Speaker 1 (00:03):
No to Brett McMillan with the Panthers postgame show presuming
by Southern Star unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers, celebrate
the spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
And welcome to the post game show. Glad to had
you win, us Area, Eugene Robinson, Mike Pachica, myself. Life
from back of America Stadium as the Panthers wrap up
the preseason where they feel good performance as they beat
the Bills and the starters. They were going to play
the whole first half at one point and instead they won.
Put together one great opening drive and that was all
(00:41):
they needed to do.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
It.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
I'll tell you one drive. It was it.
Speaker 5 (00:46):
And when I was concentrating on that drive, I was
concentrating on the left tackle. I wanted to see how
Ikey would perform, and I thought he played some stellar,
stellar football. There was some situations on Why nine where
he would go out to reach to get the guy
where he was patient, good footwork and let the guy
naturally meet him at the point of contact where you
(01:08):
would intercept them before he gets to the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
And then he was ferocious with his hands.
Speaker 5 (01:13):
So I think the offensive line, which we've been waiting
to see allow Bryce to be stellar, to be absolutely stellar,
and that's what we're looking for. And I'm so glad
that coach Kanal has made the decision to play those
starters because chemistry, communication, consistency, confidence, all that stuff. We
(01:33):
saw that kind of materialize out there on the field today.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
And still, Mike, there were out two of the guys
without two of the guys in the offensive line they
expect to have starting in the regular season.
Speaker 6 (01:42):
Right, And I think the one thing that you know,
you like to see the depth and the continuation of
this team improving from week one to week three. You
made a great point about this is the best we've
seen Jake Plummer. Look, but how about this. I think
it was seventeen different receivers caught at least one mass
in this game. But the other big thing I think
it was important too. You know the offensive line, you know,
(02:02):
some of those guys getting some the two guys getting
some reps that maybe they wouldn't normally get.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
They stood in did a good job.
Speaker 6 (02:07):
And I think the plan originally was to maybe go
a little bit deeper into the first half, but I
think that first.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Drive was it was enough.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
So methodical and why rest getting you know, you saw
what you needed to see, so you know, let's move on.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
And coach said he would be fluid to a little
bit more organic and let things develop and so see
if the guys maybe needed another series. And I would
agree with you. I don't think they needed another series.
I thought I saw everything I needed to see. And
I'm in a comment like last week that hey, maybe
coach Canalis knows something that we don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yes, by not.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
Playing the starters until now, and so it looks they
look really really good and very very promising.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Well, I thought one of the interesting points he made
was talking about he wanted to see what the health
of the team was going into the third game. He
wanted to see if he was going to have an
offensive line that could be cohesive, that he had enough
depth left in the offensive line to this point that
it wouldn't be damaging to put the starters out there,
which I thought was an interesting point and I hadn't
(03:05):
really considered.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
That, you know, And one thing I need to echo
to with the coach.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
He treated this like a regular season game the Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday practice, as you kind of prepare all the installation
stuff that you do and then to walk through and
then as you get to the hotel's breakfast and hydration
and all the stuff. And then he played the starters
that first series. That's what you do to get ready
(03:31):
for the season. And if you don't play them, I
think is a miss opportunity, a very misopportunity to get
your mind right to say, hey, this is what the
season will look like, this is what it would be.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
And we you know, I thought one, let me flip
it outside.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
I thought defensively we weren't as strong, and I thought
we bent a little bit too much. However, it was
more than enough with the offensive explosion to go ahead
and compensate for the defense who'd been stellar in the
first two preseason games.
Speaker 6 (03:59):
And I also think what was nice that we've seen
now that we've seen three preseason games. I like how
everything you can see the organization and you can see
how everything was laid out. Remember after the first game,
we were really impressed when Dave Caneal said, hey, I
treated this game as a real game because I wanted to.
I wanted to make sure my mechanics in managing a
game work. So like every game has had has served
(04:19):
its purpose, And I think this game makes more sense
to put the starters in this game because you have
next week off, so if you have some minor bumps
and bruises, you get that extra week to And this
traditionally was when the starters would get the majority of
their time, So why not get them game ready going
into the first game?
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Absolutely to your point, Eugene talking about going through the routine.
I think it even helps at another level because it
was a one o'clock game, right, and almost every pan
how many the majority of games this year are one
o'clock games, So that really helps you get into that routine.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
You know, and those little things kind of you know,
they escape you a little bit, but they don't escape
the coaches that who this is their job and this
is what they do and putting together the team. And
so what we saw today offensive and the paces of Bryce,
the eyes looking at the progression of Bryce, the office
of line, and how well they blocked the moving out
(05:10):
of the pocket, the bootleg, the dash.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
We saw a lot of good stuff.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
They ended up going wait a minute, now, hold on,
wait a minute, the Carolina path is gonna maybe surprise
some people, you know, And I'm not getting overly excited.
I'm just saying, it looks so much better from what
I thought it would look with the start is starting
right now.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Give me your thoughts of what you saw Bryce Young today.
They go twelve plays, eighty five yards, convert a fourth
down in which he scrambled yep and threw a pass
for seventeen yards of Deontay Johnson. He was six of eight.
One of those was a throwaway, which was the right
decision to make at that point in time because there
was nobody else. He went through all his progressions, threw
(05:51):
it away because it was nobody open.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
And remember that busted play when he's kicking out to
his left and he made a beautiful throw on the run.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
You know the difference.
Speaker 6 (05:59):
Look again, the game plan from going back to April
and May and going into the draft free agency, you know,
was to was to create a comfortability for him having time,
so obviously putting a lot of work on the offensive
line and then getting him some some other weapons. And
I think, you know, we're starting to see something we
(06:19):
haven't seen in a little bit, and that's I think
we're seeing hope that doesn't I don't know what that's
going to translate yet.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
I mean, we we have.
Speaker 6 (06:25):
To see three or four weeks in before we know
exactly what's gonna happen. But I think for the first
time in a couple of years, I think you can
see some positive signs going into the season and feel
start to feel a little bit good about that.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
And to your point, with the improvisational play going to
the left hand side, Ikey did a great job because
he destroyed the defensive end on that side to allow
for Bryce to get out in that flow and throw
across his body. And typically you don't right hand the quarterback.
You don't want to throw across your Bikey right because
that ball is gonna be short.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
However, you go no, no, no, oh, good, good good.
That's a good play, you know, And it was a
really good catch.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
It was something Mike we we heard a lot about
as last year progressed, because if we thought going into
last year that the offensive line was going to be
a real strength of this team, and instead it turned
out to be a real weakness. But it turned out
to be a weakness because the personnel you had at
the offense spend the offensive line, their skill set did
(07:21):
not match the blocking schemes that that that the staff
was asking them to do so.
Speaker 6 (07:28):
Right, because they changed the personnel was the same from
the year before, but.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
The injury happened to Yeah. Yet, yeah, Christ had a
lot of jury.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
You were running a different blocking scheme and it didn't
fit the personnel you had at that point. So now
it's going to be interesting to watch and see if
this staff and the person and what the what they
are expecting this this team to do, this personnel to do,
if it matches up with your skill set.
Speaker 6 (07:54):
Well, I've seen signs, particularly in this game, and Gina
and I were talking about this in the second half.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Is you you get it?
Speaker 6 (08:00):
You have a better sense of what this team is
trying to do after three preseason games than I think
maybe we did at the same point last year because
it was it just seemed like and some of it
was injury, some of it was this blocking team, but
it just this feels more organized. Last year felt a
little bit more disorganized.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
Yeah, and don't forget I think it's only seventy seven
yards rushing, right, But when I looked at the runs
and particularly Hubbard running, Boone running, I'm like, hold on,
wait a minute. Offensive line is smashing people. They're pushing
people off the ball. There was a play and I'm
talking about Ikuano icky that he just drove a man
like a Nissan man.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Get out of my way, dude, get out my way.
Right drove them and I'm like, okay.
Speaker 5 (08:41):
And the patience of the backs getting them moved hitting
the hole, I'm like, Wow, that's something you can hang
your hat on, because to your point, we haven't seen it.
And I really think that the backbone of this offense
has always been running the ball and the offensive line.
And I said this, if you're offensive line is hot,
the offensive line is smoky. My goodness. Your quarterback. Your
(09:04):
quarterback can be average and you can be a you
could be great. Your running back can be average. If
your offensive line is doing their job, they make everybody
look great.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
We're still coming up pair of the next hour, we'll
go over the rest of the action of the National
Football League, what's going on this weekend, and it's going
on as we wrap up the preseason and get ready
for the regular season. Highlights from today's game, we'll get
the final thoughts into both. Also hear from hey coach
Dave can Allison as well, So stay with us as
you listen to the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Hey, welcome back to.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
The Panthers postgame show, present to my Southern Star and
official purbod of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of
the Carolina as along with the Gene Robinson, Mike Pachico,
Brett McMillan. Glad to have you with us, says. Panthers
wrap up the preseason with a thirty one twenty six
win over the Buffalo Bills. And how many times last
year did the Panthers score more than thirty one points
in a game?
Speaker 7 (10:00):
Gentlemen?
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Twice? Twice?
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Thirty one?
Speaker 2 (10:04):
No? No, okay, no, no, no, no, ask the question.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
It was twenty four.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Yeah, yeah, the questions. No, that's why I asked the question.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
I asked the question to get it and explain why
we said.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Yeah, what we were talking about when the score with
hands said twenty five on the board, right, and you
guys looked it up. So now there's thirty one on
the boards. The question has been updated. Yes, yeah, yeah,
you threw a curve on us. How many times? How
many times last year did the Panthers scored thirty one?
Speaker 4 (10:31):
One time?
Speaker 2 (10:32):
One time?
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Yes, one time? And that wasn't a losing effrom wasn't nice.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Yes it was. They scored what thirty against against Seattle
to Seattle?
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yes, yeah, what was it? Thirty thirty?
Speaker 2 (10:44):
And I like the fact that this was all these
no wait, yeah right, yes, no they scored. They didn't
at all. No, No, it was thirty.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
It was thirty thirty Bay, it was thirty.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
They did not score any times over thirty twenty seven
against and then thirty against Green Bay. Oh yeah, so
it was yep, zero times.
Speaker 8 (11:02):
Okay, so since we since we know nothing, we know nothing?
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Is it.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
We know absolutely not?
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Join let's do this segment again.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
Oh gosh, ask the question all over again. Mind it back,
all right, But the office of explosion.
Speaker 5 (11:28):
That was great to see because we haven't seen that
many points put up, you know, in a while. And
the fact that we were always scoring moving down the field.
And let me just say something about Jordan Matthews. Don't
don't you get the sense that he is a special
gym at tight end? I mean and in the same
throes of of of what was the guy from New Orleans,
(11:51):
Jimmy Graham kind of like a Jimmy Graham type player.
My goodness, or what was the one in San Francisco? Gates,
Vernon Gates. Yeah, yeah, there's something up Gates. I'm sorry,
there's something about him that I'm sitting going like this.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
I'm trying to put my finger on it.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
But he is special catching the ball out under that
backfield on the side, on that little boot leg stuff
that he's doing and getting down the field.
Speaker 6 (12:15):
Well, especially in modern times, I mean, every good team has,
or most every good team has a legit tight end, right.
I mean you get like I mean Gronkowski with with
New England and you look at you know, Kelsey now
with Kansas City. I mean it's such a safety valve
for the quarterback and a guy that in like Greg
Olsen did this right, I mean absolutely take a seven
eight yard catch and turn into a fifteen sixteen seventeen
(12:37):
yard game.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
I made a note during the game that, especially in
the second half, how much this offense is going to
run through tight ends. In the offseason, I kept thinking,
how many people do we need in the tight end room?
I mean, they kept signing people after into the tight
end room, and yet I watched this today. I'm going, now,
I understand where the Panthers kept signing so many people
in the tight end room. It's going to be a
really important position.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
For this team because that tight end is also that
modified fullback too, because they're interchangeable from fullback to tight end.
You're on the line of scrimmags. Sometimes you're off the
line of scrimmage. You're moving across the motion, you're going
ahead and doing that little wham block that we.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
Saw a couple of times today.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
I was thinking of Vernon Davis from San Francisco Thank
You Podcast, Matt and I was thinking of Antonio Gates
from San Diego Charge at the time. Yeah, And so
there's something about Jordan Matthews. I'm going, man, I like
the way you I like the way you play ball.
I like the way that if I get the ball
in your hands, you're about to do something special with it,
(13:35):
and you get the feeling of that, the same thing
I get with Smith. Mark said, and he gets the
ball in his hand, it looked like something special is
getting ready to happen. So that's the excitement that you want.
If you're sitting in the stands watching the Carolina Panthers
play that, you go, oh wow, I love Steve Smith,
stee Smith, get the ball in his hand. You go, oh,
(13:56):
wait a minute, now, Smiddy got the rock. He about
to put work in. We got the rock, you about
to put cam got the rock. You better watch out
right and top of excitement for me.
Speaker 6 (14:05):
But a good tenant also forces the defense to make
a decision. Yeah they want a double team, Oh.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Yeah, absolutely, And I don't want to.
Speaker 5 (14:10):
I'm not gonna put a linebacker on on Jordan Matthews.
I want to put a big safety on top of
him because I need somebody will, some speed and also
some strength to handle him. And I don't want him
beating the linebackers. And I think he is a matchup
problem going forward, as I see for the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
He's a matchup problem for people.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
All right, let's go take a driver around the league,
brought to you by your Honted Dealers of the Carolinas. Mike,
what else is going on in the National Football League
this afternoon.
Speaker 6 (14:36):
Well, in a couple of weeks, we'll have multiple games
at this time, but now we only have one game
underway right now, and that's the Chargers at the Cowboys
Dallas at home. Oh, Chargers to score, So it's now
six to three. It was a three nothing lead for
the Cowboys. Also coming up tonight, next game will be
at seven thirty Giants or at the Jets, kind of
the classic New York, New York, New York, New York,
New York game. Bronz the Panthers first week opponent. Tomorrow
(15:04):
it'll be the Titans and the Saints. That'll be at
two o'clock Local time, one o'clock, one o'clock Local time,
two o'clock Eastern time. Cardinals are at the Broncos, Patriots
at the Commander's and then also finals from earlier today
you had Lions beating the Steelers twenty four to seventeen,
Packers over the Ravens thirty to seven, Texas by two
over the Rams seventeen to fifteen, and the Eagles at
(15:25):
home loose to the Vikings twenty six, two three, and
of course in our game Panthers thirty six to twenty.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Six over the Bills.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
But the shot heard round the world was in Ireland today.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yes, from Ireland. Florida State discounted because it's week zero.
The college fall zero Ye, thank YOUSPN right.
Speaker 6 (15:42):
So Florida State in action against Georgia Tech. Somebody told
me Nick Saban said either today or yesterday that he
thought Georgia Tech was going to be his surprise ACC team.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
I saw that and Arilla.
Speaker 6 (15:54):
Yes, and Aiden Burr who was won for two on
field goals on the day, but he buries a forty
four yarder with time expiring to upset the Florida State Seminoles.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Wow, twenty four to twenty one. Georgia Tech beats Florida State.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
Didn't.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Well, you know, Florida State had a hard time taking
them seriously because they were just an ACC team.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
Country man, they're suing the lague.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
They want to get out. I don't know where they
think they're going.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
You know, you're absolutely right. We'll see.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
But yeah, what well, you know we were talking about
off the air, Yeah, when that Tenna State was Ranck
number two. Yeah, the tenth rank Florida State.
Speaker 6 (16:34):
But in the transfer portal era, Yeah, you do a
preseason ranking, that's what you can, but it's not useful.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Piece of paper. State prematurity people for last year's team
or something.
Speaker 6 (16:44):
Yeah, I think I think what was Matt Hogan or
you said this, But you really need to wait like
four weeks into the season before to do.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
A legitimate absolutely to do it properd Yeah, yeah so,
but yeah, great way to start the college football year.
It's gonna be that kind of year, I guess that,
which means fun for everybody. A bunch of games Thursday
night this week too, I know, day games Thursday night
this week. All right, when we come back, we'll go
through some highlights today's Panthers game. So you want to
stay with us as you're listening to Panthers Football presented
(17:10):
by Morris Jenkins.

Speaker 9 (17:35):
Complete touchdown, right side next the catch, touchdown Panthers Now,
what how about it?
Speaker 10 (17:41):
Now?
Speaker 5 (17:42):
What?
Speaker 1 (17:42):
No to Breathatilla with the Panthers postgame Show, exclusively on
the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 11 (17:54):
This is third down in Gold for the Panthers. From
the eight yard lines. Back receivers both to the right,
the left Hubbard the running back to the white side
of Young who's setting up the throw over the middle,
wide open touchdown as the Panthers tight end. The veteran
Jordan Matthews scorers on the opening drive for Carolina.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
That's right, Jordan Matthews get touchdown number one as the
Panthers go on to beat the Bills thirty one to
twenty six. That was the end of an opening drive
that the Panthers go twelve plays eighty five yards to
score the touchdown as the starters started one series and
put it on the board. The Panthers' locker Room Show,
brought to you by a Southern Star and official bourbon
of the Carolina Panthers, celebrate this bit of the Carolinas.
(18:33):
We're gonna head back to Buffalo where Jim, Kevin, and
Kurt have cut up with mister Matthews.
Speaker 11 (18:38):
Allright, guys, thanks and welcome back to Buffalo where the
Panthers close out the preseason with a thirty one twenty
six victory over the Bills. It's Jim, along with Kurt
and Kevin upstairs and Jordan Matthews who got the ball
rolling with that touchdown grab off the opening drive. With
the starters out there on the field. I'm joining us
now on that eight yarder and just that drive overall, Jordan,
(18:58):
thanks for joining us. First of all, thanks for having me. Yeah,
I had a lot going on as far as you know,
having not seen the starters out there and having Bryce
Young in the group out there with the ones with
you out there as well. And how did that feel
just to have that that rhybim on an eighty five
yard touchdown drive?
Speaker 12 (19:12):
No, I felt good.
Speaker 13 (19:13):
I mean, anytime we can, you know, go out there
and honestly show everybody we've been working on is always
a good feeling. We wanted to make sure we had
a good, clean drive. We know that we've been working
these tendencies and these you know, uh, these blocks is
everything that we've been doing through camp, Like we've been
honing in on just some of the simple things, man,
(19:34):
just making sure we're honing in on the fundamentals. And
so we got a chance to go out there and
show if I'm glad we're able to go out there
and score on the first drive.
Speaker 12 (19:40):
And just get some momentum going to the season.
Speaker 10 (19:42):
Hey, Jordan, Kirk Coleman here, Kurt was that baby how
you doing, brother, So you've been You've been pretty consistent
throughout this preseason. You've been I think a safety valve
for for Jack for the first two games, and obviously
you were a big piece in that scoring drive. I mean,
how would you rate just kind of where this offense
is and how do you kind of see where can
this offense really go as this season kind of progresses.
Speaker 13 (20:04):
You know, I don't I don't want to get too
much in the rating because you know, it's it's so early.
I've been around this game a long time and I
don't want to speak too soon about something that I
see in a third preseason game. But I will say this,
the guys are confident, and we're trusting the coaching, and
I just love the energy the guys are bringing the
practice every day. I think today, I think a lot
(20:27):
of people got to see, you know, something that was positive.
But I think for me, we were going against our
defense for a long time. We've got a world class
defense that we get to work up, work up against,
and I think for me personally, I was excited to
see how we would do when the Jets came in town,
and I felt like our offense responded really well that day.
So I think we're building confidence. I think the guys
are going to work every day. Like nobody's making these
(20:47):
grand statements about what we're gonna do this year. We're
just putting our heads down, we're working. I think that's
the best posture to be in going into a season.
So I'm excited about it, and I think the guys
are too. Hey, Jordan, it's.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Kevin donaland I'm a former lineman for Carolina Panthers. Think yeah,
I'm glad to tell you. Have your hand on the
ground there and now and again.
Speaker 12 (21:04):
Hey, I'll tell you. I tell you what, man, it's crazy.
Speaker 13 (21:05):
I put my hand in the dirt and and people
get interested in you again. So hey, you know, but
it's fun. I love it. I tell you all the time.
The best thing about the tight end position is you
really feel involved in the entire game. That receiver you
can go in and block, and there's a lot of
schemes where blocking for receivers is important, but it still
comes down are you are you how many balls are
(21:25):
you catching? Just that's just the nature of the beast.
But at tight end, man, you can literally impact every
single place.
Speaker 12 (21:30):
So I love it.
Speaker 7 (21:30):
Man.
Speaker 12 (21:31):
So I'm having just as much fun as you are watching.
So let me follow up a little bit on that though.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
So you know, receivers would kind of mess around the
old line every now and again, but tight ends. You know,
there was there was a kinship there. We knew that
you guys were helping on the edge, helping with different
blocks and things like that. How have you gotten how's
that relationship with old lineman? Now, it's probably gotten stronger
since you've moved to that position.
Speaker 13 (21:52):
I've had so much fun with I've actually been like
close to my old line my whole career. You know,
when I first came into the league and I had
you know, Jason Peters, Jason Kelcey, Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks.
I was around guys like that. Then at the Niners,
I was close to really close to Trent Williams and
be able to come here, like when I come into
the huddle, I see big Timo Smayn at me, Big
seventy two. That's my guy, man, and it just gives
(22:13):
me confidence. And I don't want to let that guy down,
you know. And I see those guys in that huddle,
it just energizes me to go out there and do
what I can, you know, to hold up the mantle
and hold the standard of what those guys are doing.
Speaker 12 (22:25):
So you know, I love it. It's it's and like.
Speaker 13 (22:27):
I said earlier, like you really truly feel involved in
every single point in the game.
Speaker 12 (22:31):
At tight end. It's like there's no dole play, There's
no oh.
Speaker 13 (22:34):
I'm just running decoy. No, every single part of the
game matters. So I'm enjoying it just as much as
I think anybody that gets to do it well.
Speaker 11 (22:41):
Jordan said, it was fun to watch today, is fun
watching you guys have fun playing football out there, and
special of luck with everything coming up over the next
couple of weeks.
Speaker 12 (22:49):
Man, thank you so much, thanks for having me. Guys,
y'all awesome, appreciate you.
Speaker 7 (22:52):
Thank you.
Speaker 11 (22:53):
Jordan Matthews started out in sleek as a very good receivers,
made that move to tight end later in his career
and to affect up today with the eight yard touch
down and grab. As we said it back to Charlotte
Now with Brett, Mike and Eugene Well, we.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
Were talking about the tight end position and how I,
like I said, I made a note during the game,
You're gonna see a lot of this offense guys run
through the tight end position.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
We saw the bootleg first with Bryce Mays, that first
uh recept a pass to to Jordan, and then we
see the testdown that little delayed, and we at the testdown,
we saw his uh, his receiving skills take place because
he's off the line of scrimmage and now he has
to go ahead and do a little little hesitation stuff
and and and make people miss and he ended up
being wide open. And so from that standpoint, you know,
(23:37):
you got a guy in us like an Olsen type guy,
a guy that's like a Brendon Davis.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
We talked, Jimmy, you got a guy right there, and
then a guy who knows the value of working with
the offensive line and how important is when it's run
play to get your job done. And so from that standpoint, well,
hearing that interview and hearing him speak and hear him
not be overly excited about it, but be somewhat reserved
(24:03):
about what they got going on and not saying, hey,
we're gonna be gang busters, but you know, we'll keep
our head down and we're gonna go ahead.
Speaker 4 (24:11):
And work consistently. I like it, and I like him.
Speaker 5 (24:15):
I like him because that's a guy that, obviously you
build a team around, and a guy who helps the
team well.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
And he said a lot without saying too much, right,
I mean, yes, he talked about the confidence that this
team has, how they you know, how well he works
together with the offensive line, how they trust the coaching staff,
and you know, it's it's obviously for you know, for
the listener, the fan, you know, they want to have hope.
But when you have fifty three guys and I know
(24:42):
we're still at ninety, but you know this week it's
going to get down. But when you have fifty three
guys in that locker room that also have hope and belief,
that's when good things can start to happen.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
There's no doubt. And the chemist. Here's the thing that
and I've I've been harping on playing in the preseason,
this chemistry that develops, this chemistry that happens on the
playing on the practice field, and then it just translated
to the field. And when he's talking about Timo is
my guy, that that means they've talked, That means they
(25:15):
communicated on twist stunts. That means he had my back
when oh man, the guy got loose for me and
he came inside. Russian Timo was there to pick him up.
There's a lot implied and said in that statement when
he says Moten's my guy, you know, at the right
tackle position, And I'm like, wow, you said a mouthful
there too, And that tells me about the chemistry and
(25:37):
the communication that happens on the field that goes unseen.
And that's why you playing in a preseason game because
of that very same reason, because that's what you're that's.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
What you're doing.
Speaker 5 (25:48):
And we saw that on display with this team the
first series, and I said they performed exceptionally well.
Speaker 4 (25:57):
That was a pleasant surprise scene.
Speaker 6 (25:59):
But I also think over there are times where you
look at a team and their professionals. They have a
job to do and regardless of the outcome, they still
have to come and do their work. But a team
that is not playing well, they know they're not playing well,
and it's almost like that attitude of like I got
to go to work today instead of I want to
go to work today. And I think you're starting to
feel this team has that sense of hey, I want
to go to work.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Today, no doubt, we get to do this, not that
we have to do this. Yeah, exactly, exactly right right,
still ahead, we'll have some highlights from today's ball game.
We'll hear from head coach Dave Canalis, also the stats
as well, So stay with us on the Carolina Panthers
Radio Network. Hey, welcome back to the Panthers postgame show
(26:42):
presented by Southern Star and official Brebend of the Carolina
Panthers celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas Panthers win it
over the Bills in the preseason finale thirty one to
twenty six, along with Mike Pachico, Eugene Robinson, Brett macmillan.
Glad to have you with us. So let's go through
some highlights of today's ball game. Opening drive, the Panthers
played their starters and early in the drive they haste
(27:04):
a fourth and three at the forty six yard line
of the Bills. It's not riverboat Dave. We'll call him
dry Dave. How about that he decided to go for
it first and here's how that went.
Speaker 11 (27:21):
Stack receivers left and right, ChEBI Hubbard to the right
side of his quarterback Bryce Young out of the shotgun,
steps up in the pocket. Young rolling to the left side,
being pressured by his time, throws downfield coupley to Deontay
Johnson right before he steps out of the out route
out of bounds near the thirty yard line.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Yep, got him the first down. They got him to
the twenty nine. They got down to the eight and
Bryce Young found a touchdown.
Speaker 11 (27:47):
This is third down in gold for the Panthers. From
the eight yard line. Stack receivers both to the right
and the left. Hubbard the running back to the right
side of Young, who's setting up to throw over the middle,
wide open touchdown as the Panthers tied up the veteran
Jordan Matthews scorers on the opening drive for Carolina.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
All Right, defense filled with guys trying to make this team.
Cutdown day coming up on Tuesday. Everybody looking to impress somebody.
Speaker 11 (28:15):
Third down and six to new chief hocket collapsing and
so is he back up the twenty yard line. Panthers
defense gets to him, had a big sack all the
way back to the twenty yard line.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
And we just mentioned his name a moment ago, and
Kevin said.
Speaker 11 (28:28):
He's got that cast on his hand to Cam Gill,
the linebacker, and their first to get in there and
get the quarterback sacked.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
Near the end of the first half, the Panthers got
the ball again. At this point, Panthers were down eleven
to seven, but they put together a quick little drive
of less than three minutes covering fifty one yards after
a great kickoff return by the Panthers, and they got
down to the five yard line. This is a guy
who's seen a lot of this preseason.
Speaker 11 (28:55):
Almost go the tight end over to the left side
and up the poon, right up the metal.
Speaker 7 (28:59):
Nobody touches him into the end zone.
Speaker 11 (29:01):
Five yard touchdown r on by Mike Boone and the
Panthers go back in front.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
All right after the first drive, we thought we might
see Andy Dalton committed quarterback. Instead, they just decided to
go with Jack Plumber. And I think he's.
Speaker 4 (29:13):
Come leap bounds absolutely.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
During this preseason. He's learned the NFL game is a
lot different than the college game, and he really has
looked good. Led a great two minute drive at the
end of the first half. It wasn't a two minute drive,
it was a minute and five second drive, got on
a forty five yard field goal, and then in the
third quarter he got this touchdown.
Speaker 14 (29:34):
Pass inside on a slat Marshall opened at the ten
to the five, and he finds his way into the
end zone for the touchdown for the Panthers.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Parris Marshall. I saw the slant play there and then
one more time. As matter of fact, we're gonna make
Jack Plumber our hardest working player of the game. Bill Reynolds,
the official rental equipment and partner of the Carolina Pants.
There's let's get another touchdown pass.
Speaker 11 (30:04):
Hoping to beat his former Seminoles back to throw, Plumber's
gonna throw on a go ball, left side, look at
for Coker. Got it perfectly thrown at the vibe.
Speaker 7 (30:12):
Coker brings it.
Speaker 11 (30:13):
In, walks into the end zone, touchdown Panthers.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
And the Panthers go on to win it. Thirty one
twenty six Plumber twenty one of twenty nine, two hundred
and seventy eight yards, a couple of touchdowns, and one
hundred and twenty five point four quarterback rating, whatever the heck.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
That means, and a two point conversion to the few conversion.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
But I tell you that, I mean, we know he's
going to be He's not the starter, he's not the
second team. But as a third quarterback. He has come
a long way this preseason. They obviously have something they
like about him.
Speaker 4 (30:43):
You know what.
Speaker 5 (30:43):
I remember that, Uh, Steve Smith had made to mention
in the first game about he's waiting for Uber, talking
about he needs to get the ball out of his
hands a lot quicker.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
Today, he was not waiting for Uber.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (30:55):
He threw the ball on time. He got the ball
out very, very quickly. He was heads up, and when
he had to scramble, he scrambled, and when he had
to take the sack, took the sack.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
And so from the.
Speaker 5 (31:06):
Standpoint, I thought he played a exceptionally well. And the
accuracy that he displayed out there and the confidence that
he displayed, you know, it's night and day from the
first game that we saw to this game right here.
And so he's a guy that if he doesn't make
this team, you watch out. Somebody's gonna pull up that
young man because he's gonna make somebody see.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
Yeah. Today, a good pocket presence too. A couple of times.
Speaker 6 (31:30):
Yes, he throws to Terres Marshall. He got blown up afterwards,
but he stood in there and delivered the throw.
Speaker 4 (31:35):
Yeah, And that was another thing.
Speaker 5 (31:37):
I mean and when he when he got hit, he
got up rooting for what happened downfield, and he was so.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Excited Marshall scored a touchdown. He's like fighting exactly, and
that's what.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
You want to go ahead and see.
Speaker 5 (31:50):
And so I thought, to your point, Brett, I thought
he played exceptionally well, and I thought it was a
leap years of light years ahead of what it was
the very first game.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
It's just I mean, you're the one guy sitting here
at the table that can tell us the difference with
the college game in the NFL game. You always hear
speed is the first differentiator.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
Yeah, because speed kills and quarterbacks today, since cornerbacks and
safeties is so good at covering, they have to be
able to throw a man open. I mean, put the
place the ball on the left, on the right, up, high, down, low.
You got to be able to do that stuff, and
you got to be able to do it right now.
(32:30):
And so from that standpoint, it's not like the high
school or college game where sometimes you have a lesser athlete.
Everybody in the National Football League, even on the practice squads,
can play football. And it was super duper stars in
high school and super duperstars. In college, everybody can play.
That's from that standpoint, So the game gets really accelerated
(32:51):
and you got to know what you're doing, and the
academics now help you to know where people are going
to be football wise, as opposed to you can rely
sometimes with athletics. Athletically in college and in high school.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
We will come back. We will hear from head coach
Dave Canalis. To stay with us. You're listening to Panthers
Football presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Back to the Panthers postgame Show presuming by Southern Star.
Unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of
the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
And Welcome back to the Panthers postgame show presented by
Southern Star. As the Guy just told you, an official
bourbon of the Carolina Panthers, celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas.
Let's head back to Buffalo. We're a Jim, Kevin and
Curtin have caught up with the head coach.
Speaker 11 (33:36):
Hi, guys, and welcome back to Buffalo. We're joined by
the head coach, Dave Canalis. Now following this Panthers final
preseason game in a victory thirty one to twenty six
began with the starters with an opening drive and a
touchdown there. So we'll start with that, Coach, just what
you saw from the offense and the defense for that matter,
as far as when the starters were out there looked
like a by large mission accomplished in a lot of ways.
Speaker 9 (33:56):
Yeah, I loved what came out of that. You know,
first drive was just the uh, just the nature of
our attack, you know, the run game mixed in with
moving the pocket, and then just seeing Bryce extend plays,
you know, taking some some clean completions, but then extending
plays in those critical situations, especially like on a fourth down.
But the carryover from camp, the emphasis on the second
(34:17):
play after the first playing guys like responding with energy,
finding space and working for him really came alive, And
I thought gave us a chance to get down there
to take advantage of the touchdown.
Speaker 10 (34:28):
Hey, coach, Kirk Coleman here, and I'll say this, and
you know, I always give you one thing and I
give you the other. I thought offensively, coming out right
there with twelve play drive eighty five yards, Bryce six
for eight looked really clean.
Speaker 7 (34:39):
He looked confident. Even on the first play.
Speaker 10 (34:40):
I saw him make a check at the line of scrimmage,
and he was just kind of just surveying what the
defense was given him and putting the offense in the
right position. He seemed just so ready to go play
some ball, and then he improvised when he had to
and as wide receivers got open when they needed to.
So I really will say, great job. It looked at
like a really nice product, and I can tell that
you this is what you guys have been waiting for
(35:02):
and looking forward to. On the flip side of this
is where my question lies. Yeah, fifteen plays sixty one
yards for the defense. Now is this what you kind
of were expecting with the first kind of dress rehearsal
for them? Do you want to say they needed you know, what,
what did you see out of that drive for the defense?
And where do you see some areas where they can
kind of improve?
Speaker 9 (35:18):
Well, I certainly want less in the run game, so
that kind of started there. I thought, you know, just
defensively today, you know, we gave up too many yards.
The line of scrimmage was on our side of it,
So just doing a better job of establishing the line
of scrimmage. But I thought, you know, defensively, you know,
really came down to tackling on the perimeter that some
of those plays really got extended. They you know, attacked
our corners outside and made some made some completions and
(35:40):
had some conversions on that first drive, you know, and
certainly you know, just trying to look for that production
from the edge rush, you know, just getting guys to
see who's gonna be able to push the pocket and
who's gonna affect the quarterback within the normal timing of
the pass play. So some things we can definitely work on.
But you know, part of me also was like happy
that they were out there to be able to tap
(36:00):
into their fitness level, see the conditioning, let them know
that you guys are fit, you guys can handle full drives.
We're ready to go. And that was kind of the
mentality of it too. You know, It's like, you know,
you get a three and out super fired up, but
at the same time, when plays wind drives do extend,
it was really good to just get that work.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Hey, coach, it's Kevin. I'd find me meech in the
hotel yesterday in person, and you know, for me, in
my looking at this product today, it seemed like the
culmination of all the things that you've been saying about camp,
all the work that had gone in the leadership, the
different things that there was an urgency with having these
starters that were in there a focus. It felt different
(36:39):
than a regular preseason game. And it has to, I think,
go a lot to the culture that you're building there.
I guess talk about what you saw from the guys
that might have been a little different on this sideline
than from the previous two preseason games, and how much
the older players that they're getting dialed into this game
that they helped lead those guys in the second half
and staying keeping that sideline and two and guys talking
(37:01):
and nobody's back there having a good time. It's about business.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
Yeah, this is a very serious group.
Speaker 7 (37:06):
They're really focused.
Speaker 9 (37:07):
I've kind of learned that about them, you know, and
and some groups have a little bit are a little
more lively, you know, and on the field in particular,
and the locker room, you know, in the team meetings,
they do a great job of mixing it up and
connecting with each other. But it seems like a pretty
focused and serious group as we're on the field, and
I was excited to kind of see what that looked like,
you know, just prepping for the game, the pregame, what
(37:27):
does the locker room feel like? And then what does
a sideline feel like? You know, so you know the
things that they responded well with. Was you talk about
a culmination, right, just improving in terms of penalties, you know,
I think we had a few, but you know, certainly
we're not in the in the tens. How we were,
you know, a couple of weeks ago, and so saw
that improvement, and that talks about a lot of like
the depth players, the young guys who are just playing
(37:49):
together and doing that.
Speaker 7 (37:50):
So I was pleased.
Speaker 9 (37:51):
There no turnovers, you know, as far as the ball,
you know, really didn't see the ball in peril much
from an offensive standpoint. Would love to have seen more
on trying to get the ball out, attempts, punching, those
types of things. From a defensive standpoint, but if you
can get to zero, you know, and you can, then
it turns into explosive plays. We picked up a couple
on offense, and then defensively, I think we might have
(38:13):
let out a few.
Speaker 12 (38:13):
I can't.
Speaker 9 (38:13):
I don't have the exact stats on that, but it
just didn't feel like a huge game where we were
giving up big explosive plays on the regular and we
took advantage of some of ours. So a lot of
growth in that regard, and really just really love this group,
you know, and really had a chance to thank the guys.
As we know we have to make a bunch of
tough decisions in the next few days. But I've just
(38:34):
been filled with gratitude over the last couple of days
for a group of men that go out there with
the vulnerability to say, I'm going to go out there,
make some mistakes, do some things well, get it fixed,
come back and do it again. And I just really
saw no quid out of this group.
Speaker 11 (38:47):
A lot of players are going to make that roster
decision tough for you and the staff out there, Coach,
but enjoyed watching the game today. Thanks so much for
your time. Thank you all right, coach, Dave Canalis there
and again roster cutcher do by tuesday Panthers win in Buffalo,
already won twenty six. We set it back to Charlotte
again with Brett, Mike and.
Speaker 7 (39:03):
Eugene all Right.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Certainly a positive guy, guys, absolutely, I mean, you love
his energy and obviously that's one of the reasons, you know,
why he was hired.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
You no, you know, he mentioned about conditioning and seeing
the guys in condition, what is it going to look like?
And he's happy with the performance. He's not happy with what
he saw. Defensively, he says, we need to stop to run,
but he's realistic with what he saw. And so from
that standpoint, I'm saying, Okay, coach, you got it going on, dude,
all right, good, you got some good stuff that you know.
(39:34):
If I'm a player and I'm looking at and hearing
him talk, I'm going, okay, when I'm thinking, we're not
that far off. We're closer than what we think. We're
closer than what we that maybe our practices are showing
what I feel.
Speaker 6 (39:49):
And I think just a dovetail on that. I think
it's you know, we said this at the very beginning.
It's clear that there's a well thought out plan and
it's being executed now. It may not be, you know,
earlier two games, it might not have been where they
wanted it to be, but you're starting to see things
come together how they wanted to come together exactly.
Speaker 5 (40:08):
And I'm well, I'm excited for the first game. I'm
excited and I can't. I couldn't say that, you know,
based on what I saw in the first peace I'm like,
oh man, but I'm excited from what I saw today,
I'm in a different mood, and I think that most
pat of fans are going to be in a different
mood as they wait the season opener this year.
Speaker 4 (40:31):
And I'm excited.
Speaker 6 (40:33):
I think the biggest thing going into the season, right,
I mean, last year, there was a kind of a
pall over things, right, I mean, towards the end of
the year, the team wasn't going anywhere, you know, it
just was a funk. And I think the biggest thing
that they've been able to do in this training camp
is turn that around. And not so much outside the building,
(40:54):
but inside the building. It seems like there's a lot
of good enthusiasm. Obviously we heard that from Jordan Matthews.
You heard what and I love what coach Canall said
about this team. Yet when they when they when they're
together locker room, yes they're having fun. But we're on
the field, they're serious and they're focused.
Speaker 5 (41:09):
In the place that they do are our routine plays,
plays always come down and you gotta beat that guy
that's ahead of you. It always comes down to that,
not that I trick you. Yeah, if I trick you, okay, yeah,
I got over you. But you're not gonna trick everybody
in the National Football League. It comes down to Terrace
Marshall breaking two tackles, getting in for a test stolen.
(41:30):
It counts on that ikey Ikuano dogging his guy, buying
time for Bryce to go ahead and beat a guy,
beat it, beat an alignment and throw the ball down
the field. That's what football comes down to. Individual efforts
that guys are doing anything. And I'm like I said
once again, I'm I'm excited. I'm excited for what I
saw offensively today because defensively, I think that's what we're
(41:53):
really strong at.
Speaker 6 (41:54):
And you have to have a bag of tricks, right,
But if you're relying on those bag of tricks to
being your offense and.
Speaker 4 (41:58):
You can't trouble.
Speaker 6 (42:00):
Yeah, it's like the bag of tricks is there to
compliment something that's going well and just throw a wrinkle
for the other team to make them either think about
something or it's something you've seen that exposes the weakness exactly.
Speaker 4 (42:12):
That's that's it's totally different when you.
Speaker 12 (42:13):
Will yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Coach always like and coaches always like to have something
to coach on exactly. They're not happy if everything's perfect
when we come back ball game, Well, they still wanted
something to harp on when we come back to stats.
Speaker 4 (42:29):
From today's game.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
This is the Carolina Fathers Radio Network Welcome Back Panthers
postgame show presented by Southern Star, an official bourbon of
the Carolina Panthers, celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas. Panthers
win their final exhibition game thirty one, twenty six over
the Buffalo Bills and now get ready to take on
(42:51):
the New Orleans Saints two weeks from tomorrow. Let's take
a look at some of the stats from today's ball game.
Bryce Young did play, did play one series led the
Panthers to a touchdown six of eight seventy yards passing
one touchdown pass a Jack Plumber wrapped up the preseason.
A lot of time played in this preseason. It looked
pretty good today. Twenty one to twenty nine, two hundred
(43:12):
and seventy eight yards and two touchdowns from a rushing standpoint.
Jaden Sheridan, the guy that the Panthers brought back in
this week thirteen carries thirty five yards himself, Mark had
Mister Boone had four carries for twenty yards. He's been
carrying the bulk of the running back load during this preseason.
(43:33):
He had one touchdown. Chuba Hubbard played three carries fifteen yards.
Miles Sanders saw his first action of the preseason. He
had three carries for six yards. In the receiving department,
Horsted had two catches for sixty three yards, Cocher had
three for fifty five at a touchdown. Marshall had three
for thirty nine and a touchdown. Sheridan had two catches
(43:54):
for thirty two yards. Moore had two for twenty eight.
Matthews had three for twenty one and a touchdown. Hollister
had two catches for fourteen yards as Smith. Marsette had
two for eleven yards. And there were a bunch of
other guys that had one catch. What did you say,
Mike Cowpedy, Different guys had one seventeen. I believe seventeen
(44:15):
the receivers had a catch today, And as you know,
that number will change because there won't be seventeen receivers
on the roster. Yeah, after Tuesday, coming up, what.
Speaker 6 (44:24):
You're doing unless you're doing a lot of like tackle
and guard eligible play.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
Well, that's right, exactly. Sacks. There were three sacks for
the Panthers today. Cam Gill had one, DJ Johnson had one,
and there was a sacks split between Luigi Voulaye and
Junior A Hoo. What do you got from a team standpoint, Mike, Well,
we see a lot of improvement over last week.
Speaker 6 (44:46):
I remember, you know one of our big numbers that
we like to talk about is that third down. Yeah,
sixty one percent gene eighth of thirteen for the Panthers. Now,
the Bills, fortunately, I mean unfortunately for the Panthers, good
for them, they were fifty eight percent, seven of twelve.
So you'd like to that number drop. But at least offensively,
the Panthers were over sixty percent on that third which
means they were extending drives.
Speaker 5 (45:05):
Yeah, extending the drive and they look good too, and
that's what you that's what you want. They weren't even
so intrepid and so daring that there was a third
down and one situation and they went for it deep
down the field, knowing that on fourth down they could
pick up the first down because they were powerful and
explosive offensive line that is off the ball and moving
(45:25):
that defensive line back of the yard, back of the
yard have to let their running back go in and
and search it out to go in pick up a
first down.
Speaker 4 (45:34):
It was some really good football today.
Speaker 6 (45:35):
Yeah, it was fun to watch, no doubt about that
fourth down just because Eugenis mentioned two or four to
fifty percent the Bill did not try a fourth down try.
I think total yards Panthers averaged six point four yards
per offensive play, so four hundred and fourteen total yards
against three to twenty. And a lot of that came
in the passing game. Three hundred and forty yards in
the air. Wow, eight point seven yards per passing play.
Speaker 5 (45:59):
They were just explosive. I mean, and you talked about Plumber.
Plumber played extremely well. I know his family is probably
excited about it and his prospects and chances to go
ahead and make a make a roster NFL roster. Uh
and maybe you know who knows, maybe as a second
quarterback you never even know this this game is really precarious.
Speaker 4 (46:17):
But he played extremely well.
Speaker 5 (46:19):
And then to see Bryce Young for the first time,
to look chrisp and solid, you know, man, it just
it just looked good.
Speaker 4 (46:29):
It really did. It just looked good. Well, it loved it.
Speaker 6 (46:32):
And to prove that point, the Panthers cut their penalties
and half from last week wow over ten I think
last week, right five this week. But it was two
in the first half. So two in the first half,
three in the second half. So you can live with
five or less penalties. You can live with that, you
can you can definitely live with that. Panthers also red
zone efficiency three for three bad one hundred percent.
Speaker 4 (46:49):
That's what you want.
Speaker 6 (46:50):
Seventy five percent for the Bills. Time possession almost was
closed twenty nine twenty for the Panthers, thirty forty for
the Bills.
Speaker 5 (46:58):
But this game felt as if the Panthers control the
narrative the entire time, right, That's what it felt like, Brett.
Speaker 6 (47:05):
And they were to make the right plays in the
in the two minute, at the end of the two minute, in.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
The second half, at the end of the game, to is.
Speaker 4 (47:13):
It it.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
Get a great little drive at the end of the
first half to set up a field goal two, which
is really nice. This injury report brought to you by
a Trim Health. You deserve to live your best life
at Atrium Health is here to help the ones we
know about at this point. Smith Marsett fought the game
with an ankle injury and Gil left the game with
an ankle injury as well. The good news from the
Panthers standpoint forever NFL team standpoint. Two weeks before the
(47:37):
first regular season game. Before we take a break, let's
paut ten seconds for station identification on the Carolina Panthers
radio network. We would come back final thoughts from Jim,
Kevin and Kurt.
Speaker 4 (47:48):
Stay with us.
Speaker 2 (47:49):
You're listened to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (47:52):
Back to Brett McMillan with more of the Panthers postgame
show presee by Southern Star official bourbon of the Carolina
Panthers celebrate the spirit up in Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (48:08):
Well, now the Panthers turn their attention to New Orleans.
Two weeks from tomorrow. The Panthers opened their regular season
on the road against the Saints. Before we do that,
let's head back to Buffalo and get the final thoughts
from Jim, Kevin and Kurt.
Speaker 11 (48:21):
Panthers pick up a win in Buffalo to close out
the preseason and for a team that had not won
in this preseason, had only won two games last season.
Any kind of a win sounds good, looked good doing it.
Four hundred and fourteen yards of total net yards in
this game. Starters played and the offense comes out and
rolls out in eighty five yards scoring drive touchdown pass
to Jordan Matthews from Bryce Young, who went six out
(48:42):
of eight for seventy yards. Backup quarterback Jack Plumber also
played well, twenty one out of twenty nine two hundred
and seventy eight yards, two touchdowns. Panthers aired it out
quite a bit in this game, taking some deep shots
down the field. Played effectively for the most part. On defense,
always some things that could be approved on both sides
of the football. But to Kurt and Kevin, as we
look at the way they closed out this preseason, you
(49:04):
got to feel good and some positive vibes coming out
of this one.
Speaker 10 (49:07):
Kurt, Yeah, absolutely, I'm going to re rehash what I
said about Sir Dave Brace forward marginal gains. This team
came out here with an opportunity to have the starters
really simulate what it would look like in Week one.
They went down the field. Brice went six for eight
seventy yards. One touchdown to Jordan Matthews. Next team, next
(49:28):
group came back out and Jordan or Jack Plumber went
twenty one for twenty nine two and seventy yards two touchdowns.
The offense looked consistent. They looked like there was chemistry,
They looked like they were on time. I mean everything
from start to finish, it looked like a really good product. Defensively,
I mean, I think consistently they have been the glue
(49:48):
to this team and they will be. I think, especially
through the first few games. They have to be the
catalyst to be able to give our offense as many
opportunities as possible to score points, and I think they
will be. I loved what Shaq said, I loved what
Jordan Fuller said. Yes, was it good to get out there?
Speaker 7 (50:02):
Yes? Was this what we really wanted to look like?
Speaker 10 (50:04):
No, we have things that we have to go out
there and correct, and I know and I believe they will.
Speaker 7 (50:08):
And then finally is this.
Speaker 10 (50:09):
This team knows that they are far from perfect, and
you don't have to be perfect to get the wins.
But what you have to do is be consistent in
who you are and know what you want to do
enter in every single game, and I think Canalys is
moving this team in the right direction. I'm excited. I
am very optimistic, but I am realistic. This team has
ways to go if they want to continue to make
it to the playoffs. But it starts with game one,
(50:30):
week one down in New Orleans, and.
Speaker 3 (50:32):
I would say listen with this group. What we saw
collectively through the preseason is you can see that leadership
really starting to build within the team, the culture, the
chemistry because as they've moved along, Yes, today was the
final dress rehearsal and wasn't every starter, but most of
them were out there for the Carolina Panthers, and you
(50:53):
saw it was a different tone when they got on
the field to warm up. When they're on the sideline,
it's different than other preseason games. When I down there
and to see these guys with that amount of focus
and knowing when to flip that switch, it's just great
for all the younger players to see that that how
important this is to get a final dress rehearsal before
you head into the season. I think it just bodes
(51:13):
well for the Carolina Panthers. As this season goes on,
there will be ups and downs. They're still working on
the talent overall on this roster, but some of the
pieces that they brought in have not only shown that
they're valuable on the field production wise, but also within
does it fit the culture that coach Canalis wants to have?
And so far, so good. This team's really performed well
(51:34):
today and it was a good note to go out on.
Speaker 11 (51:36):
Yeah, lots of positives to take away from this one
and making a tough on the coaching staff to probably
make some of these roster decisions as well. Guys, thank
you both, and thanks for our crew. Harold Hamrick our
technical director, Jason Hutchinson, our game site engineer. Back in
Charlotte with Wendell Black and David Y's Matt Hogan and
Byban Putman, Amy Martin, our broadcast manager, Eric Filman, our
Affiliates manager Sharon Thorsland on the sidelines and David Langton,
(51:58):
our executive producer. Is the Panthers win in Buffalo thirty
one twenty six. Back to Charlotte now with Brett, Mike
and Eugene.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
All Right, thanks lot, guys, appreciate it. SAFF travels back
home and when we return we'll have our final three
and outs. You're listening to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (52:14):
The Panthers postgame show continues. Pre see by Southern Star
unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of
the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
The preseason is in the books. Yeay, just thinking a
couple of years will only be two preseason games, you right,
absolutely right, you that's where we're headed later on, that's
where we're headed.
Speaker 4 (52:39):
Ye we are.
Speaker 2 (52:40):
And the Panthers wrapped up the preseason with a field
good thirty one to twenty six win over the Buffalo Bills.
And now they well, first of all, the coaches turn
their attention on cutdown Day, which is by Tuesday, getting
out of fifty three. They're gonna be watching the waiver wires,
the coaches and the Dan Morgan and staff, you see
if there's some players out there they'd like to add
to the roster. And then they turned their attention towards
(53:02):
New Orleans too.
Speaker 4 (53:03):
I forget practice squad.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Yeah, two weeks from tomorrow, so a lot of work
to be done before the Saints game in New Orleans.
But then in the meantime, get Eugene and Mike's thoughts
on the way things went this preseason and what lies
ahead for this team, EUGENI your final three and out.
Speaker 5 (53:22):
So I've been harping on third down percentage. In the
last couple of games, we were some about twenty percent.
I think that was Wolfo. Today we were sixty one
point five. I'm going to round up and say sixty
two percent. That's outstanding. So that's what I think we
need to be to be the offensive juggernaut. We obviously
(53:42):
have the weapons. Offensive line was stellar. Two on defense,
I think today what we saw with the defensive front.
Speaker 4 (53:52):
On the defense, I think that was an anomaly.
Speaker 5 (53:55):
They've been playing really good football ever since this preseas
and so from that standpoint, maybe some generous to that,
but uh, I think that that group is going to
be intact, and so I'm looking forward to that. And
then I need to go to special teams. Smith Marsett
is special. There's something about him when he when he
(54:18):
handles it kind of reminds me Steve Smith. Gets Steve
Smith the ball in hand, he about to put work in,
you know. And so from that standpoint, and I know
he may he suffered them maybe a little ankle injury,
I think he clearly makes his team, but I think
he's one of the biggest difference makers special teams wise,
and so hopefully he's back in the mix.
Speaker 6 (54:37):
Mike, all right, I am not pessimistic. I am optimistic
because there's plenty to be realistic about. I think what
that means is there's a uh maybe the first time
uh in a little bit with there's a lot of optimism.
Eugene really hit all the points right there, because this
thing is moving in the right direction. Now, that's not
to say this team's gonna make I can't tell you
(54:58):
that right now what the team's gonna to win total wise,
everybody likes to ask that in the next two weeks
of me, like how many I have no idea right now.
Speaker 2 (55:05):
But what I do know is that it looks like
there's a plan in place.
Speaker 6 (55:07):
They're working the plan, and the things moving in the
right direction.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
All right, Yeah is that three? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (55:15):
Because it was pistic optimistic, Yeah, realistic. I'm not pessimistic.
I am optimistic, but I am also realistic.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
Okay, Well, I'm thinking about this offense watching today, and
we always talk about the offense is a unit, especially
the offensive line, that really has to have the camaraderie
they have to be thinking as one and they need
to keep building that. We saw today some signs that
is there and the receivers and the quarterback have to
be on the same wavelength and they really need to
keep building that over the next couple of weeks. In practice,
(55:47):
they need to keep emphasized to keep it clean. This
just team just went through the three games of the
preseason no turnovers. It reduced keep reducing the penalties, which
they were able to do today, but keep it clean.
That's a huge difference maker, as we all know, once
you get into the regular season, and this is something
that I think Dave Canalys is emphasized. It is brought
(56:09):
to this team half fun. You're playing a game. This
is something you get to do, you don't have to do,
and half fun. A lot of people would give anything
to be in these guys' shoes. They put in a
lot of work. I understand that. But go out there
and have fun. Regular season's coming. Half fun. Enjoy what
(56:32):
you're doing. Next game will be two weeks from tomorrow.
