Panthers postgame show presented by Southern Star, an official bourbon
of the Carolina Panthers. Celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas

(00:48):
Football season is underway. How about that?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yes it is.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Panthers took on the Patriots tonight. Patriots went at seventeen
to three. We saw none of the starters play in
this ball game, but that's okay.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Hey.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
We got a chance to watch the new kickoff rule,
which is interesting.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Which interesting. Actually, I actually liked the kickoff rule.

Speaker 5 (01:06):
I think that is gonna save people from injuries, and
I think it's gonna make a little bit exciting.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
It was interesting.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
We had a chance this week as Eugene Robinson. Mike
Pachico's here also had a chance to listen to the
NFL officials this week talk to some about why they
went with this new rule and just to kind of
inside I say, inside baseball, that's another sport inside football,
they said, looking at last year and in an interest
of safety, last year they said almost no kickoffs will return,

(01:36):
so many were big and booted out of the end zone.
So they're trying to bring the kickoff back into the
game as something that the fans will watch interesting to see,
bring some action back into the game, and.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yet minimize the distance so that you can't hurt each other.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
That's right, Yeah, that's why they're trying to bring the
closer together.

Speaker 6 (01:55):
But the trade off is the onside kick is kind
of a casualty because you have to now announce so
you're gonna do it, and then you have to stick
with it.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
So yeah, that's kind of mess up. Yeah, that was
always a surprise. Yeah, could be.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
So we'll see how that it all plays out.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
But I mean I think it's you know, we saw
a couple of decent returns tonight, but what we didn't see,
Eugene Robinson, it was the starters yeah, and.

Speaker 7 (02:16):
Here it is.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
I you know, in the fact that I'm an old
school guy, and since I'm old school, I want to
see the starters play at least a quarter. You get
used to playing, you get used to seeing a different team.
You're trying to find out where you fit, where you belong, chemistry,
all that stuff. Uh So I am a proponent of

(02:39):
play the starters at least a quarter, maybe a quarter
and a half. Get some get some uh some rust,
get some rust off off of you. And that's always
been an old school Chuck Knox, that's always been a thing.
So for me, when I see it, I'm like, I
think it's a missed opportunity. I think it's a missed
opportunity for I used to go ahead and see some

(03:01):
real live action and have somebody in his face and
deliver that ball in two point seven seconds like coach
wants them to get that rock out. So I thought
it was maybe a lost opportunity.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
But I'm old school that Mike could sound like Dave
Canal has had a real hard time coming due to
a decision this week.

Speaker 6 (03:16):
Oh absolutely. I mean he's talked about how you know,
in his past he's done it both ways he's seen it,
the way that Eugene has has talked about and kind
of the I'd say it's more of a new fangled way,
like it's becoming more and more popular where you tend
to sit most of your starters. Now, Jacobe precept for
the Patriots did have like a series I think, and.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Then he had a couple of series something else he.

Speaker 6 (03:35):
Did and then and then they came out. So you know,
I see both sides of it, both sides of it.
But I do think what what puts me in kind
of more with what Eugen's talking about is I think
there is that you hear this all the time, right,
there's this practice, and there's game speed, and game speed
can only be replicate. You can't repla you can't replicate

(03:55):
it have to do to practice. So and you know
when you'll get there was also thirty place that didn't
play today. So I don't know this this this isn't
something that you should glean from and say this is
going to be what this team's gonna look like. I mean,
it's a completely different animal and so and I think
we will see. I think it's a little bit nebulous
right about. I mean it looks like he might not

(04:16):
rice them. The first team might not play, But there
is that possibility that maybe they would go in the
third game, maybe do like a series or two in
the in the third game, just to kind of build
up into that.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Yeah, I say that's possible. I know. I say, you
put your guys out there. You you for me.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
You're new new coachs coming to a new system, and
you want to see what you got, and you don't
want to see what you got, in my opinion, the
first game of the season, and go, oh, I didn't know. Oh,
maybe I shouldn't thrown that route. Oh maybe we should
go ahead of scale that back. Maybe the waggles that
we were doing and the bootlegs, maybe that might not
be working. So we should do it a different personnel.
Maybe it may work, maybe it doesn't work. And so

(04:54):
I think there's a misopportunity to go ahead and really
get your first guys out there and see where you fit.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
How much is this week's practice with the Jets gonna
help you do some of that.

Speaker 5 (05:05):
You cannot you cannot duplicate, you know, game game conditions
practice is still is gonna be scripted. Yeah, you're gonna
go against each other. Yeah, you're gonna have some fights
out there and they're gonna talk about that.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
But it's scripted. Great.

Speaker 5 (05:23):
Maybe the defensive backs of the receivers, that's probably one
of the truer things because you're covering one on one.
That's maybe truer maybe. But everything is scripted. Seven and
seven is scripted. Nine on seven is scripted past pros
Bliss period. Everything is scripted. So it's not the same.
It's just not the same. Yeah, you get you know
it's a different team, but it's not the same.

Speaker 6 (05:45):
And you know it's coming, right, So for the most part,
you have an understanding of what's gonna be coming in
a game. Sometimes you don't write so and and that's
why games are games, because they mean because you don't know.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
You don't know.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
And that's the and that's the great thing about having
a coach canalis here, which you have an element of surprise.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
Go ahead and put your office.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
Remember I think last last year we were talking about,
you know, coach Reich was waiting to go ahead and
say I'm gonna beat Vanilla, I'm gonna I'm like.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
Dude, do your stuff. This is where you do it.

Speaker 5 (06:17):
This is where you actually put it in preseason, say
it because everybody will get film on you. Everybody's gonna
watch what you do. So you have a chance to
go ahead, have a dress rehearsal and it's free and
nobody not as free. But yeah, you gotta just for her.
I'm a big old school guy.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Do it.

Speaker 8 (06:38):
Man.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
You need to have you guys out there, all.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Right, we got a lot coming your way here.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Over the next hour, we're gonna talk to hey, coach
Dave Canals. We'll hear from him. We'll get the final
thoughts from the booth as well. We'll go over other
scores from around the National Football League today, and we'll
give our sun Belt hardest working player of the game
as well. To stay with us on the Carolina Panthers
Radio Network and welcome back to Back in America Stadium

(07:05):
along Eugene Robinson, Mike Pachico, Brett McMillan. Panthers fall to
the Patriots seventeen to three in their preseason openers tonight.
This is the Panthers post game show, presented by Southern
Star and official bourbon of the Carolina Panthers. Celebrate the
spirit of the Carolinas. This driver around the league, brought
to you by your Honda Dealers of the Carolina. Is
only one other game in the NFL tonight, and in

(07:26):
that game, the New York Giants beat Detroit seven or
fourteen to three?

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Was that game?

Speaker 3 (07:32):
So the only other game being played tonight, full slate
of action throughout the league. Only the Hall of Fame
game last week, But now everybody's getting a chance to
play some ball. We talked earlier about the fact that
the Jets will be practicing with the Panthers this week.
Did you like having another team to in a practice.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
I thought that was another way to have somebody else
and beat up on other people other than beat up
on your guys. But once again, everything is scripted too,
so that it's a good thing for you because okay
is different and then you get that partisan thing like okay,
you get to mind geared up ready for battles. So
I think that's the greatest thing about it.

Speaker 6 (08:09):
But it's scripted, and I think there's also kind of
a teamwork element too, because now to your point, Eugene,
I mean, you're not just you know, beating the guy
in front of you who's your teammate. Now you actually
have somebody else that you know, you can go against,
and it's also an opportunity to to uh, you know,
for a lot of these guys that we saw tonight,
it's an opportunity for them to continue to show their wares.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
And you can't hit the quarterbacks. Quarterbacks so have all
the protections.

Speaker 5 (08:33):
So you know, there's some receivers that have protection with
different jerseys on, you know, and so forth and so on.
But you kind of get to go against each other
in the trenches a little bit and maybe you have
some one on one things that you typically won't get,
you know, and have the same intensity in the practice.

Speaker 6 (08:49):
But I think it's good for the fans too, because
you know, when they're coming out to the training game,
it's if you come up to training camp three or
four times, now you get to see something different because
you're kind of seeing some of the same guys going
against each the same.

Speaker 4 (08:59):
Yeah, I think it's I've always enjoyed that.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
It's something I enjoyed, but it does it kind of
pells the comparison to having a real.

Speaker 6 (09:08):
Game, and I think would be what's kind of neat
is when it's a team that you're not going to
play that season.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
Yeah, and that's been that's you know, that's different this
year because the three teams the Panthers are playing in
the in the exhibition season, all AFC East teams, and
none of them are on the schedule this year. Have
you guys liked having training camp in Charlotte this year?

Speaker 2 (09:25):
I mean, we all.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
I think everyone's got a soft spot for Spartanburg and
and that was I mean, but the thing is, that's
kind of talking about Gene old school NFL.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
That was kind of old school NFL.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
I think most teams do not go away anymore to
college campuses elsewhere.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
In practice.

Speaker 5 (09:41):
When I was in Seattle, we went up to Eastern Washington,
you know, down in Greenberg Field. I know you're down
at Saint Norbert's College, that you're there and you're back
and forth of the stadium. But yeah, most teams were
at different locations. But I kind of like the fact
that now is brought back here at home here in
Charlotte that haven't pract this one. I think it makes

(10:02):
you a little bit more accessible to your family. If
you know, if you're you know, you're old and bore,
established you you have more access to your family and whatnot.
So that's standpoint, and I think it also allows you
to go ahead and fall in love with the Carolina's
fall over here with Charlotte.

Speaker 6 (10:16):
Well, and I think the other thing too is you know, uh,
training camp has changed. You know, you know when they
were doing this thirty years ago, maybe you know you
had a job in the off season and this was
an opportunity to meld. Now you're doing stuff as a team,
you know, as early as March. So so you're already
doing that team building. You don't need to go somewhere
to do it.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
Yeah, absolutely, And so facilities are.

Speaker 6 (10:37):
Better, and your facilities here are going to be a
lot better than going to some other place potentially.

Speaker 5 (10:41):
And it might be a little bit more cost effective
to do it here at home, you know, because you've
got you have already had an infrastructure in place.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
You used to do two days, which I think are
not allowed anymore.

Speaker 6 (10:53):
Yeah, no, well, the next you can, I think, I
think the second one just has to be walked through.

Speaker 4 (10:56):
You have to be a walk through.

Speaker 9 (10:57):
No two.

Speaker 5 (10:58):
Some teams will have three days because we have a
special teams practice. We would do a practice in the morning,
padded practice. We have a walk through with the special
teams and at night we have another padded practice.

Speaker 4 (11:09):
That's done.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Done.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
You can't do that anymore. That's that is, that's actiquated.

Speaker 6 (11:13):
And that seems to be the way of all levels
of football, not just just.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Because they trying to save your legs.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
If I was under this regime, under this uh, this protocol,
you know, I played sixteen years. You say, you would
have said some years off my body. I could have
played a years.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Sitting here, maybe it is eight.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
Yeah, I can hit them, I can get over there.
But yeah, but it's it's a little it's a little
different story.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Now it's a uh plays from the night's ball game.
Will have those and we come back. You're listening to
Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Postgame show preseemly by Southern Star unofficial bourbon of the
Carolina Panthers. Celebrate the spirit of the La.

Speaker 10 (12:00):
So Ree give straight up the Middle touchdown, Touchdown, Carolina.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Reaction and analysis to tonight's game with special guests, highlights
and updates from around the league.

Speaker 10 (12:12):
Complete touchdown, right side next the catch touchdown Panthers Now,
what how about it?

Speaker 8 (12:18):
Now?

Speaker 9 (12:19):
What?

Speaker 8 (12:19):
No?

Speaker 1 (12:20):
To Brettfatilla with the Panthers Postgame Show exclusively on the
Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
And welcome back to the Panthers Postgame Show presented by
Southern Star. Glad to have you with us here along
with Gene Robinson, Mike Pachico, Brett McMillan, glad to have
you with us. Let's go ahead and have them to
the highlights of them today's ballgame, and it was not
a very good ballgame for the rookie Jack Plumber.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
He got welcome to the NFL rather rudely right out
of the box.

Speaker 9 (12:54):
Plumber, the rookie quarterback out of Louisville, undrafted at twenty
one touchdowns, twelve interception last year. Four Louisville back to
throw U four receiver.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Sat steps up. PRIs sure, but behind and down he goes. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
I think he found out, especially in the first half guys,
that he really needed to get rid of the ball faster.
And that's something you hear it over and over again
about the difference in this level of play, how much
faster things happen. You can't hold the ball as long
as you did. You're not going to outrun guys the
way you were able to do in college getting away

(13:32):
from defenders. And I think I think Jack looked a
little bit. He looked better in the second half. I
think he was adjusting a little bit better, but the
first half he really struggled.

Speaker 5 (13:42):
Here's another thing also, what the quarterback has to worry
about about getting the ball out, quicker. I understand two
point seven two point eight, that's what you want to
be around anything around three point two typically you're getting sacked.
The other thing is the receivers have to get open, right,
I mean so and catch the ball. Yeah, and catch
the rock because there were some opportun tune of these
when Plumber stepped up in the pocket, bow through that

(14:05):
little slant, drop, through that little inner rout to Mingo dropped.
I mean so, yes, you've got to get the ball out, quicker.
But the receivers have a responsibility. It's to get off
and get into their route and get where they need
to be so that when that ball is delivered in
that two point seven eight seconds, that there's someone that
target to throw the ball to. So if you have

(14:26):
to pull the ball down and there's a guy in
your face. And also the offensive line have to do
their job, because we saw offensive line that was a
little bit more porous. The quarterback was under duress most
of the time, so he's gonna hold on to the
ball because he's looking to escape to make sure he
can find that window. So that was a lot of
stuff that Plumber was happening to face today.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
And I'm wondering, Mike, because this is not the first
team offensive line, and we talk about mixing and matching
guys in the offensive line and how important it is
for an offensive line to be able to stay together,
and basically you know what the guy next to you
is thinking without even talking to him. I wonder how
how much of a factor that was, because these are
not guys who have probably practiced as a unit well.

Speaker 6 (15:06):
And it looked to me, you know, like a lot
of times, at all different levels, you know, a lot
of times the defense might look like it's a little
bit ahead of the offense. And I think that was
the case tonight where the defense, you know, and typically
that doesn't right. Yeah, And so I think I think
that proves your point. Like I think that was a
case of you know, they you know, they've known that
this was gonna be the strategy for a couple days.
So I'm sure there were some more reps. But you know,

(15:28):
an offense and I think we've talked about this in
years past, and you know, Jean as a musician, will
agree with me. I mean, offense is more like an orchestra,
whereas defense is kind of more like a rock band.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (15:39):
So like the orchestra has to practice and practice and practice.
I mean that's how you get to Carnegie Hall, right,
and you practice. So but a rock band you could
kind of put together some guys that, you know, a
drummer and a guitarist and a singer and have at
it and have at it.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
Yeah, you can.

Speaker 5 (15:52):
That's a great analogy too, because typically the office is
always behind the defense. Defense always had an offense, uh
in prese in the beginning of the season. However, the
more the offense plays together, then that just eradicates itself
and next thing, you know, the offices of Juggernaut powerhouse
like Kansas City Chiefs.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
Well, I think I think I'm gonna give the hardest
working player of the Game, presented by sun Belt Rentals,
the official rental equipment partner of the Carolina Panthers, to
this guy who was in the backfield.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
All day long, hustling a running back.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
He was about the only running back to play today.

Speaker 4 (16:32):
Touch back.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
After the punch into the end zone, Jack.

Speaker 9 (16:34):
Plumber continue his year in the first quarter and off
the left side, Boom's got a room around the left
corner around twenty five to the thirty and should have
the first Panthers first.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Down of this game.

Speaker 9 (16:44):
And he does up to the thirty one yard then
he picks up eleven.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Yeah, that was Mike Boone, guy who's basically joined the
Panthers in the practice squad at the end of last season.
Guy's been kind of a journeyman around the National Football League.
Had eight carries for thirty four yards today average four
point three yards of carry, and he was you know,
he also had let's see, he had a couple of
catches as well. Uh like, try to look to see
what the stats are on that. Uh yeah, I had

(17:09):
two catches, no yard and I'm sorry, Uh I thought
he had a couple of kid. Yeah, he had four
catches three catches for thirteen yards in the game. So
you know, the guy guy worked hard today. He spent
a lot of time in there, and we didn't see,
you know, the running backs we expect to see. We
didn't see Schuba Hubbard in there today. We didn't see

(17:29):
Miles Sanders in there today. We didn't see Rashiem Black
or Raheem black Scher in there today. So this guys
spend a lot of time in there, worked hard.

Speaker 5 (17:36):
Yeah, he did and did in another candidate we could
have got gotten the uh. That other star the uh.
The play of the game, if you will is Liota.
I thought that he at that linebacker spot. I thought
he did a great, great job. He put a lot
of pressure on the quarterback and he had a couple
of bull rushes on the on the tackle. Typically you
don't bull rush to tackle if you defen is yes,

(17:59):
but not lying backers. You don't bull rush the tackle.
And he kind of reminded me of what not Brian Burgs.
What was the other guy that was here? He went
to Philadelphia after he left. Hasn Reddick kind of reminded
me of Son Reddick. That kind of a guy to
get in your face.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
A little bit.

Speaker 6 (18:14):
I think Alex Cook in the secondary he ended up
with five tackles. I mean some of the I thought
the one one bright spot not the one but one
bright spot on the defense I thought was to play
the secondary.

Speaker 5 (18:23):
Oh absolutely, we we You know, I thought the secondary
would be one of the weakest spots this year because
of Derek Brown. You got a lot that you could
build around him. How what I saw with the backups.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
But I saw what.

Speaker 5 (18:36):
Jackson and Jameisson and and Cook. I'm looking at these
guys like, hey, these guys are around the ball. They
were fast and they were round the ball. There was
one time that somebody got behind Jackson on a route
and he was able to recover, make a play on
the ball and turn his head so it wasn't passing
the faires. Great play, young man. And then the next

(18:57):
time he was on top of the play, they ran
a run in front of him and he knocked down
the ball. So I thought, I'm like, you know what,
secondary is doing a really really good job. And if
you coaching Gerald, you're sitting there, Okay, I could work
with some of these young guys right here. I ain't
no doubt about that. I thought they played well well.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
One of the few times that the secondary got beat
today was for the second New England touchdown, and that
was this one.

Speaker 9 (19:21):
They were shut out of their final two games in
the last regular season, and then blanked so far here
in this preseason. Gave Milton steps up in the pocket,
rows deep, got a man wide open, ten five touchdowns.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
And it's right back to that tight end Jami Jackson.

Speaker 9 (19:34):
Who gets your way downfield, takes it into the end
zone for the touchdown again on that left side.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
And that was one of the few times that you
guys talked about that the secondary got beat. Yet for
most of the game New England, they get like one
big play and then the defensive lockdown one big play,
and that's why they were kept off the scoreboard for
Brady back there.

Speaker 5 (19:53):
Yeah, of course, as it was, if I'm not mistaken,
it was the tight end that got down.

Speaker 4 (19:57):
Yeah, got down the field.

Speaker 5 (19:58):
And typically you have the defics it back or maybe
a linebacker that's covering that tight end too. So it's
not necessarily it's always when we say secondary, you have
to add into the linebackers too.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
Don't forget.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
We've always had someone like Thomas Davis or Shaq Thomas
jack Thompson covering one of the best line tight ends
out there because they can do it because they have
that speed. So I just want to make sure that
it's just not on the secondary is that entire you know,
you know, linebackers.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
And we'll take a look at the status to the
ball game coming up just a little bit later on
still ahead, we'll hear from the head coach, Dave Canalis.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
We'll also get the final thoughts from the booth as well.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
Stay with us on the Carolina Panthers Radio Network. Hey,
welcome back to the Panthers postgame show presented by Southern
Star and official purbon of the Carolina Panthers, catch the
Spirit of the Carolina as along with Mike Pachica, Gene Robinson,
Brett McMillan.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Glad to have you with us.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
Let's check some of the stats from today's ballgame. Let's
see for the Panthers, Jack Plumber was the starting quarterback,
played like three quarters. He was eleven of twenty one
eighty six yards passing no turnovers of the ball game
for either team, which was good news. And then to
the fourth quarter we had mister Luton, new to this team,
came in and you saw the difference I think in

(21:19):
some experience in the National Football League when he came
in and he's got a couple of years, he moved
the ball a little bit better. Did get the one
field goal that the Panthers had over the course of
the game. So he came in and Jake Luton he
was seven of nine for thirty eight yards and leave
the one scoring drive. In the rushing department, we talked

(21:41):
about boone eight carries forty thirty four yards. Receiving, Matthews
had three catches for forty eight yards. Smith Massett had
let's see, four catches for twenty four yards. He also
had three for thirteen and Hollister had two catches for
thirteen yards. Defensively, the leading tackler was Isbel had six

(22:06):
six tackles, five for Cook, four tackles for Jamison, Thurman
and Richardson. Two sacks in the game for the Panthers,
that was TJ. Smith and Derrick McClinton.

Speaker 6 (22:20):
Mike, what you got, Well, Statistically, it looked this game
looked like it should have been a bigger blowout than
a closer game than it was. Seventeen three obviously for
the Patriots, but Patriots had almost twice as well more
than twice first down so sixteen to seven, third don
percentage to of fourteen fourteen percent, thirty three percent five

(22:43):
of fifteen, so not much better, but a little bit
better there total yards one hundred fifty one for the
Panthers to seventy four for the Patriots. A couple areas
that showed a little bit more separation. Two penalties, nine
penalties sixty one yards Carolina, New England six for forty
five and then time of possession twenty eight minutes for
the Panthers thirty two for the pan El Patriots.

Speaker 5 (23:05):
And what concerns me when I'm talking about the offense
all of a sudden, that third do percentage, third doll
percentage tells me a lot two for fourteen fourteen percent.
That means you're not on the field long enough to
go ahead and sustain the drive. And there's no explosive place,
and there's no long jevity, No, there's no long drivers.
So when you are three and out, three and out,

(23:28):
three and out, that wears on you. So that concerns me.
And the other thing that concerns me is five sacks allowed.
Five sacks allowed. And don't forget we moved the quarterback
out the pocket. There were some bootlegs designed boot legs
out the pocket. When we see Bryce out the pocket,
it seems that the go ahead will be one of
the trends. We've seen some bootlegs, a little bit of
the waggles, and so I actually liked that, but we

(23:51):
didn't capitalize on having doing those bootlegs that you typically
look for that long strike play really down the sideline
and not right in front of you when you have
to dump it off. And so some concern for me
just a little bit offensively because third down percentage, I
want that to be somewhere around forty five percent. Forty
seven percent hovered around there, and that's that. That means

(24:14):
you have offense that's moving the ball.

Speaker 6 (24:15):
And eighteen punts combined, so ten for the Pants wow,
eight for the Patriots.

Speaker 3 (24:19):
Well, and there the Panthers did have a scoring opportunity
the first half, got down of the twenty nine yard
line of the Patriots, but then Plumber gets called for
grounding and then the next play he gets sacked for
a nine yard loss, right, and then that takes about
a field goal range back to the Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (24:36):
And let me just tell you something about the Patriots.
What they would what they did well is that they
contained the edges. It was very few times that you
that the quarterback was getting out of the pocket. He
did get out of the pocket, but that's Tighten had
to stay in the block and he was that you know,
the dump guy for the uh for the bootleg. But
typically on those sacks, the sacks was the pocket got

(24:59):
collapsed from outside alright, Russias where the quarterback was him,
did in and really couldn't get the ball off. So
I thought the Patriots did a better job of their
number twos. I'm not sure number one's twos of doing
a good job of trying to keep the quarterback correlled
in the pocket.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
Well, let's injury report brought to you by a Trim Health.
You deserve to live your best life at Atrium Health
is here to help two guys we know of that
were injured during the course of the ball game. Jaden
crummdy suffered an ankle injury and Badara Treyor was carted
back to the locker room during the course of the game.
Haven't gotten any updates on these guys injuries how serious

(25:39):
they are, so we'll keep an ear out for that
as things progress over the course of the weekend and
into next week. When things start to crank up for
the game next week with the Jets, still ahead, we'll
get final thoughts from the booth. We'll also hear from
Coach Cadal, So stay with us here on the Panthers

(25:59):
Postgame Show and Panthers Football presented by Worris Jenkins.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
Back to the Panthers postgame Show presem it by Southern Star,
unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the Spirit of
the Carolinas.

Speaker 3 (26:16):
Hey, welcome back to the Panthers' postgame Show presented by
Southern Star and official burbon of the Carolina Panthers.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Celebrate the Spirit of the Carolina.

Speaker 3 (26:23):
As the Dave Canalis era began with a seventeen to
three loss to the New England Patriots, coach told him
to have fun.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
I don't know how much fun they had.

Speaker 3 (26:30):
But you know he's going to keep up the spirit,
the positive spirit moving forward. We're going to find out
exactly what he thought about today's game as the Panthers'
locker room show begins. It's brought to you by Southern
Star and official burbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the
Spirit of the Carolinas. We head back to New England
where Jim Curtin and Kevin have caught up with the coach.

Speaker 9 (26:49):
Hi, guys, thanks and welcome back Jim, along with Kurt
and Kevin. Here Panthers preseason opener in the books that
we're joined by the head coach, Dave Canalson and day
before we even get it into the game. For you,
this is your first time on headsets as a head
coach in the NFL, the operations with your coaching staff,
and it just all the functions that come with it.
How did that turn out for you? For these four
quarters tonight?

Speaker 10 (27:10):
I thought it was great, you know, just to get
out there to again, like you said, just talking to
the different coaches in between the drives, during the drives,
getting the right information, a bunch of guys that I've
worked with before, so they kind of know what's what
I'm looking for as far as info goes. You know,
George Lee was upstairs working through the game clock management stuff,

(27:30):
and you know, we were able to take advantage of
a challenge that with all those conversations talking to the officials,
working through the penalties, giving me the scenarios. Hey it's
either this or that, you know, and just that part
was just so much fun. And you know, I think
just being able to be on the defensive side of
the headsets. That was a first for me. It was
fantastic just to hear the the consistent, methodical, even way

(27:54):
that Gerald keeps his guys locked in, and and the
way that he just you know, fed inform me to
our linebackers as they you know, got out there and
executed the calls.

Speaker 7 (28:03):
It was so cool to.

Speaker 10 (28:04):
Hear all that happen, and just the energy and the
excitement of the sideline the guys that didn't play, just
kind of being there for the guys on the field.
I just really felt that, and I was really pleased
with it.

Speaker 8 (28:16):
Hey, coach Kirk Coleman here and now I would agree
just from sitting up on the booth and I would
say the guys that weren't in I could tell there
were truly invested into the guys that were out in
the field. But just something that you and I had
talked about yesterday, just establishing the toughness of this team.
How would you evaluate it? I know it's still you
haven't watched the film and broken it down, but just
from a quick glimpse, quick reactions, how do you feel

(28:37):
do you feel like you stopped the run? Well, did
you start, Did you run the ball? Well, how would
you say the guys up front on both sides did.

Speaker 10 (28:44):
I was thrilled. You know, we were about three point six,
We were about four yards of carry at one point.
We ended up three point six on offense. Defensively, we
played really well against the run early on, and then
they got a couple out on us late in the game.
But really, Kurt, it was the physical style of play
that I was hoping to see that came to life.

(29:05):
It was guys capping off on runs. They were attacking
the ball. We didn't get one out, but it wasn't
for lack of trying guys.

Speaker 4 (29:12):
You know.

Speaker 10 (29:12):
The open field tackling I thought was pretty impressive. There
were a few that we missed, but and I'm sure
we'll get the exact count on that, but it just
felt right. The run game felt physical, you know, and
when there was space there, you know, the runners I
thought did a pretty good job in terms of just
getting downhill. The combos were working well.

Speaker 9 (29:32):
You know.

Speaker 10 (29:32):
There wasn't a lot of negative runs, which is always
kind of something I'm looking for. And the kicking units,
you know, just seeing the guys cover play physical. Some
of the gunner reps. These are invaluable reps for those
guys taking those shots. So that's one thing that I
was just kind of looking for, is to to feel
that energy in the aggression and it for me, it
certainly showed up. I thought we had some some pretty good,

(29:53):
you know, toughness and collisions that showed up today.

Speaker 7 (29:57):
Hey, Coach Canal, this is Kevin Donnley, former Carolina pan
There saw a number one fan of you right now
and really hoping for the success of this team going forward.
You know, for you, you really spoke a lot about
the mechanics of the game, the operation of the game,
how smoothly things went in and out, you know, with
the footwork, the mechanics during the actual play calling. Did

(30:18):
you feel like that's tightened up a little bit? I
know there's areas that need work, but the overall process
of especially the offensive side, getting the offense run and
getting the plays that they wanted to see tonight.

Speaker 10 (30:30):
Yeah, you know, I think that we put ourselves in
some pretty bad spots offensively. There was really it was
like the holding calls. We had a delay a game
and then we had two guys in motion there at
the last on the last drive. Procedurally, we've definitely improved,
but we got to clean it up. It's got to
be pre snap perfection to play the kind of on

(30:50):
schedule football that we want to play. But I thought
that just in general, just the calls, getting in, the
quarterbacks getting up there, you know, getting the plays off
with a good amount of time. I really felt I
saw improvement from Jack Jake, who just showed up a
couple of days ago. He's a pro. He did a
fantastic job with that. So I was pleased with it.

(31:12):
But again, I know there's a lot of growth that
needs to be had so that we can be you know,
really in our sweet spot, you know, by getting those
good second downs third and manageables to be able to
convert it. Third down was a big one. We were
I think we were two for fourteen tonight, and that's
kind of just you know, really didn't allow us to
to really get a flow in a rhythm for what
we were doing tonight.

Speaker 8 (31:31):
One last question for me, So what I saw from
the New England Patriots. They did start a lot of
the guys and then they tapered them off as the
game went on. Just kind of seeing what we saw
today as far as with not really many starters that
would actually be starting playing today, do you see next
week as as an opportunity for a lot more the
starters getting out there, just to get some of those
live reps on a real field surface with the bright

(31:53):
lights on.

Speaker 10 (31:55):
It could be you know, we have to evaluate where
our team's at in terms of just our wellness, you know,
and our health going through this week. A couple of
spots you know, got a little bit thinned out, and
so we'll have to kind of evaluate that and see
if it wouldn't be worth you know, getting them out
there for a quarter or something. It is something we're
going to talk about, you know, just over the next
couple of days and make a decision. You know, we

(32:16):
have a great opportunity with the joint practice with the
Jets to get some good working. Of course it's not
going to be live going to the ground, but it'll
be it'll be you know, they'll they'll turn it up
a not you know, going against a new opponent other
than their teammates. And so I think we're gonna have
to see Kurt because we certainly you know, may need
some of those guys.

Speaker 4 (32:34):
Yep, all right, coach.

Speaker 9 (32:35):
Yeah, big week with the Jets coming to town. We
appreciate your time. Thank you so much.

Speaker 4 (32:38):
Okay, thanks guys, thank you Coach.

Speaker 9 (32:39):
Dave Canalis there as the Panthers dropped this preseason opener
and get ready for the Jets coming up next Saturday.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
Back to show that we go now with Brett, Mike,
and Eugene.

Speaker 3 (32:48):
All right, thanks a lot, Jim, and when we come back,
I want to get Eugene and Mike's thoughts on what
they just heard from the coach. Certainly a positive guy
when you hear him talk about that, So we'll do that.
You're listening to Panthers Football presented by More Jenkins and

(33:10):
welcome back to the Panthers Post game Show presented by
Southern Star and official Bird but of the Carolina Panthers
celebrate the spirit of the Carolinas. We heard from coach
Dave Canalis in the last segment. Then, Eugene, what did
you have to think about what the coach had to say?

Speaker 5 (33:24):
You know, I agree with the coach in one respect.
He talked about the defense. He talked about how kind
of ferocious and fast the defense played.

Speaker 4 (33:32):
Well.

Speaker 5 (33:32):
I think the numbers bear out because they were able
to limit what the Patriots were doing. And I thought
they played fast. I thought there was some great up
and field tackles. I thought that the secondary was good.
So defensively, I totally agree. On the opposite side of
the ball, I think, however, that he's talking about he
talked about getting off schedule with penalties and things of
that nature.

Speaker 4 (33:54):
And also I thought he was thinking more.

Speaker 5 (33:56):
So about the coaches and the offense PC siezure of
administrations of you know, getting things on schedule in and
out the huddle, getting the play called down. It seems
to me that that also was on the agenda of
making sure that that that was working and working and
working good order, and that seemed to be working in order.

(34:18):
Now we didn't see the results of it on the
field with their actual play, but we did see some
real fast administrative stuff that you have to go ahead
and do. And so I I think that coaches, I
think he's happy with what he saw out there today,
and based on what I know what they know, I

(34:40):
think it's a good thing. So I won't take this
loss so badly, you know, offensively, if you will.

Speaker 6 (34:47):
Well, And I like what I liked about it, and
kind of adding to what Eugenie was talking about, it's
you know, I love that it was like a dress
rehearsal per se, because they're thinking ahead. They're thinking, a, well,
let's treat this as if it's a regular season NFL game,
and how we kind of administer and do things so
when we get to the first game, we're focused on

(35:07):
taking adjustments and we're not worried about, wait a minute,
how do we get this play or how do we
you know, what grouping we They're they're figuring that out now,
And I love that. And I would say this because
I know sometimes you know, we've watched a lot of
Panthers football, right, so obviously there's a it's inherently better
for us when the Panthers do well.

Speaker 4 (35:25):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (35:26):
I think sometimes in the preseason, though, it's okay to
see mistakes because those mistakes will get cleaned up.

Speaker 5 (35:31):
Absolutely, you want to, oh yeah, we want to see that.
You want to go ahead and do that dress rehearsal,
and you want to make sure that if you're going
to mess up, mess up in preseason, you don't want
to mess up in a regular season where it actually
would actually comes.

Speaker 6 (35:45):
But you don't want everything to look great, and there's
really some flaws behind the surface exactly.

Speaker 5 (35:49):
And that's why I think that you that I like
Kirk Coleman's question, Coach, well, we mightctually see some of
these other guys. He's like, well, have we kind of
banged up a little bit, We're going to get a
low ride play if it warrants it. I get it,
But there is such an advantage to your point of you.
Seeing it live is totally different and getting in shape

(36:11):
live and making the tackle. You know, he let me
just see something. Some football players are afraid to tackle,
you know, they close the eyes. Do they close their
eyes to make a hit, or they put their head
down and they'll get hitting the head. Seeing that in
a in a preseason and making sure that you keep
your eyes up and puts it with the way your
new tackle, with the road tackles that they're doing, you

(36:31):
want to be able to do those things correctly.

Speaker 4 (36:33):
I don't want to do it on the very first.

Speaker 5 (36:35):
Game if I haven't done it, if I'm Xavier Woods,
because you're not getting it in practice.

Speaker 6 (36:40):
Because quarter speed is different than full speed.

Speaker 5 (36:42):
Absolutely, So I would like to see those guys at
least play a quarter coach. If you know, and I
know you maybe not want to. You guys have to
make the decision.

Speaker 6 (36:50):
But the table, you know what I mean, Like, I
think it's still something that they're considering.

Speaker 3 (36:55):
Yeah, well, you guys talking about it, maybe think about
you know, this is Dave Canalis's first time as a
head coach, and you know, for him to talk about
being on the headsets to listen to the defense, maybe
think about you guys both know how many people know.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
I went to Virginia Tech and a.

Speaker 3 (37:11):
Couple of years ago Brent Pry took over it had
been defensive coordinator at Penn State, and two years ago
he took over as a head coach for the first time,
and there were a lot of mistakes made during the
course of game management, mistakes that he had to learn
how to deal with, or some responsibilities he had to

(37:31):
seed because he had to understand that I can't do
this now because I'm now a head coach. I need
to be worried about what's going on with the clock,
or I need to have somebody else watching the clock.
These were things he had to learn as he was
going through being a head coach for the first time and.

Speaker 4 (37:47):
That's a great observation.

Speaker 3 (37:48):
So I mean, I think that Dave Canalis is gonna
he's finding the same thing, and he's talking about finding
that now in the preseason, as opposed to you know,
you don't need you don't need him trying to figure
this out and worried about clock management once the game
regular season starts, having somebody else designated worry about things.

Speaker 5 (38:07):
And we complimented coaching Jerrold too, which I thought was
really apropos because you see what they do defensively, and
you're listening in and hearing all the going back and
hearing them make the adjustments during that time, and then
you see the product that coach of Jerrold put on
a field. That defense was fast, that second defense was
never fast. They played extremely well in my opinion.

Speaker 3 (38:27):
Yeah, and I thought it's gonna be interesting to see
what happens the improvement, you know, but it was seen
next week and the week after before the regular season starts, certainly,
and you've heard the players talk about it when they
talked to Sheer during the course of the game on
the sideline.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
He's a positive guy.

Speaker 3 (38:48):
They like his attitude, they like the positivity he brings
and you could hear it. Even in the postgame interview.
You heard how he's an uplifting he's a positive guy.

Speaker 4 (38:58):
I was in Seattle not too long go.

Speaker 5 (39:00):
I was going to visit ken Easily golf tournament, that
whole type of thing, all that stuff that being up
the Seattle. Every person I talked to told me, you're
gonna love coach Canalis. You're gonna love Coach Canalis. You're
gonna love c from people who are players, to people
who were staffed, people who were in the front office
and left him, was under his regime a little bit
and said, oh, you're gonna love this guy.

Speaker 4 (39:21):
This guy is so positive and he's a brilliant mind.

Speaker 5 (39:24):
That was the scouting report I got from people in
Seattle talking about coach Canalis.

Speaker 4 (39:30):
I was like, Wow, glad we got him.

Speaker 2 (39:32):
Yep, it's interesting to see.

Speaker 3 (39:34):
All Right, when we come back, we will have final
thoughts from the guys up in New England. But first
we're gonna pause ten seconds for station identification on the
Carolina Panthers Radio Network. Final thoughts ahead, you're listening to
the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (39:52):
Back to Bret McMillan with more of the Panthers postgame
show pre see him by Southern Star unofficial bourban of
the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit up in Carolinas.

Speaker 3 (40:06):
Hey, welcome backlong with the Gene Robinson, Mike Pachico, Brett McMillan.

Speaker 2 (40:10):
Panthers fall seventeen to three as.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
We rejoined the Panthers postgame show presented by a Southern
Star and official bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the
spirit of the Carolina's We're going to head right now
back to New England. Were Jim, Kurt and Kevin give
us their final thoughts.

Speaker 2 (40:24):
All right, you gotta start somewhere.

Speaker 9 (40:26):
And for the Panthers it was Foxborough and a game
they fell behind seventeen nothing get on the board late
seventeen to three. The final score. Offense was a struggle
throughout the four quarters, though as guys, they've had one
hundred and fifty one yards two out of fourteen on
third down. By and large, defense played pretty well. As
we know, many players did not play, especially for the

(40:47):
Panthers thirty two. I believe in all pretty much none
of the starters, a couple Dane Jackson and some others
I saw sometime. DJ Johnson slotted as a starter right now,
but by and large, offense didn't show enough. But Kevin
and Kurt, I'll start with Kevin, can you get a
gauge in a game where it's the first preseason game,
new coaching staff and with so many of the key

(41:08):
players that playing, can you get a sense or how
do you feel about it?

Speaker 7 (41:12):
Well, I'll talk to the offensive side. It really was
hard to get a sense of how productive some of
these guys can be because there were a lot of
backups and there they held out a lot of starters,
especially on the offensive line, and with that, you're not
going to have a lot of continuity with the drives.
And then that really affects everyone else on that offensive unit,
from the quarterback to the receivers and running back. And

(41:32):
so we'll expect those guys to get some more playing
time as the preseason goes along, But really started out
kind of behind the eight ball with that with trying
to do something impressive offensively right out of the gate,
especially with Plumber quarterback brand new, because you could see
a good play, a good play and then a couple
you know, mistakes, and then a good play and then

(41:55):
when it's not consistent. That's when you can't keep drives going.

Speaker 9 (41:59):
And then there was the receivers too early on, they
kind of had some big plays where they could have
had some receptions by Jonathan Mingo, big Terrace Marshall dropped
one late in the game at Mere Smith Marsett dropped one,
so kind of everybody was guilty too, Kurt of like
when there were some decent throws and some tough situations
that the receivers weren't where they needed to be.

Speaker 8 (42:18):
Yeah, I mean my final thoughts are I mean my
highs a right, I really want to start off on
a positive note. We scored three points, so we did
end a little bit of a drought. And I thought defensively,
except for that last, you know, lass stint in the
fourth quarter, I thought the defense looked very solid and
so I am actually really excited especially when the when
the big dogs, big dogs all get ready to play.

(42:39):
I mean, I'm excited to see them go hunt. Now
to that point of offensively, yes it was a vanilla offense,
but at that same point, so is the defense that
you're going against. So you gotta win your one on ones.
I didn't see enough winning on whether you're talking offensive line.
I didn't see it out of Jack and I really
didn't see it out of the wide receivers. As a whole,
I thought Jordan Matthews showed up, and then obviously there

(43:01):
were some sprinkled tidbits of good things going throughout. But
as a whole offensively, we got to continue to build
on this, and I think I do think Dave Canalis
he understands this, and it's a building process we want.
I want to see what kind of product we really
have with all of our people out there playing all right.

Speaker 9 (43:17):
So, again not the explosion that people were hoping for,
but probably not unexpected that kind of played out the
way it did on that side of the ball. But
again to Kurt's point and Kevins as well, that the
defense showing some good things and after getting shut out
for the last two games of last season, at least
it didn't extend into the new preseason here as Panthers
had three on the board thanks to Harris and MeVis

(43:39):
in the forty two yard field goal, but in the
end seventeen to three, they lose, and next up at
home against the New York Jets. Following the joint practice
session with them. Thanks to our crew here Hal Hamrick
along with Jason Hutchinson, Wendell Black, David Eads, and Matt Hogan.
Back in Charlotte by reputment, our studio producer Amy Martin
made the road trips. He's here. Eric Filman also here
affiliates manager along with David Langton, our executive producer, and

(44:00):
Sharon Thorsland on the sidelines. Patriots win it over the
Panthers seventeen to three. Back to chart we go now
with Brett, Mike and Eugene.

Speaker 3 (44:07):
All right, thanks a lot, Jim, and when we come back,
we'll have our three and outs, So stay with us.
You're listening to Panthers Football presented by Morris Jenkins.

Speaker 1 (44:16):
The Panthers postgame show continues, please see him by Southern Star.
Unofficial bourbon of the Carolina Panthers celebrate the spirit of
the Carolinas.

Speaker 3 (44:29):
And wrapping things up from the Panthers first preseason game,
seventeen to three.

Speaker 2 (44:34):
The final score.

Speaker 3 (44:35):
As we wrap up the Panthers postgame show presented by
Southern Star, an official burbon of the Carolina Panthers, celebrate
the spirit of the Carolina's time now for our three
and outs, and we'll start it off with Mike Pachico.

Speaker 6 (44:47):
All right, Well, I'm gonna start kind of when we
left off. I liked I liked how the and this
is why it's great listening to the postgame show because
where we get the exclusive interview there with Dave Canalis.
But I love the fact that he treated this game
like a game from a coaching perspective, to try to
make sure that you know, he's kind of buttoned up
when they get into the game situation. So I thought
that was pretty cool. The defensive effort, uh, I mean

(45:10):
the effort overall, I thought was good.

Speaker 2 (45:11):
It was a solid effort.

Speaker 6 (45:12):
But I think the defense really showed that they were
a little bit of a head And I thought we
haven't talked a lot about this, but I thought the
special teams played fairly well.

Speaker 4 (45:19):
Yeah, absolutely good, good observation.

Speaker 5 (45:21):
Indeed, my three and out is you got to play
your starters next week. And I'm do mean, Brice Young,
just let you know. Secondly, I like you want to
developed a callous Yeah. I like the boot and waggle
stuff that I'm just seeing. Uh, but receivers catch the ball.
Got to catch the ball. Defense seems to be ferocious

(45:44):
and fast. They look really really good. Keep it up
all right?

Speaker 3 (45:49):
Well, I also have the receivers listed on one of
my three and outs. They've got to step it up.
That was raining a little bit.

Speaker 4 (45:55):
Uh, hit them right in their hands.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
It's gonna snow during the regular season. Where's it gonna snow?

Speaker 6 (46:02):
Was New England?

Speaker 2 (46:04):
In New England today? Let's see it's gonna be snowing.
It's not in Tampa Bay. In Philadelphia.

Speaker 3 (46:13):
Might be snowing in Philadelphia in December, and that's that's
not it.

Speaker 2 (46:16):
Maybe in Frankfurt. I don't know. Catch so you gotta
catch the cat.

Speaker 3 (46:23):
The offenses, they got an offense, a lot of a
lot of mistakes. They got to clean up those mistakes.
The holding penalties. Uh, just some self induced mistakes that
they got to clean up. But I think Dave Canalis
said it, and he said at halftime to the team,
he says, half fun. This team needs to keep having fun.
He seems to be bringing a great attitude to this team.

(46:44):
The guys are enjoying him, and they need to keep
enjoining him and join where they're at.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
Nobody wants what was it?

Speaker 3 (46:52):
They always say, you'll never work a day in your
life if you're having fun or something like that.

Speaker 5 (46:57):
And when it creates that of having fun, winning does that.
And guess what win an awful creates the atmosphere of
getting paid. It's two things great about his game is
winning and getting paid. And winning needs to be up
there somewhere.
