Speaker 1 (00:03):
No to Mike Pachico with the Panthers postgame show precemic
by Southern Star unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate
the spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
But we're about two weeks away, a little two weeks
away from Halloween. Today it was like a nightmare on
Ring Road and landover Maryland. Goodness, Wow, Panthers falling in
this one forty to seven. The Commander's now improved to
five and two. Panthers at one and six. You know,
there was some some trend lines that we've kind of
(00:38):
talked about, and I know we'll go over them again
today that have been kind of recurring themes. But I
think maybe the biggest takeaway from this game started in
that first offensive series. You know, the Panthers were marching
down the field, they're in plus territory, looking like they
had control of the game, and then it looked like
Andy Dalton kind of sped himself up a little bit.
(01:00):
You got a little bit of pressure on that screenplay,
and then Dante Fowler picks up, picks it off and
goes sixty seven yards for the touchdown return. And I
think the message I was thinking about throughout the game
was you know, the team already came in with a
slim margin of error, and you know you start off
with a big deficit like that, and it just kind
of reinforces that oh here we go again mentality.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
If there ever was a play that signified that it's
not your day to day, yeah, I think that sixty
seven yard test down by Fowler off the screen trying
to get the ball of Santas who actually initially blocks
and then turns, but the pressure is getting on the quarterback.
The ball just sells by him and he never really
sees the ball. He never sees it. And now Filer
(01:43):
takes it down the field and Andy don't tried, but
he just like leaped over him and just kept running
down the field. And I sat there as I'm watching
the game, and I'm thinking to myself, I'm going, man,
how demoralizing is that? Because if you're in, don't forget
your last pass was an interception. It was an interception.
(02:05):
And now as a quarterback you can't help but go,
oh no, not again, not again. I thought we were
gonna get out of that series with maybe just punting
the ball and not being because here it is a
screen is a safe play. It's a very very safe play.
Typically you get the defensive lineman, they're rushing the quarterback,
(02:26):
and then you jumping that ball right behind them to
the running back. But in this case, it just seems
like nothing went well at all, and the and the
intended receiver was a guy winning the opposite uniform, and
so it started downhill, and I really believe that we
never recovered. Defensively, we held them to three points next,
(02:50):
but other than that, I think we just never ever recovered.
And it was seeing how the onslaughts started to happen
in that first half. I was like, wow, they could
put like thirty something points on us in the first half.
The way they're playing his ball, in the way we
are playing.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
And this is a team offensively, and before we get
into you know, Jade Daniels and his injury, this is
a team that came in Geane tied for the second
fewest punts coming into Week seven in NFL history. I
think they had was like six punts or something like that.
Panthers only forced essentially one punt in this game, and
(03:29):
that was early on. And then I don't know if
you I mean this is awful because you don't ever
want to see a player get hurt. But Jane Daniels
goes out after he had a big first series. He
had that big long run, which we think is where
he kind of got that rib injury, that exactly forty
six yard run, because he looked like he got folded them.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Folded up.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
And this is no disrespect to Marcus Mariota, but you think, okay,
maybe you know, because Jane Daniels essentially a quarterback and
a running back, he's too.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
He's a two for one package, but so is Mariona
Well and then yeah, well.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
He started off like zero for three and then he
started to you know, looked like he was Tom Brady
back there.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
But here's the thing. I thought that the Commanders did well.
They established a run, They ran the ball extremely well,
and that seemed to be don't forget the week prior.
They ran the ball only fifty two yards.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
Dude, I know, fifty two yards.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Fifty two yards.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
So you think that hey, as a as a defense,
or we can get right on the Commanders, you know,
fifty two yards Russians, we can hold him to maybe
eighty yards, seventy yards somewhere around there, and we're in
this game that was not the case.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
And when Robinson got the ball, Robinson.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Looked a lot like Derrick Henry the way he's running
through people, and the offensive line of the Commanders quite
frankly was pushing that defensive line back. I mean, he's
Robinson is getting touched by the linebackers, the safety, not
the defensive lineman. Initially, and Saw I thought, what the
Commanders did well is they established to run early, and
(05:07):
I knew, wow, if they're able to run and move
the ball down and only put three points on the
board but control the clock, they're gonna be able to
uh to go ahead. And if they ever put some
points on the board, they're gonna make it really difficult
for the Carolina Panthers because they're rushing the ball so
so well. And we were just, I don't know, we
were just getting pushed off the line scrimmage. We just
(05:29):
there's no way to say it.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
And usually when you look at you know, the you
know four or five areas that you really need to
win in two of those or the offensive line of
the defensive line. And this week the offensive line didn't
have as good a push as they had last week.
You know, obviously it's a different opponent. Juba Hubbard had
fifty two yards three point one yards will carried, which is,
you know, significantly lower than what he's been used to,
(05:51):
but he was still able to get some some traction there.
And Miles Sanders was more of a dual threat than
maybe we've seen.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
And then what we saw also with the ball went
laterally again. We saw that ball going out to the
side and not downfield. And maybe it was because off
the two interceptions that we saw. One was a testdown
and the other one when Dalton was throwing that it
looks like he's throwing a deep dig like which is
a fifteen yard deep end, eighteen yard deep end. It
(06:18):
looks like the receiver stopped running. It looks like everything
abody was a slow motion.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
But the.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Commanders and so I see why you would limit balls
being thrown down a shield, because now you're trying to play,
you're trying to make this game a longer game. I
was hoping we were run the ball a little bit more.
I thought we may be able to get some traction.
But once again the commanders, they dedicated eight people to
the line of scrimmage and said, all right, we dare
(06:46):
you to run. We want you to pass the ball.
We dare to run, we want you to throw the ball.
And they were able to be successful making us throw it.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Well, then it became essentially a game of keep away.
I mean, the two biggest plays I think in the
first half. One we've already mentioned was the was the
interception by Dante Fowler, the sixty seven yard return. But
then it was in the Panthers' fifth offensive series, they
went for it, they lost the ball on downs, it
was down seventeen to nothing, and then Washington marches down.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
You're talking about that fourth and one winning fourth one.
Speaker 5 (07:19):
Yeah, I don't disagree with the call.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
I'm not saying that, but I'm just saying that was
a key point in the game where if maybe you
recover and get points on that drive, or you score
not you're only down if it's seventeen to seven, that's
a different game than being down seventeen to nothing.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
And then they go down and get a field and.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Who's a guy who makes the play?
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Fouler Follower shoots a gap inside Ian Thomas, trying to
block him from the inside. He doesn't get everything on him,
and he messed the running back in the backfield as
he's handing off the ball as the running back is
getting the ball.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
That is incredible timing.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
But that is also because he was lined up head
up almost on on Ian Thomas and then he schools
to his inside, so I know he's blissing that gap
and somebody has somebody's on the outside of him to
take care of the edge, and he was followed was
back there. Fowler had a good day. He had a
very good day if you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
It, he sure did. Wow, had a big, big sack
in this games.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
And did you see the exuberants and the excitement that
Frankie Loewell after he had a sack, Like everybody wants
to do well against their former team, they do.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Yeah, it's you know, it's one of those things where,
I mean, you can't avoid it. It's gonna happen, but
you just hope that you mitigated as much as possible.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
And it's not a big play.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
But again, even though it was, it was early enough
in the game that that even took a little bit
of momentum out of the Panthers.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
We never ever ever got settled. We never got settled
as an offense. And then defensively. We never ever got
settled when we we on that very first series when
they marched all the way down the field and then
I think it was maybe Wooten he gets the he
stops that third down play. Now they gotta kick a
(08:59):
field goal. I said, Okay, we got some tracks, we
got something going on. But after that, there was really
nothing going on. They really controlled the clock and they
control the line of scrimmage, and doing both those things,
they were able to go ahead and march down the
field and make it very difficult for the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
I didn't think we were going to be able to score.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
No, it was I mean, I started to look up
some of the past shoutouts, and you know, I stopped
when the Panthers scored. But you know, the closest I
think to this game was probably the you'll remember this
game in two thousand and two when Panthers lost her
at home forty one to nothing to Atlanta, and earlier
in the year actually was on today today's anniversary, two
(09:40):
thousand and two, Panthers lost thirty to nothing at Atlanta
at Atlanta seventy one points to Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
That year, man, And who I think, who was really prevalent.
Was Julio Jones. I think he was. I think Julio
Jones was the guy maybe, or Roddy White. What in
the back of that day with Ryan they just had it.
They just Maddy Ice, They just had They just had
a really good team. But here it is, we got
(10:06):
a team that's floundering. We there was I know there's
backup guys that's in there playing different roles. We didn't
control the edge, and we didn't take care of the edge.
The quarterbacks outside the pocket too many times. The very
first play on Daniels, we have the outside I think
(10:27):
with number forty five on our team, I forget its name,
just but we have him on the edge and Daniels
yes and yes, and Daniels gets outside and I'm like, oh, dude,
you got the edge. You gotta force them back in.
If you force them back in, he's tackled. He's not
tackled because he's outside because the playfake four hates and
(10:49):
he's thicking the balls going to his right, and so
he's gonna go down to line the scrimmage. But if
he takes care of the edge, it's a different story.
You don't have that big run by Daniels and getting
that crowd all high up. And so once again I
saw edge control EDGs being a problem. And if we've
been talking about that for the entire you know, seasons
(11:10):
so far, Gotta control the edges, Gotta control the edges.
And once again it bit us in the back because
Daniel's very first play, he goes down there forty seven yards.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Now, is this something that is.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
I mean, is this something Obviously they're working on it,
so I don't want to suggest that they're not working
on it. But are these things that like are fixable?
Is it like a combination of doing more drills, you know,
or is it you.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Do your job cheap.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
We've always said if you got BCR bootleg container reverse,
if you got edge control, that's your job. Before you
can help me across the field, you got to take
care of your job. You got to make sure that
that ball, and particularly with the red quarterback read option,
when the quarterback fixed that ball in the real hard
he's looking at the edge guy to see if he
folds in, then follow the running back.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
If he folds in, he pulls ball out and he
keeps it.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
So you got to be really, really disciplined and not
try to make a play across the field when it's
not your play. Don't make plays when it's not your place.
The plays that come to you, those are the players
you're supposed to make, your responsibility, those are the players
you're supposed to make. Or you push it back to you,
to your to your help. And when we're not doing that,
that's when we're doing ourselves in disservice. So is that
(12:21):
a matter of like we got to practice them more. No,
we're all pros.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
We all know that.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
You know that in high school, you know it in
Pop Warner. You know it in high school, you know
it in college, and you know it in the pros.
You have a gap. It's as signed to you take
care of your business first before you try to help
somebody else.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
And it's so tempting, Oh oh things are going well.
It's so tempting to try and do more than what
you but just do.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
What you need to do.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
And I get it. I get it. Hang, I'm not here,
you know, and I'm not trying to dog. I get it.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
Because you're like, oh, you think the ball your food
on the place, because you think the ball is inside
and it's not. The ball's coming right at you, but
you don't see it because guess what your eyes are
inside and not on your assignment on the outside.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
All right, let's pause ten seconds right now for stations
to identify themselves here on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network,
and you are listening to the Southern Star postgame Show,
the Carolina Panthers losing today hereby score of forty two
to seven. Eugene Robinson and I have more to come here.
We have scoreboard to get to. Highlights, of course, are
(13:22):
exclusive interviews and a whole lot more, including our Honda Player,
our hardest working player of the game. We'll get to

of the game. We'll get to that as well as
we move along here on the Southern Starbourban postgame Show
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network. We welcome back in
(13:44):

(14:07):
Do you have two games still going on as our
game has just wrapped up? The La Rams in action
at home against the Las Vegas Raiders right now, it's
the Rams twenty to fifteen with about minute thirty nine
to go. Looks like Kansas City pretty much on their
way to win here twenty one to twelve at San Francisco,
(14:28):
but still four to fifty one in that game, so
something crazy could still happen in that game, but that
one's still ongoing. Earlier today in Wembley Stadium, Jacksonville put
it to New England thirty two to sixteen. We'll talk
about how much the Commanders ran against the Panthers in
this game, but the Jaguars thirty nine rushes one hundred
(14:48):
and seventy one yards on the ground against New England
in Wembley Stadium, and at one point they had seventeen
straight runs.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Wow, I don't care what you say.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
When you run able to run the ball, you're able
to control the flow of the game and dictate so much.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Tank Bigsby twenty six carries one hundred and eighteen yards
on the ground for the Jags with two touchdowns. Hey,
Drake May for the Patriots, of course, you know, Charlie
Kid went to Maris Park twenty six of thirty seven,
completed seventy percent of his passes, two hundred and seventy
six yards, two touchdowns, and more importantly for him, no interception.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
That's good.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
So that's good for him.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Seattle beats Atlanta in Atlanta thirty four to fourteen. Geno
Smith had two hundred and seven yards in the air,
two touchdowns. Kirk Cousins had a touchdown, two interceptions. Buffalo
takes care of Tennessee thirty four to fourteen at home.
Cincinnati on the road beats Cleveland by a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Joe Burrow fifteen for twenty five hundred and eighty one
yards two touchdowns. Deshaun Watson though one of several I
think three or four quarterbacks went down.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
I heard maybe Achilles.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
I know you very Achilles. I know that just about
eight month eight month injury at least.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Yeah, he was fifteen of seventeen, one hundred and twenty
eight yards passing before he went out in the It
was towards the end of the first half. Green Bay
by two points beats Houston twenty four twenty two. Brand
McManus had a forty five yard field goal as time
expired for green Bay to get the win. At home
Indianapolis over Miami sixteen to ten. Tyler Huntley he was
(16:18):
injured in the third quarter in that game, so another
of the quarterbacks that got hurt today Detroit. They also
had a late Jake Bates goals on that game, forty
four yarder with fifteen seconds to go, so they give
Minnesota their first loss, and Detroit wins that game twenty
thirty one to twenty nine. And Philadelphia wallops the Giants
(16:40):
in the Metalands at MetLife Stadium twenty eight to three.
Jalen Hurts didn't really have to pass a lot ten
of fourteen hundred.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Fourteen yard I hurt Sakuon Barkley.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
At Sakuon Barkley seventeen carries one hundred and seventy six
yards two touchdowns, so they get two touchdowns from Saquon Barkley.
Hurts gives them a touchdown in the air. He's seven
of twenty two on the and gives them two touchdowns
on the ground and.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
I bet you Barkleys like yeah, I told.
Speaker 5 (17:05):
You yea again just like but we talked about.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Especially I don't know that you know, New York is
one of those places where, you know, I think everything
is magnified, right, so even that situation gets and that
was I mean, they was probably talking about that on
sports radio.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
We don't we don't need them.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
Philly can have them this word, but we would be
just fine.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Maybe not, maybe not the Jets.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Speaking of New York, the Jets are in action tonight
at Akrocher Stadium in Pittsburgh taking on the Steelers, the
four and two Steelers against the two and four Jets.
And then another Monday night duo combination Baltimore at Tampa
Bay that'll be in Tampa Bay be that'd be a
really good game. And then the Chargers, trying to go
four and two on the season, they'll take on Arizona
(17:51):
at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. And then that's
the Monday I came and uh yeah, the other that's
the second month in that game, and then the bye
week has Chicago off today four and two and Dallas
three and three, and after that, whooping that Dallas took
last week.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
They probably needed it.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
They need a little sabbatical right now.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
And talk about everything being bigger in New York, I
mean everything is bigger in Texas too.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
And and just the you know, all the eyeballs and
the scrutiny that Dallas Cowboys get, you know, being a
quote unquote America's team. They look when you and when
they don't do well they do and when you're putting
points on Dallas, you can't believe what what what's happening
with it? That's crazy?
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Did you ever because you know in your career obviously,
I mean, Saddle is a big city. But even though
it's it's a top market.
Speaker 5 (18:41):
Like Dallas, Dallas, New York, New York, like Dallas.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
You know, you played Atlanta, you played here, you played
at green Bay and green Bay green Bay has that
regional feel and they have a lot of meatia, but
it's not the same as when you.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Go to It's not like Dallas, not like Dallas, New York.
I mean that's those games become so iconic. Don't forget.
Dallas is the same thing that has on Thanksgiving. That's
the game that everybody says, oh, you play on Thanksgiving.
I know Detroit now plays on Thanksgiving, of course, but
everybody knows the Dallas Cowboys and they would play the
Commanders typically on Thanksgiving. So I'm just saying everybody knows
(19:16):
that franchise. It's well well known, and rightfully so because
they won championships too, so it's not like they haven't
earned it. Yeah, but when they lose sometimes that's magnified.
It's magnified a lot.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Well, before we take a break, I didn't want to
mention today was J. J. Jansen's two hundred and fiftieth
NFL game, so we congratulate him on that, and he
also ties my partner J.
Speaker 5 (19:36):
Robinson at.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
The games.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
Yeah exactly, And so I mean, what a mouse off
for J J. Jansen Persson you're doing at the at
the long snapper. I mean, and not only special teams
account for about twenty eight percent twenty three to twenty
eight percent of a game, and then no more realize
you think about the kicker, the punter, and you think
about the place kicker. Yeah, but this long snapper, that's
(20:02):
that goes unnoticed at all. And if the long snapper
doesn't get the ball back there and on a field
goal within two seconds, less than two seconds, it's typically blocked.
Speaker 4 (20:12):
If he doesn't get it back there.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
On two seconds to the to the punter that that's
to uh to get the ball off, it's typically blocked.
The long snapper has an important job and J. J.
Jansen has been putting the work for a very very
long time doing that yeoman's job of getting the ball
back on kickoffs. I mean I'll kick off on punts
and also on place kicking. And so I applaud him
(20:35):
to the last as long in the industry. And don't forget, uh.
The Panthers had drafted a long snapper about yeah on
the Matt Roe Yeah, and J. J. Janssen beat him out.
I'm a I'm a I'm sorry. I'm a JJ Janson fan,
I really am. And he does a wonderful job, and
big up.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
CU.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Longevity is a big thing, and you need to be
honored by that young man.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
That's that's all standing, and that's such a high leverage.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
You know, that's right, because you know, I mean, unlike
almost any other position, every time he's got the ball
in his hands, or at least eighty percent of the time,
there's something serious on the line, whether it's just getting
points or kicking the getting the ball. Yeah, so it
defensing off. I mean he's kind of an offensive defense.
Speaker 4 (21:16):
Yes, he's that.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
He's at one of those cogs that you need to
have on your team to play extremely well. And he's
been doing it two hundred and fifty games and for
the Carolina Panthers, he's been putting him work all right.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Well, see, we have all of our exclusive interviews to
come Jatavian Sanders, I think we'll be stopping behind the
guys in the boothbi also of Coach Canalis and highlights
coming up next. You're listening to the Panthers Football presented
by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Yes he's still postgame show presently by Southern Star unofficial
bourbon of the Carolina Panthers. Celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 6 (21:50):
So Red Gifts Straight up the Middle, Touchdown, Touchdown.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Carolina Reaction and analysis to today's game with special guests,
highlights and updates from around the league.
Speaker 6 (22:02):
Complete touchdown, right side next to catch touchdown Panther Now
what how about it? Now?
Speaker 1 (22:09):
What no till Mike Pucico with the Panthers postgame show
exclusively on the Carolina Panthers Radio.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
Network alongside Eugene Robinson. I am Mike Pachico. Panther is
falling on the road to the Washington Commanders.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
Forty to seven.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
US take a look back at the highlights as they
were from this game. And Panthers got the ball to
start and they really started moving down the field. They had,
you know, some pretty big games. Miles Sanders had a
twenty eight yard run play, Deontay Johnson had a sixteen
yard player that helped get them into the Commander's territory.
(22:48):
But on the eighth play of the drive, it all
fell apart.
Speaker 6 (22:57):
Three receiver set Coper slot right, shotgun snap pressure, coming
screw pass. He was intercepted by Washington and the Commanders
are gonna run this all the way back for a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
Dante Dowler Junior And you have to really credit follow there.
He disrupted the timing on that play and put himself
in position to make a big plague against the Panthers.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
And we were talking about Sanders never really saw that
saw the ball, and I gotta I'll give Andy Dutton credit.
He tried to make that tackle and it just was
out messed by a by a better athlete to get
down the field, and Paula did a great job of
setting the tipple for that defense.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
So there are a couple series in this game that
I think we're critical junctures. And I think this very
next offensive series for the Panthers was because if they
were able to mount you know, eight nine, ten, Dad
doesn't know how many plays, but if they're able to
mount a scoring drive there, you take that deep end.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
You get it back right here, you get it back right.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
But instead they go three and out there and that
leads to Washington getting an Austin Cyber twenty three yard
field goal. So so now you know you're you're not
even I don't know, six minutes into the game, seven
minutes into the game and you down tend to nothing.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
And don't forget on that that drive too. By the by,
by the Commanders, they held the ball. They had seven
straight runs, so you could tell that the effort was
But then the feedback was, hey, we got to be
a better running team. We don't even ran the ball
fifty two yards. We got to run the ball better.
On the eighth play of that drive where they get
(24:28):
the three points, they throw a screen out to the
side the ball goes loudly, so it's like a run.
So they had an effort saying, look, we're gonna go
ahead and establish a run and move the Panthers off
that ball to get in position. And if we can
make it a long game by making a running game,
we can get it and win this game. And so
they were able to do that. So I saw that
(24:49):
being their strategies, Like they wanted to run the ball,
and they did a great job. And the quarterbacks did
a great job of when they scrambled and they ran
the ball and picked up first out.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
Yeah, Daniel's got forty six yards on the first player
of that drive. Wow, would end up getting hurt on
that play, That's what we believe. And then he came
out with ribs. Although when looking at and I know
ribs could be very I mean I've had some ribs
stuff too, I mean it's very painful, painful, But he
didn't he looked like he he looked like he was
probably a little bit sore, But it didn't look like
it was like overlead.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
Yes it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
It didn't seem like it was overly concerning. And I
think with the game in hand, by putting back me.
Speaker 4 (25:23):
And so, and no'll forget you got Mariota.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Mariota comes into the game and it's like, first of all, everybody,
he's no slouts, dude, I adn't know. He's always been
a really good quarterback who can throw from the pocket.
But talking about somebody who can run, Mariota can run
and he can still run, and we can see that
he can steal. He had like thirty four yards thirty
five yards rushing the ball, and when he scrambled, he
(25:46):
made our defense look kind of really pedestrian, like I mean,
we didn't we didn't look like we were trying to
get to him because he was too fast and so
he did a good job on that one. I'm like, man,
we got to get to this dude and get him
on the ground. But we couldn't, you know.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
And we saw this with with Cam Newton and Derek Anderson.
Is when you have a quarterback that is willing to
put his body on the line and run the ball,
you need to have somebody you better finish the game
or you know, to fill the gap while while you know,
while the starter gets healthy.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
Absolutely you gotta have, particularly if you have a running
quarterback and your system is like that.
Speaker 4 (26:20):
You got to match that with somebody like a PJ.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Walker, oh, who played with the Carolina Pathers, who can
throw the ball, but he can also run. So you
got to have a guy who can run your offense
and and you're not lose anything. That's where Mariota comes in.
And don't forget, Mariota comes with loads of experience.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
Yes, yes he does. He's former Heisman Trophy winner. So
certainly in your words, certainly agreed, no slounge, no sloughs
at all. So the third offensive series, second player of
the Drive, Manuel Forbes picks off Andy Dalton.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
So again that at.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Least from a fan perspective, right our perspective, it's like, oh,
you know, that's that's one you kind of wish you
had back. It also looked like that maybe he and
Dante Johnson weren't on the same page on it.
Speaker 4 (27:00):
They were not.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
Okay, there was a clearing rock that takes the free
safety deep out in the middle, and then you're gonna
run a deep dig. A dig is like a fifteen
yard in coming back towards the quarterback. Think of it
as like going down phield about twelve to fourteen yards
and then break it inside on a ninety three ago
back towards the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (27:18):
Well, it looks like Dante stopped running.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
The route because Andy Dalton was expecting him to be
in a certain window and gap and he wasn't there,
and so some miscommunication who was there? There was a
safety there, had to go ahead and get an errant throw.
Those are errant throws that you go you can't get back,
and you gotta get that that has to get cleaned up.
And unfortunately, you know, you don't want that to happen
(27:45):
because it doesn't get cleaned there. It go only gets
cleaned up in practice when you get a chance to
run that route over under different conditions. So that was
a misopportunity, but it was also it doesn't do anything
well for Andy Dalton's confidence.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Well, then the defense does have a pretty good stand.
They force a three and out here, and again we
mentioned coming into the game, I think the fewest number,
I think the second fewest punts through the first six
games in NFL history, tied for second fewest. So the
Fanthers do force a punt there, they get the ball
with like thirty four seconds left to go. So now
(28:20):
we move into the second quarter, and still at this
point it's still a ten to nothing games. So even
though things don't feel good, it's still not you know,
the game's certainly not out of reach. But then on
a third down deep in their own territory, a former
Panther makes himself known.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Dalton would split backs out of the gun thanks to
snap back to throw Andy under pressure down he goes
and he is sacked back at the twelve yard line.
Guess who before Frankie lou Who?
Speaker 2 (28:52):
Yeah, So that sets up a sixty two yard punt
for Johnny Hecker. It gets returned fifteen yards to the
forty one and then the running attack continues for the
Washington Commanders and Brian Robinson at the second and goal
from the eight punches it in.
Speaker 6 (29:16):
Mariota again the snap and off, Robinson plowing forward, reaching
for the goal line and he is in for a
touchdown for the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
And there was a big passing interference in that that
helped helped.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
So and then and then you have that compondent with
because you had a penalty that allowed that ball to
go down the field even a little bit more so
and for the for them to keep the possession. We
did not do anything to help ourselves at all, you know,
And so that was crazy. Can I go back quickly
to that Louisville's sacks. Don't forget Taylor Moulten, who's playing
that right tackle that was on the side that Taylor
(29:54):
Moulton would be on. Yeah, and Louisville got the field
fast out of a nine te me getting run up
the field fast, making the right tackle.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
Turn.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Not only did he pass him about nine yards deep,
then he comes back because Andy Dalton steps up in
the pocket to go ahead to avoid that rush, he
stops on the dime, comes back another three yards to
make that sack.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
So he is almost going like nine.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
Yards off the field and stop and then it comes
back down the field another three yards to make that
tackle that was fast, and typically is Taylor Mouton on
that side who hols it down.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
And of course you know the iron Man played so
many games, but not even due to injury. So obviously
we'll keep looking for his status reports and status for
all the players, I think, and we'll get this a
little bit later. Injury port wise, there are a couple of injuries,
but didn't seem like anything major.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
Of course, will know more tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
So the ten more points get scored, another field goal
and then another touchdown Mariota a passing touchdown, this time
to zach ERT's twelve yards. So right, so at the
half are down twenty seven to nothing. We will fast
forward to the fourth quarter for the one bright spot
offensively for the Panthers, and it came from Cuba Hubbard.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Two tight ends to the left.
Speaker 6 (31:13):
Hubbard the one back out of a pistol set Baltic
chestise staff and it's tuba sweep so around the left side,
has an angle and cuts it in for a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
I like to he's one of my favorite players on
the squad.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Well, he is the epitome I think too. Also right
of one. He's been a really good organizational guy, and
he's he's grown to the point where you know, he
went from kind of being a backup in that backup role. Yes,
so now he's the lead back and now he's putting
him in position where you know he's going to get
paid in his next contract.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
But and I see a lot of leadership coming from
him and at that position at running back. And don't
forget because you have Bryce Young. Bryce Young, yes, maybe
a leader, but I say maybe more. So you're getting
that leadership coming from that running back room with Tuba.
Andy Dalton's back in the mix. Now you're gonna get
more leadership come from Andy Dalton. But make no mistake
about it, there's something special about Tuba.
Speaker 4 (32:08):
You know.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
The last three weeks we're talking about that the player
who gets the award for playing well under under different
conditions even though they need lose, that's been Tuba, you know,
And so we can make a case for going to
Tuba once again. But Cuba has done a great, great job.
There's no quitting that young man. And there's no quitting
none of those guys, but there's no quitting that young man.
(32:28):
And I like the way he plays ball. I like
the way he attacks the defense, the way he likes
to run the ball. So he's been one of the
bright spots to me.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
I'm trying to remember the the milestone he was. It's
either tied for the most or like top three in
rushing for Canadian.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
Born NFL players. So you know, continues to put up
some some good numbers and.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
Here you got fifty two yards this week. But under
this there's something about him. Even when he scored that
test out. He dips in the left. He's running sweep
to his left. He dips in did he dipps back
out and gets on the outside and beats everybody to
the sideline to get to score the test out. He
has tremendous speed in my opinion, to go ahead and
(33:15):
do that at that juncture.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
All right, So Panthers falling this one, forty to seven,
will come back and should be ready with Jatavian Sanders
to talk with the guys in the booth and Eugene
Robinson alongside. I am Mike Pachico. This is Carolina Panthers
Radio Network, and we welcome you back to Bank of
America Stadium. Alongside Eugene Robinson. I am Mike Pachico. Panthers
(33:40):
fall forty to seven. Next up another four o'clock game,
four to twenty five next week at Empower Field at
Mile High Stadium against the Denver Broncos Panthers Stadium show
on the Fox begins at one thirty Carolina Panthers countdown
to kickoff at three thirty in the network kickoff at
four to twenty five. We'll have the postgames, so probably
about thirty minutes or so after we picked it up tonight,
(34:03):
maybe about seven thirty ish next week. Hope you'll join
us for that. We're gonna send it back to Northwest
Field and Landover Maryland and Jim's Oki and the guys
have Jatavian Sanders.
Speaker 7 (34:14):
All right, guys, thanks and welcome back to Landover Maryland.
Speaker 8 (34:17):
JT.
Speaker 7 (34:17):
Sanders the Panthers rookie tight end joining us out at
six catches sixty one yards to lead the Panthers in
all those departments. But Gatavia, of course, the big picture
was it was tough from the beginning and those four
quarters were tough.
Speaker 8 (34:29):
I know for you guys out there.
Speaker 7 (34:30):
Overall, what happened, how did how did the game get away?
And how were things just not able to get back
on track of the Tower game?
Speaker 9 (34:36):
It comes down to the details, man, you know what
I'm saying. They executed their game plan better than we did,
and we had a lot of self inflicted wounds that
they ultimately scored points off of. So we just got
behind a little too quick and just couldn't recover.
Speaker 8 (34:51):
JT.
Speaker 6 (34:52):
Back to back games where you've been setting career highs
and receptions and receiving yards. Now that you know you're
almost a midway point of your rookie season. What have
you noticed that's changing for you?
Speaker 9 (35:05):
Oh, the game is starting to slow down a lot.
You know what I'm saying, I'm not thinking as much.
I'm being able to go out there and play freely,
pay play as fast as I want to play, and
is ultimately making the plays.
Speaker 8 (35:14):
That making the plays when they come to me.
Speaker 6 (35:18):
What has been around Ian Thomas and Tommy Tremble done
for you?
Speaker 8 (35:22):
Oh, They've been a great help.
Speaker 9 (35:23):
Like even when they were hurting Kim, they were they
were always on my side, you know what I'm saying,
being like big brothers to me.
Speaker 8 (35:29):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 9 (35:32):
Without them, I wouldn't be having a success I'm having
right now, you know what I'm saying. So I'm forever
grateful for them, and they're They're the main reason that
I feel like my run game has gotten better at
this next level.
Speaker 8 (35:42):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 9 (35:43):
When you look at Ian and Tommy, I personally think
they's some of the best runbacking tight ends in the league.
And I've taken a lot of things from them.
Speaker 8 (35:49):
Guys, Hey, J T.
Speaker 10 (35:51):
Kirk, Coleman, here Man, and I want to say this,
going into this game, after watching the film and what
this defense of the Commanders had, I actually had you
high as one of my guys going into saying that
he was gonna have a big game a because of
kind of their style of defense, and be the emergence
of you and you are finding yourself open a lot
of times, and now you're starting to really make some
plays for this team. But let me ask you, like,
(36:13):
when you guys are getting down when this, when you
guys are going into halftime down twenty seven to nothing,
what are some of the things you guys are talking about.
What are some of the adjustments that you're making, And
who's kind of standing up and saying like, hey, guys,
we can go down there. We got to just play
one play at a time and let's let's turn this
thing around.
Speaker 9 (36:28):
It's ultimately the players, you know what I'm saying, It's
all of us. We're a team, so we gotta trust
and believe in each other and just and just we
got to come out and just execute better that second half,
Like we got a little touchdown on the board, and
that just came down to us executing the play calls
that Coach Canaas was calling. That's why we end up
having seven on the board. But it just it starts
with us, you know what I'm saying. It starts with
(36:49):
the details. It starts with it starts with like seeing
that looking practice at the beginning of the week and ultimately
executing when coach calls it during the game. So it
really just comes down to execution.
Speaker 8 (37:01):
All right, JT.
Speaker 7 (37:02):
We appreciate you joining us up one today. We'll see
out of Denver next week.
Speaker 8 (37:05):
Thank you, yes, sir, thank you. JT.
Speaker 7 (37:07):
Sanders Rookie tight and again the top receiver today for
the Panthers with his six catches for sixty one yards.
Back to Charlotte now for Mike and Eugene.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
All right, guys, thank you very much. Panthers Locker Room
Show brought to you by Southern Star and official bourbon
of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas.
I liked what I heard from David, Yes, he really,
I mean he had some really good thoughts. You know,
sometimes hard after a game to put together.
Speaker 8 (37:31):
You know, you know.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
And another thing he mentioned too, because he's talking about blocking,
which a lot we asked O Tight ends to do
a lot of blocking, particularly in Thomas, and I know
he's in. Thomas is just newly back in the mix,
so I understand. And so Trimble has been kind of
handling that aspect of the game. But blocking from the
tight end has always been a paramise, It has always
(37:53):
been a staple here. You've got to be able to
block that tight end. Yes, you can catch a pass,
but you got to be able to And I think
the fact that he's learning from those two, I think
that's gonna bode well for him because I think he's
gonna become a guy that's gonna be positioning to get
his body in there where he can go ahead and
not get beat on the edge or not get out
(38:16):
refilmed blocks and this and that by just body position
from watching Ian, because Ian Thomas does a really good
job of that.
Speaker 4 (38:22):
He's so tremble.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
So for Nessary, I like what I heard him say
that because that's a big component beyond the passing.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
That's a big component of what we do.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
All right, So we thank you Tavian for stopping by
with the guys in the booth. Panthers fall today in
Washington forty to seven, and you're listening to Panthers Football
presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
Back to the Panthers postgame show preseumly by Southern Star
unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers, celebrate the spirit of
the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
And we welcome you back out here to Bank of
America Stadium with the Panthers falling today in Washington at
Northwest Field and Landover Maryland forty to seven. So Carolina
and I one and six and Washington improves Erica to
five and two and they stop. They stay atop the
standings in the NFC East. Let's send it back to
(39:14):
Landover Maryland for Jim Kirk and a niche with head
coach Dave Canals.
Speaker 7 (39:19):
All right, welcome back to Landover Maryland. We're joined by
the head coach Dave Canalis here and of course Dave,
it started poorly with the pick six and then things
just continued on that path for good portion of the game.
Just the broad strokes, what in particular about this game
just didn't come together throughout the course of the four quarters.
Speaker 8 (39:36):
Yeah, you hit.
Speaker 11 (39:36):
It starts with the ball. It's all about the ball.
And you know, we have a fantastic drive starting at
the beginning and for it to end that way, you know,
just and turn it into a quick you know, seven
points for the for the commanders. You know, it just
makes things difficult. And then the second interception there, you know,
really just for an offense that was making yards and
(39:57):
doing things, you know, just it made for a long day.
So that's something that we have to continue to, you know,
hammer home and take care of this ball.
Speaker 6 (40:05):
Coach kind of from here, what's your message to the
locker room.
Speaker 11 (40:11):
Yeah, it's it comes down to the ball. You know,
it's about you know, making sure that we give ourselves
a chance in these games by being just really smart
about what we're doing with the football, and then you know,
from a defensive standpoint, finding a way to get off
the field, you know. And so that's you know, the
combination of those things, you know, returning right back to
the basics.
Speaker 8 (40:30):
That's what we have.
Speaker 11 (40:30):
And you know, it's like we got to just go
back to the film. We got to go back to
the breakdowns of the runs early on the breakdowns in
the past game, and then certainly on the defensive side,
just all across the board. You know, it's it's returning
to the fundamentals and having the toughness and the ability
to you know, to improve those things.
Speaker 6 (40:47):
Dave, what made you stay with Andy for for most
of the game.
Speaker 11 (40:52):
I wanted to come out of the second I want
to come out in the second half and get back
to our football and try to establish a drive where
it feels like us to show them, guys, if we execute,
this is how we can look. And so we had
that driving. Of course, the game was well out of
hand at that point, but I wanted to make sure
that the guys knew we're not going to change anything
that we're doing. We just got to execute at a
(41:13):
higher level and they were able to refocus on that drive,
you know, but we got to have consistency throughout the game.
Speaker 10 (41:19):
Hey, coach Kirk Coleman, here if you could kind of
work with my analogy right here, if you are the
doctor and the team or the players are your patients,
where do you feel like you need to go first?
And where do you where you're saying we are we are,
we are hurting right here. We need to get better
and self diagnosis, like where is it beyond the ball?
(41:41):
Where can this team really start to say like, hey,
doesn't matter who's out there, where are we getting in
where are we going to show, where we're going to highlight,
how are we going to come out here and play
every single week.
Speaker 11 (41:51):
Yeah, it's the consistency of what's showing up in practice
with these great preparations, the great practices, the energy and
all that. For that part of it, Kurt to translate
to Sunday, because we keep stacking these great weeks and
continuing to go back to the fundamentals and basics of
what we're doing in all phases. But that has to
(42:12):
show up on Sunday with great energy and belief that
you can get it done. And that's the that's the
biggest challenge that I have as their head coach, is
how can we translate this guys to show up on Sunday.
Speaker 7 (42:24):
All right, Coach Dave Canalis, we appreciate, I appreciate your time, Coach,
thank you so much. All right, thanks guys, Coach Canalist.
There and forty to seven launch to be worked on
during the course of the week in practice coming up
this week and hopefully it translates on the field in
Denver come next Sundays. We started back to showtu now
with Mike and Eugene.
Speaker 5 (42:40):
All right, thank you guys very much.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
I thought that was a really good question from Kurt, Like,
because that's I mean, that's the million dollar question.
Speaker 8 (42:47):
Right.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
If we feel good about practice, how can we take
this in do the game exactly?
Speaker 3 (42:52):
And sometimes I mean you do practice how you play. Yeah,
So how you play is determine how you practice, you know,
and so you want to continue It sounds like they're
having really good practices and you want to continue that.
What you got to do is you got to take
care of the little details. Little details kill you, like
(43:13):
a mistackle. Not getting your head across that will kill you.
It's control. I'm talking defensively now, all right. Or if
you're a little premature and uh, trying to knock down
the pass and you bump into the receiver and you
get a passing affairance those things, right, those little little details.
(43:33):
You want to compete, and you want to compete, fall
out and go at it. But you got to take
care of those little details on the office side of
the ball. Uh, you got to be able to blow
people off that line of scrimmage and give to give
us some options to go ahead and eat and have
that one on one thing with the linebacker or the safety.
And so it's always comes down to the little details.
(43:55):
And when you when you don't win those individual battles
across the ball from every position, then it gets you
regardless how well you played in practice, all right, because
the practice is not live, right right, you know, and
a game is live.
Speaker 5 (44:12):
Yeah, you got a man in your face, man your face,
and you gotta win that one on one.
Speaker 4 (44:16):
You gotta win that one on one battle, all right.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
Forty to seven. The final today in Landover, Maryland, Panthers
falling to the Commanders. We'll take a look at the
Honda scoreboard when we come back this Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
We walk me back to Bank America Stadium like Pachico
Eugene Robinson along signed Panthers falling forty to seven at
(44:40):
the Washington Commanders. And let's take the drive around the league,
brought to you by your Hunter Dealers of the Carolina's
the two late games, Rams hang on to win at
home against the Raiders twenty to fifteen, so they're now
two and four. Raiders fall to two and five. Although
it's interesting short week for the they're going to play
the Vikings on Thursday night. John McVay saying that he
(45:04):
believes Cooper cup the wide receiver for the Rams, should
be available for that game.
Speaker 5 (45:08):
A big addition back to that team.
Speaker 3 (45:12):
I know Cooper Couple would love to get back in
the mix after being injured for such a long time,
and he's been one of the most explosive players in
the last couple of years.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
Kansas City Chiefs on the road beat the San Francisco
forty nine ers in Santa Clara twenty eight to eighteen.
A couple things from this game. Rock Purty three interceptions
and Patrick Mahomes had two interceptions passes for one hundred
fifty four yards. He does have a rushing touchdown. Kareem
(45:43):
Hunt has two touchdowns on seventy eight yards for the Chiefs,
but this is the first time in Patrick Mahomes' career
that he has started off six to zero.
Speaker 4 (45:53):
Wow. Really, Yeah, didn't know that.
Speaker 5 (45:55):
Yeah, isn't that interesting.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Well, he's a heck of a quarterback. Reminds me a
lot of Joe Martin and Away. He throws from every
single angle.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
The one thing I would wonder about him because a
lot of people have said he's and I think this
is fair to say that he's the heir apparent, even
though style wise are not very similar, but air apparent
to Tom Brady. I don't know that Patrick Mahomes will
play as long as Tom Brady, but he is certainly.
I mean he's still in the I mean, I don't
know if he's hit his APEC yet.
Speaker 4 (46:22):
Yeah. I mean how many Super Bowls is?
Speaker 8 (46:24):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (46:25):
Tom Brady half seven seven? Yeah, I wouldn't put it
past Mahomes home crazy. Mahomes is that guy. Yeah, I mean,
he really is that guy, that quarterback, and so every
he's respected across the league. But you put Mahomes on
any other team, he's gonna probably do extremely well and
make that team a contender.
Speaker 8 (46:43):
All right.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
Coming up at about forty minutes, the Jets at two
and four will take on the Steelers at four and two.
Two Monday night games Tomorrow night at the early game
at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Baltimore at the Buccaneers.
That should be a fun sure you get you're tuned
in for that one. And then at nine o'clock, the Chargers,
(47:04):
with Jim Harborugh in his first year as the head coach,
goes to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona and takes
on the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago and Dallas with bye week,
so another interesting day.
Speaker 5 (47:16):
This was a tough day for quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (47:17):
Though, I mean Jaden Daniels in our game, Aidan O'Connell
in the Vegas game, he went out. Garda Mitchew came
in in that game. It looks like Deshaun Watson a
very familiar injury that you and Jim's okie unfortunately share.
Looks like he might have an achilli and this I
think would be his third season ending injury in seven years.
Speaker 4 (47:35):
I know.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
It's like us, he's been traded as he's never got
on track.
Speaker 5 (47:41):
Yeah, he's never been able to get on track.
Speaker 2 (47:43):
And so just some of the storylines throughout the NFL today,
we'll take a quick time out here on the Panthers
postgame show presented by Southern Star, an official bourbon of
the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas. Well,
I know the guys in the booth, Jim, Kurt and
a Niche chomping at the bit to get their final thoughts.
(48:03):
So we'll go back to Northwest Stadium and get those
when we come back. You're listening to Panthers Football presented
by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (48:12):
Back to Mike Pachico with more of the Panthers postgame
show pre see him a by Southern Star un official
Bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the Spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
With Eugene Robinson, I, Mike Pachico, and we welcome you
back to the Southern Starbourbon postgame show. Panthers falling today
forty to seven. Let's take a look at the injury
report brought to you by Atrium Health. You deserve to
live your best life. Atrium Health is here to help.
Looks like Raheem black Shirt, he got injured late in
the game and a kickoff return. Looked like his shoulder
(48:50):
was kind of dragging down a little bit. That was
the official injury. He did not come back in the game,
and of course we'll learn more, but he is He's
kind of an unsung hero on this team.
Speaker 3 (48:59):
He's another one who bright spots. I think got the
special teams. I love seeing those guys who can take
a punt or to take the kickoff and mix and
do something with it. Steve Smith was one of the best.
Michael Bates right one of the best. And there's something
about black Share that's just I just.
Speaker 5 (49:18):
Like the way you lose it first.
Speaker 3 (49:21):
Yeah, I'm like, dude, this is your spot, this is
your jam, this is what you need to go to
do it. So I know that he, you know, looked
like when he looked like he was injured. He stayed
on the ground there for a long time. Hope he
gets back. But he's one of the bright spots I
think in that Carolina Panthers team because special teams. I
like watching him have a threat every time he touches
(49:41):
the ball.
Speaker 2 (49:42):
No, I agree, let's send it back to Northwest Stadium
as promised for Jim, Kurt and Anish with their final thoughts, zoke.
Speaker 7 (49:49):
All right, wrapping things up from Land over Maryland and
probably could have done this at halftime, but we waited
till the end of the game today. Forty to seven,
the final score in a game where the Panthers were
almost never in it. A pick six to get things
rolling by Dante Fowler of Andy Dalton. That was kind
of a harbinger. Moore to come two interceptions just ninety
three yards passing for Dalton in the game, and then
(50:12):
Washington loses their star rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels in that
first quarter got injured on his first big run of
the game with a rib injury. Replaced by Marcus Mariota,
but he was on point the entire way. Eighteen out
of twenty three to two hundred five yards two touchdowns, Washington
would rack up four hundred and twenty one yards, just
one eighty for the Panthers. Kurt, the Panthers are one
and six, they've lost four in a row. I don't
(50:33):
know how you dissect this other to say it was
just across the board all Washington and for the Panthers,
regression not progressing this one.
Speaker 10 (50:42):
I thought, Yeah, from the very get go what I
thought that first drive looked incredibly promising, that which ended
into a pig six to start the game. That way,
it's a tough mountain to climb, let alone on an
opposing person's home turf, and then you're trying to overcome
your own self at the end of the day, and
I never felt like the defense could ever get into
(51:03):
a rhythm theyet. I never felt like they were ever
on the same page, and anytime a play was called,
whether it was run or pass, it almost seemed like
someone was always in the wrong position to try to
make the play.
Speaker 8 (51:14):
I look at some of the totals.
Speaker 10 (51:15):
I mean, Washington got a total of four uner and
twenty one yards. They rushed for over two hundred yards.
This is the third time this season they've rushed for
over two of yards. They were five to ten on
third down, zero turnovers. That is a formula for winning
football teams. And then you look at what we did
is a total of one hundred and eighty three for
ten on third downs with two turnovers, and I would
say there's three technically on a turnover on downs when
(51:36):
we got stopped in four down. I think all three
phases of the game, we kind of hurt ourselves. We
never gave ourselves the best opportunity to win this game.
And I said, for the Keys, we have to be
able to establish a run and stay consistent, and it's
tough to do when you're playing from a deficit the
whole game. And then obviously you needed the offense to
kind of really be efficient, and they only got efficient
(51:56):
on that very last series for them when they went
down and scored.
Speaker 8 (52:00):
It's just tough. I hope this is.
Speaker 10 (52:01):
Something that where you can say, you know what, we're
gonna watch this film, we're gonna be critical, and then
we're gonna flush it out of our system. Because this season,
as we talked about, we have a lot of time
left and it's only one game at a time. You
got to say, this is it, We're done with this,
all right? What do we got this week? Who's available?
Who wants to play our style of football? Because that
was not a relentless defense that I saw, and that
(52:22):
was not an opportunistic offense for us. So we got
to come together and figure out who wants to play
football and move forward next week.
Speaker 6 (52:30):
Ah, Jim, you look at this defense right now, and
we can labor the injury point all day long. But
if you don't count Washington's final drive where they took
a couple of meal downs to end the game, the
Commanders scored on seven of their eight drives. And the
reality is, even if the offense plays well above average,
(52:52):
the defense isn't giving them a chance. Right now, they're
giving up thirty plus and four straight games five times
that's happened in seven games this season. They've given up
forty now and in two games. I think at some
point there is a very real cruelty in this business.
Speaker 8 (53:11):
And Kurt, you know this.
Speaker 6 (53:14):
John Fox said it when he took over a team
that was one in fifteen. He looked at the video.
He wanted to see the guys that competed even when
the chips were down, even when the final outcome of
the game had already been decided. And there are guys
on this roster who are auditioning, whether they know it
or not, Kurt, to be a part of the core
(53:34):
for when this thing turns. And you know, you start
to look at some of the young players. I look
at Trevin Wallas, a guy who has been thrown into
the fire. This will help him get better as a
player right now, it's a lot on his plate. DJ
Johnson's a second year guy outside pass rusher. He's got
to show us a little something. Can he be a
guy right now with all these injuries and a lack
of a pass rush as somebody who can go get
(53:56):
the quarterback? Shaw Smith Wade getting opportunities now that's been cut.
There's guys out of the defensive line, undrafted players, you know,
maybe on their last lifeline with the NFL. These are opportunities, Kurt,
and you know, it better than anybody. They can be fleeting. So, yeah,
you've got injuries, and that's the reality in this league.
Nobody feels sorry for you.
Speaker 3 (54:17):
No.
Speaker 10 (54:17):
And what I and I agree to your last point
is this, it doesn't matter what and who's out there.
The matter of fact is we're out there, and whoever's
out there, you're looking to see who's going to give
it everything that they got.
Speaker 8 (54:30):
It's not always going to look pretty.
Speaker 10 (54:31):
And for the young guys you wish, you dream, wishing
you get to play every single time on Sundays in
the NFL, you should never take this for granted. And
I don't care at what stage of your career it is,
whether you're a rookie, whether you're a ten to twelfth
year guy. It is an opportunity and is a blessing
to be it on that field and to not give
everything you got because of the situation of the circumstance
that you're in.
Speaker 8 (54:51):
You're doing a disservice to yourself.
Speaker 10 (54:53):
You're doing a disservice to your team and to the
city of the Carolinas. This is our brand of football,
and I can tell you this. For me as a
leader in that locker room, I would go in there
and say, I don't care who you are, what name
you are. If you're gonna be out there, I better
see everything you got for the next ten weeks of
this football. Otherwise, don't show up, don't come out there,
do not dress. I only want those guys that out
(55:13):
there that are ready to go all the way for
sixty minutes.
Speaker 7 (55:17):
That's a dog right there, Kurt Coleman.
Speaker 8 (55:19):
And that's the way I'm telling you. Hey, listen right,
I'm getting a little. I get a little.
Speaker 6 (55:23):
If we can't get healthy, Dan Morgan's gonna start blowing
them up.
Speaker 10 (55:27):
I told I told Dave Tepper, I said, look, I'll
play for free.
Speaker 8 (55:30):
For this team.
Speaker 10 (55:31):
There's not many teams I would say that for for
this team, I'll go out there and I'll show you.
I may not have the speed like I used to,
but guess what, you'll get everything you got out of me.
Speaker 8 (55:39):
Hey, what did you say? Third down or down specially?
Speaker 6 (55:41):
Good?
Speaker 8 (55:41):
Right?
Speaker 10 (55:42):
Or down specially? I got I got that. I that's
it my range.
Speaker 7 (55:45):
We need help on third down. It was probably about
a ten. They get that call by tuesday, Jim.
Speaker 6 (55:50):
I think you know the big question now is where
does this team go from here. There's still ten games
left in the season. There seemed to be a little
bit of progress. Now there's been regrets the last couple
of weeks. Where do they go? What are they? You know,
this season one and six not off to a great start.
(56:10):
But if you're gonna lay the foundation and you're really
going to put those bricks in order and start building
this house these next ten weeks, I think you've got
to start to find some of those pieces who are
going to be the core guys you know that can
be a part of that next group.
Speaker 7 (56:25):
Yep, as Kurtz said, with that means the ones that
shouldn't be here should not be here. And so it's
a matter of both who's going to continue forward, who's
the core and who should not be part of it
moving forward? All Right, we'll see you next week at
Denver coming up, But thanks for our crew. Harol Hammrick,
Ben Blevans, and Jason Hutchinson went to Black David Eads,
Matt Hogan and Byron Putman back at Charlotte, Amie Martin,
(56:46):
Eric Fiddleman sharing Thoresland on sidelines. David Lyton are Executive
producer forty to seven Panthers lose at Washington.
Speaker 8 (56:52):
Back to Mike and Eugene.
Speaker 2 (56:54):
All right, so thank you very much, And that really
kind of echoes a lot of what we talked about,
just the fact that this is and we talked about
this a lot. Usually leader in the year in bad seasons,
but you know, guys are playing for their jobs, whether
it's here or thirty one other teams.
Speaker 4 (57:09):
Absolutely right.
Speaker 5 (57:10):
I mean like, if you don't think you have anything
to play for, you got.
Speaker 4 (57:14):
A lot to play for it.
Speaker 3 (57:14):
And any guy who gets put up on a practice squad,
from a practice squad to the team, you are always
auditioning because I know who my guys are gonna be.
I know that oh I'm probably gonna have Bryce that quarterback,
or any dark that quarterback.
Speaker 4 (57:29):
I know what those guys be.
Speaker 3 (57:31):
It's those other positions that fill in that linebacker, that
feeling at right tackle, that feeling that ohle defensive tackle.
Those positions you got to show well. And if you're
not showing well, and as I'll speak defensively, when we're
getting pushed off the line, I gotta be able to
blame somebody. I gotta be able to go where is
(57:51):
the breach? Where is where is it going wrong? And
that's why you're always auditioning. So some guys that have
a good game, so some guys are not not performing well.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
All right, let's pause ten seconds here for stations to
identify themselves. This is the Carolina Panthers Radio Network. All right,
we'll have our final thoughts and we'll take a look
at our sun Belt hardest working Player when we return
to Bank of America Stadium with Eugene Robinson. I am
Mike Pachico, Panthers fall today forty to seven in Washington.
You're listening to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
The Panthers postgame show continues. Please see I'm a by
Southern Star, unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the
spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (58:37):
Hey, welcome you back to the Southern Starburban postgame show
with Eugene Robinson. I am Mike Pachico, Panthers falling forty
to seven on the road at Washington, and it is
now our duty to present our sun Belt hardest working player.
And I think we're gonna have liked me too. Yep,
we are working mine on this one. Jatavian Sanders our
(58:59):
hardest working player the game, presented by somebout Reynolds, the
official rental equipment partner of the Carolina Panthers, and Jatavian.
Sanders targeted six times, made six catch. I did like
to see that had a total of sixty one yards.
Of course, had that twenty nine yard reception that was
his longest of the game, and averaged about ten zero
point two yards per catch.
Speaker 5 (59:18):
So pretty good game for him.
Speaker 3 (59:21):
And he's been he's been showing up the last couple
of weeks too, so which is very good and very
good for rookie.
Speaker 2 (59:26):
All Right, Gene, normally this is our time for our
three and outs, but we're down to sixty seconds on
the clock, so we.
Speaker 5 (59:30):
Have two and outs and we'll begin with you.
Speaker 3 (59:33):
But I think just offensively, we got to be much
more cohesive. We can't throw interceptions, it's no doubt about that.
And I think we make that concerted effort to stay
with the run, regardless of what's going on with the pass.
Stay with the run. And then defensively, we can't get
pushed off the ball. Guys are fighting for the jobs,
and you know that you're fighting for your jobs because
(59:54):
our defense is playing this way, continuous plays away, they're
going to be not here on the team.
Speaker 2 (59:58):
Well, and I want to add to something that you
said earlier and kind of put my twists on it.
Speaker 5 (01:00:01):
I think this week is tunnel vision time.
Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
Don't obviously forget the noise, don't worry about what's going on,
don't worry about the record, study the playbook, do something harder,
go to the judge machine, get some extra like do
the extra detailed, nitty gritty stuff that can get you
better next week so you can win that one on
one battle and just focus on doing what you can do.
Speaker 3 (01:00:23):
And secondary I would, I would definitely get on the
judge machine and catch the ball up.
Speaker 4 (01:00:27):
You can't. You can't do that enough. Yeah, there's more.
Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
You can catch the ball deficively as a defensive back,
as a linebacker, the better you are that when you
have a chance to get an interception and make it
change the game, Exavier woods Horn, you can change the game.
Speaker 2 (01:00:41):
And how do you how do you how do you
build confidence when things aren't going well?
Speaker 8 (01:00:45):
Practice?
Speaker 4 (01:00:45):
Practice, practice, practice.
Speaker 5 (01:00:46):
Practice, practice, Yep, that's how you get the Carnegie.
Speaker 4 (01:00:48):
Hall practice practice practice.
Speaker 2 (01:00:51):
Indeed, that's how you get there, all right, well, I
want to thank everybody here. Jim already listed off the credits,
so we don't need to do that, but I do
want to thank everybody in the room with us here today.
Of course Wondo Black, David Eads, Hey you got the
Barron Podcam podcast mats with Podcast Mizzi.
Speaker 8 (01:01:07):
