Speaker 1 (00:04):
He's the Drive with Dale Lolly and Matt Williamson on
your twenty four to seven home of the Black and
Gold Steelers Nation Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Welcome back to the Drive.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
I'm Dale Lollie, he is Matt Williamson and I'm Matt.
The Steelers kicking off their rookie mini camp today with
the upmc rooney Sports Complex. A couple of interesting names,
they're they're a couple of veteran guys.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
More veteran guys, I should say, ok, first one to me.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
So they've got Nick Boyle, the former Ravens tight end. Uh,
he's trying out as a long snapper. Really yeah, interesting
that maybe great if he could do both, you know.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
That's what I'm thinking.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Like, he's he's listed at two hundred and seventy pounds
as a player, and he was a blocking, big, blocking
tight end. Yeah, he's dropped some of that weight to uh,
you know, to be you know, more flexible, tolong snap.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
And cover punts and things. I mean, you gotta run.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
You could kill two birds with one stone there if
you figure out a way. If he if he's good
enough to be along, that's the first and foremost. He
has to be good enough to be a long snapper.
But if that's the case, if he's if it's close,
you might keep him, just because.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
That's what I say is if it's close, then he
gets the you know, the benefit of the doubt, like
you know better than I would. But sure seems like
they're happy with Christian Koons. You know, he does a
fine job and maybe an A minus long snapper. I
frankly don't know. But if boils a B and you
can do other stuff, well, Christian, you might be out
(01:41):
a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
It's just it's a strange transition.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
It's one you don't off to see a guy who's
in his ninth year in the NFL and all of
a sudden he's going to try to make it as
a long snapper.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Yeah, that's what I was going to ask you, is
has he ever been a team's number one? I'm sure
he don't.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
I don't believe he has. He did it in college. Okay,
you know, so he has that and he's been a
tight end. Yeah, you know, but the thing is, again,
if he if he can, if he can hone that
a little bit.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
He knows what it takes to play in the NFL and.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Say, there's value there though, and I give him all
the credit in the world for reinventing.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Himself a little bit too. Yeah, Yeah, it's it's interesting.
I mean, he's made enough money in his career.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Also be like on your kickoff team and you know
or you know, kick return team and certainly field goal
team and things like that.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, there's there's a lot of value there. Obviously.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
You know he can he can go out there and
not just be the long snapper but run down and on.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Kickoffs as you mentioned. Yea.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Now, whether he wants your long snapper doing that if
you only have one active on game days another story.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
True?
Speaker 1 (02:51):
True, true, true, But I mean he knows what takes
to be in the NFL, and as you said, he
was ading what a nine year career, that's not an accident.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
No, right.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
The other guy that they have in their camp roster
this year Bryce Perkins.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Oh really, the UCLA running back. No, Bryce Perkins the quarterback.
Oh I was thinking of Paul Perkins from like ten
years ago.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, even if able too old. But Bryce Perkins actually
started a game and won it last year for the Rams.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Okay, now I know what you're talking about. Yeah, he
has he's been an emergency quarterback type guy.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah, Like, if you go into the seat like I
would assume and I don't know anything here, I mean
they'll they'll sign five or six guys who are here
for tryouts this weekend. I mean those would be two
that I would look at and say, you're probably If
I'm the Steelers, I at least give Nick Boyle and hey,
come to camp with the camp And the same with
(03:50):
Bryce Perkins, Like, hey, we're going to keep four quarterbacks here,
why not keep the guy who's actually played in NFL games.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yeah, say you're thinking about pass to the roster. We
talked about Boyle, but what if Gentry gets hurt in
the first preseason game, Boyle might be almost a lock
to make the team. Yeah, Perkins is probably your third
best quarterback today.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, I mean he's he's certainly he's done it. He's
lined up and again lined up in stadiums, as Mike
Tomlan likes to say. And his only start last year
he won it for the Rams.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Okay, that Rams team was awful and that yeah, that
was not a good situation. And we're not saying that
he's a diamond in the rough or he's going to
be their long term backup, but he might make the team.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, I means as third quarterbacks go, having a guy
like that, who's who's you know, played snaps? I mean
you know, is he Mason Rudolph? No? No, no, no,
but you know, you know, if you if you had
to play him where he had to be your number
two if something were to happen to your starter. Okay,
at least you got a guy who's lined up and
(04:57):
played in the NFL as opposed to who gotta start
Skylar talk this week?
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Yeah, right, right right, And he's a good athlete too,
and he's been around the block a little bit.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, So I just thought I thought that was interesting that,
you know, there's are two of the guys that that
they had here.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
There's some other names there that you know, is it
Keen Butler? There? No, the the The first of all, you're.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Only allowed to have six veteran guys, yeah, you know,
in for rookie tryouts and those kind of things. Secondly,
the XFL guys can't sign until the fifteenth.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Okay, I was curious about that.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
You and I have an Yeah, that's that's next week.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
So a lot of people were freaking out about that,
not saying it is going to happen, not saying it
isn't going to happen. But those those XFL guys can't
sign until next week.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Okay, so that's all rumor and speculation. But yeah, okay, gotcha.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Yeah, So you know, I think.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
We'll see some of these guys sign him and they
get some again interesting bodies in there now and and uh.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Can you explain this to the to our listeners, because
I don't know that everyone quite gets it. Is. Yes,
you know, your draft picks are there, you know, I mean,
Joey Porter Junior is there, as as are the rookies
and Andrew are undrafted free agents that you signed to
a contract. But there's also a tryout going on, you know, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
They'll invite a bunch of guys in.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
They'll those guys will sign a waiver and they'll get
an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
And they're they're guys that they liked.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Or have some kind of ties to, but they don't
want to they don't want to give them a contract yet.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
They want to see, Hey, we want to come in.
We want you to come in. See how you learn.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
We have four guys at your position, and we're going
to take a look at and we're probably going to
sign one of you.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
We're consideringly bringing you to camp.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Yeah, and they've they've found guys that way in the past.
Duck Hodges was one. Another guy was the linebacker out
of West Virginia. H I'm blanking on his name right now. Yeah,
I mean, but he played six years in the league,
you know. So you find guys like that that that
(07:15):
just come in and and make your roster and and
and help make you better. Does that mean they're going
to have a long career.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
No, but of course not.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
But they might put an NFL uniform on be in
a stadium like you said, you know.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Yeah, So.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
I know one thing teams are doing more this year
just from reading, and I don't know if Steelers are
not in order, I really care, but I think it's
really it's a good way to do it is, especially
your early draft picks are going to do very very
little on the field. They'll do a lot of board work,
coaching stuff, learn the system, and then these tryout guys
(07:51):
will do more on the field stuff, you know.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
And that's not really the way the Steelers do it.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
They they treat they treat them all the same, like,
you know, they want their Their rookie mini camp is
to get the rookies ready to practice when the veterans
come in.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
You put words in your mouth, But I've heard you
say this before and I like the way that it
comes across, Like, rookie mini camp gets you ready for
mini camp, right, you're ready for training camp.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Yeah, you want these guys that that's why they bring
in a number of veteran guys, Like their first year
players are all guys that have been on their practice
squad and they have those guys come to these rookie
mini camps.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
And they kind of lead the way. Okay, here's how
here's how we run this through. Here's what we're going
to do. Now.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Okay that that the horn just went off. Okay, now
we go over here. So you don't have your rookies
running around like it's the Keystone Cops. Yeah, you know
when the when the veterans are right and you're wasting Yeah,
you're wasting your your veteran players time trying to tell
the rookie how to line up.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Well said, well said. Plus, hey, Broderick Jones, if you
threw Roderck Jones without any of that stuff into first
day of training camp. That's like algebra without free algebra,
you know. Yeah, and you want to get the calculus.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
And the thing is, you want these guys, you want
those rookie draft picks. You want to give them the
best opportunity to play right away and contribute right away.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Will you do that by.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
You know, giving them these these quizzes, this this little
learning situation this weekend again, the position drill. The position
coaches are out there doing all the same drills that
they'll do when we start doing our training or our
Ota shows in a couple of weeks. They're doing the
same drills for this for this rookie mini camp that
(09:44):
they're going to do for that one. But they're giving Okay,
here's your here, we're going to do it slowly. Here
for rookie mini camp. We're going to go through the drill.
But in two weeks from now, when we do this
drill again, you're going to know exactly what what's expected
from you.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
Yeah, and you're a rookie center. And in drill one,
the nose tackles lined up directly over you, and drill two,
he shifts to a shade. Now you've got to change
your blocking technique a little bit, but we're not going
to give you the cheat sheet for that. You're supposed
to know that by now, or you know the wide receiver, well,
this is cover two. We ran it against man, but
(10:21):
you need to sit down and cover two and not
run through it. We expect you to know that by now.
And kind of as you mentioned, it doesn't sound like
a big thing, but it's sure as the coaches, especially
on a very strict time budget, learning how to practice
like an NFL player doesn't come overnight.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
It's huge, right, and you only have because of the
way that the CBA is now.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
It's minimal, right.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
You have minimal time to work with these guys. And
if you're not getting it, especially if you're you know,
one of these undrafted guys or something you're not going
to be around.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Well you can get guys hurt. You're wasting your linebackers
coach time telling them where how to drill. You know,
we don't need you to go one hundred percent run
through a wall every snap or you're gonna hurt Cam
Hayward and then I'm gonna kill you, you.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Know, And we get two hours a day on the field.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
It's not like before we're okay, we got a morning session,
then we got an afternoon session. No, this is important stuff,
and like, h we don't have time. I don't have
time to explain it to you five times.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Not exactly you need to know now, which I always
feel bad for those guys because it's you're also not
as talented as people you're competing against. More often than not,
you've never done it before. You're just trying to stand
out in any way possible that they talk about you.
So you're not gonna be like they told me to
go seventy five percent. I'll go seventy five percent and
(11:43):
not look good, you know, like it's a tough situation,
you know, if you can't even get into a preseason game.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
By the way, Terrence Garvin was the guy who was
thinking of before. Okay, yeah, linebacker, uh, basically a safety
turned linebacker.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Hey.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Matt Miller ranked the top one hundred best twenty twenty
three NFL draft picks, steels and team fits. I thought
we buzzed that there's several of the Steelers picks ranked
very highly on this list. His number one steel in
the draft Jackson Smith the Jigba to the Seahawks. He
(12:16):
had him as his pre draft ranking on him was
number five and they got him down at twenty.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yeah, I mean we both thought there was a slim
chance he'd be there at seventeen.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Which he was, so go figure out. His number two
steel was a CJ. Stroud to the Texans.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
He took him two. Yeah, I don't know about that.
Jalen Carter was number three, Okay.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
I mean I thought he was the best player in
the draft, but we know why he didn't go first
overall or right a couple his number in the top ten.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yes, yeah, his number four steel and this was really
value because well he was picked thirty two.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Joey Porter Jr.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Wow, Okay, he had him ranked as his.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Number fifteen player overall and he went thirty second, So
that is good value. That's the same basically the same
distance as Jackson Smith and Jigba being his fifth rated
player and getting him at twenty fifteen picks later.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
I mean, there's many episodes of The Drive. People could
go back and look where both of us said Porter
at seventeen.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Okay, you know, Devin Witherspoon was five.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Bjon Robinson was six, Bryce Young seven, Will Anderson eight,
Anthony Richardson nine.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
I mean some of these weren't really steals.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Michael John Michael Schmidt's at ten to the Giants he
went to He went with a fifty seventh pick, and
Miller had him ranked as his thirty eighth best player.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
The Giants, much like the Steelers, are getting very good
post draft grades, and I understand it. I mean they
needed inpial line help that it's immediate help, and you
get him in fifty seven.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Great at eleven was Hendon Hooker. I picked sixty eight.
Miller had him ranked twenty seventh.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Hooker. Wow.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Yeah, So I mean even if you had him in
the thirties somewhere or forty, they get him in pick,
they get him in the third round, give them the
third round. That's great value. So he had Devin a
Chain as his ninetieth ranked player and he says it
was a steal. Maybe this is the best fit kind
(14:29):
of thing for the Dolphins to get him at pick
three eighty four. It's not a steal, so it had
to be the right fit exactly.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
So I host the podcast Locked on Dynasty, and we
did all of our pre draft rookie ranks, and I
was very low on a chain and going into the draft,
I said, the only way I'll boost him is if
he happens to land with the Dolphins, because I said,
the deep it is often perfect for him. So in
(14:59):
that like, I understand what he's saying here.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
The thing with me with a chain is all those
outside runs and I think he averaged like nine yards
per carry on outside runs at Texas A and M.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
He's not going to do that in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
No, No, he won't. And again I like the scheme fit.
They will know he'll get the jet motion stuff. They'll
throw them the football. The backs in front of them
aren't particularly great. His style of run is very raheemoster,
stick your foot in the ground, run as fas as
you can and smack into something.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
You know.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
But still, tiny backs don't usually produce.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Not really.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
His number thirteen best fit or bargain was Broderick Jones
to the Steelers.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Yeah. I really thought they had no chance of the guy.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
No, I mean I wrote about it and then lead
up to the drafts, I'm like, well, you're probably not
going to have an opportunity to get one of the
top tackles because they'll be gone, and I thought the
cost to move up to get one of those guys
was going to be much more than what it ended
up being.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Yeah, I'm thinking, you're you're probably gonna have to give
up a second.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
That's what I was thinking too.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
You know something, even even if you have to give
up your third, that's probably more than you're gonna want
to give up they give up before.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Yeah, what was it one to twenty overall or something
like that, right, which is nothing really?
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Yeah, well, good draft to trade up fourteens.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Christian Gonzales fifteen Jalen High to the Giants, sixteen Darnell Right.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
To the Bears.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
Okay, that's a scheme fit too.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
That's a scheme fit.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
Twentieth player that went tenth. I mean, that's not a steal, right,
Nobody said that's the steal. But he's a big, mauling
right tackle that fits that offense. And they like Roderick
Braxton Jones on the left side, so they were looking
for a pure right.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
Seven teams. Peter Skronski to the Titans. That's gonna be
scheme fit. Eighteen Nolan Smith to the Eagles at thirty. Well,
that's a bargain.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
He was one of the people that were really high
on Nolan Smith, who yeah, all over the place on him.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
He had him at fourteen nineteen. Was Will Levis to
the Titans at pick thirty three. He had him as
his twenty of US.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Man at all, but at that price, I think that's
a good pick for them.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Yeah, absolutely, I'll either.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
You know, he has Kaylee Ringo to the Eagles as
a bargain in the fourth round at one oh five,
he had him as a fifty six rated player. I'm
not sold on Ringo at all.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
No, me neither. I think he's very straight line ish. Yeah,
we may not be talking about him in two years
in a deep cornerback draft. He just, you know, just
didn't do it for me. Brian Branch at twenty one,
he had him as twenty eighth ranked player. He went
forty fifth overall. That's pure bargain.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Same thing with Drew Sanders at twenty two, Adham as
his thirty ninth rated player. He went sixty seventh to
the Broncos. Same thing with Trenton Simpson. The inside linebackers
fell in this draft for whatever reason, really Ravens got
him a pick three eighty six. He was this thirty
seventh rated player. This was interesting because this team got
(18:12):
ripped for taking this guy they could because they traded
up to get him.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
JayR.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Brown at twenty four went picked three eighty seven and
the forty nine Ers traded up to do that. He
had him ranked seventy fifth in his ratings. Like, did
they really need to trade up to go get JayR.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Brown?
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Probably not. I thought they had. I thought they did
the least with what they had, and I understand they
didn't have a first and second round pick, but they're
their draft for the cards they were dealt. Was my
least favorite of all thirty two teams.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Yeah, it wasn't.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
I don't know that they helped themselves a ton Paris
Johnson's at twenty five. That's pure scream scheme fit. I
mean they had a serious need at left tackle. Then
we get to Darnell Washington at twenty.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Six, three Steelers in top twenty six.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Uh, they got him at three ninety three. He was
Matt Miller's thirty rated player. I mean, you get the
thirtieth rae that's a first round grade basically, right, Darnell
Washington and you got him a picked three ninety three.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
Like, clearly Miller would not have given the Steelers a
hard time at thirty two if they took.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Washington, right. Wow. So I don't know if Keanu Benton
made this list. I'm just scrolling down here through some
of this other.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
It's three or top four picks. Oh, Corey Trice comes
in at thirty seven. Yeah, he's his eighty third rated
player and the Steelers got him at seven, seventh round,
two hundred and forty first pick overall.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
I mean, even if he's a medical reject, which he
can't be because he'd had a great combine in his final.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
He plays four years in the league as a seventh
round pick.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
Right, Okay, that is the eighty third best player in
the draft.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Yeah, that's that's great value.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
I mean's go look at the Steelers seventh round picks
the last decade. I mean, what kind of careers have
they had. I mean, if you even make the team,
it's a home run, right.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
And this is a guy who has talent. I'm looking.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
I don't know if any of the other Steelers made
the list here in terms of scheme fit. Honestly, Keanu
Benton should have for scheme fit for.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Scheme fit, right, I think he's an ideal guy for them.
I'm scrolling and scrolling here too. Maybe he shows up
and there's gonna be one hundred names on this list.
But yeah, you know you're you're Tyson the Lululu comp
certainly in terms of usage, style of play. All that
adds up to me very very well.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Yeah, I had a chance to talk to Keanu today
and this first time i've you know, I watched him
at the Senior Bowl. Obviously watched a lot of tape
of him. I mean he's again he is Tyson to Lululu. Yeah,
and the body type, just the you know, the way
he plays, he uses his hands, you know, wrestles in
(20:52):
the phone booth. And Tyson a Lulu went tenth overall
in his draft.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Yeah, yeah, I mean obviously it was a theme two
of ascending prospects young guys. Well, Benton's getting to be
a better and better pass rusher. His combine and especially
Senior Bowl were better than expected, you know, like everything's
exceeding expectations, the most recent stuff.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
Yeah, so I think Steeler fans are gonna really like
that pixel he didn't make the list, but the Steelers
had what four in the top fifty. Yeah, he tells
you what, Yeah, tells you what kind of Uh. I
think price was what h Pryce was at thirty nine.
So for of the top thirty nine, values or fits
were with the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
That's amazing. That's an amazing draft.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
It really is. I Mean we've said this often, but
if we did a mock the week before the draft
that ended up exactly as the Steelers did with two
little trades in there, I think would finish it up
and be like, Wow, this is really good. Probably on
really probably.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
Not gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
Yeah, yeah, we're really gonna be able to get that
fourth round pick back and be able to get Nick herbig.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
Probably not convenient.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
It's only gonna cost us a fourth round pick to
move up in the first round. Yeah, that's not gonna happen.
