Speaker 1 (00:04):
The list is The Drive with Dale, Lolly and Matt
Williamson on your twenty four to seven Home of the
Black and Gold cass INR Steelers Nation Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Final hour of our coverage on location of the upmc
rooney Sports Complex. It is our ninth out of nine
shows down here for OTAs in Mini camp, and it
is the ninth out of nine practices for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Getting going right in front of us here today, so
you'll hear the moving and the shake, and you'll hear
some of the music and the horn and all those
different things in the background as it is another beautiful
(00:41):
day here on the south side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Dale, I did want to ask you.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
As well too, because you know, with you being on
the mend a little bit these last couple of days,
the one nice part of that has been you've been
able to take in some different things from some different
vantage points.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Yeah, you got to walk around.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Whereas you know, Matt and I have been kind of
under the thing here and it's great to watch the
offense in front of us. But as Matt has pointed
out a couple of times, the defense on the other
side of the field can be a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Uh, it's a challenge's just a challenge.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
It's it's it's you know, it's it's more than a
football field length away. I did want to ask you.
You said you've liked what you've seen from Joey Porter
Junior so far. Just just what you've observed from him
in these settings, you know, over these eight or nine practices.
Speaker 5 (01:23):
I just see a confidence level with him that shows up.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
He's reading it.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
You know, jumping, jumping passes, getting there, you know, even
if the catch is made, he's right there. He's he
just seems like he's just on top of his game.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
And we talked about Roger Jones in the last hour.
I guess it was it. But to me, he's not
a crossroads player. I mean, like it's he's good, can
he become rate?
Speaker 6 (02:00):
Sure?
Speaker 5 (02:00):
You know? Right? Right's he's I think he's established himself
as one of the top thirty two.
Speaker 6 (02:07):
Corners in the league.
Speaker 5 (02:08):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Now it's can you get
to be top fifteen?
Speaker 7 (02:12):
Can you be already?
Speaker 4 (02:14):
But can he be top eight?
Speaker 6 (02:16):
Right? Right?
Speaker 7 (02:17):
Right?
Speaker 4 (02:17):
Yeah? Stinctly you know those type of.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Guys, yeah, right, yep, yeah, no, absolutely, And you know
as you guys say that, Like, I'm reminded of that
clip that went around with him and Mike Tomlin last
year at practice on HBO Hard Knocks, where I think
I think Joey Porter Jr. Was like putting his contacts
in on the side of the field getting ready for practice,
and you know, Mike Tomlin jogs passed him, and you know,
you know, he gives him kind of a little a
little pump up and ready to go, and he said, hey, coach,
(02:41):
I'm just trying to be great. I just I want
to be great so bad. And Mike Tomlin said, you will,
but not today. It's it's it's it's gonna it's gonna takes.
It's a process, especially at that position. Like I think
you could probably argue, right, Matt, that other than other
than quarterback, that might be one of the most difficult
to pick up as a new guy in the national football.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
Without question, And it's a little volatile game to game,
year to year what they ask of you, you know,
Like I always I get ap Pro Football Focus every day,
but I don't really trust like their coverage rates or
their cornerback grounds.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
There's a lot of context that's missed a.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Lot of context, and what Joey's asked to do is
a lot more difficult than what most corners or some
corners are gonna be asked to do. Hey, follow around
Jamar Chase all day. Well that's different than playing Cover
two all day. No, no, no question about it. But
you know, Dale mentioned his maturity and looks like he
belongs to year three. I mean it's if you're hitting
(03:35):
the prime years of your career. That being said, we
can all use a mentor, and I think Slay will
be great for him. You look at Slay's career and
he's been a couple of different stuffs and asked a
lot of different things, an immense number of interceptions and
past defenses. You know, Patrick Peterson at the end wasn't
what he used to be, but he was still a
strong influence on the other corners. And Slay should be
(03:57):
really good for Porner.
Speaker 6 (03:58):
They just have a different streat point.
Speaker 5 (04:01):
Slay versus Peterson both great players.
Speaker 6 (04:04):
It's not the same though, there's different mentality. Yeah yeah,
like Peterson largely was never tested early in his career.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
He was yeah five back, Slay like Slave was a junkyard,
He's a second round back.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Right right, kind of like paying a scratching claw a
little bit more than Pat Pete did.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
So he's got that edge to him.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
I'm sure Peterson was a five star recruit, could have
went any call, anywhere. It's gonna be a top five
pick anytime he came out. Not that it was easy
for him, but he was the best player in the
field of the game his whole life, without a doubt.
Where that doesn't mean he's not tough. I mean he
was one of my favorite interviews we ever did.
Speaker 6 (04:41):
With Oh he's great, he was really really he's fantastic.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Fans see why he's doing that media thing now, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
But I do see, and trust me, the history does
isn't kind to over thirty corners. But Slay and Peterson
are not at the same stage of their career when
they became Steelers. One of them is coming off a
Super Bowl victory, really really well through the playoffs, and
it's still to me at one of those top thirty
two corners for sure. Like you mentioned where Peterson was
(05:08):
kind of hanging on twilight yea, yeah, yeah, you know
already talking about maybe safety or you know, right, they're not.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
It's not the same so you've mentioned you just mentioned
it a few minutes ago. I think you mentioned it
to me maybe last week or something like that. All
these days started to.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Blend together a little bit.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
But you, like you just said, what they asked him
to do is is challenging, Like it's it's it's what
they're asking them to him to do. Is it's plenty
on his plate. It's not easy? Do you do you
have any ways in your mind? And you know, we
were kind of talking about some bigger picture, defensive schematic
stuff in the in the first hour of the show,
that they could make things a little bit more easy
(05:47):
for him. Or is that not even for Joey Porter
Junior or is that not even a goal?
Speaker 4 (05:51):
I wonderdo I mean he to me? Slay's such a
better man coverage corner Slay has been over the course
of his career rear at times the one that follows
He's done the Porter, So he's done that stuff. Yeah,
So I wonder will they just left right it more
than they did, or will be a week to week thing,
or will Joey always still follow one? It's just another
(06:14):
club in the bag, you know.
Speaker 6 (06:15):
Yeah, they didn't do it as much last year.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
No, they didn't, all right, And I think that was
because that was you know, Dante Jackson just I don't
know that he was really capable of moving back and
forth more of his own cover guy.
Speaker 6 (06:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Yeah, Jackson limited what they could do quite a bit.
Speaker 5 (06:33):
I think Slake gives then that ability, you know, And.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
I think they prefer to left right it, yeah, as
opposed to follow. We mentioned this a lot, like if
Reeves follow or Dion follows someone all over the field,
his assignment's very easy. I follow Jerry Rice all day long.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
It's everybody else.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
But now they're ten have to adjust sure if he
goes in motion? Now who do I got all this
stuff too?
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Your communication better be crisp.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Yeah, I mean if you can left right it.
Speaker 5 (07:01):
Yeah, I think that's really the ideal thing.
Speaker 6 (07:04):
Yeah, you needs to be able to do.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
I think so too. Maybe there's some weeks where the
number one is so much better than.
Speaker 6 (07:11):
You can still Garret.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Wilson in week one is much better than.
Speaker 6 (07:15):
The number two clips in the bag. Yeah, yeah, but
you don't want to have to do it.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
Yeah. And and these guys will scheme you up to
no end to you know, like scheme porter into the
slot because he's covering these guys. I mean, you could
be a little more. You're a little more say in
the matter on the defense if you're.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Left right in right, yeah, yeah, yeah, where.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
The corners are at at the snap of the ball.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
That makes some sense.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
And again and on the lines of this conversation here
as well too, and we kind of talked about the
luxury it is to have a guy with a skill
set like Minca. If you're if you're able to left
right it majority maybe again not you know, not every
single snap, but more than you did last season.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Does that does that Porter's rookie year to deal? Absolutely?
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Week four he said I wanted to follow Nu Kopkins
or whoever it was, And then like.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
Okay, you're doing that.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Does Does that give you more freedom to use Menca
in different ways as well too? If you have that
true left right balance with with your two starting corners.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
I don't think that part matters as much. But I
do think having Thornhill gives you a lot more Minka
Okay freedom because Thornhill can be your single high Thornhill
has a lot of versatility as well, like a kz
bit better at all facets and again, MinC is like
the best deep middle guy in the league, and if
it could have one trait from a safety, that's what
(08:34):
I want. So you don't want them to get a
But he's also played linebacker and slot and I mean
he was Brian Branch in Alabama before he was before
Brian Branch existed, you know. So, yeah, he could.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Play let the team. He led the team and tackles.
Two years ago, Mia Fitzpatrick did.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
I mean, like, if you play the Ravens, he could
follow Mark Andrews around or Kittle or whoever. You know.
I mean, so I think with their defensive personnel as
a whole, Minka will do more stuff I guess is
a short wave of age. Yeah, you know, but mostly still,
I mean, he's gonna major in playing center field because
(09:13):
he's the best at yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
Right, yeah, I mean that's what he does. Yeah, and so,
uh you know, when you have that eraser, use it.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Yeah, yeah, And again it's it's it's a unique trait
to be able to do that at the at the
level that Mika Fitzpatrick does. What that means for your defense,
what you're able to do with your other ten guys
on the football field, and you know it is. It's
funny too, Matt like it all. It all gets back to,
you know, the ecosystem of it all, where some of
(09:42):
these coverage things and improvements in that regard is going
to help you get some more of those sacks that
we talked about as well too, and and vice versa.
When the when, when your when your pass rush gets
going as well too, it's gonna make life easier for
the guys on the back end.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
That whole conversation was complimentary stuff. And pass rush isn't
just about the pass rushers.
Speaker 6 (09:59):
You know.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
I mean, if you could get quarterbacks that aren't microprocessors
in the pocket to pat the ball one little bit
longer because they don't recognize the coverage, or you're not
real static over your coverages, or you know, all those
things lead to bad things for offense, you have no
question about it.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Right, yeah, and particularly some turnovers and third and longs
and all those different things that we are certainly looking
for here as it is a well underway today. Quarterbacks
in front of us, Aaron Rodgers very engaged here so
far today.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Man. That's a word I've been using since he's been
here all week. I mean rarely do I see a
ten second increment that he's not in someone's ear or
I don't know what his conversations are. He's, you know,
hundred feet away from me, but he's his body language.
He's always pointing, he's always asking questions, asking questions or instructing.
I bet that he's the teacher as much as a
(10:50):
student these three days. Yeah, yeah, fifty to fifty, because
I mean he's the first day I was here, he
was next to the quarterback coaches ear like away the.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Whole time, the whole time.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
The next day it was Arthur Smith. You know, today
I see him talking to somebody different all the time.
But it looks like he's like he had his arm
around pointing at him and you know, like he's.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Not just out here taking it all in. He's no,
he's he's learning involved.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
Very involved, very engaged, very purposeful.
Speaker 6 (11:20):
You know.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Yeah, and even if he's only doing again, I don't
think it's a big trade secret, but they're about to
do the individual stuff. Paul just comes out of his
hands different. It's it's really pretty to watch in person.
I like, he's these other guys are fine with the drills,
but that's a one of the lesson has ever done it.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
You know, he's a top five thrower, yes, of the
football and NFL history.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
I mean he's still light on his feet. I mean
he snaps that thing off. He's he's throwing. No look
passes drills and stuff like that.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
Or people are acting like he's a statue, right, I
don't see that at all.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
No, no, no, no, no, no, he's I think actually it
has been more mobile than I expect.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
More statues we certainly have.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
That is not him even at the even at the
age that he is at.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
And he's a year further removed from a really bad injury.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
You injury that affects his mobility in his movement that
is obviously very significant, one that we know takes a
long time to recover and heal from.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
But even just warming up, you know, like he'll throw
to a trainer or Friarmouth or whatever, and then they
flip them the ball and the quarterbacks on the other side.
Every time it's a different arm angoing, right everything. It's
not repeatable, the same thing over and over. It's repeatable,
different mechanics, you know, like he flicks it to the side.
Even these drills fall comes out at a different point.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
It looks like a middle infielder exactly, yes, drop down
here here there off the ground.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Right right right, it doesn't matter, and it comes with
perfect spiral in the numbers of his target. Perhaps he's
not even looking at his target right.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
I said this. I think you guys will get a
kick out of this.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
I uh, we had a little little neighborhood shindig gathering,
you know, all the kids in the neighborhood outside, you know, last.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Night, playing in the nice weather and everything.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
I might be just a little bit there to peel
back the curt and we might have had some refreshments.
Speaker 6 (13:13):
Abody up, they No, I did not.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
I certainly, I don't even know if. I don't even
know if I could beat anybody up.
Speaker 6 (13:18):
I'm talking about the kids.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
No, I let them. I let them be this time.
I let them beat this time. But the neighborhood bully
will come out later.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
And of course, as you guys can imagine, you know,
the dads in the neighborhood.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Were all like, well, it's it been like watching Aaron
Rodgers down there the you know this this week.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
And what I said to them was I said, if
you watch him throw and then you watch the other
quarterbacks throw, right, it's probably a lot like listening to
Dan Patrick do a radio show and then listening to
me do a radio show.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Right, Like I belong, I know what I'm doing.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
These other quarterbacks out here, they belong, they know what
they're doing.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
But it's just different with what you watch.
Speaker 4 (13:55):
And you watched all the quarterback drills, Okay, I mean
like some stand out more than others. But they were
all in.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
The same neighborhood, yes at least, yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Same church, but not you know, maybe not same pugh
as you like to say. Right right, this guy, my
daughter could be like I'll take him.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Yes, yeah, right, exactly right, exactly right.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
It's uh, especially thrown to his left, but she's.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
About to do which he's about. It's just efforts. I mean,
it's just it's a perfect spiral off his body. Yeah,
just just fantastic stuff.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
And it is like that.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
It's it's you know, it's like listening to Howard Starner
Rush Limbaugh and then turning on this west Yuler guy.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
I mean, I tell you what. It's just it just
sounds and looks and feels a little.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Bit different your dad playing the violin.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
That's exactly right.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
First, you know Verst some student at CMU that's clearly
a good violinist, but you know, not not somebody that
was you know, first chair in the symphony for for four.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Decades, right right?
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Uh, gentlemen, one of the guys that Aaron Rodgers has
been talking to today throughout this entire week.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Of course, his quarterback coach tom Arth.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Tom Arth spoke yesterday about Aaron Rodgers, uh and everything
that's transpired to this point so far. We'll hear and
discuss that when we return on the other side. Rolling
along here on the final day of many camp practice
at the upmc rooney Sports Complex, Wes Shuler with Dale
Lolly and Matt Williamson for a special edition of The
Drive on Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
This is the Drive with Dale Lolly and Matt williamsons
on your twenty four to seven home of the Black
and Gold cast inr Steelers Nation Radio.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Back here at the upmc rooney Sports Complex for this
special on location edition of The Drive. West Shuler here
with Matt Williamson and Dale LOLLI penultimate segment of the
day of our time period here, and of course, the
big story this week has been none other than four
time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers arriving in Pittsburgh, signing his
(15:55):
contract and participating in these three mandatory mini camp practices.
Of course, the football pretty well, we were all just
watching him again.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
It is I mean, guys, it's it is.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
It's it's like watching a you know, someone does stand
up comedy and then going to watch Dave Chappelle do
stand up comedy.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
I mean, you know, it is.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
You can see why he is one of the point
blank period greatest to ever do it. And while I
think we are all, you know, day by day here
getting more.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
Optimistic about what he still has left in the tank.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
As well, certainly a very loose, flexible, quick twitch arm.
Speaker 6 (16:29):
You know.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
I mean it's again, it's not just over the top
deliver the football. I mean, it's like Dale said, I mean,
it's Ozzie Smith or you know, that's.
Speaker 6 (16:40):
All I'm gonna say.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
It is like watching Ozzie Smith play shortstop.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
Yeah yeah, I like that.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
That's a real good that's a real good analogy.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
It's the last time I paid it. That's a baseball,
the last time.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
I mean, he's defensive special yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
And so obviously with you know, Aaron Rodgers, we have
wanted to hear from a lot of people on the offense.
We you know, heard from Arthur Smith and those conversations.
Another one of those guys, clearly is the quarterback coach,
Tom Arth, who will be working hand in hand, has
been out here and will continue with all the quarterbacks.
But obviously Aaron Rodgers and Tom Maarth took the time
a few minutes to talk to the media yesterday about
(17:17):
what they've been working on so far, what he's seen
so far, where they're at in this process. Here's what
the Steelers quarterback coach had to say.
Speaker 8 (17:23):
Fo Times your long standing relationship, and he said yesterday
you have the most beautiful drive you've ever seen.
Speaker 6 (17:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (17:30):
Yeah, he's given me. He's given me that hard time
on that for a little while now.
Speaker 7 (17:36):
Yeah, we used to.
Speaker 9 (17:37):
We were in the off season program together in Green
Bay and Mike McCarthy's quarterback school, which was, you know,
really just an incredible experience for me. But so much
was done in our footwork and mechanics and things like that.
Speaker 7 (17:50):
And you know, I think I did well with it.
Speaker 8 (17:53):
What was he like then? What kind of impression did
he make on you initially? And how's the relationship developed
over the years.
Speaker 9 (17:59):
Yeah, you know, initial impression of Aaron. You know, first
of all, you know, I recognized this talent immediately. I
had just you know, come from Indianapolis and you know,
spent three years with Peyton and obviously you know, saw
the way he played and the way he threw the
ball and all those things, and it was really immediate
to me, you know, seeing Aaron and saying, man, like,
you know, this guy, this guy's got like some really
(18:20):
special gifts.
Speaker 7 (18:22):
You know.
Speaker 9 (18:23):
You obviously you know, the arm talent and the athleticism,
the release, all those things that are so evident, but
also you know, just his approach to the game. You know,
he's a very intelligent person. And I think you know,
I was able to you know, see that in him
as a young player. That was you know, that was
Aaron his first offseason, you know, going into his second
year in the league, and you already sensed like, okay,
(18:45):
like this guy's this guy's playing on a little bit
of a different level than most. And you know, just
as far as the person you know, he was awesome.
You know, we we got along very well. You know,
played a lot of golf. I ate a lot of meals.
There's not a lot to do up in Green Bay,
so you know, that was that was kind of what
we did. Yeah, we yeah, worked on football and then
you know and played some golf and we had time.
(19:07):
So you know, he he was awesome and that was
a really you know, it was a really special time
in my life and really fortunate to have had that experience.
Speaker 8 (19:14):
Obviously, this is refore removed from that.
Speaker 6 (19:19):
Uh what kind of player is now?
Speaker 9 (19:21):
As far as he can tell, you know, I still
think he's at the top of his game. I think
he's a top quarterback in the league. And you know,
you go through and free agency and you know you
watch all you know, the available free agents and quarterbacks
and you know, Aaron uh, you know, was extremely impressive.
I mean, he still throws the ball very well. You know,
he's accurate, he's so smart and you can see his
(19:43):
decision making, doesn't take a lot of sacks, doesn't turn
the ball over. You know, it was exciting, you know, opportunity.
You know, when when when that started to to to
become a possibility for us. You know, it was really
you know, really hopeful that that it would all work out.
Speaker 7 (19:58):
And you know, I'm glad. I'm glad that it did.
Speaker 8 (20:00):
This kind of a plus to any sport. But how
does a guy who's not a Hall of Famer coach
a guy who's one of the best to.
Speaker 7 (20:05):
Do with you guys? Well, you know, I think it's
you know, I think.
Speaker 9 (20:08):
It's just part of that that relationship and you know,
realizing that, you know, from my perspective, you know, there's
so much to learn from Aaron, so much to learn
from his experience and how he sees things, how he
sees the game. And I think, you know, part of
you know, our relationship now and you know, coach player
type of relationship is me you know, understanding that, understanding
(20:30):
how you know, how he sees it. You know, the
ways that he's been coached in the past. That's important
to me. What's worked, what hasn't you know, what what
is helpful to him, what isn't you know? Those are
all things that we're gonna you know, talk through and
and work out as we you know, prepare for Latrobe
and the season beyond.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
How much does it help having a level of comfort
not only.
Speaker 7 (20:51):
With us, with him too.
Speaker 9 (20:52):
Between you two, I certainly think it is helpful for me, uh,
you know for sure, you know, just having having a
past and his with Aaron, I think, you know, knowing
who the person is and I think that's the biggest thing,
and you know, and knowing like, Okay, well this is
this is a guy that you know, we got along
very well, you know, in the time that we spent together,
and you know, it was very excited, you know, to
(21:14):
to see him the first you know, I saw him
a couple of years ago when I started coaching for
the Chargers and you know, ran into him when we
played the Jets, and you know, it was just awesome
to see him. And you know, now to to be
in this situation where he's here, you know, in Pittsburgh
and I have a chance to work with him on
a daily basis, you know, it's really a special opportunity
for me for you know, for a lot of different reasons,
(21:34):
personal and and and just the growth.
Speaker 6 (21:37):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (21:37):
You know that it will provide me, you know, as
a coach, being able to coach a player of his,
you know, experience number one, and certainly the success that
he's had and you know, and also you know, being
able to learn uh you know from him is going
to be is going to be very valuable for for
my development.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Did you play a big part in basically like the
recruiting of him here?
Speaker 6 (21:57):
Uh?
Speaker 9 (21:57):
No, you know, not really, you know he he uh
when he came in for his visit, you know, it
was it was great. I actually I knew that something
was going on. You know, Mike and Omar we were
We're scheduled to be at a at a pro day,
and all of a sudden, it was like eight and
o'clock morning and I saw them both walk by my office.
I'm like, Okay, something's going on, but I didn't know
exactly what figured. Aaron maybe shown up at some point,
(22:20):
and sure enough, you know, maybe about an hour later,
he walked right into to my office. You know, I
just had no idea, you know, nobody gave me a
warning or anything. Aaron just walked in, and you know,
it was awesome, you know, it was it was great
to see him, and you know, being able to spend
some time with him, you know like that, and you know,
and just respecting his you know, his process and you know,
in his his timeline, and you know that was uh,
(22:43):
you know, I think I think that's something that you know,
was expressed from from the top of our organization down
and certainly you know, from our standpoint was just hey, man,
like this is this is a special place, you know,
with a bunch of special people, you know, a special
tradition and history and you know, one of the you know,
truly iconic organizations in the in the National Football League.
And you know, I think it ended up being a
(23:04):
good fit for Aaron.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
He said, you are the smoothest drop he's ever seen.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
I don't I don't know what it kind of compliment
is that for you when he says something like that,
And how much were you able to teach him early on?
Speaker 7 (23:12):
You know, I don't know.
Speaker 9 (23:13):
You know, we we had a great time together. It
was you know, Mike McCarthy's you know, first year in
Green Bay. We went through the quarterback school, which is
kind of a famous deal, you know, for for Mike McCarthy,
And it was so beneficial for me. I really, I
so much of you know, what I believe as a
coach and how I coached the fundamentals of playing the
quarterback and really, you know, even just schematically so much
(23:34):
of that. You know, I can I can take back
to my time in Green Bay and being around you know,
coach McCarthy and you know, in that quarterback school. You know,
it was just it was so valuable for me, and
you know it was fun. It was just Aaron and I,
you know, we were the only two there and you know,
I look, I still got the binder in my office
and it was about one hundred and twenty hours of
meeting time, you know, in that you know, in that
(23:55):
off season from like February to whatever it was April,
you know, before OTAs and all that started. So you know,
all those meetings, all that time on the field together,
you know, it really certainly helped me become a better player.
And I'm sure Aaron, you know, would would would echo that.
You know that that you know, was a big part
of his foundation and you know, his career and being
(24:15):
able to get off to such a great start when
he first became a starter, and obviously to have a
success that he's had over the extended period of time
that he has, you know, is is elite.
Speaker 7 (24:24):
You know, it's rare.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
That was Steelers quarterbacks coach Tom Arth speaking after Wednesday's practice,
and you can imagine heavy.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
Aaron Rodgers conversation there.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
I spoke spo glowingly about him, as you can imagine.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
And yeah, I like they've they've got.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
A background together, they've got some some common ground already.
They were with with the Packers at the at the
same time period, right when Aaron was was coming out.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
Tom Mars had been around.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
But with the Colts for a few seasons, spent that.
Speaker 6 (24:56):
Off season with Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (24:59):
So yeah, and I hear in the league this long
to you as you mentioned, no doubt you've seen him
when he was with the Chargers and all those different things.
And and I think people do who Aaron Rodgers was.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
People certainly will certainly know who Aaron Rodgers is.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
But you know, for for for them to have some
basis of a relationship obviously already before Aaron even got here,
I think that that's got to help, you know, the
proverbial hopping on a moving train.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
I would think. I mean, again, if Rogers them in
the league this long, he's probably got a relationship with
just about the summery, you know, and what they do
going forward is obviously more important than than anything. But
I do keep bringing up Arthur Smith's history within the system,
the the floor ties, you know, all those things, and
(25:47):
I don't care what system it is. I don't think
Rogers is going to take long at all to master.
It's not like understand that, I mean master it. And
we'll see how it's relationship, I mean somebody we never know,
but I'm sure it sounds like it's starting well. But
see what his relationships are with the coaching staff and
all those things. But man, it's really optimistic now. And
you can just even listen to our voice that yeah,
(26:08):
he's not publicly doing cartwheels, but you could tell he's
pretty excited. This is pretty cool. We could be pretty
good at this position.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
Yeah, no, absolutely, How could you not be optimistic? How
could you not be excited about it? And yeah, he's
he's got a real kind of interesting background in his
coaching career. Tom Tom Marth does you know, started in
the collegiate ranks with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at
John Carroll.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Then became that.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
John Carroll's a football factory.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Football football factory coach, coach GM and it's it's crazy,
and that's where he's from is from Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
That's obviously where John Carroll is located.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
We're not we're not hold that against we won't hold.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
That against No, it's a it's okay, listen, we like
some people from Cleveland.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
Like two or three days after I was hired, there
was the whole scouting staff where we're at this bar
in Cleveland, and they all introduced us.
Speaker 6 (27:00):
In our new scow.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
Matt Williamson from Pittsburgh dumped on my.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Head a lot of jealousy in those in those foods
from from that from that side of the congregation.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Uh so yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
So he was with John Carroll from twenty ten to
twenty sixteen, different roles, this oc quarterback coach up the
head coach there for for four seasons as well. Then
he went to Chattanooga as a head coach for two years,
Akron as the head coach for two years. Uh and
then before uh coming here to the Pittsburgh Steelers organization,
was the pass game uh specialist pass game coordinator for
(27:37):
the Los Angeles Chargers as well too, So extensive extensive background.
This is his second year. Second okay, yeah, this is
his second year as well. Two so yeah, you know,
getting the the opportunity to to once again work with
a high level, future Hall of Fame type quarterback. But yeah,
you're you are absolutely right. In those seven minutes, you
(27:58):
can kind of hear the and I think the enthusiasm
in his in his tone.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
Yeah, and everyone around us has the same tone, you know,
like right right, Like I'm sure there was some listeners.
I mean, we're all on Twitter. I mean I've had
a million tweets. I don't want him to go with Rogers,
just go with Rudolph. He's been waiting now too long.
Blah blah blah. If you were down here, you wouldn't
think that.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Exactly right, It is exactly right, you would, right.
Speaker 6 (28:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
I am no one in this No one that I'm
looking at thinks that.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
No, not at all.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
I don't think there's anybody down here that's rolling their
eyes about his presence.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
Some level of excitement.
Speaker 5 (28:35):
Yeah, I think once we get to training camp and
people see yeah, yeah what it looks like no, get no,
get it. Yeah, it'll it'll be obvious.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
I think when like like Russell Wilson had some of that,
had a lot of that yes, yes, this is this
is better better, this is a different.
Speaker 6 (28:54):
Beats this goes to eleven, right, it goes to eleven.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Why not just make ten louder because these go to it.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
Yes, what you did right there was pretty.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
Nice to Yeah, it's just effortless. Everything just looks effortless.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
And your right there when we finally get the training
camp and you know, like there's a guy and sometimes
more than one, but there's a guy at every training
camp that it feels like every day, you know, somebody
in the stands or somebody on the field would get
a video of George Pickens making a crazy circus one
handed catch, right, and it blows up.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
All over social media.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
That's gonna happen with Aaron Rodgers and a throw that
he makes about every single day in Latrop.
Speaker 6 (29:29):
No doubt, Yeah, yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Yes, we have got to get to our final break here.
As we bring this thing on home led Zeppelin style
down the home stretch, we'll get into some final kind
of observations and thoughts as we wrap this thing up on.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
The other side.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
It is a special edition of the Drive West Huler
Here with Dale Lalli and Matt Williamson at the upmc
rooney Sports Complex on Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers
Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
Least, He's the Drive with and Matt Williamson on your
twenty four to seven home of the Black and Gold
Steelers Nation Radio.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
It's our final segment of mini camp coverage here on
Steelers Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
It is a special edition of.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
The Drive West Yuler with Matt Williamson and Dale Lawley
here to close us down on this final day before things.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
Will go a little quiet, hopefully, right. You better stay
out of the news.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
You better be quiet over these next six or seven
weeks as Dale, you and me both, I promise you
I'll stay out of the news as well too and
be nice and quiet, as I'll be out of town
a few times here over the next six or seven
weeks as well to a family holiday July fourth trip,
and then a couple of beach trips with my family
(30:54):
and the in laws as well too that we're looking
forward to. But before we get to any end all
of that general and this is our you know, ninth
of ninth practices that we've been out here for the
last few weeks. Six Ota practice is now three of
these many camps.
Speaker 4 (31:08):
Twenty seven hours of coverage.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
Twenty seven hours of coverage, right, biggest thing at the
forefront of your mind, that observation thought something that you
didn't you weren't a place that you weren't at, you know,
three weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
Something.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
It can be an individual, it can be a unit,
It can be a bigger picture thing. It could be
something very nuanced, but something that you're feeling differently good
or bad about here today on practice number nine that
might not have been the case two three weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
I'm going to kind of toe the line here in
terms of what we're allowed to talk about.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Yeah, because I'm not gonna I know, it's not the
easiest question to answer no, because.
Speaker 4 (31:46):
I'm not going to mention any specifics, but I have
an eyebrow raised or an year open to more scheme
changes on both sides of the ball than I might
have expected. Okay, just not massive overhaul, you know. I
mean they're not gonna run the running shoots.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Or like bringing in the chip Kelly up.
Speaker 4 (32:05):
There's a couple of things I've seen that a guy
will keep to myself that I can't wait to get
back at camp and say, is that something that's real?
Or then we can talk and then we'll talk about
it right, all right, and you'll hear me a camp.
Go so I saw this at mini camp and now
we're seeing it at camp or that. If you're with
the team, or if you've done this as long as Dale,
(32:26):
you realize these practice seconds minutes are so valuable that
if they spend a lot of time practicing something, it's
not an accident.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
They're gonna use it or a lease experiment with it.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
And it's not reinventing the wheel or anything. But there's
a couple of things on both sides of the ball
that I've just open to change.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
Yeah, I see a team. To me, guys, I think
it's being slept on a little bit. Yeah, I think
there's a better football team than a lot of people
were giving it credit for nationally and even somewhat locally.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Yeah oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 6 (33:05):
Just win a playoff game.
Speaker 5 (33:08):
I think just a team that could uh surprise, and.
Speaker 4 (33:13):
That is, you know, the local sentiment with so many
people this seems not going just.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
Get a bar draft.
Speaker 4 (33:20):
Guys in charge, blah blah blah. Maybe they'll win, it's
not how they feel about it.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
No, I think just a team that really, when I
look at it, they're Sue it's they've still got Super
Bowl aspirations.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Doesn't change.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Doesn't change, Yeah, no, no, it does not.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
We brought this up yesterday. I mean just and Dale
and I talked about to be a text. I mean,
he's covered a team thirty three years. He's seen three
losing seasons.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
You know what I mean, since pretty crazy.
Speaker 4 (33:49):
After truck Noll's third season, They've had seven losing seasons
and none of them were leak even catastrophic.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
A three or four winding season.
Speaker 6 (33:59):
Yeah, like doesn't happen.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
I added up all the win loss records in those
seven losing seasons. That all I mean that have happened
in my basically my fifty two years on the planet.
And they still won forty percent of their game right
in all seven loose seasons combined, you know, like get it.
I mean this team wins games. I mean only the
Patriots have won more games in the two thousands than
(34:21):
these guys. They win games.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Yeah, and that's with now many different quarterbacks, multiple head coaches, right,
multiple general managers.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Yeah, I'm with you, guys.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
What they're doing.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Guys, if you're sitting here.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Today telling me that there's still the kind of upper
echelon tier right of the Chiefs and the Bills and
the Eagles and the Lions, and the Steelers aren't.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
In that group. Fine, fine, yeah, but.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
I think they have a great chance to be as
good as anybody in the next group down.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
Does that make sense?
Speaker 2 (34:52):
Like three or four teams that we consider not even
I'm not talking super Bowl contenders. I'm talking super Bowl favorites, right,
Like in Detroit and Philadelphia they expect to be in
this super Bowl. Kansas City, they expected to be in
the super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (35:02):
The disappointing year if they don't.
Speaker 5 (35:03):
Correctly correct something happened.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
I you know, you were kind of talking about like
leveling up in tiers in terms of quarterback play.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
I think the Steelers could be in that very next tier.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
Yeah, I think I think they are now.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Yeah, when you start.
Speaker 5 (35:16):
Looking at uh, you know some of the the Denvers, the.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
Chargers, Yes, Houston.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
Bengals, Houston, the Bengals, this seems better than Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
I think so too. On West and I had that
exact thing conversation. I think it was Tuesday, but I'm like,
I'll think, awesome, great, no arguing, right, but everything else
train wreck right right?
Speaker 3 (35:40):
The first round their first round draft picks left practice yesterday.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
He's out, he's gone.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Yeah, Schmerz Stewart just left and hasn't practiced yet, hasn't
practiced yet. Uh, your NXT one pick for a defense
that desperately needs help and.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
Was a guy there was a project to begin with, right,
I mean he needs everywherepi. Yeah, And I was saying
this like herbig walked around with Derek or TJ. Watt
like crazy Harmon's learning from Hayward. Well, Hendrickson's a nice
role model for your rookie. They're both unhappy, don't do anything.
(36:14):
And don't you think the backup left guard sitting there
eating lunch with his buddies, going what are we doing?
I mean these guys talk, they know.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
Yeah, Yeah, Absolutely. It's a little a little a little
different over here, certainly.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
And I think that's I think that's that's very well
said by both of you. As it relates to getting
to training camp here in a in a few weeks.
What are you most excited to get the answers to.
Is it some of that schematic stuff?
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Is it that for me? Is it?
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Is it how the offensive line can look against this
defensive line? Is it you know how guys like DK
Metcalf and Darius Slay can help take their units over
to the over the top.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
I mean obviously all these things, but all the above.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Yeah, and you know I also want second team one obviously.
Speaker 4 (37:06):
That group or a week, I don't know, you know, I.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
Also wonder too, exactly like I'll be I'll be interested
to see exactly what the pecking order looks like behind
Patrick Queen at the off ball position as well too,
Like Peyton Wilson expected ticket big.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
It's Peyton Wilson number two certainly, but going up.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
But you're you know, you've got I mean getting holcome.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Back, That's what I mean, getting colehol come back. Garrison
at that position.
Speaker 5 (37:31):
The depth that they built defense is really good.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
Well, absolutely, it's the clear cut. Patrick Queen is number one,
Peyton Wilson is number two. Still, what they can do
with the depth behind those guys as well, if.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
You like the defense into D line edge, inside linebacker, safety, corner,
if we just call it what five positions I named
or whatever. Corner is the only one you have any
concerns about that? Yeah, I mean the other ones are
rich and deep and might be cutting NFL players. Yeah,
I mean it's pretty nice to have that side of
the ball that fortified. Yeah, you know what I mean. Yeah,
(38:07):
another guy. You know, we spent the better part of
a segment earlier talking about Roger Jones. I can't wait
to watch Falton.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
Oh, I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (38:15):
He's another one we'll be talking about like crazy, like, oh,
we didn't see first round pick next year. We've been
talking about the last yeah, you know, three days like crazy.
Speaker 5 (38:21):
You just watch him move around. It's really looks different.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
He had that same kind of eye test stuff that
we've been talking about with Aaron Rodgers here over the
last few days. Troy Falton, who's passing that same eye
test on the offensive line.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
And Dale has this advantage way more than us, and
you know, over his career to such a strong degree,
you kind of just get vibes even if you don't
speak to a coach directly or someone in the organization directly.
Like over the last couple months, there wasn't a lot
of concern was Rogers coming or not, you know, like
when you're down here, just.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
Kind of there was a very quiet confidence and almost
assumption that it's gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (38:56):
But I think Falton, who's similar, Like that's Mary.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
Got a guy here. Yeah, I completely agree with you
in that, Regalda.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
And I think I think Steeler fans are going to
quickly remember why this guy was a top twenty pick, the.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
Same impact that they got last year.
Speaker 6 (39:14):
And is Zach Frazier.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
I'm about to say the same thing.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
I mean, you just look at where he was at
when he got hurt in camp last year.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
There were people I thought he was he was yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:25):
Yeah, yeah, yeah exactly. So o line, like, the secondary
to me is mostly a who's your weakest link position
totally and if you have won, you can scheme around
it totally. You know that's fine, But it's also nice
to have a top five center and maybe a top
five right tackle too, you know what I mean, Like
I would rather right, I mean, I don't want stars
(39:48):
and holes, but I like stars, and I think he
might be a star.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Yeah, you could have two on that offensive line, which
and I know it was different positions, but would remind
you of the days of Pouncy and the Castro and
the two stars.
Speaker 5 (40:00):
When you start talking about that run game and you know,
being better up front again.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
Right, there are two good places to start, So I
feel nostalgic with the pit recruiting assistant walking around here
and introduce myself. And I remember when the brickishaw Ferguson
and Nick Mangold came out of high school. I watched
their tape and they both went in the first round
of the Jets and were long dirt. They're not going
the whole fame, but.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
They were really, really really good at.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
Center tackle exact same age for like twelve years, yep.
And they had a pretty darn good line for twelve years.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
Yeah, and high pedigree studs at those who tackle in
a center spot. I'll start there.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
It goes a long way.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Yeah, it goes like it goes a long way, certainly
to to build and building the overall strength of the unit.
And like you said, even if you feel like you
might have one weak link, but one who's not as
good as the others, it's one of those things that
you can make up for the unit.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
Can play at a at a at a very high level.
Speaker 4 (40:57):
If one of your five is ways off than the others,
everyone knows that they're gonna tackle him, but you can
scheme around it. Gets Harry when there's two Yes, yes,
but again, if you have a stud that's also.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
Nice, Yeah, absolutely absolutely does.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
And yeah, I think you're right.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
I think that's one of those quiet that Again, normally
we'd be we'd be talking about much more Troy FEALTONU
and his return of the line up here. But when
you've got Aaron Rodgers for the first time, DK Metcalf
for the first time.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
Of Metcalf is one thing I want to throw out
about him. We spent a big almost a segment with
him and he yeah, replayed the interview, But one thing
that stood out to me too is he's he's kind
of regarded as a build up speed guy, but I
really know so the last day or two that when
the ball hits his hands and then he accelerates, he
(41:47):
shifts to another gear. Yeah, quicker than I expected from
him for such a big guy. It's catch burst fluid. Yeah,
it fluid, but abrupt, you know, like more than I
would have best.
Speaker 3 (41:58):
And you see that person, you know, yeah you do,
and it makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Caught a slant, I mean, he's got like a deep post,
makes a lot hit sense all his hands and then
he doesn't just jog after he took it. Up another level.
It was like, oh, that would be hard to tackle
because he's two hundred and forty founders.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
And that's why you see him shrugging off those smaller
defensive backs all the time. He's got the size, he's
got the explosion. He's got the hands too, like.
Speaker 4 (42:20):
Force that ball him A and A is better than Yes,
I know the was there, but the A is better
than I thought.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
And I feel like like he just when that ball
hits his hands, it doesn't move.
Speaker 3 (42:30):
You know what I mean. I mean, he's he's got
he's got mits and that ball just does not move
when it hits his hands. It's I'll tell you what Fellas.
I am. I know, very excited about the training, can't no.
Speaker 4 (42:39):
People worried about the wide receiver room rightfully show and
I do think another will be added. But it's better
today than it was three and sixty five days ago.
Speaker 6 (42:46):
Yeah, I think it is.
Speaker 4 (42:47):
Austin's a better player than.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Better today than it wasn't January or February, you know,
and it certainly is better than it was three hundred
for multitude reasons.
Speaker 4 (42:55):
I would take Metcalf over pictures.
Speaker 2 (42:56):
Yes, yes, I I'm completely with you on that, and
I think you hope you're hoping your deptht you know,
the Calvin Austin's, the Roman Wilson's are taking step forwards.
Speaker 3 (43:06):
And giving you solid contributions as well too. It's been fun, dude,
it has been fun. Gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
I think that shit about doing right is the right
is the cloud coverage rolls in as well too.
Speaker 3 (43:16):
Perfect out here is a practice will.
Speaker 4 (43:18):
Roll along next weekday and I are going to be.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
Rolling yes, and that's that's important to as well too.
You guys will go back to your normal time frame
motes and I. You guys will be doing three days
a week motes and I will be doing two days
a week.
Speaker 3 (43:30):
So we are never resting. That's right, That's right, we are.
Speaker 2 (43:34):
We are never going away here, you know, much like
the NFL, we're never going away.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
We might go a little bit.
Speaker 2 (43:39):
Quieter for for a few weeks, but we are never
going away, certainly. And we will have plenty more uh
