Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Point After on w d v E Pittsburgh,
brought to you by Parks Casino. The entire Steelers radio
broadcast team is here to break down the last game.
Here's your host, Missy Matthews. If we got ground to defend, defended. Um,
you know, if you got bullets and the gun on

(00:21):
the offense, you fire them. Um. It's gonna be a
lot to be downtrotting about in the game of football. UM,
from an EBB and flow perspective, And more than anything
at the at the early stages of this season, when
you got new guys, you just want to know that
they're in at their game, UM, that they don't shrink
in the moments and and so that was just really

(00:43):
good to be in some of the moments and see
some of the things that we saw. Everybody. Welcome to
the Point After, Missy Matthews with Bill hill Grove and
Craig Wolfley. That was Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin following
the Steelers three to twenty overtime win in Cincinnati. And
this first segment is brought to you by Brian Patton
and associates. It's all about the benefits Billy have you

(01:04):
survived and come down from the adrenaline rush that was
Sunday in Cincinnati. I am out of gas. Uh. It
was crazy. I mean, my son Bill, who spots for
the other team, I think three times, had wiped the magnets,
you know, the pins off the board, getting ready to leave,

(01:25):
and then had to put them back. And all I
can say is Mecca for president. The man is amazing,
you know. I mean you just when you think you've
seen just about everything in the game of football and
then you have something like this unfold, and just I
love the game. It's so amazing, and the amazing individuals

(01:46):
who play the game who rise to the level of
the moment. And nobody rises the level of the moment
better than Manca and some of the other guys that
were with them. I thought it was astounding because when
when the offense just wasn't getting it done, that defense
kept going and doing one more one more magical moment,
one more thing to be able to turn that ball

(02:08):
over the offense, one more way to deny points to
the Cincinnati Bungles, and by golly, you know, I I
just thought they earned earned the Bungle's reputation again. Well,
the Cincinnati had ninety four offensive snaps in Minka, magic
mankan Terrell Edmonds and a Killo Witherspoon each played a

(02:29):
hundred of those snaps. There on the field for forty
three minutes and forty three seconds. They're probably getting massages
right about now, maybe, you know, stay in the hot
tub for twenty four hours. I don't know. I mean,
because that's a lot of body beat down that occurred yesterday. Certainly, absolutely,
you know, when you when you look at the group effort,
it was just amazing to me, Billy, I couldn't even

(02:51):
conceive how they could keep coming back and getting back
up one more time and play as fast as they did. Yeah,
that was amazing. That's digging deep. It was. But if
you can't, you know, dig deep for a team that
just made the Super Bowl and also a team that

(03:12):
had a player accused you of quitting a year ago, Uh,
you can't know. And you know what's funny you were
talking about Minca. He is definitely one of those guys
that did not forget what Tyler Boyd said after the
first loss, that one was in Pittsburgh, but then the
second one, forty one points that you give up that
was just a miserable game and just the feeling that

(03:32):
the defense had to have um after that performance, and
he said, you know, we we don't forget that, and
we know whose house we're going into. We know what
they were able to accomplish last season while the Steelers
watched them from their couches, and that performance, keep in mind,
is against one of the most explosive offenses we've seen
in the last ten years in the game, no question

(03:53):
about it. But I was surprised that Tyler actually said that,
you know, boyd um because he's k and he knows,
and he knows what football around here is. Maybe he
wanted to do that. He was poking the bear for
to me, uh, no specific reason. There's no reason to
do that, you know, I mean, he knows, and to
go out of your way to do that. I thought

(04:16):
that was kind of interesting. Well, I don't know what
he said after the game yesterday. I didn't read his
postgame quotes, but I know Mika and them were pretty
happy with what they were able to accomplish. Can I
give props to my partner who opened the broadcast by
saying the preseason matters. I remember going on the Cincinnati
Enquire a website this morning just to see what they

(04:37):
were saying, and one of the headlines from one of
the writers is, we didn't take the preseason seriously enough. Well,
there's no doubt about it. It's it's a heavy handed lesson,
you know. I mean, there's a lot of people that
say about Mike Toma, what do you you know? You're crazy?
You got tackling up in training camping, you do. Hey,

(04:57):
you got to get some of that done or you're
gonna find out when when the bullets are live and
reel and flying around, that you don't quite have what
you thought you had, you know, I mean, you got
to know, and you've got to let the guys be
able to experience it. And certainly even in practice, practice
speed and practice conditioning are not the same thing as
game speed and game conditioning. You've got factors of the

(05:20):
adrenaline dump for the young people that are still learning
how to handle all that stuff. You know, you have
the situation where defensive units gotta learn to handle their
checks and balance his stuff, making the calls at high
speed with high end offenses, you know, in the front
of big crowds and so forth. Um quarterbacks got to
be get used to getting their samurai six cents when

(05:42):
the past rushing gets hot and the kitchen gets hot
in there. So those are all things that you can't
mimic in a game, and you've got to have some
experience in them. And I go with this, I go,
do you realize that Pat Mahomes but through nineteen passes
in the second preseason game? All right? I mean Pat Mahomes,
all right, he doesn't need that kind of work, does he? Well?

(06:03):
Obviously Andy Reid thought he did, you know, and that's
why he was in there. And it's funny you bring
that up to you know, Miles jack somebody new to
the Steelers organization and training camp. I remember him saying, like,
we're doing live tackling. We're wearing pads. You know, this
is We're so accustomed to it in Pittsburgh. But somebody
coming from Jacksonville where he never really experienced that in practice.
It just sets a different tone, in a different tempo.

(06:25):
And I think Manka, t J. Cam, all of those
defensive guys yesterday, they certainly set the tone quickly, which
got the Steelers off to a fast start. There's no
question about it. I mean, you can I remember one
time in my career I reported camp and I pulled
a hamstring on the first day. Dead gumm it. So
for two weeks I basically did nothing, and then we

(06:46):
got going in the preseason. I entered my first preseason
game without having hit a lick, you know, just because
it just turned out that way. And I could tell
you how discomb populating that whole thing was to go
out there and go, yeah, I don't know, I haven't
hit anybody, you know. I mean it's I haven't even
fallen down at a high speed. So it was very

(07:07):
freaky feeling. And certainly that's what the guys want to
get over, because you don't want to get to that
first game, such as what Cincinnati did. And then all
of a sudden you've got the you know, you've got
Joe Eppendeck to me over there, you know, slinging that
rock around, and all of a sudden, what happens. Think
bad things happened. And Joe Burrow is a high profile quarterback.
This guy is good. Think about it. Last year, in

(07:29):
two games of his passes he completed. Man, he you know,
he threw only two interceptions in two games. And here
there was three and one half alone Billy obviously, you know,
still talking about the Steelers defense. The injury to t. J. Watt,
I think is maybe the shadow hanging over this win,
the victory the Steelers were able to, you know, succeed

(07:51):
yesterday in Cincinnati, coach Holman called it an upper body
According to national reports, it's a peck. No one knows
exactly the uh circumstance says of how bad it potentially is.
I know a lot of national people have said he's
going to seek a second maybe third opinion. Um, but
I just thought, you know, for him to go out
the Steelers, not to have him at the end of
the game, for Alex Highsmith to keep pushing through what

(08:13):
he was able to accomplish, it felt like, you know,
it was potentially going to be a letdown, and they
certainly did not let that happen. No, and uh, you know,
we all pray that he's not gonna miss half the season,
three quarters of the season. I hope it's a month
at most, but we won't find out more until probably

(08:35):
maybe not even tomorrow, maybe later in the week, especially
since he gets those other opinions. Uh. Yeah, that's that's
a tough one, and it was a cloud that hung
over everything because, let's face it, we all should have
been dancing in the streets of Cincinnati, and uh, nobody
felt like that. When they get on the bus to
go to the airport. There was a lot of heavy
legged guys getting on the bus. When we left the

(08:57):
stadium there and had it out towards the air field.
He leave, anybody did you know? I don't think we
but you know, just watching him go up the stairs,
you can see boom boom. I mean the legs are
a little heavies. They're climbing the stairway to get onto
the flight, you know what I mean. So, yeah, it was.
It was one of those classic games. It's it's automatically
one of those legendary games. You I just can't even

(09:20):
really trying to wrap my brain around what occurred. It
drives you nuts. When we were in the locker room
following the game, It's Travisky was getting ready to head
over to the podium and someone from the Steelers PR
department was joking with a few of us saying, you know,
it feels like it's eight o'clock, and he turned around,
he goes, is it really eight? He was not convinced
that it was potentially not eight. He really thought that
it was potentially eight based off of what happened on

(09:42):
that field. Um, but I just think, you know, it
just proved how you have to block it out. And
you would know this better than anybody will. If it
it stinks, you probably don't like that it continues to
go on, but you know there's a chance, and there's
nothing you can do but continue to focus on the
next play. That's you know, even Minka blocking that straight point,
you can't celebrate. You gotta turn around and say, all right,

(10:03):
here we go. That's a great point. You know. Never
did they lose the focus of the moment. You know,
that's one of the advantages of having strong leadership such
as you have with the five captains and certainly Captain
Cam setting the pace right from the get go. But yes,
through each and every you know, we're gonna win, we're
gonna lose, we're gonna win, we're gonna lose, each and
every one of those things. To have that sort of

(10:24):
resilient strength that is so incumbatent in that locker room
with those guys and led by Cam, I just can't
say enough because that was reminiscent of a good old
seventies eighties rock'em sock 'em type, you know, punch it
out and keep going at it, the things that Joe
Green used to, you know, represent and talk about. I
just I was just amazed at the resiliency of the

(10:47):
defensive unit and the offensive unit because they Mitch got
him loaded up and going when he had to. You know,
he came through and got the job done when he
had to. And by the way, you gotta tell him
he's got to wear that suit on every road. Now
you're a fan. I thought the suit was tremendous. That's
a strong suit. Now, man, now we're gonna make it superstitious.

(11:09):
I don't think we can say enough good things about
the Steelers defense when you look at seven sacks three
by Alex Highsmith, Cam Hayward, Arthur Mullett, Roberts, Blane, t J. Watt,
four interceptions, Manka, Cam Sutton, A Killer Witherspoon, t J.
Two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery. Billy coach Tumlin really
put on the Steelers defense leading into the season that

(11:29):
he wanted them to be dominant. They accepted the challenge
and now they put it on tape. I think that
was a dominating performance what I saw yesterday. Okay, did
they make mistakes and they let some big plays happen, sure,
But I don't think Cincinnati had any more big plays
in the Steelers. Dude, if you look at the top
ten big plays of the game, I just I just

(11:50):
thought that defense was outstanding. Now a lot of people
are saying, no, no, the offense has to catch up.
I believe this, and I could be all wrong. I
offenses through the season can get better. I think defenses
are what they are. That's just my opinion. Well, defenses,
they they will get better. It can get better through

(12:12):
communication and playing together normally, all right, But yes, it's
the evolving offense where you start to find the specialties
of the players that you're putting out there and you
start to use him in a way that all of
a sudden they start to blossom. For instance, we're talking
before you know, we're talking about Pickings. Man, I wanted
to see a little more of Pickens. Yeah, I mean,
you know, a p I in the end zone. Okay,

(12:32):
that's cool, all right, he got one catch. There's more there.
And as as Mike says. You know, he likes to
say there's more meat on the bone there to to
grind away. And and uh, I can tell you that. Um,
you know, this young man was. I got to meet
his dad by he had some family down there on
the sidelines. It was really cool, you know, and at

(12:52):
he's a fine young man. And then his his dad
is pretty proud, you know, and pretty it was. It
was cool to meet him. And and so just I
think this, there's so much more to unpack with this
young man. He's gonna be something. But Chase Claypool's another.
And of course Deonte just the cat made ridiculous. Ridiculous
that's not even a word that really captures it. But

(13:13):
that's as close as we can come to it. Zouchs,
I don't know. Circus it was a circus catch. Gad
zooks is a highly technical I feel bad I shouldn't
have used that. You probably have that trade, Okay, No, no,
that I think I ripped that off Myron or something.
I think Myron used that a few times. Yes, I
would imagine, Well, this tradition Carrie carries on. We like that.

(13:33):
George Pickens, as you said, he played forty five snaps
Deontay Johnson, Pat friar Mouth and Chase Claypool in terms
of pass catchers were the only ones that had more
snaps than him. Well, again, I think this is yeah.
I think this young man is gonna be able to
blossom as a season unfolds here. He's going to be something.
At some point in time. They're gonna cut him loose,

(13:55):
no question. We saw it in training camp, we saw
it in the preseason. So yeah, if you you gotta
do it, as Mike says, you do it on the
grass before you do it in the stadium. And once
you get over the initial culture shock of getting into
the NFL and and actually participating in these high end games. Um,
you get over that sort of thing, and I think
his natural talent and hard work he's put in is

(14:16):
gonna come together and he's gonna be productive. It is
definitely a very interesting group of wide receivers that the
Steelers have. Different heights, weights, type, shiftiness. It just seems
to be a lot different than what we have previously
seen in terms of that group. It is. I mean,
you know, it's funny because you get the long, tall,
all the guys you've got like uh, George Pickens. You've

(14:37):
got Chase Claypool is another big body. Miles Boy can
their big bodies? Then you've got to stop and go guys.
The gunner of Schefsky Okay, Okay, sorry, Gunner, I'm trying
to get it right. Man. You know, I I do
suffer from ramnesia a little bit, you know, And you'll
find out about that when you get my age. A
matter of fact, Gunner, don't mock me. I'm the face

(14:58):
of your future, buddy. In terms of injuries, I know, guys,
we had mentioned t J. Watt. Coach Tomlin has his
press conference on Tuesday at noon. Maybe we'll get some
sort of update, as you said, Billy, maybe not. It
might be, you know, the participation will be our guide,
or we're still waiting to see what's coming from the doctors. Obviously.

(15:19):
Nagy Harris also not able to finish the game, dealing
with a foot injury. Some national reports made it sound
like he might be able to go against the Patriots
on Sunday, so fingers crossed for that one. And then
Levi Wallace dealt with an ankle injury. He was not
able to finish the game. Robert Spillane with an eye injury,
and then Mason Cole who hurt his ankle, was able
to come back in So hopefully, you know, practice report

(15:42):
comes out on Wednesday. Maybe that's when we'll learn a
little bit more. Well, we got tom on Tuesday tomorrow.
That's going to be right after in the locker room
with Starks Shameless plus Shameless plug with myself and Max
and the Ninja's uh net follows right on the heels
of the locker room, and then we'll find doubt, you know,
basically what's going At least you have an idea, well,

(16:04):
at least Tomlin talks about injuries. There's a college coach
and Town refuses to he just you asked him about
an injury, is the next question. Yeah, that's that's just
the different philosophy. But now there's a different platform to
the leg demands to deal with injuries publicly, and that's
the big difference between the pro game and the college game.

(16:25):
All Right, we have much more to talk about here
on the point after you're listening to w d V.
When we return, we'll talk about the Steelers coordinators and
quarterback Mitch Robinsky. Back to the point after brought to
you by Parks Casino on dv E. It was enough.
We want to know just like special teams in defense,
we win together, we lose together. Um. I'll comb through

(16:48):
it from an analysis standpoint on Tuesday's like I always do.
He did not blink, Um made the necessary plays in
the weighty moments. Um. I'm appreciative of his efforts. Welcome
back to the point after everybody a Missy Matthews with
Bill hill Grove and Craig Wiffley. That was Steelers head
coach Mike Tomlin talking about the Steelers offense and new
quarterback Mitch Trabinsky. This segment is brought to you by

(17:11):
the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and John's Appliance. For
every field goal we kicked the season, Don's Appliance will
donate one thousand dollars to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
That is five thousand meals each time. Thank you to
Don's Appliance. You can donate to by texting goals to
five zero one five five and Billy. Mitch Trabinsky first

(17:34):
real game in the black and Goal, What did you
make of his performance and demeanor? I thought he did
what he had to do to not lose the game,
and I think quarterbacks have to do that, you know,
I really believe that quarterbacks, uh, you know, and we've
seen examples of quarterbacks who weren't all that great win
super Bowls. Should I say Trent dilfor Should I follow

(17:57):
with Chris Simms? Uh? I don't know that Eli Manning
is the cats me out, But he won a Super
Bowl because he didn't beat himself. And I think that's
what you gotta do as a quarterback, don't lose the game.
And would would Vegas have given you big odds that
at the end of the day yesterday he would have
a better pass efficiency rating than Joe Burrow. Well, the

(18:21):
defense had not to say about that, don't get me wrong.
But still, he didn't beat himself. And you know, okay,
he did engineer the winning field goal drive in overtime,
but that defense needed badly to rest late in the game.
Almost at the end of the third quarter, Steelers started
out at their twenty five yard line and they punted

(18:41):
at from their own thirty eight, so that's not a
lot of yardage, but he ate up four minutes and
twenty seconds, which gave the defense that kind of arrest,
which at that point in the game, late third quarter,
very very necessary. So you know, he didn't beat himself. No,
I agree totally with you, Bill. I mean, here's the
thing I look at. I try to think and always

(19:03):
try to draw off my own experiences and everything. And
I remember being in several games even there with the backup,
and and if the game goes on long and not
much is happening offensively, you start to give the side
eye to the guy, you know what I mean, like,
come on, we gotta pull something together here. But you
know I didn't. I didn't get that feeling that any
of that was happening with Mitch. Mitch has established himself

(19:26):
as a leader type guy for whatever reason. However, because
I've not even met the man yet, but and I'm
looking forward to it. Um he is really um played
position himself as a strong leader in that locker room,
and he's, uh, you know, it's obvious that the guys
reacted positively positively to him, you know, by rallying the

(19:49):
forces when you got fifty six seconds left and being
able to make some places. And that's the only gonna
solidify the fact that when you're in the huddle of
the guy and you believe that that guy can get
it done. Regardless of how bad things have going, things
can turn around quickly. And I really kudos to him
and the guys in the huddle. They stayed together. They

(20:10):
didn't fractionalize, There was no side eyes, there was no
complaining and anything like that. He stayed with it. He
got the job done is Mike calls it in the
weighty moments, and that's only going to solidify and give
him more of that credibility in the locker room. He
he did what he needed to do and he didn't
hurt himself, like you said, Billy, and he was the
best dress player on the first bote there you go

(20:33):
without question. Yes, but there's a lot to that and
I think I did say Chris Simms, I met Phil Simms.
But the point is, don't beat yourself, don't take your
team down with you. Function and that's what he did.
He functioned well. We talked about on our earlier show
off the free play to Friar Muth where he found
him down the middle. You know that really saved the

(20:54):
Steelers in terms of being able to get where they
needed to go. Uh and just having that awareness and
Friar Muth even said in the locker room, you know,
I knew that he's one of those guys that could
could get me the ball, who has that demeanor. There
was no like raw ross speech. According to Deontay Johnson,
it was like, all right, let's go, everybody in the huddle,
we're going to do this thing, not like hey, we

(21:15):
have to do this and putting pressure on themselves. Um,
but I think, you know, for a guy that came
here in March, who's named a team captain, I know,
the quarterback position sometimes carries maybe that quote unquote position.
But he's new to a lot of people. And that's
why yesterday, you know, uh, Mitch and a bunch of
people said that coach Tomlin gave all of the new players,

(21:35):
the ones who did not understand that the standard is
the standard prior to yesterday, they got the game balls
just to say, hey, thanks for putting your hand in
the pile and competing with us and being able to,
you know, come home to Pittsburgh with a win. That's cool.
I didn't even realize that every new guy, every new guy,
every new guy, man, that's great shoes. That's well, they

(21:57):
got those before they that tons better you know that
that that was I didn't understand what they called air
force air force I'm not a Yeah, I don't wear sneakers.
What do you got on your feet? Then? Uh, they're
not sneakers, they're okay, therapeutics. I'm not that advanced. We

(22:20):
don't have sneaker heads over here. Yeah, I know I'm
wearing sneakers and I don't even know the name of them,
but you know what they work? And uh, I just
i'd never heard of air force ones. Was it called? Yeah,
players wear them a lot. Okay, I gotta believe that
the past to Friar Muth down the middle of the
field was not the play that he intended to run.

(22:44):
But once he got the free play, what's why do
we talk in the ten or? You know? Because I
think it was who moved who was in the in
the neutral zone? Was it Hubbard? I think so, yeah,
it was yeah, you know, and that's to me, that's savvy.
Wait a minute, no, okay, I got a free play,

(23:05):
I'm gonna go somewhere else. Well, you know what he is.
I think if I recall reading a stat Mitch is
four and oh against AFC North opponents. I didn't see that. Yeah,
I think so if I if I pulled that one out, man,
that's well, that's a victory. Man. Double check it as
we continue our discussion here, just you know, give you

(23:27):
that's not a bad one. Here. Wait, actually, I have
Mitch Trabisky rate here. She's fast. I don't have it here.
I don't have it here. But I know that you're
I remember seeing something like that. I don't want to
confirm that that's exactly it, but we'll get we'll get
to the bottom. And I didn't think it was just
an aberration of like one of crushed synapses, like firing

(23:47):
all of a sudden. I'm not sure about this stat,
but I saw it on TV today that feather in
the cap of the defense. Joe Burrow had one of
the worst games between interceptions and sacks in the modern era.
He was in the top three. I guess, well, one
of the beautiful standing games opening games. Here's here's one
of the beautiful stats. I mean, since we were tossing

(24:08):
stats around, the Steelers are fifty three and oh what
they have four takeaways and four sacks. At least four
takeaways four sacks or fifty three and oh how about that?
One that is baby. And also I just you know,
when I do my stats every week, I just love
to put plus five on the turnover takeaway. That's that's
a nice one. Hopefully you see that more this season. Well,

(24:31):
some teams work a month to get that. You know, Um, well,
if what did you learn about Matt Canada and his
offense and maybe the glimpse of what we saw yesterday
and what more could possibly be coming our way in
the near future. Well, I think one of the things
that we're gonna look as a little more under center
the possibility of going to some play action. We've got
some screens. We had a tight end screen that you know,

(24:53):
the six twelve went out and you talk about bumbling, stumbling,
rumbling moving down the sidelines. I said to him when
I saw him on the plane and go, you couldn't
make The last guy I missed was the von Bell.
I think you let von Bell take it. You haven't
scored a touchdown you It was right there, right there,
And uh, you know, of course I'm a big van Zach.
I mean the guy I think he's just really done

(25:15):
a great job of remodeling himself and you know, build
himself into being a player like like he is, and
him and uh Friar moved together. I think that it's
a great duel. But I really like the idea of
the fact that we're gonna take advantage of the fact
that Mitch's an excellent athlete and can run. He's got
some wheels. You're gonna change the launch points, You're gonna

(25:35):
start to move him, you know, with the sprint outs
and um you know, the ability that he can climb
the pocket. One of the most what I'm intrigued about
is the ability for him to drop back and start
climbing the pocket north and south and have somebody flashed
over the middle, because that really puts the defense in
the conundrum. It's a it's a tough thing to do.

(25:58):
And of course the play actions and the other things
that he's capable of doing, but certainly the mobility of
Mitch Drabinski is a big plus for him, and I
think that's something that Matt Cannon's gonna take advantage. And
if you catch him in a zone that crossing route,
late U, they're standing still, they're covering, covering an area
and if that guy whizz us by his face, that

(26:19):
goal line is not that far away. No, it's not.
There was a couple with Jamaar Chase that had me
like a little flicker in my kicker there that I
did some research. I looked up your Mitch Drabinsky star.
You are correct. Four Oh he beat the Ravens, the Bengals,
and the Browns in two thousand seventeen with the with

(26:41):
the Bears. And then obviously we know what happened yesterday,
Sweet Marie. Things like this don't happen very often. But yes,
I was correct in the stat We'll take it. Uh.
We got to talk some mold line, so give us
the lowdown. Did you have a chance to go back
and watch anything watch the ton of it? Yes? And
I'll say this, Uh, kudos Danny more War. You know,
Danny Moore was my meat eat or match up with

(27:04):
Trey Hendrickson, who's like a baby face killer over there. Uh.
Trey Hendrickson came over from the Saints. He posted a
thirteen and a half sack year while it comes over
the In his first one with the Bengals, he goes
fourteen and goes Pro Bowl. This guy, I've watched so
athletic six four two D and seventy pounds. Um got
a great pass rush, you know, with the one arm stab,

(27:25):
with two armed stab, bull rush with uh you know,
the uppercut, slap trapping uppercut, catching the edge, very quick
up the field, so athletic that he can bull rush
a three pound guy sitting at offensive tackle and yet
run down the sideline with a running back locked in
man coverage one on one on a wheel route. I
was just amazed at them by the way the past

(27:47):
was incomplete, such was the coverage. It was good, good job.
And yet here Danny who has has had a little
bit of you know, a little Kurf fluffle with some
of his technique in the preseason, and it said, you know,
people have talked about it, but he came out played hard.
I mean, if you take a look at the stat
line of training head and ricks, and he's got like
three or four tackles one quarterback hit. I mean just

(28:07):
one time he you know, got near Mitch Drabinsky there.
I think that was an excellent job. Chooks a core
for nice job again, showing again that he was worth
the money the Steelers signed him for. Mason Cole did
a good job of of manning up and and you know,
you got dwinked with the ankle. You got j. C.
Hessener came in. He was just one floater of a snap,

(28:29):
uh you know away from you know, he just had
that one floater. Otherwise everything was good with him. And
then you got the two big guards, Kevin Dotson and
James Daniels, and they did some good work on the inside.
As a matter of fact, on a couple of those
counter traps, if you look at it closely, man, you're
one block, one arm reached something from springing some big ones.

(28:52):
It was there. It was there a couple of times.
And I look for this line, keep going, keep working,
keep uh you know, chop wood and carrying the water
and so forth, that sort of thing. Because I think
this line is going to keep developing and keep developing.
I think you give it a good four four weeks
or so, and I think we got something good. And
think about this one sack, five quarterback hits, that's all

(29:14):
they had. And think of what we had, seven sacks
and eleven quarterbacks. Yeah, thank you. Sticking with the offense though,
um obviously we don't know the status of Naji Harris.
Just yeah, for Sunday against the Patriots, but Jalen Warren
saw some time before Naji got hurt. What did you
make it was twenty three snaps for him yesterday? You know,

(29:37):
I like, I love the kid's effort. This kid is
just um, he just lets it rip, you know. And
I I know that again having not interacted personally with
him yet and uh not talked to Mike about it,
but it says something when you go with the young
man over a veteran like Benny in this situation, when
after Naji came out and so, and it's not too

(29:59):
at all, um and not say anything poor Bob Benny,
because this is just the way that they came out
of training camp. And you know that Jalen was the
next guy up. Uh. I love the way he looks,
and I love the way he stood up a couple
of rushing linebackers. Yeah you know, I picked it up bang,
all of a sudden, their momentum stopped immediately. He'll put

(30:20):
his eyebrows right in your chest, man. I mean, you know,
he don't blink. He may get driven back some, he
may get you know, his his key star dusted a
little bit, you know, getting knocked out. But there's no
there's no backup in him as far as on his
own free will, he's gonna come up and he's gonna
put his grill and your grill. All right, we'll go
around the rest of the a f C North see

(30:41):
what everyone else did yesterday. Also, let's talk about the
defense of coordinator Terrell Austin what he doubt up yesterday
from the sideline. When we return here on the point
after you're listening to w d V, back to the
point after brought t flight Parks Casino on d V
playing Joe Burrowing Company. You better get the balls so

(31:05):
they're not putting a lot. That's just the function of
how some of these half powered offices and top nights
quarterbacks are. You know, Thursday night, I'm watching. I don't
know if Alan Punnett you know. Um, that's just the
nature today's game. So you'd better be prepared to take
the ball away. Welcome back to the point after Ms. Matthews,
Bill Hillgrove and Craig Wolfley's Steeler's head coach Mike Tomling

(31:25):
giving some kudos to his Steelers defense yesterday for those
five takeaways, four interceptions, one fumble recovery and uh Kim
Hayward might want that one to be an interception if
if I had a guess, you know, the him and
teacher are those guys that like to know what the
stats are and you know, maybe call alias and have
some people do some of the behind the scene work. Well,
didn't Cam have an interception last year at one point

(31:47):
against the Giants? Remember, No, that was they opened the season.
Zach Banner got hurt that game. That was like week one.
I TH's it, that's it. He did have a big
man interception that was a legit. Not only that, it
was before he had a sack. So at one point
he had more interceptions than he had sacks. That's right, Uh, Cam,
you know, being the Chief Award winner, the reigning Chief

(32:09):
Award winner, I should say, spoke again in the locker
room today. It was open briefly before they had team
run and team meetings. Um, he was asked to, you know,
define especially the guys up front, and he said relentless.
He said, what more could you ask for? We started
with a sack and we ended with a sack. Exactly.
It's true. Oh it is, because well, yeah, and I

(32:31):
felt sorry, Well no, no, let me rephrase it. I
didn't feel sorry, sorry, just for a young guy making
his first start against Cam Hayward. Okay, I remember my
first start against Randy White from Dallas. It was a
preseason game, fortunately, but it was the third play of
the very first start of my career and uh, I

(32:53):
don't know, Randy just kind of disappeared. I remember turning
around looking is He's spiking Bratshaw into the ground, and
I'm thinking, Okay, this could be a real short starting
assignment by me, and I might not last too long.
And it's it's a difficult thing when you go out
there and you give up a sack and your the

(33:14):
first play. For me, it was the third play, first
pass rush man, and you stand there and you hear
the crowd going nuts, and then you know, I'm looking
at the old blue eyes Bratchaw, give me the side
I like, come back. It was. It was not a
pretty moment for the kidding out. This segment is brought
to you by clear View Federal Credit Union. For every
turn over the Black and Gold create in two thousand

(33:36):
and twenty two, clear View Federal Credit Union will donate
five dollars to the Light of Light of Riscue Rescue Mission.
Excuse me, clear View helping people to enjoy a better life.
Visit clear View f CU dot org slash touchdown. All right,
so talk to us about t A Wolf. What did
you see from him? He was down on the sidelines.

(33:57):
Brian Flores is going to be up in the booth,
and I thought that we saw some different things that
we've seen from the Steelers defense, even though some of
the components, some of the players are the same. Well,
they just moved people differently. I mean, they did a
little bit of the They had their dime, they had
their nickel, They rotated defensive lineman in and through, um
they did a good job of matchup. I thought Ta

(34:21):
was smart and his blitz and he didn't blitz much.
I mean they literally, if I recall correctly, it was
something like twenty pressures they got off of just a
four man rush. They didn't bring the house, didn't have to.
And I think that you know, you play a lot
of the too safety, you know, too high safety rather
than a single high and you know, uh, the guys

(34:43):
one guy dropping down to the box, they were able
to control the running attack as well as again, Joe
mixons a heck of a back but you know, I'll
give him three yards a carry, that's what he had. Well,
that's what he average. Yes, you know seven carries, you know,
eat it up and make him go the long you
know the Dick Laba. Make him go on long drives
and be able to because at some point somebody's gonna

(35:04):
screw up. And it just happened to be Joe Are
Joe Burrow that was screwing up. I can still hear
John Mitchell at St. Vincent saying to the defense, don't worry.
The longer they have the ball, the sooner the mistakes
gonna happen. There's a lot of truth that's coaching wisdom
from I'll tell you John Mitchell. If there was a

(35:24):
Hall of Fame for assistant coaches, he would be a
Hall of Famer, no doubt in my mind. And the
Steelers are lucky he's still around the team and helping
out in a different capacity. But it's good to see
sit with him in practice. At times. You will sit
down there a couple of guys, right, and I come
away and I'm like smart, I'm like staying at holiday
in or something I said with with Mitch, and I
just get smarter. Off am, I pulled up a stat

(35:47):
for you during the break. Here we go. The Steelers
are sixties six thirty six and four in the regular
season when facing a quarterback, a starting quarterback who was
drafted number one overall. I know there was the crazy
rookie one quarterback when Dilao is the defensive coordinator. But yeah,
for whatever reason, they just they know how to handle

(36:07):
those guys absolutely. You know, Uh, Terrell Austin's he's a
smart dude. Um, just talking to him, he's, uh, well
he's he's you know, he's forgotten more football than I
ever knew. I like talking to him about some of
the things he's doing. But when I love most is
his attitude. You know, I mean, he he projects that confidence.
He projects that confidence to the players. The players respond, Um,

(36:31):
there's a lot of things that you know, I think, Um,
you look at the way he maneuvers with his guys
and the job he's done. He and Brian Floors and
getting Devin Bush untracked and back on track doing stuff
like that. I can't say enough good things about them.
I think that they're going to be a good duo
here as we move along in advance. I think that

(36:53):
defensive effort yesterday had a Brian Flor's imprint on it.
I don't know that. It just seemed like you said
different you know, same people, but different way of doing things.
And that's the effect I think he's had. And plus
the players love them. And can I also say this
dead Tyson al what a joy to have him back.

(37:16):
You know, a couple of times he was just reckon
people on the inside and it was fun because watching
him run late to the pile. He's not a vert
to you know, auditioning on a little bit of bang,
bit of bang giving somebody the business. Well, you know,
I mean, it does happen, and you know, I just
totally respect his game. He and Cam together, although they're

(37:36):
of the older variety guys, um they are certainly um
so capable of just tearing things up on the inside.
It's fun to watch when you just go back to
last year and remember how early in the season Tyson
got hurt. You didn't have stuff on to it. It
just things started going downhill quickly in terms of being
able to do what they wanted to do with that front.

(37:58):
And no, Vince Williams right, but he has that mentality
we saw yesterday. Oh yes, you know who surprised me?
Do a little to Marvin Lee all got in and
got a few reps. How many reps do you get this?
That wouldn't be interesting because this young man is really
come on, I mean, he's really of them. That's that's

(38:19):
that's pretty darn good for the first time out, And
we haven't mentioned I think Devin Bush gave a good
account of himself. There's no doubt about that. Miles Jack
has really done something for that inside linebacker corps. I
don't know whether it's just him being there and kind
of like, okay, this is how it's done. You know,
you see it happening. He slashes to the ball, he

(38:39):
starts going downhill. All of a sudden we get Devin
starting to do some of the things that he was
doing Robert Splaine. He's just a splat monster, you know.
I mean it's fun to watch him play. Yeah, I'm
sure he's got deficiencies in his game like we all
do or we all did, um and so forth. But
well he's fun to just watch go. You know, he's

(39:00):
that's that's good stuff. Well, what else would you expect
from Johnny Latner's grandson. You don't remember Johnny Latner. No, No,
he was a Notre Dame guy Wonder three. He was
a Steelers number one pick. See, I was all messed
up there. That's what do you expect, man. I've had
several concussions, you know, hopefully not recently, Billy. I think

(39:23):
yesterday we also learned the importance of a long snapper
and one who practices daily, no question. Uh, Clark Harris
tour bicep. We didn't know it and we didn't pick
it up, and you know that's on us. But uh,
there were a couple of snaps there, especially on the
twenty nine yard or the high snap, and I remember
calling it that effect. It affected Evan McPherson, no question

(39:47):
about it. And of course on the extra point, the
velocity on that snap was not quite what Clark Harris
would given it. It turned up to be I think
backup tight end Wilcox. Wilcox. Yeah. And and and to that point,
by the way, we do have a couple of backup
snappers ourselves. Derek Tusca is no longer an active player, uh,

(40:10):
Derek Watt and or six ft twelve Zach Gentry. Yes. Wow,
A little Bertie told me that. Interesting, you know, I
remember my rookie year, Chuck told me to stay out after,
you know, snap up a training camp. You'll see if
you can do it. For Bradshaw was the backup Hunter.
So I've snapped a match. First one I rolled back,

(40:32):
the second one I zoomed fifteen feet over his head,
high school Harry, and then the third one was fifteen
ft to his right. And that what Juck said. Chuck
said me, I sure hope you can block better than
you can snap. So I'm take it in very quickly
before we have to end here. In terms of the
a f C North, the Ravens beat the Jets to

(40:52):
nine yesterday, and the Browns came out of the Baker
Bowl winners to twenty four over the Carolina Panthers, the
Steelers up coming opponent for their home opener on Sunday.
The Patriots lost to the Dolphins seven. And I know
this stat is right because it was plastered everywhere today
to a is four and oh against the Patriots as
a starting quarterback. Wow, that works. The Patriots have their

(41:16):
problems with the Dolphins. They do they do? Sure? All right? Well,
thanks so much, hopefully not the Steelers on Sunday. Thanks
for joining us here on the point after for Bill Hill,
Grove and Craig will flee. I'm miss Matthews and don't forget.
