Speaker 1 (00:03):
Now to Jim Zilki with the Panthers postgame show preseming
by Southern Star Unofficial Burban of the Carolina Panthers celebrate
the spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
And Eugene Robinson.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yes, I will have you know, yes, as we make
it through another Panthers loss, this one there fifth in
a row as they fall to one and seven on
the season and Carolina losing this one twenty eight to
fourteen at Denver, a game where the Panthers went with
Bryce Young because of the thumb injury of course to
Andy Dalton from the car wreck earlier in the week,
(00:40):
and Bryce started out decently, but then he was after
opening touchdown drive pretty inefficient.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
The entire offense was after that for a while.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
He would finish with two touchdowns, two interceptions, two hundred
and twenty four yards passing in the game, twenty four
out of thirty seven for him. One of the bright
spots was undrafted rookie Jalen Cocher four catches seventy eight
yards of late touchdown in this game. Another rookie Xavier
League Gets had a touchdown thirty four yards receiving on
four catches running the ball, not as effective today for Carolina.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Tuba ran at fifteen times just fifty six yards.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
So bigger problem was again the defense not able to
you know, keep the team in.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
It was the second quarter three touchdowns they gave up.
You go down twenty one to seven and a half time.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Eugene bo Nicks, a rookie quarterback, two hundred and eighty
four yards, three touchdown passes. He was only five touchdowns
five interceptions heading into this game. We got some guys
back to that I was more hopeful, I thought with
Jadavian Clowney, Josie Jewel.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
They did some good things.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Robinson had two sacks up front of the defensive line,
so they did some.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Decent things there.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
But at the end of the day, not enough to
make you ever feel like the Panthers had a chance
to win this game.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Talking about the defense toops, we told we talked about
the defense. There was just too many times when they're
getting pushed off the ball. Yeah, they they were able,
they were just getting pushed off the ball. I saw
the defensive line getting back to three yards and the
running back having chances to get to the second level.
So that needed to get shored up. As control the
(02:15):
quarterback getting down this getting out of the pocket. Well,
that's due to as control. Typically you want to keep
that guy in the pocket. And we lost contained too many,
too many times, I thought, And then we didn't make
enough plays defensively. But when I flip it back on
the offensive side of the ball, I really believe that. Man,
(02:35):
the Broncos got into an eight man front and dared
you to run the ball and stopped it. They I mean,
when we think about how Chuba, because when we first started,
all right, chuobah, okay it, we're about to do some
put some work in it, they end up said cease
and desist, and we're going to stop the run. And
they stopped the run and they made you throw the ball,
(02:56):
which they felt that that may be the weakness of
the Carolina Panthers, given the receivers that's out, given the quarterback,
change a lot of things, and they made you throw
the ball, and we did not make enough passes to
be effective today. The ones that we overthrew, the ones
that we could have had a chance with, hits you
in the hands and you don't make that play, all
(03:19):
ends up working against you. So man, I thought there
was a lot of promise. When we first started the game,
I said, Okay, this is gonna be competitive. I'm rooting
for your Bryce. And then it just seemed to go downhill.
From a defensive standpoint and an office and standpoint, there's
just seemed to be no continuity and nothing that you
can hang your hat on and say, oh, we can
(03:39):
just do this.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
Nothing to that.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
It's a league where you have to be able to
throw the ball, and especially if you fall behind, you've
got to be able to throw the ball to be
able to come back when you are down. And I
feel like, you know, we can play small ball. We
could do checkdowns, we could do lateral screens and things
like that. Yeah, but you cannot. You can't be just
inefficient as far as throwing the ball down the field.
The entire game average six two point one yards in
(04:01):
the passing game. It's just it's hard to come back
from something like that.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Yeah, And I understand why Coach Kanal is in the
very first series, because we were running the ball and
the ball was going laterally, we did some screens. Okay,
that's warranted, I get it, all right, But when you
continue and the ball is going laterally, you can't press
the field. And then when you do throw the ball
down the field, you're expecting that the receiver to be there.
(04:26):
The receiver's not there. Oh if you do hit him
in the hands, he's not catching the ball. We saw
Legut had a testyle, but we saw a couple of
plays where Leget could have really been special, and we said, man,
he had a great day. Absolutely he was a beast.
We could have said that, but that's not the that's
not the case at all. And so from that standpoint, Ben,
(04:48):
this just wasn't enough. And then we didn't even talk
about the interceptions.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah, two interceptions.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
One in the end zone antenna for Cocher, which is
under thrown on the ball that you have to high
point you have to throw it goes out of bounds
or only your receiver can get.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
It, especially when it's an end zone throw.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
You gotta throw to the corner of the end zone
and everybody knows it's the corner of the end zone,
and Bryce knows. And the fact that he underthrew him,
he allowed the defensive back who to turn around and
catch the ball in his chest. That's how grossly he
was underthrown. If that ball is thrown out towards the
back of the end zone. That's where the receiver can
catch the ball, and you give the receiver a great chance.
(05:26):
He didn't have enough air on the ball. Jack Lom
said that he needs more air on the ball. If not,
what's gonna happen. You gotta pick. And then it was
another pick earlier too, and I'm like you, Wow, you can't,
you can't, You can't have that. It's just gonna it's
gonna hurt you. And regardless you got two tests down,
regardless of anything. When you lose, there's nothing there for anybody.
(05:49):
Nobody's gonna talk about how good you played or what
you did.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
None of that. They're gonna talk about, Hey man, you
threw two picks.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Gotta take care of the ball.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
You gotta take care of the balls.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Coach Canal's message last sec Remember it's all about the ball.
And that's where you talking about, is like, you got
to protect the football. And when you're not good, you've
got to play clean football. You can't, you can't do
it to yourself as far as making those kind of mistakes.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
Give it up.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
And that's where we find ourselves behind the eight ball
too much and not be able to mount a charge
against a really good team. I mean, the Broncos are a
very good team, and defensively they are a very good team.
They'll get they will get after you, and they were
just able to get after us. So the troop be
told is like defensively they will stop. They seem to
(06:29):
have most have like twelve men on the field. That's
how that seemed, how ubiquitous they were as a team
that were everywhere, you know, and it looked like it
was more, you know, more Broncos all over the place
from that standpoint. And so we got to come up
with some masters. And today I was so hopeful, but
(06:49):
it did not materialize. And I was hoping that Bryce Young,
for his own edification and his own self esteem, would
have a great game with his confidence was just so Instead,
he had to fight through a lot of adversity, some
self inflicted sometimes because of the offensive line. But he
had just too much to overcome the day and one
(07:11):
it did not happen at all.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Yeah, until you throw throw it out at the show
that you could throw over the top, it's not going
to be scared anybody.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Oh yeah, throw over the top too, just even if
you just even if you just do it. You at
least you put them on notice.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Right, the cover right, no doubt about it. The outburst
you heard from Byron a couple of minutes ago was
Jaden Daniels through a hail Mary and the Bears completely
blew it. They were trying to knock the ball down,
They tried to tip it. It went off the fingertip of
a defender, and I think it was the Brown that
got it who got the ball at the end, So
it was in the end zone. The Commanders beat the
(07:43):
Bears eighteen to fifteen on a hail Mary marriage play.
So the legend of Jaden Daniels the rookie quarterback continues
as well. We'll check the NFL scoreboard next segment. We'll
take a break here. The final in this one twenty
eight to fourteen as the Panthers lose to the Denver Broncos.
This is the Panthers Post game Show presented by Southern
Star Official Bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit
(08:05):
of the Carolinas. Will take a break here. More coming
up next on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network. Back on
the Southern Star Bourbon postgame Show, Jim's okielong with you,
Gene Robinson, as the Panthers fall twenty eight to fourteen
to the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
More on that in the moment, let's check the scoreboard.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Those This driver around the league has brought to you
by your Honda Dealers of the Carolinas.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
As we mentioned, it.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Was a hail Mary in the end and the Washington
Commander's escape. Of course, we played up in Washington last
week and they beat the Bears eighteen to fifteen. And
I don't know if you've got to really see it, et, Gene,
while you were talking, but the Bears had three defenders
down there. They go up to try to knock it down.
To their credit, they were not trying to intercept it,
but they misstime their jump. It hits the fingertip of
(08:50):
one of the defenders, continues into the end zone where
Brown grabs it for the touchdown. It's got to be
so frustrated for the Bears. Yes, you come down to
that last thing, you try to execute it the right
way and you just kind of whiff a little bit.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
I'm trying to get to that down on that play.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
What I did see, I see a couple of people
that jumped but you only have one designated jumper, that's
what you're supposed to have, and everybody else is looking
for the ball, looking for the tip just in.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Case, exactly in the same spot.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
And exactly So what that tells me is that they're
all trying to be the jumper. You know, you always
have one designator jumper, and then everybody else is gonna
box people out to make sure that they can go
ahead and at least knock going the ball if its tipped.
And that did not happen. So that secondary while it
falls on you, Chicago, because you could have easily been
(09:38):
in position to act that ball down off the tip.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
That's a good defense, Yes, Chicago's defense. Chiefs win over
the Raiders twenty seven to twenty Patrick Mahomes two touchdown passes.
It was the Bills thirty one Seahawks ten to touchdown
passes for Josh Allen. Chargers went over the Saints twenty
six to eight, and the Panthers will be hosting New
Orlands coming up this Sunday. Texans over the Colts twenty
(10:03):
three to twenty Jonathan Taylor's return one hundred five yards
in a touchdown. Packers beat the Jaguars thirty to twenty seven.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Very good game by the way.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Yeah, win down right to the final wire. Did Falcons
wins was a good game too. Falcons over the Bucks
thirty one to twenty six. Baker Mayfield three touchdowns in
the loss, and I think Kirk Cousins had four touchdowns
in the win. Falcons and Bucks man Atlanta's five and
three Tampa Bay's four and four.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
They're gonna be battling for sure.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Patriots lost Drake may to a concussion today and then
Jacoby were set off the bench. Leads New England to
a twenty five to twenty two win. The Jets are
two and six, as are the Patriots. Cardinals win over
the Dolphins on the last second field go twenty eight
to twenty seven. The return of to a Toungua Bay
loa for Miami in that game. Lions roll over the
Titans fifty two to fourteen. Jamis Winston leads the Browns.
(10:51):
They had offense with Jamis Winston three touchdown passes twenty
nine to twenty four.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
They beat the Ravens today.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Eagles easily over the Bengals thirty seven to seventeen, and
tonight it's gonna be the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
At the forty Diners.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
That has to be a very good game.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
It's a real good game, well should be. Niners are
a little bit dinged up, of course, as they have
been all season long in Dallas. They're just like they're not, uh,
they're not the team everyone thought they were gonna be.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Exactly right, They're really aren't that that team that everybody
thought they would be. But you know, I'm not gonna
worry about their wolves. We got enough woes of our own.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
I and't uh becauld have been working uh this whole
weekend with the East Carolina game. I haven't seen any
of the World's series, but the Dodgers are up to nothing.
First game ends on a Freddie Freeman walk off Grand Slam,
which has never happened before.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
And then last night the.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Dodgers win again and Shoeyochani hurts his shoulder, but they
say he will play in New York for Game three tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
And as I was watching that game too, and in
that ninth ending, uh, in the top of the ninth,
New York was threatening. The score they had almost I
think it was one Basis was loaded and he got
a little pop fly out, But how they got to
the bases being loaded, it was very very good. I
was like, oh my goodness, they one just hit. You
got two people that's coming in on a single, and
(12:00):
so you're gonna try to get me. You're gonna go
up by one maybe, And so from that standpoint, I
was like, well, there's something happening. But Dodgers prevail. Pitching
is always crucial at this point in time, and the
pitching becomes very crucial getting out to the better, and
they were able to get out to that last better
for New York.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
I love the NFL.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
But man, it's been a fun college football season, hasn't it.
I Mean, there are so many teams that will be
in contention for those twelve playoff spots, and I just
feel like each weekend of college football brings everybody back
together again because there's no no Oregon's number one right now,
but there's no dominant team right now in college.
Speaker 5 (12:33):
For I think it's fair game for everyone.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
And that's what I like about college right now. When
we when we look at Alabama, you would never think
that Alabama would have two losses. He was like, oh, no,
you know, and if you're going to lose too. You
better lose early. You can't lose, you can't lose late.
And so this is a number of teams. Even when
Georgia played Texas last week, they popped up because Texas
was the number one team, they popped up into second.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
And I'm like, man, it is so competitive that this.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Is a really a really good football season for everyone
involved because you don't know who's going to be there.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Yeah, what's amazing is like I like that somebody like
Jalen Cocher, who is the Panthers leading receiver, not the
first game he's been our leading receiver, can play at
an FCS school like holy Cross and come in and
play so well as he has for the Panthers. And again,
we're depleted right now because of Adam Thielin and Deontay
Johnson being out, but he stepped up and he just
looks like the real deal. So you think, here he
(13:29):
was playing Saturdays at holy Cross last year FCS, and
here he is playing NFL Sundays. He's really actually one
of the few bright spots that you can really look
at right now as far as being a bleak season
and what he's brought.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
We said that last week and we said it the
week before. Man, who's this guy Coker? Coca's coming up
and he's making some plays. If I'm MINGO, if I'm
to get if I'm any of those guys who his contemporaries,
I'm like, this dude's about to take my job because
he is warranted being on the field because he's making plays.
He's getting open, he's catching the rock too. I mean
(14:02):
he's making difficult catches too. I mean I like the
way he plays. And what happens is your quarterbacks you
get so used to having that guy when they're not
the starter, and you have a backup quarterback who's throwing
the ball.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
Who's he throwing the ball to.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
In practice, most likely Cocher, And so Cocher has really
been showing out, and so I hope he continues to
get more time because he is indeed a joy to
watch that he makes football fun. And so I really
do like him and I like what he's been doing,
and I think it's a wake up call for the
other receivers. You got to step up due because if
(14:39):
you don't think you're gonna be evaluated after the season
and evaluate what was your productions and then you have
a guy who comes from a you know, a D
two not D two one double a school and then
showing out somebody's gonna you're gonna end up losing a job.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
That's just the nature of the beast, especially when they're
younger and cheaper.
Speaker 5 (14:59):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
So I like the way he plays, and just being
a free agent in myself, I'm like, I know he's
a guy who works hard, and I know he's the
guy who stays on his craft. And no congratulations to Coker,
because I like the way he's been balling and he's
been showing up today.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
He showed out the pride of Colgate. You know that's right,
e Gene.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
Ryan. We used to play holy Cross, by the way,
I was.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
Gonna say to ask you that it seems like someone
you might have with that part of the country.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Yeah, ties against We played them a lot, all right.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
We'll take a time out here. Still to come, we'll
listen back to some of the highlights from the game.
We'll have the thoughts of a Niche and Luke and
Jake and the booth. We'll hear from coach Dave Canalis.
More scoreboard updates and more to come as we continue
on the aftermath of a twenty eight fourteen Panthers loss
at Denver. He listening to the Panthers Football presented by
Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Yes He's still postgame show preseemly by Southern Star, unofficial
bourbon of the Carolina Panthers. Celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas.
Speaker 6 (15:57):
So Red Gifts Straight up the Middle Touchdown.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Carolina Reaction and analysis to today's game with special guests,
highlights and updates from around the league.
Speaker 6 (16:09):
Complete touchdown, right side next to catch touchdown Panthers Now
what talk about it?
Speaker 7 (16:15):
Now?
Speaker 1 (16:16):
What now? To Chinzoki with the Panthers postgame show exclusively
on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
Pathers would jump out to a seven to nothing lead,
but give back twenty one points in the second quarter
down at the half twenty one to seven, final score
twenty eight to fourteen. As we get into a couple
of the calls of the game, and it was that
opening drive that was set up by the Panthers defense
where they recovered to fumble. Shy Tuttle had a good
game reaching in getting the forced fumble in this contest,
(16:49):
and Ashawn Robinson at two quarterback sacks, so some of
the interior defensive linemen doing a good job set up
a short field for Bryce Young, and then his opening
series finds the rookie Xavier le Get here for a
seven yard touch down.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Pass play.
Speaker 7 (17:04):
Rice in the gun, Hubbard left tip, Froncos rush four, throw.
Speaker 8 (17:09):
Two of the end zone.
Speaker 6 (17:10):
Brice fits it in the league get for a touchdown.
Annexavierly Get does the dollar Bill dance. Bryce Young with
a touchdown pass to the rookie out of South Carolina,
and the Panthers quiet this crowd at mile high.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
And it wouldn't last unfortunately, as they would lead seven
to nothing after the first quarter. But then the three
second quarter touchdowns by Denver as Bo Nixon, this game
would have a quarterback sneak for a touchdown. He would
throw for three touchdowns. He threw for two hundred and
eighty four yards. Here he found the tight end Adam
Troutman for a nineteen yard touchdown.
Speaker 7 (17:46):
First down at set for the nineteen of Carolina. Nixon
the shotgun Williams off his left tip, pressure off the
edge for Richardson. Let's picked up Nicks fires two at
the end, so one handed touchdown grab by the tight end,
Adam Troutman and dedver takes.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
The nice so that gave them the lead that they
would not surrender the rest of the way. Fourteen to
seven turns into twenty one to seven, and then the
Panthers fall behind a little desperation here and here they
try a fake punt, but it doesn't work out.
Speaker 7 (18:18):
Ecker fake punt.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
He'll pro he had Franklin open and he missed him
on the far side.
Speaker 8 (18:23):
Thirty ah.
Speaker 6 (18:25):
The Panthers tried the fake punt. Johnny had Sam Franklin open,
He ran.
Speaker 9 (18:30):
A curl route want I had the first down and
Sam Franklin tosses his helmet in disgust on the sideline
as he takes his seat on the bench.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
I don't think it was gonna change the outcome of
the game, Eugene. But what did you think about in
your own territory trying that is we sometimes say when
it's a little bit desperate, isn't it when you're doing
fake place?
Speaker 4 (18:51):
I feel that, you know, my experience has been when
you start going trick plays, you become desperate, and they've
they're hard to work. And I thought that, hey, the
game is within reach. Punt the ball away, put the
defense back out on the field. Now I can second
guess the coaching, but that would have been my decision,
(19:12):
and not to go ahead and try to fake, because
now if it doesn't work, they're sitting in your back
and they're sitting in your backyard and it didn't work,
and so now coach Canalis is going to be called on, Hey,
why did you run a fake rare? Why did you
just put the ball out and get it. You know,
you're still with the striking distance. And I agree, Uh
so I would not have wanted to run a fake
(19:32):
at that point. And then here it is, Franklin. I
don't want you throwing your hands down and throwing your
helmet right because this nobody said that you do touch
the ball when he throws it right, just.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Kind of showing up. I mean it could be Vi
you just showing up exactly.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
And I don't want you.
Speaker 4 (19:50):
To show up Hecker because you know Hecker has been
you know, he's he's been one of your quality players
as special teams, doing a wonderful job. And so I
don't want to show them up at all. And so
I get it frustration, but I want to I want
to diwal let down just a little bit.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
There was another decision earlier on where they went for
it on fourth and two, kind of in your midfield
and they throw a kind of check down behind the
line of scrimmage, pass to Miles Sanders. Don't even get
back to the line of scrimmage there, and that was
another setback I thought, as far as field position.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
Goes, yeah, and here it is because this is a
field positioning a game, and sometimes sometimes the best thing
is take us out, punt the ball.
Speaker 5 (20:28):
Sometimes it's just punt the.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Ball, get it out of your backyard, and then help
your defense get back on the field and hopefully they
can go ahead and put things in check. I understand why,
because the desperation and then you feel the pressure of
wanting to score and get back in the game. But
quite frankly, the Broncos were in control of this game
the entire time. Right offensively, they controlled it, defensively, they
(20:54):
controlled the game. Uh, it just seemed like even after
we scored that to score again was gonna be insurmountable.
It was gonna be it was gonna be hard to
put points on the board. And to me, Denver was
able to put points on the board rather easily. They
got what to twenty eight to seven, and it looked
like it couldn't been even more than that if they
didn't fumble the ball down at the end, you know,
(21:16):
and I know it'll be twenty eight to fourteen that
it is, but it wasn't even that close.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
It wasn't I touchdown with Tayling Cocher in the fire.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
And I'm glad we did because that betells that you're
not giving up, you know, all that stuff. But the
name of this game is win, you know. And when
you don't win, Coach Knox, you so always say it.
When you don't win, there's nothing there for no one, nothing,
So you can't don't you can't celebrate anything. You can't
say I did this, I did that. There's nothing there.
(21:46):
But when you win, there's there, there's something there for everyone.
Everyone gets to share in the bonnie. And so when
you lose, there's no bony.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Now there was no booty.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
There was no no booty, no bony.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
All right, Morte.
Speaker 3 (21:57):
Koma's pause ten seconds though, first first station identification. As
we continue through the postgame show, this is the Carolina
Panthers Radio networks, give me a quick injury update here
brought to you by Atrium Health. You deserve to live
your best life and Atrium Health is here to help
for the Panthers in this game. DJ Johnson left with
an ankle injury did not return, and Felippe Franks with
a concussion also did not return to the game. We'll
(22:19):
hear from the guys in the booth. We'll hear from
head coach Dave Canalis and more coming up as we
continue on the Southern Starbourbon postgame shows. The Panthers fall
on the road at Denver by score of twenty eight
to fourteen. You're listening on the Carolina Panthers Radio.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Network along with Eugene Robinson.
Speaker 3 (22:39):
Jim Zochi with you as we continue on the Panthers
Locker Room Show, brought to you by Southern Star and
official bourbon of the Carolina Panthers. Celebrate the spirit of
the Carolinas and a little bit. We'll be hearing from
head coach Dave Canalis and linebacker Josie Jewel, the former
Denver Bronco returning back to face his former team. Right now,
it's head back to Denver. Get the final thoughts from
Aniche Luke and Jake.
Speaker 7 (23:00):
Score from Denver Broncos twenty eight Panthers fourteen Carolina now
one and seven, and he shroth Jake, Delome Louke, Kickley Jake.
The reality for this Panthers team right now. You're coming
off a season where you won two games. You've had
just a slew of injuries all season. You look at
the injury report the last two weeks, you're twenty deep
(23:23):
at some points during the week. But as you start
to try to find identifiable pieces who can be a
part of the turnaround, I think we're starting to see
some production from this rookie class. And I want to
start with the positive because Jalen Cocher over the last
few weeks has been getting more and more run with
some of these injuries. Today four catches seventy eight yards
(23:45):
his first career touchdown. Undrafted rookie out of Holy Cross,
The Panthers have found a hitting gym.
Speaker 8 (23:52):
Yeah, I think so, And I think he's shown it
ever since.
Speaker 10 (23:55):
I believe it was the Chicago game and you just
you kind of watch him and really and truly got unfortunate.
He had another beautiful catch on a third down, a
third and long that we had a holding call that
negated it. But just it's not that he's catching wide
open passes, it's how he's catching it. Extension of his arms,
catching the back ends of football, catching a back shoulder,
(24:16):
falling into the end zone, making a catch.
Speaker 8 (24:18):
Down the scene. Yeah, we did find one.
Speaker 10 (24:20):
I think Xavier le get going up, getting big, going reach,
getting the football. We missed him on a go route today.
There's some We have some pieces now Listen, we're still
a ways away. Didn't run it as effectively as I
think I wish we could have today to try to
keep this Broncos offense. But you gotta get that Broncos
offense credit. They you know, they did a good job
(24:43):
putting points onto us. They pulled away from us. But
I thought we did okay versus this defense. This defense
was coming in with a lot of hype and causing
a lot of havoc, and I thought we did a
decent job of that.
Speaker 7 (24:54):
You know, Luke, In the last few weeks, if a
team had scored the last three possessions going in a halftime,
it's twenty one to seven, then you don't score over
the first time you get the ball. That just seemed
to snowball into a runaway. And in this game, Denver
only had one score in the second half. They only
had seven points after halftime. And you look at the
(25:16):
Panthers right, they had an interception inside the Denver twenty,
another interception inside the Denver thirty. The fake punt was
a great call and Sam Franklin's open if that connects.
There were opportunities to get back into the game. Josie
Jewell coming back. The fight seemed to be there today.
(25:37):
Just you know, it wasn't enough in the end.
Speaker 11 (25:39):
Absolutely, I think you kind of nailed it. So you
come out after halftime. You missed the deep ball to
get on that on that on that really good.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
He was wide up.
Speaker 11 (25:46):
We just overthrew him by a little bit. And then
we and then oh shoot that was on that was
on the other that was the Saints. But yeah, you're
a hundred percent right. We started We started the game
pretty well on the defense side of the ball. There
was a three series stretch right there where they scored
the touchdowns. And then, like you said, the interceptions kill.
You had the one in the end zone, you had
the one right here that Sirtan had. We were on
the plus side of the field. Just a little bit
(26:07):
of a little bit of a miscommunication between Bryce and
Tommy Tremble. He ran a little seven stops, sat down.
Bryce maybe thought he was going a little bit further.
But on the defensive side of the ball, I thought
like I felt like we competed, We fought really hard.
It was good to see some of these guys step up.
It's good to have Jadavian Clowney back. And then again
Demani Richardson, I felt like he was active, eat eleven
tackles a day.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
We're close.
Speaker 11 (26:30):
Like you said, it's good to have Sam Franklin back.
The fake the fake punt was wide open. They had
no idea we were doing it. We were just a
little bit off. And whether it was Sam turned the
wrong way, was it a throw? Was he supposed to
turn out? Did Johnny? Where was the throw supposed to be?
Speaker 5 (26:44):
We don't know.
Speaker 8 (26:44):
But the opportunities are right there. We just got it.
Speaker 11 (26:48):
We just have to go make him. And then it's
easy to say that. It's easy to say, hey, just
throw the ball a little bit further for Jaylen to
make the catch. It's easy to say, hey, we need
to go make one more stop on third down. But
we're close, and it's it's good to see. After halftime,
I felt like we competed really hard. They had the
touchdown on the second drive of the second half, and
other than that, I felt like we did a pretty
good job on the defense.
Speaker 8 (27:08):
Side of the ball.
Speaker 7 (27:09):
Yeah, Jake, what the Panthers are fighting is the margin
for air right now is paper thin and maybe even less.
Speaker 8 (27:17):
There's no doubt, and I think it's gonna continue to
be that way the rest of the year.
Speaker 4 (27:22):
You know.
Speaker 10 (27:23):
You get Dan Jackson last week, he's out again this week,
you know, And I don't know what's gonna happen with Deontay.
Speaker 8 (27:28):
Do we get him back, do we get Adam back?
Speaker 10 (27:30):
To go with the confidence that I'm assuming Kocher is
gonna start to play, with the confidence that Laget's gonna start,
you know, to have. But I'm like Lou, I thought
the effort was a shy tunnel. I don't know if
I could say enough about him. Two funnel recovery has
been one and one that he punched out himself in
the first drive of the game that enabled us to
go down to score. Brady Christiansen playing at center today,
(27:51):
and then Ikey has a an ankle, he has to sit,
so he goes to left tackle. You can't like those
are positive building blocks that guys that Okay, we can
win with these guys. We just we need to add
more pieces and that's gonna come at some point. But
right now, my guys are battling. You have to give them.
For a Shaan Robinson two sacks today, So you know,
Genevion Clowney, it's better when he's on the field. For
(28:14):
as Josie, it's better when they're on the field now.
Speaker 7 (28:17):
And you got some young guys from this draft class
who have a very real chance to be the foundational
layer of whatever upswing will happen in the next few years.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
And that's the hope.
Speaker 7 (28:32):
And we've seen it from Sanders, we have seen it
from Cocher today, Trevin Wallace has had its moments, Shawn Smith,
Wade starting to get some run, Demonti Richardson got the
start today, and you hope to continue to see it.
Speaker 8 (28:46):
Obviously you got Leguet in there as well.
Speaker 7 (28:48):
Hopefully a guy like Jayden Crummendy could come out and
help here in the next couple of weeks. So not
the ideal result at the end, of the day. It's
still about results, and the Panthers fall to one in seven.
But can this team now make progress over the second
half of the season. Can they continue to get better?
And when you leave things after that last game in January,
(29:12):
do you feel good about where you're heading? That's what
these last nine games are going to be about, building
toward something tangible. Final score again from Denver Broncos twenty
eight Panthers fourteen.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Back in the day, this would have been the halfway
point of the season when they played sixteen, but you
play seventeen, So the Panthers one in seven sort of
at the turn here. Next week home against New Orleans
and then what is a home game on the schedule
is actually in Munich physically when they take on the
New York Giants the week after that twenty eight to fourteen.
The Broncos win over the Panthers. When we come back,
(29:45):
we'll hear from the former Bronco turned Panther linebacker Josie
Jewell upon his return to health to be able to
play in this game. As we continue on the post
game show, you're listening to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Back to the Panthers postgame show, presuming by Southern Star
unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of
the Carolinas.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
One of the bright spots in a twenty eight fourteen
setback for the Panthers at Denver was the return to
health of Josie Jewels Mount with a hamstring injury and
got back in time to play against his former team,
the Denver Broncos. After we listened to it, I'll ask you, Gene,
what's it like when you face your former team, especially
going back to your former stadium as well. But let's
first of all, hear the conversation with the Panthers linebacker.
Speaker 7 (30:30):
We're here with Panthers linebacker Josie Jewel ten tackles today
in his return to Denver. Josie, what emotions did this
game stir for you?
Speaker 12 (30:39):
Yeah, a little bit stuff. You know, I've been here
for six years, you know, got to know a lot
of people. But at the end of the day, you
know it's coming. It's coming here to winning games, coming
here to compete. So it was cool to see some
people and stuff like that. But the goal was to
come here and win and compete. So just need to
keep on We need to keep on going every single day.
Speaker 10 (30:55):
Here, Josie, Jake Delome here, just talk a little bit
about and today getting back on the field. But now
you have Trevin Wallace on the side of what was
it like, you know, a young kid who was a
lot was thrown at him with the green dot and
then now you took over the green dot. How are
you able to help him and make him a better
play at than in essence helped the Carolina Panthers going forward.
Speaker 12 (31:15):
Yeah, I mean he's taking some great steps forward from
the first day he was here, even you know, the
first day with him having the green dot. So it's
fun to help him, and you know, he can throw
it back to you too and help you. So a
smart guy that communicate out there, and it's fun to
play with him so far. So I'm excited about the future.
Speaker 8 (31:31):
Hey, Josie Luke, I'm gonna want to go back to
the Chicago game.
Speaker 11 (31:34):
Travin makes his first start and he talked about with
us after the game how he asked you to come
on that trip, and I just think it speaks to
you and you're unselfishness and willing to help us kind
of talk about the relationship you and Trevin have.
Speaker 12 (31:45):
Yeah, it's a great relationship, you know, just like minus Shock.
The whole LB room's really close. And that's the fun
part about it. You know, we get to come, We
get to come and play it every day and compete
with our friends and guys that are close to us.
And it's not just a job, you know, it's it's
us out there and having fun. And it's good when
you have that and when you have your players that
you enjoy being around. And he's just another one of
(32:06):
those guys, you know, a kind, harder guy that goes
out there and gives it us all every day and
that's all you can ask for.
Speaker 7 (32:10):
Great, thank you, Josie. This game at halftime, you're down
twenty one to seven. Second half. Uh, there was never
any quit. There was never any drop off an effort.
You saw the play at the end where you guys
force the fumble near the goal line. What does that
say about what this locker room is at its core?
Speaker 12 (32:29):
Yeah, we just don't I mean you already saw it.
We don't want to give up, and we have our
friends by a side. We got our guys, our teammates
by a side, and we don't want to let anybody down,
and that's something we got to keep on striving the
rest of the year. You know, the record is not
what we want it to be, but we got to
keep on competing and you know, keep on trying to
get that next win and just keep on trying to
you know, gather ourselves and and get better every single day,
(32:49):
one percent better.
Speaker 7 (32:50):
Josie, thank you, appreciate y'all.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
And you GI's gonna ask you too about what it's
like as a player going back against your former team. Obviously,
when you go back and you lose, Yeah, he doesn't
feel that great. Oh yeah, but I would think when
it does go well for you, that's gotta be a
great feeling too, right.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
Well, yeah, he I mean he was around the ball
and so you know, he made some plays, there's no
doubt about that, and he's gonna be excited about getting
back there and then he wants to show well, you know,
there's nothing better than beating your former team.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
You just you just want to win.
Speaker 4 (33:22):
And so you know, I'm glad he got a chance
to meet see the people back there and he got
to renew some old relationships and whatnot.
Speaker 5 (33:29):
But make no mistake.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
He wanted to win that game big time, and so unfortunately, uh,
we're not good enough defensively or offensively to go ahead
and mount that the challenge that we need to do
to be extremely competitive. Yeah, I feel for them because
I've been in that situation with teams where man, it's snowballs.
(33:50):
You know, there's nothing looks good. If the defensive line
is rolling, the secondary is not rolling, secondary is don't
looking good, but the linebackers are slouching, or you know,
it's just just nothing is cohesive. Now, it doesn't mean
that you give up, and it doesn't mean that you
have any quit because the team obviously doesn't have any
quit that he enunciated and articulated extremely well. However, they're
(34:12):
not making enough plays to make a difference.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Yeah, and you thought, with some of these veterans coming
back today, be better, and I guess technically it was.
It was forty last week, twenty eight this week, but
still not enough to get close enough to threaten the Broncos,
who win twenty eight to fourteen. Coming up, we'll hear
from the head coach Dave Canalis will give you another
scoreboard update and more to come here as we continue
on the Southern Star Bourbon postgame Show, and you're listening
(34:35):
on the Carolina Panthers Radio network. Edinburg Broncos twenty eight
to fourteen over the Carolina Panthers, who lost their fifth
game in a row, fall to one and seven on
the season overall. Coach Dave Canals always part of the
Southern Star Bourbon postgame Show.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Let's hear his comments with the guys in the booth.
Speaker 7 (34:57):
We're joined by Panthers head coach Canalis. David isesch here
uh Jalen Cocher continues to just make the most of
his opportunities. What does this team have with the young rookie.
Speaker 13 (35:11):
You got a guy that's just growing every week in
terms of just his setups and the execution. But you know,
he just keeps making plays when he gets his opportunities.
And that's, you know, that's what we're looking for. We're
looking for guys to step up and make those plays
when we're counting on them.
Speaker 7 (35:24):
I know you still have to look at the tape,
but what's your assessment of how Bryce played today?
Speaker 13 (35:30):
The first drive was fantastic. I think once we got
into the middle of it, there, you know we had
you know, just a string of like three and outs,
you know, like we didn't get our first first down
for about seven or eight drives in there. So you know,
it's about finding you know, the past game that he
can be aggressive with, that he can rip making sure
that our run game is still efficient. You know, that
was an area that you know, I didn't feel was
(35:52):
was our best that we can do. And then you know,
I think just you saw on there, just some of
the communication things I got to get to play in sooner,
Pryce got to handle the play, get our guys lined up,
and all that something we can certainly improve this week.
Speaker 10 (36:03):
Yeah, coach, is Jake here, That's what I was gonna ask.
Was there something with the coach to quarterback cad set?
Seemed like Bryce was having a little trouble getting the
plays in, you know, Jake.
Speaker 13 (36:11):
There was only one where I kind of cut out
on him. The other ones really were just getting the
play call in, you know, the personnel the play call
in with in a timely fashion, so that he could
feel confident about getting the call out, getting the guys
to the line, so we can evaluate all the things,
you know, and just our whole operation. We just got
to improve that we got to get better at, you know,
getting up, getting lined up, making the protection calls and operating,
(36:33):
you know, and you know, again just tip of the
cap to the Broncos and the noise. You know that
obviously makes it challenging, but something that we have to
be able to function with.
Speaker 10 (36:40):
Yeah, Coach, one more thing like so watching today watching
A'shawn Robinson get two sacks, Brady Christiansen going from center
to left tackle and not missing a beat on the
ninety eight yard drive. But shy tuttle talk about a
veteran who had to punch out fumble recovery, another fumble recovery.
Speaker 8 (36:56):
Late in the game.
Speaker 10 (36:57):
Just the never say die attitude that that they're playing with,
that this team's playing with because we understand all the
injuries that we're having in the battles that we're going through.
Speaker 13 (37:05):
Jake, I appreciate you saying that I can't be more
proud of this group for battling the whole time, you know,
all the way down to the last drive, for both
the defense and the offense. To just just give us
more time to keep playing ball, keep trying to find
an identity of how to win games. You know, and
the effort is there, the heart is there these guys,
and I can't be more proud, But again, there's a
bunch of stuff that we still got to clean up.
Speaker 11 (37:26):
Coach Luke here just kind of jumping on what Jake
was saying. Just the effort in playmaking from some of
these younger guys. Obviously Demani Richardson stepped in there, Nick
Scott obviously missed today, and then Trevin Wallas to punch
out at the end. Just these guys are starting to
make plays in games and build confidence.
Speaker 13 (37:41):
Absolutely, man, we got to celebrate those We got to
celebrate the things that look like us, the style of
football that we want to play. We got to continue
to build on those things, clean up the things that
we're struggling with, and just kind of take the next
step together. And this is a locker room that's together
right now, fighting and battling and scratching to try to
figure it out. Coaching staff as well, just returning to
the uh, you know, returning to the locker room, returning
(38:02):
to the game planning and trying to put our guys
in the best situation to be successful.
Speaker 7 (38:05):
Dave appreciate it as always, Thank you, Thanks guys.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
All right, that's the Panthers coach Dave Canalis. I'm just
kind of scrolling Twitter a little bit here as we're
sitting here to Eugene and Sam Franklin said, I'm reading
a Joe person tweet. Some of the Panther players felt
like Sean Payton was trying to run the score up
and embarrass the defense at the end of the game.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
It's one of those things like stop them stop. I
was going to say you, that's up to you to stop.
Speaker 5 (38:29):
That's on you to stop them.
Speaker 4 (38:31):
You're gonna tell this was used to be all my
point offensively, when guys who don't get a chance to
get in the game get a chance to getting the game,
they want to score. They've been practicing all week. They
want to score. They want to go ahead and eat.
And so if they playing against a team that they
can score on, well guess what they're gonna that's what
they're gonna try to do. And so this is not
a thing that you go ahead and say, hey, we
(38:52):
give you mercy rules and we you stop them. Your
job is to stop them.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
Now, if it's high school, if it's pop warners different.
But this is this is the highest level professionally paid man.
Speaker 4 (39:03):
We are paid very very well to stop people. And
if you don't want him to run a score, then
you do something about it. You do something about it.
And I love Franklin's game. I think he's a beast.
I think that young man can play some ball. But
do something about it. If you you want to do it,
do something about it. You have opportunity out there. Those
downs that you get, first, second, third down, you got
(39:23):
time to go ahead and make a difference. And if
you don't want to go ahead and make the difference,
don't expect their coach to go ahead and ease up.
Speaker 5 (39:30):
I wouldn't ease up.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
And I don't think it's about I could be wrong.
I don't think it's about embarrassing. I think the Panthers
are working with Jalen Cocher late in the game, trying
to develop. I think you're working on stuff to come
back for later and to show maybe some you know,
talk about not trying to show stuff. I think sometimes
you do try to show stuff on tape to make
other teams have to waste their time preparing for something
that they'll never have to deal with exactly.
Speaker 5 (39:49):
So that's when coach.
Speaker 4 (39:50):
When when coach Payton did that double pass and through
the ball right and you collect this, well, why is
he doing a double pass? Well, why not do a
double pass to work on it so that every other
team has to to prepare for your double pass. And
now maybe you make it a triple pass, and maybe
you don't go across the other side of the field.
But this time you give it back to the quarterback
and you do something different. You're doing it because you're
trying to go ahead and set things up, because you realize,
(40:13):
we got this game in hand, so let's go ahead
and work on some things that we can go ahead
and work on it.
Speaker 5 (40:19):
That's what we do in preseason, that's what we do
in practice. You work on stuff.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
And so I'm saying, don't get mad because he's looked
like he's running up the score because they look like
they could have put more points on the board and
they didn't put more the and that was because you
guys punched the ball out you stop them from putting
actually and some more points on the Board's that's great, commendable.
Absolutely love it. Love the way you think. But it's
(40:47):
not my job to worry about what the office is
doing the other coach is doing. To go ahead and
have a mercy role. That's not my job. My job
is you stop the people and you keep points off
the board and give the ball back to the offense.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
Yeah, good words, all right. We will take a time
out here.
Speaker 3 (41:01):
When we come back, we'll update the scoreboard for you
once again, and more to come as we continue here.
The Broncos win over the Panthers twenty eight to fourteen.
You're listening to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.

(41:48):
one nil in the first half. Are you a soccer guy.
He've been following the Charlotte fe ce. Yes, and that's
the best of three. So they have a home match
coming up regardless of what happens tonight on Friday, and
hopefully'll be able to pulled this one out. They had
way in right, I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah. So having
a good season good for them. So elsewhere we do
now have the Sunday night game underway. A couple of
(42:10):
minutes into it, Cowboys and forty nine Ers are scoreless.
Eagles win over the Bengals thirty seven to seventeen. The
Browns top the Ravens twenty nine twenty four with Jamis
Winston quarterback. Detroit rolls to a fifty two fourteen win
over the Tennessee Titans. Cardinals twenty eight Dolphins twenty seven
to a tongue of to a tongue of byloa back
for the Dolphins, unable to get the win though. In
this game, the Patriots lose Drake made to a concussion
(42:33):
and it was Jacoby Brissett stepping in.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
They win.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
The Patriots over the Jets twenty five twenty two. Kirk
Cousins four touchdown passes for Atlanta over Tampa Bay thirty
one to twenty six. Packers over the Jaguars thirty to
twenty seven. Texans beat the Colts twenty three to twenty.
Chargers win over the Saints twenty six to eight. The
Panthers will be hosting New Orleans coming up on Sunday.
We'll see if it's still Spencer Rattler or if Derek
(42:56):
Carr returns. By then, Buffalo wins at Seattle thirty one
to ten. Chiefs win over the Vegas Raiders twenty seven
to twenty, and the Commanders. Then the finish of the day. Wow,
Jayden Daniels ball was in there for sixty five yards
eighteen to fifteen. They beat the Bears on a hail
Mary at the end, and.
Speaker 5 (43:12):
The secondary knew immediately that man we missed up rough row.
Speaker 3 (43:17):
Row five five guys along the defensive picket fence there
at the goal line. They all jump like it's almost
like pop border where everybody runs the ball. All five
of them jumped to the ball at the same time.
Speaker 4 (43:28):
Yeah, it was definitely like T ball when the kids
hit the T ball and every kid come out of
every nook and cranny from everywhere and they chased the
ball that's what it looked like and.
Speaker 5 (43:38):
What you typically do. You spread out. You have one
designated jumper.
Speaker 4 (43:43):
That person jumps and everybody else plays for the tip
oh to knock the ball down just in case the
ball is tipped so high.
Speaker 5 (43:48):
In that case it did not happen.
Speaker 2 (43:51):
Tough way to lose, a tough way to lose the game,
tough way to learn a lesson.
Speaker 5 (43:55):
But you know that's right.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
Commanders approved to six and two.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
With that Hail Mary segment coming up, we'll be making
the selection of our hardest working player of the game,
brought to you by Sun Belt Reynolds. That's coming up
as we wrap things up Following a twenty eight fourteen
Panthers loss at Denver, and you're listening to Panthers Football

Easy One, Who got easy? It's Cocher. It's easy.
Speaker 4 (45:36):
Cocher is making a name for himself. He's been playing exceptionally.
He played well today. Four catches, seventy eight yards. He
was electric, and I would like to see more of Cocher.
And we heard that from David Calatis that hey, he's
been earning some playing time and he's been playing, uh
particularly well.
Speaker 3 (45:54):
Four catches, seventy eight yards, a touchdown for an undressed
lovey out of Holy Cross. All right, final piece of business,
a final thought, give us, give us some inspiration as
we head into a new week.
Speaker 4 (46:03):
Okay, it doesn't matter like how many people you have out,
It doesn't matter if football is not predicated on your
super duper stars. It's predicated on the people that you
have in there. The guys have to do their job,
all right, And so when I see the edges compromise defensively,
that that's an alarming bell for me. When I see
(46:25):
not blocks being sustained officers or not pushing the defense
off the line of scrimmage as we can, then that's
alarming to me. And so I don't care who's the
quarterback back there. This is always a team effort in
a team game, and you gotta do your job. And
Sam Franklin, I'm gonna go back to what you said.
The report that we heard about maybe coach Peyton running
(46:48):
up the score, do do something about it. You have
an opportunity to do something about it, because if you don't,
I'm saying, joke, this will not be the same team.
They'll be plenty of jobs that will be lost because
of the play of the Carolina Panthers today.
Speaker 5 (47:04):
There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 3 (47:06):
And by the way, Sean Payne's got a history with this,
so it's not like you know, you kind of know
going in if you get in that position, he's gonna
keep he puts it into your neck.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
I mean, he's gonna put his neck.
Speaker 4 (47:15):
And here's the thing, we're not. We're not that bad,
we really aren't. You just got to make the plays
when they come to you. And there's a lot of
places we can point out where the play came to
you and you didn't make the play, which would have
changed it. You got to play clean, as we've been
hearing people, and so when you don't, this is what
you get. And there's nothing good when you lose, there's
nothing there for anyone, nothing at all. But when you win,
(47:38):
there's a bounty of booty there for everybody. Not the bounty,
not the booty.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
You know that always fun to work with, you no doubt,
no marey what we're doing Pop Warner game. I don't
care anything. It's always fun.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
