Speaker 1 (00:02):
Jordan and Jake. You're good. I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Ready to go the home stops.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
He throws at a crossfield. Guess who, George Gross, here
are your panther Hall of Honor remembers Jordan Gross and
Jake Delome.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Jake, it's week five of the Jordan Jake Podcast. Uh,
a little bit of that. We had to shovel our
day around. Jake, you had something going on yesterday, So
recording on Thursday with I like, we moved a Wednesday
to record this this season. Thursday's nice. I appreciate you
moving it because you get a little bit more info
on the injury reports and whatnot. So I have to
(00:42):
say thank you for the movement today. Hopefully everything's good
with you, buddy.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Everything's great. Just had something that I needed to do.
But I'm like, you you get to kind of an
idea what the injury situation looks like, who practiced and
you just you try to decipher what's real, and uh, well,
what's real? Let me just leave it at that. You know,
excuse me? On the injury report?
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Are you suggesting that there's fallacies on the NFL injury reports? Jake?
Is that what you're suggesting.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
I'm not suggesting that, but I do know that's something
that we looked at every week. And if we knew
someone had an ankle or especially a hamstring, a dB
or a safety with a hamstring, yeah, we're like throwing
deep on this human being early and often we were
making him stress it out.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
I used to watch it was the best. Like let's
say we were playing Let's say we're playing long ago
the Buccaneers, and I had to go against Simeon Rice, right,
an old name, but a great player, And like, if
Simeon Rice was on the injury report ankle and then
it said doubtful, I was like, oh, yes, this is outstanding.
And so you're trying to play it cool. You're still
(01:51):
like watching film on Simeon Rice. But then you're watching
the backups and the whole time you're just like, come on, man.
And then Thursday, come out out practice doubtful and you're like, yes,
all right, here we go one more day, you know
what I mean. Then Thursday, then Friday practiced questionable. Ah gosh.
(02:11):
You know, you're playing these head games with yourself because
in the NFL, there's usually a significant drop off from
starter to backup because if you're that good, you'd be
a starter somewhere else. Then you get to Friday or
Saturday and you don't know, you're all playing, you're prepping
for the game, and then you find like, all nonchalant,
I'm trying to play it cool. Hey, we got the
(02:33):
inactives for the game. You look down there like Sime
and Rice active doah? Got it? You know? So then
you got like, so you got to play these mind
games with yourself. It's so funny in the NFL, because
for you it's yeah, it's who are we gonna throw at?
What safety is going to be better? For me, it's like,
who do I got to get in a fight with today? Okay,
all right, I got the I got the I got
(02:53):
the main guy. All right, I can do this. Let's roll.
But now you're you're right, Jake. And then like for
the world of betting, now the injury reports are like
even a more giant deal or fantasy football or all that.
It's just crazy, man, how these all the levels that
go into the week. But I didn't plan on talking
about that. But that's that's you're right, man. Each day matters, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Each day matters. And you know you talked about Simeon,
and you start to think that I'm starting to get
cole sweats here thinking about him.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Just like.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
You said, I'll get to go against a backup. But
the drop off between a superstar and some regular guy
sometimes it's so extreme, and I can only imagine for
somebody like you, it's not like, okay, it do's a
great corner, and Okay, we're not gonna challenge him much,
or there'll be a few plays. You're going against him
between sixty to seventy five snaps every single play. That's
(03:50):
a that's a big difference.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
It is a big difference. But hey, that's why they
pay you the big bucks. Jake, have you ever heard that.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Saying her there, Yes, sir, I have.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
I got I tell you, I got a question for you.
You you drive around in a pickup truck. That's your
method of transportation? Correct?
Speaker 1 (04:07):
That would be correct.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
So today this is a complete side story, but I'm
just going to tell you because you're my friend. So
to this morning, we had a do a little car shuffle.
Had to drop my wife's big Yukon off with the
oil change, get the tires rotated, whatnot. So she's driving
she's driving my truck. I have a truck, GMC truck.
I think that's my you have these days? No, I
(04:31):
have a ford, okay, whatever, we got our truck. I
keep my truck like picked up but not spotless, okay, right,
Like there's some stuff in the console, maybe a Gator
read bottle in the back, you know, and I wash it,
I vacuum in, but it's not spotless. You know. I
do a lot of hauling around of stuff for the
(04:52):
football team and whatnot. So my wife's comment after she
drove my truck because I dropped her car off for
we had to switch, you know, her comment was, it
smells like old pizza and coffee in your truck, Jake,
And I just thought, you know what, I don't know
if that's an act the thing I should be real
proud of.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah, Jordan, I think you should be, you know. And
I think Dana's being a little hard on you. I
think to me, I thought she was going to say, like,
you know, like old sweaty sock or something like that,
that that that locker room smell. That no matter how
clean a locker room is, especially a high school locker room.
I think anybody, you know, the millions of listeners that
we have for this podcast. You know, they played a sport.
(05:34):
They're going back to high school right now. They're thinking
of that smell in the locker room. I mean, it's
just something about it. And I mean, look, you're a
football coach, you know, but I.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Smell like old pizza and coffee. Evidently, Jake and I
just felt like, all right, that's where I'm at in life,
that that's what the scent that I carry around is
is old pizza and coffee. So I just felt like
that was I don't know, man, I need to get
I need to get a little air freshener in there.
Remember the trees you hang from the day when you
were younger and you peel that plastic off a little
(06:03):
bit at the time. I don't know, Jam you you
got to watch the Bengals game. Andy Dalton did not
get the win against his old team, lost by ten
some highs and lows. We lost, Shack. Let me get
your recap, Bud.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Yeah, Litles, I'm gonna hit the injuries first. That that's hard,
you know. I know, Luke and I it was like
a gut punch when we saw Shap on the ground
and we kind of watched. We could see it on
the video pretty clearly that you know, you just kind
of know some injuries and it's like it's not good.
And Luke just looked at me and I never played
(06:40):
with Shaq, but I just love him. I know what
type of person and leader he is. And Luke looked
at me, and I swear it's like tears in his eyes.
He just shook his head and he clinched his jaw
and he was just like, no, no, you know, it's
just it's hard, you know when you see something like that,
and then Josie goes out with what growing hamstring ish
type of injury. So yeah, Jordan, I think the biggest
(07:03):
thing we look at it is that we're gonna have
young guys and you know what, They're gonna have opportunities
and they can step up and that's how some guys
can make a name for themselves. And you know Wallace
young linebacker we drafted out of Kentucky who had a
great three season, He's gonna have an opportunity and he's
gonna have an extended opportunity to play, and that's what
you want, and you're gonna learn. Will there be mistakes?
(07:24):
Oh yeah, absolutely, they'll be mistakes, but make him at
full speed. You want to be a heat seeking missile.
And so that's just the way it goes. And we've
had some injuries. The injury bug has business, but nobody's
gonna come to save us. And the one thing I
will say, I really like what we're doing offensively, Jordan.
I think we I think it's been pretty impressive to
watch Adam feeling out who was gonna step up. I thought, uh,
(07:47):
Xavier ly Get had some good moments last week. He
really did. He had a couple of rookie moments. He
had a couple of drop passes that he knows he
should have caught. And we interviewed him in our player
interview after the game and he addressed that, and he
addressed what he does at practice and how he watches
Deontay's releases and Adam Deelen's details, and so I think
that's always just such a positive. A young kid that
(08:10):
wants to get better. You know, Mingo's gonna have more opportunities.
You know Deontay. Deontay is a good player, and we're
trying to get him the ball. I think coach Canal
has said that yesterday and this presser, and and we
should And there was a moment last weekend where Deontaey
almost came up with a touchdown catching the open and drive,
which would have been huge because we turned it over
(08:31):
on downs and then we had another one down the field.
Would have been a tough catch, but that's one we've
seen him make. It would have been down the field.
So offensively, we're doing some good things. Cuba Hubbard, you know,
offensive line in Cuba. I just can't say enough. Tuba's
breaking tackles, running through people, running down hell offensive line,
Taylor Modeen, Robert Hunt, what a great sign, you know,
(08:53):
Austin Corbett manning up inside. I thought Zavala. I thought
Chandler had a really good game. He had a rough
year last years and a lot of games didn't go
his way, but I thought he played particularly well with
the ikey the other day. So proud of what we're
doing up front. Love what and he's doing at the
quarterback position. He's slinging and he's letting it go and
really and truly taking care of the ball. The one interception,
(09:16):
his arm got hit and we were making it taking
a shot down the field. It's just unfortunate that happened.
But George, we had opportunities man miss tackles. We can
talk about that. We had miss tackles on the Jamar
Chase long touchdown pass that should have never happened. And
another time right before the half, we could have tackled
Moss and the time would have run out. It was
(09:37):
really bad clock managing by Cincinnati and we missed the
tackle and they scored. So we had opportunities. We knew
it was a good offense. They showed they're a good offense.
Joe Burrow was in control, did very well. The receivers
are excellent. But I like what we're doing offensively and
we'll see if we can build on it this week.
But defensively it's it's gonna be an opportunity for people
(09:59):
to step up guard. That's no doubt.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Talk about that last play though, to Moss, he's like
there was two one.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
Second left, six six six, No swing pass to.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Him out there in the flat. Like you said, no timeouts.
It's either score or nothing. You said, cork block management.
But they did score. Yeah, I'm always looking at that
kind of stuff, like as a head coach man. So
you're you would have you're saying they needed to take
a shot in the end zone. It's either incomplete a
touchdown or in the clock stops.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
That's just that's my opinion, Jordan. And to me, you
got to take a quick shot, slant fade, whatever it
may be, get it up and down to make sure
you get three because you're getting the ball to start
the second half, so at minimum you want to at
least get three knowing you're gonna get the ball. That
could be a ten point swing. And you know, I
was surprised Joe threw the swing route, and to be honest,
(10:52):
it was it wasn't that accurate of a swing pass.
And and got to get most credit. He actually almost
tripped a little bit, but and we couldn't get him
down and he was able to cross the goal line
and score. So that's something that I just I'm such
a big believer in points, Jordan, the whole analytic world.
I get it. I'm just uncertain sometimes in regards to
(11:14):
early in the game, like get three points. Man, I
just I don't know. To me, that's always something that
you know and go back to us. The first drive
of the game, we drive right down the field, pass play, pass,
play run, run, pass, and then we couldn't punch it in,
and that's you know, you want to get something. And
that's a win for Cincinnati in that regard because they
(11:35):
stopped this and they got the ball back. But you
know it was we wanted to be aggressive and I
get that part of it too. But man, points are
hard to come by in the NFL, and I think
that'll go into this week. Points are gonna be tough
to come by. This team is led by their defense
and they average about eighteen points a game. They like
to turn the ball over Chicago, so points.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Are always a premium before we move on to the
next game. This was the Legends weekend game. You know,
there was some more hooplah for Julius. I'm sick. I'm
sick of talking about him, all right, we know, Okay,
we're moving on from him, all right, whatever, Julius, You're awesome.
But the Legends Weekend that's something I gotta say, just
(12:16):
a huge thank you and Ada boy to David and
Nicole Tepper and just the Panthers organization. Man, they they
they spared no expense taking care of the former players,
inviting him back with guests and their families and a
bunch of events. Jake were able to get involved in
much of the stuff over the weekend.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Well, that's the disappointing thing for me, Jordan. My blight
got pushed back due to the hurricane and things of
that nature, so I didn't get in until later Saturday evening,
so I missed the event on Saturday night. So that
was disappointing. But certainly bigger things, you know what the
mountains of North Carolina in that region with Hurricane Helene.
(12:56):
And this is just my you know, public service announcement.
If anybody can spare anything, and certainly the people that
are listening are probably affected, but if we have people
that are listening from away, anything you can do. It's
just the devastation that occurred in that state, in western Tennessee.
It's you know all should I say Eastern Tennessee and
western North Carolina. It's just it's heartbreaking to see.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
To be quite honest, Well, I've got friends that are
the family and places up there, and yeah, Jake, it's
co sign all of that stuff. Man, It's just crazy
how that those weather paths. I mean, you deal with
it all the time where I live. It's nothing on
our radar that kind of stuff, but how that stuff
can move in and out and just nature has got
(13:40):
its own agenda, man. And the stories I'm hearing, yeah,
very very very sad and challenging and all that stuff.
So yeah, co sign what you're saying there. But no,
I just I did want to say thank you to
the ownership and all that because I wasn't able to
go either because of my high school team. But I
know the guys talked to a bunch of guys that
were there and just a great, a great thing. And
(14:02):
I think, you know, there's not like a financial return
on investing in the former players, but I think it's
just a part of a well run organization to do
that and let those guys feel welcome. Jake, So I
know you got to see some of those guys, and
I just thought it was worth mentioning how cool I
think that is.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Yeah, No, Jordan, they do a great job. I last year.
I was able to participate a great amount last year,
and I just think I'll echo what you said. They
don't have to do that, and Jeremy Kelly and that
bunch and David Nicole and and listen, I'm gonna piggyback
back again on the efforts. You know, David Nicole donated
three million. In my opinion, that spurred some of the
other owners to donate substantial money to the hurricane relief effort.
(14:41):
And you know, that was a nice moment during the
game Sunday. I don't know if it was talked about.
That was announced during the game, and I watched the
fans stand up and cheer Dave and I know where
Dave Box is at, and you can see a lot
of them in front of it standing up, cheering and
thanking and for doing that, you know, that's you know,
you can't, you can't. That's just fantastic that they did that.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Well, those guys get a lot of heat just you know,
taking on a new organization and getting the program running
and winning and all that stuff. So I'm glad to
hear that they were treated that way with that announcement. Jake,
let's talk about the Bears, man. He said, we got
a pretty good old line. I agree. I'm excited about
that unit. It seems like it's been in turmoil, maybe
(15:25):
not turmoil, but just missing a piece or two and
injuries for I mean years, Jake, as long as you
and I have been doing this show, so to see
that unit kind of come together those offseason acquisitions. Robert Hunt,
I just love watching him. I love I love his interviews.
He's just an exciting player going into Chicago. Man, let's
(15:46):
lean on those guys. They got a rookie quarterback, they've
got a good defense. DeAndre Swift is having a heck
of a start to this season. Jake, what do you see?
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Well, I think the biggest thing, I'm still not sure
what they are offensively, and I don't think they know
what they are just yet. Young kid who's uber talented.
On talent, I mean, Caleb Williams can really throw the
football and it's talented. Now does he not see it sometimes?
And he's a little hesitant every now and then. Yeah,
I'll venture to say that. But he played a lot
(16:15):
more in my opinion under control last week. Took the
check down when it was there, made a good pass
to DJ Moore in the back of the end zone
for a touchdown. But he just he played a little more.
He didn't try to make too much happen, and they
ran the football. They were getting some heat and not
running DeAndre Swift, but they ran it. He did well
on the screen game last week. So offensively, I think
(16:39):
they're still finding their identity. Defensively that they're gonna be
a challenge. They're they're a ball hawking unit. Brisker the
safety's he wants to get after, you know, sweat the
defensive end. Signed a big contract, led two teams in
sacks last year. They'll probably go down in history in
the NFL to lead two teams in sacks. Edwards a big, tall,
(16:59):
range g middle linebacker Jalen Johnson, corner Kevin bayardof had
another safety. So they've got some players on defense. They
play aggressive, they're not overly complicated on defense. It's more
of a in my opinion, you can kind of know
what you're gonna get. They try to disguise late, but
they play fast and they play with the purpose, and
(17:20):
there's something to be said about teams like that. They
try to punch the ball out, probably due to peanut
tillmout uh and then the in the peanut punch that's
such a prevalent thing in Chicago. And so yeah, we're
gonna have a challenge. I don't in my opinion, I
don't think it's the same offense as we faced last
week that was extremely potent with T. Higgins and U
(17:43):
Joe Burrow and Jamaar Chase and that bunch. But uh,
nonetheless a team that you know they can give us problems,
and so looking forward to hopefully running the football, taking
opportunities in the past game and uh, maybe get a
turnover to it's still a rookie quarterback and they they're
still trying to find their way, so maybe you had
a turnover too. Biggest thing for us is that there's
(18:04):
got to be a pass rush generated at some point.
Didn't have a whole lot of pass rush last week.
The one time we gave Burrow some fits on a
pass rush, Clowney almost got him down. We ended up
getting a pick on the play. So pass rush generates problems,
and so hopefully we can maybe establish one this weekend.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Do you have any memories of playing in Chicago, Jake
that are favorable?
Speaker 1 (18:26):
Yeah, Jordan, I have certainly the playoff game, Jordan, when
me beat him in January of gosh two thousand and six,
two months after we got beat and I got say
sacked eight times in November.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
That Yeah, thanks for bringing it up.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
I was you if you'd let me finish. A lot
of it was due to me. I probably held the
ball on too long.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
Oh yeah, that's right, that's right, Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
But to go and beat the number one seed, number
one defense and all that. Steve Smith finally decided to
show up. You know, we had trouble getting him to
show up weekly, but he decided he want to play
that day and he took he He made Soldier feel
his own museum ride, especially his own U theme park
ride whenever he jumped up on the goal post and
(19:09):
it's what second or third touchdown and slid down. So
I have great memories. That was an unbelievable game. And
to just to go back to the hush over that
stadium in the locker room and plane ride back and
bush ride, Yeah, that was a good day.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
I just remember how cool it is in the playoffs
that you're at Soldier Field in January.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
And it was great.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
It was looked cold, and I'm like, this is so
cool to win, you know, especially to win.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
And in my mind I can hear the NFL voice,
the guy's voice byd the NFL films. You know, it's
a cold and blistery day. I could just I mean
you think about all that. I think my favorite part
of that game, Jordan, is whenever we were kneeling it
out to win the game, Stevensiblind and Tommy Harris jumped
over and cheap shot at me. Maybe because I'm out
of been you know, blow fired up and you were.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Talking, you were flapping the guns.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Well they were they they flat the whole time. And
if you want to give it, if you want to
you can't take it. I'm gonna give it. So it
is you sure.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Are I just remember laughing at you that game, man,
that was awesome. Well, hey, are you going to the
Is this on your yes? Sir?
Speaker 1 (20:21):
I will be flying out of New Orleans on Saturday
morning and uh looking forward to it. Archam Padre, Luke
Keikley will be there. And Luke has a new assignment
this week. He is going to be calling a college
football game on television.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
Really what game?
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Uh the U Mass Northern Illinois. So he is going
to be like an hour from Chicago, so it works
out perfectly. And so he will be calling that game
in the early afternoon and will be driving over or
knowing Luke, He's probably have a private helicopter, you know,
just flying.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
He's like time, Yes, multiple games, all these gigs out.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Well, I mean, you know I tried that and they said, well, Jake,
we can't put subtitles for the right for a broadcast.
So you know, they just kicked me out.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
But yeah, you have to be a listener to be
able to understand Jake delone exactly. So do a show. No, hey,
they should put a show together that's Xavier Legette and you.
That would be awesome.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Yeah, it'd be awesome, man, I'm promise you I can.
I could know every single word he's saying. There's nothing
wrong with that. He speaks beautiful, beautiful English to my ear,
yes he does. Yeah, so I'm gonna be hard on
Luke this weekend if he has any mistakes. You know,
I'm like, hey, buddy, we need it wasn't ready. Yeah,
we need to study a little more.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
You know, I agree? I agree. Well, hey, just you
didn't ask, but I'm going to tell you right now
my team's five and oh going for six and oh
tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Just I don't know if you knew this or not,
but I think you won your last week's game sixty
something to fourteen. Is that correct?
Speaker 2 (21:57):
Sixty one thirteen.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Oh yeah, Darren, you know the long haired old guy who, Yeah,
that's the old guy, right, he did.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
I showed my team they were fired up. As the
guys we made page three of asked the old guys
on old guy on Panthers dot com. Here it is.
They're fired up. So we'll see, we'll see what we do.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
But what do we have this week with the Grizzlies?
Speaker 2 (22:24):
Hey, pirates? Okay, right down the road, like a mile away.
It should be a good game. I got hey, I
got some fun stuff happening. My I got a junior
left tackle that's starting to get hot in the recruiting cycle.
Just got offered by University of Washington.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Oh wow, so that that was boys e two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
And then yeah yeah, yeah, so that's fun for our guys.
You know, hey, momentum, let's keep it going.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
What about the Utah.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
I'm trying to get him to call him, and they're like, well,
we're gonna eavel and blah blah blah, and they're taking
their time, and I'm like, guys, let's do this. You
know what are we doing here? They're getting ready to
get ready.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
Also, we'll make your secretary, call and say I'm Jordan
Gross's secretary, and.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Well that's me. I'm my own secretary or you you're
my secretary. Yeah, all right, we'll have fun is Chicago
with Luke.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Yeah, well we'll do, buddy. We'll try to we'll try
to carry him through, givehim a niche. You know they
struggle and you know they don't prepare them, but look,
it is what it is. It's something that.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Everybody's stayed from the same cloth that you were cut from, Jake.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Okay, it's unbelievable, buddy, unbelievable dealing.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Bye.
