He's got a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (00:08):

Ertz drops back, Hastime loads up, proves Hey j Brown

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Hawks Ball presented by Delta, the official airline of the Seahawks.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Now here's your host, Jen Mueller.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
We are broadcasting from the Seahawks Podcast Studio, presented by Sony,
the official headphones partner of the Seattle Seahawks. I've got
a smile on my face right now. But John Boyle,
I am hot. I had just gotten over now Look,
it took me a couple of days to get over
that Arizona Cardinals game. Totally get it. My parents are
in town. We're watching the game together. I'm like, this
(00:51):
is the only thing I need to do on Saturday.
I'm watching the final pass. My mom is with me.
I'm starting to yell no as the ball doinks off
of Trey McBride's helmet, Why didn't they just run the ball?
And I'm like, Mom, truer words have never been spoken.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
And it hurts. Still hurts, Mom, still stings. Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
It took a couple of days to get over that.
And I'm like, okay, I am right back to center.
I am my feet are on the ground right, I'm
right back to center.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
And then what happened?
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Pro Bowl voting? John? I thought this.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
I thought this was a lock. I thought this was guaranteed.
Where is Leonard Williams saying?
Speaker 5 (01:33):
It's strangely enough on the alternates, which I don't get this.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
It makes no sense.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
I am so irritated. And it's not like it's not
just that we are being Homer's First. Of all, Leo
is one of the truly good guys. He is also,
by all standards and accounts the best interior defensive lineman
in the.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
League right now.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:54):
He currently leads, leads or is tied for the NFL
lead in amongst interior linemen and acts with nine ackles
for lost with fifteen. He's got twenty six quarterback hits.
Compare him to the guys who made it look Dexter
Lawrence absolutely deserving.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
He might have been Defensive Player of the Year before
he got hurt.
Speaker 5 (02:10):
Fine put him on there, Jalen Carter Videvea, both very
good players having great seasons. Leonard Williams is so far
ahead of them in those stats. And then okay, if
you like the more fancy, you know, analytical stuff, Pro
Football Focus grades, guess who's way above those two Leonard Williams.
I can't make sense of it. I don't usually like
to complain about East Coast bias, and now way it
(02:31):
feels feel like it. There's West Coast bias especially it
And it doesn't really help with my opinion on that
that they announced this at six am over here, Like, hey,
you know, we exist on the West coast too. It's
kind of hard to get up and do this at
six am, but yeah I did.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Some years.
Speaker 5 (02:47):
You can say, like we just talked about this before
we start, but like Jackson Smith and jack great season.
It feels like a Pro Bowl caliber season. But then
you look at the guys piccheck. Okay, I get it,
Like justin Jefferson, I'm on ross saying around those guys,
they're numbers are better, like they're deserving. But I can't
look at the guys picked the head of Leonard Williams.
Other indexter Lawrence and make sense of it.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
And Leonard Williams has had some highlights this year that
have made highlight reels.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Mighty two yard pick six and.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
He's getting in there. He's got the quarterback sets. Yeah,
he's gotten in there. And I just you know, it
was funny. We were joking like who did he make mad?
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Who?
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Yeah? I don't get it.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
I don't get it either.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I would Maybe he forgot him on the ballot. I
don't like. Was it just like an omission.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Maybe he's not out front and center enough. Maybe we
need him to I don't.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
It is proof, though, kids, that your work does not
speak for itself, and that you're gonna have to have
somebody advocating for you during the course of your career
because sometimes, as Mike McDonald pointed out, those contributions go unnoticed.
But it is hard not to recognize how much Leo
has done this year.
Speaker 6 (03:56):
Those guys, you don't realize how good they are until
you don't have them, you know. So is the best
way to put it. I mean, it's such a rare
skill set. There's only so many of these people that
are with that type of ability throughout the throughout the league,
throughout the world, and like I've I've said, we've got
got multiple happens to being in our on our football team.
So I know Leo is having a great year, but
you know, Jaren Murph, I mean, Hanks played a great
(04:18):
done a great job for us. Roy's done a great
job for us.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
We just we got to we've.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
Got a really really deep room with that can rush
the passer and play the run, so it's not like
you've got a personnel it all the time. And then
position flexibility of being able to play guys on the
edge and move them around, so you know, teams have
to find where our guys are and that's fun for
us to do.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
You got to love that Mike can use personnel as
a verb. I know, personnel.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
I think I might start to use that.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
Maybe we need to blame Mike McDonald for Leo not
making it because he gives this answer and he praises
everybody else, which you know.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
It's good, that's what the coach would do.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
But if we're talking about, you know, hyping guys up,
he needs to tell us just how dominant and how
he's doing it all, which is wrong and unfair to
the other guys. But hey, we're just talking about Pro
Bowl cases.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
I know that's that's true. That to be fair, Mike
McDonald's not specifically.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Asked about the Pro Bowl case, but I he was.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Just asked and the question was about, you know, just
the value of interior. We used to hear you know,
John Shiner and Pete Carroll both talked about this a lot.
But like how rare those interior game record types are
and that's why they went out and traded a sage
a round pick for him, and that's why they paid
him this offseason because those guys are.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Are very special and rare players are hard to get well.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
And you know, Mike talked about how sometimes you don't
realize their value until they're gone. I would say this,
that's absolutely true. And also Leonard's value this year is
higher than last year just because of how goofy his
season was and coming over midyear, he didn't have a
bye week, so he's like grinding for the entire time.
(05:46):
And it's not that they didn't make an impact, but
to see him with a full off season, to see
him from week one, I think it's made a big difference.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Oh and by the way, he hasn't played in every
game this year.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yeah, and he is still one sack away from being
the Seahawks player with double digit sacks since Frank Clark
in twenty eighteen. He's already set a career high with
fifteen tackles for loss this season.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
If he could possibly get three.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Sacks five quarterback kids, he would be able to set
career highs in those as well.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
I think he should do that.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
I think he should well.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
Getting ahead of ourselves, but our keys of winning this one,
I have about three sacks and five quarterback.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
Le only from Leo.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Everybody else can contribute whatever they want to on that front.
It might, however, be tough to get to the Rams,
and look, I think for the Seahawks, there's a lot
of different ways you can go with this conversation. I
don't know how much we are going to see from
the Rams that is similar to that Week nine matchup,
but I will point out that getting to the quarterback
(06:50):
has been a little bit challenging because the Rams have
not allowed a sack in the last four games. Now,
granted that was with Matthew Stafford, and we already know
that Jimmy Garoppolo is going to get the start on Sunday.
Here's what that means for preparation.
Speaker 6 (07:06):
You're going to prep off the off the tape that
like off of our first same thing or playing a
game second time, So you're kind of using all the
things latest games, our game the first time, understand about
our understanding of their system or the extent of what
we understand about it. And then they will watch Jimmy
Jimmy play through their lens and then we'll watch I
think Mike called the San fran game last week or
last year too, so we'll watch that one as well.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
Yeah, and what what he's referencing there is Michael Floor,
their offensive coordinator, called their Week eighteen game last year,
and they're in a similar situation of having already clinched
and resting some guys. So it is an interesting one
to prepare for because it's you know, normally division opponent,
and you know, you look at all their tape, you
look at the game when you played them last, but
different quarterback, potentially different play caller. So there's a few
different things to dive into. But you know, in a
(07:50):
lot of ways, just like preparing for any other game,
just maybe not as familiar. As you'd expect from a
team you've seen already.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Which is kind of interesting because there is seating that
spot for the Rams.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
Yeah, you know, I can see both sides of it, Like, sure,
your quarterback's the guy that's been banged up a little
bit in his career, and he's an older guy and
so valuable to what they do, and they've you know,
I can see being a little more cautious if you're
them too, because the number of injuries they dealt with
ear list, You're like, they had horrible injury luck early on,
So I could. I definitely see the standpoint they're coming from.
But it's also tough if you lose that game and
(08:20):
it costs you seeding and you get a harder matchup,
like it's you know, there's two ways to look at it,
for sure, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
And then as for what's on the line for the Seahawks,
you know, John, you kind of pointed out that I
think we look at it as fans, not US fans
in general, and you goes, well, what's left for them
to play for? Right, Like, if you're not going to
make the playoffs, why would you go all out? And
the truth is, every single one of these guys as
a competitor, and there are still opportunities On Sunday, you're.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
Always trying to win your next game. So this is
the next game that's number one. There's broader implications, get
into ten wins, trying to be foreign to in our division,
trying to play our brand of football the way we
know how, building building upon our foundation for you to come,
there's a lot, there's a lot, a lot at stake
for us this weekend. It's not the stakes that we want,
but those are always those are always in play.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
I think that building upon our foundation line is really
important for a team that's first year head coach.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Like, yes, they wanted to win more games.
Speaker 5 (09:13):
They did, they wanted to be a playoff team, But
you don't go out and make a coaching change for
the one year you're talking about. You know, yes, again,
this isn't to say they're happy with what they accomplished
this year.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
They wanted to do more.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
But when you made that change, which is a very
hard decision. Pete Carroll is a great coach. You do
a logger things. You're looking at years of how you
want this to look, and you when you get to
the end of the season you want to feel like, Okay,
we made progress in these areas, and ten wins versus
nine is progress.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
That's part of it.
Speaker 5 (09:41):
But also it's you know, how much the defense improved,
how all these things, And to go into the offseason
feeling like you're trending the right way versus going out
and playing a clunker of a game, that's that's not
how you want to end it. And we I brought
this up with DK as well, But it's like these
guys are just too competitive. There's you know, there's personal
stakes first of all, Like guys are potentially playing for
their next contract, they're playing for incentives. We know Gino
(10:02):
Smith has a lot of incentive side of this, maybe
a record that you know JSN can break Tyler Lockett's
receptions records. It just like they all have plenty of motivation,
and it's just like they're not just gonna we misplayoffs
so we don't care anymore.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
That's not how these guys are.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
You don't get to this level with without that drive.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
You are not competitive when it suits you.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
When you were at this level, you are competitive all
the time, one hundred percent of the time. I was
just talking to Clifavorl a couple of weeks ago, he
was like, when I left football, one of the hardest
things to do was to find the thing that I
could compete in and compete against myself in, which for
him it turned out to be real estate.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
But that it goes back to your point, like, this
is what they.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Do, and that man played for an own sixteen team,
so he knows what it's like to have to find
that internal motivation.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Yeah, he is also cheering for Detrait really hard. Dan
Campbell was one of his teammates during that seasonite. Yeah,
it's kind of a it's kind of a crazy full
circle moment. So we've talked about what's on the line
for Seattle and there are a couple of guys that
have some records within reach. You mentioned JSN closing in
(11:08):
on Tyler Lockett's record. It is truly incredible to think
about what kind of a security blanket he has become
for Gino and what that wide receiver room has looked
like this year.
Speaker 6 (11:21):
You know, Jackson's doing a lot of things that Lock's
done throughout his career, and locks got kind of a
style that he's kind of played all he's kind of
done everything. He's attacked the deep air of the field,
he's worked the you know, the intermediate windows, he's one
versus man, the catch and run stuff. I mean, it's
really how he's you know, got his hay and his
got his career started even in the return game, so
he can really he can mentor anybody. But if Tyler
(11:44):
Lockett was in my room, I'd be pretty pretty psyched
about that.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
It is kind of cool that if if Jackson does
inded break this record, he'll do it with Tyler on
the field with him, because I mean, we talked to
Jackson yesterday and the way he talked about just how
supportive Tyler's been. He you know, he Tyler is the
one that pointed out to Jackson a couple that he's
closing in on this record and told him he's rooting
for him to break it. And it's you know, I
think d Carey for just kind of a passing the
torch moment of like, you know, Jay is siding to
(12:09):
be the first tell you he's he is where he
is in part because of those receivers. Those two guys
especially have helped build him up and so for him
to be able to get that record with Tyler there,
that'll be goal. Hopefully, hopefully they get there.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Yeah, so five receptions needed for Jackson, Smith and Jig.
But meanwhile, if Tyler Lockett goes off and has a
big game, he's two touchdowns away from passing Marshawn Lynch
for third on Seattle's all time scoring list. If he
can get to one hundred yards, he's going to tie
Darryl Jackson for the second most one hundred yard games
in franchise history. We are broadcasting from the Seahawks Podcast Studio,
(12:43):
presented by Sony, the official headphones partner.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
Of the Seattle Seahawks.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
I think sometimes for these guys too, reaching some of
those milestones, whether it's Tyler, whether it's Jackson, heck DK
sixty one yards away from another thousand yard season, I
do think that that's just as important for their growth
and like building block as it is for the team
to have their own building blocks.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Yeah for sure.
Speaker 5 (13:09):
I mean, look, everyone in these guys will tell you,
get in the win is the most important thing.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
That's Jackson talked about that.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
You know, he wants to break the record, but more
importantly he wants to make sure they win that game.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
But like the individual stuff.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Does matter these guys, like they're all competitors, they're all human,
and again it can affect their future, like when they
have to negotiate their next contract. It helps to be
able to say I did X, Y and Z, So yeah,
I mean this, all this stuff matters to these guys,
and you know, as long as you put it in
the right place of I'm gonna do what I have
to do to help the team win, but I also
want to have some personal success.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
That's great.
Speaker 6 (13:40):
Well.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
I also think it's proof that you can do it.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
It's kind of like when you are lifting weights, right
and you're trying to like bump up your weight and
you're like, man, I can never there's no way I'm
ever going to get to whatever that is. And then
when you pick up the weight and you actually do
the rep, you're like, oh wait, I can do that, right.
So whether they come back and have the exact same
numbers the next season, I do think it's just proof
it can be done, and we all need a little
(14:03):
bit of that. Even if you have internal belief, you
still have to have proof.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
That it can happen. And we missed one more.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
Gino Smith can break his own franchise records for I
believe completions, yards and completion percentage.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Ye, he's got a lot on the line in this one.
And I was also going to point out that Derek
Hall needs two sacks to extend his single season career high.
He could get to ten. And with the way he's
been playing, that's not out of the realm of possibility either.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
No, he's he's having I guess like we saw boy
Mafey last year that big year too jump and both
those guys, it's so fun.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
To watch those guys take it big leap.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
I was just reflecting on some of that as I
was write and thank you notes to those guys man Like,
it's been fun to watch those young talents like take
on larger rules and really come.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
On to me what you thought when they got drafted?
Speaker 2 (14:49):
For sure, we are going to close out some thoughts
for this week eighteen matchup in just a little bit,
but why don't we.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
Pause for a word from our presenting sponsor.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Statistically, the world is losing color.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Just consider all white kitchens, beige baby nurseries, a sea
of gray cars. But in the hundreds of destinations Delta
flies to, you can rediscover color in the bright blue
waters of Hawaii, the emerald green hills of Scotland, the
very pink cherry blossoms of Tokyo, and so much more.
Sometimes opening your world is all it takes to open
(15:21):
your mind, which is why when you fly Delta, your
potential takes off.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
When you do Delta Official airline of the Seattle Seahawks.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
This NFL season.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Feel every play, every hit, every moment with the Sony
one thousand x five noise canceling headphones, the official headphones
of the Seattle Seahawks. With premium noise cancelation, you are
in the zone, no distractions.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Just pure football.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Whether you are in your living room or on the go,
you will never miss a beat with Sony headphones. And
once again this week those are going to be super
helpful because they tend to crank the volume and Sofi
Stadium pretty loud on the field, So I thank.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
You mint technol in there.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
They do that, and I need those noise I'll.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
Take that over.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
When they played in the Colseum, they had their like
hype man on the sideline with a microphone yelling do
you remember that guy?
Speaker 1 (16:09):
He's still on like a big I kind of.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
I mean that was only a couple of years ago,
but I have a really bad memory, and also I'm distracted.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
On the game day, he was on their sideline. He
was just like hype man throughout its terrible. Oh so, okay,
I'll take whatever noise they're cranking out.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Now.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Well, you know what, it hasn't really mattered what noise
the Seahawks have faced on the road because.
Speaker 4 (16:28):
They have been really good.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
And if they get a win, they would be seven
and one on the road this season. That would tie
the franchise best record, and they could also get to
six consecutive road wins.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
Yeah, that's pretty impressive.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
I mean, it's made for some really happy flights home,
which I'm glad about.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
But you know, that's another one of those good building blocks.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
It tends to be the opposite way for especially a
new coaching staff.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
So then next year you get the home thing figured out,
and boy and boy.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
We are going to be off and running.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
But it is always a little bit bittersweet when the
season ends, not just because you know the season is
going to end, but because not everybody comes back. It
is just the nature of the NFL, and it's part
of the messaging from Mike McDonald this week.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
Part of the messa this morning was that this is
the last last game that this unit is going to
be together. That's the nature of the NFL, and so
let's make the most of it. Let's go out with
a bang, do our thing and serve the guy next
to us and have fun playing good football and go
win a game.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Yeah, and that sometimes is as simple as that.
Speaker 5 (17:30):
You absolutely wish you were playing for the playoffs, but
like there's something you just said for finishing, feeling good
about it, finishing on high, playing for some pride, and
you know that's again there they feel like they're trying
to build something for the future and not that you
can't have a great year next year if you lose
this game. It doesn't have to be an issue, but
it sure just feels better in your off season with
(17:51):
with that ten next to the win total and coming off.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
A good win to end the season so well.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
And it also means that you're right there with the Rams, right,
So I mean, yeah, you don't have to close the gap.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Isn't very good if you win this game, you missed
the playoffs by the fifth tiebreaker, Like that's.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
That's also ridiculous that we had to figure out what
the fifth tiebreaker was.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
At least we didn't get down to number twelve on
the list, which would have been a coin toss.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Can you imagine that?
Speaker 6 (18:15):
What?
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Yeah, no way.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Breaker number twelve is a coin toss.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
Yeah. I don't know how you could ever get that
far without something for you, because.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
There's no way they threw that in as a last resort.
Speaker 5 (18:26):
You get down to point differential, you get down to
touchdown differential total touchdown scored. So to go through seventy
games with all that being equal feels impossible.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
But I would love to know who sat in there
in the meetings and if they put that in as
a joke or if that was legit and they're like,
you know what, we give up.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
There's no other way we can separate this.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Let's flip a coin.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Flip a coin. Yeah, that's pretty much what we do
every week.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
Right. Here's we are broadcasting from the seas Podcast Studio
unpresented by Sony, the official headphones partner.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
Of the Seattle Seahawks.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
This is usually the part where I ask for two
things the Seahawks need to do to get guarantee a
win on Sunday. I'm also going to switch this up.
It sounds like you're prepared for that. I did not
give you a heads up on this one.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
I that's okay. I've never prepared anyway, So.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
I I did just say that we were flipping a
coin every time we sit down and decide what we're
going to talk about.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
There's so many things that we're watching.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
In this game for personal reasons for the Seahawks, for
what this means for the organization. I was just going
to ask for the one, maybe two milestones you really
want to see reached on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (19:30):
I mean, I'll tie this to I want to see
like all of these offense when we talk about I
want to see a lot of these get hit because
I want to see this offense finish season on a
high note. Because it's been a little up and down
for the offense. Obviously last week they only managed six points.
So you know, I think if you can get DK
two one thousand yards, if you can get jsn his record,
if you can get those benchmarks for Gino, that's going
(19:52):
to mean a pretty good day for the offense. And
I'd love to see this offense against a good Rams defense.
I know, you know, McVeigh said they're not playing all
their stars, but you can't rest everybody, and their defense
is young. I have a hundred lod of those guys
will be playing. I'd love to see at Seahawks just
move the ball. You know, maybe let's let's call it
three touchdowns. I want to see three touchdowns out of
this offense, okay, And with that, I want to hit
some of those individual goals for the guys to have
something to finish the season on a strong note.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
I would also say the Rams total defense ranks twenty
sixth in the league. However, if you watch how close
the games have been in the last few weeks, they
have certainly taken some strides and they are and.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
They gave up a bunch of points to the Bills
in that win, and then Sadden they've been Yeah, you know,
I think it's three straight games where they're holding the
ponent single digits.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
Yes, so Seattle's offense needs to come out there.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
I'm going to add to that with Gino Smith, he
could become the nineteenth quarterback in NFL history with the
seventy percent completion percentage. First of all, I did not
realize how rare that was. And he has managed to
maintain that number the entire season, which is really impressive.
And as we talked about, I'd really like Leonard Williams
to get that sack and to get a couple more quarterbacks. Tedy'
(20:58):
again three so who could Well, he has at least one.
Speaker 4 (21:03):
He's getting three. Okay, well I thought I had my note.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
John decided to advise that one, so okay. Well, that's
how we're going to end today. And even though the
Seahawks season ends on Sunday, I think we should come
back next week.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
We'll be back. We're not quite done yet.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
You will see us next week on another edition of
the Seahawks Insiders podcast
