Speaker 1 (00:28):
It's our first.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Mini camp wrap up show. I'm Fred Evans here do
so we'll be bye later. Paul's out golfing, but we'll
be here for about the next hour or so talk
about what we saw. And uh, I think we're gonna
throw it to Drake when he starts talking.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Drake, may, are we gonna do that?
Speaker 5 (00:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
I'm looking at Matt. No, we're not gonna do that.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Okay, so you'll catch that later on Patriots dot com.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
But I would say high energy. Would you agree?
Speaker 6 (00:57):
It's a fun practice. Yeah, it's a fun practice for
this time of year. And I was saying to you earlier,
I don't know what it all means. I don't know
if it means anything about, you know, how many games
they're gonna win or anything like that. But fun and
competitive are the two words I would use. There's an
energy of offense makes a play, defense makes a play,
and iron sharpening iron and all that good stuff that
(01:18):
I don't know if we had that in the last
couple of years. It's like more like the defense made
five good plays to every one offensive play, right, and
now it's a little bit more. Even so, it's it's
good to see another really sharp day. I thought for
Drake may I thought he looks better and better with
each practice.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, I mean what I saw on eleven on eleven's
things look smooth. They looked in rhythm, and we're not
just talking about little dump off passes. We're talking about
you know, you know, ten twelve yard passes down the
middle of the field, a lot of in cuts and
you know I saw Hunter Henry caught a nice ball
and stride.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Kyle Williams might have had the play of the day.
Speaker 6 (01:54):
Yeah, Yeah, that was That was the best one of
the day. It was from Josh Dobbs and just ran
right up the the middle of the field between the
two safeties and looked like ye had the linebacker is
trying to stay underneath him, that the safety's over the top,
and he just ran right through the entire defense for
about a forty yard bomb, So that's what you want
to see from him.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Yeah, he just definitely beat the coverage and I was like,
who's eighteen u s. Kyle went yeah, good, yeah, good, Yeah,
I'm glad.
Speaker 6 (02:19):
Yeah. And then Treyvon Henderson had a touchdown in the
low red zone work that they were doing towards the
end of practice, a little angle route on a linebacker.
So both rookies. We were looking the part today, so
that was good to see. And I thought Will Campbell
had some reps against Keon White where he held his own.
So just in general, a good day for the offense.
And there haven't been a lot of times that we
(02:39):
can come on the show right after practice and say
good day for the offense. So we're moving in the
right direction on that side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
So they were out there for what about ninety minutes
or so? Yeah, yeah, and like we said, I sense,
you know, really positive energy. Rabel was out there like
he always is, bouncing around. You know, you definitely hear
him almost after every play in eleven eleven saying something.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Josh McDaniels is his usual self.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
So just a lot of good energy out there a
lot of positive plays and you know the defense did
well too.
Speaker 6 (03:12):
Yeah, they had some moments as well, and Carlon Davis
had a pass breakup. I thought early on in practice
there was a decent amount of pressure on the quarterback.
They seem to clean that up a little bit offensively
as practice went on, but you still see, you know,
Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, those two guys especially were giving
them some problems early on. There was another one where
it looked like an assignment issue. Jabrill Peppers just came
(03:34):
in unblocked on the Bulleitz. Things like that that they
were still working on early on in practice. Jotted down
a few stacks and their quotes that maybe it looked
like there was enough pressure on the quarterback there. But
in general, I think this offense is the ball is
starting to come out on time. The rhythm of the offense,
Drake may looks a little bit more comfortable than what
(03:55):
we saw at the beginning of the spring. So they're
starting to at least be able to hold their own
against a good And.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I'm sure you're wondering, you know, with Stefan Diggs there, Yes,
he was taking part in positional drills, not taking part
in the team drills yet, he's not quite ready. I
looking at his right leg, it's not it's I don't
see you know, I'm not a doctor, Yeah, but I
don't see full extension. And definitely the muscles aren't where
the left one is yet. So he's not ready to,
(04:21):
you know, fully participate. But he's out there and he's
looking good.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
Yeah, And I think the encouraging part from a mental
rep standpoint is when they go into those walkthroughs, he
is participating in the walkthroughs, so they're getting him up
to speed in terms of what they're running from the
playbook perspective. So hopefully that means that once he is
cleared medically and is one hundred percent healthy and he
gets thrown into the team drill portion, he's not behind
(04:47):
from that perspective of knowing the playbook and knowing the
routes he's going to be running and all that kind
of stuff. So they did enough of that over these
last couple of practices that he's been there, whether it's
eleven one to eleven's in the middle of the field
walkthroughs or red zone work today, routes against air he's
still out there participating in those things, so hopefully he
can hit the ground running.
Speaker 7 (05:07):
Large media contingent today, I would say, nice media contention.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
It was a cool day.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
You know, it wasn't particularly warm, so perfect day for
practice for players standpoint a lot of you know, overcast,
so that not a lot of sun, but no rain
and you know, i'd say around sixty degrees or so,
so it was just a perfect day for guys to
get out there and ball.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
As you would say, it kind of felt like that, honestly,
like watching those red zone periods towards the end of
practice that were competitive live periods like that was fun
like that that had some juice and there had some
energy there and some back and forth the guys chirping
guys and things like that, and that's what you want
to see. I think. You know, the sequence land larising
(05:51):
on the wheel route, you know, over the shoulder from
Josh Dobbs, followed right by the pick six from Isaiah Bolden.
So the offense had a moment to sell break and
the defense at a moment to give it back to
the offense. And this time of year, that's just what
seaking of.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Juice, I mean, what's going on.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Not much practice is great.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
I'm in a weird position because I haven't talked to
anyone about this practice yet, so I feel a little
bit weird, like watching the competitive piers for its probably
just jump in without I thought it was a good
I thought it was a good day for Drake May.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
I don't know if anyone else has said that yet.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Ye completed a lot of passes.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
I just I wasn't There were times when I'm just wondering, like,
is the pass rush kind of turning it off after
a second here or what like.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Some of the periods to me just didn't seem as
competitive as I thought they've been in the past, perhaps
with just the pass rush stuff. But uh, I just
thought for him, great day overall. He just looked brilliant command.
It looked like a continuation of of OTAs UH continues
to progress, and that was a big thing we talked
about on the pregame show of you know, is he
going to continue to take those steps? So I thought
it was a great day for him. Throughout the day, though,
(06:58):
I think was was it was Josh Dobbs to Kyle
Williams down the field. I don't know you were off top, Evan.
How far was I like fifty yards forty?
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Yeah, it was, it was.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
It was a bomb. It was a really nice throw.
The good thing about it, he's just split the d
and just beat them. It was he just flat out.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Yeah, that was pretty.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
It was pretty play.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
That probably play of the day overall. But you know,
just a lot of consistency from Drake.
Speaker 8 (07:19):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
One other question I had for you have is, uh,
it was his last red zone period. I think somebody
caught one along the back line of the end zone.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
Is Kendrick Borne was born again? Yeah, that's who it was.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I just couldn't quite.
Speaker 6 (07:29):
See that was an incomplete in mind.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
No, Yeah, because I knew there was some debate about
that one. I was like at the weird angle.
Speaker 6 (07:34):
It was also late, so I just thought it was
kind of a win for the defense. Rep. Yeah, put
it that way.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Otherwise, I mean the you know, they were in the
mid zone, mid midfield a little bit. It seemed like, yeah,
maybe one throwaway. Otherwise it was he was on. I
mean he was finding guys three nine, eighty four, eighty
five three.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Again, good day, good day for Drake.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
I think it was encouraging to see him continue to
progress some looking command of the team.
Speaker 6 (07:56):
Yeah, there was a throw early on in practice to
Kaishan Booty is a nine stop you know, run down
the field nine steps stop on the dime, and Drake
may threw it on like the sixth step instead of
the ninth step and Booty turned around and the ball
was just right on him. And those are the types
of you know, the timing anticipation of the throws that
you want to see from from Drake that I thought
(08:19):
was is getting better and better with every spring practice
that we have seen from him. So I love anticipatory
throws like that where he throws it before the guy's
breaking And that's another one of those we were talking
about on the show before you know, where it adjusts
based off the coverage, so both guys got to be
on the same page. You got to adjust it properly.
And that was a good looking throw.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Yeah, I mean on time, that's what I sens like.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
There wasn't a lot of you know, bringing the ball
down and you know where you know, we wouldn't have
that much time in a real situation and we could
just see, Hey, the right because joining us Jalen Hawking.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Have a scene, join us just off the practice field.
Jalen Hawkins joining Patriots unfiltered. Jalen, it's Mike yourself, Frank
kersh Evan Lazar.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
I guys doing good.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
Appreciate all.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
So how was today for you?
Speaker 9 (09:12):
Today was cool man? Good practice? You know, the offense
was doing anything today came lie. Defense did well, we
got the ball, we got to turnover. We executed some things.
We're learning still. So overall, you know, it's always good
to just get reps and connect with the guys and
get the chemistry and you know, get the understanding of
what we're doing and what we're trying to see.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yeah, we were saying before you got in that you
know we were out there too, and we just sense
a lot of positive energy, like you know, upbeat positive energy.
Speaker 9 (09:40):
You agree with that, Yeah, for sure. You know, every
day we out there trying to get better. We out
there on the mission. We're out there playing together. No
matter who's in we all just helping each other out,
embracing each other, embracing each other's rooms, you know, and
just connecting. You know, that was one of the big
emphasis in the beginning of this ots was to connect,
you know, and I feel like we're doing that and
we're working to tours some special.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
How does it feel to be able to come back
to New England? You're here last year, but a bunch
came back.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
Yeah, it feels good.
Speaker 9 (10:05):
You know, I'm happy to be, you know, with the
guys man with some of the guys I played with
last year, and with the new guys and the new
staff and everybody knows it's a good spot, good area.
Speaker 5 (10:14):
I enjoyed it last year, so it's a blessing to
be back.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Just what has the adjustment been like from the two defenses?
I mean, we're not getting too much detail, but I
can't get.
Speaker 9 (10:21):
Answer, you know, but just you know, we're working towards
you know, our goals and you know, like I said,
we're trying to connect, train and learn and get understanding.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
So it's been good.
Speaker 6 (10:32):
I know you can't get into details, but just general anyway,
I'm gonna try generally speaking, you know, is it the
same different? Like how different is it truly? For your position? Specifically?
You know, playing at safety?
Speaker 5 (10:46):
Safety is safety?
Speaker 9 (10:49):
You know, like I said, we're already just trying to connect,
train and learn and we're embracing each other and we're
all just you know, learning together. So that's just the
biggest thing. And we're trying to just get better, that's it,
and win today. How about coach Frabo? His style, good
coach man. Love what he's doing, Love the culture he's
bringing to this team. Like I said, the connecting part
(11:11):
is so big. We're playing for one of another, playing
for our coaches, playing for our team. We're all close.
We're all tight knit and together, and that's that's a
big deal.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
You know. Those those things add up and help.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
You know.
Speaker 9 (11:23):
We also work hard, man, and everything we do we
try to finish, you know, from running to place to everything.
Speaker 5 (11:31):
It's finished, you know, So it's good.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
What do you say about the safety room. You've guys
got such a wide array of vets.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
You've got a rookie, you've got you know, a free
veteran free agent came in with it with apps.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I mean, del Pattis had a good year last year.
What's that room like.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
Man, it's a good room.
Speaker 8 (11:46):
Man.
Speaker 9 (11:47):
We're all we all embrace each other, man, and we
all learn from each other. We all help each other out, man,
because you know, we need everybody and and I'm like
having a close knit room you can learn from and
go out there and compete with every day. You know,
it only makes you better, makes the other for your
teammate better, and it just helps your game overall.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
Man.
Speaker 9 (12:05):
And it's just good to have, man, because every day
is growth. Every day is something new. We all learn
it from. We all learned from each other.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Man.
Speaker 5 (12:12):
And uh, coach book is doing this thing.
Speaker 9 (12:14):
And you know, like I said, the goal is to
win the day and continuously strive to get better.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
And that's that's that's what I feel like we're doing.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
All right, forget about football for a second. Tell our
fans something they don't.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Know about you. About Jalen Hawkins, I.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Could tell you something after last summer, right right, Well, well,
I gotta tell quick story real quick. The last summer
I thought, you know, James having a good camp and
I'm like, I want to go talk to him, roll
a little piece on him. Then we had a day
off and I'm down at our spot Cape Cod, you know,
having a lobsterle by family.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
And then I look, I'm like, it's freaking jaling luck.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
It's walking intout Like if all the spots.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
In Cape cod he found.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
I think your girl found it though, right the number
one lobster role plays, so I don't know plays.
Speaker 6 (12:53):
He was very excited.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
I I'm not seeing my dude. I'm like.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
King, like the spot, like the Cape.
Speaker 9 (13:03):
I love the cave man, I love the beats. I'm
West coast baby, Okay, water, you know, I love the water.
I love being on the coast. So you know, I'm
glad that they're somewhere out here I can go to.
It's very therapeutic for me. So that's something I do
from time to time if I can, whenever I have
the availability.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Okay, Yeah, I drive up from the Cape every day.
Oh yeah, I make the trip every day.
Speaker 5 (13:24):
Nice, I do area.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
So okay, so you like the Cape, I guess. But
what else?
Speaker 2 (13:29):
What something that fans you want fans to know about
you that they wouldn't know.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
From you know, maybe reading the media guide.
Speaker 5 (13:35):
M I'm a creative, yeah, you know, from close to.
Speaker 9 (13:42):
Home interior stuff too, making beats, yeah, you know that's
I'm into all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
If you got together with Marcus, I ain't with Marcus.
Speaker 9 (13:54):
I ain't going with Marcus or you know, it is
very talented to leave on my boy, pad, I ain't
got none of them yet, but that would be cool.
That would be something, you know, one of these times
on a free camp if we have a free day
or something like that, you know, we can connect on that.
But okay, that's something I'm very interested and I'm a
big travel guy for sure.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Okay, what's your favorite place to go.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
As of right now? M M.
Speaker 9 (14:19):
I love Japan just of just you know, if I
want to go to the city, I'll go to Japan.
I love Japan. Fire wow.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
If I want to go to the beach or something
like that and vibe Brazil.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Okay, so you do travel? Sounds like my travel is
like to the hardware store.
Speaker 6 (14:40):
Maybe playing a game in Brazil someday.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
You know.
Speaker 5 (14:44):
I know that we have Patriots Brazil my correct.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
Yeah, that's one of our home markets. Nice.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Yeah, beach probably.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Focus your You're Panamanian.
Speaker 9 (14:57):
Panamanian, half Panamanian, and I'm half African American can Yeah,
so yeah, that's that's. My mom's side is Panamanian. Also
my grandfather he's Panamanian and Cuban. My grandma is full
of Panamanian.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Okay, cool.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
So I don't speak no Spanish though, trying to get better.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
And you know, yeah, I hear that. So what's your
plans once mini camp goes? You have anything planned? You're
gonna go do any traveling between now and training camp?
Speaker 9 (15:24):
Actually wednesday, I'm going for a few days on my
honeymoon with my wife.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
Yeah that's right, we just got married.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
Still saw that on I g Yeah, So go down there.
Speaker 9 (15:34):
With her, Go down to south of France with her
actually for a couple of days, come back and train
and get ready for camp.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
All right, you're racking up those miles.
Speaker 9 (15:45):
Man, I'm racking up my mom's my points there you go.
You know those cars, all those cars, I got benefits
I got you know.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
All right, Well, listen, we really appreciate you coming by.
I know you've got other stuff to do today, but
I appreciate anytime you want to come.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
This is where we are.
Speaker 5 (16:00):
Okay, sure, I appreciate you, guys, man coming by.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
And if you need any Cape Cod recommendation the guys, yeah, okay,
all right. Jalen Hawkins stopping it.
Speaker 6 (16:15):
There you go. Yeah, that's your neck of the woods.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
That's right.
Speaker 5 (16:18):
I know.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
It's so funny.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
I mean, like, so he was down at the Suet.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Harbor, Suet Harvard right at the old Lobster Roll place.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
I mean it was like you know, and I literally like,
you know, you guys know me, like I picked my
spots with interviews with some of these guys and hey,
but it was like I think that's him, you know,
walk over with the kids and stock and hockey lough.
He was great and you know, just always gives you
an end to talk to these guys. You go in
the locker room like, hey man, I was the loss
Arl you know that kind of stuff. But active day
for him though, Kyle Dugger, he was out there a lot.
(16:45):
He was getting a lot of work. So, uh, busy guy.
Busy guy today for sure.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
On the field.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
So I mean there was one season I think in
Atlanta where I think he started every game.
Speaker 6 (16:55):
Yeah. Yeah, he played a lot for the Falcons two
years ago before the Patriots signed him in free agency
last offseason. So another one of those guys that maybe
can play a little bit of free safety, a little
bit of deep safety and free up you know Peppers
and Dugger and let those guys do their things. So
another content guy though for another creative Yeah, another one
of those.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
Yeah, I didn't know Peppers was into music too. They
dropped out on that then.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
I don't know, a.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Little collaboration should get a little competition with the guys,
have a music showing in like a wrap off or something.
All right, right now, uh May is talking, So you'll
we'll have all of that on Patriots dot com, so
you won't you won't miss anything. We'll have the full
(17:39):
uh interview press conference up on Patriots dot com as
soon as it's over all. Right, eight five to five
past five hundred is the hotline, Mike. We were before
Jalen came in. You were kind of filling us in
with some of your observations.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Yeah, yeah, I just uh, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
I mean, brock Lampy get some action, a little bit
of action in the red zone.
Speaker 6 (18:00):
Yeah, I mean, if they, like I said earlier, if
they're gonna call on a true full back, like he's
the only one here right, nobody else has Philip plays
that role. And it's kind of like you know, when
ye as a lacrosse player, and like it's like goalie, right,
like you only have one or two of them, right, So,
like every time they call out the package for the
full back, it's like there's only one guy that can run,
(18:22):
so it's you know, if they're gonna have it, then
it's gonna be him. Probably.
Speaker 7 (18:26):
It's similar with Jack Westover again, it's just some opportunity reps.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
You never know, like.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
Sometimes they think the coaches just throw guys in there
to see, you know, if they can swim with the
big guys and look, don't look out of place. But
it just catches your eye when all of a sudden
there are guys like Jack Westover, brock Lampy, you know,
with all guys you've been seeing out there. So doesn't
mean that they're making a roster push or anything, but
at least they're on the radar and clearly the coaches
are taking notice of them and giving them some opportunities.
(18:51):
But interesting with all the receivers coming back Kendrick Bourne.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
Nice day, you know, a bunch of catches stuff.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
For that one.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
I guess he was out of bounds.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
It was tough for Michael because you know, the defensive
guys on the dline are all going, nope, nob he's out,
he's out.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
And the offensive guys are spreading celebrating. So hard to tell.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
But with those guys back in the mix a little bit.
Good to see him make some plays. Pop Douglass made
some plays, Hunter Henry made some plays. So it's just
you're starting to see the offenses starting to come together
a little bit, and it's just it's reassuring. I know
it was coming to this point, but anytime you get
out to that first ota and you saw some interceptions
from Drake, it's easy to overreact.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
And be like, oh God, what are we doing?
Speaker 3 (19:28):
We blow up the offense.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
It kind of worked last year and this but I
think the signs are all pointed in the right direction
with Josh.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
So we will be doing this again tomorrow practice. We'll
be out there at noon. Does Rabel have a press.
Speaker 6 (19:40):
Conference again tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (19:41):
I think okay, So he'll talk again at twelve fifteen.
Then we'll turn our cameras to the field and we'll
be up there until they tell us to turn our
cameras off. Then we'll watch practice and we'll come back
here in the studio at around two thirty and do another.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Wrap up show.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
I thought it was pretty fun today, from which is
our perspective of doing the show this way. Sometimes it's
hard to talk and take things in at this same
time we talked through some of the early individual periods
and so it wasn't you were messing up. But then
for the team periods, we were able to get down
there and really take that stuff in, which I think
is we'll have to.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Come up with some storylines because we can't repeat what
we said today, so we'll come up with I wish
we could do the eleven on eleven, but I understand.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Yeah, you know, they don't want all that on film.
Speaker 6 (20:20):
They don't want people like me seeing that on film.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
You're breaking it down twenty five times now.
Speaker 4 (20:27):
It's but yeah, I think as you watch more of
these Rabel practices, you start to see a little to
a little bit of the method to the madness. I
don't know, maybe if it's just me getting you know,
six or seventh year now actually watching every practice, but
you start to see, all right, they practice it in
the red zone, then they get together and they play
it in the red zone, and they practice in the midfield,
and then they get to you know, so you see
how everything fits together.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Yeah, I mean that's no different from a Belichick. Yeah
that's something you said. Maybe it's just me starting.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
This is getting back to more I would say what
the rhythm of practice is similar to a Belichick practice,
whereas last year they had the West Coast coaches on
the offensive side and those guys just slow everything down
right where it's like play talk about it, play talk
about it, and like, you know, this practice is really
(21:14):
like everybody to the side. The coordinators are relaying the
plays through the headset and it's like a game and
we're just running plays.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
And just keeping the speed up.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
Yeah, it's not to say that there's that's the wrong
way to do it where you know last year, because
that's what a lot of those coaches do from that tree.
So it's not like it hasn't been successful, but there's
definitely a more volume and more pace to this type
of practice and what we saw last year.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
It's like we'll talk about it after in the classroom.
Yeah right, all right, let's.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
Go to the phone. Sean'son Vancouver. What's up, Sean, Yeah,
let me just pick up.
Speaker 10 (21:50):
I just wanted to clarify the whole Wings thing of
the wings actually don't use drumsticks, those are really big.
They use drummet which are straight, so they get the
bunch get confused with the drumpsticks. Right, that's the thing.
It's not it's not actually leg it's it's part of
the wing, is.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
The drum man, right, and they're attacked, right, they get separated.
Speaker 10 (22:10):
Yeah, yeah, exactly one session I have about practice and
maybe he said I didn't hear. Did Carlton Davis participate today?
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (22:19):
He did a pass break up?
Speaker 10 (22:20):
Yeah, yep, he did o great, okay, terrific.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:23):
I think on Patriots dot com we had a nice
picture of he and Gonzo running down the field.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Together, so, uh cool. Yeah, that's going to be a
good duo.
Speaker 6 (22:31):
Yeah, they had Hunter Henry tried to do one of
those sit on the goal line and just kind of
be big, and carl Davis got those long arms in
there and broke up the pass.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
The length stands out to me seeing him in person,
once he gets you know, the pads on until you
get to this point a little bit of a sense
of the size of these guys.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Yeah, he's just he's a long dude. He's gonna make
a compliment.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Yeah, I know Polk didn't participate all in eleven eleven,
but he looks like you put on some good weight.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
There are quite a few guys, I think they're looking
good shape.
Speaker 4 (22:59):
I mean, Polk, it seems like he is maybe in
the middle of the rehab process because he's not quite
there for the live periods, but in the in like
the walk through stuff, he'll put it on a yellow
opinion and go. So he's not as far as way
as some of the guys like on when you he's
not really doing much. Kyle Duggar not doing much yet,
the rookie Jared Wilson, He's not really doing much right now.
(23:19):
So there's definitely some guys that are still working their
way back and that maybe exkews some of the reps
a little bit.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Barton Poland writes in should we be worried about the
DC situation with Terrell Williams having a health scare, being
absent from the team activities and only working remotely so far?
Do you think this is something we should be more
concerned about? It feels like the topic isn't getting much attention,
but a formation coordinator not being there for the first
few months seems pretty important to me.
Speaker 6 (23:45):
It's a fair point. I mean, I don't know, the
word concern has a lot is heavy, but he has
a health thing and you never want to like be
alarmist about that, like he's got to take care of
his health, right, you know, that's some important thing, but
it's not nothing. You know, certainly that's not the setup
that they had in mind. And Zach Kerr's mostly qualified.
(24:08):
He has had some interviews in the past for defensive
coordinator positions, so it's not like he's totally unqualified to
be in that role. But everyone I think we're waiting
and seeing if Terrell Williams is going to come back. Yeah,
I think.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
It's it's a little reassuring to know that he's coach
with at Kerr.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
I think he's coach with cletmc millan.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
As well, Scott Booker stuff, so they have experienced together.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
So and I also you know that Terrell.
Speaker 4 (24:36):
Williams is said he's been around, he's been on Zoom,
so I think the team is familiar with him.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
I think it's good that.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
They have guys that are experienced with him though, because
if this was a little bit of a Frankenstein staff
like it was last year, where you had a mix
of new and old, then if you wonder are they
delivering the same message. I still have confidence that they
are and I also just wonder if maybe a positive
for this is that the team's going to rally around
and when he does get here, there you know, they
know he's been dealing with something.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
I wonder if he's going to come here having lost
a lot of weight.
Speaker 6 (25:07):
Yeah, you know, yeah. I think the one big thing
to me with Williams isn't necessarily about them installing the
system and all that, because, like due said, all these
coaches have been in the system rables here, so he's
going to make sure the system gets installed properly. But
to my knowledge, Joe Williams doesn't have a ton of
play calling experience, and you know that he's going to
be the play caller that's the plan or the setup,
(25:29):
and so these practices kind of serve as practice for
the coaches too, and he gets in there and it's
a live practice. And Josh McDaniels is one of the
best play callers in the league. On the other side, like,
that's really good practice against McDaniels. To go up against
him and try to out you know, chess match and
out smart Josh McDaniels in some of these calls. That
(25:52):
is valuable. So in that respect, I think that's probably
the most important thing is you know, relaying the calls,
the communication and knowing how to you know, go up
against the coordinator like Josh, who's gonna mix it up
and give you different looks and things like that. So
it's tough. You can't really replicate that in any other way.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
I would assume like he's getting the tape of practice
and yeah, you know, he's keeping up to speed at
least with what's going on for sure.
Speaker 4 (26:15):
I think Evans is that that's probably the best point
of what you should be concerned about.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
And small seat concerned.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
Still plenty of time to catch up a couple of
sets of joint practices.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
He'll get some experience.
Speaker 4 (26:25):
But you know, even expanding upon that, it's hearing the
voice in your aid for the defenders and you know,
knowing the cadence of how they want things done. So
it's I'm not too worried about it. I think it's
things that can all be ironed out. It's just it's
just not ideal.
Speaker 6 (26:37):
Yeah, and calling defense is different than calling offense, Like
calling defense is a lot I know easier. Honestly, frankly,
it's easy man, Like, Yeah, that's not there's only so
many defenses you can play, and it's very situational, like
we kind of play our base stuff on first and
second down, then you get after it on third down.
So like it's not like offense where you could be
(26:58):
having these like ten word calls and things like that.
It's it's much more streamlined than that.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Yeah, I think the more complicated thing on defense is
getting your groupings right, getting your subs right.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Yeah, I think that too, And I'm sure that Terrell Williams,
like I said, you know, it's hard to really get
a sense of these guys to see him in person.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
It's probably killing him not to be able.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
To see these guys on field and really get a.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Sense for how they're moving. You can watch the film.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
But at the same time, there's something special.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
About being there, feeling the vibe that these guys give
off when they play together.
Speaker 6 (27:25):
Was it was it Boyer, one of the assistant coaches
the Patriots had over the years, was apparently the best
spotter of what the personnel the offense was running on
the field.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Maddy p said that, and it.
Speaker 6 (27:38):
Was like he was automatic to get the defense in
the right personnel package, and usually that guy sits up
top in the in the sky booth and radios.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
There's a skill to that. Yeah, there really is.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Yeah, let's go to Robert who was in Henderson, Nevada.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
What's up, Robert?
Speaker 8 (27:57):
Hello? So I was calling because listening to Jalen Hawkins
and Bred talking about Cape cod and it don the
question because I want to visit the Cape sometime in
the near future, and recommendations on where to go getting
there and if it's like a thing of you do
(28:21):
the Cape, Martha's Vineyard and Nantuck or is it just
kind of you do want it? What's kind of like?
Speaker 1 (28:28):
I mean, it all just depends on how much time
you have.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
I mean, if you have a lot of time, you know,
like two weeks, you know, you spend some time on
the Cape and then take the ferry over to Nantucket
and then visit Martha.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
If you can do the whole thing, but you need
some time to do that, you know.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
Yeah, I would say Nantucket's a day trip. You could
do Nantucket in the day. It's not as big as
Martha's Vineyard if you want to hit like all the
different little towns in Martha's Vineyard, you know, ob and
you know, like all those different places, and you probably
would need more time than one day, but Nantucket you
could definitely which.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
One's the best. What do you like to do? Like, like,
you know.
Speaker 8 (29:07):
I like the water, I like to be on the water.
I like to visit shops like Relax.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
Okay, so so Martha's viny and I think it's it's bigger.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
But if you stay on the.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Cape, you know, if you if you like waves and
stuff like that, you want to go on the south
side of the Cape.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Uh for those types of Uh.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
If you don't care, then the north side is probably
more scenic, it's more historic. And if you like shopping
and eating, I would take a day where you go
all the way to the end of the Cape to
a place called Provincetown And there's a street there called
Commercial Street, and all it is is stores and restaurants
(29:48):
and the people watching is second to none.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
It's it's a really cool place.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
I would do that during the week not on a weekend, yeah,
because it'll get packed. But Province Town, not Providence Provincetown. Yeah,
it's all the way at the end of the Cape
and it's a really really cool place.
Speaker 6 (30:05):
Yeah. You can definitely do the vineyard in the day
two and the ferry, we'll take you right into Oak Bluffs,
which has beach shop restaurant exactly what you're talking about.
But you know, Nantucket has like one town center, whereas
the Vineyard had like three or four different little pockets
of centers. And so it just depends on what you're
looking for.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
Nantucket you can probably do without. I mean, it's kind
of a very special thing. And I mean, personally I
love the cape. I found like Martha's Vineyard is Martha's Vineyard.
But at the end of the day, you're still like
looking at saltwater taffy shops and little you know, it's
very similar no matter where you go.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
But Fred's right Province Town.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
And then I just throw on Main Street Hyghennas if
you don't want to drive all the way to the
tip of the cape. Hyennas right in the middle of
the cape and they've got similar lot of stuff shop.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
All right, thanks Robert, Well, enjoy your trip to the Cape.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
Yeah, sure, some good advice there.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
You come to the right place for this advice.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Oh yeah, we didn't even get into like what restaurants
to but that's a whole other show. Yeah, Brandon and
Main write sin as a distinction the resident curmudgeon Paul
will appreciate.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
I hear a lot of hype.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
And excitement for Diggs as wide receiver one, including you, Evan.
Do you all think he really is a wide receiver
one or is he just our number one? He just
screamed volume guy to me the last couple of years.
And while he's better than what we have, I'm not
expecting him to be a key for unlocking mace potential
or that of the offense.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
I think you agree with his premise.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
Uh yeah, And that's like what I've been saying the
whole time. Like he's in now at this point of
his career, he's a chain mover. He is not the explosive,
big play over the top receiver that maybe he was
a little bit in Buffalo and at the end of Minnesota,
like he is turned into at this stage of his career.
He's kind of turned into that we're oute running technician
that on third down he's going to be a guy
(31:55):
that's going to get past the sticks and move the chain.
So in that sense, if that's like sort of what
he's then I hear that. I don't know. I'm I
think Doozy might be on the same page with me.
The whole wide receiver one thing's starting to bug me,
like it just like I don't know what that means.
Like yeah, like I get what you're trying to say,
but like I just I don't know, like is he
a wide receiver? I don't know, Like maybe like I
(32:17):
will see.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Like like well, he mentions, is he just our wide
receiver one?
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Like yeah, so can a wide receiver one look different
on different teams? Like you know in your mind, like
the obvious one is justin Jefferson Jamar Chase. Those are
like wide receiver, right, you know, but like if Stefan
Diggs and our team has one hundred and ten catches, yeah,
what's wrong with that?
Speaker 5 (32:41):
Right?
Speaker 3 (32:41):
But they're chain moving catches and not like bomb bomb.
Speaker 6 (32:45):
Yeah right, yeah, I hear. I get what it is.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
I just think there's like a handful and you named
a couple of them from of guys that everybody wants,
like the superstar wide receivers.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
Stefon Diggs still a superstar wide receiver.
Speaker 1 (32:57):
I don't know if he's still so he has a
couple of would you rathers?
Speaker 2 (33:00):
I didn't mean to pick on him you know me
Gigs at.
Speaker 7 (33:06):
This point, Yeah, Young, same thing with Wilson, right, yeah,
Young Jerry, Judy Diggs, Ye Flowers.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
I do love to save Flowers. I don't know, there's
such different players, Like I think this is the hard
part with me with the receiver, like what like that's
they're just differult I wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
Tell you that Flowers is number one receiver right now.
Speaker 6 (33:29):
They keep searching for him.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Honestly, Courtland Sutton, who.
Speaker 6 (33:33):
I mean, Courtland Sutton is like a jump ball outside,
big bodied receiver and we're comparing.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
Him to it.
Speaker 6 (33:40):
It's hard.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
It's like I think on our team, I take Diggs
me too.
Speaker 6 (33:43):
I know what I'm saying. I just think that's the
thing for me is like if Diggs is going to
fill into that role that we've seen and maybe it's
a little bit more outside than it than like Edelman
and Welker and like those types of guys, but if
he's going to be the engine of the offense, then
he then he's a wide receiver one like he he's
the engine like and to me, you know, I think
this is where like Paul always will say, well, you
(34:05):
know it's why like catch for eight yards. It's like, well,
if it's third and seven, then I'll take the eight yards.
And that's gonna be the type of guy that he's
gonna be. He's not going to be Courtland Sutton. He's
not going to be a six foot four outside receiver
that's gonna like catch jump balls fifty yards down the field.
It's not gonna be his game.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
I just I just don't get the premise though, that
somehow that that receiver would be better for Drake May's
development than a route technician who's gonna get open on
third down.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
Like, to me, the way you're keeping confidence building.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
Right, Like Diggs is kind of, like I said on
the pregame show, like he just is going to get
you out of that rut and give you somebody you
always say, Fred they're easy to defend, Like Diggs is
somebody that on third down you probably are gonna have
to figure out where he is and have a plan
to cover him and stop him. I know we've watched
plenty of Patriots games against when he was with the
Bills and even.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
Last year when he was in the Texans.
Speaker 4 (34:51):
Where you're like, third down, make sure you cover digs,
and then it's like Yeah, this little, you know, quick
route that's perfectly executed and the ball's right on him
and it's first down.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
That to me seems like it's it's gonna be a
great bonus for Drake.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
There's no doubt that there's a question about the overall,
like the explosiveness still of this offense. Like they they
have guys like Hunter Henry and Stefan Diggs that within
that twenty yard box of the line of scrimmage can
make plays. Is there anybody that's going to break out
of that twenty yard box? And maybe it's Kyle will it's.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Going to bring that up.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
We saw that today.
Speaker 4 (35:20):
So if that's an element that Kyle Wims is going
to bring and Drake may ain't afraid to throw those
deep balls.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
That might come together the way that people want. Now
who's the one, who's the two?
Speaker 1 (35:29):
I don't know, but it could be a very hard offense.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Audrey said on the show that we did it looked
like we were at a morgue.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
She said, is that a covered body in front of
you guys? So I don't know what it looked like.
Speaker 6 (35:42):
The black criticism that's okay, said Sor Right, Okay, Sor right,
let's get back to the phones.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
We'll go to Kendall in North Carolina. I hate Kendall.
Speaker 10 (35:53):
Hey, what's going on, guys doing all right?
Speaker 11 (35:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (35:57):
Well, and will y'all impressed with the cal Williams his
day today and just overall, what y'all spring and I
take it up there.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
I appreciate it, Okay, thanks Kendall. I mean, we saw
him make the catch of the day today.
Speaker 6 (36:10):
The juice is real, Like, there's definitely burst and speed
to his game. I'm sure that there's a lot of
little details that he's still getting, you know, caught up
on and learning at this you know level of football.
I mean, but there's no doubt that he moves well,
like I mean, we saw it today, ran right through
the middle of the defense and nobody touched him, you know,
so that that's definitely encouraging. I would say the same
(36:34):
thing about Trevon Henderson. Now, is he grasping it? You know,
is he running the right routes and is he doing
the right things at all the time? Like I don't know,
you know, Josh McDaniels would have to tell you that,
but I think you're encouraged by the way he moves.
Speaker 5 (36:46):
It's gonna be a.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
Big joint practice guy. Like, how's he get off the line?
Speaker 11 (36:50):
Like?
Speaker 4 (36:50):
Does that release pass translate to physical press corners?
Speaker 6 (36:53):
It's a great point. That's the number one thing is
you know when they get into the pads and they
start pressing him. He's a smaller guy, He's one hundred
and ninety pounds, Like, is he gonna be able to
get off press at this level? If not, then he's
you know, you're gonna have to maybe play him inside
and off the line of scrimmage a little bit more.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
All right, let's next go to Colin in Connecticut. What's
up Colin?
Speaker 1 (37:17):
Colin? Hello, Yeah, Hello.
Speaker 11 (37:23):
A couple of questions. I'll make it click. What's your
biggest worry with the defense? I know you've mentioned big
plays being a possible worry, but anything else. And then
you guys mentioned Jared Wilson and Mike and Winu hooking
about an injury.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
Yeah, they're they're just rehabbing. Yeah, they're they're rehabbing right now.
They're limited there, yeah, limited, you know, we're working through stuff.
They're in some drills, they're not others. I would say
my two biggest concerns are speed off the edge and
rangey free safety like coverage on.
Speaker 5 (37:57):
The back end.
Speaker 6 (37:57):
Yeah, I was gonna say pass rush off the edge. Yeah,
I think that's right.
Speaker 1 (38:01):
Now.
Speaker 6 (38:02):
I'm pretty confident that Harold Andry is going to be solid.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
He seems very excited in the post game post practice interviews.
He seems like he's re energizing it.
Speaker 6 (38:09):
Yeah, I'm sure he's going to be solid. He's been
a solid run defender even last year, throughout his entire career.
Are they going to have enough juice off the edge?
You know, they're gonna get the pressure up the middle
from the two guys, you know, Barmore and Williams. But
who's going to clean up? Who's going to get the
edge rush? You know that's going to be.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
You can expect both those edge guys to get one
on one matchups, probably because Barmore and Williams are probably
gonna draw some double teams in attention, and those guys
have to be able to take advantage of those of
those one on one.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
I mean, my my fear is like we brought all
these free agents in and they look good, they seem
to fit. It's the right guys, but rarely when you
bring in that many like do they all hit?
Speaker 6 (38:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (38:51):
And I think for this team, we need them kind
of all to hit, you know, the higher ones. You know,
we need Spelane to be good, we need Judie would
be good, We need you know, obviously Williams to be good.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
You know, they all have to hit for this defense
to be good this year.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
It's a great point, like you get teams. You know,
last year, the Tennessee Titans spent a bunch of money
in free agency, and they won as many games as
the Patriots. Right now, the Washington Commander spent a bunch
of money in free agency, went to the NFC Championship game. Yeah,
and when you when you have this model, there doesn't
seem to be a middle ground there where it's like
we won eight games right right, It's like you're either
a playoff team because of it or it didn't work
(39:30):
and it blew up in your face and there's really
no in between.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
You know, throw Carlton Davison there too, Like sure, I
mean these are all good players that you brought in,
but that doesn't always mean that every free agent that
you bring in, you know, hits.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
Yeah, I mean you're putting a lot on a lot
of these guys. It's remarkable to me. I mean, you guys,
have you guys, Fred and Paul had some experience watching
coaching changes and wholesale changes on defense. You know last
year there wasn't wholesale changes on defense. It was in
large part the same defense. So that's it's a new
experience for me now looking out there and seeing just
(40:03):
so many new faces on the defensive side of the ball,
not only in.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
Support roles, but really calling the defense.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
And like the key guys are like Robert Splaine and
Milton Williams and Harold Landry, Like, yeah, these are the
key pieces to the defense this year that we have
no real experience watching it.
Speaker 6 (40:17):
I mean Roberts, yeah, Robert Splain is like probably gonna
be your green dot.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (40:21):
And he's never played a game in the Patriot uniform before.
Now he's been in this defense before, so he has
some experience with it. But like he's your starting Mike linebacker,
so you think he's the one calling the defense.
Speaker 4 (40:32):
I just I have more confidence too, because I think
we've washed away the feeling of like Bill Belichick's defenses
are so complex and there's gonna be week to week,
we're gonna change and we can be anything. They don't
really seem interested in that. They're just like, we are
going to get after you really fast and be aggressive.
You might land a couple punches on us, but I promise.
Speaker 1 (40:49):
You we're going to lay some on you. It all
starts with Gonzo and Davis. If they can do their jobs,
if they can truly be.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
True one on one cornerbacks, and obviously they've shown that
they can in this league, that frees up everything. Then
you don't have to be so you know, game plan specific,
because we're going to take out two of your guys
and we're going to free up the rest so that
you know, we don't have to double you know, certain
players and that that is so freeing for a defense
(41:19):
to have two shutdown corners on your team.
Speaker 4 (41:22):
Yeah, I mean it buy it buys time for the
edge rush you know that we're talking about. It also
means that they don't have to run as many games,
and I think that's you know, when defenses start to
get in trouble and can't get pressure conventionally, when guys
can't win one on one matchups, that's when you start
going to you know, stunts and loops and all that
stuff that I'm sure they're going to do anyway. I mean,
that's you know what verybol and Williams did in Tennessee.
(41:44):
But you just don't want to have to be overly
relying on it. You don't want to have to be
able to have to scheme up pressure. You want to
be able to produce pressure. The interior guys should not
have a problem doing that, But you just don't want
defense or offenses to be able to say, protect the middle,
make sure he can step up. They don't have the
juice to get around the edge on us or just
step up in the pocket. As long as we hold
with those two guys, we're gonna have enough on the pockets.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
But you know, you talk about complimentary defense, and you know,
the pass rush compliments the coverage. The coverage compliments the
pass rush. And I think we're from the from the
get go. We've got two guys that can really set
the tone now and juries are going to happen, you know,
so you always have to be concerned with depth. That's
(42:27):
a concern for every team. So you know, if one
of those guys goes down, you know that that's an issue,
and I'll look at linebacker. I think I'm a little
bit worried about depth at linebackers as well.
Speaker 6 (42:40):
I would say, really at all three levels of the defense.
Like I feel like they've made a lot of progress
on both sides of the ball with the starting eleven
on both sides, and you start to put the you know,
the projections together and you're like, all right, this is
a pretty good starting defense. But in pretty much all
areas they have questions about depth. You know, they really
don't have much, you know, into your defensive line depth.
(43:03):
You're going to start to get into you know, the
Jeremiah Farms is and you know, maybe the Joshua Farmer
and like, yeah, you know, rookies playing and things like that.
But I'm sure that's true for a lot of teams.
And we're just we are hyper focused on this team,
but on on offense too, Like if Will Campbell gets hurt,
god forbid, Like who's playing its Madarian Lowe back out
(43:25):
there left tackle, right, Like they don't necessarily have that
layer built up yet, And you start looking at like
the two deeps and stuff.
Speaker 4 (43:32):
I mean, I just you take Landry out, he take
splane out.
Speaker 3 (43:36):
He taken Zalis out, like.
Speaker 4 (43:37):
Yeah, there's a couple of key threads and every like
you said, every team has those things. But that's why
you look at a guy like Jack Gibbons maybe or
one of the young guys would would get a chance.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
But you can only rebuild so much. In what I mean,
it is.
Speaker 2 (43:49):
Hard to have quality depth in the NFL throughout. I
think where teams really get hurt is when you get
that slew of injuries at one in one area. Then
it's like almost possible. But on a good team, well coached,
everybody knows what they're doing, so you can weather that
storm if they're sprinkled in different places, you know. So
(44:10):
if it's just a farm's coming in, you know, and
it's not two guys having to come in, then you
know a lot of times good teams will they'll be
able to handle that, you know.
Speaker 6 (44:19):
But my favorites is the Djenga theory. It's like you
know Jenga, Yeah, and it's like every piece isn't the same, right,
every Like they're all different spots and stuff like that.
So each team has like, you know, pieces that if
you pull it out, the tower is gonna come down.
Like Drake May gets pulled out the tower it goes to.
But like the are certain players that like it will
be wobbly, but you can probably like get away with it,
(44:41):
you know, I think, you know, Drake may Gonzo, I
would say at this point, Will Campbell, just because of
what they have behind him at left tackle is a
very you know, important piece, and you know, maybe a
couple of.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
Why they call them pillars, pillar falls, the house falls,
Destiny writes in I was having a discussion with some
friends about the GPS tra that the athletes use, the
ones that look like they're wearing a bra. What do
you guys think about the look of it? Well, I
mean it's underneath, you know, like the soccer players more
before the football player. It's kind of got a sports
(45:12):
bra vibe.
Speaker 1 (45:12):
It does, you know, it certainly does.
Speaker 6 (45:14):
It's not something I considered myself with too often, but
I do. Like he was asked again, verybel was asked
again today about the role of analytics. And we often
think about analytics in terms of like fourth down decision
making and stuff like that, but the sports sciences is
maybe analytics adjacent that we don't bring up as much,
And that type of stuff has come a long way
(45:35):
in terms of like almost being able to be predictive
about certain injuries, like especially like soft tissue and stuff
like that, where it's like this guy's had a few
too many live practice reps and like we're worried that
he's starting to get some wear and tear, so let's
pull him out of practice, you know a little bit
this week and or something along those lines. It's kind
of cool, like they're able to really almost guess, you know,
(45:58):
be predictive about anticipating injuries. You know, you obviously can't
anticipate all of them, but some of them, which is
kind of cool. That's what that thing does. Sports problem.
Speaker 1 (46:08):
But I think Destiny was just worried about what the
look it does.
Speaker 3 (46:13):
It could probably improve a little bit. It could probably
be like a necklace or something.
Speaker 6 (46:16):
Well there's sensors on it, right, Like it's a hard
monitor and like stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (46:20):
Yeaheah.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
You got to have something that's very tightly fit and
doesn't you know, impede any of the other equipment.
Speaker 1 (46:27):
So I guess it makes sense that it's style that way.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
It is pretty remarkable that, I mean, we look at
the portal or what she's a blanket on the name
the next gen stats that we watch and like the
next day when those that stuff comes out, all the
stats and everything that they they're able to tabulate max speed,
you're not even you don't even see all of them.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
I even imagined.
Speaker 4 (46:48):
But it's it's, you know, it's just really interesting sometimes,
like who ran the fastest yesterday?
Speaker 1 (46:52):
And like there is you know, it's cool.
Speaker 2 (46:54):
Yep, let's see who was this? This is Ram? Yeah,
Ram is writing in he was, he said, listening to
your podcast and your references to the great seventies team,
I thought about a player who I rooted against but
wish was ours as a comparison for Drake May.
Speaker 1 (47:13):
And that's Baltimore's Burt Jones.
Speaker 3 (47:15):
Oh god, Burt Jocks.
Speaker 2 (47:20):
He threw for over three thousand yards in a fourteen
game schedule, twenty four tds, nine interceptions, logged over one
hundred season passer rating only one of three in the seventies,
and won an MVP in seventy six. So he goes
down the line as to you know why he did.
But I hope he's not just Burt Jones, because Burt
Jones really wasn't that mobile. You know, he was a
(47:42):
pocket passer, but he says, these days, I think we
want to see a contemporary icon in our own players.
Drake May can't be Mahomes, Rogers, Alan or Jackson. He
has to craft his own identity. But in the past
there have been players who have had very similar skill
sets to May that have excelled in the most competitive eras.
If May can grow into what Burt Jones at his peak,
(48:04):
I think we should all be a static.
Speaker 6 (48:05):
We'll take it, I know.
Speaker 3 (48:07):
I mean, he's no Burt Jones.
Speaker 4 (48:10):
We'll throw that a policy if he can pick that
one up. But yeah, no, I mean I like it.
I mean it's just Drake. Drake May's got a car of.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
His own way, no question.
Speaker 4 (48:18):
There's a lot of focus on him this year and
his development and how does he do when the game's
hanging in the balance, in the clutch? You know, those
are those to me, are are the biggest questions that
want to see him him answer this year to get
the opportunity. Heard Abel bring it up again today in
his press conference, seeing a clip of of being good
enough to.
Speaker 1 (48:36):
Take advantage of bad football.
Speaker 4 (48:37):
That's the bar right now for this team, and I
think if they can get to that point though they'll
win some games.
Speaker 6 (48:42):
I hate like looking ahead to the schedule because things
change drastically, and like teams come out of nowhere and
they're good when you think they're going to be bad.
But if they can do the bare minim of taking
advantage of bad football, like Rabel keeps bringing up, the schedule,
sets up that they can win a lot a lot
of that. But do it now right right, and it
might not. It might be like the twenty twenty two
season where there's some rock fights in there and it's
(49:03):
not pretty. But like if they do that at the bottom,
you know, that's their their bottom, you know their their floor.
That's probably good enough for seven or eight wins with
this schedule, Like I mean.
Speaker 4 (49:14):
I think you need to too, Like I just I'm
like looking at the players out there and remembering some
of the training camp practices that I watched in twenty
twenty and twenty twenty one and twenty twenty two and
twenty twenty. You know, they're building a little better here now.
Like it just it feels like there's something going on
where it's not just like, oh please God save us
from Ander Stevens, and it's Travion Henderson is in back
of him now, and you know it's not Oh God,
(49:35):
Kendrick Bourne, please save us, like Stefan diggsists here now.
Speaker 1 (49:37):
Yeah, you know you're starting.
Speaker 6 (49:39):
A number one.
Speaker 4 (49:39):
That's one ben't see. But it's there's a lot more excitement.
There's a lot more reason to believe. I think in
the past you were kind of counting on the coaching
staff Bill Belichick specifically, would pull this together and somehow
make a winner out of these guys. It's not as
much of a lift. It feels like there's more talent
on this team across the board, and then there's more speed.
(50:01):
Frankly too, I think you just you feel that kind
of coming off the practice field.
Speaker 3 (50:06):
Again.
Speaker 4 (50:06):
We'll see if it's translated, but I just I think
there's a lot of reasons to be more optimistic right
now than you might have been in years past, just
based on the personnel.
Speaker 6 (50:13):
Well, the good news about going four and thirteen back
to back years as you pick up the top of
the round to get down right, right right, So you
picked Drake May, you pick Will Campbell, and then you're
in the top of the round every round. So you're
picking you know, hot players that like Travon Henderson and
Kyle Williams, Like these are guys we talked about and
guys that were on everybody's boards and everybody was excited about.
(50:34):
And when you're picking in the thirties and then you're
picking again in the sixties and you have that high
pick every single round that if you hit, and theory
you should start to hit on some of these guys.
Speaker 2 (50:43):
So, yeah, I didn't hear any you know, reaches this
year during the draft, you know, like.
Speaker 1 (50:50):
Now that was a reach.
Speaker 6 (50:51):
I mean, you know, Woodson probably the first one and
really the only one.
Speaker 1 (50:56):
Yeah, I mean the only one that was.
Speaker 4 (50:57):
But I mean as we watch him a little bit,
you understand what they were looking at. And he again
was involved today. And just to echo what I said
in the in the first part, you know, still looking
at Swinson and ponder like can one of those guys
be one of the answers to the thing we're talking
about with concerns about age.
Speaker 2 (51:13):
So, like I said at the top of the show, tomorrow,
we're going to be doing it again. Twelve fifteen is
when Rabel starts his press conference. We'll start our cameras
at noon, so we'll you know, hit up the field
and see guys arriving.
Speaker 1 (51:26):
Then we'll go to Rabel.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
Then we'll go to practice, and we'll keep the cameras
on and we'll be on until they tell us to
turn the cameras off, and then we'll be back in
the studio tomorrow at two thirty.
Speaker 1 (51:37):
To wrap it up again.
Speaker 2 (51:39):
So I guess it's public knowledge now that they're not
going to practice on Wednesday.
Speaker 6 (51:43):
Yeah, yeah, they emailed media. Yeah okay, it sounds like
they're going to be working on the field doing some
conditioning and stuff, but not an actual practice.
Speaker 2 (51:53):
Okay, so and we're not invited. We are not, Okay,
all right, So.
Speaker 1 (51:57):
It'll be two days of this.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
Uh. You know, you wonder like what's going to be
a good camp in Rabel's mind, Like, you know, what
will they do today and tomorrow that afterwards he'll say, Okay,
that was good, We're on the right foot.
Speaker 1 (52:15):
What are the things he's looking?
Speaker 4 (52:16):
I mean, I would just highlight one small thing, which
was I think we had one defensive off sides today
that was a penalty. But we haven't seen a lot
of false starts, mental errors. The sprints happened, I know,
Mike Reese, I think wrote about it in his notes
this weekend, like it's Drake May calling out the cadence,
then it's Rabel calling out the cadence working on starting
on time.
Speaker 1 (52:37):
We'll see if that stuff translates.
Speaker 4 (52:38):
But I think when Rabel talked at the beginning of
these camps and again he said today, these are really
extension of OTA's, it's just about being on the same page,
not making mental mistakes, not making the same mistakes twice.
Speaker 3 (52:48):
And from what I've seen, it seems like they're progressing.
Speaker 6 (52:51):
Okay. You'd like to hope that when you end this
that you have the foundation set of the playbooks on
both sides, so that when you get into training camp
you can have some fun, right, Like, that's when you
can really start scheming stuff up and really start putting
in the fun stuff into the especially on the offense,
so can you get your basic install installed. And then
(53:12):
usually the first couple of days of training camp is
a refresher of what you did during OTA's. But at
that point there, once we get into the joint practices,
they're really starting to scheme stuff up, and it's not
just you know, Frankly, a lot of the plays they
run are like high school teams run a lot of
the same plays, right, so once you get to that level,
you know, hopefully you're you're at a different level coming
(53:33):
training camp, where As I think the last couple of
years they were kind of stuck on basic install for
maybe a little bit longer than they wanted to be.
Speaker 2 (53:40):
Yeah, all right, we're going to wrap it up. Thank
you for listening. Remember we're going to be back at
noon tomorrow live at noon tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (53:48):
We'll see you then. Hey, this is deuced. Thanks for
tuning into the show.
