Speaker 1 (00:14):
Well how about that?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
What a fun one to call it today for your Shirley,
Paul Allen and Pete Bursett, analysts for the Vikings Radio Network.
Minnesota wins twenty three to seventeen. We can nitpick, you know,
with keeping the forty nine ers in the game and
stuff like that. You know, NFL games are tough to win,
as you know, but I just left it today thinking
the two and zero Vikings kind of dominated these forty
(00:38):
nine ers.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Yeah, unfortunately, you know we didn't. We just didn't complete
a couple of drives that would have put us put
this game out of reach earlier for the San Francisco
forty nine Ers. And you know, you playing the forty
nine arguably the best team in the NFC, one of
if not the and you know you went out there
and did exactly what you wanted to do, especially execution
(00:59):
on the defensive side of the ball. By what they
did to this offense, they what they made Purdy become
and gave themselves the best chance to win. Paul, So,
I think a very impressive game overall. It just it
took a lot of It took a lot of combined
work from everyone to get this thing done and minus
(01:19):
the turnovers, Paul, This, yeah, right, this game would have
been a multi score victory.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Jordan Mason finished with one hundred yards. Okay, he's a
nice running back. Kyle Shanahan's running schemes might be second
to none in the NFL. But you know, there was
an a topic coming into this game. Pete talked about
it a lot on KFA in in the pregame show.
Where if you take the forty nine ers out of
their running game like the Vikings did last year Week
seven when they beat the Niners on Monday Night Football,
(01:46):
San Francisco threw it seventy percent of the time in
the second half. And it's not like Brock Perdy can't throw.
He can, but they it's all predicated off their run
and their window dressing they set up. So when you
lead these Niners and forced them to be pass happy,
you have a better chance to win. And today Brock
Perdy throw thirty six times. Pete, they ran twenty five.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Right, and it's a complete reversal. I mean we out
we out rushed him by forty four yards, Paul, And
I think the other key stat when you when you
look when you're looking at it, is just the average
per rush. We averaged six point one yards per rush.
They were only at four point one, so we out
gained him on the ground and then we obviously out
gained him in the air too as far as explosive
(02:28):
plays go. So you know, I just think we're built
the way we're built, Our scheme and everything really gives
the forty nine ers a hard time, right, We match
up very well against that team. And but the running
game again for the Vikings is kind of the sneaky
big topic. As you know, Aaron Jones make it more
(02:50):
big plays. He's given the opportunity of us to go
deep on second and short because knowing that you can
hand it off, it's an incomplete pass. You can hand
it off and get that get that first down off
the third downs. So offensive line I think is settled down,
Trent will you I mean, you know, you look at
Christian Dearisov giving up a sacked to Nick Bosa, But
outside of that, I thought they kept Donald pretty clean
(03:12):
right overall against a really good rushing front. So the
offensive line starting to, you know, starting to come together
a little bit. So we'll see and again I think
the highlight of the day for me, is Donald on
that drive late in the game that we needed kept
the ball moving without great point, Well, you know, without Jefferson,
without Hockinson, without Jefferson, without Addison. Yeah right, his three
(03:35):
best receivers are not on the field, but he was
able to keep that thing going. That's a right point
of Brandon Powell coming up big again like he has
in the pass So and Nailer.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
I mean, now we're gonna hear from Kevin O'Connell and
Sam Darnold coming up shortly on the Vikings postgame report.
I'm glad you said that because things were tenuous. It
was a one score game. It's third and nine. No Jefferson,
you know, and you got Sherfield senior over here, Mont
over there, Palell over there, nailing Nailer over there, Ty
Chandler's the tailback. And I'm like, wow, listen to these names.
(04:10):
Holy cow, first down the jail and Nailer.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
You know, like the third quarter of a preseason game
with the guys that are out there with the receivers
and so. But that big throw down the scene. And
again we talked about that before the game, that that's
been an issue. They hadn't attacked it yet they hadn't
shown it, they hadn't done but they pull it out
right at the right time. So yeah, it's really you
can argue about deciding to throw the football that early,
(04:34):
that after you run the ball, well, you give the
you throw an interception to Fred Warner. But that fumble
Aaron Jones had very unlikely, you know, very not like
him at all, But that that could have been a killer, big, right,
that could have been a killer because you had you
were three yards from just absolutely slamming a door on
this team, and then you gave him, You let it,
You gave him an inch and let him back in.
(04:55):
And you know, to their credit, the defense stepped up.
They let him score. You know, he gave up a score,
but it was a field goal. Yeah, right, so you
know he did a nice job, but just tightening it
up at the end when they needed to be in.
So we matched up, I think we matched up very
very well. Wasn't that this wasn't a lucky win. This
isn't this isn't the things just went our way today.
(05:16):
This was a good battle. Yeah, And I think the
Vikings stood toe to toe with and the.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Niners were down. Christian McCaffrey. Okay, cool, I mean we
ended up being down. Justin Jefferson, Aaron Jones left for
a series and change. Jordan Addison was scratched before the game.
Hawkinson hasn't even played this year, and the Vikings still
found a way to beat a tough San Francisco forty
nine ers team. And before we hear from Kevin O'Connell,
this team threw too. Okay, has three tiered balance where
(05:46):
the offensive scoring touchdowns. He had a ninety seven yard
touchdown pass today, Donald to Justin Jefferson. Those are longs
for both of them. Donald previous long was ninety two.
Jefferson's previous long was one twenty twenty against the Tennessee Titans.
The defense two consecutive games, you have five sacks, you
(06:07):
have ten sacks for two games. And special teams where
your kicker Will Reikers yet to miss. He hasn't missed
an extra point or a.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Field blocking punts too, right, you know what I'm saying.
So the you know, the turnover, the turnover battle kind
of even itself out. But we did have a block punt.
They went forward on fourth down early in early three times,
you know, twice on the same drive they were. They
were one of three on those third downs, fourth downs,
excuse me, on third down they were only they were
(06:36):
with twenty percent conversion rate two to ten. So defensively,
we're doing good things on third down. You're not going
to see a team every week, maybe because me, maybe
San Fran on the road in Detroit anywhere, that are
going to continue to go forward on fourth down, you know,
continue that pressure, but you know they they hung in there,
so continue to play great third down defense. Pall continue
(07:00):
to pressure the quarterback. Like we have ten sacks and
two games. I mean that's a huge, huge number. But
I love our depth at outside linebacker. I mean, you know,
you look at you look at Pat Jones and what
he's able to do, Dallas Turner what he's able to do,
and Van Ginkel being able to rush from the inside
and the outside, and you know, throw Blake Cashman in there. Yeah,
(07:21):
with the right the versatility on our defense has been
huge and will continue to be as as Flores will
tell you, he doesn't even really know what he has yet, right,
it takes three, you know, three four games into it
before you really understand the skill set of your players.
So they're still trying to figure they're trying to figure
each other out. Yes, sir, along the way, So there's
(07:42):
still there's still room on the upside, I guess, is
what I'm trying to say.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
By the way, Minnesota Vikings fans, here comes Kevin O'Connell,
the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, to talk about
your first place, Minnesota Vikings. Now we record this right
after the game. It makes no difference what the Bears
do against Houston this evening. Green Bay's one and one.
Tampa Bay did us as solid and beat the Lions
at Ford Field. So the Vikings are the only undefeated
team in the NFC North. Let's here Kevin O'Connell talk
(08:08):
about what happened today and also address Justin Jefferson who
left with injury.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Really proud of our football team.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
When you play the defending you know, NFC Conference champions,
and you know, you know you're signing up for a
twelve round heavyweight fight. We've talked a lot about things
like play style. You know, we've talked a lot about
how we want to play as a football team, regardless
of who we're playing. You know, I really want those
things to show up because we've made such an emphasis
(08:37):
on it. We've really built our team around it this year.
There's a lot of examples all over the tape, but
first and foremost, I want to start out and just
really think our crowd. I thought it was absolutely spectacular,
the energy from the jump when we needed them in
the third quarter, you know, converting some of those third
downs on that last long drive for the field goal.
You just kind of felt them willing us further and
(09:00):
further to go get this thing done. So I want
to compliment our crowd. Absolutely, love love, love our fans,
and I love this team. You guys, you know it
takes a result sometimes for people to see it, and
I understand that, and I'm very proud of this result today.
But it is just one game against a really good team.
But I'm most proud of what led into this football game.
(09:21):
There's a lot of individual performances we could talk about,
and I'm sure we will, but this was the epitome
of building a football team with a mindset through many
many months ago of what we wanted to play, like,
how we want to battle, and ultimately how we want
to come together and find a way to win a
football game. Thought our defense was fantastic. I thought our
old lineman guys that had been a little banged up
(09:43):
throughout the week battling, you know, rushing over what ended
up being six yards a carry six point one, just
phenomenal against that defensive front and couldn't stop without mentioning
Justin Jefferson and Sam Darnold. That's just would love to
have him for the whole football game. Got knocked out there.
(10:04):
I'll give you guys an update on him here in
a little bit, but I'd like to finish with Sam
Donald against his former team.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
You know, just.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
The amount of work that goes into that position on
your quarterback journey, when everybody decides that you cannot play.
We always believed in him and felt awesome to watch
him go do that thing. So I'm really proud of
Sam Darnald.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Kevin.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
When you're talking about play style all offseason, how much
is get in the back of your mind that you
see this team, you know.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
What's coming, you know they're on the schedule, and they
literally are. I give Kyle his whole coaching staff and
all those players so much credit for what they've been
able to sustain for so long, and they do it
by playing football the right way and imposing their will
on opponents. And this team is, that's a fantastic football
(10:59):
team if you want to go anywhere in this league,
especially in our conference. We know it's proven last year
and and a few before that that it's going to
be a team on your schedule. Whether whether they were
on it initially or not, you're gonna eventually have to
play them. We just got to get a chance the
first crack at him in week two. But I can't,
you know, say enough about what Kyle does, that organization,
(11:21):
John Lynch, they do everything the right way and and
you know you're signing up for everything you possibly can
give on a Sunday afternoon at US Bank Stadium when
you welcome welcome them to town. If you can't tell,
I'm absolutely exhausted. I know our team is, that's what
this is all about. But there's I'm so I love
this football team already just because of it might seem early,
(11:44):
but there's so much that went into this up until
you know today's performance.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
Have no last drive by Sam No justin.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
No John ring Yep, yep, he's you know, playing quarterback
and playing it at a really high level, some huge
third down conversions. You know, we were able to kind
of piece together some plays there kind of a lot
of guys taking reps.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
I want to highlight Keena.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
McCardell and that receiver group because we're already down Jordan.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
We're already down TJ.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Plays are built with number eighteen, you know, as a
focal point. We got a lot of double coverage today
on him, and he was still able to have his impact.
But then when he goes down, there's so many moving
it's musical chairs. I rely on those guys in that
moment to try to piece together some plays on the
fly there, and I thought that was only for a
field goal, but I thought it was our biggest drive
(12:32):
of the day for sure. Update on Jemeral I can, Yeah,
So it was a quad contusion, you know. I think
Fred Warner might have went flying in to make a
play like he does a lot, and Justin was, I
think working in the run game on the backside, and
you know, just kind of got a you know, not
a intentional but just kind of got a little leg
(12:52):
to leg combat, you know, contact on that. So it's
pretty sore, but he's already up and moving and We'll
just treat that thing and hopeful he'll be day to
day and we'll see how his uh, you know status
looks for next week. That's more impressive, Yeah, Dallas Turner.
I'll just you know, just to update late there, you.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Know, felt a little thing and his in his knee.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
We think it, we'll have to evaluate it, but more
than likely not going to be something I don't think
will be long term.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
But always careful to you know, over analyze. You guys
know this.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
I'm certainly not a doctor, so I'm just going off
of the updates quickly there. But it did happen late,
but we'll keep you guys updated throughout the week.
Speaker 7 (13:30):
Take through the two big throws I only private more
the long touchdown to Jefferson.
Speaker 8 (13:35):
Also the back shoulder down.
Speaker 7 (13:37):
The middle to Yeah, which is more impressive to you
as a quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
The ninety seven yard was one of the pretty throws
I've seen.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Just something that it actually goes back to a look
we ran on them last year, similar kind of presentation,
similar everything that one's been in the hopper for a
little bit and did not know I would call it
backed up, you know, with our feet and the paint
like that great protection in that moment, elite execution by
both Speedy. I think Speedy would have been a long
(14:06):
hit as well, depending on who Sam chose, and he
chose the right one, launching that thing as pretty as
a throw as I've seen, especially in those circumstances, and
then Speedy's play style finished to go get.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
The block, to get justin in the end zone.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
So many, so many examples of just really really awesome
stuff by our guys. And then the other throw, I'm
glad you asked about that. That's you know, that's a
throw that a quarterback makes, and if he doesn't make
that one, don't know where that ball is going. We
were kind of letting Speedy take the middle on that thing.
He's got to read coverage and presents itself and Sam
put it in the only place she could.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
That is big time quarterback play.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
For all those folks out there that want some examples
of it, I think we got two weeks of some
pretty tangible examples of some quarterback play from Zam Darnold.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
I'm really proud of them.
Speaker 9 (14:54):
Kevin, with that ninety seven yard place.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
In the air, what are you thinking, man?
Speaker 4 (14:59):
It seemed like it was in the air forever, So
you're just hoping, you know, once I saw the look
pre snap. I'm not a big throw my hands up
in the air when the ball goes up if I
think I have something, But I was pretty darn close
on that one, just knowing we got the look, the
great execution, great protection, and just you know, finding Justin
like that in a moment where we really need a
(15:21):
play to kind of reset reset the whole game. And
I thought the fact that we were able to get
the lead and then not give it back was real,
real credit to our guys.
Speaker 6 (15:32):
How important is Justin's ability to finish there, doesn't get
tackle on the thirty five, doesn't get pushed out at
the five.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
Yeah, I mean I think it's over four hundred reception
six thousand yards now, tied for the fastest I think
ever to do it. Justin Jefferson is an amazing football player,
but he's an even larger competitor. And I always know
I can see the look in his eye. I always
know when it's you know, it's go time and he
(16:00):
sees coverage. I know there's a lot of great players
in this league, but without Jordan and TJ. Right now,
Justin's going to see a healthy amount of defenders around him,
especially on those weighty downs. Almost had Speedy for a
touchdown there on the third down early in the game,
based upon how they had the double on Justin, and
we're just a little you know, maybe a little late,
(16:22):
maybe a little soft with the throw. But there's just
so many times and that's where I want to credit
Sam because I don't you can't really prepare a guy
for coverages sometimes that you see, we didn't, you know,
we anticipated it. It's not something that they've shown a
lot of, but I always kind of know in my
back pocket that we're going to see the Justin Jefferson
coverages and really going on, you know, two years and
two games now, it's been something that we've all grown
(16:44):
kind of working through and like I said, just the
execution by Jets alone is fantastic and so fortunate to
coach him Kevin.
Speaker 8 (16:53):
The end of the last driver of the first half,
Sam just had the interception and then you just being
aggressive and still going after there is just another sign
of the trust that you have that yeah, just kind
of get ready.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Yeah, and we wanted to make sure that they didn't
touch it again. So we kind of huddled there in
the middle and kind of I was hoping for three
on the drive if we could get it, and knowing
we were getting the ball coming out of half, and
we didn't do and we went three and out to
start the half. Kind of a weird intentional grounding there
on the second down, but I just thought that was
a big example of Sam just one play at a time.
You know, he threw an interception, tried to force it
(17:26):
over the best linebacker in football who sometimes can look
like he's seven feet tall out there, might have had
jets on the backside, but it'll be a great learning
example of just quarterback play. You know, there's nothing wrong
with you know, forcing yourself to say no sometimes on
a look where it wasn't the intended look, and maybe
we got to progress and just put the ball in play.
(17:47):
Loved our screen execution with the chance to put the
game away. And Aaron Jones is right behind CJ. Hamm
is somebody who I totally trust with the football in
his hands, and he's just getting sniffing the goal line
right there. And who was again, Fred Warner, you know,
popping that play out when you're an All Pro you're
gonna be making plays all over the field, and he
certainly did that to help keep them in the game
when we had a chance to maybe stretch that lead
(18:09):
a little more.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
Kevin, when you're taking that shot on the ninety there
from your own end zone, like you mentioned, what goes
into that is a play caller saying, I have a
look here, but when I'm this backed up, do I
still go to the same Yeah, there's some.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
Self talk that goes into that.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
Ben, There's definitely some self talk of understanding it's the
momentum of the opportunity is there for both teams when
your heels are in the paint like that, not even
you know, snapping the ball, and really I think we're
what three three yard line, So you're relying on a
lot of people, a lot of time on time on
task to to trust eleven guys to go execute kind
(18:44):
of a designer kind of play like that, just huge,
huge play for our team.
Speaker 10 (18:52):
Pat Jones comes into the season as maybe your third
or fourth outside linebacker. I mean, what, he's got four
sacks in two weeks.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
What does that say about him?
Speaker 4 (19:00):
And then just the depth of Yeah, I think the
depth of that room Mike Pett and coaching those guys
up with Amarja.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Flow understands what he's got.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
I mean, Van gink Will almost ended the game on
another one, just kind of sniffing out, you know, what
their what their answer might be to the pressure look
down there in the red zone. And and you know,
every single guy in that room I look at as
a guy that can start and play every snap if
we needed him to.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
We just have the luxury Choase put together a roster.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
We got a bunch of those guys that can all play,
and we're really using those guys, and I want to
credit Flow for.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
How he's using them. Cash had a huge game.
Speaker 4 (19:36):
Green Dot and us Ip was physical all day long,
and that's a tough outfit to defend, you.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Know, for four quarters.
Speaker 4 (19:42):
And you know, I know we had seven point five
yards per play offensively, but we still only had fifty
four you know, plays either short field. When we convert
that interception into the touchdown, it's a one play drive
and then you know, the block punt, we're right back
on the field and and find a way to get
some when's there. So those guys have been on the
(20:02):
field for a little bit more snaps than i'd like.
We got to continue to grow from a ball possession standpoint,
but that's probably the hardest team in the league to
do that with. But our goal coming in the game
was to break even a better on the turnover margin.
I think we're now nineteen to zero in the regular season.
When we do that, that shows you it can be
a winning formula when you pair that with the what
(20:23):
we want our play style to look like.
Speaker 8 (20:25):
Did you have a good look.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
At the interception that kind of pimballed all around?
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Yeah? I did, you know.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
I got a good look at that fumbled punt too.
I saw that ball all over the place as well.
That's what good football teams. Two good football teams. I
told our team last night. I think we're a really
good football team. And although others might be talking about
us potentially and whatever that means, you can tell a
lot of jokes about potential versus reality. I know that,
but this football team is not a joke. I expect
(20:51):
our team to continue to prepare the same way. I
expect us to go out there and systematically build game
plans and execute them and in the end.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Compete our tails off.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
Compete our tails off every single week with those principles
that we've built this team around, and it's only gonna
get harder. The journey's gonna get difficult. We're gonna be
punching the mouth a lot along the way. We got
to be ready to overcome adversity. But there's absolutely no
group that I would rather do that with than the
coaches and players in that locker room.
Speaker 8 (21:19):
What did you think you were getting from Cashman when
you sign him then offseason? And what what are you
seeing in the reality, because he seems like he's all.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Over the place.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Yeah, great, you know, athleticism, burst, speed, flies around, instinctive,
good cover player, good tackler, and what we've really expected
coming in and what he's confirmed is great communicator.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
That is not an easy job. In fact, both of
our green.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
Dots on offense with Sam and cash on defense, flow
and I.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
We're doing a lot of things.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
There's a lot of you know things where we're checking
things or getting to different personnel groupings offense, defense. The
communication I thought was elite to go along with the
elite effort by our crowd today to make it extra
difficult on those guys and and you know, we want
to play well at home, and we've got a tough
home schedule. But to have our defense humming and playing
like that and then piece it together with how we
(22:06):
want to play offensively, really really good, really good start
here at US Bank Stadium.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
All right, coach, the Minnesota Vikings begin two to zero
for the first time since twenty sixteen. And how about this,
because you were in the league in the mid nineties
and you played against the Niners, the San Francisco forty
nine ers with a bunch of good teams for like
the last fifty years that they haven't won in Minnesota
since nineteen ninety two. They lost eight consecutive in this state.
(22:31):
Amp Lee had two touchdowns back in ninety two when
they beat him at the Metrodome, and they didn't beat
him today either. And back to the defense for a second.
Cashman Eden Prairie native, Eden Prairie, Minnesota go crazy, finishes
with thirteen tackles, he had a sack. He also had
three passes defense. How about that on the old Tampa
(22:51):
too drop.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Oh yeah, no question about. They're doing such a good job.
Mattelis coming up with an interception today, So good off
that Cashman tip right, Yeah, So some great great team defense,
and that I think if anything stands out between Ben
Ginkel and Cashman, those guys being able to drop and
cover in the middle of the field. They do such
(23:13):
a good job. They have such good awareness. It's making
it harder for teams to really attack us in the middle.
So it's an area that you know that has improved,
needs to continue improve. I think our defensive backs have
to figure out that when that clock goes off in
their head and the quarterback is scrambling to just go
to their coverage, right, he's got to go to Byron Murphy.
(23:35):
I'll never I won't forget last year, but against Jamis
Winston and he rolled out, stopped and threw a ball
sixty yards of the opposite to the opposite corner of
the end zone to a wide open receivers.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Right.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
So they've they've got to learn to, you know, this
play sticky coverage once you get to a certain point.
But again, Paul, these are all things that the defense
can improve upon. Very very exciting. You know, it's good
to have Jonah Williams back. He got a ton of
snaps today, giving you depth at the interior defensive line
because those big guys that was that was a long
day for them.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Right before we hear from Sam the man on the fan,
Sam Darnold, ty Chandler deserves some shoan. Ten carries eighty
two yards Passadena City College. Math indicates that's eight point
two yards per run, and last week he caught three
passes at MetLife Stadium for twenty five yards. Old Chai
Chandler's coming through in a pinch.
Speaker 1 (24:26):
I think the best thing for ty Chandler has been
Aaron Jones, not just and it's hard to you won't
know yet to ask him this question. Is it him
watching Aaron Jones go about his business or are we
changing kind of our running game a little bit? But
you see a much more patient ty Chandler right taking
the snap, letting things develop. He's even getting outside breaking
(24:48):
contain on a couple of plays. He's really really improved.
And you mentioned, you know, he had a couple drops
in the preseason, but he worked on it since and
last week, like you said, had a couple of really
big receptions, especially backed up for the first down. So
Aaron Jones is making ty Chandler, I think, a better
running back the more we can depend on him, And
we know in the long haul. The more snaps that
(25:10):
he can take off of Aaron Jones, the better, because
you need a fresh Aaron Jones if you're gonna make
it in the Pro postseason. But that running back room
I think is playing at a very very high level.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Here comes Sam the man on the fans. Sam Darnold,
Minnesota Vikings quarterback. Seventeen of twenty six, two sixty eight,
two touchdowns and a pick, had a passer rating of
one nine to one, and we saw the athletic ability
Sam has two He ran five times for thirty four
yards and a couple of them were super key, including
an eighteen yard gallop for a first down. You're Sam Darnold.
Speaker 7 (25:41):
First off, Obviously, a great team win. I thought defense
put their butts off today. Special teams as well. Getting
that block pump was huge. And then you know, obviously
a great team in Sam fran to be able to
come out here as a team and fight the way
that we did, and that that last drive as well,
the offensive line doing their thing running the ball, you know,
late in the third quarter, early in the fourth, and
(26:03):
then you know, just guys stepping up. I think that
was huge for us today. Obviously, Jets goes down, Aaron
Jones goes out on that last drive, and you had
Speedy Jalen Naylor, you know, stepping up for us, and
then Ty Chandler coming up huge for us too at
the end, running the rock and taking care of the football.
(26:24):
So great team win and I'm really proud of the
guys in there.
Speaker 10 (26:28):
Sam takes through the scene pass to Naylor there and
you threw a back shoulder.
Speaker 8 (26:32):
You're just throwing it to the spot that only he
can get it.
Speaker 7 (26:35):
Yeah, you know, just seeing the guy who was guarding
him up up you know, upfield shoulder a little bit,
felt like I had space on the back shoulder to
be able.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
To throw it.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
And you know those most of those throws you throw
over the top of the defender. And for Speedy and
I to be on the same page with that and
him expecting that, not necessarily expecting the back shoulder, but
reacting the way that he did, was was huge to
take us through the law.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
Touching that pass.
Speaker 7 (27:03):
Yeah, obviously you know, getting a similar coverage that we
were looking for. And you know, obviously I think I
had Speedy as well on the high cross and then
but just trust in Jets man to obviously beat his man,
but also beat the safety and just tried to put
(27:24):
it out there for him and obviously he got it
and did the rest. You know, he's open or you're
getting out there, or he's the only one that can
catch her, like when it left her hand.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
Did you have to shot?
Speaker 3 (27:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (27:34):
Absolutely, you know, absolutely, I knew I had to shot.
And again, you know, just the offensive line, the way
that they battled all day, that's a really tough front
up there, and uh, just the time that they allowed
not only on that play, but you know throughout the
entire game, was was huge.
Speaker 9 (27:51):
After he makes that catch, what are you seeing like
from your vantage point as he tries to get to
the end.
Speaker 7 (27:56):
Zone, I'm just watching him run around. That was pretty
mu shit, And you know I was ready to you know,
get the next play, you know, call the next play.
And then I saw him kind of cross back across
the field and you know noticed he had a lot
of juice to be able to you know, get away
from those defenders once he cut back across the field.
And from from when he cut back, that's when I
(28:19):
kind of knew that we were going to score on
that play. And that's one of those plays too. That's
really fun to be able to celebrate with the big
guys while you're while you're back there just watching them
run around sans.
Speaker 6 (28:28):
Just how impressive is that determination to like not go
down at the thirty five or even get pulled down
inside the tent to make sure that ends.
Speaker 7 (28:38):
Yeah, I mean, you know, it was obviously a really
really good play. And again, like a lot of guys,
I feel like, you know, their legs would kind of
give out, you know, when you get and you start
to get into their or our side of the field,
I guess. And then for him to be able to
cut back and still, like I said, have enough juice
to to pull away from those guys was was impressive.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
Probably not too many quarterbacks are throwing deep five yards
and a ten zone against the fourteen nine ers.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Just talk about the aggressive call in that situation.
Speaker 7 (29:09):
Yeah, you know, it's a great call obviously, with them
expecting some type of run play or quick throw to
be able to like you mentioned, you know, you're you're
backed up and you want to Sometimes teams play conservative,
and you know we we did that last week, you know,
backed up, you know, throwing the ball in the flat
to to tie, you know, playing it a little bit
(29:31):
more conservative. But yeah, for for Ko to to be
able to call that play and the guys whatever in
the booth or the offensive staff to be able to
see that and and call it, you know, it shows
it shows uh, you know, just the the trust they
have in.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Me SAMs a swinger.
Speaker 6 (29:49):
In the first half, you had the interception, they come
back and score, but to get points there at the
end of the first half, how important was that that bounced
back and kind of stem that tide there?
Speaker 3 (29:56):
That was huge.
Speaker 7 (29:57):
I mean, you know, I saw it firsthand the entire
year last year. You know how much momentum that team
on the other side, you know, the Niners get when
they score at the end of the half, and then
you know, we were getting the ball in the second half.
But you know that just momentum can kind of carry
you know, that team to a win most.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Of the time.
Speaker 7 (30:16):
And for us to be able to get a good
two minute drive there at the end of the half
was a big time for us on.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
The long as what goes into the decision to go
along as opposed to Naylor's there.
Speaker 7 (30:26):
Just seeing the safety's location, that's the biggest thing for me.
And because I know that, you know Jets is going
to be his man.
Speaker 8 (30:34):
Sam, what does it mean to you that Kevin puts
that trust in you in that fate whether it was
the ninety seven or even at the end of the
first half, You guys could have been conservative come with
the ball coming out of the second half, and you
you're being aggressive and going for it. I mean, he
clearly trusts you to make the right decisions there. What
does that mean at the stage of your career to
have that coach believe it in you?
Speaker 3 (30:53):
Yeah, it's huge.
Speaker 7 (30:53):
I mean we practiced it all the time, you know,
no t is in training camp, and to be able
to go out there and just execute a really good
two minute at the end of the half was really
good for our team.
Speaker 9 (31:02):
Sam.
Speaker 6 (31:02):
What do you think you guys proved today to night?
Speaker 7 (31:07):
You know, I don't I don't get into narratives like that.
I think the biggest thing for us is just continuing
to take it one day at a time and we'll keep,
you know, stacking really really good days on top of
good days, and we'll see where we go from there.
Speaker 8 (31:20):
The one the Warner got you you just make a
good play there.
Speaker 7 (31:22):
You left Fred got me on. Yeah, he made a
good play. I think I could be a little bit
safer with the football in that situation.
Speaker 9 (31:30):
Sam, you just mentioned the earlier the trust that it
takes for kept to make that play call when you
were Indian zone of the ninety seven yard on your touchdown.
But what does it do for you or does it
feel like to know your coaches the confidntinue to make
that play called.
Speaker 7 (31:44):
Yeah, you know, just again, we've we've put in the
time to be able to, you know, have the confidence
not only in me the coaching staff, but everyone in
that organization. In our organization has trust and confidence in everybody.
We've been building it since April and you know, we're
just we're excited to be able to you know, watch
the tape and move on to next week.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
So Nick, be a blow with Justin's not in there
and you need just crucial drive to get points after
they score.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
You're down here, you have no.
Speaker 6 (32:11):
Addison, no Howkins, What are you telling those guys in
the huddle when you have a four team play drive?
Speaker 7 (32:15):
Yeah, I mean you know this, This might suck for
you guys to hear this, but I don't say anything.
Speaker 3 (32:21):
You know, those guys.
Speaker 7 (32:22):
Those guys know exactly what we need to do. We
need to go down down there and you know, whether
it's putting a really good drive together, scoring points. We
obviously would have loved to get in the end zone
in that situation. But yeah, those guys, you know, again,
just being able to step up when your numbers called.
You know, it's uh, no one was surprised when when
(32:43):
that happened, when when guys were stepping up, and we're
just gonna continue to to have situations unfortunately, that's kind
of how this league is is some guys are gonna
step up or need to step up some weeks, and uh,
you know they're gonna continue to do that.
Speaker 10 (32:56):
And once again, your defense has a couple of takeaways
and how much are you feeding off of what they're
doing on that side of the wall.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
Yeah, it's huge.
Speaker 7 (33:04):
I mean I can't I can't speak highly enough of
what our defense and what are you know, special teams.
You know what they're doing, it's uh, it's special right now.
But again, like you know, it's our second win, you know,
it's it's a really good win against a really good team.
Don't get me wrong, but we're just going to continue
to wash the tape, get better and and uh, you know,
(33:27):
go from there.
Speaker 11 (33:28):
It's thirty back and forth with defensive teammates when they're
on the field for thirteen plays in almost ten minutes,
and then you guys are out there for three and
scored a ninety seven yard touchdown drive or maybe they're
they're a little tired, but they're all, you know, excited
that you guys just scored.
Speaker 7 (33:42):
Yeah, it's it's mostly you know, during the TV timeouts
or during timeouts, that's when sometimes you can get a
word in every now and then to some of those guys,
especially a team uh, you know my former teammates from
last year. But most of the time, I would say
that everyone's pretty locked in on the field.
Speaker 6 (33:59):
See, I'm just he keeps reiterating that he wants you
to have trusted Hi when he's double teamed.
Speaker 9 (34:05):
He says it over and over again.
Speaker 6 (34:06):
When do you have When did you know you had
trusted him when he was double teamed?
Speaker 3 (34:09):
It was early on.
Speaker 7 (34:10):
It's still growing it, No, I mean I've I've seen it,
you know, in preparing to you know, to play football
and for this team and watching him, you know, the
last couple of years continuing to beat double teams. And
then the thing is too if if we don't get
necessarily the look we're looking for, if they do double
team him, there's guys on our team that can beat
(34:31):
one on one coverage as well, and I'm gonna, you know,
continue to have the trust in those guys as well.
Speaker 10 (34:37):
Sat Is there anyone else in the league, anymp received
you think can put up to play like that, to
beat the double team and then come back Auntry School
and like something else.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (34:46):
I'm not going to compare him to anyone else, you know,
but uh, he's a really good football player, I'll say that.
Speaker 8 (34:52):
Damn.
Speaker 11 (34:52):
What'd you think of that atmosphere? Could you feel those
fans behind you at any point in the game?
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Absolutely?
Speaker 7 (34:57):
Yeah, the fans were incredible, you know, for my first
home game here at US Bank, it was it was
pretty special.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Jefferson finishes with four catches one hundred and thirty three yards.
Jalen nayl Are in closing, was given a big opportunity
to day with Jordan Addison down for this game and
hopefully not much more. Four targets, three catches fifty four
yards and a touchdown and on third and nine with
a Jefferson out of the game, he had a twenty
I think it was like a twenty six yard connection
(35:26):
from Donald late in the game, center of the field
where he had to work himself open, and that first
down was massive.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Was the biggest first down of the game, Paul, because
that pretty much etched in three points on ours and
make it a two score game. Move the chains, burn
more time off the clock, and for Donald, that was
a throw across the middle. You know, I think we
were learning more about Donald two and that he's very
comfortable with the out routes. You can make those long
throws from far hash all the way on the outside,
(35:56):
the speed outs and those kinds of things. It's just
across the middle of the field where he needs to
get better. But to see him be able to throw
that interception to Warner and then come back later and
be cold blooded down the middle of the field, that's huge, right.
You gotta have that short memory. That's how last year
Cousins beat up we beat this team last year was
Cousins play action, taking taking advantage of him across the
(36:17):
middle of the field. Now with Nick Sorenson, it's a
little bit a little bit different in the back end,
but still seeing Donald throw and complete passes across the
middle of the field. I mean, even the big touchdown
the JJ that was a post that was the middle
of the field type throw. Even though there was a
corner that was squeezing him from the outside and you
had a deep middle safety, didn't matter. You had two
guys back there. Still managed to beat him and and
(36:38):
you know, and get the ninety seven yard touchdown throw.
So very impressed with Donald and when he's done thus far,
and if that offensive line can continue to keep him
clean like they have consistently, right, and it's not not
that he's just getting the ball off and getting nailed.
He's he's got time and man's that they think boats
well for all of us.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
Well, you want to go three and zero, you have
to beat the Houston Texans at US Bank Stadium next Sunday.
That's a daunting task. But supposedly today was a daunting task.
The Vikings were underdogs to the San Francisco forty nine ers.
The Niners killed the New York Jets. Everybody saw it
on Monday Night football, and Justin Jefferson left the game
in the third quarter and the Vikings still found a
(37:17):
way to win twenty three to seventeen. Here comes Daniel,
Here comes Stefan Diggs, Joe Mixon, c J Stroud and
the Houston Texans. That's when we next will chat with
you on the Vikings postgame report for Pete Bursich. I'm
Paul Allen. Your Minnesota Vikings are two to zero and
own first place in the NFC North
