Speaker 1 (00:03):
No to Brett McMillan with the Panthers postgame show preseming
by Southern Star Unofficial Burman of the Carolina Panthers celebrate
the spirit up in Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Hey, Panther's got a touchdown. I haven't say one of
those since before Christmas?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Right, that's right?
Speaker 2 (00:27):
How about that? You know, So there's some things to
feel good about if the Panthers leave the stadium to night,
despite the fact they fell to the New York Jets
in this game. And I don't quite understand that it's
the preseason. There are a lot of things I don't understand,
and one of them is that they don't want to
go for the extra point. But that's okay. There are
some things that the Panthers I think feel better about
after last week's game, guys, But there are also some
(00:49):
things I think that they need to work on. And
I thought one of the things they took a step
back on this week was at the special teams Mike
and you, James.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Yeah, I would agree with that.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
You know, there were a couple of plays that you know,
in the regular season you're gonna want to see cleaned up,
and a bunch of field.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Goals in this game though, Yes, this was like a
kicking exhibit exhibition.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
It is.
Speaker 6 (01:09):
And when you're doing the coverage game, you got to
make sure you keep people in check and push back
inside and so when anybody gets outside of you, that's
not good at all.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
Well, and then and then with the new kicking rules,
with the you know, kicking short of the kicking box,
I mean that's like kicking out of bounds now exactly.
Speaker 6 (01:26):
Get and so as they as the players kind of
move forward, they'll they'll get a custom and get used to,
you know, especially the new kicking rules. And because it's
it's new for everyone, because don't forget, we had a
forty five fifty yard head start running down now and
to maneuver, and now that's taken away, and so things
are going to have to get adjusted a little bit.
(01:47):
But I think one thing it does, I think it
does make the game a little bit safer. Yeah, you know,
because you don't have the high collisions. I can remember
people getting almost like the capitated, coming running down with
flying elbows, you know, getting hitting the and and right
now you don't you don't really have that. And I
still think it can be exciting too, because all it
takes is one guy to make somebody miss and you
(02:10):
off to the races.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
And we had a good discussion before the fourth quarter,
Eugenie and I about how the you know, the front
line on the on the kickoff return is going back
about ten yards and then moving forward. And that's so
that the return team can figure out what the defense
trying to do exactly.
Speaker 6 (02:27):
Because as a defense and the kicking team, if you're
doing stunts, if you're stagnant and a stunt happens in
front of you, you better be great on your feet
to get and pick it up.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I know you'll be flat footed.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
But when you start to run and give yourself some
room by running back, you got a chance to go
ahead and see what's developing for stunts or so and
what manage You're gonna go ahead and block, and so
that's what you really want to do. You're gonna engage
and then you're only gonna hold your block for just on,
you know, just a little bit, and you ain't gonna
hold it because it's not you're gonna be holding. So
you know, it's up to the runner to make a
(02:59):
good decision to make people missing, to get the field.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
And it has the potential.
Speaker 5 (03:03):
I think if you can open a good enough hole,
I mean you could see some and we saw that
with the Jets return. I mean yeah, and get a
little bit of a crease and you might be able
to get a you know, sixty yard return exactly.
Speaker 6 (03:13):
Because don't forget everybody's on a line and they're really
close in the in the opposing teams in red zone area,
if you will, and don't forget you on the line.
So when the when the runner makes a move, he
is making a move on everyone. So because at the
same level, what happens is you want to have different
levels so that people can get incompensate for people. But
(03:36):
that's not happening right now. You see everybody on the
same single line. And if I make you miss, I
made you missed, you miss you missed, And all I
need is a crease.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
If you get a crease, somebody's going to hit a
home run.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
It's a learning process right now, and you're seeing a
lot of different strategies and I think you know, you
saw the Jets right before the end of the first
half went ahead and just booted it out of the
back of the end zone, which means you start at
the thirty instead of the twenty. Then you saw the
mistake that Piniro made where he's trying to kind of
pooch it into.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
The into the zone that zone area.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Which if you if it's fair, well, if it's fair
caught in that zone, then that's where the Jets start
with the ball.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
But if it doesn't make it to the zone, doesn't.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Make it to the zone. Thing they started the forty years.
So yeah, that's it's a learning process and you're seeing
a lot of different strategies. I know that that mortal
kick that you used to be able to do, that's
window and that's what the NFL is trying to get
away from. I know that we all watched the NFL
gave media opportunity to kind of see what was behind
what they're the thinking behind the scenes. And one of
(04:40):
the things they were saying is what they had last year.
They were like eighty three percent or something like that
of kickoffs were not returned, and so they're tried to
make the game safer to your point, Eugena, the kick return,
but also bring the kick return back into the ball
game exactly.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
And don't forget guys like back in the day you
got hester mel Gray.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Washington.
Speaker 6 (05:05):
The kick was a huge deal because now you're planning
for that stuff. A special team's specially a special teams
coach rest He tell me when I played for Seattle,
he was drawing up some great plays to go ahead
for a kickoff return and that was a that was
a legitimate play. And now you're right, they're trying to
(05:26):
bring it back because it was phase out because everybody's
kicking the ball in the end zone. That makes you
start the twenty five yard line. Well guess what now
with the new rules a little bit, it brings it
back into play.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
They were saying, Yeah, if I was saying, you know,
if you could figure out how to do it, maybe
the ideal kickoff would be to have it bounce at
the one yard line and then roll through the end
zone and at the back of the end zone, which
then means the other the opponent doesn't return the kick
and it starts at the twenty yard line instead of
the thirty, which would almost be the ideal kick if
you can figure out how to do that.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
And what about punting the ball?
Speaker 6 (05:59):
I mean, I think that you can actually go ahead
and pump the ball and have Hecker be a little
bit much more accurate with the ball going into that
z yeah, and in that zone area.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah, well that's a good point.
Speaker 7 (06:14):
Ye.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
I wouldn't be surprised if you saw seeing if people pumped.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
The ball and then rugby style, if you kick it
through the uprights you get a point or something that.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
A free kick.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
No, yeah, let's break Australian rules football. Adama hat and
white jacket. He's got the motion down.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
You can't see that.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
There's a lot to break down today. And then did
I thought special teams was an area that the pantherskind
took a step backwards today. I thought, you know, and
we'll talk about this, that the Plumber looked a lot
better today than he did against New England. And I
think that's part of that is confidence. We could talk
about his play today. I thought it looked a lot better. Again,
we did not see the first team at all, and
(07:01):
so that's something we're going to talk about. And I
know how you feel about this, Eugene from last week.
We'll see how you feel about should we see them
against Buffalo next week? So we got a lot of
coming your way.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
I know the answers.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Yes, yeah, I think we know the answer, but we're
going to talk about that before we take a break.
We're gonna get ten seconds pause for ro station identification
of the Carolina Panthers radio network. All right, still ahead,
We'll go over the scoreboard, everything else going on in
the National Football League today. Also some highlights from today's game,
and get the final thoughts from the booth and here
from the head coach as well. You're listening to the
Carolina Panthers Radio network. Hey, welcome back to the path.
(07:39):
This postgame show precented by Southern Star and official Burbon
of the Carolina Panthers, celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas.
Panthers fall to the Jets fifteen to twelve. But the
Panthers did get into the end zone on the last
play off regulation running play covered two yards and mister Johnson,
Dylan Johnson get into the end zone and uh, because
(08:02):
it was on the last play of the game and
it's the exhibition season at that point, the officials said,
that's it. We're good. Extra point we attempted. Uh, So
that took care of it. But the Jets five field
goals the Panthers two field goals and a touchdown in
the ball game.
Speaker 5 (08:18):
If we're doing new rules, I think if you score
a touchdown that should trump field goals.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
It is, but you know what I can think about
what the justice saying that they were they were in
the red zone or in that area where they should
have become. Yeah, so when they look when you talk
about five field goals, they're not thinking of five field goals.
They's like, we missed three opportunities from maybe touchdowns, right, yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Oh absolutely. And we'll talk about the Panthers defense because
you know, they did a lot of bending, but not
very much great over the course of the day. Let's
drive around the league, brought to you by Honda Deals,
Honda Dealers of the Carolinas and Mike Would. A lot
of action around the league, a lot of action going on.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
We got Miami right now on top of Washington thirteen
to six, so that's at the two warning. Also fourth
quarter Jacksonville thirteen to seven over Tampa Bay. Some finals
from earlier, Philadelphia over New England fourteen thirty. That was
a close game up there in New England. Baltimore at
home beats Atlanta thirteen to twelve, Chicago twenty seven to
(09:17):
three over Cincinnati in that game, and Williams for the
Bears six of thirteen seventy five yards. Those they got
their kind of a look at him.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Today.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
Houston over the New York Giants twenty eight to ten.
Kansas City at home loses to Detroit. That was that
game was on later this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
And I hold up, was Patrick Mahomes playing.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
After Holmes in that game? Yes he was, Yes, he did,
Yes he did. He played in that game twenty four
to twenty three the Tiger Tigers. I have to I
was working baseball earlier day and the charlot As were
playing the Toledo mud Heens at the Detroit Tigers. So
that's that's where that little slip this late happens. But
Cleveland loses at home to Minnesota twenty seven to twelve.
(09:56):
And of course in our game it was the Jets
fifteen and the Panthers twelve.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
But you know, I tell you, the Jets kept getting
into the red zone. The Jets had plenty of opportunities.
I mean, you look at their scoring drives, and because
of the opportunities they had, you know, on some really
special teams, mistakes by the Panthers or some special teams.
You know, not necessarily, but some great special teams plays.
(10:22):
I mean, look at their scoring drives. You know, their
second field goal five plays twelve yards. You know their
their third field goal seven plays twenty five yards. You
know their fourth field goal seven plays forty yards. These
are not huge drives that they were getting, and yet
the Panthers were able to clamp down. I mean, the
(10:45):
one wild drive they had was their first scoring drive,
which is in the second quarter, seventeen plays forty nine
yards and it took over eight forty off the clock.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
You know, it hits to nothing. I mean, they had
one hundred and seventeen yards rushing the justine. But it
just it felt, or it seemed like to me as
if the defensive line was getting pushed back into the linebackers.
It felt like that they were picking up first downs
like in abundance. It just felt that way because they
(11:15):
were winning that ground game. That's something that we have
to be able to go in and stop. And I
thought last week we were better at it. I thought
this week we were a little bit more poorous. I
saw some double team blocks on the tackles going off
to the linebackers where they're picking up the linebackers. Where
now the cutback run for the Jets, or that or
(11:36):
that zone stretch run from the Zets. It was working.
So from next standpoint, one hundred and seventeen yards felt
like to me, just to me, one hundred and fifty yards.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
It just felt that way.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
But it also looked on the other side, it looked
like the secondary for the Panthers did a pretty good job.
Richardson has that interception. There were a couple of passes
broken up, So I thought, maybe we're the rushing side.
Maybe it was a little deficient.
Speaker 6 (11:59):
I thought the I thought, I thought that this is
the second week the secondary that we've been talking about
the secondary with the secondary, uh showed up.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
And here's what I like about it.
Speaker 6 (12:10):
Because there's so many question marks coming into this season
about the secondary. You know j C is Jason's gonna
be healthy. You lose Dante Jackson, you know Chen's gone.
You lose some significant players there, right was von Bell,
So you lose some significant players there. And what I've
(12:30):
seen and with this secondary, with these backups, I see tenacity,
I see getting to the ball with some aggressitives. I
see some good tackling I see some PBUs pass breakups.
We saw an interception in today. There's a lot of
things to be encouraged about. The secondary. Jackson comes to
mind when you know, he looks kind of long and link.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
A little bit ranging.
Speaker 6 (12:52):
I thought there was some really good players in the
secondary that you can build upon. So the secondary, in
my opinion, gets an A, not an A plus. But
that's the surprising group that's doing well.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
And they see opportunity, I mean, they see the yes
they do to get on the field.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Right yeah. So, and I thought, you know, they're that
long drive. It was interesting. I thought, how many third
down seas the Jets convert to be out there? Eight
forty four? And I look back, it's like one third
and nine, a fourth and one and a third and two.
I mean, how did the Jets take eight forty four
off the clock when they weren't converting that They only
had They faced four third downs, converted two of them
(13:29):
and a fourth down, and then got stopped on the
third ten and settled for a field goal. I mean
it was so. I mean, you know, the Panthers withstood
a lot during the course of this ball game, and
it forced the Jets into field goal situations when it
would have been pretty easy for the Jets, you think
to wear them down because the time of possession was
it was a lot more lopsided than it turned out
(13:50):
to be at the end of the game.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
But you know that bending won't work as you move
further into a season. Doesn't happen that way because the
teams are just too good and if you're bending that
that damn ends up breaking and then it's an overflow.
And so we talked about that bending, but don't break
now you got you gotta shut that down. So and
I think it starts with in my opinion, it starts
(14:11):
with shutting down their run. You candle, the teams feel
like they're running up against you. One hundred and seventeen
yards once again felt like one fifty one sixty to me.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
It just felt that way well.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
And it's more like a tree in a storm that
bends one way and then it comes back and bends
the other way.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Good analogy.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
And I think what happens when you have that the
successful bend defense is that eventually, because you're playing so
well and you're holding the other team, you get the
turnover or you force of three and out. You do
something that kind of puts the momentum back on your side.
And then when you have good complimentary football, then the
offense lays the hammer on the other team and then
that kind of builds.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
You know, both sides build up on each other.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
And in fact that offensively we didn't score it to
the very last deal. I thought Johnson played extremely well.
I thought he ran the rock. I thought he ran well,
extremely well, and so there was a lot of things
so celebrate offensively. I thought that we blocked a little
bit better and running backs dwell.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yeah, when we come back, we will go over some
highlights in today's ball game. Still ahead wallscot final thoughts
into both we'll hear from coach Dave Canalis as well.
You're listening to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
This He's the Panthers postgame show presented by Southern Star,
an official bourbon of the Carolina Panthers. Celebrate the spirit
of the Carolinas.
Speaker 8 (15:30):
So read gifts Straight up the Middle, Touchdown, Touchdown.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
Carolina reaction and analysis to tonight's game with special guests,
highlights and updates from around the league.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
Complete Touchdown Right Side.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Next the Cats touchdown Panther Now what how about it?
Speaker 7 (15:48):
Now?
Speaker 1 (15:48):
What no to Brefatilla with the Panthers postgame show exclusively
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network, and.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
We're walking back to back of America Stadium. Panthers fall
to the Jets tonight fifteen to twelve. But there were
some bright spots over the course of today's ball game,
as we talked about a little bit earlier along with
Gene Robinson and Mike Pachico. No starters tonight for the Panthers,
and we didn't see most of the starters for the
Jets either. Aaron Rodgers did not grace the field tonight
(16:19):
and Bryce Young did I grace the field tonight. So
a lot of backups in the game today, But you
know that gave some guys a chance to shine, like
this guy in the second quarter, bring the cutch.
Speaker 7 (16:32):
In the receiver, Ian and I alignment over to the
left side of the right roll out. Now gripping back
in trouble going out with the sack? Is Peasley back
there as he was being a wrazzed pant.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Chased It was TJ. Smith gets the sack there. So
that was the one sack of the game that the
Panthers had. Let's go on to the third quarter. We
talked about some of the issues that the Panthers had
on special teams today and this was a huge one.
Speaker 7 (17:00):
Addie Beniero, Well, Jack a bunch of the five or
kickoff I should say, to the ten right to middle,
twenty five thirty running for Cawdridge right down the middle
at the forty to the Panthers forty five forty still
going inside the thirty five, finally tackled rum behind at
the thirty yard line. Big kickoff return to begin the
second half.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
But get the Panthers' defense credit, they really cracked down
after that and were able to hold the Jets to
just twelve yards after that and held them to a
field goal of thirty eight yards to hold the lead
to just six to three at that point. Well, then
the Panthers defense stepped up and one of the guys
that really had thought looked pretty good tonight, Demani Richardson,
(17:41):
played a pretty good ball game. But safety one of
the guys trying to make some impressions during this camp
at safety. He had a nice play.
Speaker 7 (17:51):
Coverage here on third down him one. This is the
Jets from their own thirty eight yard line. Martinez out
of a shotgun to throw over the middle, overthrows this
guy that's pickoff at the forty five year Richardson back
to the fortieth. The judge puts it inside the thirty
and he takes it all the way down to their
twenty six yard line, right on cue.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
And finally we finally got in the end zone. The
Panthers got in the end zone for the first time
since before Christmas. Merry Christmas. And the man carrying the
big sack of presence not Santa Claus, but he's our
hardest working player of the game. Presented by sun Belt Rentals,
the official retal equipment part of the Carolina Panthers. His
(18:31):
name is Dylan Johnson.
Speaker 7 (18:38):
Seven seconds to go quickly under center Johnson a single
set back hand off Dylan Johnson hit behind the line
of scribbage, tweeting his wing the goal line, touchdown Panthers.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
As time runs.
Speaker 9 (18:49):
Out, there you go, that was that again, that was
me scratching, he scratched.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
I know DJ is a master, or that's the DJ
doing the thing.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
I'm just telling you. I thought that he played.
Speaker 6 (19:09):
I thought he ran the ball extremely well, and I
thought he was so adept at getting on the outside
when he needed to get outside, starting up and inside boom.
Now I could see Tooba Hubby doing that same type
of movement, even s Male Sanders doing that same type
of movement getting on the outside.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
I'll tell you what DJ's buying full spot.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Well, and you know this is a thing full of spot.
This is the thing we talk about during the preseason.
I mean, when you look at the running back situation
the Panthers have right now, you know, you got Cuba Hubbard.
You figure Cuba Hubbard's pretty much locked in that he's
gonna be here. He could be your starting running back,
you know. Then he got Miles Sanders, you expect to
have him back. You got Raheem Blackshear, who's very valuable
(19:51):
in the return valuable. Well, then are you gonna keep
four running backs? So Mike Boone, he cared a lot
of the load last week, carried a lot of it
for most of the game this week than Dylan Johnson.
I mean, if you're keeping four running but you got
two guys and Mike Boone and Dylan Johnson really competing
for that for a spot.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
And here's the thing.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
What happens the special teams comes into play because based
on these guys talking about Boone Boonio Johnson, Okay, who
does special teams extremely well? Who's the guy I can
depend on to run down there on a punt oh yeah,
or punt return coming in as a punt returner, Uh,
not punt returning, but help with a punt return defense
sided the ball. Who's that guy? And so how well
(20:34):
you play on special teams makes a big deal.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
This guy go absolutely And you know, we don't see
a lot of what's going on behind the scenes in
practice and what the coaches are seeing beyond what we're
seeing in ballgame situations.
Speaker 6 (20:47):
And don't forget you're auditioning for the other team. Just
exactly auditioning for the other team. Yeah, other teams are
looking absolutely. And I tell you what, Dylan Johnson, the
way you played today, the way that you moved and
how fluid and how easy you were able to get
to the outside. If I'm a man, get a man
down on the ground, I'm telling you what. I like
the way he's working.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
It all right, Well we come back. I want to
get Eugene's thoughts on if we should see or how much.
We should see the first unit in the preseason finale
next week against the Bills. I think I already know
the answer. Yes, I feel pretty confident.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Anybody listening to the show over the years, I think.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
But we'll get Eugene's thoughts on that when we come back.
This is the Carolina Panthers Radio Network. Hey, welcome back
to the Panthers postgame show, presented by Southern Star and
official bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the Spirit of
the Carolinas. So oh, Eugene, we have not seen the
(21:47):
starting team one a's so far this preseason. We've got
two games down, one to go against Buffalo next week.
I know it's always a balance, especially now that we're
down to three preseason games. It's always about between trying
to get guys the reps and making sure that they
don't get hurt. So we have a new coaching staff
(22:11):
of the Panthers this year, there's a new offense being installed.
I know you usually you feel pretty strongly about these
guys need to have live reps at some point. So
where do you feel about going into this game of
Buffalo next week?
Speaker 6 (22:26):
So I'm old school guy, okay, and so you got
to take this with a grain of salt.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
Spos people and I might not like.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
To hear you want three practices a day.
Speaker 6 (22:38):
Here is the thing about a preseason play for the starters.
As you got live reps, you get to communicate with
the first unit. Communication is extremely important. It's one of
the backbones of what you do chemistry, developing, chemistry, what
your next neighbor. If I yell is a clear force
(22:59):
and you don't hear me, cleo, force in the corner,
doesn't force come up in the force and whatnot, then
we need to work on that communication across the board. Conditioning,
I'm talking about not just running with the cardio stuff,
but hitting people, get in the position to make tackles,
get in a position to block, all that type of stuff,
(23:19):
all that type of stuff. You start to condition, and
then you develop some consistency that when you that, when
you leave preseason, it ends up having being confidence. So
it's a whole bunch of season thrown out there. Communication, chemistry, conditioning, consistency.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
Confidence. Dude, you can't buy that.
Speaker 6 (23:41):
And you got a preseason game where you can go
ahead and do that, even if you do it four quarter,
even if you do a full series. That's there's a
live rep right there that you get a chance to go, oh,
this is what I need to work on.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
Oh I need to do this. Oh I need to
do that.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
So I think it's imperative that, Yeah, coach, I would
have my guys out there. I would have had them
out there this game getting the thing and then take
a rest for the next game. But I would have
had them working together so they can see it that
they can do that and live bullets, not like in practice,
but something that's live.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
If you were to make your case to Dave Canalis
about this, how much would having the off week which
the NFL has now between the last preseason game of
the first regular season game. How much would that play
into your argument?
Speaker 6 (24:28):
Yeah, it would plan my argument because that off week
allows you to get healed up. I mean if it's
a loss for your team to go it's every We
love off weeks. We love when you have a buy
because you go, oh, I've been playing football.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Doing a lot of football.
Speaker 6 (24:44):
But the one thing about this is that even though
you've been doing football, you haven't been doing it live.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
It's it's different. It's it's totally it's totally different.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
It's like you said, oh, I can make that butt,
I can hit like Jack Nicholas. Yeah, I could do that,
and he okay, go on do it, Brett. Let me
see you do it. Doing it in the live situations
down at the Masters.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
A little bit.
Speaker 6 (25:03):
Different now, oh and you got all the crowd. That's
actually oh, it's a little different now, right, That's what
I'm talking about, because you cannot there's no substitution for
having it live. I mean, in practice, you can simulate it.
But here's a problem with practice. With the Jets, everything's scripted.
You script everything. Just about ninety's practice gonna be scripted.
(25:27):
And what football players deal with improvisation. We deal with
this guy blocking. Now you got double team and now
oh oh he was a little blocking, now he's not blocking,
or what do you there's too much improvisation in football
that happens even in scripted stuff.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
So I'm I'm I'm old school dude.
Speaker 6 (25:45):
Get me out there for a quarter so I can
go ahead and get my feet underneath me and see
a life.
Speaker 10 (25:50):
Look.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
Yeah, I definitely think there's a value in come on,
coach and seeing game speed. And I think Dave canalis
this week. You know, when asked about it has left
that possibility open. But just for fun, you know, I
think the counter argument would be new coach. So yes,
there is film. I'm hen as you know a coordinator
in the past, but you can there's a we've seen
(26:12):
in the past where teams have and this team has
done this too in the past. But you come out
and nobody really knows what you're gonna do, So you
come out of the blocks. Takes maybe three or four
weeks to teams to adjust, So there is that element
of surprise that that as a possibility. The other thing
is I think we have seen kind of the lessening
of the of the workload, and so this kind of
(26:33):
plays into that a little bit. As far as health
and safety and not kind of working down the road.
Speaker 6 (26:39):
I do think that as somewhat a fallacy to think
that you won't get hurt on the very first play
playing playing in the game, or get hurt and proper.
Speaker 4 (26:46):
Just say you're not gonna step up the exactly here.
Speaker 10 (26:49):
Here it is.
Speaker 6 (26:49):
So my whole argument was, like every football player plays
about eighty ninety percent. They're not playing one hundred percent.
Nobody does. Nobody plays out one hundred percent unless when
you first start the first day of practice, boom. But
after that you're sore, your achy, your hands hurt, your
joy's hurt, you knee hurts. But he stepped on my finger, oh,
my shoulder, knee, all that happens. So there's no way
(27:12):
that you can take. That's why football players are tough,
because guess what, we can play with pay? All right,
we can play with pay, and we can play through pay.
That's what we can get and do. And so who
says that you're not gonna get hurt the first series
of game. It's not written in stone anywhere. So I
say throw that out the window, because every football player
deals with that, every team deals with that.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
And then get your guys and getting ready.
Speaker 5 (27:34):
But it's the same argument at the end of the year,
which is why I don't like when teams sit out
the last game.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
And then they sit out to that they sat out,
because I.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
Think there's value going into the playoffs with with that
speed and that camaraderie you said, Because I mean, it's
a full season of camaraderie and chemistry building.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
It's not just one game.
Speaker 5 (27:50):
So that's why I really don't like the last game
of the year when teams just take off. And I
understand the reason why I do. I toy get it,
but I just think you're better off. And I don't
the numbers tell you, but it'll be interesting to find out.
I just think it's better to have that going in,
you know, with.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
You want to be sharp.
Speaker 6 (28:06):
I mean, yes, and here's the thing you look for
that bye week, but you know, because you know you're
trying to get the number one spot so that you
have that buy and then have to come to you.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
That's a big thing. I get that. I want that because.
Speaker 6 (28:17):
That way we get to practice a couple of weeks
getting ready for you and let teams beat up on
each other.
Speaker 5 (28:22):
And I don't like this mentality either, that you can't
just shut it off and turn it back on again. No,
I mean that that doesn't work very often.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
No, Well, I know what you're talking about with you know,
hide it with a new offense. We spent the whole
preseason last year hearing you know, thanks not doing much
of the offense because we're playing the Falcons first, and
where you want to make sure the Falcons don't see
what we do. That works for one week, because once
you've played it one game. There's a lot of smart
(28:53):
people in this league and they're breaking that every.
Speaker 5 (28:55):
Yeah, but you're not throwing out the whole You're not
throwing out your whole bag of tricks in the first
week though. I mean, I think that that's a two
or three week process exactly.
Speaker 6 (29:01):
But here is when he's not throwing out your old
bag of trish nobody here. Football comes down to this.
If you gotta trick me, that means you can't beat me. Really,
that's what we said. If you gotta trick me, that
means you you can't line up and beat me. Football
comes down to you gotta line up and beat the
man in the mouth. I gotta line up and punch
you in the mouth. And you gotta punch me in
the mouth. Now, who's gonna do it?
Speaker 3 (29:20):
On what play? Were playing?
Speaker 6 (29:22):
Couple four, cover two, couple one. You're gonna go ahead
and get up in tight ends. You gotta beat the
man in front of you.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
That's what football comes out.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
It's like you're gonna punch a guy in the mouth.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
So beyond the schemes, beyond all this stuff, beyond how
fast somebody is behind, how quick you are when you
line up.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
Okay, let me see what you're gonna do. Now? What
are you gonna do? Now?
Speaker 6 (29:45):
And that's where it means football and rubbing measter road
at I'm sorry, I'm I'm on my high horse, a
little bit horse.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Watch out?
Speaker 2 (29:55):
Is it a white horse? It's a white horse. I'm
riding baby. There we go. All right, thank you boy.
I always look back to money Kiff and riding a
white horse at NC State. All right when we come back.
Well hear from head coach Dave Canalis. You're listening to
Panthers Football presented by Morris Jacobs.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
Back to the Panthers postgame show presemly by Southern Star
unofficial Bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of
the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Week two of the preseason in the books for the Panthers,
they fall to the Jets fifteen twelve and get rid
of their season preseason finale at Buffalo next Saturday afternoon.
In the meantime, let's hear what the head coach had
to think about today's ball game. The Panthers' locker room Show,
brought to you by Southern Star and official burbon of
the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas as
(30:48):
we head back to the broadcast booth with Jim, Kevin
and Kurt.
Speaker 7 (30:51):
All Right, guys, thanks and welcome back. Coach Dave Canal
is joining us now. It's Jim along with Kurt and
Kevin here and coach general thoughts. I mean, both teams
kind of played it same way roster wise, coming off
that joint practice session. All had great work on Thursday.
Similar roster setups here. Obviously the defenses shine a lot
of field goal kicking in this one, but overall it
looked like there there was some fire on both sides
(31:13):
of the ball. Special teams obviously as well. Did you
see improvement from last week?
Speaker 2 (31:17):
I did.
Speaker 8 (31:17):
What I saw was just the finish of plays, and
I've been just really harping on the guys at Garrod,
harping on the guys to finish, finish on the ball.
So that part from a defensive standpoint, definitely saw another
step in the right direction. Offensively, we were cleaner pre snap.
That was a step forward. But we had holding calls,
We had some things that came up. There was some
(31:39):
some really close calls, you know, an ineligible downfield, you know,
a block out side on a on a bubble screen.
You know, so some really close calls and I felt like,
you know, some of those things really ten penalties on
the day. That's something we have to continue to hammer
in practice so we can get.
Speaker 7 (31:56):
Good preseason football. Preseason by the.
Speaker 8 (31:58):
Way we did in the last drive, if we can
stay on schedule, if we can eliminate the penalties, we
can run the ball more, we can throw our boots
in our actions, and it allows us to stay on
schedule and get opportunities to score.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (32:13):
Well said right there, coach, And this is Kirk Coleman,
and I was giving you guys some really good positive feedback.
I really felt like you guys definitely took a step
forward from last week to this week in all areas.
With that, in the same breath, I do want to
kind of be a little critical and say, yeah, you know,
one thing that I've seen in the last two weeks
and I look back to I know we don't really
(32:35):
need to harp on last year, but just to statistically
looking at the average start of position, at the average
start line that you guys are starting at, and I
feel like last week you guys are really playing in
backed up positions. You give a big kickoff return, a
big punt return, but the times that you guys actually
started on the thirty five yard or plus, you guys
went actually in scored, whether it's field goal or touchdown.
(32:56):
I mean, how are you gonna kind of get that
to the guys and say, how do we win that
fuel position or that starting fuel position battle?
Speaker 8 (33:02):
Yeah, I mean it starts with handling adversity, right, So
you talk about the two big returns, definitely something we
have to clean up. Lost leverage on both of them
with big cutback type of runs, you know, so putting
our defense in a bad spot and then dealing with
adversity defense only let them come out with field goals.
So I thought that was a fantastic finish there, But
you hit it on the head, you know. We you
(33:23):
add those two returns and then you add the penalties.
Ten penalties. We're giving free yards on both sides in
the secondary. Offensively with the holding call, we had an opi.
We had actually two opis, you know, So like just
some of those things just makes it really hard to
play the style of offense that we want to play.
And really just you know, a couple of those three
(33:44):
and outs in the second half, leaving our defense out
there way too long. So some of the things that
we got to continue to hammer, you know, and be
hard on, and especially you know, you get three opportunities
in the red zone, we come away with one touchdown,
so we got to make sure that we're on the
on the positive side of getting touchdowns instead of field
goals there. But will take the points, any points help Again.
Second week in a row, I don't want to over
(34:05):
I don't want to look over this part of it.
No turnovers. Second week in a row. Had one scary
play ball bounced off of a safety's chest on a
play action that Jack threw. But other than that, we
were secure with the football and gave us a chance
to be in the game. It always gives you a
chance to win when you take care of the ball offensively,
and we took it away from them once. And the
(34:26):
story of it is just third down in those red zones,
trying to come up with touchdowns.
Speaker 11 (34:29):
Yeah, and coach, this is Kevin speaking of those red zone.
You know, you spoke about it offensively, But I like
to look at the trends the preseason, what's going on,
and obviously with the turnover tonight. I love seeing the
excitement and all the guys just rally around to celebrate
that turnover. But to me, a bigger part of it was,
you know, the red zone shutting them out zero for
two they got down there. It was a critical situation
(34:52):
one before the half. You know, it's tips into the
game when momentum could shift and the defense rose up.
Didn't matter the players were in there, but the feeling
of that defense, it seems like it's coming together and
gonna be on point when it's the week one of
the season.
Speaker 8 (35:05):
Yeah, it was fantastic. And a couple of fourth down
stops too, you know, those are huge, you know, as
the Jets were in that territory and that kind of
go for it or kick at long field goal area,
you know, our defense was able to come up with stops,
which is huge.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
You know.
Speaker 8 (35:17):
Offensively, we've got to turn those into points. You know,
we got to sustain those drives, staying manageable, you know,
like second and twenty one. I just don't have a
lot of great calls in that type of situation, you know,
so just playing good team football, you know we can
we can definitely do better there, all.
Speaker 7 (35:31):
Right, coach, another busy week road trip to Buffalo on tap.
Thanks for joining us, Hey, thanks for having me. Thanks
a right coach, Dave Canalis. There is the Jets win
fifteen to twelve in this preseason game. We sent it
back now to Brett, Mike and E Gene.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
All Right, Mike thoughts on what the coach had to say.
Speaker 4 (35:45):
Well, I think, you know, he's obviously and I like this.
Speaker 5 (35:49):
I mean, he's pretty optimistic and he's trying to stay
upbeat and kind of help build the confidence I do.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
I do agree with him on a couple of things. Obviously.
Speaker 5 (35:56):
You know, I thought, you know, the defense, you know,
make some some some pretty big plays, and you know,
and we've talked about this and this is not just
in this year, but going back past years, but he's
a hundred percent right on the penalties. You know, you're
you're you're you're kind of taking away drives and you're
extending the other teams drives when you're making these mistakes.
(36:18):
And I don't know that I've ever seen a game
where one team had three offensive passing off I know, you.
Speaker 6 (36:26):
Don't typically see that in a year. I know, I'm
I really don't see that push off. It may find
a little bit in the red zone if they if
they're actually calling it like they should be calling it
a little bit.
Speaker 5 (36:38):
But but that's a big area that needs to be
improved because we've seen a bunch of penalties now in
the first two games.
Speaker 6 (36:43):
Yeah, he talked about being clean pre snap and then
the fact that we kind of blow up because of
the penalties. And so I agree with them on that.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
The penalties.
Speaker 6 (36:51):
I think the secondary once again, they seem to be
it looked they looked really good to me. And I'm
just talking about the backups and so I can imagine
what the starters will will look like.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
So I'm excited about that.
Speaker 6 (37:06):
But my concern is is that when I look at
third down percentage, third down percentage has been willful.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
It was only twenty seven percent.
Speaker 6 (37:17):
Something you three out of a three to four eleven
is not only if you're talking about the red zone
not being able to score, I mean only having one
opportunity to score and the red zone having three opportunities
in there, but the three four eleven, that's alarming to.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
Me, and that's something that needs to get fixed.
Speaker 6 (37:35):
Beyond the penalties, the fact that you that we can't
go ahead and capitalize on third down to move the
change to keep the defense fresh.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
And so that's what be a concern.
Speaker 6 (37:46):
So I'm pretty sure a coach Canalis is going to
be addressing that as he moves forward.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
All right, this injury report brought to you by Atrium Health.
You deserve to live your best life. At Atrium Health
is here to help three play years that came up
an injury report during the course of the game. Anthony
Brown had a thumb injury, Tay Davis had a foot injury,
and towards the end of the game, Lamar Jackson's had
a great camp suffered a knee injury. We don't know
(38:12):
how serious those are at this point in time, but
something to keep an eye on over this coming.
Speaker 6 (38:17):
Week, can't I tell you. Everybody's always playing with something
and everybody gets hurt. That's part of the deal.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
All right, Still ahead, we'll hear from one of the
players who participated and had a big day today in
the ball game. Also we'll get the final thoughts from
the guys in the booth as well. This is the
Carolina Panthers Radio Network and welcome back to the Pator's postgame.
Speaker 9 (38:35):
Welcome back to thank you, an official purmon of the
Carolina Fanthers celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
You know, it's been a long day. You know, Wendell
gets busy on Saturdays. He's usually hot. He's usually hot
playing music by this point on Saturday nights he is Yes, indeed,
hear that, or he's out given gifts away. Well, it
looks like Santa Claus anyway.
Speaker 4 (39:00):
Because either he's doubling is like Gondole for.
Speaker 7 (39:03):
You.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
So that's what he was doing.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
He was telling me I shall not pass. They get out.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
We need to let everybody know. I mean, Wendell has
a prolific beard that's been.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Kind of like Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings.
And now let's make.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
Sure put about two hundred pounds. You could be Santa Claus.
Speaker 6 (39:24):
Yeah, but Window is cooler than the fans, so that
everybody knows that he's.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Cooler than a fan.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
Yes, he is absolutely.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
Sing too, by the way, I believe. Yes, he does sing, so.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
He didn't play. He's the singer sing. We need to
see him sometimes. Yeah, yeah, we need to do that.
Take a field trip.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
And then we'll do a post game show after that's
what we need to do. We'll critique the singing.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
That's just what he needs.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
Yeah, I think Wendell came in a little early on freebird.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Right, let's come back down, Jim, Kurt Kevin and see
who they caught up with.
Speaker 7 (40:06):
And guys were joined by Panthers defensive back de Banni
Richardson had the big defensive play in this game, big interception,
also made a very nice return on at about twenty
eight yards to set up an Eddie Pinero field goal
that tied the game at six to six in the
third quarter. And Demani playing center field out there a
little bit just kind of take us through the play
what you saw with your eyes, and then obviously once
you caught it, you knew what to do with the football. Yeah.
Speaker 12 (40:28):
So they had an empty set and when it's empty,
our linebackers go to like the three side, and so
I seen my linebacker covering the receiver, and our coaches
teach us to like lean to like the matchup like
the bad matchup on the field, So I did. Then
I kept the eye on that, and I remember they
(40:49):
did that same play and practice. I remember they did
the same playing practice. So I seen him he over
through the ball and I caught the pick. And I
played a little a little running back in high school
in my younger days, So yeah, that's why I should
have scored. But yeah, that's why I know what to do.
Speaker 10 (41:07):
Hey, demonic, Kirk Coleman here, and I'll just say start
up by saying, great play right there. You know, I
was telling coach at the end of the day, you
got to make people pay when they make the mistake.
And that's a great job of playing in the post.
But let me just ask you, how do you feel
about so far the mindset of the defense? How do
you feel like you guys have been playing through the
first two preseason games, and obviously what is your mindset
(41:29):
or what would you like to get done or improve
on for week three.
Speaker 12 (41:32):
I feel like we're doing a good job. I feel
like we can obviously clean things up and be better.
But overall, I think we're being physical, we're running to
the ball, making plays. I feel like we can also
get more turnovers, execute a little bit more. But going
into week three, I'll just say execute more and get
more turnovers.
Speaker 11 (41:54):
This is this is Kevin's good to talk to you,
great game. Talk to me a little bit about the defense,
the culture, and especially that dB room. You know you're
in that room, it seems like you guys have gotten
really close that you're making plays and it looks like
a unit's gonna come out ready to play once it's
the regular season starts. Just talk to us a little
bit about that room.
Speaker 12 (42:14):
Yeah, so the defense, the like the whole defense. I
feel like our mentality is great, from Shaq to Dereck Brown,
jac horn Ezever, I feel like those guys are like
the core guys, but like I feel like overall we
have like a bunch of good guys around them, and
like everyone's just wanna win and like play winning football,
(42:37):
do their job and go hard. So I feel like
overall everyone's like trying to get better each and every day,
and I feel like we're been doing we been going
doing a good job of that. I just feel like
we can also keep getting better. But I just feel
like this, I like playing at this in this system,
and I like playing with this group of guys. I
feel like it's just a good guy a good group
to be around in a dB room. Like I said,
(42:58):
I got people like Joe, Exavier, jac and they just
helped me day and day out just getting better and
me just getting information from those guys just helps me
be a better football player.
Speaker 11 (43:11):
All right, I'm a former offensive lineman, so just another
quick question here. What did it feel like to receive
that love? That love when you got that turnover and
the sideline and everybody cheering, Coach Canal is running down there.
Just just let me step into your world for a minute.
How did it feel?
Speaker 3 (43:26):
It felt good?
Speaker 12 (43:27):
Man, my first pick, so it felt great. And I
wasn't thinking about keeping the football. But Exavier, the older
safety of the vet in the room, he got the
ball for me and put it up and I just
I appreciate they appreciate those guys so much. It's just great.
It's a great group group. It's a great groups to
(43:48):
be around. I just love being around there and.
Speaker 7 (43:50):
To BONDI if you don't want that football, give it
to captain because step felt what you felt. So okay,
I got you feeling. Hey, continued, great success to you
and have a great week this wister.
Speaker 12 (44:00):
I thank you you all to.
Speaker 7 (44:01):
Trying to make this roster. That's how you do it.
Demani Richardson with the big play rookie out of Texas
A and m with the big interception in this game.
We sent it back down the hall now with Brett
Mike and a guy who knows a lot about interceptions,
Eugene Robinson.
Speaker 6 (44:12):
Yeah, there you go. How many fifty seven? Actually sixty
two because I got five in the.
Speaker 4 (44:18):
Playoffs, but yeah, yeah, no it's sixty two.
Speaker 3 (44:20):
Yeah, so did you.
Speaker 6 (44:21):
But I liked about the intercession by Richardson is that
when they caught the ball, he has a he has
a keen eye heart knowing how to run the ball,
and you can tell. I was like, oh, he's about
to score a testoyl or it looked like he had
an opportunity to score testdown. So you gotta have plays
like that. But what was impressive not only catch, but
was the run For me?
Speaker 2 (44:40):
Yeah, absolutely, very very good. I thought it was impressive.
Is how quickly Eugene answered my question.
Speaker 3 (44:45):
That's right. I'll let the boy fifty seven sixty two.
Speaker 4 (44:49):
Sixty two, Yeah, sixty two.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
I think that counts.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
Postseason count post.
Speaker 4 (44:53):
Season Actually you can. Postseason does not count.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
It does not counting your over I should, but it
doesn't count.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
So yeah, we need to do something about that.
Speaker 4 (45:08):
I never need to do something that we'll get him
a sixty two ring.
Speaker 2 (45:17):
Well, it will work on that, all right. When we
come back, we will get the final thoughts of the
guys in the booths. So stay with us. You're listening
to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
Back to Bred McMillan with more of the Panthers postgame
show presem by Southern Star, unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers,
celebrate the Spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
And welcome back be as you just heard the big voice,
guys say, this is the Panthers postgame show presented by
Southern Star and official bourbon of the Carolina Panthers. Celebrate
the Spirit of the Carolinas. And we're gonna head back
down to the hall and get the final thoughts of Jim, Kevin, Hey, Kurt.
Speaker 7 (45:54):
All right, guys, So low scoring game, defenses dominating, with
of course, so many of the key players both sides
held out following the joint practice sessions on Thursday. Five
field goals for the Jets, two for the Panthers. We
got a late touchdown from Dylan Johnson, at least he
got a touchdown and some points on the board that
were not a field goal on the final play of
the game actually capped off a nice little finish for him.
(46:15):
Eighteen carries eighty three yards. A bit of a workhorse.
The rookie out of Washington was one of the bright spots,
as was Demani Richardson with a nice interception return set
up a field goal, one of the two for the
Panthers in the game. As far as the field goal
department went to Kurt, start with you though here this
was a game that the defenses on both sides played
really well. We knew the Jets Sam Panthers you mentioned
in the pre game one was third, one was fourth
in yards allowed last year, that it might play out
(46:37):
this way, and it did, as the defense has kind
of remained ahead of the offenses. At least we're seeing
mostly backup players in this game.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (46:43):
Absolutely. I mean my final thoughts are I feel better
this week than I did last week. I saw I
saw times at which I said, you know what, we
actually have gotten better over these last six seven days
and we put in some good practice. You can see
that Jack is progressing. There's still areas obviously of improvement
across the board, but I was I feel much better
(47:07):
actually after this week, now, would you like to see
some of those things where can we sustain some drives
because we're not having the penalties. On third and sixteen,
we had a holding call that was called back. We
had another first down where it was offensive pass interference. Defensively,
we had a nice a third and long where we
had a defensive pass interference. But overall, holistically the areas
(47:28):
where I'd say, where do we got to improve? Third down?
Third three of eleven? Last week we were two or fourteen.
You got to see that increase a little bit more.
But that comes into just being fundamentally sound. Jack improved,
Jake came in. There's Jake. I feel like he's like
that safe bet. But Jack, there is something about him
that kind of it does intrigue me a little bit
of what can he do athletically and kind of possess.
(47:50):
And then Dylan Johnson offensively, I say, I mean, you're
not going to get many opportunities in the preseason. He's
making the most of every single opportunity you said that.
He made had a great pickup block where the guard
the guard was b He came in boom and he
gave his quarterback, Jake some operation time to be able
to throw the football obviously when the ball was in
his hands. So hey, special teams as well. I'll say this,
(48:13):
we gave two big special teams on a kickoff return
and a punt return. Those things cannot happen. So for me, overall,
we're getting better. We're moving in the right direction. You
still got to clean up some stuff on special teams.
Defensively a little bit, just a little bit on defensive
of offensively, when we get our starters in there, I
think this offense can move. I just want to see it.
Speaker 7 (48:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (48:33):
No, and then unless I Kirk brought up some great
points on this game, and I think we both have
the same feeling that it feels like a progression from
last week against New England, and you know, speaking offensively,
I think there really was a concerted effort to keep
this thing simple, yet it was productive at times. And
I say that because with you know, four new linemen
(48:54):
on the roster within the last week or so, you
really think about the strain of them trying to learn
the play that they have. So everyone around them knows
the offense, they've been around it, but they're very limited
in what they can do out there because they just
don't know the calls, the terminology, communicating with each other
and within that, you know, I thought executed very well.
I think they got to flow there at the end
(49:15):
of the game that it felt like they ended on
a high note that hopefully that carries over to that
third preseason game. I expect to see more starters. I
expect to see Sandy Dalton, I really do. I think
that that's coming where you get some of these guys
to at least have the offense run together for some series.
Now back to this game, you know, there was some
improvements and third down was better. It was awful tonight,
(49:35):
but it was better than the week before. Sacks last week,
five sacks, this week, just one sack. Some players stepping up,
he mentioned Dylan Johnson been on the defensive side. TJ Smith,
you know, followed up a strong performance last week with
one where he filled up a lot of the columns
this week with a tackle for a loss in a hurry,
a couple of tackles, a tackle for I should also
(49:57):
say two tackles total in the game, but it doesn't
sound like a lot, but several of those are game
changers on a drive where you really alter what the
other team's trying to do, and so he's fighting, like
Dylan Johnson, a lot of these guys to get playing time,
to be able to be on this roster, or practice
water or whatever they can do. So overall, I feel
great about the progression of it. Is it slow? Are
(50:17):
we all impatient? Yes to the answer, Yes to both
of those. But I'm looking forward to see what comes
on the field next weekend when they travel to Buffalo,
and then seeing possibly a glimpse of what Kurt said,
all the pieces coming together and seeing what it looks
like game one of the regular season.
Speaker 7 (50:36):
We'll see what they have in mind as far as
roster selection goes, as far as he's going to play
next week, And of course, guys has always that interesting
dynamic where late in the game the Panthers regular season
would have been in a hurry up mode try to
score twice. Instead, we saw an independent contractor make a
business decision as Dylan Johnson goes, give me that rock,
I'm getting some tape. I'm getting in the end zone
and made it happen on the last play. It was
(50:56):
fun to see.
Speaker 10 (50:57):
That's what's special about preseason. I mean, I think about
myself when I had very few opportunities. But what you
do is what you make of it. And Dylan could
have gone down at the two yard line very easily.
He did not give up. I mean, that's the stuff
that just pops off to me. I'm like, I want
this guy on my team. I want him in my huddle.
Now will he be a Day one contributor or team Now?
We have two running backs that are ready in prime,
(51:18):
ready to go, and then you have Jonathan Brooks coming
in off Andrew. But guess what we can stash. We
can put him away at anything happens. Because if you're
willing to sacrifice on offense and you're willing to do
something on special teams, guess what, We're gonna find you
a spot out there on that field. And that's all
you need.
Speaker 7 (51:34):
Part of the fun of preseason football seeing all the
different dynamics going on there. All right, Thanks for our crew.
Harold Hammrick and Jerry Dowd, Wendell Black, David Eades and
Matt Hogan By reputman, Amy Martin, Eric Filman, Christen Balboni
on sidelines and David Langton are executive producer Jets fifteen
Panthers twelve. One more preseason game to go next Saturday
from Buffalo. As we send it back down the hall
now with Brett, Mike and Eugene.
Speaker 2 (51:55):
All Right, thanks at guys, appreciate it. That nice job tonight,
and when we come back, we'll give you. You are
three and outs. You're listening to Panthers Football presented by
Morris Jenkins. All Right, gonna wrap up our Panthers postgame
show presented by Southern Star and official bourbon of the
Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas. So are
three and outs and start off with doctor E. Yeah, okay,
(52:17):
j E R E Rob Rob.
Speaker 6 (52:23):
I mean Kevin was saying the same thing I was
saying about seeing some of the guys and seeing some
of that first team units, seeing what those starters look like.
I think that's very, very important. So I'm gonna still
harp on that. I think that continuity, chemistry, consistency, communication,
all those things coming to play. And so seeing that
first unit out there, I know you have to, you know,
(52:46):
play that with the injuries, but I would put the
guys out there, and so that would be my choice.
I think also I need to see some improvement on
third down efficiency. That's one of the biggest stats we
look at defensively and offensively. If you're winning a third
down game, that means you're moving the changs. That means
you're keeping the defense on the field and you're dominating.
(53:07):
If you're not winning that game, that means you're off
on the sideline and your defense is on the field
and you can't get off the field. And so from
that standpoint, we need to win that. And then I
like the fact that he's talking about I'm seeing things
on the defense side of all of that aggressiveness, but
I need to see the converse and the compliment on
the offense side of the ball and on the special teams.
(53:29):
And I agree with you. I think we took a
step backwards special teams.
Speaker 5 (53:34):
Yep, Mike Well, I had the third down as well.
So the only thing I would add is just to
compliment what Eugene was saying, five for twenty five on
third down in the first two games here in the preseason,
so that.
Speaker 4 (53:45):
They that needs to get work.
Speaker 2 (53:47):
I can do that, man.
Speaker 5 (53:48):
Yeah, I think penalty. I know Dave Canal has talked
about this as well. Got to clean up the penalties
as well. Nineteen penalties in the first two games for
one hundred and forty five yards, so that's going to
start a lot of Well, the one thing I didn't
think we talked enough about that I thought really did
a pretty good job was the defensive front. I thought that,
you know, they had the one sack or the defense
(54:09):
as a whole, they had, you know, the one sack TJ. Smith,
and I thought particularly like that. I think it was
the second or the third series that Jets had. They
probably could have two more in that series, so I think,
you know, again to go uptail what Eugene was saying,
I think we saw a lot of good things on
the defensive side of the ball, and I think I'd
like to highlight the linebackers in the front line as well.
Speaker 2 (54:29):
I think we're all kind of seeing the same thing.
I also had cleaned up the penalties, like you said,
nineteen penalties and two games ten penalties today, and it
hurt drives and it stopped some drives where you had
something going and could have had something going. Even further,
I liked what the coach pointed out, and this is
something that in two games no turnovers, you had taking
(54:50):
care of the ball, absolutely taking care of the ball,
and that's a good thing, and keep that up. And
then finally it kind of along the lines of what
you were talking about, Mike, I'm feeling good about the
defensive depth. I mean, we haven't seen the defensive ones yet,
and yet watching what happened with the Jets tonight when
they had great field position, when they had taken momentum,
they were opportunities for them to go on in and
(55:11):
really grabbed this game by the throat, and the Panthers
defense stopped him and held him to five field goals
in this game, and they did a really nice job.
And these the two's and the threes, and now some
of these guys aren't going to be here, but it
makes you feel better about the depth that you're seeing
on this defense. You know, you feel like the first
(55:31):
string defense is pretty good based on what we saw
with this defense last year. But I like the depth
that I'm seeing with this defense.
Speaker 6 (55:37):
You know, Darren McClinton, a slash linebacker number forty on
the outside. Last week he had a sack and this
week he had what appeared to be a sack when
a quarterback was trying to run. But there was a
penalty that negated the face mask. Yes, it was a
pen that negated that. And I watched him on the outside,
(55:58):
I'm like, he's another that's a sleeper. Dock can actually
make this team at that slash linebacker defensive end spot
now three to four defense.
Speaker 2 (56:06):
Yep, So it'll be interesting to see. The next game
will wrap up the preseason. It'll be next Saturday in
Buffalo at the Panthers Stadium. Show starts at ten o'clock
in the morning. Yep. It's an early preseason game this week,
and you'll hear that on the Fox. Then the countdown
to kickoff starts at noon. Kickoff is at one o'clock
for the final preseason game. Then the three of Us
will be back for the postgame show around four o'clock.
(56:29):
Once again, the final today, the Jets win it over
the Panthers fifteen to twelve.
