Welcome back into the Bluegrass here in clinic Kenny Brooks show,
Darren Hedrick sitting in alongside the coach and South Carolina
game now behind you. I'm sure you had a chance
to look over that one a little bit. So what
did you learn about the way your team performed in
that matchup with the game Cocks.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
You know, you and I talked about it. We're not
into moral victories right now, but I was very proud
of the kids. With nothing that could have been We
couldn't better our seeding, we couldn't worsen it, and really
with nothing to play for other than pride, and these
kids came out and we thought about it about wrestling
a couple of the kids, you know, just because they
were banged up. They were limping leading into practice and

(05:07):
we wanted to make sure they were going to be
fresh for the games that really really mattered. But they're
so resilient, you know, they wanted to come out and
they wanted to play, they wanted to compete, and you
go into an atmosphere like that, you know, a lot
of them, you know, Georgia's dreamed of opportunities like that,
and Claire was, you know, up for the challenge, and
so many of our kids just really good job. So
I was really proud of them. We just didn't execute
down the stretch like we wanted to, but we did

(05:29):
a lot of good things that we can carry into
the SEC tournament.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Coach, you and I talked after the game yesterday about
how well your defense had performed against some of the
top offenses. I didn't realize just how well it was
until Cammy did a great job sending us some numbers
against top twenty five teams. You held top twenty five
programs to thirty eight percent shooting in games on average,
twenty four percent from beyond the art. Just a phenomenal

(05:53):
job against some of the best teams in the country.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Very proud of it. I think our defense is underrated.
You know, offense gets a lot of attention, but our
defense and it says really good. It's not the conventional
what people would call great defenses because of the way
we play. We don't get out and we don't take
a lot of things away from you. We just make
everything hard for you. And when you get into those opportunities,
what kind of hurt you into the situation that we
want you to get into. And then once you get there,

(06:15):
we can test your shot and usually we'll be able
to rebound the basketball. And I thought we did a
good job yesterday for the most part. You give South
Carolina credit. They made some tough shots. They really did
some of the shots that we thought were we contested well,
we put them in bad situations they ended up making
the shot, and that was the difference. We went. We
went stretches. We were playing well enough on the offensive end,

(06:36):
but you know, when they had it to ten, you know,
we get it to eight, they get it back to ten,
and then it just really took a long time for
us to cut the lead down, but we did it.
We got to the situation we wanted. You know, with
under five minutes to go, you're down by one at
South Carolina and that environment, you know you're going to
take your chances. And I was very, very proud of
the kids just because of their resolve and they came

(06:56):
out and they didn't hang their heads and they just
fought through a lot of diversity, no doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
And we'll talk about some more of the team defense
with Team Blocks, who set a program record for block
shots this year and that number is still climbing. You
got some more games to play, we do.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
And then you know, that plays our strength. You know,
we're long, and sometimes when we constructed the team, I
knew we were tall, and I didn't know how tall
we were until you know, we started playing SEC games
against you know, the non conference foes. You know, a
lot of times you're going to be bigger, but a
lot of the time when we walked out to play
to match up against an SEC team, a very prominent
SEC team, and we were just so much bigger. And

(07:32):
so that played into our strength to make sure we
would try to funnel people into our shot blockers. Between
Amelia Hasset, who was playing most in the perimeter of
Tiani Key, then obviously Clara Strack. You know, they've done
a tremendous job of just really protecting the rim and
and that's one of our strengths and we played to it.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
I think it hit home for me just how tall
your team is. When you played LSU and both teams
were out there warming up on the court, we know
how big LSU is and how well they rebound, and
seeing your team warm up, I was it hit home.
Just the link that you're talking about available to.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Your z Yeah, and the beauty with it is that
they're very long, but they're also mobile. Yeah, they can move.
Claria Strike can move with the best of them. She
can guard a center, she can guard she can guard
a guard. Tiani's the same way, Amelia is the same way.
So it's probably affectionately called them the triplets because there's
so much alike and they can switch and they do
a lot of variety of things. It really helps us

(08:25):
and it's really enabled us to have one of the
better defenses in the country. And you know, we're not
as swift a foot as some of the other teams are,
but you know, we're smart and they work well together
and the chemistry is just tremendous and that's why we've
been able to be so successful well.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
And it also helps when you have the wingspan the
block shots, even when they do get around you, you
can block this shot from behind.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Makes up for a lot of makes up for a
lot of deficiencies, and that's what that's what we count on.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Yeah, coach, we got a couple of questions on social
media that are very similar, so I'll just combine them
into one for you, and it basically is, how do
you feel overall about the season twenty games that you
have a favorite moments?

Speaker 3 (09:03):
You know? You know, it's almost been like a blur.
Georgia comes to the office every day and we've been
it's almost been like an unofficial countdown. And we'll say
it without saying it that we knew that time was
coming to an end just because, uh, you know, games
are going by and we were we were cherishing every moment.
But it's just been an overall fantastic year. You know,
from the start. They had adversity from the beginning. You know,

(09:27):
I'll say it, you know, I don't think it gets
talked about enough. We had we had proposed a different
type basketball team, and when you have a Jordan Obie
and a and a Don Perova who is both or
six foot one versatile, they were going to enable us
to do a lot. It was going to deepen ut,
it was going to deepen our bench. And when they
went out. You know, that was adversity right away, and
you know, could have been devastating, but everyone stepped up

(09:48):
and challenge. Ione blinked an eye and said, okay, well
then we're going to have to expect more from other people.
And uh. And the way that they've come together, and
I've said it before, this is one of my favorite,
if not my favorite team, just because one through thirteen
they collectively they just get along. You know, there's no drama,
they have fun. They're smart kids. You know, their GPAs
are very high and and you know, we just knock

(10:11):
on wood. We haven't had any issues. And they go
out and every game's joy and they play. They have fun,
they celebrate each other's successes, and that's what you want
with a group, and that's what you want in the group.
And it gets tougher and tougher this day and age,
just because of instant gratification and just you know, the
way society is now. But it's been a joy all
year long. And the winds have been the cherry on top.

(10:32):
It really has, because you want to go out and
you want a cherish the journey. And I've watched each
and every one of these young women grow right in
front of my eyes. And you know, the two that
knew the best they had to go and they had
to play different roles, they had had different you know,
opportunities presented to them, and they've come through with flying colors.
The other eleven I didn't know them and I didn't

(10:52):
really know what to expect, and they, you know, beyond
my expectations and they've just been wonderful kids and wonderful
basketball players. And you know, I think that they brought
an excitement to women's basketball here at UK.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Let's get to a break. It's the bluegrass here in

The biggest problem I noticed before I got my hearing
tested was that I missed what people were saying. Sometimes
I would just ignore it a smile, shake my head.
When I went to Bluegrass Hearing Clinic, they treated me

imagine them tingling on your top, busy deliciousness. Listen to

sugar the best coke effort? Try and decide what does
being part of this community mean? To coach Kenny Brooks.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
For me, being a part of a community means a
shared philosophy of positive growth, lifting up those around you,
trying to change whatever you can for the better. Central
Bank's been doing that since the day they were found in.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Welcome back in to the Bluegrass here in clinic Kenny
Brooks Show. This is our final show of the season
as tournament play begins, but probably not the last time
we get to chat with coach because we've got some
other things coming up in terms of the SEC and
NCAA tournament. But our final show of the season, let's
go to our Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. We'll start
with Joe. Joe, you're on with Coach Brooks.

Speaker 13 (14:41):
Thank you coach. Coach is Florida game. You warned everybody
that Carolina was capable of hitting those, you know, really hard,
big time shots, and Coach, they did take a couple
that I kind of blinked that I had, but they
made them. So what are you going to do? Kenny? Y'all,
y'all come really close to pulling the fset in the
in the The girl I want to talk about is Hassett.

(15:02):
I know you're asking a whole lot of her to
go eight key twenty five feet down on the floor
and guard these great individual players in the SEC, and
I think somehow she's hoping up really good and she
seems like she's got pretty good stamina that it was
not really hurting her on the offense from n Sometimes
sometimes if you can't get a stop, it might affect

(15:22):
your offense. But I'm really impressed what you've done with
the young lady coming from junior college. Can you talk
a little bit about Amelia? Thank you?

Speaker 3 (15:30):
Yeah, we love I love Amelia, and obviously we've asked
her to do some things and that's kind of what
I alluded to when we had some of the injuries earlier.
You know, we had brought her in thinking she was
going to be strictly a power forward, and with the
injuries that we had, we had to move some people around,
and she was one of the ones who who's pretty
much playing out of position the whole year. And the

(15:52):
way that she's not only adapted to Division one basketball,
but also the SEC basketball and also doing it all
the while playing a different position. Extremely extremely proud of
her and what she's been able to do. And sometimes
you know, she doesn't score as much, but she does
a lot of the other things. You know, she'll grab
her rebound that maybe the common fan doesn't understand, or

(16:13):
she'll do something get a block that kind of quietly
goes unnoticed. But I'm very proud of her. She's a
wonderful young lady, a lot of fun to be around,
and she's enjoyed her experiences here at UK.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Jill, thank you for the call. And I think that's
one of my favorite things about Amelia is she finds
a way to produce for this team. It's either points
or she'll go get rebounds for you too. She averaged
over eighth this year.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
Yeah, she and I would I'd like for her to
hunt her shot a little bit more, get in position
and then step up and knock them down and just
take the opportunity. But she she's just a wonderful kid.
She just wants to do whatever she can for the
betterment of the team. You know, her family's in town
right now that they're having a ball, and you know
she's got the whole crew. Mom, dad, aunt's, uncles, cousins, grandparents.
You know they're all here and probably the economy of

(16:56):
Lexington has gone up because they keep buying up a
lot of things. But you know that they're loving her
experience here and I'm just so happy for her.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Coach, you got a couple of players that are are
up for some postseason awards. Georgia Amore was announced today
as a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman National point Guard
of the Year finalists. Can you just look at her
numbers and you can see why watching her plays even
more fun.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
She's got my vote.

Speaker 14 (17:21):
Too.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
You know, I've been saying it for a long time,
and I remember her sophomore year and I asked her.
I used to ask her the question and say, who's
the best player on the floor? And she used to
answer my question with the question and she would say me.
And then probably about the end of that year, you know,
she started answering that question with us as a statement
and she would say me, I am. And ever since then,
she's really believed that she's the best player on the floor.

(17:42):
And when she has that confidence, you know, she's unbelievable.
But the best thing about her on the floor, it's
not the scoring. It's not the you know, flashy plays
or the passes or whatever. It's her leadership. And you know,
I had a scout come up to me and it's
something that I've known and we've kind of talked about
that throughout her career, is that if you ever watch
her play, you only see pure joy. You don't ever

(18:05):
see her mad, you don't ever see her sad. You
don't ever see if she turns them all over that
she's upset. She's always communicating with her teammates in a
positive manner, and that's that's the that's the qualities of
a great leader and the way that she does that,
and you know, she makes it. You know, she makes
us good. And you know, darn Staley even said it.
You know, she makes everyone around her better, you know,

(18:26):
including the coaching staff, including the marketing department, including our
sid including the trainers, including everybody. And that's just the
kind of personality she has. So for me, that's the
that's the ultimate compliment as a point guard, and that's
why I think that she's the best in the country.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Some of the stats that Cammy has compiled to help
just kind of, I guess put into words or put
into scope, just how much she's meant to this team.
This year an SEC plays, she accounted for over fifty
percent of production between her points and assists, and nationally
she's ninth in the country in points production at nearly
twenty points per game, which among the five finalists for

(19:03):
the Nancy Lieberman Award, ranks the highest. But I think
that kind of puts into perspective just how much she's
meant to this group.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
She's meant so much to her teammates period, all throughout
her career. And I've said it before. Without Georgia A. Moore, Uh,
there is no a SEC Championship for Virginia Tech. There
is no Final four run for Virginia Tech. And she
was She's probably the best player, one of the best
players ever play there. And she comes here, she takes
a leap of faith and uh and what does she do.

(19:29):
She just goes down, she dominates another league. Yeah, and
uh and it just goes to show you and like
her experiences here, Uh, you know, she absolutely loves it.
She's really sad that they're coming to an end. And uh,
she's loved every bit of it. She's uh, she's made
her mark here. Uh and she's really given our program
credibility and uh and so you know, we we're forever
grateful for, you know, everything she's done. And I think

(19:52):
she's got a tremendous future for what she's gonna do.
So every every award is she gets. Uh, she's very
deserving of it and uh not only because of her play,
but she's a consummate student athlete.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Let's stick our final time out here on the bluegrass
here in clinic hearing Clinic Kenny Brooks Show. This is
the UK Sports Network ever.

you are on with coach Brooks's rook you.

Speaker 17 (22:31):
Thank you, welcome. We're gonna win this half West Timers.
We're gonna win the and so we time a final

the positivity. Let's go.

Speaker 17 (22:52):
There's still yes, indeed, and we're gonna I'm ready to
win the whole thing. And and also are you gonna
do a lot more running? And they sell you a
lot more running?

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Gun NXT year running and gunning, coach, you do a
lot of that this year?

Speaker 3 (23:06):
Yeah, we did. We did a lot, and we got
up and down the floor. And the obviously when you
get into conference play and the familiarity really sets in,
and you know, teams really try to take away your
strength and you have to really be able to play
different ways. And so yeah, you know, we we get
up and down with the best of them right now
as we speak. And you know, a lot of times
people will say, well, what are your philosophies in coaching?
And I have to ask them which year are you

(23:27):
talking about? And so every year is different, Every year
is different. My team this year is different than my
teams were previous, and a lot of it has to
do with personnel. And so obviously this spring is going
to be very important to us through the transfer portal
and see what we can get. Obviously we'll go after
a certain type of player, but also the ones that
we land will dictate how we're gonna play next year.

(23:48):
And obviously we have some great pieces coming back which
we know we can build around, but we have to
see what the accessory pieces are going to be and
then we'll figure out how we're gonna play. But nonetheless
it's going to be it's gonna be very entertaining.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
We appreciate the call, Coach. We got a couple of
minutes left in the show, and I wanted to talk
about Clara Strack. What a phenomenal season. She had fourteen
double doubles. She scored twenty plus points eight times, including
back to back to end the season against tough opponents
Tennessee and South Carolina. But more than that, She averaged
over two assists per game in SEC play, and forty

(24:20):
one of her seventy blocks were against conference teams. She
grew up in a tough league to grow up in BBN.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
Enjoy it, man, I really enjoy it because she's very special,
and I think she's going to be a tremendous player
throughout her career. The things that she does right now.
You know, we're teaching her a lot, but she does
a lot of it on her own. She's a special player.
And you know, I will be I'll let you know,
I'll be very honest here. I will be very disappointed
if she is not on the All SEC team. She
deserves it. You know, she's top twenty in scoring, she's

(24:51):
top five and rebounding, she's first in blocks, and she's
anchored our defense. You know, she's you know, fueled us
with some offense and she's a spectacular player all over
the floor.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Came in.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
We watched film today and uh, you know a lot
of times you're doing a lot of correction, and it
was just like a solid movie. We were just like
just watching it because it was she didn't really do
anything wrong, you know, so, uh, but she's special. She's
special and we're very fortunate to have her, and we're
we're going to enjoy this, you know, just like we've
enjoyed Georgia for the last five years. You know, I'm
enjoying her as a player because because she just pitomizes

(25:24):
everything that you want from a student athlete.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
We got less than a minute left in the show,
but real quickly just the importance of getting that double
buy in a couple of days' rest.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
Oh my gosh, it was.

Speaker 11 (25:33):
It was.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
We needed it, we really did. And it just because
if you're going to try to muster your way through
an SEC tournament to win a championship, three games is
a lot better than playing four. And with the style
of the teams, are you going to play as it is,
We're probably going to play Oklahoma, then you're probably gonna
play South Carolina, then you're probably going to play Texas,
And those are three games back to back to back

(25:55):
that you know, I don't I don't put on my
worst enemy, but you know, you need the rest heading
into it, and you know, and ultimately we're just trying
to make sure we're ready for the NCAA tournament.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Coach. Thanks, as always, We'll see you in Greenville. Thank
you Air Clark's Pumping Shop. BBN Radio comes your way. Next,
we'll be joined by Andrew Kappus to talk basketball, baseball
and more. This is the UK Sports Network.
