down. But
the number one thing we have to figure out, and
what Anthony's got to work through, is staying healthy. You've
got to stay He's got to be able to stay healthy. That,
to me is the probably the biggest question right now,
because now we're going on two seasons in a row.

(06:11):
He's dealt with injuries. So that's the first thing. And
then number two, you know, being consistent, getting consistent, you know,
down after down, play after play, consistency with him, and
that just takes that takes time. I wish I had
a magic wand that could waive it and get him
to the to the top of the peak right away,

(06:31):
but that's not realistic. The good news is, even with
the back, which we think will be fine, he's gonna
go into the offseason healthy all right, which last season
he didn't. He was rehabbing a lot. So that's gonna
give him a chance to work on some things going
forward that we think will help going in the next season.
Now saying all that, like, we can't beat our head

(06:52):
against the wall. We've got to have competition at the position,
just for the one, for the fact that competition makes
everybody better. And then two he's not proving in play
seventeen games.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Hey, we're gonna get into that. Believe me, Anthony Richardson's
coming up. But may te real quick, what kind of
competition just I mean, it's early January. What is he
saying when he's talking about competition for Anthony richards.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Well, it's its next offseason. Identifying the best option for
the Colts going forward at the backup quarterback position to
push Anthony richards.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Oh no, no, no, no, I'm sorry, No backup I mean
That's what I'm saying, like, well, that's treasure. I'm getting
that is it's a true competition.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
I think so. And what Chris is alluding to here,
this is the franchise dilemma. Right, He's gotta stay healthy.
That is the biggest question. How do you use him?

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Right?

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Do you have to be careful about running him too
much because of his propensity to get hurt. If you
don't run him, then you take away his strength. So
if you're too overcautious about running him because of fear
of getting hurt, then that hurts the team dramatically, right,
So you've got to get that figured out. I know
injuries are inevitable in the NFL, but seventeen games due
to miss or miss time due to injury, four injuries

(07:58):
all told, through two years, it's just not sustainable. So
this is very much about Anthony Richardson taking it upon himself,
owning the onus to get better and to grow and
to become a more efficient, accurate quarterback.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Absolutely, And when you talk about storylines in the offseason,
he is number one. And we're gonna be bringing you
some stuff here in just a minute. But I want
to get back to Ballard's press conference talking about a
lot of stuff. We're gonna do this over the next
couple of weeks. Here's Chris Ballard and if he has
to change his approach in free agency and outside player
acquisitions this offseason.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
I think we need to continue. We've had moments where
we've brought outside free agency in and done really good
with it. We've got to be better about making sure
we identify the right free agents that can help push
this team to where it needs to go. Right now,
we're not close. I'm gonna make this really clear, like

(08:51):
I'm not gonna weird. Like close is losing on the
last play of the Super Bowl. That's close, going eight
to nine, that's not close. I'm not saying we won't
be closer when we get to the start of the season.
But right now, sitting here today, we're an eight nine
football team. We got to own that, and we are
not good enough. We're not We've got to be able

(09:13):
to address and identify the right avenues to acquire the
right players that can move the needle, and had not
done that in the last four years.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Opposite direction of last year, Matt going into this year,
are we talking about big splash free agency signings. Hey,
there's some big names on the market. Well, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
I mean, Chris wouldn't go there. I mean he I
mean it's January tenth, right. You still have a lot
of evaluation you have to do, and you have to
pore over the free agent class and all of that stuff.
But I do agree with Chris eight and nine. You
got a long way to go. Seven wins this year
against teams under five hundred, only one win against a
team that made the playoffs, a lot of close wins
this year against underwhelming teams. And if you look at

(09:52):
all the other teams in the AFC playoff field, Jeffy,
you're gonna roll your eyes at me on this one
because I say it all the time. They ain't going anywhere.
Chiefs aren't going anywhere, Ravens aren't going anywhere, Chargers, Broncos, Texans,
They're all here to stay. Even the teams that didn't
make the playoffs, like the Bengals and the Dolphins, they're
gonna be good too. I think they're gonna rebound. So
you've got to get better at key areas. And it

(10:13):
starts with, as Chris said, getting better at player acquisition,
how to lure those guys over in free agency, how
to you know close deals, how to recruit players to
come over and help your team, knowing that competition is
good for the roster, and that by bringing in the
right guys, it creates an atmosphere of guys pushing themselves,
pushing each other and holding each other accountable. And again

(10:35):
Chris admitted that the guys that he brought back last
year didn't do that. And again it was evident.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
We'll be breaking down this press conference in this offseason,
and we got some storylines coming up. This is the
last word on ninety three five, one oh seven to
five The Fan. Matt Taylor, I am Jeffrey Gorman. Well
we come back. We're gonna break down the biggest offseason storylines.
Now that this season is done and kaput, we'll talk
about the main areas that need some addressing in the
coming months and what's going on in the Colts locker room.

(11:01):
Improvement at quarterback included changing this defensive scheme. We're gonna
find out coming back with more right after this on
ninety three to five and one oh seven five The Fan.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
We're giving you all you need to know on the Colts.
This is the last Word with Jeffrey Gorman and Matt
Taylor from the Indiana Union Construction Industry radio studio.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
That is rocking. Bob Seeger, the snow has fallen. Matt
Taylor and I are talking Colts football and earlier today
Chris Ballard at his press conference. You can watch that
in its entirety rather on Colts dot Com. Be sure
to check that out. Also, we're brought to you by
our friends at meyer Meyer's, the official supercenter of the
Indianapolis Colts and proud sponsor of hundreds of local sports

(11:42):
teams across the Midwest. May te biggest storylines of the offseason.
Let's get to it. Here's three of them. The culture fix.
The culture fix, we've heard about that. How much do
the behind the scenes issues that came up this last season,
obviously media driven in some people talking over the airwaves
and not you know, getting flamed up and all that.
How much of that is going to be addressed this

(12:04):
offseason as far as like, let's focus on football.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Yeah, I think it was troubling to hear all the
you know, preparation and attention to detail and accountability issues
that were made public this season, and Chris Ballard said
he didn't like that part of it, but that's what happened.
And you know, it started with the benching of Anthony
Richardson because there was a gap and how he was
preparing versus what the expectations were. He was regressing in

(12:27):
terms of poise and comfortability. But it was just disappointing
that there was a gap in preparation and failing to
meet expectations there in the first place. Kenny Moore the
second had remarks about preparation and accountability after a game
this season beforest Buckner, before week eighteen and after Week
eighteen talked about how some of the defensive players needed

(12:47):
more accountability and said that you know, guys played with
egos this year and that it was up and down
this season as far as that is concerned. Listen, the
NFL and really all of life, but certainly professional sports,
it comes down to little things.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Man.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
There's too much parity in this league. The little things
separate the good teams from the great teams. And a
bunch of little things added up to big things this
year for the Indianapolis Colts. And what Chris said earlier today,
man I so agree with It's spot on. You can't
fool the locker room. Man. Everybody in the locker room
knows who's committed and who's not, and who's cutting corners

(13:26):
and things like that, And a lot of this offseason
should be about resetting the standards of what the expectations
are and what you have to do to be great
in the NFL based on all the little things that
were made public this season by the Colts, kind of
airing it out for the fan base to consume.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
Hey, I don't know anything about anything, but mayte, I'm
saying this that locker room's gonna look a little bit
different next.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Absolutely, storylines, that's what we're talking about this offseason. The
quarterback position. Through two seasons, Anthony Richardson completed fifty percent
of his passes fifty point six to be with a
quarterback rating sixty seven point eight. He's starting fifteen of
a possible thirty four games. He's missed nineteen of a
possible thirty four games. Okay, how big of anofs? I mean,

(14:10):
I know that's a loaded question, but oh, like what
can be done differently? Like, how big can we put
this offseason on Anthony richardson shoulders.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
I mean, in one word, enormous. It's year two going
into year three, still a lot of questions about his
ability to, as Chris said, stay healthy, consistently play at
a high level complete intermediate throws. I mean, like you said, simply,
he's missed more games than he's played in two years.
And this year the overall passing numbers took a dip,

(14:37):
and because of NFL rules, like we said, he can't
work out with the team until April. A lot of
this has to be on him. He's got to take
it upon himself to get better, grow, have a plan
to get more accurate, become a more efficient quarterback in
the intermediate passing game, and hopefully his health this offseason
allows him to do that. He wasn't afforded that ability,
you know this time last year, he was still rehabbing. Yeah,

(15:00):
but Chris Ballard said today that he's confident that Anthony
Richardson can improve his accuracy. Well, the reality is that
Richardson has to experience extreme growth in accuracy just to
be you know, in the middle of the pack among
quarterbacks from this past season in terms of accuracy. That's
the reality of it. I mean, that's the cold hard facts,

(15:21):
top truths, right, That's what it is. So you've got
to be able to throw the ball in the NFL
effectively and efficiently. We all know that this offseason has
to be about complimenting the running game, which is really
good with the offensive line and Jonathan Taylor. You've got
to be better in the passing game otherwise as a team,
they're not going to be able to win big like
Chris Ballard wants to.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Hey, Matt, you'll also have to be, you know, good
at stopping the opposition offensively now this offseason, another big storyline,
what's going on defensively? Gus Bradley, great guy love, Gus
Love coach Gus has been not retained if you will
contract us up linebacker coach Richard Smith another great guy
not retain Ron Milis dB coach not retained. So the
defensive scheme this season, the Colts finished in the bottom

(16:02):
ten in total yards, rushing defense, passing defense, and scoring.
They gave up over twenty five points per game in
twenty twenty four this last season, ranking thirtieth in stopping
the third downs. That led to the Colts ranking thirtieth
in defensive time of possession on the field, Matt, how
disappointing was the twenty fourth season for this Colts defense,
and also with Gus Bradley and his crew not coming back.

(16:25):
Does this defensive scheme change a bit because got some
stalwarts on that defense. Can they play in a difference scheme? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (16:31):
I mean in terms of the disappointment, it was incredibly disappointing.
And it goes back to what I said, you know
this time last year and going into the twenty twenty
four season. Way too much talent, or at least I
think there's way too much talent on that side of
the ball to be finishing near the bottom in all
of those major categories that you just laid out. So
did it change in scheme need to take place? I

(16:54):
don't know, probably, But as Buckner alluded to at the
end of the season, the players within the scheme didn't
hold up their end of the bargain, right, They've got
to come together better. Giving up big plays and not
stopping the run for large stretches of the season, not
shutting down the offense's best weapons is what doomed that
unit for for most of the season. But Chris Ballard

(17:15):
said that overall, being more aggressive in the scheme is
probably a good thing. I think you're probably gonna see that,
but to what degree, I don't know. We're gonna see
how that translates into the next defensive coordinator.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Higher so much to come and that hire is going
to be coming up pretty quick. All the information you

Matt Taylor, I'm jeff Ley Gorman, but for a second, well,
Mike Keith, he's my guy, you know. I mean, he's
always gonna be my number one, and I don't even

(18:07):
work for the Titans. Love you about nord Is, Mike

when we come back, we're gonna give you the form
of Credit Union question of the Week regarding the great
season Alec Pierce turned in this season, and we're gonna
close out the show with some playoff tidbits this weekend.
We're gonna bring you in showcase casey value and let's
have some fun Friday night. The snow is falling. This

(18:28):
is the Last Word on ninety three five, one oh
seven five The Fan.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
Welcome back to the Last Word, the offseason Home of
the Colts with Jeffrey Gorman and Matt Taylor from the
Indiana Union Construction Industry Radio Studio.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
Whoa, whoa, I stood up on that one? Did that
is Live led Zeppelin gyrating? Woo wow Live led Zeppelin
getting ready for Friday Night, mayte.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
That changes the whole tune and tenor of the show.
We got in some serious topics in the first two segments.
Let's lighten up a little bit.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
Took my shirt off there for a minute. That was
so dedicated. Hey, this is the last Word ninety three five,
one oh seven five The Fan. Matt Taylor, Voice of
the Goats, I'm Jeffrey Gormet. Time not for the Forum
Credit Union. Question of the week, Alec Pierce, big season?
How about this twenty two point three yards per reception?
Who was the last Colts player to lead the NFL
in yards and catch in a single season? May ta
casey value? By the way we're bringing it, I'm gonna

(19:28):
leave it open to both of you, guys. I think
you both know the answer. But my point is this.
No one's gonna get this, guys, no one, Well, thanks,
no one.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
I'll just say Marvin Harrison, No, that's.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
Pretty good guests, Though, pretty good guests showcase. How are you,
t Y Hilton, t Y Hilton? Another great guest? No,
that was Roger Carr nineteen seventy six, twenty five point
ninety perky. No, My point is this twenty almost twenty
six yards of catch? What did they just air it
out every time? Roger? Like, go date Rodge? Go every time?
Go dep Rodge.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
How about that?

Speaker 4 (19:58):
Though?

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Alec Pierce the first play in the NFL to average
over twenty one yards catch, he's actually over twenty two,
but first guy to do over twenty one since twenty ten.
Hell of a season, Hell of a growth from year
two to year three and Chris not to you know,
hijack the show, Jeffrey. But but Chris alluded to it
in the press conference today. It's about competition.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
You know.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
You draft ad Mitchell Light of Fire under Alec Pierce
and he just turned in the best year of his career.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
Went into Chris Ballard's offices. What does what does this
mean for me? Was playing big Fellah, there's nothing, just
go ball out, and that's exactly what he did. Visit

(20:47):
want for you. To make it quick. I want one winner,
like one win, like one game. One winner. That's all
you have to do. Tell me who's gonna win the game,
because I'm calling you out next week.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
If you're wrong, all right for me, I'll start. I'm
gonna I'm gonna say my definitive winner. This weekend, I'm
taking a road team Chargers at the Texans. The Chargers
Beatt Houston. They're not playing good football right now. They're
limping into the playoffs. And how about this. C. J.
Stroud was zero to two against Jim Harball and the

(21:16):
Michigan Ohio state rivalry, and that that losing street continues
to stay.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
Will be championshipwcase.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
Thanks for giving me the low hanging fruit. I'm gonna
say the definite win is the Bills. I don't see
bo Nicks traveling across country going to New York where
it's probably gonna be snowing. I think Josh Allen and
that Bills team they're on a crash course towards at
least the AFC Championship game and maybe the Super Bowls.
Take the Bills.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Watch us lock it in, folks, lock it and watch
us another road team. I got the Pack going in
the Philly and upsetting the Eagles, and Nick Sia.

Speaker 5 (21:49):
Jalen Hurts did clear concussion protocol, so he will play
there you go.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
Don't forget Monday night Vikings and Rams. Sorry about that case.
Vikings and Rams moved to Arizona, but we will have
a Monday night playoff football game. That's gonna be fun.
Mayte it is fired up Friday, Let's get this thing rolling.
What's on your mind?

Speaker 3 (22:06):
Yeah, the first fired up Friday of the offseason. I'm
I'm excited to just watch football. You know, we had
the college football playoffs all weekend, then the NFL playoffs,
you know, up until Monday night. I'm just excited to
you know, chill at home, crack open a beverage and
watching football. And reaquaint myself with my children.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
I liked text during football games sometimes with my old
buddy Matt Taylor, you and I. Last night, I said,
you know what I just said, simply good for Penn
State for showing up and making this a hell of
a football game. I good for penning the game. Didn't
want a big game. I know that's true. I'm saying
good for them. By the way, there's four minutes left
in the game when I sent that text. So I'm like,
good for Penn State showing up, and Matt simply replies,

(22:44):
I love football. I do simply good thing right, absolutely
all right. One of my favorites is here in studio
where the showcase casey Value, what's got you fired up?
On this Friday showcase?

Speaker 5 (22:55):
So similar to Matt, I want to watch football, but
also the reacquainting with the kids, that is, it is
something I'm excited for. Both my boys have their first
reck basketball games. My youngest first time he's playing basketball.
That'll be Saturday morning. Will be fun for me watching
some first grade in preschool basketball.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
You gotta keep shooting, kids, that's all right. Every every
time no no, no, no, no no no.

Speaker 6 (23:18):
Every time you touch you put it up. Yes, be
the black hole, bro. It goes in, it's not coming out.
That's what I would tell my kid if I had one. Hey,
you touch leather, you you hoike it off?

Speaker 2 (23:30):
Can you imagine me and Jeffreys Cat, I'd be batt Matt.
