Welcome back in to bb AND Radio presented by Clark's
Puppin's Shop, and we are thrilled to have from Women's
Tennis with us in studio. This week, We've got senior
Zoe Hammond out of Edmund, Oklahoma. She has just returned
recently from Baton Rouge and the NCAAA qualifiers. First of all, Zoe,
welcome onto the show and tell us a little bit
(06:47):
about the experience of competing in the singles this fall,
especially trying to qualify for an NCAA against a lot
of really talented players.
Speaker 12 (06:55):
Oh, thank you for having me.
Speaker 13 (06:56):
Well, it's been quite a long season, but it's been
really great.
Speaker 12 (07:00):
I've learned a lot about myself. I've grown a lot.
Speaker 13 (07:02):
As a player, and it really has prepared me for
the spring because I've played so many different girls, so
many amazing talented players, and I learned how to play,
you know, in different situations. I learned how to play
kind of by myself, which is obviously I haven't done
it in a while. It's been about four years since
i've you know, had to play on my own because
(07:23):
I'm playing with the team now. So I was able
to grow a lot, and I think it really prepared
me for Spring. And I think that even though I
wasn't with the team as much as I would have
liked to have been, it helped me prepare for those
my teammates.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
What a sa marias you feel like has helped you grow?
You mentioned that we're Samaris. You feel like you've grown
as a player.
Speaker 13 (07:44):
Competing well, the competition pool was really really strong, so
I was able to see lots of different kinds of
players and that really helps me overall, just because you
never know who you're going to play in the spring,
and so I have to be prepared for everything, and
so I was able to.
Speaker 12 (08:01):
Learn a lot. I learned a lot how to.
Speaker 13 (08:03):
Kind of deal with adversity on my own because I
wasn't with the team and so obviously I've I've kind
of relied on it. It's super super important in the spring,
So not having that wasn't obviously as ideal, and I
had to learn how to, you know, deal with that
adversity on my own and play kind of without my
teammates the camaraderie. So it was really great to learn
(08:23):
kind of relearn a foundation for myself.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
You did have a teammate down there with you, though.
How much was that a help just to have her
You probably didn't see much of each other during competition,
but after the day was over, getting a chance just
to talk to her about it, Yeah.
Speaker 12 (08:38):
It makes life so much easier.
Speaker 13 (08:40):
I felt just kind of nice just to be able
to go through the same things with somebody. Obviously we
weren't ever really together on the same court, which wasn't
as fun, but just you know, having dinner together and
you know, spending time getting treatment and like in the
hotel room and just seeing different parts of the country
like with my teammate.
Speaker 12 (08:58):
It was just such a special experience and so glad.
Speaker 13 (09:00):
That I was able to have at least one Obviously
we had the whole team together at regionals, but just
having a few other people make such a big difference.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Yeah, it's a pretty small roster. I think there's seven,
maybe six or seven of you. So what's that like
going on road trips being such a small but tight
knit group.
Speaker 12 (09:20):
Oh, it's amazing.
Speaker 13 (09:22):
I wouldn't trade those experiences of the world because there
are only seven of us, so you know, we can
all fit in the same car going to a road
trip or something like that. So we have some really
crazy fun conversations. We do all kinds of who knows,
some mischievous acts.
Speaker 12 (09:37):
We're in the treatment room. Our poor trainers were hounding her.
We're having the best time.
Speaker 13 (09:43):
But it's so fun because there's only seven of you,
so like it's so much easier to get close with them.
And I feel like, by the time that season is over,
like I know them all in the back of my hand,
and those kinds of bonds, like you keep those forever.
And I'm so I'm honestly so thankful that I'm on
a small team because it makes those relationships so much
tighter and we all just have the best time.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
It's an individual sport, but you're competing as a team.
Tell me what that dynamic is like where you're trying
to pull for each other while at the same time
concentrating on what you need to do when you're on
the court.
Speaker 13 (10:16):
It's definitely tough and it does take time to learn.
I mean, coming from an individual sport and this is a.
Speaker 12 (10:21):
Very very lonely sport. So when I.
Speaker 13 (10:24):
Started my freshman year, I honestly it was it was
tough to like try to, you know, keep my focus
but also like kind of cheer my teammates on at
the same time, because I've never had to. I've never
had teammates in my life. So but once you kind
of learned the dynamic, you kind of just you kind
of keep your eyes forward and you know, make sure
that you're focused on the peripheral as well. It makes
(10:45):
it a lot easier, and it actually does help when
you're on the court because you see that your teammates
are fighting right beside you. Obviously maybe not like on
the same court as you, but you know, just a
few feet away, and it makes your life feel a
little bit less lonely, especially on the court, because it
can feel really really isolating out there. You know, when
you have no coach, you have no well you have
(11:07):
coach in college but when you're out there playing by yourself, you're.
Speaker 12 (11:10):
Just you're stuck.
Speaker 13 (11:12):
But you don't feel as stuck when you're playing by
beside your teammates.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
So you take a little break now, and I understand
you get to go home for a few days, right, Yeah,
looking forward to that.
Speaker 12 (11:21):
Oh I can't wait.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Yeah, but little time off before things really get going
in January and you start your spring schedule, the team
events in the spring. So what are you focused on
the next couple of months to prepare yourself for the
rigors of an SEC schedule in the spring.
Speaker 13 (11:39):
Well, as of right now, I'm kind of giving myself
some resident recovery. It's been a long few months, and
I think that resting and recharging before a long season
is super super important.
Speaker 12 (11:49):
I think we're all kind of taking just.
Speaker 13 (11:50):
A little bit of time to, like, you know, spend
some time together off the court, because we didn't always
get to, especially you know with long, busy schedules and
school schedules, that kind of thing. So we're just taking
a little bit of time just to you know, take
some time off the court, because it can it's pretty
easy to get burnt out, especially when you're spending that
much time on the road, but once we start up,
(12:11):
I'm gonna do as much as I can to be
strong on the court, strong off the court, do a
lot of on court fitness off court fitness.
Speaker 12 (12:19):
We're gonna get strong in the weight room.
Speaker 13 (12:20):
Our strengthen conditioning coach is phenomenal, so she's going to
really help us with that. And we have a great
nutrition staff and we're working with them one on one
to be able to fu fuel our bodies and you know,
just build a good foundation for ourselves in every area.
And our trainer is amazing too, so she's really proactive
in making sure that we're healthy and preventing injuries before
(12:44):
we even start, so that like we're not reacting to things,
we're being proactive. So I think the entire program is
really really set, I think for a good foundation for
the spring.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
Taking the experiences you had in the fall and just
trying to get better as a player, what are you
going to be focused on going into the spring taking
this time once you get back on the court, what
will you be focused on?
Speaker 13 (13:06):
I think for me, it's really important to have a
good mindset going into it because obviously it's going to
be long. There are going to be long days, long weekends.
It might obviously maybe some tough losses. It's not easy.
You see, it's probably the toughest conference in women's cennis.
So I have to realize that tennis is a game
of errors, and I have to learn how to manage
(13:26):
them and accept them and realize that it's not going
to be easy. I'm going to have to earn every
single point that I'm playing, whether it be in the
double's court, even in practice, like, I have to work
as hard as I possibly can because I'm going to
have to suffer a little bit, and I think preparing
myself and on and off the court to realize that
and that it's going to be a long four months.
Speaker 12 (13:48):
It's probably the most important.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
For me, I would imagine, because tennis can be such
a grueling sport, like you were talking about, especially at
an elite level, you never stop training physically. You also
never stop training mentally.
Speaker 13 (14:01):
Right, Yes, it's it's honestly one of the most important
aspects of tennis. I don't think people realize how mental
tennis is. It's it's very i would say, lonely. I mean,
obviously in college the environment is a little bit different
you have more people around you, but at the same time,
like ultimately it's on you, like you have to finish
(14:22):
that last point, Like you can't just run out the clock.
You have to execute. You have to be able to
finish it off. And so it's it's very difficult and
sometimes like matches can swing and like there's just no way.
Speaker 12 (14:35):
Out of it until you get that last point finished.
Speaker 13 (14:38):
So being able to have you know, like a strong
foundation in yourself and like those around you, and that
you've prepared and done all the work that you need
to is honestly, it's just as important as being able
to hit the forehand of the back hand inside the court,
like because if you don't think you can, you probably won't.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
So we got to take a quick time out. We'll
continue our chat with Zoe Hammond when we come back.

Welcome back into bb AND Radio. We're presented by Clark's
Poppin Shop and we're chatting with Zoe Hammond, the senior
out of Edmund, Oklahoma from Women's Tennis, and I wanted
to ask you a little bit about your personal journey
to get to Kentucky and playing at Kentucky's coming from Edmund, Oklahoma,
it's a long way to get to the Bluegrass. But
let's go back to when you were being recruited, because
(20:09):
one thing that I think some people have already kind
of forgotten because we're five years removed. Around the time
you were trying to get noticed by colleges and being recruited,
we had the COVID pandemic shut everything down. And then
it was the year or so following coming out of
that when things slowly got back to normal. So what
(20:29):
was that like, that whole period of trying to get
noticed by schools and trying to you know, get your
recruitment out there when things were sort of shut down
and then slowly reopening and tournaments were starting back up
in events like that.
Speaker 13 (20:41):
Yeah, it was definitely not an easy time for anybody
my age because during that time, a lot of schools
were not offering visits. They weren't allowing us to be
on campus. We couldn't really go see our coaches, like
or the college coaches that we wanted to see, like
they couldn't come to us. And that feel like that's
a really big part of recruiting. So it was really
(21:02):
really tough to get on campus because I feel like
that's a really big part of knowing where you want
to go is like you have to see it, you
have to be there, you have to feel the environment.
You have to see the girls, you have to interact
with them, interact with the coaches one on one.
Speaker 12 (21:16):
It's much different than a phone call.
Speaker 13 (21:18):
It's much different than like a little zoom meeting or
a zoom video over, Like you.
Speaker 12 (21:22):
Know the facilities, like you have to be there. You
got to see it for yourself.
Speaker 13 (21:26):
So it was tough, and at the same time, I
honestly was not super heavily recruited. I have I feel
like I've flourished a lot more in college than I
was in high school. I struggled a lot with performance anxiety.
I never really liked to compete. It was really tough
for me too, so I didn't actually go out and
go play tournaments where a lot of other girls my
age were, and that's where coaches.
Speaker 12 (21:47):
Would see them.
Speaker 13 (21:48):
So I wasn't always you know, I wasn't getting a
lot of interest.
Speaker 12 (21:52):
Obviously I had some.
Speaker 13 (21:55):
And obviously UK was and that was beyond anything I
could have ever imagined.
Speaker 12 (22:00):
So I'm so happy that it worked out the way
it did.
Speaker 13 (22:02):
But it was tough because also everyone was getting their
COVID year back, and a lot of coaches like they
couldn't really guarantee me a spot because they were telling me, oh,
we don't know if this senior or this fifth year
is going to take their COVID year. So I honestly
don't know if there's a spot for you. And I
had a lot of conversations with coaches about that, and
(22:23):
it was tough because I was I was thinking, well,
I mean, obviously, I want to feel valued on this team,
like I want to know for sure if I'm going
to be able to get a spot. So a lot
of coaches telling me like, oh, you know it's fifty
to fifty was it was tough for me?
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Ultimately landing at Kentucky, what was
the appeal to the Bluegrass and how has it helped
you flourish since you've been here?
Speaker 13 (22:49):
Well, honestly, from the second I landed at the Blue
Guss Airport, I do that this was the place for me.
Speaker 12 (22:54):
I'm not kidding.
Speaker 13 (22:55):
I heard yes, I heard I heard the derby the
horse racing bell, and I was like, oh, man, it's go,
It's game over. I'm already saying yes and I've barely
been here fifteen seconds.
Speaker 12 (23:06):
But just everyone here is so.
Speaker 13 (23:09):
Down to earth, like I truly believe, and even though
we're in a huge athletic environment. We're in the SEC,
We're we're seen by a lot of schools, like we're
one of the top schools in the whole nation for athletics.
It does not feel like that. I don't feel like
anybody here has an ego. I don't think anybody here
feels like they're better than everyone else just because they're
in the SEC. Like these are real, genuine, authentic people,
(23:30):
and I think that's why I've been able to flourish
because I've been around so many amazing people like my coach,
there's my teammates, like I everyone at athletics and performance
nutrition and sports recovery and stricting, the conditioning, even like
sports media who have interacted with everybody here is genuinely
they're just such big, strong, passionate BBN fans And it
(23:53):
just makes me so happy because nobody here just they
think that just because they're part of the BBN, like
they're part of some I don't know, like elite group.
Like they don't think they're elite. They're just they just
love the school. And that's what I love about it.
I can talk about all day.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
You've excelled in the classroom and on the court. Since
you've been here, graduated with your bachelors in what three years,
and SEC Scholar, Athlete of the Year, Academic All American,
how have you been able to learn to divide your
time between being the athlete and being the student in student.
Speaker 13 (24:30):
Athlete, you know, it definitely takes time to learn, I
will say, but you just have to be intentional. I think,
you know, being aware that you do have kind of
a full time job as an athlete, like there are
really no no gaps in free time, Like if I
have thirty minutes in between class and practice, I'm spending
(24:51):
this thirty minutes finishing assignment early at least starting one.
You know, it's all about making time to explain it,
but time management is extremely important for an atholete and
so I think that learning that skill early on and
having people to hold you accountable is super important because
(25:12):
we have academic advisors who have us go to study
hall and building really good habits in your freshman year
is really something that helped me because I used to
do six hours of study hall with my other teammate,
and it really forced me to make use of that
time like I had to. I had to spend six
(25:33):
hours in there, I had to actually do some homework.
Speaker 12 (25:37):
I couldn't just stare at the wall. They held me accountable.
Speaker 13 (25:40):
So I think making sure that you surround yourself with
people that are willing and wanting you to succeed in
the classroom is so important because if I were just
doing it on my own, I'd be like, ah, you
know it's due tonight.
Speaker 12 (25:53):
But you know, like who's holding me accountable?
Speaker 13 (25:55):
Like I d my teammates to be able to hold
me accountable because you know, like my GPA for theirs,
because we have a team GPA.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Chatting with Zoe Hammond here on bb AND Radio presented
by Clark's Pumping Shop. And you're wanting to continue challenging
yourself because I think you want to do law school
next right, Yes, that is.
Speaker 12 (26:15):
The ultimate goal.
Speaker 13 (26:16):
We'll see how long it takes me to get there,
but hopefully i'll get there someday.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Is there a a I don't know if it'd be
necessarily called a discipline, but is there a particular thing
about law you want to study?
Speaker 13 (26:28):
You know, at this point in time, I don't think
there's any one area that I'm particularly interested in or
like I want to rule out because the industries are
changing so often, even like especially in sports for example,
I feel like by the time that I'm done with
law school, there could be so many fields that I
could potentially find interested in that didn't even exist today.
(26:49):
So I don't want to, you know, put all my
eggs in one basket. And also eventually would like to
maybe try to be a judge. I think that would
be a great position, So we'll see. But I mean,
I'm honestly opened to anything. I don't like to, you know,
pin myself down too early because I think there's so
much room to grow, so much room to have lots
of experience.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
So I think Judge Hammond has an ice ring. So
but but you also have a dream of trying to
turn pro, going into pro tennis. Have you looked into that?
I know it's super competitive. Have you looked into the
process and what all's involved in trying to turn pro
once you get done at Kentucky.
Speaker 13 (27:26):
Yes, it's I think it kind of depends on each
individual person really and their journey.
Speaker 12 (27:32):
But it's tough. I'm not gonna lie. It's you're gonna
have to.
Speaker 13 (27:36):
Uh make schedules, You're gonna have to fund everything yourself,
which is pretty tard and you're gonna have to travel
to some very exotic places in order to get some
points and you know, find a way on the tour.
Speaker 12 (27:51):
But it's tough.
Speaker 13 (27:53):
I mean, I think though here there's been a lot
of people that have turned pro after playing, so I
have lots of resources if I do choose to do so,
I could learn a lot about it, and I think
that I could be able potentially to train in Lexington
and base out of Lexington or somewhere nearby. So there's
(28:14):
just a lot of elements, a lot of details that
you don't realize are part of professional.
Speaker 12 (28:19):
Tennis that are so I there are actually lots of.
Speaker 13 (28:22):
Things I don't know yet, so I need to probably
get on that soon. But but yeah, so it's kind
of just I really could do prove for as long
as I wanted. Like it doesn't there's not really like
a certain timeline for any specific person like I.
Speaker 12 (28:41):
It really just depends.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
So Zo, it's been a fun conversation. We appreciate you
coming on the show.
Speaker 12 (28:47):
Thank you. I'm really glad that I got to be here.
I appreciate having me.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah, absolutely, and good luck to you and the team
in the spring when you jump into SEC play with
the team of bands.
Speaker 12 (28:56):
Thank you. I can't wait. I'm kunding down the days.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Yeah, I've enjoyed that time off at home too. In
the meantime during the holidays. That's Zoe Hammond's Senior out

Speaker 3 (32:31):
Welcome back in to Clark's Pumping Shop BBN Radio. I'm
Darren Hedrick. We're joined by Logan Stenberg now to talk
about these Wildcats who have won three straight after beating
Tennessee Tech and Logan, first of all, I just want
to say kind of echo what Jeff pccoro said on
the postgame show Saturday. I don't care that it's an
FCS opponent. You had somebody that was averaging four or
(32:52):
five hundred yards of offense, you shut them down and
win forty two to ten. That was a good day
for the Wildcats Saturday against the Eagles.
Speaker 24 (32:59):
Yeah, you talked about SCS FBS who they are. They're
a ten to o team. You know they're coming into
Kroger Field thinking we can do something here. Obviously, the
head coach had words prior, which were you know, questionable
at best, I would say, but that quarterback's insane. I
mean that entire offense runs through him. He's dual threat.
He throws a good ball, he makes a good decision.
So I was happy to get the win.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
And it was senior day, and it's got to be
extra special when you're able to win and do it
in that fashion on a senior day.
Speaker 11 (33:27):
I completely agree.
Speaker 24 (33:28):
You know, it's special for those guys, and it's a
little weird with nil these guys come in. We've got
a bunch of seniors that you know, they've only played
eight games at Kroger Field, so how special it is
for them may be different for some of the guys
that have been here four or five years.
Speaker 11 (33:41):
But at the end of the day, it's special. Nonetheless.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
Yeah, that's something I hadn't even thought about in this
day and age of college athletics or seniors that may
have played two or three years at one school but
then their senior days at a completely different school in
this day and age.
Speaker 24 (33:55):
Yeah, I think about Josh Braun, you know, and this
is his third SEC school and he comes in and
he's obvious a huge impact on the offensive line for us.
He's played well this year, but how that senior year,
Senior Day is kind of picture for him. It's different,
you know, it has to be, and but just glad
to have them, honestly.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Yeah, the biggest storyline for this football team right now
is the fact that you go back a month ago
and people have just sort of left this team where
you know, it was like, well, tough season, tough year,
a lot of questions around the program. Three weeks later,
we're talking about a potential bowl game if they can
take care of business in these last two weeks.
Speaker 24 (34:31):
Yeah, and you know, the naysayers will always have something
to say, of course, and the Peanut Gallery has their opinions.
But when you looked at this schedule at the beginning
of the year, this is kind of how we saw
it going.
Speaker 11 (34:41):
Let's be honest.
Speaker 24 (34:42):
We saw that chunk in October those four games would
be really rough.
Speaker 11 (34:46):
Hopefully we could steal one. You know.
Speaker 24 (34:48):
We went in played Texas very well, very close. I
think about the Old Miss game as well, that could
have been a win. And then if you really want
to go down the rabbit hole, you know, what if
Cutter was starting, what if Calzada wasn't the one. What
if we had cut and he kind of got to
work out those kinks early in the year, and we
got to this point in the season and what we're,
you know, completely different team, seven and three, seven and
(35:08):
two whatever.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
It looks like, yeah, yeah, and you get one yard against,
one yard away from against Texas, from the huge win
exactly Crogfield. So yeah, it's great to see where this
team has been the last three weeks, beating Auburn, Florida,
now Tennessee Tech, getting ready for Vanderbilt this weekend. In
terms of Cutter Bowlie, you know, you talk about his
continued improvement, but since the time he took over as quarterback,
(35:32):
this young man has dazzled and done some incredible things
on the field.
Speaker 24 (35:37):
Light years better than I think we could have expected him.
You know, after he got thrown in last year in Texas,
we kind of saw the spark. This year, you know,
he got thrown into the fire with the Calzada benching
and the injury. I'm super happy to see where he's
kind of gone and progressed throughout the year. You can
tell he's comfortable that offense runs through him. We spoke
about the Tennessee Tech guy. It's a very similar situation.
Speaker 11 (35:59):
Now.
Speaker 24 (36:00):
The only gripe I have is the interceptions. But you
know what, I'll take that because he's confident, he's got
a short memory. Is what you want as a quarterback.
He's ready to go out there and sling the ball around.
He's done it well the past three weeks.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
And Bush Hampden has done a great job of tailoring
the play calls around Bowley's strengths, and we've even seen
them start to go a little more up tempo at times.
Speaker 24 (36:20):
This year, Bush was the one that was getting hated
on in social media the most, and I've been on
his tail, you know, thinking we need to get a
little better scheme wise. But the last four weeks, I'll
even say four, his scheme has been incredible. He's just
out coaching these guys. You know, he's playing chess and
the other team's playing checkers. He's really implemented Kendrick Law,
(36:40):
which is something that we needed to do. We finally
got a downfield attack through the air. I think we're
in a great place going into Vanderbilt this weekend.
Speaker 3 (36:47):
Yeah, Kendrick Law has been an outstanding wide receiver. Seth
McGowan is coming off a three touchdown performance against the
Golden Eagles. He's been running the ball so effective pretty
much all year though.
Speaker 24 (36:59):
Yeah, he runs hard and I saw a stack. Correct
me if I'm wrong. Is he tied now with Benny
and for a season? Yeah, I think it's a single
season record. I think he's twelve touchdowns, which I was
extremely I was surprised to see that.
Speaker 11 (37:13):
I didn't expect it. But going back to him, man,
he just runs hard.
Speaker 24 (37:16):
He's a guy that kind of got a new lease
on life is taking advantage of it. Glad to see
he's got a home here now. And so the fact
that he's having that success on the field, I can't
wait to see a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
I want to go back to a particular play against
Tennessee Tech this past weekend with Cutter Bowley when he
takes off running and then so close to the end zone,
just lowers the pads, gets the extra yards, gets into
the end zone. What can that type of play do
for an offensive line when you see your quarterback just
going out there and laying it on the line to
get those extra yards and get those six points.
Speaker 24 (37:48):
Yeah, I mean, that's what you want from a guy,
you know, when he knows that, hey, if I can
lower the shoulder, get another yard, get the guys off
the field. The offensive line rallies behind him, you know,
or usually the guys that have to do the dirty
work and they get to go on the end zone
and take their pictures and everything. So to see him
lower the shoulder, you know he's got the team behind him.
He knows that taking those hits shows that he's invested,
(38:10):
and I think the fans enjoy it just as much
as the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
In terms of this offensive line, what have you seen
out of them? Because everybody's talking about particularly the last
three or four weeks, but I feel like the offensive
line has played well all season outside of spots here
and there.
Speaker 24 (38:24):
Yeah, I think there's just been one blemish on the
record the Tennessee game that the edge defenders kind of
got the better of us she Yachts and Wolfschaleger on
the edges, But other than that, they have been solid.
I think that interior three is probably some of the
best in the SEC. Going from Braun to Jagger over
to Jalen Farmer. I've said it before, Jalen Farmer is
high on my list. I think that he's going to
(38:45):
be an NFL guy. I think that he's going to
have a long career if he wants it. Same with
Jagger and Josh. I think that their roads may be
a little different. They may have to work a tab
bit harder, but I think the doors are open for them.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
Chatting with Logan Stenberg. He's an analyst for us on
the UK Sports Network. You can hear him alongside Christy
and Ricky on Saturday afternoons as the Wildcats to get
ready to take on Vanderbilt this weekend down in Nashville.
And in terms of the defense, we've seen a lot
of young guys playing on that side of the ball,
really young guys everywhere right now for this Kentucky team.
(39:19):
But coach of Brad White has shown a trust in
a lot of these young guys on the defensive side,
and they've backed him up this year.
Speaker 24 (39:25):
Yeah, it was good that Tennessee Tech kind of came
and fell with those two injuries with Green and alex
Afari obviously a little banged up. Expect to see him
back this week versus Vanderbilt. But I mean you talk
about Brad White, I mean you give him any personnel,
anybody on that side of the ball. He's going to
be able to draw something up to put these guys
in good positions. I think that's what he does best.
You know, he's not out scheming guys, but he knows
(39:47):
the players that he has. He knows what they're good
at and bad at, and he puts them in positions
to excel. And that's that's what a good coordinator does.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
They're so physical on that side of the ball too.
You know they've made teams outside of maybe the Tennessee game,
they have really made teams grinded. They've only allowed twenty
points in the last four games. Yeah, he preed four
or five, I should say.
Speaker 24 (40:05):
Yeah, he preaches physicality, aggressiveness, just swarming to the ball.
Speaker 11 (40:09):
Watch it next game.
Speaker 24 (40:10):
You know when that van when Diego Pavia has that
little breakout run, there's gonna be five or six guys
around that ball. That's when good things happen. You know,
that ball pops out, we have people to pick it up.
We have people to get the finished tackle on those
shoelace tackles. So you know they're swarming well, they're playing hard,
they're playing well for Brad and.
Speaker 3 (40:29):
For Mark something you mentioned a minute ago. I wanted
to go back to having that FCS opponent where it
fell on the schedule. I know Coachtops was asked about
it after the game. And it was such a weird
schedule this year because all the bye weeks were at
the front end of the season and now you're into
the teeth of this SEC schedule. Guys are beat up
this time of year, banged up. So it was kind
(40:50):
of good to step out of the league this weekend
for this team, and you know, all due respect to
Tennessee Tech, but it was good to step away from
the Texas and Tennessee's in Florida's this weekend.
Speaker 11 (41:00):
Man, we needed it, we really did.
Speaker 3 (41:01):
You know.
Speaker 24 (41:02):
Now we go into these very two winnable games, games
that we can go and go to a bowl game,
which we thought was not possible a week four going
into this season. So we kind of have a new
lease on life with this. You know, you look at
the Vanderbilt game. I think that the offense poses some
problems for us, but defensive wise and our offense going
against their defense, I think we match up very well.
(41:23):
I'm excited to see what Cutter does.
Speaker 3 (41:25):
Chatting with Logan Stenberg again. You can hear him alongside
Christy and Ricky on the Jack Burford Chevrolet Countdown to
kick off. We're going to take a quick time out.
We got one segment left in the show and we'll

Vital Segment of the Week here on bb AND Radio,
presented by Clark's pumpin Shopper, with Logan Stenberg chatting about
this Kentucky football team. They've won three straight at Vanderbilt
this weekend. It's a three point thirty Eastern kickoff in Nashville,
and our pregame coverage will begin at one thirty here
on the UK Sports Network. Let's talk a little bit
(46:37):
about the matchup this weekend. I know you and Christy
and Ricky are going to break it down big time
on Saturday, but I think some of just the big highlights.
Vanderbilt does such a great job when they get in
the red zone. I think they score touchdown almost eighty
percent of the time. It's going to be key for
Kentucky when they're in those moments to try to limit
them and get them off the field. Yeah.
Speaker 24 (46:57):
I think the key guys obviously diego you know, as
a defense looking at that offense. It's hard to have
somebody spying Diego every play because now you're out numbered.
So we really need to pick and choose when we
have that spy and when we're not. When we're playing
zone and we're man covers, we're doubling people. That's going
to be the big ticket. We can't let Diego get loose,
and they've got a lot of weapons. That's the problem.
Speaker 11 (47:18):
They're tired.
Speaker 24 (47:18):
End is going to be probably a first round draft pick.
He's an incredible player. Him and Diego have a great connection.
So I think that their offense is going to definitely
put up points, but I think our defense will play well.
I'm excited to see Cutter kind of really get out
of Lexington, go to Vandy, be the guy, be the
one that everybody rallies behind, and see what he does
with that.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
Going back to Diego, Pavia real quick. Because of his
scrambling ability, it's a unique challenge for a defense to
prepare for. They do a lot of misdirection stuff, but
and I mean this is a compliment, but it's almost
like backyard football. When he starts to scramble.
Speaker 24 (47:52):
It is and it makes me think about Lynn, you know,
I've blocked for Lynn, so that offensive line has a
very hard job. It's uh, they never know where the
ball is. It's a good thing, sometimes it's a bad thing,
so it just puts them in a weird position. But
I think the hardest job for us is gonna be
our defense because facing somebody like that, you're focused on
containment all day long. You can't really rush the passer
(48:13):
because if you get him outside that pocket, he's dangerous.
So you want to keep him in that pocket. Force
them to throw the ball away, force them to make
decisions that are favorable for us. Hopefully we can get
a takeaway. But that's really it's going to be just
fundamental football on our side.
Speaker 3 (48:28):
Yeah, and then Vanderbilt's defense. Obviously they're going to be physical,
they have been all year, but there's going to be
opportunities for this Kentucky Wildcats team to move the football
and get points on the board. Yeah.
Speaker 24 (48:38):
I think we run the ball very well versus their
defensive line. I don't want to eat those words, but
I think that our offensive line matches up very well
with their front seven. They've got great linebackers that shoot
the hole. They fit the ball very well, very quick,
they're disciplined. Clark Lee obviously has them playing very inspired
football right now, But just on paper, I think that
our offensive line will get the better.
Speaker 3 (49:00):
I've talked about the ol and how they've played well
all season, and I think about the defenses they've gone
up against. Tennessee's disruptive in their front line. Texas obviously
is one of the best interior defenses in the nation.
Auburn may have one of the most underrated defenses in
the SEC in terms of their physicality. What have you
liked most about the way this offensive line is blocked
(49:21):
for bowlie and for the run.
Speaker 11 (49:22):
Game, It's been a communication.
Speaker 24 (49:24):
I mean, we have all of the ability as far
as size and talent and strength, but the communication has
been off the charts this year.
Speaker 11 (49:31):
That's something we've lacked in years prior.
Speaker 24 (49:34):
I think having some of those super seniors on our
offensive line, the Josh Brons and all that has helped
Jagger out going to center. I think last year he
was struggling with the mic points, struggling with breaking down
that defense quick enough and then still performing his blocks.
So I think having guys around him where he's not
having to push out the calls as much. Has helped
him play fast and we've seen a great product on
(49:56):
the field because of it.
Speaker 3 (49:58):
You feel like the last couple of games against Florida
and Tennessee Tech, we're really starting with bully under center
behind center to see the offense that coach Stoops wants
to run. It's very physical, it's going to put points
on the board. But also there's times where it shows
some flash and you know it's not just ground and pound.
Speaker 24 (50:18):
Yeah, And I think that's Bush kind of coming out.
I really will say. I think that Bush has finally
kind of got to put his thumb print on this
offense where hey man, we need to throw the ball
a little bit, we need to push the ball downfield.
Obviously we were successful on the ground. That's what opens
everything up in the past game. You know, I go
back to last week. We ran zone read I think
seven or eight times in the first twenty plays, and
(50:39):
it's set up that cutter to JJ Hester that that touchdown.
So it all stems from the run game. It stems
from the offensive line and the tight ends as well.
The tight ends have done an incredible job blocking, not
just receiving this year. So it's a group effort and
you can see that they're playing well.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
Kendrick law Is somebody that's name is starting to We
talked about more and more with each of the passing weeks,
and I think we're now seeing him show his potential
at the University of Kentucky, because man, he was a
big target on Saturday.
Speaker 24 (51:10):
He was and what He's just so versatile. You can
do whatever you want to with him. You know, you
can bring him in the sweep and hand the ball
off to him. He can send him on a go
route and he'll just jump over somebody. So he's definitely
that weapon that we like to have in the back
pocket right now, and I'm glad to see that we're
finally using him a little better. You know, go back
to what you said. Mark wants to ground the ball.
(51:32):
He wants to ground and pound, he wants to slow
the tempo down. He wants to control how many possessions
the other team has. And that's good, that's fun and dandy.
That that's great. You can win games that way, But
then you go to the Tennessee game when you have
to just outscore somebody. Then you have to rely on
those explosive plays. You have to rely on that pass game.
So there's a give and take in what he likes
to do, and I think we're finding a good medium
(51:54):
spot right now.
Speaker 3 (51:55):
Glad you mentioned that about Kendrick his ability to hurdle
because hurtling two guys, I'm not sure there's many of
us who could do that.
Speaker 24 (52:03):
No, definitely not us too, brother, No, no, no, that
was impressive.
Speaker 3 (52:08):
I was just sitting here thinking about everybody talks about
pobvious scrambling ability with Vanderbilt and how that creates plays
for Fandy, But we've kind of seen that out of Bowlie.
I feel like he's really good on the run in
terms of his accuracy.
Speaker 24 (52:22):
His decision making too, has just been off the chart
here recently the last three games. He's getting rid of
the ball when there's nothing open downfield. He's not taking
those unnecessary sacks. He's tucking and running when he sees
an opening. That's the quarterback that we want. We just
want good decisions out of them. We don't need them
to be superman. Just take what the defense gives us
and we're going to be fine.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
And they're also I feel like his pocket presence is
growing in terms of his well his awareness is growing.
But also Bush has started using some plays where we're
Cutter really doesn't have to stand there and pack the football.
He can get rid of it quickly.
Speaker 11 (52:55):
I think that's all confidence.
Speaker 24 (52:57):
You know, you start the game off quick, you get
a couple easy completion, you get into the rhythm of
the game. I think Cutters that guy that needs to
get hit two. So I think he's the one that
he really wants to kind of tuck run, get hit,
wake him up a little bit. Okay, now we're in
the game. Now we can play. Now we can run
our offense. And it all stems from the confidence. And
I think that he's slowly building that, especially with that
(53:17):
offensive line. They've proved to him like, hey man, you
can sit back there four or five seconds, you can
you can go and survey the field.
Speaker 3 (53:22):
We got you.
Speaker 24 (53:23):
And so he's got confidence and his receivers to get open,
his offensive line to block form.
Speaker 11 (53:28):
He feels very comfortable.
Speaker 3 (53:29):
And we talked about the youth on the defensive side
of the ball, but Cutter's got some young targets out there.
I don't want to end this conversation without mentioning Miller
and the job those guys are doing. Those young receivers,
they've stepped up big time in the second half of
the season.
Speaker 24 (53:42):
I don't want to look to next year, but it
looks very promising. You know, we got to keep cutter
obviously this offseason, keep them happy, keep them on staff
and playing here. But as far as the young guys
stepping up and what they've been able to do just
with their limited snaps has been very promising.
Speaker 12 (53:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (53:59):
Absolute. We're chatting with Logan Stenberg. You can hear more
of him on the Jack Burford Chevrolet Countdown to kick
off this Saturday as they take on Vanderbilt down in
Nashville again three point thirty kick one thirty airtime on
the UK Sports Network. Let's talk about going on the
road to Vanderbilt in years past. I don't think it
(54:19):
was a huge deal in terms of the environment, and
a lot of times you knew it was for teams
like Kentucky, it was almost going to be fifty to
fifty or maybe even slightly a home crowd for the Wildcats.
But it's completely different now that Vanderbilt program bought in.
It's going to be a completely different atmosphere that Kentucky's
walking into down there.
Speaker 24 (54:39):
Yeah, you nailed it around the head. It is not
the Vandy I played. When we went down to Vandy,
we knew that we would have the majority of the
fans in the stadium. We knew that their fans would
be out by halftime, the twos would be in, we'd
be going rolling getting a dub. Now it's a completely
different game. It's an SEC opponent that we have got
to take seriously. We have got to game plan. Then
we have got to go into that game knowing that
(54:59):
we're going to to take a couple of licks here,
but we've got to be able to bounce back and
keep swinging, and when we do that, we're going.
Speaker 11 (55:04):
To be successful.
Speaker 24 (55:05):
But you talk about the fan engagement, I think UK
will get into the stadium.
Speaker 11 (55:10):
They love going to.
Speaker 24 (55:11):
Nashville, so I expect to see a lot of blue there.
Speaker 11 (55:14):
And a lot of Commodorees as well.
Speaker 3 (55:16):
But we can't wait to hear you and Christy and
Ricky break it down on the Jack Burford Chevrolet counting
down to kick offf Logan, we appreciate you hopping on
our show with us this week. Dhead.
Speaker 11 (55:26):
Thanks for having me brother.
Speaker 3 (55:27):
Yeah, absolutely, he's Logan Stenberg. I'm Darren Heddrick, thanks for
