Welcome to the Vikings Postgame Report. The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Las Vegas Raiders at U.S. Bank Stadium on Saturday night in week 1 of the 2024 preseason. The Vikings received the opening kick and started the game with quarterback Sam Darnold under center for the first drive of the game. Darnold went 4-for-8 for 59 passing yards before heading to the sidelines. Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy came in and played for almost a half of the Vikings total offensive game time. He finished his debut 11-of-17 passing for 188 yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and an interception. The interception happened early in the game for him, but he finished strong, throwing touchdowns to both Trishton Jackson and Trent Sherfield Sr. Trishton had the high receiving yardage for the game with 4 receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Kene Nwangwu ripped off a 48-yard touchdown and finished the game with 52 total yards rushing. Defensively, Theo Jackson led the team with 7 tackles, while Brian Asamoah II chipped in with 6 tackles and a half sack of his own. Levi Drake Rodriguez, Dallas Turner, and Bo Richter recorded their first NFL sacks, while James Lynch added in a half sack also. Rookie Will Reichard kicked 3 extra points, went 1-of-2 on field goals, including the game winning kick to seal the victory for the Vikings. Up next, the Vikings head to Cleveland to face the Browns in Week 2 of the Preseason on Saturday, August 17th at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Alright, here we are with the Vikings postgame report. I'm
Paul Allen. You're play by play voice on FM one
hundred point three KFAM and of Fox nine during the
preseason with the simulcast, and the analyst by my side
is Pete Bursich Radio and TV. And we just witnessed
the Minnesota Vikings beat the Las Vegas Raiders twenty four
to twenty three, banks in part to a lot of stuff,

(00:41):
but Alabama rookie Will Reikerd walked off on the Las
Vegas Raiders, the first of what we hope as many
walk off winners for Reikerd. He was able to do
this from thirty seven yards out, and the Vikings won
their first preseason game in quite some time. They snapped
a ten game losing streak.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, I mean Kevin O'Connell mentioned that in our press
in our press meeting, he was saying, you know, it's
still important to win, and this first time that since
that he's won a preseason games since he's been here.
So it always it always helps, right, it always, it
always It changes the dynamic from hey, we just got
to get better. We got to get at back, I
get back to work, to Hey, nice job, but we've

(01:22):
got to do a B and C and it's a
lot of momentum. You gotta you got a scrimmage coming
up Monday night, then you're on a plane, you practice
two days against Cleveland Browns, you have a you know,
another preseason game against the Browns. So it gives him
a little bit of a reward for all the work
that they've done thus far. And I think it's something
they can build on.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Kanay Wan Wu, fourthyr. Iowa State. Uh, he got the corner,
he got the edge, and scored on a forty eight
yard touchdown. That was the Minnesota Vikings first touchdown in
this game. He did so rushing and and I think
that there was a tell with kanae wan Wo we
saw on that play that ties into kick return because
I don't know exactly what Matt Daniels was setting up

(02:03):
last week at training camp, but there were some doubles
and some traps and just you you played special teams
for a decade, but they went to their A level
kick returns and when wan Wu gets the sideline where
he likes to be, like he did on this running
play today in the Vikings victory over the Raiders. When
he gets the sideline, good luck, he's gone.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yeah, he can get the angle on anyone and if
you're a safety, he could take a lot of guys
by surprise at that speed. And yeah, again we talked
about the running game Aaron Jones. Obviously it will be
the starter going into the season, but we're gonna need
a lot out of ty Chandler, who I thought did
a nice job on the ground, dropped a couple of passes,
so he's gonna have to work on the receiving game
a little bit. But you know kne Wan who showing

(02:47):
what they saw in him from Iowa.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
State years ago.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Just the speed you get that young man in the
open field, he is so so dangerous. And again going
back to you and talking about the kickoff return that
mimics really a run game in space, and I think
nay Wan was built for that. But it'd be nice
to get him back involved in this offense, whether it's
on kick return or running back. He has a great

(03:11):
opportunity this year and hopefully he takes advantage of it.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
We are going to hear from Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell shortly. Likewise,
for Sam Darnold, who started the game at quarterback, and
Justin Jefferson. They will talk from the locker room, but
from a quarterback standpoint, Donald starts and he goes four
of eight fifty nine yards, supplanted in the first quarter
by McCarthy, who played into the second half. The Michigan

(03:35):
rookie win eleven of seventeen, one eighty eight and two
with an interception. The interception came before the two touchdowns,
one touchdown in the third quarter to Trent Sherfield Junior.
That's a free agent wide receiver they picked up from Buffalo.
There was a bust to coverage on that. Clearly with
the Tristan Jackson touchdown there wasn't. So how do you

(03:57):
analyze McCarthy with the pick, but then he gets two
TD passes?

Speaker 2 (04:02):
No, I think, you know, you take a look at
how Donald started. Donald was on time, accurate, kind of
what this offense needs, right and again I go back,
I go back to that throw he made a Jordan
Addison on the speed out. That's that's what this offense needs,
you know. For JJ, I think what he learned today
was the speed of the game. He got a taste
of it. Now is it is it mid season speed

(04:23):
of the game. No, not yet, but just speeding up
the bootlegs, you know, speeding up his reads. Moved well
in the pocket, extended some plays. So I think he
started off a little bit slowly, but he hung in
there and finished a lot better than he started. And
that's that's what's important in this league. And we're a
vertical offense. We heard JJ talk about it on the sidelines.

(04:43):
That's part of our game, that's who we are. So
for McCarthy, it's good to see him to be able
to throw the ball deep and get that running game
going a little bit. You work in the play action.
That's how we got the touchdown of Trent Sherfield. I mean,
that's how this offense has to be for it to
be effective.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Jail and nail or third year wide receiver from Michigan State.
He's had some injury related problems. One touchdown. It took
place in a blowout loss at the lambeau Field and
Naylor played with the Darnold offense and with the McCarthy offense. Likewise,
for right guard at Ingram So O'Connell started the first
Minnesota moving company. Christian Darisaw Blake Brandell is now the

(05:22):
left guard, Garrett Bradberry at center, at Ingram at right guard,
Brian O'Neal a right tackle. Four fifths came out. Ingram
stayed in with Naylor for McCarthy, and Naylor finished three
catches sixty three yards. I thought he had some good pop.
I thought he did too.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
And we know that there's a competition there who's going
to be that number three receiver, And in this offense,
that number three receiver gets a lot of time on
the field. So you have Brandon Powell and you have
Jalen Naylor, and I think Jalen Naylor obviously has the
physical attributes you want. But you mentioned him staying healthy.
I think that's going to be the biggest challenge. It's
great to see him out here making plays. We know

(05:59):
that's what he can do. But he needs to put
three or four games together of staying on the field, rehabbing,
not you know, not getting a nagging injury, not to
stay away from the hamstrings and all those kinds of things.
And if you can count on him week in and
week out, then I think he's a tremendous option as
a number three receiver.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Kevin O'Connell, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, addressed the
media following the game.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Guys, before I open it up to questions, just wanted to,
you know, quickly acknowledge Kyrie Jackson's family. Really thankful for
them coming up and spending a couple of days with us.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
I thought it was a very special.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Moment for our team, not only today with the pregame
and having his little brother Colt, you know, go out
and win the coin toss for us, but also just
spending time with the whole family, and then yesterday just
a beautiful celebration of life we had privately as a
team with his family, and just want to make sure
they always know that they're part of our Vikings family

(06:58):
moving forward. So really really special a couple of days
welcoming them not only today but yesterday as well, and
just really thankful for them doing that, because Kyrie's for
sure been on all of our hearts and minds as
we've worked through training camp.

Speaker 4 (07:14):
As far as the game goes.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Proud of our guys, it's good to get, you know,
the first one of these in the preseason. Thought it
might come down to a kick. Told the team last night,
I thought Will would kick the game winner, and he did.
Really proud of the way defensively, you know, six drives
in the second half, holding them to five to three
and outs. I think it was getting us the ball
back in the four minute situation. Offensively, some really good

(07:38):
execution in the past game ran for six or five
a carry on the night, thought the guys you it
really took a lot of the things we're working in
the on the practice field and brought it out here
and made it come to life. Still could be a
lot cleaner. Had a couple pre snaps, self inflicted type
things that we'll have to correct, you know, on our
ninety man roster, as we you know, attempt to try

(08:01):
to gain some momentum here in the preseason. Quarterback wise,
I thought Sam did a great job starting the game,
really efficient drive down the field. Tried to give him
a shot there on fourth down, bang bang play to
Speedy and then JJ coming in just unbelievable reps for him,
really learning learning reps here and there a third down

(08:21):
kind of competitive rep. He tries to make a play
and a good player in Jack Jones undercuts the ball
a little late there, But JJ, how about him battling
coming right back and especially coming out of half. I
really wanted to see how he could come in, take
some coaching as a group, and then let's go out
and execute and try to put some points on the
board and find a way to win a football game.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
And Jared leaving the two minute at the end.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
And then you know, I thought, Ryan right, and Will
will to kick the game winner. And Ryan, I think
he averaged you know, fifty seven or so, but no sacks,
six or five a carria. You know, hopefully the quarterbacks
are in there starting their postgame talking about the O
line because I thought they did a nice job.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Well, how do you evaluate his JD's touchdown passes?

Speaker 6 (09:06):
So those easy throws or.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Did they just make them look eas No. I thought
the go ball was beautiful. It's just a go ball.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Tristan did a great job closing the space, stepping on
the corner's toes and slipping by him and JJ five
and one hitchball out trusting him to go to the spot.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
Beautiful throw.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
And then the second throw to our second touchdown to
Trent really off of a hard play action. Started to
feel them, you know, kind of fit gaps a little
quicker and thought we could maybe get an easy one
over the top, but you still got to hit it
and once again comes off the fake eyes up, one
hitchball out, So really positive, had a big conversion there
to muse on a third down. So I thought there

(09:47):
was a lot of positives and a lot of things
that we'll be able to coach off of.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
I really did like the groups we had out on
the field.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Liked the way we were able to get off, you know,
get these guys some good work early. I think it
was twelve plays maybe that first drive, and then we
kept some guys in there who we wanted to see,
you know, continue to.

Speaker 4 (10:04):
Progress with where with where they're at.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Guys like you know, Tristan Jackson and Naylor had a
Naylor had a really good night, surefield guys that you know,
I've been doing things on the practice field. It was
great to see some of those guys just come out
and have fun and and and put it on display
for our Vikings fans to see.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
Come back after the third quarter effort, tickets and coaching.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Was that the plan the whole time or did you
come to that over the.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
Course of the game.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Yeah, that was a plan.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
He was gonna he was always going to start the
third quarter, and and uh, you know, I had a
certain number of reps in mind. I think these uh
you know, we talk a lot about this development plan.
A huge part of it is these real game reps
where there's coaches on the sideline, it's just them and
the defense and the officials out there. And I want
to you know, see him continue to progress. But clearly

(10:52):
everybody can see the arm talent. I just loved seeing
him come right back after you know, the interception and
still aggressive, still stay true to.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
You know, footwork, timing, rhythm, where his eyes should be.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
So there was a lot of positives with JJ's performance
tonight in a lot of areas where we'll be able
to hit the ground running when these guys are back
in on Monday.

Speaker 7 (11:14):
What he did do out there changing fundamentally for you
about where he's at in his development or where he's
at his progression and those sort of things.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
Yeah, I think at this point, Kevin, I'm just looking for,
you know, continue to improve, for him to improve look
comfortable in our system. And like I said at the
very beginning, you know, no ceiling or no floor. But
at the same time, I think, you know, we want
to be smart about that development and make sure that
his training camp is is absolutely going to plan, whether

(11:45):
it's you know, reps with the ones, competitive reps twos
versus the one defense, and then this these critical preseason snaps,
and I think next week in Cleveland, the joint practices
will be huge for him, like it will.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Be for our whole team.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
Really looking forward to going to play a really physical,
tough team. I think Kevin does an unbelievable job as
a head coach, and you know, we've put together two
really good days of work. So although this was a
game think and I'm very thankful to get my first
preseason win since I've been here, I do look at
it as a you know, just another glorified kind of

(12:19):
singular step in the process.

Speaker 8 (12:22):
Lots of talk Kevin about your your list for JJ,
like there's checkpoints more more importantly than like a competition
with Samder's actual checkpoints. How lengthy is that list? And
how much do games affect this? You know, you got practices,
you've got games, joy practices. How much do games play
a role in that list? And to quote you seeing
live action.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Yeah, if there's a list out there that exists. That
would be my first time seeing it. I believe coaching
is a little bit more holistic, organic, whatever word do
you want to use, there's I think Josh and Grant
are doing a great job with that room. I think
all those guys, and specificly Sam and JJ are ahead
of where I thought they would be at this point.

(13:04):
But there is there's a feeling, uh, there's a mindset
towards a position. There's an overall belief in the development
of the position that I'm way more focused on controlling
what we can control, which is, you know, the how
we put together practice, how we lay learn, how we
allow confidence to build and ownership to build. Like I said,

(13:25):
if you've got that list, man, I'd love to see it. No,
it's if it's if it's anywhere, Yeah, if it's anywhere,
it's it's it's somewhere in my mind. But there's a
lot of other crazy stuff in there too.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
Kate Murphy heard tonight.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
He was yeah, he uh uh, he was dealing with
something I really you know, we, like I told you
guys on Thursday, there was a good a good group
of guys that we just in in the smallest of things,
we want to make sure that they're healthy because next
Wednesday and Thursday are huge for for a lot of guys.
So we just wanted it's been a physical camp in
the byprop to that sometimes, especially these games where you

(14:02):
wanted to maybe see a few more guys out there.
We tried to be smart with those guys, still knowing
we had if you know, our collection of o Lineman.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
Ready to roll.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
We had you know, a good amount of our guys
on defense. But yeah, as we as we move forward
into these joint practices, we're expecting to have you know,
Grenard van Ginkle, you know a lot of those guys back.
And then Aaron Jones as well pretty quickly here to
go along with Harry Jets and Van Ginkle was really
he's still kind of on a timeline, but he's in

(14:32):
a really good spot right now. So really it was
just Harry and Jets and then there was some reasonings
behind everybody else for health purposes, but the plan was
to at least get our starter some work.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
There was a.

Speaker 7 (14:41):
Report that Stefan Gilmour is going to come in for
a visit. I think this Monday or whenever. Is that accurate?
First of all, and second, like, where do you kind
of see that whole group?

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Yeah, I think you know, you know what I can
say is I think KWASI and his staff been looking
for ways as we've really tried to piece together plan,
you know, having lost you know, two young players that
we won to injury, and obviously with Kyrie's very very
unfortunate situation, there's been a you know, a significant hit
to the depth there. We brought in Fabian, which was great.

(15:14):
I think he's come in and hit the ground running.
The versatility of Jay Ward. I know, you guys saw
him at corner. He's still very much you know, a
guy that can play really two or three spots with
his skill set. Bobby McCain flashed me a little bit
tonight as well. But as far as guys will potentially add,
I know we're gonna be, you know, constantly trying to
figure out if there's a player out there that we

(15:36):
can add to this team that has a chance to
help us win. And you know, I've had a ton
of respect in Stefan Gilmore's career playing against him. This
is guy that's done it at a really high level
level for a long time. So if that's something that
ends up being a possibility. I know Quasi and his
staff will, We'll get us going in the right direction.

Speaker 5 (15:56):
Have you talked about JJ mcbouncin back interception right away?

Speaker 3 (16:00):
Yeah, how to do in real time, especially in your
first you know, in your first game. You know, I could,
he was, he was excited, he was ready to roll.
I mean, this is an unbelievable home environment.

Speaker 5 (16:11):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
You know a lot of our new guys, you know,
they were kind of blown away. Hey, this is just
a preseason game, but this place is unbelievable. So that's
one of the reasons why you you know, you love
having this opportunity in front of our fans. It's important
to me to win at home, whether they you know,
whether they count or not in the long run, because
we want to build a team that can win football
games at home and our fans deserve it. And I

(16:33):
think JJ was excited about being in this environment, being
at us Bank Stadium. I wanted the guys to go
through just the whole game day feel from the hotel,
you know, getting here for you know, warm ups, going
through a day and and then go out there and
have themselves a successful day. And I think, you know,
I did want to let you go. Guys know, the
only you know, real injury of to report is Jabril

(16:54):
Cox got a little bit of a groin. We'll see
how he turns over moving forward. But for playing so
many guys, you know, that was my number one prior.
He was hopefully get good work. And I think it
just speaks to where our team's at, you know, and
they're physically you know, our attempt to physically prepare them
for the season. I'm happy with the way training camp went.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
What did you see on the interception for JJ and
what was kind of his explanation thought process there?

Speaker 3 (17:18):
Yeah, so you know, to let's just dive in. It
was corners over, so he knew it was Manda Man.
They ended up bringing a backer. Canay attempted to you know,
pick up that pressure. It was a pretty violent hit
right at his feet and if we call that an
NFL pocket, you know, felt a little bit got to
go back and watch it, but felt like maybe he
could have put his foot in the ground and delivered that.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
Bal to Tristan a little faster.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
He kind of chose to then move to his right
and ball got undercut a little late there, you know,
as he kind of moved to his right and still
tried to put it on Tristan, but he definitely, you know,
knew kind of right away kind of where he was
at with everything and was ready to go right back
out there. But yeah, I think his recognition and everything.

(18:02):
It's just that feel of those weighty downs, which is
you know, it was a very similar I don't know
if it was the same exact call from PG on
the other side when we did hit Nick Muse in
the third quarter there across the middle, but felt very similar.
And I think that was a little bit more of
the ideal rhythm and timing of putting that ball on Nick,
you know, accurately, and we moved the chains and score
touchdown on the drive. It's nice to see the Dallas

(18:24):
turner speed rush get home a couple of times.

Speaker 4 (18:26):
And having for rookies get a sacked today.

Speaker 3 (18:28):
Yeah, you know, what do we have? We had Richter
had two. I think maybe unless they took one of
them away. It's a shame to who they give it to.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
I think they called it a quarterback run.

Speaker 4 (18:40):
Those don't exist.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Yeah, but Dallas is sacked and then LEVI I mean
I just felt some of those young guys active, but yeah,
it helps. I mean Dallas has basically been going against
Christian Darsol for the better part of three weeks now,
so I think he was happy to come to us
Bank Stadium and not see number seventy one standing across
from him. Yeah, I think, you know, we'll go back
and look at the tape, but you know, I think

(19:03):
we you know, they drove it on.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
It's pretty good in the first half.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
We'll figure out, uh, you know, kind of what worked,
what worked, and what didn't. Maybe, you know, give guys
some more ops, make sure we're smart about the Cleveland
game in the Philly game, because we're going to be,
you know, trying to be competitive in those games regardless
of who plays. Just want to keep stacking positive momentum
for you know, it's a different team this year.

Speaker 4 (19:23):
It's a younger team.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
It's there's a lot of guys that we're trying to
fast track development at different positions, and ultimately, I just
like the enthusiasm.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
I like the juice.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
I like guys that that have laser focus on just
that that daily progress that we talk about.

Speaker 4 (19:40):
Just with Jalen Naylor, you've showed a lot of belief
in you throughout the last couple of years. How Yeah,
we kind of come together for him.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
During camp and yeah, those are you guys that everybody
here has been at training camp seeing him make plays.
So to see him show up, what did you have
three for sixty three? You know, three three explosives? You know,
that's what he's capable. Really played X tonight So in
justin Jefferson's spot in that first group and showed up,

(20:08):
I mean showed up, ran some really good routes. You know,
has a great way about him, but he also has
the versatility to maybe go inside. And we're gonna we're
gonna continue to feed him and and give him ups
because we've always been excited about him. It's just been
an availability thing. And he stacked some really really good
weeks together now, which has always been kind of to

(20:28):
be expected as long as he can keep putting it together.
And I'm really proud of where he's at the work
the offseason, getting ready to go with a real laser
focus on what he wants to accomplish this year.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
Thanks guys defensively for the vikings THEO Jackson part of
a very very deep safety group. Kevin O'Connell and Brian
Flores have He led the team in tackles with seven.
Brian assom Wah had six. But you pointed this out
during the course of the simulcasts. It's not that the
first defense played poorly. It didn't, but Jonathan Grenard and

(21:00):
Andrew Van Ginkle didn't play likewise for Harrison Smith. But
when the twos and or the threes got in there
for Flora's defense, I thought they looked really good.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Yeah, I thought so too. I mean, we saw a
lot of eight man front three deep coverage out of
our defense early on in this game, and we really
don't do that. And the Raiders, to their credit, they
had a lot of down the field type crossing routes
and that's where the corners in safeties have to get
rote on who's passing, whom off and what time. And
so I think the Raiders challenged us quite a bit

(21:30):
in that respect. But the speed of our defense, Paul
and I was very very impressed with Dallas Turner in
the way he can get around the edge. And yeah,
Andres Pete's been around for quite some time, but he
has experienced and he was able to beat him get
a hit on the quarterback and then come back and get,
you know, get a big sack to stop the drive.
So defensively, guys like Bo Richter kind of jumping out.

(21:53):
You know, there's some of these names that you see.
We've heard a lot about Pat Jones and Gabe Murphy
and everything into camp, but today, I think defensively it
was about Bull Richter. I thought Brian awesome showed up
quite a bit and he played quite a bit, so
good for him. He's another guy that's got to stay healthy.
And you know, we're gonna have to figure out this
cornerback carousel as we get further into into this preseason.

Speaker 1 (22:17):
Sam Darnold was the starting quarterback in the first preseason game.
Justin Jefferson did not suit up. He's never played in
a preseason game. Why would he. He joined the simulcast
for the entire third quarter and was unbelievably fun on
the sideline during the Tristian Jackson and Trent Sherfield junior
I make that senior touchdowns. Donald chatted with the media

(22:39):
from the locker room.

Speaker 6 (22:40):
One preseason game.

Speaker 5 (22:40):
But our first chance to see you, yeah, uh felt
good out there.

Speaker 6 (22:46):
Obviously, you know, we had the helmet, you know, malfunction
and you know, just the communication out there. You know.

Speaker 5 (22:53):
With all that being said, it was was awesome to
be able to get out there and you know just compete,
you know, to be able to you know, come from
the hotel to the stadium, get like a little routine going.
So yeah, it was it was great to get out
there and play some football again.

Speaker 6 (23:10):
It was fun.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
Said, did the helmet get fixed or was the whole
time you were playing you didn't have that si?

Speaker 6 (23:16):
Uh No, we fixed it after that drive.

Speaker 4 (23:18):
It was it was clear, but yeah, you had.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
It for the whole drive where.

Speaker 6 (23:21):
You were kind of you couldn't hear. Yeah, you know,
it was just kind of going in and out.

Speaker 5 (23:25):
Yeah, and uh so I kind of had to run
over to KO a couple of times, you know, like
it was nigh cool.

Speaker 6 (23:32):
So got my cardio in day, which was good fun.

Speaker 4 (23:35):
Sam.

Speaker 6 (23:35):
Do you get a taste of what the flavor of
this offense.

Speaker 4 (23:38):
Could be on a day like this?

Speaker 6 (23:39):
For sure?

Speaker 5 (23:41):
You know obviously with the drive that we had, you know,
just I think, you know, trying to sound.

Speaker 6 (23:46):
Schedule a little bit better.

Speaker 5 (23:47):
We got ourselves in some you know, third and longer
situations that you kind of want to say out of
but you know, we were able to convert those third
downs and go down and you know, obviously we wanted to.

Speaker 6 (23:57):
Punch it in there at the end of that drive.

Speaker 5 (23:59):
But yeah, you know I felt really good out there
and then watching you know, what JJ was able to
do and what Jared were able to do, you know,
it was it was fun to be able to just
listen to you know, Kevin call the plays and uh,
you know roll from there.

Speaker 6 (24:12):
And yeah, it was really fun. You what did you
think of Yeah, you know, I thought JJ did a
really good job.

Speaker 5 (24:24):
You know, he's kind of done that throughout camp too,
like whenever he makes a mistake, really like throughout the
quarterback room, if we make a mistake, I feel like
we've been doing a really good job.

Speaker 6 (24:32):
Of being able to bounce back throughout camp.

Speaker 5 (24:34):
And it was really really cool to to see him
bounce back in the moment during a you know, his
first game at US Bank and you.

Speaker 6 (24:42):
Know live you know, preseason game. So that was really
good to be able to see that out of JJ.

Speaker 1 (24:48):
You know, what it's like to be a rookie quarterback.
Is that crucial for him to come out here and
play like that and confidence wise for the fans all
the above.

Speaker 6 (24:57):
Yeah, I think, you know, for for him to just.

Speaker 5 (25:01):
You know, just with you know, a lot going on,
you know, system and trying to figure out, you know,
what the defense is doing, and you know, I think
at the end of the day, like I feel like
he did a really good job of with his progressions,
you know, tying his eyes to his feet and you know,
everything that we talk about throughout you know, when we're
in the KB room and and translating it to on
the field work. You know, I thought he did a

(25:22):
really good job with that. And uh, you know, whenever
you do that, usually you're gonna have a solid day.
And you know, I thought he had a really solid
day to day.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
Sam, we've kind of watched Jalen neil your rattle to
be healthy a little bit and obviously said a healthy,
solid off season.

Speaker 4 (25:37):
Just what do you like about him?

Speaker 5 (25:39):
And can you talk a little bit.

Speaker 6 (25:40):
About the connection you have word with Yeah.

Speaker 5 (25:42):
I mean, as you guys know, he's been making a
ton of plays throughout training camp. He's been showing up
and you know, for him to be able to come
out here and continue to make plays for us, you know,
it shows a lot about you know, how hard he's
worked not only to you know, bawl out but also
stay healthy.

Speaker 6 (25:58):
You know, it's been it's been great to be able
to have him out.

Speaker 4 (26:01):
There and copive with them.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
So Cleveland is next. Kevin Stefanski, who spent many years
with the Minnesota Vikings, starting in two thousand and six
as Brad Childress's right hand man, became offensive coordinator for
this team. His last game here was that playoff loss
at San Francisco to a Niners team that would end
up going to the Super Bowl and was a Jimmy
Garoppolo overthrow to Immanuel Sanders from winning that game. Kevin

(26:35):
became the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. He's a
two time Associated Press Coach of the Year. We hook
his Cleveland Browns in the next preseason game, but that'll
be after a couple of joint practices in Cleveland at
their facility Wednesday and Thursday. I mean, that just sounds
like fun.

Speaker 4 (26:52):
It does.

Speaker 2 (26:53):
And like I said, you go into this section of
training camp and say, all right, we've got some momentum here.
We want, you know, one of the first pre season game
we have to build on everything that we've done. So
this is eight days of great work for this Minnesota
Vikings team and a lot of decisions are going to
be made. A lot of guys are going to win
starting spots. Today was just the first chapter in the
in the fourth chapter story that's going to be this week,

(27:15):
and I think we're fired up. I think that the
Cleveland Brown's a perfect team for this, for this franchise
to go up against the physicality of them up front,
our offensive line. You know, those kinds of matchups are
running game. All those things will come into play over
the next few days and I'm just happy to be
able to cover it all Paul and see it all
developed all unfold right before.

Speaker 1 (27:37):
Pete Bursage, former linebacker and linebackers coach for the Minnesota Vikings,
began his eighteenth year analyzing football for the KFAM Minnesota
Vikings radio network. And it's a treat working with you
into calling games with you sitting next to you. You're
an elite football mind. And it was a lot of
fun in the victory over the Raiders, Thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
Yeah, thank you.

Speaker 1 (27:57):
The Vikings beat the Raiders twenty four to three. Alabama
rookie Will Reiker walked off from thirty seven for Pete versage.
I'm Paul Allen. That is the Vikings postgame report. Preseason
game number one was a W
